Volunteers Students make great volunteers too! Upper-grade students can make great Book Fair volunteers! Recruit some enthusiastic students to help with bagging books, doing booktalks, or becoming reading pals for younger students. Organized groups such as Little League, scouts, or student council groups are often glad to help with school community events.

Invite Families to Your Book Fair Make your Book Fair a “Grand” experience for everyone! You can reach more families by planning multiple events throughout the week at different times of day. Many schools are having great success by incorporating a Grandparent’s Day event or inviting loved ones to their Book Fair to spend time with a special student in their lives.

“Book-nic”

R E E L W

OR L D

Lake Joy Elementary School in Warner Robins, Georgia, hosted a Book-nic that allowed students to eat outdoors with teachers and family members and enjoy an extended recess for Book Fair browsing and reading. Invitations went out to parents and grandparents weeks before the Fair and the event was a great success.

8

Promote the Book Fair to Your School Community The One for Books program is a simple and easy way to involve your school community in your Book Fair. Members of the community are invited to purchase a Book Slip by donating loose change and/or dollars. The slips are signed by the purchaser and displayed for all to see. The funds collected are used to buy more books from the Book Fair. You decide how the books are distributed!

One Little Slip Lexington Christian Academy, Lexington, Kentucky, launched their One for Books program a week before the Fair. In keeping with the Take a Reading Road Trip theme, the principal, guidance counselor, and spiritual life director created a parody of the movie Cars, which they presented as an unfolding drama during daily announcements. The school also decorated the hallways with 1,000 colorful Book Slips. Classrooms competed for 10 extra minutes of recess. The 300 students on campus donated more than $1,000 and the school stocked classrooms and libraries with affordable, quality books.

Send a Favorite Book on a Journey Good books are meant to be read and shared. Too often, good books experience limited readership. Once they are read, they are usually placed on shelves and forgotten. This year, Scholastic Book Fairs invites you to join us in a campaign to get good books read by more people. We invite you to join us on a Book Journey.

What Is a Book Journey? A Book Journey is a unique way to connect more people with books they might otherwise miss. A journey begins with a Book Sponsor – a student, family, classroom, or school – any individual or group with a book they are eager to share.

Point of Departure

Print the Bookplate and Certificate: Book Sponsors print the bookplate and securely tape it to the book’s inside front cover. The certificate lists the Book Sponsor’s user name and password.

Start the Journey: Once the book is read and registered, Book Sponsors give the book to a Book Mate who promises to read the book, log its location online, and then pass it to a new Book Mate.

Follow the Journey: By visiting the Book Journey Web site anyone in the reading chain can track their book’s travels. Where journeys ultimately lead is a question everyone will look forward to with anticipation and interest! Visit www.scholastic.com/mybookjourney

Choose a Book to Travel: The book can be currently owned or something new from the Book Fair. Register your book at www.scholastic.com/mybookjourney. The Web site then generates a bookplate that contains a unique tracking number and instructions.

for classroom activities, an interactive map, fun stats, and more!
