FOUNDER’S LETTER

C FOR MEN

In books, films and life, I’ve always had a soft spot for the antihero—the complex personality who adds dimension to an otherwise straightforward story. In this issue of C for Men, that preference for contradiction is a throughline: Take our cover star Aaron Taylor-Johnson for starters. His character in Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals is about as bad and morally bankrupt as they come, yet his performance is nothing short of transfixing, leaving you wanting more. The actor’s spine-tingling, Golden Globe-winning turn solidified his permanence in a town built on the contrary. We were thrilled when his accomplished wife, artist and director Sam Taylor-Johnson, accepted our invitation to photograph Aaron, star of The Wall (in theaters in May), for us in the wilds of Joshua Tree, where we explore the sartorial side of spring through the intimate lens of husband and wife. With comparisons to Brad Pitt trailing Boyd Holbrook, and moody roles in the Netflix series Narcos and the forthcoming reboot of Predator, there’s something of a “bad boy” persona attached to the actor. He cleans up well in this season’s best suiting in “Smoke Show.” In design, the mingling of opposing forces is critical to success: Photographer and beauty industry veteran Davis Factor knows this well, and invited us into his ultimate live-work space to show that style and substance (not to mention killer views) can all reside in harmony. Speaking of finding equilibrium, water is one element that has always been synonymous with rebirth; after all, the ocean can cleanse even the darkest of moods. Throw in epic waves and a surfboard, and the combination can elevate some to their highest levels of being, as evidenced in this issue’s portfolio by photographer and native Californian Adam Fedderly, who makes a study of water, waves and renewal. Our editors scoured the state to bring you the best in design, culture, food, wine and style, nearly all of which converge in our tour of RVCA’s headquarters in Costa Mesa, where, surrounded by art, employees of the apparel brand can clock time on the skate ramp or in the boxing ring throughout the day. Striking this type of balance—between work and play, light and dark—creates a spark that’s as seductive as it is bewildering. It’s in these gray areas that the most interesting things are uncovered.

PAT TENORE “It’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle,” says Pat Tenore of the philosophy he instills at his brand’s Costa Mesa headquarters (“Purpose Built,” p.30). As founder and president of the 16-year-old lifestyle sports label RVCA, Tenore is unique in his approach: “People aren’t at RVCA to get a discount on board shorts—they’re here for the culture.” C SPOTS • 6817 Gallery on Melrose: Gallerist Theo Niarchos puts on shows that aren’t easily available to the West Coast • My friend Toss Carson has made Bear Flag Fish Co. in Newport Beach something special • The Luggage Store in S.F. is an amazing art gallery that’s been there for decades; the couple behind it, Laurie Lazer and Darryl Smith, run the nonprofit 509 Cultural Center ADAM FEDDERLY Photographer and California native Adam Fedderly’s “Water Lovers” is a dynamic series of images centered on water: the energy of it and the surfers and swimmers who submerge themselves in it (“Life Force,” p.86). His mantra: “Art is the most pure love, water is life, and swimming is meditation with exercise,” says Fedderly, who lives on Naples Island with his wife and son. C SPOTS • Alamitos Bay for a swim or paddle board • The Native Hotel in Malibu after a surf for rest, relaxation and repeat the next day • San Onofre Beach for a fun family day. • Palm Springs for cacti, swimming pools and architecture by Neutra, Frey, Lautner and Kisel

SAM TAYLOR-JOHNSON Acclaimed photographer, artist and Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson went behind the lens to capture her husband, actor and C for Men cover star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, for “Leaps & Bounds,” on p.60. The pair, who met on the set of 2009’s Nowhere Boy—a directorial feature film debut for her, and breakout role for him—took on Joshua Tree in freezing temperatures to capture the wilder side of spring’s sartorial standouts. Sam recently completed filming for her Netflix series, Gypsy, set to be released later this year. CHRISTOPHER MERCIER “It was a

