t is a strange thing to be in the center of a media storm. Personally, I have never experienced one quite like this. Back in late June, with our September Fashion Issue fast approaching, I was thrown into the whirlwind a bit; watching it from my vantage point changed my perspective on the whole scenario. Last spring, we discussed who would be right for the 7th-anniversary book, and Katie Holmes immediately came to mind. Besides being gorgeous and always chic, the star has created a line with partner/stylist Jeanne Yang (Holmes & Yang) that’s making its mark on the scene— consistently cool, yet wearable and even classic. We like where the label is going…and to pair Katie (and her sartorial endeavors) with our cover felt like an ideal fit. Having seen the actress over the years at various events in Los Angeles and Paris, she has always been so friendly and warm. I was excited to spend a day with her on set, creating beautiful images together with the lovely and talented photographer Matt Jones. She was extremely punctual and arrived at the studio in the morning with Suri in tow (as the mother of a 3-year-old, I can say that’s a feat in itself!). We had fun going through the clothing options with Jeanne and looking at all of the beautiful Holmes & Yang pieces for the shoot. The process couldn’t have been more smooth; in fact, with seven years of C covers behind me, it was actually one of our most mellow and happy. Since it has happened previously with some celebs who shall remain nameless, I was prepared for the possibility of a large entourage—people shoo-ing our team away from Katie, saying not to speak to her unless spoken to. Quite the opposite. Instead, Katie and I enjoyed reminiscing about growing up in Ohio and Michigan, respectively, and summers on the Great Lakes. When Suri asked if she could buy me a chocolate milk for my baby—I was six months pregnant at the time with my second daughter—I was touched. Katie was laughing and dancing. Suri sketched dresses and diligently reported back on what her mom was trying on in the fashion closet. With a big hug and a thank you for bringing together such a wonderful crew, Katie left the building but not before gifting the team with dozens of cupcakes. I remember thinking on my way out onto the New York sidewalk below the studio that it was a special day—one that wouldn’t be forgotten. Then the news hit! Katie had filed for divorce six days after the shoot (and the day after our interview). I was shocked! Katie was in such wonderful spirits…there was a happiness, calm, even a peacefulness in her demeanor. I assume whatever tough, internal decisions she was wrestling with had been handled some time before our day in the studio. As you will see in the portfolio, she is, as always, a picture of elegance and grace. And, because this is our issue dedicated to fashion’s most spectacular season, we present portfolios and news of designer clothes that carry on the spirit of elegance and grace. The most ladylike looks this autumn are pitch-perfect for all environs—from San Francisco’s opulent streets to the country town of Diablo, where we visit with supermodel Maggie Rizer Mehran. So, get ready for our biggest issue ever, packed with one fresh choice after the next! We are thrilled to have spent the past SEVEN years celebrating California and its unmatched style! Indeed, there’s no seven-year itch for us—we can’t wait

Jennifer Hale Founder & editorial Director

to be here for the next seven…and beyond. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

“I love C Magazine’s constant and excellent coverage of all things beautiful in California.” how much I enjoyed Elizabeth Khuri Chandler’s March article on the Jean Paul Gaultier retrospective at the de Young in San Francisco [C Culture, “Aesthetic of Paradox,” March 2012, p.145]. It also reminded me how much I love C Magazine’s constant and excellent coverage of all things beautiful in California. C what’s hot man of the House From his adopted Los Angeles, Hedi Slimane makes a bold return to the fashion world

Y.R.

a

fter leaving Dior Homme in 2007 at what most critics agreed to be the height of his career, Hedi Slimane relocated to California and reinvented himself as a photographer. He recently told The New York Times: “I discovered Los Angeles in the late ’90s. The city was not at its best at the time, but I fell for it right away. There is something almost haunted about it, a vibrant mythology I find rather inspiring.” His appointment as the creative director at Yves Saint Laurent last spring answered the prayers of faithful sartorialists worldwide, and this month, Slimane makes his long-awaited return to Paris Fashion Week. The house has already seen big changes from the 44-year-old designer. Namely, he has opted to stay and do the bulk of his work in L.A. instead of moving to France, and he dropped “Yves” for “Saint Laurent Paris” ready-to-wear. Surprising? Always. But don’t expect the YSL headquarters to pick up for Beverly Hills…just yet. ysl.com. •

s Jessica Chastain announced Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen the CFDA Womenswear Designers of the Year this past summer, the twins excitedly hugged their muse, Lauren Hutton, and, then on stage, adoringly thanked each other. The coveted award, which now resides in The Row’s New York office, reminds them daily of how far they’ve come—from aspiring to make the perfect T-shirt in 2006 to a full-fledged line that beat out this year’s veteran nominees (Marc Jacobs and the Proenza Schouler duo). “We plan to grow organically as we have from day one,” says Ashley. Inspired by the beauty of a strong woman, Mary-Kate explains, “The fall collection incorporates classic menswear details in a feminine way.” It’s a familiar study in clean, monochromatic silhouettes with mink adornment here, alligator trim there, and billowing yards of fine cashmere and silk. Having grown up in Sherman Oaks, the twins, now 26, visit their hometown frequently. Here, their ultimate fall to-do list around L.A.: UÊ JUST ONE EYE We love the concept—equal

wanted to give women clothes that they would feel comfortable in, that they could drive in but that, at the same time, would emphasize their femininity,” Gabrielle Chanel once said. This fall, the French house pays tribute to its classic coat with the release of Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld’s The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited, a compilation of more than 100 black-and-white shots depicting the timeless piece on actresses, models, writers and artists. It began with Gabrielle Chanel’s 1916 suit design for the active woman. Coco spared no details in its

construction, from ergonomically correct sleeves to a brass chain neatly concealed in the lining which allowed the jaquette to hang with proper weight. Today, designer and Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld remains true to her original creation. He breathes new life into the garment season after season—slimming the silhouette, utilizing new materials like neoprene and faux fur, and styling it over a gown and even a swimsuit. According to Lagerfeld, “Some things never go out of fashion in the world of fashion: jeans, the white shirt and the Chanel jacket.” Steidl, $98. •

