trong women have always been more fascinating to me than those valued solely for their looks—women who get in the driver’s seat and take control.

Strength doesn’t always equate to bossy. You can get what you want out of life being kind, honest and not running people over. In this, our special spring

fashion issue, we profile wonderful women who possess fortitude in all they do. Just witness their careers, their personal lives and their individual style.

Cover girl and Bay Area native, Christy Turlington Burns has power in spades. In addition

to a beauty that emanates from within, her intelligence and compassion for helping women around the globe access health care during pregnancy speaks volumes, while her marriage to actor/filmmaker Ed Burns and their two beautiful children is testament to her devotion to family. We were thrilled to put the ultimate C woman on our cover and present one of the original Supermodels in spring’s crisp, clean silhouettes. Speaking of clothes, our fashion portfolio dives right into the new season as we sail the high seas off the coast of Laguna Beach.

And nothing says strength like a woman who can man her own ship!

We also spotlight Hollywood newcomer Brit Marling. Already a Sundance darling, she has written, produced, directed and starred in critically acclaimed indie films and now transitions to big-budget dramas. We asked her to star in our glam fantasy shoot at the Descanso Gardens.

We can’t take our eyes off of her ethereal elegance, and neither can the rest of Tinseltown. Take note of her as she has big things ahead…

When I heard fashion’s It girl, Isabel Marant, was going to open a west coast flagship, my heart skipped a beat. Her designs are lust-worthy and uber-cool. That her store (and its location on Melrose Place) lives up to my dreams is even more exciting! We interview this in-demand designer on all things au courant.

But, fashion doesn’t have to stop at your closet. Just ask Estee Stanley. For years this top stylist has dressed Hollywood’s A-list (and still does), and she now also focuses her efforts on interiors. While she was designing spaces for her clients, and products with business partner Justin Timberlake for HomeMint, she also transformed her family’s residence into a setting that is as chic as it gets.

I

think I was always a full-time artist,” says former interior designer Kathy Taslitz. “I just didn’t call myself that.” Today, the Chicago native constructs her work—sculpture that takes a cue from the natural world—in a light-filled studio next to a metal foundry in downtown L.A. Using the ancient “lost wax” method, Taslitz crafts latticework leaves in bronze, and faces that appear composed of flora and fauna in polished silver.

She’s delving into a new medium, too: fiberglass. Collectors—including Monique Lhuillier, Domenico and Eleanore De Sole, and the Saudi Royal Family—can visit her studio for the first time this month to see finished pieces and works in progress which incorporate projected images and sounds recorded from Taslitz’s “field work” outdoors.

rotic women (you can practically smell their perfume) and brash upper-crust men, zoo animals and the deformed are common protagonists in a Garry Winogrand photo. The characters may be caught in an unflattering moment, mid-step or stealing a kiss, but Winogrand’s work does not judge. From the ’50s to the ’80s, the Bronx-born artist captured New York and the West, showing simmering uncertainty below the surface of a barely placid world.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art delves into Winogrand’s oeuvre this month with his first retrospective in 25 years.

Half of the work in the exhibition has yet to be seen. When Winogrand died at age 56, in 1984, he left behind more than 6,500 rolls of film and countless contact sheets. Guest curator Leo Rubinfien, SFMOMA’s Erin O’Toole, and the National Gallery of Art’s Sarah Greenough sifted through the trove to find images that perpetuate the crusty, Yeats-worthy myth of Winogrand: art “which does not teach, which does not cry out, which does not condescend, which does not explain.” “Garry Winogrand,” Mar. 9; sfmoma.org. •

recalls of a photograph she took in Uganda while settling in for hair and makeup at this issue’s cover shoot. “The baby she was carrying was a month old. A little while later, I saw the mother of the baby hauling a heavy, heavy bundle of wood and realized that the girl was her childcare. For many moms in the world, life doesn’t change when you have a child.”

At this moment, her face—one of the most famous in fashion history—looks similar to the visage in other photos taken on her November visit to Uganda: bare and breathtaking, lit up and thoughtful. The 44-year-old supermodel and East Bay native was in the East African country with her organization, Every Mother Counts (EMC), to track the progress of their grant program with Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Uganda—providing transportation vouchers so women can access health services throughout their pregnancies. Without which, they might die from complications that in many cases are easily avoided under the right care.

As the stylist’s hair dryer whirs and the makeup artist defines Turlington Burns’ eyes, one is suddenly reminded that this is one of the original “Supers,” along with Kate, Naomi, Cindy and Linda. Since the late ’80s, she has appeared on countless magazine covers and starred in myriad ad campaigns.

She’s married to the handsome filmmaker Ed Burns (the two wed at S.F.’s Saints Peter and Paul Church in 2003, when she was pregnant with daughter Grace; son Finn was born in 2006) and counts Gwyneth Paltrow and Bono as friends. So, how did she end up on a mission to save mothers around the world?

Personal experience is perhaps the greatest motivator of all.

