While we debated whether to publish this spring issue of Live More, we decided to move forward in the hope that the stories we share may help to bring some joy into our disrupted lives.

Sent to serve

Distilling the terms mission and ministry from the ancient Greek and Hebrew languages, they can be universally translated into “sent” (mission) and “to serve” (ministry).

As I sit in the opening session of the United Church of Christ’s Council for Health and Human Service Ministries Annual Gathering, the day after our visit to and discussion about the National Civil Rights Museum, I cannot help but be moved by the sense of ministry our members bring to their organizations.

From providing housing to low income people of all ages, running inner city programs for kids, to providing engaged living environments for people 55 and better, our member agencies truly live out their missions and manifest their ministry.

At Cedar Community we regularly ask the question: “How are we manifesting our mission and the ministry to which we are called?” At our recent strategic planning retreat, we devoted Lynn W. Olson the afternoon to a discussion of this question, and how our CEO, “Coach of an Excellent Organization” expression of mission and ministry might evolve to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population and workforce. We didn’t resolve the question in that single setting, but we will continue strategizing and prioritizing how we will bring that part of our organization into sharper focus.

Programming: We currently offer robust chaplaincy support at all of our locations. Programs and services include worship services, both denominational and ecumenical, educational and supportive programming, and individual spiritual care. We continue to explore how we can enhance programming and support both inside our organization and in the community.

Partnerships: One of the goals we set as an organization two years ago was to partner to a greater degree with local churches to share our story and invite them to be part of our ministry. Our organization was born out of local and regional church efforts, with significant volunteer input as we grew in those early years. Those partnerships are being renewed and strengthened, with new connections being formed as well.

Places: We are currently discussing our capital budget for the coming year. Part of that discussion has been evaluating how we can represent our spiritual heritage and invite spiritual engagement in a physical, visual way. We know that spiritual engagement enhances overall wellness, so our long-term plan is to have spiritually inviting spaces at all of our locations.

We recently finished a spiritual center at our Cedar Bay West assisted living facility on the Big Cedar Lake Campus. While modest in size, the room provides a quiet place for reflection and renewal, and is being used by residents on a regular basis. We also have a multi-purpose room that doubles as a chapel for services.

A similar space, albeit on a larger scale, is being planned for our Cedar Bay East assisted living facility, also located on the Big Cedar Lake Campus. The new space, combined with a remodeled entry, will create a warm and spiritually inviting place for residents and families to gather, reflect, and have fellowship.

We’ve also been blessed by the efforts of our own residents who, through the expertise of the artisans at our woodshop, have created symbols and structures to support worship services at our campuses.

Partnerships, and Places We cherish that we continue a tradition of being “sent” (mission) and “to serve” (ministry) not just the physical needs, but also the spiritual needs of adults 55 and better. In the coming months we will continue our exploration of how to deepen that commitment to our residents and the greater community.

I thought I had a solid appreciation for the life force that resided in the crusty earth-bound bulbs, the stalwart trunks, and the strong anchoring roots, waiting through winter to emerge anew in the spring.

And then I moved to Wisconsin.

All through winter, as the inches of snow accumulate, the cloud coverage thickens, and the temperatures plummet, I positively yearn for a sign that life has not given up. I need to see some evidence that life continues its quest for newness, for growth, for another chance to paint creation with color, fill the air with fragrance, and bear abundant fruit.

I am not above opening up my calendar and counting the weeks until spring. I did this one snowy February day as I sat in front of the fire. I made note of the approaching holidays and observances that help mark time during the long and lingering winter.

Renewal a season of

Three such occasions are, or have become, overtly secular: Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and April Fool’s Day. While there are legitimate critiques that can be made about the extent to which these holidays have been commercialized, there is still something suggestive about them. Whether we seek to share love, luck, or laughs, life calls us out of ourselves and into relationships and experiences with others.