Perhaps it’s the mix of her Italian heritage and adopted Parisian life that inuences Gaia Repossi’s elegant, edgy style. The greatgranddaughter of Gian Pietro Repossi, Gaia has been at the design helm of her family’s ďŹ ne jewelry business since 2007. Over time, she has worked with the likes of Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra and Zadig & Voltaire. (Rumor has it she’ll be teaming up with stylist Vanessa Traina in the coming year.) ashion is in her DNA. A third-generation member of the Max Mara famiglia, Maria Giulia Maramotti looks after the brand’s retail development from the New York ofďŹ ce. In other words, she provides the human touch. “For a luxury brand like ours, it’s important to personalize the relationship with the client,â€? she says. While in L.A. for the star-studded Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards, C caught up with the jetsetter (she has called Paris, Australia and London home) at West Hollywood’s Sunset Tower Hotel. “When I joined the family business in 2008, my uncle told me this [would be my] university of retail, and it turned out to be true.â€? During her visits, Maramotti makes sure to stop by her good friend Nina Freudenberger’s Haus Interior shop, Chateau Marmont for dinner, followed by drinks at either The Standard or Hemingway’s. On her next stay, the avid sailor already has plans to visit the San Diego Yacht Club (“It’s extremely relaxing for meâ€?). Her other way to unwind is, of course, to shop! maxmara.com. Hello, Flawless! Marla Malcolm Beck’s everyday care The founder of Bluemercury and new skincare line M-61 prescribes a perfect visage: 1. Do an at-home peel three times a week. As we age, our dead skin cells don’t slough off as easily, causing the skin to appear dull. (Try the M-61 Power Pro-Peel.) 2. In our 13 years of treatment at Bluemercury, we’ve seen Vitamin C as one of the best catalysts for creating glowing complexions— proven to stimulate collagen synthesis and alleviate inflammation. 3. Use SPF daily. Nothing makes skin look older than a sunburn or hyperpigmentation. I use RéVive’s Sensitif Cellular Repair SPF 15 or Darphin’s Vitalprotection Age-Defying Protective Skin Lotion SPF 50 under makeup. 4. Bronzer: I take a big, fat brush, swirl it around in NARS Laguna Bronzer and apply it to my cheeks, eyelids and forehead for a quick, sun-kissed look, and I’m ready to walk out the door. 1624 Redwood Hwy., Corte Madera, 415-924-5400; bluemercury.com. Secrets of a (Not-So-Secret) Plastic Surgeon How s.F.’s Dr. Carolyn Chang stays a cut above the rest BY EMILY HSIEH

Board of Plastic Surgery-certified doctor, who favors designers like Alexander McQueen and Jean Yu during her off-hours, says, “My office is very clean. I like simple lines and tailored clothing. And that minimal aesthetic goes with my surgery, too. “One thing that tends to be forgotten is every plastic surgeon wants their patients to look perfect,” she says. “Sometimes, surgeons lose sight of the natural facial anatomy and overdo things to the point that the patients no longer looks like themselves.” Dr. Chang also cautions against fillers and fat injections that can distort the natural contours of the face: “When you open certain checkout-stand magazines and you see people singled out as having awful surgery, chances are, it was actually too many fillers and injections that gave them that chipmunk look.” To pull off a procedure without close friends or family taking notice, Dr. Chang says less is more: “I do only what the patient needs to give them the result they’re expecting. If they have extra skin on their eyes, I’m going to remove just the skin but not the fat. The fewer procedures, the less scarring.” Operating in stages can also help: “By doing just the eyes and waiting several years before doing a lower face lift, there’s not as much overall change.” Starting early also has its benefits; the shift in appearance isn’t so dramatic. Clever styling tricks can also go a long way in camouflaging a procedure. Post-op, good makeup (Dr. Chang favors mineral-based varieties) will cover any second- or third-week residual redness and bruising. Another tip: “Get new glasses or a different haircut or color just before your surgery,” Dr. Chang suggests. “People won’t be able to tell what’s going on—they won’t know if you’ve simply lost weight or if something else is different.” 2100 Webster St., S.F., 415-923-3070; drcarolynchang.com. •

Flipping through the before-and-after photos in Dr. Chang’s sleekly designed Pacific Heights office reaffirms her core values. “The proof is always in the pictures,” says the Stanfordtrained surgeon, whose portfolio contains no traces of overly taut, shiny, plumped-up countenances. Instead, images show a parade of subtly-yet-distinctly younger and more refreshed faces, though without reading the captions, it’s difficult to put your finger on exactly why or how. First impressions are everything when it comes to choosing the right plastic surgeon. “You’ll get a sense of your doctor as soon as you meet him,” says Dr. Chang, who also serves as the ViceChairman of Plastic Surgery at the California Pacific Medical Center and has been singled out by Vogue as a member of their Vogue 100 (a group of tastemakers from around the country). s this not beautiful?” asks Alexandra Champalimaud. The interior designer stands in lighting boutique Rewire (4370 Melrose Ave., L.A., 323-664-5254; rewirela.com), and her attention has turned to an amber-hued Livio Seguso lamp. “It would be very elegant in the Hotel Bel-Air.” She would know; in addition to revamping the iconic property, she has been charged with other high-status hospitality projects such as S.F.’s Fairmont Hotel, The Carlyle and The Pierre in N.Y. While recently in L.A., the Lisbon-born, New York-based decorator took C on a tour as she got to know the city’s design sources: At Blackman Cruz (836 N. Highland Ave., L.A., 323-466-8600; blackmancruz.com), where Champalimaud goes “for very strong pieces,” she zeroes in on an aqua linen sofa with embroidery by London company Clarke & Reilly. “I’d use it in a living room or a bar, next to a white leather chair, for contrast. It’s both physically and philosophically beautiful,” she says, referring to its eco-friendly nature (its creators re-imagine antiques). “Reasonable, interesting things that are good investments” is how she describes Lendrum Fine Art (717 N. Highland Ave., Ste. 5, L.A., 323-933-5550; lendrumfineart.com), where she admires works by Tyler Vlahovich, Sean Odell and Midori Kono Thiel. A pair of 1953 leather occasional chairs by Mid-Century Modern Danish designer Poul Kjaerholm catches Champalimaud’s eye at Galerie Half (6911 Melrose Ave., L.A., 323-424-3866; galeriehalf.com), as does a 1957 Hans Wegner Halyard rope chair—great for Charym, a wellness center she founded in Litchfield, CT. Finally, Champalimaud stops by Harbinger (752 N. La Cienega Blvd., West Hollywood, 310-858-6884; harbingerla.com), a stockist of her new Comptoirs line for Holland & Sherry. She and showroom co-owner Parrish Chilcoat examine previous seasons of embroidered fabrics for the company by French designer Nicolas Chambeyron. “You know he used to do couture,” she says. “He was at Dior. This is beautiful enough to be the bodice of a dress,” says Champalimaud, ever imaginative. champalimaud design.com°ÊU