Immediately following the birth of her first child, Turlington Burns had postpartum hemorrhaging. She and her daughter were fine, but she learned that hundreds of thousands of mothers are not. “It’s the biggest cause of maternal mortality in the world,” she says. To raise awareness, she made a documentary, No Woman, No Cry. The film, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2010, followed pregnant women and their caregivers in rural Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guatemala and in the States as they access critical maternity care. That same year, she also enrolled in Columbia University’s school of public health and started EMC. Turlington Burns is still in contact with most of the subjects of her eye-opening project. “I’m so much more comfortable being in rural parts of countries and with indigenous women than I am with women in my profession,” she reveals. “I have so much more respect. I mean, they’re the hardest working people.”

It begs the question, then, how this women’s health advocate, whom you’ll still find staring back at you from the pages

of Paris Vogue, and Maybelline and Roberto Coin ads, can reconcile visiting a midwife training center in post-earthquake Haiti one day and being on a glamorous shoot the next. “I feel like I’ve always gone back and forth between realms, actually,” says Turlington Burns. As a child, she saw poverty during visits to her mother’s native El Salvador, and as a teen, she went back and forth between high school in Danville and Steven Meisel shoots in both Europe and New York. Her father, a training captain for Pan Am, died of lung cancer, leading to her involvement with the anti-smoking campaign (she shot a PSA and testified at Senate hearings).

Her background explains why she now makes headlines for her humanitarian work, as opposed to the things, ahem, for which some of her fellow Supers are known. Not that she would ever point that out herself. I bring up the dig Kate Moss made in the November issue of Vanity Fair: “The last time I saw Christy, she was wearing a twinset. You can think twinset, but you can’t wear one.”

“Oh it’s hilarious!” Turlington Burns says with a huge grin.

“She’s one of the funniest people I know! I’ve never been a cutting-edge fashion person. I’m much more of a twinset type.

Always was!” These days, if she has to attend an event, she wears designs by Calvin Klein (remember her Eternity campaigns and underwear ads?) or Stella McCartney. “Simple and timeless,” she says. “I have so much overload. Fashion isn’t so fun for me anymore. It hasn’t been for a long time. I don’t need to have the latest anything.” Her travel carry-on? A diaper bag from the collection she’s collaborated on with Ergobaby (makers of the popular infant carrier—see page 200) to benefit EMC. She’s not even sure who made the chic knit pullover she has on today.

As she steps on set, Turlington Burns says she enjoys spending time with her sisters and their families (sister Kelly is married to Ed Burns’ brother Brian) at the Lake Tahoe house her father built. She spills a little about another documentary separate from the subject of women’s health. “It’s a characterdriven piece. I’m nervous about people not being around, so I’ve started interviewing them,” she explains. Then it’s onto Haiti and Zambia. “It sometimes takes a generation to see change. I just want to make an impact.” •

“What I really appreciate in Los Angeles, compared to New York, is the lifestyle, with great weather and great nature,” says Marant. She also appreciates local designers like James Perse and Raquel Allegra, particularly for their t-shirts. “I’ve always been very inspired by American sportswear apparel, and I love shopping for this kind of clothing in L.A.” One thing she doesn’t love about L.A. is the fame-obsessed culture. “I’m very happy and proud to have all those celebrities wearing my clothes, but I must say that I’m not really into this battle,” says Marant, who lives in Paris with her husband, bag designer Jérôme Dreyfuss, and their son, Tal. “I’m designing clothes for all kinds of women,” she adds.

Marant was born in Paris to a German mother (a model and a director of the Elite agency) and French father. They were big travelers, and childhood trips to Africa, Asia, India and the Caribbean influenced her overall look so much that The New York Times described it as “trekking in Tibet via the Bastille.”

most fashion designers delight in the fanfare around L.A. store openings, trotting out celebrities bedecked in the current collection for an endless stream of shopping events masquerading as parties. Not Isabel Marant. The French fashion designer is such a class act that she quietly set up shop on Melrose Place, in early January, with nary a peep. Of course, that only makes admirers of her jet-set, bohemian look want more.

Designed by Franklin Azzi, the former antiques store has been remodeled with a groovy cactus garden courtyard, a neutral wood-paneled interior, floor-to-ceiling windows and several skylights. “He shares my love for American Modernism,” Marant, 45, says of the Parisian architect, a frequent collaborator. (French artist Arnold Goron also contributed a series of whimsical, tiny animal sculptures on metal perches.) Marant’s only other U.S. store is a three-year-old location in New York.

“The opening of the New York shop has been great training for us,” says Marant, who premiered her first Paris boutique in 1998 and plans to open another in London this fall.

“Isabel Marant is the go-to for cool, effortless designs,” says Hollywood style icon Kate Bosworth, who, along with Blake Lively, Alexa Chung, Rachel Weisz and Katie Holmes, is frequently photographed wearing the 19-year-old label. “I could not be more thrilled about her new store in Los Angeles,” she adds.

