Career Episode 1 Introduction CE1.1 In the first career episode of my professional development, I would like to explain a project which I completed successfully during my second year of engineering from May 2010 till July 2010. I was doing Bachelors of Science in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Shaaz College of Engineering and Technology, Telangana, India. It was a mini project titled as ‘Vehicle Speed acquisition System’. I performed all the project chores within the college campus only under the supervision of my project guide.

The campus has all the essential technical equipments required to become an expert engineer. For all the four branches of engineering, the college uses innovative teaching methodology for learning, research work, and teaching. It covers wide range of subjects in sciences, humanities, social sciences, and technology and keeps highest standards of higher education and scholarship programs.

CE1.3 The mini project was dedicated to lower the increasing number of accidents owing to speeding of the vehicles. It was decided to design a circuit for the highway traffic police that would act as a vehicle speed controller. This circuit would provide a digital display in accordance with the vehicles speed and also sounds an alarm if the vehicle speed exceeded the permissible speed for the highway.This circuit consisted of two LDR sensor installed on the highway 100m apart. The circuit displayed the time taken by the vehicle in crossing this 100m with a resolution of 0.001 sec.

CE1.4 The objective of the project was to lesser the number of road accidents and to assist the police to control on the vehicular speed. The data counted by the counter i.e. number of objects passing would be displayed on the lcd display, which would be connected to the one of the port of microcontroller. LCD displays would be used to see the objects and the main components using are Microcontroller, IR sensor and lcd display.

CE1.5 My specific duties while executing the project were as follows: ❖ Understand the basic structure of the proposed system ❖ Understand and identify the different components required to design the system. ❖ Prepare the block diagram of the system ❖ Coding and testing of the system. ❖ Holding bi-weekly meetings for project status update.

Personal Engineering Activity CE1.6 I started the project after collecting the necessary details from the available books in the library, journals from the newspapers and also browsed the internet. Subsequent to this, I defined the key terminologies of the project and to get a better idea reproduced a block diagram of the project. I prepared the summary of various methods used to control the vehicular speed in diverse parts of the world.

CE1.7 I observed that this number depends on many factors: socio-economic condition, population, availability of primary sources, types of economy etc. I prepared several charts related to the topic to analyze the data more carefully. I also found that road accidents are one of the most alarming issues of the world today. It has cut across all disciplines and professions and has developed many complexities.

CE1.8 I had one fellow student as my team mate and I discussed major project issues with him.

Finally, I prepared and finalized a block diagram of the proposed speed controller. I used microcontroller, Light Dependent Resistor, LCD, and power supply in the system. Some key software programs I used in the project included Keil software for c programming, Express PCB for lay out design, and Express SCH for schematic design.

CE1.9 To execute the task efficiently, I researched on methodology to enhance my knowledge. I used internet search and borrowed books form library. I also took advice and suggestions from my senior business analysts and co-system analysts on process modeling and analysis. I attended discussion sessions and monthly performance review meetings on regular basis to assess the overall project report. I seek my senior colleagues’ assistance while encountering difficulties during the project.

CE1.10 I documented daily progress reports and project reports and also controlled every phase of the project.I prepared a more systematic and efficient communication plan. The communication plan included determining the best methods to receive, distribute, access and update information. It acted as a basis for meetings, interviews, walkthroughs, and other communications mode between stakeholders and team. I designed and developed block diagram of the project and also noted down all the hardware and software requirements of the system.

CE1.11 I then identified the benefits and risks of the change. I evaluated all the possible options with each other and chose the best software program techniques. To do so, I did a preliminary research on most popular coding techniques and also asked senior IT engineers advice. Then, I used Keil uVision for designing the system. I prepared the pin diagram and schematic diagram of the system.

CE1.12 I always considered a professional and ethical code in the project execution.I regularly visited the library, browsed the internet, read newspaper articles, and latest journals to attain advanced knowledge on the project topics. I read equipment designing books for continuous development of my career. I have a keen interest in designing of equipment.

CE1.13 I completed a training program on industrial safety and on hazard and operability study. I took training on safety practice for active project chores covering quality management,

documentation and records, material management, and production systems. I also successfully completed training on process validation and equipment validation.

CE1.14 I have performed post and pre-job equipment inspection for health and safety reasons and conducted root cause analysis and generated reports and recommendations for all failures. Ensured that adequate shift handovers were performed and documented and shift briefings along with inspection and evaluation of workplace environments, equipment and practices, in order to ensure compliance with health and safety standards and government regulations.

CE1.15 I used Microsoft Visio to draw the process flows and Microsoft Word for process descriptions. I used Microsoft Power Point to present my work to the respective audiences and Microsoft Project Manager to draw project progress report. To make the presentation more effective, prior to the kick-off meeting, I sent the soft-copy of the presentation slides to all attendees via e-mail. I also arranged departmental outgoing activities every month for improving team spirit.

Summary CE1.16 This project helped me gaining lots of things both professionally as well as personally. I gained some valuable experience during this time. I enhanced my knowledge and gained valuable practical experience. I interacted with people from different culture and back ground. This improved my communication skills. I initiated using the lean techniques to identify and eliminate non-value added activities within the processes. I designed and developed change management plan and effective communication plan successfully and efficiently.

Career Episode 2 Introduction CE2.1

The second career episode of my professional engineering development highlights the project ‘Two ways wireless messaging system in rural areas by usingZIGBEE. I worked on this project from October 2010 to January 2011. The project was based on the transmission and receiving of the data from remote plces with the help of ZigBee communication device. Data Security was the primary concern for every communication system as well as it was the key objective of this project too.

There are many ways to providesecurity data that is being communicated. However, in this project security was assured irrespective of thehackers are from the noise.