There are three sacred observances bridging winter and spring this year: Lent and Easter (February 26-April 12); Passover (April 8-16); and Ramadan (April 23-May 23). Two of these call for introspection and reflection, and other spiritual practices to acknowledge our brokenness and renew our commitments. One commemorates the emancipation of a people bound in slavery. Whether we are Christian or Jewish, the spiritual life leads us into ourselves to discover fresh understandings and perspectives, and to trust there is more for us to become.

Even as the life force exists in the natural world, it also flows through each of us. Where is it leading us?

Will we trust our capacity to grow? Will we be open to varieties of expression and experiences that are not our own? How will we nurture the life in ourselves and in those around us? Will we bear the fruit of kindness or cruelty, of welcome or exclusion, of community or isolation, of hope or despair?

The crusty earth-bound bulbs will soon put forth shoots. The sap has risen in the stalwart trunks and branches soon will blossom. The roots push deeper to support the new growth which longs to be revealed.

May we follow their example…and live anew.

RESIDENT PROFILE James (Jack) Koehn

James, or Jack Koehn as he prefers to be called, was born and raised in West Bend. Jack was the oldest of four boys, and he attended West Bend High School, graduating in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years during the Korean War, serving in the Atomic Energy Commission Unit. Their unit detonated the first hydrogen bomb on Eniwetok Island, part of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. He proudly displays a plaque with that recognition.

If the name Koehn sounds familiar, it goes back to his father, Walter Koehn, who owned Koehn Jewelers on Main Street in West Bend. After working with his father for a while, he decided to open his own jewelry store in Kewaskum, named Koehn and Koehn Jewelers. He eventually expanded to six more jewelry stores in Southeast Wisconsin, including Hartford, Menomonee Falls, Germantown, Brown Deer, Oshkosh, and Beaver Dam. At one time he employed a total of 45 clerks, tradesmen, designers, and managers.

The stores carried many designs of jewelry and popular brands of watches, including Rolex.

During this labor of love, another very important love came into his life. At Arnie’s bar, the local watering hole as he called it, he met the love of his life, Janet Kenny. Her father, Delbert J. Kenny, was president of the B.C. Ziegler Co. Jack and Janet married and raised six children.

He proudly boasts about his family, including his 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

His son, Andy along with his wife Jenn, now own Koehn & Koehn Jewelers in West Bend.

“My whole life was fun, and I really mean that!”

Despite the time required to establish a jewelry business and raising six children, Jack said getting away occasionally was important as well. Jack and Janet took time for traveling within the continental United States, they visited Hawaii several times, and traveled to Europe, including Germany and Ireland. Their favorite was Ireland, as Janet, being Irish, also had family there.

They enjoyed retirement together until Janet passed away two years ago after 62 years of marriage. Jack tried to manage staying in their home for awhile, until he and his family realized he needed additional assistance. He moved to Cedar Community’s assisted living in July of 2019. He knew a great deal about Cedar Community, as he was a good friend of Rev. Louis Riesch, Cedar Community’s first CEO, and had worked with him on many projects during Cedar Community’s early beginnings. The move wasn’t very far as their family home was on Kenny Drive, adjacent to Cedar Community.

Jack says he highly recommends Cedar Community. “They take excellent care of me and the food is great,” says Jack. When he has time, he enjoys the activities available at Cedar Community. In reflection, Jack says he loved what he was doing. He lived a busy and active life raising a family, and developing his jewelry business, which he says was a fun, beautiful business to be in because it made people happy and helped them with special life events. When asked if he recalled any exceptional or fun times in his life, he said, “My whole life was fun, and I really mean that!”

Questions to ask your pharmacist

Services that enhance the retirement living lifestyle

Cedar Community provides a vast array of amenities and services for residents, including an onsite pharmacy. Residents receive a one-on-one consultation with a pharmacist when they pick up their prescriptions, and an opportunity for a medication therapy review, which provides information on saving money by switching to a comparable medication. The convenience of onsite services, free delivery, and over-the-counter medications, allows residents to spend more time enjoying life.