only invite guests who will be amusing and are up for meeting new people,” says Kathryn Ireland of her party protocol. That would explain, then, the lively and diverse crowd—Simon Baker, Lindsay Lohan, Martyn LawrenceBullard, Priscilla Woolworth and David Mamet, to name a few—at a soiree hosted by Ireland at her Santa Monica home. Aside from celebrating WestWeek, SoCal’s most prominent design industry event, the occasion toasted the U.S. launch of Aga’s new Total Control cooker (aga-ranges.com). A candycolored model had been installed in the interior and textile designer’s kitchen, and Aga’s chefs worked their magic to make perfect pizza margherita and lamb skewers. Guests strolled Ireland’s candle-lit garden to tunes chosen by her friend, composer Magnus Fiennes, and they chatted by the fire in her cozy living room. LABOR DAY ON LOCATION RICE’S BEACH PICNIC MADE EASY Wrap ciabatta sandwiches in parchment paper: Fra’mani Little Ham with raclette cheese, grainy mustard and cornichon. • For vegetarians, try arugula pesto, bellwether Farms ricotta, a handful of arugula for crunch and sliced tomatoes sprinkled with sea salt. • bake a fresh batch of peanut-butter cookies. seal them in a mason jar so they don’t get smashed in transit. • pre-chill a lightbodied French wine like beaujolais Cru. It’ll be at ideal temperature by the time you arrive. • pack late-summer santa rosa plums as snacks. Use the bag to collect trash—keep the beaches clean!

e

namored with the cherry guava-dotted shrubs on one side of her resplendent acreage, Valerie Rice loads them into her apron. “I always head straight to the kitchen to whip up sorbets and sauces, cobblers and jams, even syrup for cocktails,” she says of the fleeting autumn fruit deemed “quintessential Santa Barbara.” That phrase could also describe this California native. The blonde from Newport Beach has never lost the precocious awe she discovered during childhood visits to her grandmother’s in Wespelaar, Belgium, where she played in the garden and learned to preserve currants. Given this background, narrowing the proximity from dirt to dish has little to do with trend. In 2009, she began a chronicle of her entertaining tips and recipes. The Eat Drink Garden with Valerie Rice blog details the progress of her growing ideas: Sunday suppers, wine pairings, cocktail creations and decidedly un-boring family dinners—demystifying Moroccan tagines, swiss-chard chips and pozole stew along the way. Though she invites luminaries for “Chefs in my Kitchen” such as Donald Link, Elizabeth Colling and Roberto Cortez, she’s self-taught, and that’s precisely the point: “I pride myself on being a home cook and not a master gardener. It’s not rocket science if you just stick with what’s in season.” For Rice, creativity is certainly at its peak this fall. “I didn’t want to do tabletop just to do tabletop,” she says of her leap into home fashion. Look for a chic set of three apron styles to debut later this month. Of the wrap apron-dress, chef’s jacket and a “cute and sassy” waist-tie skirt, she says the designs were born out of necessity to find a flattering, non-frumpy, functional piece to wear while entertaining. Most crucial, for the wife and mother of two running from kitchen to garden and back to the kitchen, Rice built in pockets to hold all manner of things—snips of chive, Santa Rosa plums, “pink lemonade” blueberries right off the branch, and what’s left of those heavenly cherry guavas. eat-drink-garden.com. •

gesture to rival the then-shocking closure of Spago Hollywood in 2001, chef Wolfgang Puck announced a shutter of sorts this past spring: On July 8, he would turn off the stoves at his Beverly Hills flagship. And thus began the all-star overhaul. Waldo Fernandez (interior designer behind Soho House West Hollywood and Tavern) set out to re-imagine original partner Barbara Lazaroff’s colorful, ornamental decor with a fresh, organic feel. Tabletop artist Martin Kastner of Crucial Detail (Alinea ranks among its most notable clients) began masterminding custom china. And, yes, transformation would be afoot on the menu. For the duration of summer, the only chance for favorites such as Puck’s childhood Austrian schnitzel have been at Spago satellites in Vegas, Bachelor Gulch, Maui or Palo Alto. This month, power lunchers return to the

