DO YOUR CURRENT COWHERD GENETICS FIT YOUR ENVIRONMENT?

HAVE YOU IF

wondered how to maintain maternal heterosis without the hassle of multiple sire breeds, multiple breeding groups and inconsistent color?

YOU’VE

pondered these questions, it might be time to get reacquainted with modern Brangus genetics. THEY ARE THICKER, CLEANER, CALMER AND BETTER THAN EVER.

WAS YOUR GRANDDAD

wise to include a dose of Indicus genetics in his cowherd to handle the challenges of big, dry, hot country?

THEY’LL GAIN AND GRADE WITH THE BEST CATTLE IN THE INDUSTRY

RESULTS FROM THE BRANGUS VALUE PROJECT –BRANGUS—SIRED STEERS FED IN THE LAST THREE YEARS IN SW KANSAS: DAILY GAIN 3.87; PAYWEIGHT 1,463; 87% CHOICE AND PRIME – 37% PREMIUM CHOICE. GRID PREMIUM $56.52/HD. DRY MATTER CONVERSION 6.14.

THAT’S HOW WE BREED ‘EM AT CDP BRANGUS, ONE OF THE NATION’S LARGEST AND MOST PROGRESSIVE PURVEYORS OF BRANGUS AND ULTRABLACK GENETICS.

Bulls from CDP Brangus are working in cowherds from Florida and the Gulf Coast to the fescue belt and the desert country of west Texas and New Mexico. We even have bulls producing incredible baldy replacement heifers in South Dakota—yes, they’ll grow hair and endure the winter just fine.

THE HETEROSIS KICKER

Ranchers in big country already understand the benefits of heterosis. In settings where cows aren’t pampered and are expected to pull their own weight, maternal heterosis is the secret sauce. But it isn’t a secret. Forty years of research by virtually every ag college in the country shows that a cow with the benefit of maternal heterosis has a 25% lifetime productivity advantage over a straightbred cow. And with Brangus, the heterosis kicker is bigger because of the Indicus effect.

By pedigree, Brangus are 5/8ths Angus and 3/8ths Brahman. But, over time, selection for Angus-type traits such as early puberty, marbling and fleshing ability has moved the needle to about 70-72% Angus, on average (or, about 28–30% Brahman). This is based on DNA analysis. When mated to your Angus-based Bos taurus cows, the Indicus percentage in the retained heifers would be around 14-15%. While this seems small, it is turbocharged because the Indicus faction produces about twice as much heterosis compared to a comparable cross of Taurusbased composites.

In extraordinarily harsh environments, a fulldose Brangus cow is the best option. But in many challenging desert environments where you still get some winter, an Ultrablack cow may be the best solution. An Ultrablack is a Brangus crossed with an Angus. Looking at an Ultrablack cow,

you can barely see the inducus influence, but you’ll see it in her productivity and longevity.

Maintaining an Ultrablack cowherd is easy because we produce registered Ultrablack bulls alongside our Brangus offering. This is an easy and effective way to maintain maternal heterosis while...

KEEPING THEM BLACK...KEEPING THEM CHOICE...AND KEEPING THEM LONGER.

Indicus-composite cows are notorious for longevity. And since cow depreciation is considered to be the second highest cost of running a cowherd, second only to feed/ grazing costs, getting an extra calf or two during the life of a cow is a significant boost to the bottom line.

WHO ARE WE?

CDP Brangus is a group of Brangus breeders dedicated to producing superior beef genetics that boost cowherd productivity and produce feeder calves that excel in the feedlot and packing plant. You can expect your Brangus or Ultrablack cows to work the far edges of your massive desert pastures, miles from water, nursing growthy calves and being trailed by Brangus and Ultrablack bulls with an incomparable work ethic and a heterosis-induced fertility boost. They’ll out-work and out-last your Taurus-based cattle.

You already know that well-managed grazing stimulates the range. It also stimulates your bank account. A Brangus or Ultrablack cow can be expected to cover the corners of your range, thus contributing to your range management and stewardship goals.

enhanced EPDs backed up by multi-generational performance data on every single trait that is measurable.

With annual bull production of approximately 500-hd, we’re big enough to meet the needs of the largest producers, but we are family-oriented and value our single-bull customers as well. We host two annual bull sales and have private treaty bulls available year round.
