• The ‘leaning tower’ leans even more than the famous leaning tower of Pisa. • E dward II briefly took refuge at Caerphilly Castle in 1326 as he unsuccessfully fled from the army of his wife, Isabella, and her companion, Roger Mortimer. • G ilbert de Clare, who began Caerphilly Castle in 1268, was known as ‘Red Gilbert’, reputedly because of his red hair.