Arcade games, iced trays of caviar, an indie rock concert and a surfeit of silk scarves made Hermès’ Downtown L.A. party one to remember. Under the social-media-friendly banner of DWNTWNMEN, the French luxury fashion house welcomed 1,300 guests to a repurposed warehouse, reimagined by men’s artistic director Véronique Nichanian and artist Anthony Burrill. While the spring show was an encore of the sandals and tie-dye-infused presentation unveiled in Paris last June, Hermès invited L.A. luminaries such as Commune co-founder Roman Alonso, MOCA director Philippe Vergne and Alma chef Ari Taymor to walk the runway. Postshow, guests wandered throughout the space, which was transformed into a multisensory experience complete with interactive installations and a performance under the stars by Long Beach-based Cold War Kids. George Kotsiopoulos couldn’t get enough of a listening room brimming with vinyl LPs featuring soundtracks from past presentations and decorated with iconic Hermès scarf prints. As the style expert observed, “Hermès’ showing in L.A. was important to solidify the city’s recognition as the sophisticated international destination that it’s become.” hermes.com. • KHANH T.L. Culver City

After enjoying an enviable commute centered around his five clustered L.A. restaurants, including Orsa & Winston and Bar Amá, Downtown L.A. denizen and chef Josef Centeno is branching out west. And yet Culver City’s BäcoShop, his latest project, is actually the restaurant he meant to get around to opening years ago. “It’s coming full circle, and doing what I was intending to do with Bäco [Mercat] anyway,” he says about his ambitions for running a fast casual spot. Here the bäco, Centeno’s signature flatbread-based hybrid dish that’s a vehicle for playing with global flavors and local ingredients, is front and center. Other hearty yet fresh Cali-inflected fare includes his riff on a Brussels sprouts-based Caesar salad, and green beans spiked with anchovy dressing and pecorino cheese. Among the libation enthusiasts who have fallen for mezcal is David de Rothschild, who under his eco-conscious lifestyle brand, The Lost Explorer, now offers the small-batch spirit distilled from the agave heart, or piña. The native Londoner and current Venice resident embraces the Oaxacan product’s complexities, gravitating toward the relatively less common tobala varietal. “The subtleties of nature, weather—and some believe even sound— affect the bacteria and flavor profiles,” de Rothschild says. “The partnership with nature makes the process into an art form.”

Founded by tech entrepreneur Ari Goldberg and plastic surgeon Justin Rome, Barber Surgeons Guild ushers the traditional hub for haircuts and shaves into the modern era. Opening in May, the brand’s debut West Hollywood shop combines grooming services for men with an in-house organic product line and subscription service, and cutting-edge hair-growth therapies such as stem-cell treatments and robotic hair microtransplants. 805 Larrabee St., W.H.

