Same name, same amazing services, fresh new look When it comes to Cedar Community, our name is synonymous with high-quality senior living, in beautiful natural settings, provided with a Christian spirit, and offering some of the most diverse and vibrant lifestyle opportunities in the region. So why would we consider a rebranding of Cedar Community?

We have more competition in the senior services market than ever before. As we looked at the marketplace this past year, and all the competing messages, we felt we needed to refocus our messaging to reflect who we are and how we are different. That led us to assess what we communicate, how we communicate and how we look to the public.

We have worked hard over the past year evaluating our brand and our messaging, and on developing a new look that better reflects who we are as an organization. This has been a very thoughtful process that sought to honor our Christian mission and history, while developing a strong message about the unique experience in senior living we provide.

A NEW ADDITION PROVIDES MUCH

Vic and Gen Albiero sold their West Bend home in 2006 and moved into a condo. In 2011, when Vic’s health started to fail, he knew he wanted his wife to be in a safe place where there were other people around. Living in the condo and not driving as much, they were beginning to feel isolated. While Vic was the driving force in making a move to Cedar Community’s independent apartments, all six of the Albiero children were also instrumental and supportive of the move. The Albieros lived in Cedar Community’s independent living apartments for two years before Vic passed away. After his passing, the family realized Gen was having some memory loss and difficulties with thought processes. Gen moved to assisted living where she lived for one year before moving to Cedar Community’s memory care in the fall of 2014. “She loves it there. She is more outgoing and is thriving,” says Gen’s daughter, Jacci Gambucci. Gen’s son, Tom Albiero, agrees, “Our experience with Cedar Community in general has been very good, but our experience with the Cottages cedarcommunity.org

in particular has been excellent. It is obvious that much time was spent studying the needs of this type of patient and the best way to care for and treat them.

It’s working.”

When the Albiero families visited Gen they often brought one of their dogs along and saw how the residents were drawn to the dogs. Gen’s son Tom noticed this and was proactive in finding an appropriate dog to offer his mother’s neighborhood at the Cottages.

After a few attempts he was approached by a friend who had a family member with Alzheimer’s. She was looking for a new home for her family member’s dog. The owner wanted the dog to go to a memory care facility because she had seen firsthand what a positive impact dogs have on those with Alzheimer’s. With the help of the Gen Albiero family, Cedar Community’s memory care “family” was able to adopt Charlie, a five-year-old Shih Tzu, weighing about nine pounds. The residents,

volunteers, visitors and staff have all enjoyed the addition of this furry little friend. He is at the Cottages memory care Monday through Friday and on weekends when life enrichment staff is in the building. He spends his days with the residents in all three neighborhoods.

Both Charlie and the residents really enjoy their time together. “There are several residents I have never heard say a word while I was visiting my mom until Charlie came along. Now I see those residents talking to Charlie and belly laughing. It was definitely worth helping to get Charlie for them,” says Gambucci. The Albiero family has also graciously agreed to provide veterinarian care for Charlie for the first year, and are pleased that Charlie is part of the Cedar Community memory care family.

Daughter expresses deep

GRATITUDE

for the care of her parents

When Kate Hafeman lost her father in December of 2016, she took the time to reflect on what a great “mountain of a man” he was. She also graciously shared a letter with Cedar Community, complementing all of our team members on the care and compassion provided to her parents.

From the kitchen help, CNAs, RNs, social workers, chaplains to companions, as well as all the support staff – seen and unseen. On behalf of my parents William and Deborah Wurster and myself, I am compelled to somehow try and express in words the feelings and emotions that fill my inner spaces when I think back on my parents experience with Cedar Community. It really began when we were in search of a suitable place for my parents to live after selling their home and moving into Cedar Ridge where my mother really thrived and engaged in every activity imaginable. Knowing that my dad would eventually need more care, the campus system seemed to be a good fit for my parents during this life transition. In time, my dad realized moving to Cedar Bay East assisted living was necessary and shortly after the move he had a medical episode that finally tipped his health condition requiring services from your hospice program where he spent the last five months of his life – 68 steps away from mom’s apartment at Cedar Bay East. The beauty of this system allowed my mom to learn to live on her own for five months and still walk every morning to dad’s room where she would wake him up for breakfast every day until he finally passed away on December 21, 2016.

I always describe my dad as the smartest man I ever knew. The consummate planner and strategist, it was apparent that your beautiful system worked perfectly for my father.