Q: Why should I know the names of my medications, and what they are for?

Q: What is the best way to dispose of unused medication?

A: I f you see multiple health care providers or end up in the emergency room, you need to know the medications you are taking, what your condition is, and why you are taking the drug.

A: Check with your pharmacy. Several pharmacies offer a drug disposal container. Cedar Community has one located at the Cedar Lake Pharmacy on the Cedar Lake Campus.

Q: How, when, and for how long should you take the medication?

Q: When should I follow up with my health care provider or pharmacist?

A: A sk your doctor or pharmacist if your medication should be taken with or without food, the best time of day to take it, and how long you need to take it.

A: If you are on an antibiotic and not getting better within a few days, contact your health care provider.

Some medications may take several weeks or months to take effect. Ask your health care provider or pharmacist for a timeline on treatment to better understand how the medication works.

Q: Do I need to avoid any other medications, vitamins, food, or drinks while taking the medication?

A: S ome medications may cause interactions or side effects with food, antacids, fruit drinks, or vitamins.

Check with your pharmacist about any interactions.

Q: What side effects are possible with the medication?

Q: Why should I fill my prescriptions at one pharmacy?

A: It is important to fill your prescriptions at one pharmacy so your pharmacist can see your full list of medications. They can watch for potentially harmful drug interactions and recommend safer options.

A: Ask your pharmacist about the most frequently reported adverse reactions of a medication. Never stop taking a medication, unless your health care provider tells you to.

Q: What if I miss a dose?

A: I f you missed a dose, that doesn’t mean you should double up on your next dose. If you are not sure what to do, contact your pharmacist.

Q: What is the best way to store my medication?

A: M ost medications should be stored in a cool, dry place. Some may need to be refrigerated. Avoid the bathroom where humidity is prevalent from showers.

If you are taking any type of narcotics, be sure to store the medication in a safe place, out of sight.

Making a difference at Cedar Community

Bill and Margie Bailey

Bill and Margie Bailey did not have any personal connection to Cedar Community prior to 2018, when they began volunteering. “Our parents died young, we didn’t have any elderly relatives around here, so we never had any experience with Cedar Community. But, wow, you talk to anybody who has had a relative or friend who has lived there, and they are very complimentary,” says Margie.

Bill worked as a senior mortgage lender at First National Bank of West Bend for 24 and a half years before it was bought out by M&I Bank. He enjoyed the small town feel of a local bank, so he moved to National Exchange Bank the last 17 and half years of his career, retiring in 2012. Margie enjoyed 15 years at Moraine Park Technical College where she did entrance exams and aptitude and GED testing, until her department and position were eliminated.

She worked for a short time in retail before finding her second dream job at Healthy Families, which was run through Catholic Charities in West Bend.

She provided family support for new moms. After five years the program ended, and she retired. “I feel very fortunate to have had two jobs I really loved. I even keep in touch with several families from Healthy Families and continue to see their kids grow,” says Margie.

Both Bill and Margie have volunteered in the past for various local organizations.

Most recently, thanks to a close friend of many years who volunteers at Cedar Community’s memory care, and a neighbor who shared her love of volunteering at Cedar Community, the Bailey’s signed up to volunteer. They both enjoy the opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones as they spend three to four days each month helping with a variety of activities at Cedar Community. Bill likes volunteering for Bingo and Yahtzee. He also skippers the pontoon boat in summer. Margie likes working events, especially the annual Chili Social and Used Book Sale, along with monthly birthday parties, happy hours, and Art with Jen. “Your whole staff is totally amazing.

We just think the world of them,” says both Bill and Margie.

Bill enjoys being able to bring a smile to the residents’ faces. “The twinkling in their eyes just fuels my inner being of wanting to come back and do more, and more, and more. The residents are phenomenal,” says Bill. He feels he gets just as much back from the residents, and it makes a positive difference in his own life.