The James Beard-nominated chef and owner of L.A.’s beloved Night+Market restaurants, Kris Yenbamroong, has a subtly refined approach to Thai street food—an attitude that’s also manifested in his high-low personal style. “I wear the same thing in the kitchen as I do out of it. I just change into Dansko clogs and lose the leather jacket,” admits the lifelong Angeleno, who opened his first outpost next to his family’s longstanding Sunset Strip eatery, Talesai, in 2010. As he continues to feed his appetite for fashion—most recently with an eyewear collaboration with Garrett Leight—the Silver Lakebased restaurateur also plans to grow his dining empire, with a new third location coming soon to Venice and a Night+Market cookbook to be released in the fall. RVCA founder Pat Tenore says “long story short” a lot. When we meet in his corner office, inside the lifestyle sports brand’s 70,000-square-foot Costa Mesa headquarters, he introduces the tale of his unlikely career trajectory this way, nodding to the “nerds and misfits” on his high school wrestling team, the Beastie Boys, the Chanel logo and Bruce Lee’s yin-yang-rooted philosophy. The disparate references eventually dovetail into his role as founder and president of an internationally beloved, distinctly Californian brand (pronounced ru-kah), launched when he was only 26. The brevity of the anecdote is relative; Tenore’s aptitude as a raconteur is fairly irrefutable. As he sinks into a leather chair, the air permeated by the scent of Kuumba incense burning in a lump of ivory surf wax on his desk, he confesses he’s running on two hours’ sleep—just off a flight back from watching a surf contest in Hawaii and already a half-hour late for an appointment with his renowned Japanese-Italian tattoo artist Koji Ichimaru, to be followed by a meeting with skateboard legend Christian Hosoi, with whom he is working on a touring exhibition of one-off painted hammerhead boards (Hosoi pioneered the shape 30 years ago). Downstairs, everything that usually happens to keep an apparel business humming is happening, along with many things that don’t: a rotating art gallery is staged with work by artists including painter Kevin Ancell, while employees are on the skate ramp and working out in the boxing ring in the gym, with a mural by RETNA (Tenore’s friend) as their backdrop. Part of the brand’s mission from the start has been to foster careers for emerging and established talents they refer to as “advocates” (this diverse group includes jiujitsu star BJ Penn and electro-R&B musician Nylo); today Oahu-based 18-year-old pro surfer and newly fledged MMA fighter Kona Oliveira is downstairs training with RVCA coaches and senseis. “I’ve always wanted to blend and incorporate things that I appreciate; from artwork and music to skateboarding to surfing to mixed martial arts to boxing to jiujitsu,” says Tenore. Raised in and around S.F. and Corona del Mar, Tenore opened his first store when he was 18, stocking work wear by the likes of X-Large and Ben Davis. After selling half of the business to buy a house, prompted by the birth of his first son, Joseph (who is now 23; Tenore also has another son, Ethan, 14, and a daughter, Marley, 13), he took up freelance graphic design from his garage, where the inspiration for the label was born. “There was no need for another clothing brand, but I wanted a platform for artists,” says Tenore, who was struck by the lack of recognition he observed for creative work. STILLS FROM WETSUIT, A NEW SHORT FILM BY DEWEY NICKS FEATURING MILLER’S OATH.

TAKI NG T H E PLU N G E In 2016, bespoke tailor Kirk Miller opened a West Coast outpost of his brand Miller’s Oath at the Montecito Country Mart, and now has unveiled a crop of new unstructured California sport coats. Handcrafted with the East Coast-meets-English tradition for which Miller is known, the offerings feature lightweight construction in textured linens and knits conducive to warmer weather and an easygoing attitude. To mark the occasion, Miller teamed with photographer Dewey Nicks for Wetsuit, a short film made in Santa Barbara that marries sport coats with surfboards, out at sea. “I love the California vibe and especially the surf culture,” says Miller. “I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we gave new meaning to the term wetsuit?’” Watch the label take to the waves online.

Louis Vuitton’s Kim Jones turns to his well-worn passport for inspiration “Travel is what I do,” Kim Jones says from a balcony at Chateau Marmont. The men’s artistic director at Louis Vuitton has in fact been globe-trotting since he was three months old. “I grew up between London and Ethiopia, Tasmania and Botswana,” he explains. “I spent time in Ecuador and the Bahamas, depending on where my dad, a hydrogeologist, was needed. I loved it!” Recent miles clocked include road trips through South Africa, boat excursions in Greece between the Amanzoe in Porto Heli and Hydra, as well as stops in Siem Reap in Cambodia; Tswalu in the Kalahari; and Japan—“about 80 times!” adds Jones. This past fall, Jones found himself in Los Angeles, another favorite destination, to host a dinner celebrating Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2017 collection. “I love L.A.,” says Jones, who joined Louis Vuitton in 2011 as men’s style director. “It’s cosmopolitan and outdoors; you’ve got the sea, nature, everything I like.” He enjoys California so much that Yosemite inspired his Spring/Summer ’14 collection for the house—all knotted bandanas and mother-of-pearl pins on khaki jackets. His latest offering is a wanderlust-inducing love letter to Africa, where he grew up, and London and Paris, where he now splits his time. Desert-hued crocodile and springbok leather and electric blue zebra prints, Maasai checks and safari shirts are mixed in with punk accents like buckles, clips and dog collars, while oddlooking animal etchings from the Chapman Brothers are plastered on signature monogrammed bags. Jones’ jet-setting befits the luxury behemoth born out of the travel trunk Monsieur Vuitton introduced in 1858. “I take tons of photos, I buy lots of things,” he says. “My friends always laugh because I can spot something—in a little shop or what someone’s wearing—from a mile away!” His dream destination? “Papua New Guinea is the one,” he says. “There’s always something else to see.” louisvuitton.com. • KIKI GEORGIOU

