As we reflect on the past year, we are overwhelmed with pride and excitement as we share the remarkable accomplishments that have defined the journey of Creative Destruction Lab Atlantic in the 2022-23 Annual Year in Review.
One of the most remarkable accomplishments of this year is the momentous milestone we have reached–surpassing $1 billion in equity value creation. This incredible achievement is a testament to the boundless potential of our ventures, the hard work of our founders, and the dedicated support of our mentors, partners and the entire CDL-Atlantic community.
Our collaboration with The Economist’s World Ocean Technology and Innovation Summit catapulted CDL-Atlantic onto the global stage. This collaboration showcased the expertise of our mentors, ventures, and alumni in the field of ocean technology, reaffirming our position as a leader in driving innovation in this critical domain.
Our commitment to nurturing local innovation and entrepreneurship has never been stronger. This year, we were honoured to deepen our ties with New Brunswick by offering Session 4 of the Prime stream in partnership with the University of New Brunswick (UNB). We also expanded our presence by hiring a venture manager based in the province, further solidifying our dedication to the region.
Our reach continues to expand far beyond our shores, with companies as far away as Australia participating in the CDL-Atlantic ecosystem. This international engagement underscores the global relevance and impact of our program.
At CDL-Atlantic, we believe that diversity fuels innovation. We are thrilled to report that an outstanding 70% of the companies admitted to the Prime stream cohort and 30% of the Oceans stream cohort had female founders or C-suite representation. These numbers demonstrate our steadfast commitment to building an inclusive ecosystem where groundbreaking ideas know no gender boundaries.
These milestones and accomplishments are a testament to the dedication, hard work, and collaborative spirit of our entire CDL-Atlantic community. It is through this unwavering support, mentorship, and the relentless pursuit of excellence that we continue to push the boundaries of innovation. We look forward to another year of groundbreaking achievements and transformative innovation.

We asked our graduates…
WHAT DID YOU FIND WAS THE MOST VALUABLE ELEMENT IN THE PROGRAM?
“The breadth and depth of the experience of the mentors. They are drawing upon their own entrepreneurial experience as well as experiences from other ventures they mentor, plus their expansive networks. CDL holds their mentors to strict standards, and I appreciate the caliber of the people we were able to work with. It would have taken a great deal of courage and/or consulting dollars to approach input of that nature outside of the program.”
During the first session, QuickFacts, a platform dedicated to enhancing operational efficiency for insurance brokers, made a notable pivot in its fundraising strategy. QuickFacts had decided to forgo seeking significant investment to instead opt for a smaller loan. The mentors advised against this and encouraged the venture to stand by their initial fundraising plan. QuickFacts agreed and raised an impressive $1.3 million in a funding round, with 70% of the capital coming from CDL mentors and their VC firms, including Sandpiper Ventures who led the round. Sandpiper Ventures’ investment in QuickFacts marks the eleventh successful venture in their portfolio.
Zen Energy, a forward-thinking company in the sustainable energy sector, entered our program with a primary focus of scaling their e-bikes sales. However, through their discussions with the CDLAtlantic mentors, they quickly recognized the potential applications of their battery technology in various industries and as a result, they pivoted their attention towards these new markets. They expanded their scope to include battery solutions for two and three-wheeled vehicles operating in hot climates. By leveraging the mentors’ expertise, Zen Energy developed battery systems that improve the performance and range of these vehicles, which addresses the unique challenges of these extreme weather conditions. This strategic shift has allowed Zen Energy to move towards becoming a leader in battery technology while expanding their offering of sustainable and efficient energy solutions.
“The single thing I find the most helpful is being held accountable to someone (the mentors) for completing milestones and deliverables. I perform best when I am accountable to others in a 360-degree manner, and CDL is an effective proxy for a Board of Directors. There is no wiggle room for failure… and I LOVE that!”

The Business Development Bank of Canada led a $10 million fundraising round for Graphite Innovation & Technologies, a Halifax-based firm that manufactures eco-friendly maritime coatings. The investment will be used to raise manufacturing of its antifouling marine coatings to one million liters per year, relocate to a larger facility in the Halifax area, and expand into other international markets. The company aims to minimize carbon emissions from the shipping industry by making its technology available to every vessel.
“Graphite Innovation & Technologies’ strategic vision is for every vessel in the world to use its technology. In addition to this latest round of venture capital funding, the company and Invest Nova Scotia have focused
on conducting market research and recently getting into trade markets in Europe, Singapore, and the Middle East” said Peter MacAskill, Invest Nova Scotia President and CEO.
Fredericton-based agtech startup, Picketa Systems, has successfully raised $1.4 million in a seed round to advance its plant tissue analysis technology. The funding round included notable investors specializing in the agricultural sector such as Tall Grass Ventures, Emmertech, Koan Capital, Desjardins Group, East Valley Ventures, and Startup TNT. Picketa Systems intends to deploy 10 units of its technology across Canada
and the United Kingdom. Their innovative solution enables real-time plant tissue analysis, offering agronomists and agricultural professionals the ability to integrate this data seamlessly into their workflows. By eliminating the need for a third-party laboratory, Picketa’s platform reduces costs and time associated with traditional manual plant tissue testing. This application of precision agriculture aligns with the goal of reducing greenhousegas emissions, contributing to sustainable farming practices. The growing demand for agricultural testing technologies, driven by the need to maximize food production, is projected to result in a market valuation exceeding $1.26 billion USD by 2032.