Margie likes the flexibility of being able to choose which events she volunteers for from a monthly listing, mailed to volunteers each month. “I have run into people I have known from years back who are now residents at Cedar Community. I love the interaction with residents, and it’s fun to be involved,” says Margie Bill and Margie also volunteer for the Salvation Army each year, from Thanksgiving to Christmas. They are responsible for collecting the red kettles from the Kewaskum Piggly Wiggly and taking them to the coordinator’s home to sort the donations. The Baileys both agree that volunteering allows them to help others, and that’s what it’s all about. “You have to make the most out of every moment,” says Bill.

Outside of volunteering, Bill meets friends twice a week for breakfast, swims four times a week, and enjoys reading and walking. Margie does yoga twice a week, plays Bridge, reads, and enjoys walks outside. They also help with their two grandchildren.

Throughout its more than 65 year history of serving the community, Cedar Community has placed a strong emphasis on ensuring that the individual needs of every resident are met. Over the course of 2019, a sampling of Cedar Community’s customers and their families have participated in monthly telephone interviews that include open-ended questions, as well the opportunity to rate Cedar Community in specific categories.

Every month, Cedar Community has gathered its realtime survey results to gain a better understanding of the residents’ needs and make improvements when necessary.

Residents receive local award Leon and JoAn Brasch

In January of this year, Cedar Community independent living residents Leon and JoAn Brasch were recognized by the Lomira Area Chamber of Commerce as Citizens of the Year for 2019. The award recognizes those who go above and beyond in the Lomira area. The Braschs owned the local Piggly Wiggly store for 68 years until their son took over in 1998.

JoAn grew up in the grocery business. When she was about two years old, her parents bought a local mom and pop grocery store in Weyauwega, and rented the property until it was later sold. Soon after, they found a small store in Lomira and ran that until Leon and JoAn took over the business in 1962. The Braschs were high school sweethearts who have been married for 68 years.

When Leon and JoAn started working in the store with her parents, it was very small, selling only dry goods. Leon thought it would be a good idea to add meat to the store and worked at Sentry for free, learning the meat business two days a week. “How many people would do that nowadays?”

says JoAn. In 1973, Leon and JoAn moved from that small grocery store they purchased from her parents, and built a Piggly Wiggly on Hwy 67 in Lomira. They ran that store until 1998, when their son took over. JoAn worked at the store until she was 85. Leon still works two days a week, two to three hours each day, in the meat department, free of charge.

“I help out with whatever they need. It’s something to do and it fills the day. That was my life and it’s hard to give up, especially the social interaction,” says Leon. He jokes, “It costs me $5 to go to work now to pay for my gas.” The store is no longer owned by the Brasch family, since their son sold the store and retired. It is now owned by one of the Brasch’s former supervisors from their warehouse.

During their years of ownership, they were actively involved in the community. Leon served with the Lions Club for 60 years, the American Legion for 67 years, and was a volunteer fireman for 25 years. He also served on the Board of Directors for Valley and TSB Banks, worked as a little league manager, and he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. JoAn was a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader, and she volunteered at the food pantry and blood bank. They also hosted three foreign exchange students, each for one year, and still keep in touch with them today. They are happy to have employed several members of the community over the years, and are very appreciative of the people who shopped at and supported their business. “We were surprised by the nomination and award and are very humbled. We thank God who has enabled us to do what we did all those years,” says both Leon and JoAn. Along with the award, the Braschs received $1,000, which they graciously donated to the Lomira Food Pantry and Wounded Warrior Project.

When the Brasch’s son retired and sold the store, he was worried about what his dad would do, since the store was his life. Today, the Braschs can be found at Cedar Community’s independent living apartments actively participating in daily activities and volunteer opportunities. “So many of our friends in Lomira have passed, are unable to get around, or have moved to be closer to their families. We moved to Cedar Community for the socialization, interaction, and all the wonderful people. It was hard leaving Lomira, but it was the best decision we ever made. We have met so many wonderful, friendly people in the two years we have lived here. We both can’t say enough good things about the move,” says Leon and JoAn.