This Project described a design of effective security for data communication bydesigning standard algorithm for encryption and decryption. Zigbee is a PAN technology based on the IEEE802.15.4 standard. Unlike Bluetooth or wireless USB devices, ZigBee devices have the ability to form a meshnetwork between nodes. Meshing is a type of daisy chaining from one device to another.

My foremost duty was to analyze the situations given to me and come up with allocation system alternatives. After that I had to speculate the framework and pattern of the proposed system. Detecting the various fault levels in the existing systems and choosing the equipments accordingly was also entrusted to me, under proper supervision.

I faced innumerable challenges throughout the project life-cycle and the credit of the success was to be shared by all the team members along with me. Each played their part to the utmost good faith and optimum diligence.

communication. I went to library to gather details about embedded systems and microcontrollers. I also read latest journals, articles from the newspapers and from internet to sharpen my knowledge and expertise.

I prepared a block diagram of the proposed communication system. I also read details of Zigbee technology that allowed the short range of an individual node to be expanded and multiplied, covering a much larger area. I generated the source information by a keypad and then encrypted it. After this, I sent it to the destinationthrough Zigbee modules. I also checked the data from receiving system and decrypted it according to a specificalgorithm.

I, then, displayed it on the LCD. In this project, I used regulated 5V, 500mA power supply. 7805 three terminalvoltage regulator for voltage regulation. I also used Bridge type full wave rectifier to rectify the ac output of secondary of 230/12V step down transformer.I prepared a project report in English with the help of Microsoft Word to be presented to the project supervisor and my Head of the Department. Additionally, I also make sure that all the process had no damage to the environment considering environmental standards.

I used my engineering background technical knowledge in electronics engineering and calculated innumerable calculations of the project. I also charged the 48V battery system on periodic intervals and recorded each cell output to analyze the performance. I also conducted few tests on batteries, namely specific gravity test and open circuit voltage test. I always upgraded my engineering knowledge skills by studying information. I also browse the internet and visit my local library for books with the latest technologies.

In my job responsibilities, I followed British Standards (BS) and International Electric Codes (IEC) in all devices and instruments. I regularly exchanged ideas and knowledge with senior professionals and peers with prior experience in similar projects. I used my software skills and employed the software tools in designing and other project activities. I used AutoCAD and Microsoft (MS) Office Applications like MS Excel MS Word, MS Power Point in different phases of the project.

I prepared design calculations for essential project parts under the guidance of my project guide. He verified the calculation sheet and project schedule. I provided the operating procedure of the major project system and provided training to operating team. I also took training on hazardous task handling and on equipment qualification. I managed the activity of process engineer and distributed their work task to meet the project timelines I successfully completed the project with the help of other key departments required for the successful execution of the project.

I mentored weekly progress meetings and prepared reports in English to submit them to the management. I maintained service observations on weekly basis and also prepared a report for this. It assisted in minimizing work deficiencies and enhances the project quality on the whole. I documented the reports in English with the help of MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Word and sent them through MS Outlook to my supervisors.

In this I would place a light resource by that if any object passes though the sensor the rays not reach the sensor. The ldr would convert these signals into electric signals and that outputwould be fed to the one of the pin of microcontroller. In this micro controller I would use the Timer as a counter such that the counter would count the number of objects.

I attended regular meetings every two weeks with my supervisor and the other colleagues to discuss project findings and work-in-progress report of the project. I observed that wireless is the buzz of communication industry today. The field of wireless communication is growing leaps and bounds day by day. There have been many advancements taking place in the semiconductor industry leading to more and more advancements in wireless technology. There is a huge scope for improvement in wireless communication technology. One of the highly hyped advancement is in Wireless LANS. For example the data can be transmitted between different LANS by using simple coding technique and that too very efficiently.

Wireless RF communication is finding a huge development in Satellite Communications.

The RF signals are sensed and reflected back to the earth stations. These signals contain information about weather forecasting, geological surveys and other cosmic developments. So, this project can be a sustainable solution for future and can be used to form a safe transportation.

Continued Professional Development The entire project lead to far corners of the modern day practical applications of the real-time scenarios of the ongoing industrial life and made me perceive all the challenges and hurdles faces in those conditions. CE1.2 This project aimed to develop a site at Fern gully, Crescent, South Morang for the client. I was appointed as and Estimator and Quantity Surveyor. It was a single story building, and the client asked complete designing of the building. I went to the site to gather preliminary details and made a proposal draft out of the collected data.

CE1.3 The client analyzed thoroughly the draft proposal prepared by me. Finally, my design and got approved and I was appreciated from both ends. Personal Engineering Activity CE1.5 I began my work by a thorough study and analysis of the existing process. I proposed a novel layout and contacted with different material suppliers. I sent them quotations for my requirements. I extracted all the vital details and formed a report for my company and my client to comprehend and then executed the project as desired and also in a successful way. It was a brainstorming task for me.

CE1.6 I collected the conceptual plan from the architect and thoroughly studied it. I also took working drawings for the site. I also obtained a copy of estate guidelines approval from my company and always adhered to them during the project. I noted the main project requirements and made a MS-Word file in English to be sent to every stakeholder and supplier.

CE1.7 I faced some major issues too in this project as it was the first single-handed project. I assured that concrete slab was designed as per structural drawing. It was a crucial component of the whole project. I engineered roof truss frames, and double gazed all the sliding doors of the building. I always took care of safety issues and other project issues to complete this project effectually.

CE1.8 I had gained theoretical knowledge from my studies in the university, but this project was my first hands-on practical experience as a Site Structural Engineer, and I found that application of work was different from what I had learned at university. With the help of my supervisors, I succeeded to avoid obstacles and learned how to lead the project in a short period.

CE1.9 I prepared the complete work plan. I took data from similar projects, I made calculations based on the old experiences, and I prepared a draft work plan.
