A New Life in Norway 18 August • Here I am
This is my blog. I come from Eritrea. I write about my life in Norway, my family and my friends.
Hi everyone! My name is Selam, and I come from Eritrea. I live in Oslo, an international city with many nice parks and beautiful views of the Oslofjord. I really like Norway because it is peaceful and safe. The nature is amazing, and I enjoy walking in the green forests or by the dark blue sea.

← → My family is in Eritrea. I have a loving and caring mother, a hard-working father and two lovely sisters. We are a very close and happy family. I miss them a lot, but we talk on the phone or video chat almost every day. They always ask me many questions about my new life in Norway. What can you tell us about Selam? Do you think she is happy in Norway?
I have many good friends here, some from Norway and some from other countries. We like to meet in cozy cafés, go shopping or watch funny films together. I speak Tigrinya, English and a little Norwegian. I enjoy using these languages when I am with my friends. They are kind and helpful. They often help me with Norwegian, and I help them with English.

Rayan
Hi, Maria!
Maria
Hi, Rayan! How is your English learning going?
Rayan
It’s going well, but sometimes it’s difficult. My first language, Arabic, helps me remember new words when they are similar. However, sometimes it’s confusing because the grammar is difficult, and I often make mistakes.
Maria
I know! In my language, Ukrainian, some sounds are very different from English. I make grammar mistakes too, but I try to speak English every day. →

Rayan
I like that I can speak three languages now. Norwegian and Arabic help me learn English faster, but I try not to mix them. Besides, it’s important to know English, because it’s an international language. You can use it all over the world.
Do you agree with Rayan that speaking other languages can help you learn English? Why or why not?
Maria
Exactly! English is very important for us. I use it at school and with friends from other countries. It helps me learn new things. What about you, Rayan?
Rayan
English is also important for me at work. I write emails, read reports and sometimes speak to international clients. Without English, it would be much harder.
Maria
Do you think English will be important in the future?
Rayan
Yes, definitely! I want to travel, work abroad and meet new people. English will help me a lot.
Maria
Me too. Let’s practise together and get better every day!
Rayan
Yes, that’s a good idea!

Learning a Language By Olivia McMahon
Learning a language is like doing a jigsaw puzzle of a million pieces with a picture that keeps changing. It’s like getting lost in a foreign city without a map. It’s like playing tennis without a ball, like being an ant in a field of grasshoppers. It’s being an acrobat with a broken leg, an actor without a script, a carpenter without a saw, a storyteller without a middle or an end. But then gradually it’s like being out in the early morning with the mists lifting. It’s like a chink of light under a door, like finding the glove you were looking for, catching the train you thought you were going to miss, getting an unlooked-for present, exchanging a smile. And then one day it’s like riding a bicycle very fast downhill.

Creative Corner Your Task
Make your own conversation between 2–4 people.
Learn •
to talk about and compare English with other languages you know
•
to share experiences of learning languages
•
to give advice on how to learn a language
Step 1 Read the conversation between Maria and Rayan on pages 15–16. Think about: • What do they talk about? • How do they start and end the dialogue? • What challenges to learning English do they talk about? If you want, you can read it out loud to practise speaking.
Step 2 Think about your own ideas. Use these questions to help you prepare: • What strategies do you use to learn English? • How do the languages you know help you learn English? • Which language is your favourite? Why? • Why is learning English important to you? • You can write short notes before you start creating your conversation.
24
Engelsk 3 Textbook
Step 3 If you need help, look at these sentence starters. Choose the ones that fit your ideas. How is your English …
I need English to …
I learn English by …
It is a good idea to …
My best strategy is …
Let’s practise …
I find it difficult to …

Step 4 Now you are ready to write your own conversation. Write at least eight to ten lines. Choose an appropriate title.
Check •
Does it sound natural?
•
Can you say all the words?
•
Do you understand what you wrote?
You can record yourself and listen to it before presenting your conversation in class.
Step 5 Read your conversation out loud.
I’m fine, thank you! Hello! How are you?

Understand the words 1
What do these words mean? language • understand • goes to head • heart
2 Match some of the words with pictures you find on the internet or your own drawings. 3 Write a sentence with each word. 4 Try to explain the quote in your own words: What is Mandela tryingłto tell us?
łWrite about your experienceł 5 Write about your thoughts and feelings in these situations: • You are at school and your teacher speaks to you in your own language? • You are at the airport, and you must speak English. • You go to a hospital, and you must speak Norwegian. 6 Read your writing to somebody in your class.
łUse your imagination 7 Make a poster to show what the quote means to you. You can use: • drawings or photos • short sentences or words in English • something from your own language 8 When you are ready, share your work with the class.