Aside from being incredibly smart and well-schooled as a result of his Yale scholarship, we all knew him as a “mountain of a man” – literally and metaphorically.

A football player and coach, he was a formable man physically. He used this physical strength to carry the heaviest backpacks every summer deep into his favorite mountain wilderness when we were kids. He was also strong in another deeper way. For example, I shared in many a health emergency with my dad. Many of these emergencies left the medical staff thinking this would be the one that he wouldn’t be able to pull through. And because of the reoccurring historical pattern, I use to always say he had the strongest constitution in both body and spirit of anyone I ever knew.

I know when my sister and I got dad into the hospice program here, the staff didn’t think he would make it through the weekend. They got to see firsthand the rock solid constitution of our mountain man! While I know

that dad’s last month wasn’t exactly his definition of quality living, I think we were all grateful for the extra five months hospice provided. I personally am absolutely grateful for the extra time with dad, knowing he was comfortable and without pain. I am so grateful he was here with all of you. All the staff has been incredibly helpful and it is clear whether it is a new staff person or a long-tenured staff, everyone who is working the Cedar Community network is clearly here as a result of a personal calling to be of service to others. Everyone from the maintenance people to the administration genuinely care about the important work they are doing here. This is reflected throughout the ranks and especially to the staff who are working in the “trenches” where the rubber meets the road – the real work and reason for this community.

I have watched beautiful young people starting their career path care for my dad with grace and tenderness. I especially appreciated the language and communication they used to provide dad with a sense of dignity despite often very undignified daily chores. I have also watched the elder seasoned staff use their wisdom and experience to help us make decisions and hard choices while honoring our requests

without judgment. I have also witnessed the relationships that have been built over his time here and I thoroughly appreciate the tears shared with multiple staff during dad’s end days.

It is a rare gift to find an entire staff who work together in such cohesiveness. I worked in the service industry for 30 years and I need you to know I understand how hard it is. It is hard work, but it is such important, impactful work in people’s lives.

What you do, every job, is important. Your job makes such a difference in so many lives. But more importantly, YOU make a difference.

The very important work you do here is not for everyone.

It is not for the faint of heart. This is a job of finesse, multidisciplinary skill sets and genuine caring. You are one of the unsung heroes on the other end of life’s continuum.

Thank you for taking such good care of my dad and now my mom.

HIDDEN TALENTS Cedar Community is filled with many residents with interesting backgrounds, amazing talents and knowledge to share.

After his retirement from parish ministry serving the United Church of Christ, Steve and Carol Davidson were searching for a place to retire. They never heard of Cedar Community, until their dear friends, residents Bill and Nan Myers, whom they had known for many years, suggested they visit. It was an easy decision to make. They came from the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, near Traverse City, to move into an independent home at Cedar Community in June of 2016.

being part of a young and active retirement community, and yet have the continuum of care as the need may eventually arise. Steve likes the access to major cities and local communities. Carol traded the beautiful Lake Michigan sunsets for the prairie flowers, birds, wooded areas, trails, being close to nature and so many activities. They like the feeling of being part of a community that offers educational, spiritual, recreational and social opportunities.

Their list of why they chose Cedar Community is long. Having looked at others places in several states, they didn’t like their formality. They say Cedar Community is unique.

They like the people, the freedom, security, the independence and the resources available. They enjoy

Carol was born in New Kensington, Pa. She received her Bachelor of Arts in education from Michigan State University and Master of Arts in guidance and counseling. She was a teacher, an administrator of special education programs and most recently director of the Chamber of Commerce and director of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau in Benzie County, Mich.

They met in an education class during their junior year at MSU and married after graduation on August 22, 1964. Three years later, with a newly adopted infant in a car seat, Steve was called to serve at a church in Belleville, Ill. While there, cedarcommunity.org

a second son was born. Then it was on to a second church in San Juan, which sure enough, led to the birth of yet another son. Their three sons and their families now live in Charlotte, N.C.; Oxford, England and Evanston, Ill.; along with eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Steve’s mother, age 101, lives in South Carolina.

Carol enjoys painting with pastels and has created many wonderful masterpieces. She says there are so many beautiful nature scenes at Cedar Community to paint, especially the prairie and wooded landscapes. Some of her artwork was on display at the recent Cedar Community Art Show.

She was excited to find open studio painting workshops at Cedar Community’s retreat center at Cedar Valley, with options for art classes there, and in the local community.