olive tree-shaded patio to find a Spago of the future—one relinquishing its most popular dishes. Thirty years in, it’s difficult to imagine a visit without a spicy-tuna cornet. Indeed, the landmark’s signature bill of fare hasn’t changed much since its 1982 beginnings, when beet-and-goat cheese salads, and house-smoked salmon pizzas helped form California’s nascent dining landscape (not to mention the coming of the “celebrity chef”). While his team has kept mum about the brand-new menu, judging from Puck’s track record—from his days as a toque-wearing, mop-headed chef at haute-Hollywood hot spot Ma Maison to last autumn’s launch at Hotel Bel-Air—Spago 2012 is sure to be rife with instant classics defining (at least) the next 30 years. 176 N. he only ways to reach Laucala Island? Hop on a chartered plane or boat. Leave Nadi International Airport (an 11-hour flight from LAX) for the northern tip of the Fijian archipelago’s seven-mile stretch, where you will be whisked in Range Rovers to a private ocean-side or hilltop thatched-roof villa tucked amid herb gardens, starfruit trees, tropical orchids and birds of paradise. The resort occupies a destination so remote, it’s as if you’ve just been transplanted into a scene from The Blue Lagoon, complete with an organic farm, horseback riding along the coast and a dive boat for trips to nearby reefs. First order of business: a 90-minute welcome massage on the outdoor daybed overlooking sugar-white beaches. Each sprawling mahogany-wood suite, with its own pool, sundeck and al fresco shower, provides peaceful post-travel respite. The one-time coconut plantation—now owned by Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who acquired the property from publishing magnate Malcolm Forbes in 2003—has seen its share of celebrity visitors (Elizabeth Taylor, the Rockefellers and Oprah Winfrey, for starters). “They really roll out the red carpet from start to finish here,” says a recent guest. With only 25 villas, “You feel like it’s just you and the staff—like you’re royalty.” A day’s activities might include cycling, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling or a round of 18 holes on the David McLay Kidd-designed golf course, before unwinding with a fresh-squeezed watermelon juice cocktail at the Pool Bar. For dinner, choose from five on-site restaurants that utilize local-grown produce and serve everything from Teppanyaki barbecue to authentic Asian cuisine. Or, for a cozy night in, private dining (a far cry from typical “room service”) includes a meticulous set-up for custom courses such as prawns with melon and rocket, and filet mignon. If you’re bent on some rest and relaxation, head up to the spa for the signature Rebalance Facial or Papaya Body Wrap. To get a closer look at the made-in-house products, technicians teach a soap- and lotionmaking class at the Spa Kitchen. The only drawback? “I can honestly say that no future vacation will ever compare to this.” All-inclusive, from $3,800/day per couple; laucala.com. •

nce a graffiti artist, always a renegade. If you ask Barry McGee what the goal of graffiti is, he’ll tell you that it’s the practice of subversion; it must remain abrasive to qualify. Since the ’80s, his exploration has evolved from the streets of San Francisco’s Mission District into the white cubes of galleries and museums, but the work remains beautifully rough around the edges. >>

McGee and Clare Rojas’ “Leave it Alone/ Together at Last,” 2010.

<< At 45, the notoriously press-shy San Franciscan once known by the tagger name Twist— who has placed his scrawl across freeway underpasses and up the sides of government buildings—has been featured at the 2001 Venice Biennale, fêted in Tokyo and Denmark, and commands admiration worldwide. Lawrence Rinder, UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive director and co-curator of the upcoming exhibition, “Barry McGee,” calls him a current-day Walt Whitman. “He epitomizes the distinctly American tradition of art and literature; he looks at people out in the street and engages with a subject matter that isn’t traditionally associated with art. He captures a democratic spirit.” It’s a rare individual who can appeal to both the street community and the clubby inner circle of the art world. Rinder gets positively giddy when he talks about being the first to amass a largescale show chronicling McGee’s output, especially since the curator thinks he “missed the boat” at BAM/PFA in the ’90s when he overlooked the loose collective of artists called the Mission School. At the time, McGee, his now-deceased wife Margaret Kilgallen, and others were changing history with their scrappy do-it-yourself techniques, interest in the handmade and poignant interpretations of urban life. Using found materials—ballpoint pens, lipstick, house paint—and rejecting the slick ’90s dot-com consumerism, their art disseminated the hope and despair of the city streets in a very approachable way. McGee’s cartoonish blackand-white faces seem to have the life sucked out of them. Kilgallen’s surfers, winsome women and folk lettering reflected a tweaked urban language. Many of McGee’s contributions to the Mission School oeuvre and beyond are addressed in the new show: his famous painted liquor bottles, op-art panels, animatronic taggers, all-encompassing environments and fresh “The male material. I ask Rinder if we can interview figure is kind the low-key artist and he becomes coy: of like an everyman,” “When he’s in the middle of creating McGee has work, he doesn’t do press.” said of his ubiquitous The product of a Chinese mother and Irishmasculine American father, McGee grew up in the frissonfaces. Untitled, filled environment of San Francisco in the late 1997. ’80s and the early ’90s. As the city moiled under protest movements, AIDS activism, a huge homeless population, Reagan-Bush blowback, and experimental performances by pre-Burning Man groups such as the San Francisco Survival Research Laboratories (where machines battled one another to destruction), McGee soaked up a potent atmosphere.

Street Market, 2011.

Initially, McGee’s works hit eBay long before commercial galleries. In 2003, winning bids were $1,500 per bottle. Untitled, 2005.