The Braschs have enjoyed life, including two children, five grandchildren, and travels to six of the seven continents, including three trips to New Zealand, three to Thailand, and five to Germany to visit their former exchange students. “The move to Cedar Community is a whole new adventure for us. I am so grateful that we were able to make the move together and neither one of us had to make the transition by ourselves. I thank the good Lord so often for Cedar Community and that we are here together,” says JoAn. Leon agrees that they have lived a fantastic life and are still able to enjoy each other and what life has to offer.

Cedar Community provides valuable on-the-job training For many people, the best way to learn something is by doing. With careers that are hands-on, such as nursing, on-the-job training is crucial. Cedar Community works with local colleges, high schools, and organizations to provide valuable, real life training opportunities for students.

Working closely with Moraine Park Technical College (MPTC), Concordia University, the University of WisconsinMilwaukee, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and local high schools, Cedar Community provides clinical experience and preceptorships in not only nursing, but pharmacy.

Students at the college level participate in several clinical opportunities in a supervised setting with fellow students and an instructor. Cedar Community also offers a preceptor program which is a one-to-one relationship between

an experienced registered nurse and a nursing student.

MPTC requires 80 clinical hours and Concordia University requires 126 hours, along with supervision from a four-year degreed registered nurse. “The preceptor program allows students, who work with the same nurse throughout their required hours, to really learn the role of a nurse in a skilled care environment. It also helps them decide if they are on the right nursing career path and this type of nursing is something they want to continue after graduation,” says Heather Suarez Del Real, RN, Cedar Community’s Director of Nursing. Cedar Community typically hosts one to two senior level MPTC nursing students in their last semester of school, in long- and/or short-term care. While Concordia students have an opportunity to work with a four-year degreed registered nurse in Cedar Community’s long- and/ or short-term care, or hospice.

Nursing students from MPTC, Concordia University, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee complete their clinicals under the supervision of the classroom instructor both on long- and short-term units in the skilled facility, as well as in the independent living setting. Clinicals provide students an opportunity to fine tune their skills while working with an instructor who can answer questions and supervise.

While both the preceptor program and clinicals allow students to learn more about the long- and shortterm levels of care, the preceptor is an in-depth opportunity to hone in on valuable nursing skills.

“Working alongside a nurse, doing what she is doing, learning the true ins and outs of their day, really gives students first-hand experience of what it is like to be a nurse in this type of environment. They develop a relationship with the nurse while learning the pros and cons of long- and short-term care, and are immersed in the day-to-day of caring for multiple residents with a wide range of needs,” says Heather.

Working in a skilled nursing environment allows a nurse to fine tune their assessment and communication skills and autonomy because there is not always a practitioner onsite to rely on. “They have to learn how to make a good resident assessment

and communicate to the practitioner, sometimes over the phone, and figure out the next step of care. They are developing their skills and gaining confidence to do things on their own, versus working in a clinical group with several other students and an instructor to rely on,” says Heather.

Nikki Nass, a Registered Nurse at Cedar Community, has served as a preceptor for several years. “I love being able to share my love and passion for the geriatric population. The biggest misconception I’ve heard students say in the past is that it’s nothing but ‘pushing med carts and passing pills all day,’ which is the furthest from the truth. It’s really so much more–it’s a specialty. You have to have a level of understanding, patience, and a special personality to work with this population,” says Nikki. “You work with a large population all at once, many with an increased number of comorbidities, some acute and chronic, so there is a vast spectrum of care provided. The geriatric population brings everything you learn in nursing school full circle. It is fast paced and students learn the importance of prioritizing and delegation.

The scenarios faced everyday are about choices of what to do and when. I love to watch them grow as a new nurse. The wideeyed look on their faces on the first day when I tell them they will get to know

Cedar Community is also working with Concordia University offering a preceptorship in hospice.