Steve has recently started to play the piano. He enjoys the many opportunities to become involved at Cedar Community with music. He also enjoys running; he regularly runs seven to eight miles in any weather! Together they also enjoy biking, kayaking and cross country skiing. They have been exploring and finding new things to do in the local communities and cities. And yes, they are already committed Wisconsin cheeseheads!

They have traveled to England, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, Brussels, Belize, Guatemala, and of course their favorite is England, visiting family.

THE GREEN TEAM OF CEDAR COMMUNITY Who is the Green Team? No, we’re not little green people from outer space. The team is made up of volunteer Cedar Community residents and supporting team members who care about the health of our planet. Our mission is to encourage lifestyles and habits that promote the wise use of natural resources and help protect and sustain our environment. The Green Team meets quarterly, but members engage in research and education throughout the year.

Jewelry you don’t wear? Keep the pieces you love and offer the rest to family or friends. Donate the leftovers to Cedar Closet.

Cedar Community’s mission is …

I don’t consider myself much of an artist, but a few recent experiences with Paint and Sip classes have encouraged my creative side. If you haven’t been to such a class, I highly recommend them (especially those at Cedar Community’s retreat center at Cedar Valley, of course). You don’t have to come up with the ideas. You don’t even have to know the techniques. There is someone there who knows what to do, and how to do it. Step by step, your blank canvas becomes a masterpiece (sort of )! Even though the whole class is following the same set of directions, each painting is unique. Everyone has the chance to make their own masterpiece.

Cedar Community’s mission statement begins with the words, “To model Christ’s love for humanity.” When I consider what it means “to model Christ’s love,” I am reminded of my experiences in those painting classes.

To model Christ’s love means … if you are looking for an example of how you ought to serve, He is the one you can look to.

To model Christ’s love means … if you are wondering which technique to employ in your caregiving, you might start with compassion.

To model Christ’s love means … you have someone whose example can point you in the right direction, and whose grace will be there for you if you make a mistake.

A few years ago, I spent quite a bit of time interviewing residents, team members and family members about their impressions of Cedar Community. “What do you find unique about Cedar Community?” I asked. Many answers related to the depth of care and kindness exhibited by the team members. The servant leadership and commitment to excellence, in so many areas of our organization, is remarkable. Some residents had trouble putting their feelings for Cedar Community into words.

One woman said, “There is just a feeling here that is different than other places I’ve been. I think it has to do with faith.”

When I asked for reflections on the mission of Cedar Community, many respondents mentioned our Christian heritage. Affiliated with the United Church of Christ since our founding, resident and team members look for those values to be lifted up in community life. Residents

appreciate the opportunities provided for worship and spiritual care faith traditions. One team member encouraged us to name Christ in our mission statement.

She said, “If we aren’t clear about who we are, how do we know what we are supposed to be doing?”

To model Christ’s love means … we ought to love our neighbors as ourselves.

To model Christ’s love means … we know who we are.

But remember, we say our mission is “to model Christ’s love.” His love is our pattern, our template and the technique we employ to build a community of care and compassion. As we model His love for humanity, we look to His example of welcoming others. It is a matter of practice, not doctrine.

“To model Christ’s love for humanity by creating lifeenhancing relationships, services and environments” means step by step, our work continues to reflect His influence. John 10:10 records Jesus’s words, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” As Cedar Community embraces what it means to “live more,” we are guided by that same desire for full, purposeful, abundant life for all.

I recently attended a workshop led by an out-ofstate organization which refers to their entire team as artists. Their team members have different canvases.

A housekeeper looks for beauty in a well-made bed or a well-cleaned household. The grounds crew thinks of themselves as landscape artists. The CEO employs creativity in her vision of the future. I was intrigued by this idea, and I’m grateful to have someone guiding our brushstrokes as an organization. May all that we do together, “model Christ’s love for humanity.”

MINISTRY IN ELKHART LAKE Cedar Community’s Elkhart Lake campus may have the fewest number of residents, but the diversity of spiritual needs there is just as great.

Ecumenical chapel services are offered weekly in our clubhouse. Rev. Kathryn Kuhn, Cedar Community’s Director of Mission and Ministry, is a regular presence, but worship leadership is shared with local Lutheran and United Church of Christ clergy as well. An Ecumenical Bible study meets twice each month. Those who attend this study explore scripture, but more importantly they share prayer concerns with one another, and develop deep bonds of friendship.