These disparate motifs echo throughout his work. A strong draftsman with a traditional art school background from the San Francisco Art Institute, McGee’s early street graffiti was often figurative: sad, gloomy faces he claimed were inspired by the city’s transient community—“Things the city is trying to get rid of or trying to hide, or pretending doesn’t exist,” he told Italian art historian and curator Germano Celant in 2002. By the ’90s and after a trip to a church teeming with carved wooden figures in Brazil, McGee began creating more sculptural works such as his now-signature bottle sculptures and hallmark cluster pieces, which were part of a seminal Yerba Buena Center for the Arts show in 1994. These clusters of found objects in vintage frames, hand-scrawled messages, hand-painted signs, and other visual tropes are arranged in thoughtful patterns; lately, the clusters have started to pucker away from the wall, adding three-dimensional impact. In the past, McGee encouraged interaction between thieves and his work. At his solo show at Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum in 2004, 39 bottles were stolen from one of his collection pieces. “But no one figured it out until the end of the show. I thought it was really funny,” he told Art Forum in 2008. “It’s based off of ‘racking,’” notes BAM/PFA co-curator Dena Beard. “In the vandalism community, there’s a point of pride for a graffiti writer to steal paint from the hardware store.” y the late 1990s, Jeffrey Deitch proved himself influential in McGee’s commercial career. After viewing a line of skaters who were queued up around the block to see work by McGee at the Drawing Center (“Wall Drawings,” 1996), the then-impresario behind Deitch Projects was impressed. “I’d been looking for a long time for something fresh that emerged from the streets. He is one of the most innovative artists to come out of street culture since the Wild Style artists that emerged in the mid-’70s,” says the current MOCA director. Everyone told him that McGee would never work with a commercial gallery, but Deitch persisted and flew to St. Louis, where McGee was working. The two spent a day together. “All it needed was a personal approach, rather than letters or phone calls. That’s how he is. He’s very direct.” “Deitch gave Barry a budget, keys to the building [Deitch Projects], access and freedom,” adds Beard. “He could basically get his entire crew into the space.” In 2000, together with graffiti writers Steve Powers (ESPO) and Todd James (REAS), McGee created an all-encompassing landscape of smashed trucks and beat-up vans, CONTINUED ON PAGE 220 complete with wheeling-and-dealing character Robbie

Cruise’s adopted children from his previous marriage to Nicole Kidman, and that Bella, 19, and Connor, 17, are around “a lot.” Do you think having children brought you closer together? “I don’t know. I mean…I don’t know. People have been having babies a long time.” Do you think you’ll have any more children? “I don’t think so because I feel like I want to be there for Suri at every step. So, no.” Or, at least, not with Tom Cruise. Holmes has been with Suri not just at every step, but at seemingly every waking moment. “Today, we went and got bagels at our place and then we went to art class, which I love,” she says. “Hers [paintings] are better than mine. It’s amazing. I love seeing what she creates. It just makes me so happy.” Transportation is always an issue; they’re two people capable of closing down entire city blocks for a visit to FAO Schwarz. “I don’t take the subway. I used to, but it’s a little crazy with, you know, now. I bet a lot of kids take the subway…we’ll get there.” Dreams of an independence day seem to be sincere for the girl from Toledo, Ohio, who still loves The Gap, sewing pillows and claims to make an excellent chicken pot-pie from scratch. That day may still be a long way off, however. This month, Holmes and her business partner/close friend/ stylist, Jeanne Yang, plan to present the fourth season of Holmes & Yang at The Bowery, just a few floors above where we’re seated. The two met on a photo shoot and were reconnected years later through Cruise (Yang has been his stylist for years). “We laughed about the fact that sometimes people don’t do women any favors in terms of the way clothing is made,” says Yang. Their solution, while keeping the cut and design high fashion, was to incorporate stretch, Spanx-like fabric into the lining of certain garments. “I think women want to feel sexy, but they don’t want anyone to know that they’re trying,” says Holmes, adding, “A lot of women in high-profile jobs want to look as powerful as they are, and they want it to be effortless.” They’ve made steady progress between bicoastal offices, keeping the collection hand-crafted in N.Y.’s garment district with the sweaters now constructed in L.A. Some pieces this season may look familiar: The sheer-sleeved navy dress Holmes wore to the Mission: Impossible III premiere has been reinterpreted as has the ruffled, leather-bodice halter dress she wore on the Tropic Thunder red carpet. The silhouettes are characteristic of the duo. Yang, a self-described classicist, says Holmes brings “fresh, young, interesting twists.” Yang references a six-ply cashmere sweater with stretch silk-crepe backing—the perfect piece for crisp California evenings. “You have the warmth of a Loro Piana and yet you don’t have the thickness of a big sweater.” The project seems to be both CONTINUED ON PAGE 220

he suggests we meet at Gemma, the coolly hip trattoria below The Bowery Hotel in the East Village. Known for its well-dressed clientele as much as its mindnumbing wait times, the spot’s not exactly a neighborhood hole-in-the-wall to have a quiet chat about life. Yet, on this scorching weekday mid-July afternoon, it’s empty. No sooner than a black SUV quietly pulls up to the curb is Katie Holmes delivered inside. As she swiftly makes her way through the room, head down, sunglasses on, I’m reminded why she was cast to play Jackie O in last year’s mini-series The Kennedys. Today, the 33-year-old star towers almost six feet tall in heels, with a thick, beautiful dark-brown mane that trails halfway down her back. She tells me she has just returned from one of her many recent trips to Iceland to visit her husband at the time, Tom Cruise, 50, who was on location filming Oblivion. Yes, she explains, they see each other often and that she’s “very happy,” but talking about her relationship, I soon realize, is not at the top of her list. In between questions about Cruise, she is her girlish, exuberant self, launching into tangents about other aspects of life: travel, paparazzi, dinner parties and, of course, her favorite subject, her now 6-year-old daughter, Suri. Holmes is captivating, unpretentious and instantly likeable, falling into helpless bouts of giggling (possibly exacerbated by a “very strong” cup of coffee, into which she pours no fewer than four sugars). While she may not have been bragging about her five-year marriage, it certainly didn’t seem as if she was standing at the edge of a precipice, either. But, back in L.A. the following morning, there it was: a paparazzi photo of Holmes leaving our interview under the headline: Enough! Katie Finally Breaks Free! The rumors were confirmed, and follow-up requests for a statement were met with a cryptic “no comment” while rags started churning out everything from reports that Cruise was planning to send Suri to Sea Org (the Scientology bootcamp in the middle of the Pacific) to allegations that their marriage contract had simply expired. Twelve days after filing, the couple settled the terms in a true Hollywood-style quickie divorce. Going back over the tapes, there were signs: Holmes was certainly very aware of herself, laying a couple cards on the table but never showing her whole hand. Most noticeably, the one name decisively absent from her lexicon: Tom Cruise. She never actually refers to him by name over pages and pages of transcription. The proverbial “we” refers to Holmes’ real life-partner Suri. She reminds me that she’s also a mother to