“Cedar Community is unique because we have the time to walk through and explain the hospice nursing process and every aspect of hospice care. For some people this could be their first exposure to death. Working sideby-side with a hospice registered nurse can help a student process the whole life cycle more realistically,” says Jessica Melstrand, BSN, RN, Administrator of Cedar Community Home Health and Hospice. With many years of hospice experience, Jessica says it’s an honor to be a part of a patient’s endof-life and as a nurse it helps you realize your strengths and weaknesses, but at the same time being strong for the patient and family, while being confident in your skills and knowledge.

Cedar Community also coordinates with local high schools, serving as a clinical site for the schools’ nursing assistant training classes, and also with CESA 6, a youth apprenticeship program. The program allows employers to meet and interview students, enrolled in the program for open positions.

It teaches the student employment and social skills, and the opportunity to learn the skills needed to work in a long-term care environment. It also helps fulfill openings at Cedar Community with individuals interested in pursuing a nursing career,” says Cheri Manthei, HR Supervisor.

Students are reviewed by their Cedar Community supervisor on attendance, attitude, reliability, accuracy, initiative, flexibility, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and workplace standards. They receive high school credit and a grade for

the class. Cedar Community has been actively involved in the youth apprenticeship, and has hired over 10 students, many who still work here even after they head off to college, working during school breaks.

Students have responded positively to the program and appreciate the opportunity to learn and enhance their skills. “It was a great chance for me to see if nursing is something I really wanted to pursue,” says Maria, a Cedar Community Resident Assistant. “It’s a jump start to my nursing career while allowing me firsthand experience; something you can’t get in the classroom.

It also helps me develop my communication, leadership, and time management skills,” says Allison, a Cedar Community Resident Assistant. “I am able to

connect with residents on a personal level and build a relationship while assisting them with their needs,” says Adelina, Certified Nursing Assistant.

In addition to nursing, Cedar Community also offers educational opportunities for pharmacy students.

Cedar Community’s Director of Pharmacy, Mark Selle, RPh, has been a preceptor for almost 40 years, through the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy. The program has been offered by Cedar Community for nine years.

Each year, four to six University of WisconsinMadison pharmacy students spend one to two eight-hour days per week working alongside Mark and fellow pharmacist Sam Vang, PharmD, learning how to look at a medication profile for interactions and allergies

and monitoring medications. Also, most importantly, how to communicate with a senior population. “Cedar Community offers a unique learning site because we have everything from ambulatory to assisted living and longterm care, with a wide range of situations and ages. We also spend time with them teaching and interacting. They are not just observing our work. We give them situational questions and ask how they would approach it,” says Mark.

Several student follow-up surveys have highlighted the outstanding opportunities experienced by pharmacy students, including: “I had an amazing experience. Not only did I learn a lot from my preceptor, but the entire staff of pharmacists, techs, and nurses did everything they could

to teach me throughout the day. I couldn’t have asked for a better location;” “The site went above and beyond to accommodate students and prepare activities to enhance our learning. Opportunities to speak with patients and discuss medication assessments and recommendations with other students of different years was extremely engaging and beneficial;” and, “Best preceptor I’ve had so far. It wasn’t just students following and watching. Instead, the pharmacist devoted nearly all his time to teaching and guiding us to think critically, exposing us to direct patient interaction, and ensuring we got the very most out of our time. I am sad it was only a short rotation because this was the most valuable and influential preceptor I’ve had yet.”

Celebrating

outstanding team members Every quarter, Cedar Community recognizes team members who go above and beyond their everyday tasks for our residents, families, volunteers, and their fellow team members. Cedar Community is proud to announce our team members of the quarter award winnners: Molly Milski, Dining Services Supervisor, and Carla Peplinski, Purchasing Manager

MOLLY MILSKI, the Dining Services Supervisor on the Cedar Community Elkhart Lake Campus, has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, but has found her passion working in the dining department serving seniors. After graduation, she worked as a manager at Walgreens for four years, until her first child was born in 2000, when she quit to be a stay-at-home mom. Molly also babysat for another child until that child was school age. Soon after, she decided it was time to get back into the workforce, so she took a part-time job working evenings and weekends at an assisted living in Kiel as a cook and caregiver. She had experience with assisted livings since her grandparents lived in a community environment and she enjoyed older adults.