St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church is just around the corner from our campus. Lay ministers from the church bring communion, lead prayer groups and offer Bible study to our Catholic residents once a week. When the weather is warm enough on a Sunday morning, you might see one of our residents guide her motorized scooter to Grace Lutheran Church (LCMS) which is just a block away. It is not uncommon to encounter local clergy visiting our residents who are their members, just to say hello, or to offer that needed connection to their home church.

This year, our Elkhart Lake campus has benefited from a partnership with Lakeland University.

Tyler Yost is a junior, studying religion and psychology. He is completing an internship at Cedar Community’s assisted living as part of his coursework, spending 10 hours each week visiting residents individually and leading discussion groups.

Our assisted living team members meet with residents and families regularly. They offer spiritual support as a part of our total plan of care for residents. Whether those needs are best met by our team members or by reaching out to a resident’s own pastor or priest, we remain committed to helping our residents “live more” spiritually, however we can.

tips from Cedar Community’s pharmacy

Q. I heard about a drug recall on my brand of medication.

What do I do?

A. I am sure you have heard of many recalls on everything

from toys to medications. When you hear of a recall, it often gets your attention if you are using that product.

Medications in commercial bottles all have a lot number and expiration date. The manufacturers issue a drug recall and the information should reference the involved lots of the medication. The FDA has input into the recall process and can classify the recall as involving just the stock held by pharmacies, or all the medication distributed and sold down to the level of the consumer. If the recall is down to the level of the consumer, your pharmacy will have information for you on whether your supply of medication is involved, and what to do with the medication.

Your information source about the recall (newspaper or internet) may list the lot numbers and expiration date of the products involved. As long as you can check the information on your bottle, you should be able to verify if your medication is affected. If your medication is in an amber prescription vial, you need to check your supply with your pharmacy. Pharmacies receive information from the manufacturer about how people may be reimbursed for their returned medication.

In 2015, I was moved from the role of social worker with Cedar Community’s hospice, home health, supportive care and the pathfinder care management programs to an administrative position. I was now the leader of the team of nurses, therapists, aides, caregivers, schedulers, office staff and chaplain with whom I worked “in the trenches” every day. I was responsible for this entire team and the day-to-day operations of the Cedar Community at Home program.

I am inspired by all of our team members and feel blessed every day I see them. I see and hear how hard they work, and how dedicated they are to their patients and families. This team is in the homes of the patients in our community, making decisions about what is best practice for patient care and how their patients will continue to receive the best health care possible.

This amazing team honors our mission statement every day when they walk through the doors of our Cedar Community at Home office and into the homes of our patients. The home health team develops special relationships when providing in-home nursing and therapy to patients who are vulnerable after a hospital or rehabilitation discharge. They encourage their patients to remain as healthy as they can, and remain inspired when they see the determination in their patient’s eyes. The in-home personal supportive care team provides caregiving services to people who need extra help in their homes so they can remain independent for as long as they are able. These team members develop special bonds and relationships with the people they serve. Our hospice team has the honor of creating relationships and providing special care and support for patients and their families at end of life. Overall, it is a humbling experience to provide care in someone’s home environment and watch the relationships that are built between this team and their patients.

I have learned a lot over the past 18 months both personally, and as a leader. I love Cedar Community, what it stands for, and I believe strongly in the mission that we all adhere to every day. I appreciate the opportunity that allows me to continue leading this team at what they do best – both individually and as a group. Finally, I appreciate that I can also watch them all continue grow individually and as a team. But why wouldn’t we ... after all, we are Cedar Community!

Bringing balance to our residents and patients Generous donations enhancing quality of care

As a not-for-profit, Cedar Community is blessed with supporters whose donations provide opportunities to purchase equipment that enhances the lives of our residents and patients.

Thanks to a donation from Jeff and Jean Reigle in memory of Jean’s mother, Laverne Schaller, Cedar Community’s therapy department was able to purchase a Biodex Balance System. “We wanted to express how much we appreciated everything Cedar Community had done for my mom and how wonderful the staff was in caring for her. The donation would have made my mom happy too,” says Jean.

Laverne lived at Cedar Community for nine years before she passed away in August of 2016.

She lived in assisted living for seven years after a fall in her home and two years in skilled nursing.