SOUNDING OFF “There are so many technical processes involved,” artist Sam Spenser says of “Sound Check,” his series of functional sculptural microphones that sound as good as they look, showcasing original design, engineering savvy and a dazzling degree of craftsmanship. The second of the three pieces, which combine old and new technologies and precious metals, is on exhibit at Maxfield on Melrose. (The first, pictured, was sold to a private collection and the third is currently a work in progress.) The London native, who lives in L.A., explores how various materials and disciplines “create a harmony” when all in balance. 8825 Melrose Ave., W.H., 310-274-8800.

VIEW FINDER We asked Marvin J. Malecha, president and chief academic officer at NewSchool of Architecture & Design in San Diego, to share his perspective on the city. Tell us about the energy surrounding the San Diego architecture scene. San Diego has a constant underlying relationship to the climate, environment and way of life. Every step that is taken in the design of a new project begins with these factors. In other places there is considerable concern for the environment but it is more like a checklist approach. In San Diego it is the frame that envelops all other decisions. How else is the city distinguishing itself? We are seeing young architects experiment with materials that are both high touch and high tech. This is probably most evident in small projects. [For example] two restaurants designed by Tecture, a young and ambitious firm in San Diego, are Kettner Exchange and The Patio on Goldfinch. Which iconic California buildings continue to inspire you? The Salk Institute, the Schindler House, the Eames House, Richard Neutra’s Lovell House, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels by Rafael Moneo...several Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, and a couple of remaining Irving Gill houses that are worth the effort to find.

CHEF DANO HEINZE AT TROIS FAMILIA. Below: BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH LEEKS, PISTACHIOS AND DILL.

“Dano Heinze is easily one of the most talented guys in this city right now,” says chef Jon Shook, who, along with his partner, Vinny Dotolo, runs some of L.A.’s most revered restaurants, including Animal and Son of a Gun. Shook and Dotolo’s faith in Heinze is so strong that, when the culinary talent decided to leave his post as chef de cuisine under chef Sean Brock at the esteemed Charleston, S.C., fine-dining establishment McCrady’s, the duo offered to introduce him to the L.A. restaurant world. The result: Heinze’s buzzy ongoing pop-up dinner residency at Trois Familia, Shook and Dotolo’s daytime French- and Mexican-influenced Silver Lake eatery in collaboration with chef Ludo Lefebvre. Every week, on evenings from Thursday through Saturday, Heinze crafts a three-course prix fixe menu, dictated by his freshfare finds from the Santa Monica Farmers Market. “It’s really easy to cook in California,” says Heinze. “The vegetables are so good, you don’t really have to do much to them.” His Technicolor dishes (beets infused with barley, kale, radicchio and yogurt; cured salmon garnished with citrus, sesame and dill) are as flavorful as they are creative: Heinze honed his eye for plating while building McCrady’s inventive tasting menus. “His food is simply gorgeous and delicious,” agrees Shook. “I want to get into more casual food, with a more fun atmosphere,” says Heinze, who was inspired to move to L.A. in part by the burgeoning and multicultural dining landscape. He has designs on eventually opening his own L.A. restaurant. For now, Heinze says, “I’m just experimenting with what works.” Trois Familia, 3510 Sunset Blvd., L.A., 323-7257800; resy.com. •

