Artist & Announcer Sadie Roberts Heath

Sadie Roberts Heath, an internationally recognized and award-winning artist, has graced the Polo fields again this year becoming the presenting artist of the 2014 and the 2015 Polo at the Point event. Heath’s multi-media art will be featured at Polo at the Point’s silent auction and her work will be on display during the event. She may be best known in the Polo community for her Polo at the Point paintings from 1989 to 1993 and for portraits of Maj. Ronald Ferguson, one of which hangs in the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club in Windsor, England. She has also been forever linked to the Senior Bowl capturing football greats like Joe Namath, Bo Jackson and Lee Roy Jordan as well as other famous athletes from our area. Heath was commissioned to paint a montage portrait for Steven Segal, and also for Grand Hotel Marriott and the Country Club of Mobile. Her Senior Bowl 50th anniversary mural adorns the lobby at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. She had a one-person showing at the Lexington Country Club during the prestigious Keeneland Races in Lexington, Ky. Her paintings have covered sports of all kinds including golf, soccer, football, polo, and sailing. In contrast to sports art, Heath also paints delicate florals, landscapes, and portraits in different mediums including watercolor, oil, and acrylics. Heath received her art education from St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, North Carolina and Stratford College in Danville, Virginia. She has since studied with distinguished artists Lucille Sisson, Paul Ladnier, Judi Betts, Jo Patton, Peter Potter and Don Andrews.

David Andrews

The Voice of Polo at the Point, David Andrews has been announcing Polo since 1979. He became involved with polo when he worked at the Real Estate division of Wellington, the developer of the Palm Beach Polo Club. He started announcing practice games and although he had brief aspirations of becoming a polo player, he returned to his strength and came back to announcing. “I like to get the audience involved as much as possible by explaining the game in an easy to understand fashion,” he says. David has been involved in the Polo at the Point event from the beginning and enjoys announcing the event, as the ambiance is friendly and sporting.

Comprised of lead guitarist Monte Tredway, bassist Bruce Nystrom and drummer Jason Bagwell, The Modern Eldorados formed in Mobile, Alabama in 1996 as a vehicle for Lyles’ original rockabilly/traditional–alternative country songs. Everything from their clothing to their guitars is authentic, again preserving the tradition and authenticity of the influences from which they are schooled. So soak up some Alabama honky tonk tradition at our Player’s Party at 6 pm, sponsored by Schwing Bioset.

Sincerest Thanks Dear Friends, The University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute is honored to be a part of Polo at the Point’s 27th year. With the help of your generous support, we will continue our mission as the preeminent cancer care, research and educational institution in the upper Gulf Coast region. The cancer battle is far from over, but we gain new insights daily as our own researchers work on the front lines of the battle against this complex and baffling disease. We are constantly motivated by 2,900 new patients who come to us every year for state-of-the-art treatment and hope, fueling a total of 50,000 patient visits annually. Funds raised through Polo at the Point will support important and promising new research to develop clinical screening tests for the early detection of pancreatic and ovarian cancers in an effort to reduce the high mortality rates associated with these diseases. Although competition for funding is fierce, two of our researchers, Dr. Yaguang Xi and Dr. Gary Piazza, recently received prestigious R01 research grants from the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health in colorectal and colon cancer. In the clinical care arena, we have plans to purchase property on Fairhope Avenue in Fairhope to construct a beautiful Mitchell Cancer Institute building to provide the latest in cancer care to residents of Baldwin County in a warm and caring environment. The project should be completed by early 2017! We continue to set our sights higher. We have launched a five-year strategic plan to become a National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center by 2020 through a partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This designation will be transformational, providing us with additional resources and access to further funding and clinical trials. We would like to congratulate the players, sponsors, committee members and attendees on today’s game and express our thanks for their generous support in the fight against cancer. Sincerely,

Michael A. Finan, M.D. Director, USA Mitchell Cancer Institute

Sincerest Thanks Dear Friends, Congratulations on the 27th Anniversary of Polo At The Point. On behalf of Thomas Hospital and the Thomas Hospital Foundation, we are deeply honored to be a part of this amazing event. Steeped in tradition, nowhere is polo played out more beautifully than at Polo At The Point. Through the years, the Thomas Hospital Foundation has received more than $280,000 from Polo At The Point. These gifts have been deeply appreciated and wisely used. We are an award-winning, 150-bed, acute-care hospital. An affiliate of Infirmary Health, we employ approximately 1,000 people, have more than 200 physicians and utilize the services of some 500 Auxiliary volunteers. This year’s proceeds will help expand services at the Thomas Hospital Birth Center where we offer award winning care. WomenCertified announced that Thomas Hospital won the Women’s Choice Award for: Best Overall Patient Experience, Best Hospitals for Patient Experience in Obstetrics More than 1,200 new additions arrive each year at the Birth Center at Thomas Hospital; this is 60% of the babies born in Baldwin County. Nearly half of our patients are enrolled in the Medicaid “Gift of Life” program for pregnant women. Our medical staff is made up of a caring and compassionate team of 11 Obstetricians and 11 Pediatricians. Additionally, we have the most talented Registered Nurses and technicians on staff, all caring professionals who support mom throughout the birthing experience with warmth and respect. The Birth Center has the highest breastfeeding rates in this region and consistently high scores in Patient Satisfaction. Thomas Hospital is pursuing the Baby Friendly designation. The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program that was launched by the World Health Organization and UNICEF in 1991 to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding and mother/baby bonding. In the United States, only 12.97% (267 hospitals) of babies deliver in a Baby Friendly facility. Currently two hospitals in Alabama have this prestigious designation and we are excited about our journey to achieve this elite status for Thomas Hospital. At Infirmary Health, our mission is LIFE. Thank you to the sponsors, volunteers and players who have worked so diligently to join us in this mission and to make this year’s Polo At The Point another great success. Best regards,

Ormand Thompson President, Thomas Hospital

CHuKKER A chukker is a period of play. Each chukker is seven minutes long. There are six chukkers in an outdoor game, and four in an indoor game.

lINE OF THE BAll This is the imaginary line that the ball creates each time it is hit. Players may not cross the line of the ball except in special instances.

FOul A foul is any infraction of the USPA rules. Fouls can range from dangerous riding to the line of the ball.

HANDICAP Polo players are rated from -2 to 10 goals. A -2 would be a beginner, and 10 goals is the pinnacle of the sport. The United States Polo Association’s ratings committee issues players’ ratings each year. A player’s handicap is based on their playing ability, horsemanship, team play, horses, and knowledge of the game. A team’s handicap is based on the total of the four players’ handicaps.

36 48

MAllET Mallets are used to hit the ball. Mallets range from 48” to 53”. The length of the mallet generally depends on the size of the horse. Mallets are primarily made of a bamboo shaft and a hardwood head. The ball is hit on the side of the mallet.

A polo field is 300 yards by 160 yards. You can fit nine football fields inside a polo field.

NEAR-SIDE Is the left side of the horse.

PENAlTIES

RIDE OFF An opposing player may press his horse into the other player’s horse. This maneuver is used to take another player off the line, or interfere with his shot. A ride off must be made at a similar speed to the other horse and at a proper angle.

Any infraction of the rules results in a penalty. The umpires will determine the severity of the foul ad award a penalty for 1 through 8.