“We knew she wouldn’t be able to return home and a social worker at the hospital suggested Cedar Community,” says Jean. The family was

very impressed with the care provided to their mom. Jean’s brother, a physician in Wausau and Chairman of the Board for Marshfield Clinic, was blown away with the care his mother received.

They both felt if Laverne had not moved to Cedar Community, her life would have been shorter and not as pleasant. “The staff was amazing in caring for my mom. Her every need was always taken care of and the staff communicated with me regularly which helped me, help my mom,” says Jean. Near the end of Laverne’s life, the family was relieved when she received hospice care from Cedar Community and didn’t have to be moved from her current home in the health care center.

Jean has volunteered at Cedar Community and her husband, Jeff, currently serves on the Cedar Community Foundation board. Jeff’s parents also live in the assisted living and are very happy to be at Cedar Community.

Brian Ong, DPT, Manager of Outpatient Services, uses the touch-screen operation on the Biodex Balance System to navigate the step-by-step testing protocols for falls risk.

THE BIODEX BALANCE SYSTEM The Biodex Balance System improves balance, increases agility and develops muscle tone. The system includes a comprehensive fall risk screening and conditioning program and protocol to help a therapist begin a fall prevention program. The LiteGait allows Physical Therapist Ann Skalmoski to manually assist limb placement while reducing the risk of falls to the patient.

LITEGAIT® Thanks to our 2016 Enthusiast’s Club donors, the Cedar Community therapy programs were able to purchase a LiteGait. The gait training device provides patients with proper posture, reduces weight bearing, eliminates concerns for balance, and facilitates coordinated lower extremity movement, resembling a normal walking pattern. It can be used over ground or with a treadmill, bike or trampoline. LiteGait has a harness system which allows progression of a patient’s weight bearing load from zero to full weight bearing and frees the therapist to manually assist the legs and pelvis to help achieve proper gait patterns. “Being able to get a patient standing up and fully supported to bear weight allows the patient to progress faster with better recovery rates, and also optimizes some patient’s ability to walk again,” says Janice DeSmidt, Director of Rehabilitation Services.

As a non-for-profit organization, Cedar Community is fortunate to have many passionate Legacy League donors who have named Cedar Community in their will or estate plan or through a charitable gift annuity. “I have a long history with Cedar Community and I have always been impressed with its caring presence in the community. My father lived in independent living so when I found myself alone and looking for a place to settle, I came back to West Bend and choose an independent living apartment. It has been an excellent choice for me - a very safe, supportive, caring environment with lots of opportunities for growth and development, no matter what age I am. Being a Legacy League member supports a community that has enhanced my life so much,” says Jeanne Hammes.

Over the past eight years legacy or planned gifts have accounted for 50 percent of total funds raised for Cedar Community. These gifts help ensure the quality of care continues at Cedar Community well into the future and allow the organization to respond to residents’ changing needs through new programming or facilities. One example is Ken and Harriett Jahncke, residents who moved into an independent living home in 1978. They not only gave of their time, generously volunteering countless hours, but left their estate to Cedar Community. Thanks to the Jahnckes, Cedar Community was able to purchase a campus marque sign, establish a memorial garden and create a management training program.

A New Beginning: The Cedar Lodge Back in August of 2016, an electrical fire caused damage to the Learning Center building at Cedar Community. The 1976 vintage building housed a small clubhouse that was used as a social gathering place for independent living residents. It also had a larger meeting space and kitchen, often used for events for Cedar Community residents and other community groups. The look and feel of the building reflected its age.

Given the extensive nature of the fire damage, and the desire to provide a more robust social environment for Cedar Community residents, several options were considered, including razing the building and starting over.

A group of Cedar Community residents and team members held several meetings to talk about what that space could be used for in the future. From those ideas a new concept emerged; the damaged building would be rebuilt as a multi-purpose center for resident wellness and life enrichment programming. The exterior walls of the building would remain, but the inside would be largely gutted and rebuilt. The exterior would be redesigned to better fit its natural surroundings. The building will be renamed “Cedar Lodge,� representing its new identity.

The new Cedar Lodge will feature a large gathering room for events and parties, a completely remodeled kitchen/serving area, a pub room for socializing and watching sporting events, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a cozy hearth room with a fireplace for smaller gatherings and an outdoor patio space overlooking the beautiful wooded grounds of Cedar Community.

Construction is already underway, with a grand opening in the summer of 2017. Stay tuned for the details on the rededication and celebration of the new Cedar Lodge!