“Music festivals used to be a ton of chain-link fence and some dude selling hot dogs,” Nic Adler remembers. Thanks to the hospitality scion’s vision, said culinary wasteland is now the domain of some of the food world’s most buzzed-about talents.“I was always around food and music,” says Adler, whose father, music mogul Lou Adler, opened the Roxy Theater in 1973 and the Rainbow a few years earlier on the Sunset Strip. The younger Adler owned a hip-hop club and two restaurants before managing a spate of Ozzfest-friendly bands and operating The Roxy for 15 years. Four years ago, he was having a beer at the Rose Bowl with Paul Tollett, CEO of Goldenvoice (the powerhouse concert promoter behind Coachella), when Adler confessed that he saw greater opportunities for the festival’s food and beer program. That night, he wrote and sent a manifesto to Tollett. Adler has curated the desert happening’s food and beverage lineup ever since, bringing in top L.A. chefs like Ricardo Zarate and Neal Fraser, and orchestrating high-end sit-down experiences like Outstanding in the Field. This summer, Adler will debut at Arroyo Seco (June 24-25), curating the food and music lineup at the festival headlined by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Mumford & Sons, set in Pasadena’s Brookside Park. He’s excited about the “highly layered and visual experiences” the event is creating with chefs like Union’s Bruce Kalman and République’s Walter Manzke. Adler is also set to oversee the culinary lineup for the Eat Drink Vegan festival, at the Rose Bowl on May 27, a gathering that will boast 100 L.A. food vendors ranging from Bondi Harvest to Trejo’s Tacos, all forsaking meat and dairy on their menus for the occasion. arroyosecoweekend.com; eatdrinkvegan.com

FOUR SEASONS RESORT LANAI CAN ARRANGE PRIVATE FLIGHT LESSONS FOR AN ADRENALINERAISING HAWAII EXPERIENCE.

TRAVEL

Clockwise from top left: OFF-ROADING IN A FOUR-SEAT UTV. A PENTHOUSE PRIME OCEAN FRONT SUITE. TWO LANAIS ON THE PROPERTY. ONE OF THE POOLS. A WOODEN TUB IN THE ALII ROYAL SUITE.

Dotted with Norfolk and Cook Island pines, Hawaii’s tiny central island has always been understated. In 2012, Silicon Valley mogul Larry Ellison bought Lanai outright and made a multimillion-dollar investment in refurbishing the resident Four Seasons Resort Lanai. Unveiled in 2016, the diamond in the rough was polished into an ultraluxe, ecologically responsible resort outfitted for high-flying travelers. Flanked by secluded beaches and natural wonders, the refreshed property embodies the island’s unplugged vibe and wraps it in upscale creature comforts like cliffside dining at Nobu Lanai and airy, 700-square-foot rooms decked in natural materials. Still, the thing to do at this hilltop hideaway is to embark on a rugged adventure. Take to the water by scuba diving through ocean caves, deep-sea fishing for mahi-mahi, or mastering waves at surfing hotspots. Soar high through the resort’s exclusive Air Experience, which can set up a flight lesson with Maui Flight Academy or a helicopter tour of an active volcano. Or stay grounded as you ride up the mountain to the Puu Makani heiau temple on a guided Polaris UTV. Spend perfect days hiking in tropical idylls such Keahiakawelo, Puu Pehe and the Palawai Basin; then grab lunch among surfers at Malibu Farm, where later you can cap off your experience with sunsets, pupus and inspired cocktails at the bar. fourseasons.com/lanai • MARTINE BURY