Molly joined Cedar Community in 2014, after the youngest of her four children started school. She has no professional training in food preparation, but she says she has four critics at home for whom she has cooked for many years. Molly has taken the culinary safe serve dietary and nutrition course through Cedar Community, and she also researches any special diets the residents may have, including celiac disease and diabetes. She oversees 10 team members including dining assistants and cooks, and ensures they are all aware of any special dietary needs.

Molly is passionate about working at Cedar Community and likes interacting with the residents. “I really enjoy this age group, and I do whatever I can to make the residents happy,” says Molly. She works full time and fills in whenever needed. “I feel it’s very important to be there for the residents. It’s part of my life now, taking care of them, and I wouldn’t be complete without it,” says Molly.

Molly also takes the time to be involved in furthering the team camaraderie at Cedar Community by participating on the leadership (LEAP) committee. In her spare time she enjoys being her children’s biggest cheerleader and watching them in their activities. Molly teaches religious education and also helped start the Kiel Area Youth Theatre in 2015, serving on the board and volunteering.

Molly’s team members who nominated her for the award also appreciate her enthusiasm and compassion, and shared some of their thoughts: “Molly is a wonderful coworker and great with the residents. She would do anything to help out, even if it has nothing to do with the kitchen.” “Molly is so caring and always has a smile on her face at work; she cares about everyone and has a great heart.” “Molly has great communication and rapport with the residents, they feel as though they can approach her about the kitchen menu, and she will listen to their thoughts and concerns.” “Molly does her best to make sure the residents feel as though they are being heard and have a voice.”

CARLA PEPLINSKI, Purchasing Manager, began her career at Cedar Community 23 years ago. She worked the night shift as a nursing assistant, which provided flexibility when her children were young.

She earned her certification through Cedar Community and became a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Carla worked as a CNA for two years when a daytime position became available in the nurse scheduling department. She enjoyed the challenge of the job, but was ready for a change, and transitioned to central supply and purchasing as team leader, before taking over as manager in 2013. “I like getting good deals and being able to save the organization money. I am a bargain hunter,” says Carla. She does the purchasing for the majority of Cedar Community, which includes four campuses.

Carla also serves on Cedar Community’s Leaders Empowering Achievement and Performance (LEAP) Committee. “The LEAP Committee helps the departments come together as a team, and emphasizes how much all team members are needed here to fulfill our mission of serving others,” says Carla. She also has an opportunity to interact with residents by assisting dining team members and serving meals on the households.

“It really puts into perspective why we are here. I have always had a soft spot for older adults. I didn’t really grow up with grandparents so I adopted some in the neighborhood where I grew up. I just always felt a connection with them. I enjoy that hour when I serve meals. There is a lot to learn from our residents and they enjoy conversing with people as much as I enjoy spending time with them,” says Carla. In her spare time, Carla enjoys weekends filled with grandchildren, six in all, and five days a week of Jazzercise.

Carla’s team members who nominated her for the award shared why they feel she is a great team member: “If Carla doesn’t know the answer to something, she knows exactly where to go or who to go to in order to find the answer.” “Carla is a true team player.” “It doesn’t matter what team you’re a part of, she makes sure we have the tools needed to do our jobs.”

new board members Sheri Katzer, Mary Kurer, Michael Wisnefske, and J. Douglas Sholund joined the Cedar Community Board of Directors in 2019. “Cedar Community is blessed to have a group of diverse and talented new board members step forward. They join the current board to continue our support for the leadership team’s work in strengthening the living experience our residents enjoy and expect as valued members of our community. We welcome them into our community as they bring their passion, skills, and energy to help us shape a bright future together,” says Joe Carlson, Cedar Community Board President.