Bosworth is hardly the only tastemaker shopping the bright and airy, 1,335-square-foot boutique where hours are posted outside in both French and English. Locals like jewelry designer Irene Neuwirth have made it a regular haunt.

A green cactus garden “Isabel Marant is just going to greets visitors at the heighten style and fashion here,” Melrose Place hideaway. says Neuwirth. “This is a town that has always been glamorous but not always chic, and she is going to make everyone dress better.”

The feeling is mutual: Marant became enamored with the city three years ago after the 2010 volcanic eruptions in Iceland delayed her New York-to-Paris return flight, and she jetted west for a sunny respite. Since then, she has visited L.A. two additional times. Last summer, she fell in love with Big Sur as she drove the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles. One day, she says, she’d love a house in L.A. designed by Richard Neutra, one of her favorite architects.

in her suburban neighborhood by asking her father for a sewing machine in order to rework old army jackets into unconventional pieces. She studied design at Studio Berçot fashion school. A crush on Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren inspired her to craft clothes from dishcloths—later replaced by sumptuous, pricey textiles as her fabric of choice.

or Estee Stanley, the accomplished Hollywood stylist-turned-interior designer, a faded, well-worn antique rug is not that different from a Giambattista Valli dress or a “sicko” piece of exquisite jewelry chosen for a client’s step-and-repeat.

“To me, it’s the most important item. It’s the foundation, and then you add layers,” she says, while perched on her son Teddy’s bed. The tiny, three-sided former crib is among the few indications a small child inhabits this bedroom. The bleached wood floors, the Moroccan tile in the bathroom, vintage light fixtures, the bone-colored silk drapes and the cluster of framed black-and-white photos and prints on the walls might signal otherwise.

“I love for there to be a flow, for an entire space to feel fluid, not a different kind of curtain in every room,” she explains, acknowledging that most two-year-old girls don’t have a linen Brenda Antin sofa to cuddle on at story time like daughter Flora has down the hall.

That is not to say the Los Angeles home Stanley shares with her husband, filmmaker Bryan Furst, and one very large sheep dog named Scout, is stuffy. Quite the opposite. For all of its finer touches—bathrooms outfitted in rare marble, pale linen upholstery on the many sofas, a circular table covered in jade inherited from her grandmother (a Newport Beach doyenne who Stanley describes as “dope”), delicate antlers resting on an antique Indian settee—Stanley has designed her own residence, and those of her interior clients like Amanda Peet and Claire Forlani, for living.

There isn’t a single corner that doesn’t have the potential to lure someone in with a Brahms Mount blanket and a good book.

“In most of the homes I go into, only two of the rooms are used,” she says in her typical straight-shooting candor. “It’s such a bummer when people feel they can’t use their whole house.”

For nearly 20 years, Stanley has earned her stripes dressing some of the world’s most fashionable actors. The collection of “awesome chicks” includes Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Lea Michele, Penelope Cruz and Jessica Biel, with whom she is so close that she planned Biel’s Italian wedding to Justin Timberlake—not just picking the dress but staging the whole event. Timberlake also happens to be her business partner in the online home accents site HomeMint (homemint.com).

In most of the homes I go into, only two of the rooms are used. It’s such a bummer when people feel they can’t use their whole house. artists, Matteo linens, soy wax candles and exotic tabletop items for the site’s members. They encourage people to treat their home like they do their wardrobe, swapping out accessories for an instant reboot.

Stanley is a woman who knows how to put a modern spin on classic silhouettes with just the right statement—whether it’s an earring or a bold piece of irreverent art hung in an otherwise simple room. But the real secret to her success might be a primary focus on comfort. One of the objectives of HomeMint is to try to help people live easily with luxury and to treat interior design like they do their personal style, letting it evolve and change over time. She’s also lending her expertise to a new project from WhoWhatWear as an editor of Domaine (domainehome.com), and has started a kids fashion blog, Ladys & Gents (ladysandgents.com), with friend and fashion designer Jenni Kayne.

“I’m trying to make design feel not so precious,” she says.

Convincing her clients (currently, she has eight houses in the works) that old and imperfect things give character is a different challenge. “The smart ones just let me come in and do what I’m supposed to do, no questions asked.” •

The vintage mounted light fixture once illuminated a dentist’s office. The ottoman was made from a kilim rug, and the distressed leather chairs were found at a vintage store in the Hamptons.

The gang’s all here: Paul Whitney, James Galanos, Rudi Gernreich, Gustave Tassell and Bill Pearson show off vanguard looks of the 1950s. The resurgence of luxury and haute couture that had been suppressed during WWII was whole-heartedly embraced by Hollywood—Galanos, in particular, rivaled the best Parisian dressmakers. Even so, in the 1960s and ’70s, the opera gloves came off and ready-to-wear was in. So, what would these predecessors say now to the likes of Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Hedi Slimane, Juan Carlos Obando and Monique Lhuillier? Perhaps: It’s time to get dressed up again!
