Discover Fly Fishing
This small class will teach beginners the basics of fly-fishing. Topics include: Tackle (rod, reels, lines, leaders, flies), casting, knots, local fly fishing opportunities, safety, conservation and etiquette. Each student will leave class with their own fly rod and reel kit to keep! Session # 1 will consist of classroom-based conversation and learning at the Family Learning Center. For session # 2, we'll head to the lake and test our skills at Veteran’s Park in Chaska; plan to bring your Minnesota fishing license so you can use your new fly rod. If you don't have a current license, you’ll still be able to practice your casting skills. In case of severe weather on the second night, we will use Thursday, May 16th as a makeup date. Proceeds from this class will benefit youth fly fishing programs through River City Fly Fishing, a local non-profit organization! 4910 Family Learning Center, Room 122

Nordic Pole Walking for Active Older Adults
What is Nordic Walking? Originating in Scandinavia, and still widely popular, it is simply walking with two poles, like for skiing, providing a better workout as well as better stability for those who have balance, knee or leg problems. It's low impact, fun to do, and easy to learn, making it an ideal form of exercise for anyone of any age. When done properly, it exercises 80 percent of your muscles and improves your overall heart mind and body health. Get started this summer with this great outdoor activity as Carver County Park Staff teach you how to use the poles, a proper walking technique, and pole-walking locations you can explore. All pole equipment will be provided for class participants to use. Meet at the park each day: May 8 @ Lk. Minnewashta Regional Park, May 15 @ Lake Ann Park, May 22 @ Lake Susan Park. SCHOOL REPORT A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams I am pleased and proud to report we have had a wonderful start to the school year. Our classrooms and hallways are filled with the sounds of students learning and connecting. Our fields, gyms, and theaters are bustling with activities. With the first quarter under our belt, I know this year will bring great things. In this issue of the School Report, now coming to you as part of our Community Education catalog, you will find important information about the state of our school funding and associated legislative impacts. You will be reminded of our strategic plan, which is driving the work of our district. You will also hear about some of the wonderful things happening in our buildings. From our academics to our fine arts to our extracurriculars to our athletics, great things are happening here at Eastern Carver County Schools. WE ARE PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR PERSONAL BEST AND BE READY FOR WHATEVER THEY CHOOSE AFTER GRADUATION.
Chanhassen Elementary recognized as a National Blue Ribbon school Chanhassen Elementary School was one of 353 schools recognized nationwide as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2023. Nine schools in Minnesota received the honor this year. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups on assessments. Only 202 schools from Minnesota have been awarded this prestigious recognition since the program started in 1983. This is the first time an ECCS school has received the award. “THIS AWARD IS A TESTAMENT TO THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION OF THE ENTIRE CHANHASSEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEAM,” ECCS SUPERINTENDENT DR. LISA SAYLESADAMS SAID. “I AM SO PROUD OF OUR STUDENTS, STAFF, AND FAMILIES FOR THE WORK THEY HAVE DONE IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM TO SUPPORT STUDENT SUCCESS. THEIR STRATEGIC AND DATA-DRIVEN STUDENT-CENTERED APPROACH HAS MOVED THE NEEDLE FOR ALL OUR STUDENTS WHILE CLOSING ACHIEVEMENT GAPS.” National Blue Ribbon Schools serve as models of effective and innovative school practices for state and district educators and other schools throughout the nation.
None of that work happens without you. The partnership and support of the communities we serve is so important. I am so proud to be your superintendent and proud of the work we are doing collaboratively to give our students what they need to succeed. Together, Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams Superintendent
ECCS School Report Fall 2023
Fiscally responsible budget a continued priority in ECCS When the Minnesota legislature adjourned in late May, it closed the books on a whirlwind session that had significant impacts on education. It’s important to understand that despite breathless news coverage this past legislative session of a financial windfall for school districts, the end result for ECCS and other districts across the state was a mixed bag. Yes, there were historic increases in school funding, for which we are very grateful. Among the key wins was a general education formula increase of four percent in Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 and two percent in FY2025, with the formula being linked to inflation beginning in FY 2026. The special education cross-subsidy was also reduced by 44 percent in FY 2024, FY 2025, and FY 2026, and 50 percent in FY 2027. These are all welcome and much needed increases in funding, but even those increases alone don’t keep up with current or past inflationary pressures and other costs districts face annually.
Watch this short video to learn more about new school funding and the impact in ECCS Alongside the increase in funding came a historic number of mandates, many of which are either funded for one or two years or not at all. On the expense side, changes to unemployment law, paid family medical leave, teacher retirement, shifts to mandatory bargaining of traditional management rights, and escalated rates of inflation particularly in the insurance and utility markets will significantly impact the new funding received from the state. As a result, much of that increased funding is already tied to programming and not available for other district needs. Even with the historic funding increase, MN public school funding formulas lag behind inflation and have since the early 2000s.
MISSION We prepare every student to achieve their personal best, engage in lifelong learning, and be a thoughtful and responsible citizen.

ECCS School Report Fall 2023
Friday Night Lights
Each week throughout the school year, we will visit a school across Eastern Carver County Schools. Some weeks the plan may be to stop in multiple classrooms by grade, or by subject. Other weeks it may highlight a certain specialist group. The purpose is to give families and our community a glimpse into the everyday learning environment happening in our buildings. A chance to spotlight the incredible work our teachers and staff do on a daily basis for our students, and to showcase the incredible work our students produce as well. So, keep your Eye on ECCS!
Friday Night Lights is more than a high school football game. It is a community event. Even more so when Chanhassen and Chaska meet. It is an event that brings the district together, whether one is wearing purple or navy blue. Whether one cheers for the Storm or the Hawks. There are school bands, mascots, cheerleaders, student section themes, halftime performances, and hundreds of Chaska Chanhassen Football Association athletes tearing across the field with pride. There’s a Tackle Cancer fundraiser before and during the game. Most years it hits too close to home. This year, Bluff Creek Elementary fifth-grader Owen Macik was honored. Macik was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in May. LARGE CROWDS Already this year at Chanhassen High School, more than 2,500 tickets were sold for home football games with Owatonna (Sept. 8), Waconia (Sept. 22) and Mankato West (Sept. 29). That number certainly would have been topped a fourth time if not for a large rainstorm that blanketed the state for much of two days last week.
Despite the light rain and windy conditions, a large crowd, including full student sections for both schools – some students arrived 90 minutes early for the best seats – filled much of the stadium bleachers. “The Homecoming game with Waconia, that was the largest crowd I’ve ever seen,” Chanhassen athletic director Mike Bailey, a former head football coach in the program as well, said. “We ran out of parking for that one really fast.” Chanhassen claimed the traveling Jug trophy for a second straight year with a 21-0 win over rival Chaska. First-half scores from Dominic Castagnetto and Daxton Bush from quarterback Brayden Windschitl were too much to overcome for the Hawks (4-4). For all of the action on the field, behind the scenes, though, are countless hours of preparation and then execution. The full story is available by scanning the QR code below!