C lassic with mojo,” is one way Kendall Conrad describes her style. With two stores in Los Angeles and a client list that includes some of the coolest women around, the accessories designer has carved out a niche for herself as a champion of easy, sexy elegance. It’s an aesthetic evident in the Montecito home she shares with her husband, director and photographer David Cameron (also CEO and creative director of Kendall Conrad Design), and their daughters Luisa, 14, and Fernanda, 12. “I was eight months pregnant with our first daughter when we found the place,” Conrad explains. It was love at first sight. The 1.5-acre creekside property, lush with sycamore and fruit trees, provided an exit plan out of Los Angeles. “My first thought,” she recalls, “was that this was where I wanted our children to grow up.” The 1940s-era, Mediterranean-style home and garden is just two minutes from the beach and down the street from a pool and tennis club for the girls. The abode had everything they wanted save for a bit more room, so plans for expansion quickly commenced to add a library, two bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs, and a guest suite downstairs—all in the same manner as the original dwelling. A separate cottage down by the creek would eventually become Conrad’s creative studio. The clean, open spaces are now a study in serene minimalism with muted tones and hand-stained terra cotta flooring. This neutral palette, however, receives bursts of energy with pops of color and texture: flowers from the garden, tribal rugs, stacks of books, and art, much of which is created by friends and family, including sculptor Charles Fine

and painters David Florimbi and her sister Cayetana Conrad. The overall effect is a personalized, clutter-free haven with cozy nooks, never forfeiting richness and not overly precious. “Kendall doesn’t have a love of acquiring things,” Cameron explains. “Things are to be used, and if something ages and acquires a patina, so much the better.” Conrad’s workspace maintains this air with two desks, a long table, an oversized chair to sit in when she’s sketching on her iPad, and an inspiration board to help organize thoughts while she designs future collections. Her exquisite and very functional leather bags are equally unfussy and free of any logos. When asked if her bags are meant to be something handed down from mother to daughter, Conrad is quick to add, “and granddaughter.” In this household, family matters. As the daughter of artist-author Barnaby Conrad, she spent her formative years learning a sophisticated, yet bohemian approach to life. Perhaps Conrad’s biggest influence is the Santa Barbara coastline. There’s a calm optimism about the way she lives and works that might have something to do with all those summer afternoons growing up on Rincon Point. “We are beach dwellers at heart,” Conrad admits, which goes a long way toward explaining the light, breezy quality and spirit that permeates her home. Anyone who has been to a party at the Conrad/Cameron domicile can attest to the truth of this statement, especially during warmer months. Dinner parties usually mean al fresco dining, Conrad’s favorite style of entertaining. The table will be set down by the creek, under the giant sycamores. The fireplace and firepots will be going, and there will be plenty of votive candles on the table and torches along the paths. “I was taught that life is short and meant to be enjoyed. Do what you love, work hard, play hard,” she says. Listening to her stories of a childhood surrounded by people who valued conversation, ideas, opinions, food, music and fun, the message is clear: A house is meant to facilitate a life—not be the star of the show. •

t’s my first time with a microphone,” says Sarah Burton as she nervously grips the device. Alexander McQueen’s creative director is in San Francisco for four days to receive an honorary doctorate from the prestigious Academy of Art University. It is also her first time in California. A morning panel discussion, in front of 700 people gathered in the school’s auditorium, featured Burton and Simon Ungless, the director of the Academy’s School of Fashion. Ungless and Burton first met, years ago, when he was a fashion teacher at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. He was the man who changed her life in 1996. “Lee [Alexander McQueen’s first name] was looking for a student intern—someone reliable—and I proposed Sarah because she was the most hard-working and talented student in my class,” explains Ungless. “Sarah stood out because she was focused and selfless. She’s a very gentle soul with a calm temperament. She had no ego.” According to Ungless, fellow classmates were so desperate for an internship with McQueen that they would stalk the designer and Ungless at London nightclubs. Burton responds, “I knew everyone wanted to work with Lee, so I was always so surprised that Simon chose me. I was quite shy. I still am, and I wasn’t the coolest.” The soft-spoken Burton, 38, is a classic English rose from Manchester with dewy skin, flaxen hair and blue eyes. For 14 years, she was at McQueen’s side in his design studio. After his unexpected suicide in February, 2010, Burton—having already been named head of womenswear in 2000 and acting as his right hand up until his death—was appointed that May as creative director for all lines and accessories (including the best-selling skull-pattered scarves and iconic Knuckle Box clutch). Each season, Burton telegraphs her respect for the house’s founder with references to archival favorites while keeping her focus firmly on fresh ideas. “Everything I know, I owe to Alexander McQueen,” she says humbly. “Lee could do anything with flair—develop new fabrics, work on shoes, make a dress from shells, reinvent silhouettes, create intricate patterns. It was so inspiring.” McQueen’s beauty came with a dark, provocative side—low-cut “bumster” pants, a collection entitled “Highland Rape,” blood-splattered models and gleefully leather-bound overtures. Burton, on the other hand, leans toward a softer aesthetic. This fall, she says, “Lee’s voice was in my head saying to push further. So we decided to look at these blown-up, extreme proportions without making them heavy. I wanted the clothes to breathe, to feel like they were pulsating. It was about volume with lightness and movement.” One stand-out piece, an artfully undulating cloud of pink feathers, was not, in fact, crafted of feathers at all: “We cut hundreds of meters of organza into points. In the end, it took 50 people four days to finish,” she says of the scramble before the Paris show. “I had no idea how long it was going to take.” The ultra-feminine, surreal and trendsetting designs place

I knew everyone wanted to work with Lee, so I was always so surprised that Simon chose me. I was quite shy. I still am, and I wasn’t the coolest.