When Aaron Taylor-Johnson first visited Los Angeles from his home in the suburbs of London, he thought, “Fucking hell, this is what paradise is.” He was 12 years old. Already an actor for six years, he came to Hollywood for the El Capitan Theatre premiere of the 2003 action film Shanghai Knights, in which he starred with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. “It was me and my mum. Being a kid here was really exciting,” recalls Taylor-Johnson, now 26, over a leisurely, profanity-laced breakfast at Estrella restaurant in West Hollywood. “You can go to the beach in February. I was in Santa Monica swimming in the ocean.” Taylor-Johnson—who pulled off a stunning win at this year’s Golden Globes for his supporting role as a West Texas psychopath in Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals (2016)—wasn’t so enchanted by the city when he returned on his own three years later. At 15, he lived in L.A. for a year, going on auditions, renting short-term rooms (“from agents’ assistants’ assistants,” he says) and being driven around town by a screenwriter who needed cash during the writers’ strike. Making the Hollywood rounds felt like a chore. His reward was winning the breakout lead role in 2010’s Kick-Ass, a superhero black comedy that built a cult following. “I wanted to be in London. At that point, I was able to go in and out of clubs in London and do whatever the fuck I wanted,” says Taylor-Johnson, his blue eyes bright and unguarded, and dressed in jeans, a Double RL denim jacket and a Gucci flannel shirt with two embroidered snakes on the collar. His demeanor in person is low-key and sweet-natured, a marked contrast to some of the hard-edged roles he pulls off on-screen, including Quicksilver in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. In May, he stars in Doug Liman’s psychological thriller The Wall, playing an American soldier pinned down by an Iraqi sniper with only a crumbling wall as shield. It took having kids of his own to make him fall for L.A. again. While filming Oliver Stone’s marijuana drama Savages (2012), he and his wife—the photographer, artist and Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson—rented a house in Los Angeles for themselves and their brood. “Our kids would run around naked outside in the garden and jump in the pool from morning on. It was just like a revelation to me,” says Taylor-Johnson. “We went back to London after and it’s piss-pouring rain. I remember them sort of banging on the windows to go outside and not wanting to wear coats.” For the kids’ sake and also because so many of their projects film on the West Coast, the pair moved out west permanently, buying a 1920s Spanish house in the Hollywood Hills three years ago, where they live with their two daughters, Wylda, 5, and Romy, 7, plus Sam’s two daughters from her previous marriage to London art dealer Jay Jopling, Jessie, 10, and, when she’s home, Angelica, 18, a freshman at Stanford. He

loves being a father so much, he typically takes on only one film project a year. “It’s gotta be fucking brilliant to pull me away from something I already love doing,” says the actor, who, in said day job, can be seen dropping off the kids at school in shorts, flipflops and a hoodie. Last year, that one project was Amazon Studios’ The Wall, co-starring John Cena, which shot for two weeks in Southern California with the Lancaster/Palmdale area standing in for the Iraqi desert. “Aaron flew himself to New York, showed up in my office and said ‘I want this part,’ and auditioned for me,” says director Liman, who remembers Taylor-Johnson’s commitment to the role early on. “Not only was he showing extraordinary talent, but the energy he put into getting the part—given the kind of part it was going to be— it really meant something to me. He was going to be holding the whole movie together shooting under the most inhospitable conditions.” Taylor-Johnson prepares heavily for his roles. For Nocturnal Animals, that meant watching documentaries about serial killers, drinking hard liquor, smoking and spending time in Texas to pick up the right accent. For his new film, he added 30 pounds to his normal 160-pound frame and chewed Copenhagen Wintergreen tobacco. “A lot of these guys dip tobacco.

gonna be the year where Sam and I get to really work together as a team in a professional way.” You’re out there and gotta be focused for hours on end. It’s a stimulant,” he says. He also spent four days in a sniper program at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas and trained with ex-military sniper Nicholas “The Reaper” Irving on set. “He got his nickname because in his first three months of deployment he had 33 confirmed kills,” says Taylor-Johnson, who gets up from his chair and stoops down near the side of the table to show off iPhone snaps of himself in sniper training. Irving was impressed with the actor’s skills. “He’s just a natural—he was pulling off shots on target at 800 meters. That’s eight football fields,” Irving says. “I’ve trained [everyone] from Finnish special operations to the snipers who patrol the Super Bowl, and Aaron was the fastest I’ve ever seen do that.” Continued on p.102