Sheri has a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and a Master’s of Science in health administration. She is employed at Froedtert. Sheri has 25 years of nursing experience, with the last 18 in leadership roles. She is clinically well versed in medical surgical care, with an emphasis in geriatrics. She volunteers at the Menomonee Falls Community Center, and serves on the planning committee for the annual Senior Enrichment Fair.

“I am looking forward to serving as a board member so I may positively influence the environment, care, and quality of life for older adults,” says Sheri.

Mary has more than 20 years of experience in organizational development, business management, non-profit leadership, and adult education. Mary has proven success in designing, implementing, and facilitating workforce solutions that lead organizations toward the achievement of goals and strategic initiatives. Mary holds a Master’s degree in Adult Education and Organizational Development and a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services. In 2018, Mary launched her coaching and consulting practice, providing support to organizations to enhance individual, team, and organizational performance. “Cedar Community is a gem in our community and fills an important need. This is as a wonderful opportunity to work in partnership with others to help fulfill the organization’s mission. Our senior citizens are an important population and I recognize they paved the way for my generation. I want to ensure they are well taken care of and able to live a purposeful, fulfilled life among family and friends,” says Mary.

Michael is the past owner and president of West Bend Machine Works, Inc. He attended Moraine Park Technical College, and has a degree in machining. Michael served as a past board director for the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corporation (FCEDC), and served on the FCEDC loan and personnel subcommittees.

He has been an active volunteer at Cedar Community for the last six years, which has given him the opportunity to meet and talk with team members and residents, providing a better understanding of Cedar Community’s mission and future direction.

“It’s a privilege to be part of a community that prides itself on the value of its stability with growth, residents, employees, and land,” says Michael.

J. Douglas Sholund has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Ph.D in Economics and Finance from Purdue University.

Doug has worked as a security analyst and portfolio manager; started an investment advisory and portfolio management company for pension, profit sharing, and endowment funds; cofounded a networking and information exchange for senior executives; and taught corporate finance. He currently moderates a public and private company CEO forum. “As a four-year resident in Cedar Community’s independent living homes, I have enjoyed the many friendships, activities, and connections that develop here, along with the beautiful campus. I look forward to being a part of the future growth as we move forward,” says Doug.

Leaving your legacy

What you give and how you give it can make all the difference If you are like me, this may be the time of year you begin thinking about spring cleaning. Emptying closets, drawers, and cabinets to clean and declutter. Part of this process may include the thoughtful decision about what items to keep, to give, and to dispose of (or recycle).

If you have not done the same for your estate plan yet this year, I would encourage you to do so soon. Because what you have, what you give, and where you give it—can make all the difference when it comes to the impact of your bequests. Some things to consider:

W ill your intended gifts to loved ones result in unexpected tax consequences? W ill your intended gifts to loved ones or charitable organizations be decreased by tax burdens?

 Not all bequests—charitable or to family—are created equal.

For example, imagine you currently hold assets that include $100,000 in a Traditional IRA, and $100,000 in a brokerage account. You want half of these total assets to go to a charitable organization, and the other half to go to your son.

If you name Cedar Community as the sole beneficiary of your Traditional IRA, and your son as the sole beneficiary of your brokerage account, each beneficiary receives $100,000 in after-tax dollars. (There is no federal inheritance tax levied on gifts of cash, stocks and securities, and real estate.)

However, if you name Cedar Community and your son as equal beneficiaries of both accounts, Cedar Community still receives $100,000 (as a non-profit), and your son receives $81,500 in after-tax dollars (assuming a maximum 37 percent total income tax liability is applied to the son’s portion of the lump-sum IRA distribution).

Because your Traditional IRA dictates that taxes are levied on distributions, designating all or part of this gift to your son will dictate an income tax burden for him. This is just one example of how “what you give and where you give it” can ultimately impact the outcome of your intent.