Burton among the most technically savvy designers working today— a trait equally as admired in her predecessor. She finds inspiration everywhere. “It could be something while walking down the street: a poster, a piece of litter, something on telly, a book, an image.” The dramatic runway looks are, in turn, meant to re-inspire. “There is the criticism that the show should be more commercial, and probably there should have been more in the fall season, but it’s almost because there is so much stuff out there that you want to make something on the catwalk that is precious, that creates a world, and that’s a dream in a way.” And, of course, there’s the task of reinterpreting that vision into a viable collection “that’s not just an after-thought—that’s just as beautiful.” One royal challenge: the plum assignment of designing Kate Middleton’s wedding gown, which Burton kept totally mum, even from her own mother. It was only at the moment that Middleton emerged from her carriage that reporters revealed the long-running mystery of who designed the dress. Burton’s star ascended. As the ultimate accolade, this past June, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed Burton an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for her “services to fashion.” As evidenced by her smart Wimbledon attire, the Duchess of Cambridge continues to rely on Burton’s impeccable taste. “Sarah is very respectful of the company’s DNA and the fashion codes, silhouettes and incredible craftsmanship established over 16 years,” adds Ungless. “She totally understands the responsibility she has taken on and really cares about the business. Originally, she was motivated by her own passion, but now she’s responsible for the company’s growth and profits. As well as designing, she is building the business.” During Burton’s California visit, Ungless took his Brit pal on a tour of the dramatic coastal wilds of West Marin. “I wanted her to see the real California before she headed back to London,” he says. The break was well-timed. Fueled by sales nearly doubling over the past year, executives at Alexander McQueen (now owned by Paris-based PPR) recently announced to WWD that they were pursuing a major retail push with new U.S. and Asian outposts designed by Burton and David Collins (a British architect/ designer known for his work with the company and hospitality projects like The Connaught). It’s a major vote of confidence in Burton and her future with the fashion house. For Burton, walks on a remote Bolinas beach might feel like a dream. Since she returned to life with her husband, photographer David Burton, in St. Johns Wood and the hip, loft-like McQueen headquarters in Clerkenwell, Burton presented a sleek and beautifully tailored 2013 resort show in Paris. Highlighted by a silvery, metallic jacquard pant suit à la David Bowie in the 1970s, she explains, “The proportions are extreme: high waists, an elongated leg, a peaked shoulder. There’s a harder, more precise, masculine edge that’s a reaction to the roundness and the sickly-sweet femininity of the last collection.” Just the way McQueen would have liked it. •

itting at an outdoor Union Square cafe in San Francisco with Maggie Rizer Mehran is like basking in a sparkly ray of sunshine. That’s not because this supermodel, who shot to fame in 1997 when photographer Steven Meisel chose the 19-year-old to grace the cover of Vogue Italia, is in catwalk mode or dressed to dazzle. Instead, this laid-back mom arrives pushing a stroller that ferries her cherubic-cheeked toddler, Alexander “Zander” Mehran III. Casually dressed in jeans and a tank top, the 34-year-old is a classic blue-eyed, freckle-faced, all-American beauty. “As a model, I spent so much time wearing other people’s clothes—becoming different characters,” says Rizer Mehran. “I still enjoy dressing up for nights out. But during the day, I’d rather just be me: jeans, T-shirts and a little bit of something.” Though she reveled in the glamorous, globetrotting life, Rizer Mehran exudes the big-hearted warmth of her small-town roots. Born in Staten Island, she and her family moved near the Canadian border to the Great Lakes village of Watertown. However, the structure splintered when her father, Kevin Rizer, announced he was gay and divorced his wife, Maureen Breen, before their daughter’s 2nd birthday. (He lived openly with HIV until his death in 1992 from AIDS.) She was still in high school when the Ford Agency received a packet of photos from Rizer Mehran’s mother and asked her to work with them. She hesitated—she’d been a good student who dreamed of becoming a veterinarian—and worried modeling might be a step down. Soon enough, she was commanding up to $30,000 per shoot, with heights reaching $200,000 daily to star in campaigns for such vaunted designers as Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Prada, Chanel, Anna Sui and Max Mara. In 2003, however, she crashed back to earth after discovering her stepfather, who filled a void in her life as a father-figure and managed her finances, had squandered her multi-million-dollar nest-egg on his gambling addiction. “Photographers always remarked, ‘You’re the good girl, the one who didn’t change,’” she recalls. “My parents weren’t close, and mom struggled to raise our family. I grew up knowing my dad would die. There was never any, ‘When dad’s 80…’ It was always, ‘How much time does he have?’ From a very young age, I realized how fragile life is.” But since her 2010 wedding in Lake Placid, N.Y., to then-31-year-old Alex Mehran Jr. continued on page 220

Pimple. “He really kind of defaced the entire idea of the gallery,” says Beard. “It was like walking into a junk yard. Women in heels would have to walk around with stuff everywhere. There was smoke and dripping transmission fluid. It was really exciting.” “I think he has an amazing concept of environments and space, and that comes from being a street artist,” muses S.F. resident Sabrina Buell, a partner in art advising firm Zlot Buell + Associates. “Many artists are used to exhibiting in a white cube or on a wall, but street artists will create an experience on any material.” As of late, the avid surfer—who lives in S.F. and West Marin with his wife, artist Clare Rojas, and daughter with Kilgallen (Asha)—has delved into op-art abstraction. He sometimes uses surfboards, plays with letters, numbers and fonts, and his colors have become brighter and more cheerful. Yet, he has never lost his connection to his roots. In 2010, when commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego to [spray] paint two murals, a third, unauthorized graffiti work appeared on a side of the building (to the institution’s great consternation). The latter, a swath of repetitive red “tags” which is considered the lowest form of graffiti, was removed for violating McGee’s agreement with the museum—ironic, since the show was called “Viva la Revolución.” That mix of authenticity with a refined sense of color and line makes McGee appealing to fellow artists and members of the design community, and institutions such as SFMOMA. One of his current dealers, Chris Perez of Ratio 3, sees young collectors fascinated with his work, and older ones who are intrigued by its place in contemporary art history. “They are excited by the youth of it, the haphazardness of it. The detail and the handwork.” Maybe remaining true to his roots keeps McGee’s work fresh. It’s unusual, but the artist stays in constellation of Bay Area creators by working with and celebrating them. This past year, he asked noted Gallery Paule Anglim if he could curate a show about local artists in its storage space. “The police came,” says Beard. “There was a lot of noise and there were so many people, and it’s a tiny little room. It was scrappy and raw, and it exhibited a lot of work by his peers that hadn’t been seen in a long time.” Aug. 24-Dec. 9; bampfa.berkeley.edu. •

a creative outlet for Holmes and one of personal empowerment. The fall lookbook is filled with quotes that embody the sentiment behind each piece. For example, the words next to said navy dress read, “Don’t mistake my sheer sleeves for weakness…there are guns underneath.” While putting the finishing touches on the collection (available at well-edited designer stores such as Barneys New York and Just One Eye), Holmes remained in the Big Apple this summer to film an as-of-yetuntitled project with her friend writer/ director Christian Camargo (with whom she collaborated on 2008’s Broadway run of All My Sons). Set in Kent, Connecticut (she did, in fact, ride the train to get there), the film is a retelling of Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull. Of the role, she says, “My character is a mother, and she’s at an important time in her marriage. The way that she and her husband interact is very blunt. It’s not something that is an obvious love story, but in the end they’re happy together.” During her downtime, Holmes says she has been co-writing her first feature film, Molly, a mother-daughter tale in which she also plans to star and produce. The single mom, an ex-dancer (like Holmes, who still takes ballet lessons with Suri and has her dance charity Dizzy Feet), struggles to raise a 10-year-old in Astoria. Haven’t we just been talking about this? “Oh, no, this is a story on its own,” she assures me. So will Suri be playing the daughter? “Yeah, we’re going to age her up,” she jokes. “No no no no no.” She can’t stay in N.Y. forever and has plans to return to L.A. this fall for some face time (in the divorce settlement, she also reportedly retained the Montecito spread she shared with Cruise). “It’s important to be there. You have to be around the business. There’s stuff you’ve got to do.” New York may be closer to her family in Ohio, but she’ll always have a life in California, and time here is never without visits to the Brentwood Country Mart and Gjelina in Venice. “I like to go there with my girlfriends and really eat. Like, a whole pizza.” L.A. is where it all began, when Holmes arrived on the scene and into our hearts as the bright-eyed, bubbly Joey Potter on “Dawson’s Creek.” “I’m ready to take on some more challenging roles. I feel like I worked so much at such a young age that I really wanted to have life experiences,” she says, as if checking off a list. She adds, “So, now I feel more balanced, like I have more to bring to the table.” •

a great-grandson of IBM founder Thomas Watson Sr. and scion of the San Francisco real-estate development family, that fragility now rests upon a stable foundation. And she has momentarily stepped out of the spotlight to savor her turn as wife and mother. In 1998, the dashing couple met in Manhattan through her sister-in-law, photographer Annabel Mehran, who was pals with Rizer Mehran’s roommates (models Karen Elson and Erin O’Connor). Still wrapped in the peripatetic life, Rizer Mehran was in no rush to date. Her future husband—an inveterate organizer whose attention to detail serves his passion for competitive sport sailing—never gave up. A year ago, the couple moved 35 miles east of San Francisco, to Contra Costa County’s bucolic hamlet of Diablo, near Sunset Development, where Mehran serves as Vice President and General Manager. Boasting a population of 1,158, this former seasonal resort town is so small that Rizer Mehran picks up her daily mail at the 1900s-era Diablo Post Office. “I love it. It’s perfect for me,” she enthuses. “We hang out with the dogs and barbecue. I don’t feel like I’m missing a thing. We’re re-landscaping our yard from an English garden to a Vermont meadow. And I love to cook so we’re redoing our kitchen, too.” Rizer Mehran keeps at least one tootsie in the work world, however. With Trump Models, she recently shot for Red Magazine and is contemplating some fashion gigs this autumn. “I haven’t done shows in a billion years, so I’m a little scared. It’s like a 50-year-old going back to college. And these new girls are, like, 18-feet-tall,” she laughs. “I miss it, but modeling is harder than people realize. Now with a husband, baby and the dogs, I’m trying to figure out how to make it all work.” She dedicates her free time as an Operation Smile ambassador, ASPCA supporter and amFAR AIDS activist. During her pregnancy, she created a blog (beamakes three.com) about her beloved Golden Retrievers and their new west coast world. Even in the transition to California, a part of Rizer Mehran’s heart remains in the far reaches of northern New York, near Lake Ontario. In Sackets Harbor, a small village where her family has summered for more than 100 years, she refurbished an old cottage where she loves to visit with friends. “I finally feel stable and secure. I have a wonderful husband and baby. It may look like I’ve led a charmed life. But I’ve experienced many low-lows, and that keeps me in touch with reality,” she says. “Because of Alex and my family, I know really clearly that it’s not what’s in your life, it’s about who’s in your life.” •

the relationship between Hollywood and the fashion industry will never go out of style: the red carpet is perhaps the most scrutinized of all catwalks, in-vogue costume designers come with their own fashion houses (rodarte), movie stars grace magazine covers, designers make feature films (tom Ford, A Single Man, 2009), actors launch clothing lines (well, everyone), and there are even supermodels on marquees. Here, L.A.-based model/actress Devon Aoki stands behind tinseltown’s most iconic landmark. text by kelsey mckinnon