An Angeleno with a Hollywood pedigree, lensman Davis Factor grew up with dueling influences—the grit of skateboarding with the Dogtown kids in the ’70s, and the gloss of his family’s illustrious legacy (his great-grandfather was iconic makeup artist Max Factor). His love for athletic pursuits led him to ski, and to photograph the U.S. Ski Team. “I’ve always had a camera with me,” says the garrulous, 6-foot-tall Factor, whose uniform du jour consists of a black T-shirt, jeans, Ray-Ban Wayfarers and a pair of Nikes. Such youthful poise led him to his current career: shooting celebrities for publications including Variety and L’Uomo Vogue, and producing ad campaigns for the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Guess and Pepsi, often at his hip photographic hub, Smashbox Studios in Culver City. Seven years ago, Factor embarked on a major renovation of his low-slung 1959 residence, set along the Mulholland Corridor, with a clear vision: “I wanted it to feel like the coolest hotel, but still warm and inviting like a home.” It also needed to house his photo studio and entertainment center, and serve as a personal retreat. He tapped architect Christopher Mercier of (fer) studio in Inglewood for a seamless addition: roughly 3,000 square feet of interior space, including a master suite and spacious living room and bar, as well as a 2,600-square-foot deck-patio-pool area, among other new exterior spaces. Taking his cue from the original

midcentury post-and-beam structure, Mercier used exposed steel in-filled with glass windows and sliders to capitalize on the 180-degree view of the San Fernando Valley. “I was involved in everything from the foundation to selecting pillowcases,” says Factor, who views the house as an art project. Indeed, the home’s subtle grayscale palette is reminiscent of one of his black-andwhite photographs. Interior designer Sarah Buxton helped to source the modern-classic furnishings, such as Hudson’s Grid coffee table and a seductively comfortable Flexform sofa. An avid surfer, Factor stores 12 boards in a walk-in closet aptly referred to as “The Board Room.” (He keeps his ski collection at a vacation home in Snowbird, Utah.) Being the senior vice president and creative director for Smashbox Cosmetics—a line he developed with his brother Dean and sold to Estée Lauder in 2010—keeps him traveling four months out of the year. A new gym added to the original house finds Factor cross-training, boxing and practicing yoga five times a week “to get ready for my day,” he says. The room’s white walls and high ceiling double as a home photo studio. Ditto the nature path designed by architect Victoria Pakshong, which leads from the gym up the hillside—a perfect venue for alfresco workouts, or shooting a music video for the likes of Indio Falconer Downey. When the doors are wide open, the sleek California home resonates an indoor-outdoor vibe day and night. A launch party for new Smashbox lipstick shades by sisters Erin and Sara Foster found guests inside and out: curled up on the sofa by the fireplace, standing by the pool mesmerized by valley lights. “No one was on their phone the whole night, and no one wanted to leave,” says Factor. Luckily for him, he doesn’t have to. •

“I AIM TO PHOTOGRAPH EVERYONE’S BEST SELF,” SAYS ADAM FEDDERLY, WHO CAPTURED SURFING LEGEND KELLY SLATER IN TAHITI THREE YEARS AGO AFTER A CHANCE ENCOUNTER. FEDDERLY CALLS WORLDCHAMPION PADDLE BOARDER, BIG-WAVE SURFER AND NEWPORT BEACH RESIDENT JAMIE MITCHELL A “SUPER ATHLETE. HE TAKES THE BIGGEST WAVES—AND SUCH A PHYSICAL BEATING.”

Feature (tbd)

After eight years in New York, Adam Fedderly was starting to feel the primal tug of the Southern California tide. “I was always missing the water, always trying to find a pool or a beach,” says the photographer, a third-generation Californian who spent much of his childhood surfing San Onofre and First Point, among others. So in 2012, with his young family in tow, the lensman and long-distance swimmer ditched his Manhattan studio, trading the cramped chaos of NYC for the open horizon and waves of his native SoCal—a move motivated as much by geography as his growing fascination with the architecture of H2O. “I have an attraction to the energy of water, to the ions,” he says. “It has this ability to nurture you, to take you from feeling overwhelmed to calm.” And with an idea to capture that transformative power on camera, Fedderly’s “Water Lovers” project was born. Shortly after settling back in Long Beach, the 42-year-old found himself between ad campaigns, and back in the sand with camera in hand, documenting swimmers, surfers and any other beachgoer who would let him take their picture. “The idea was to capture someone right when they get out of the water, to understand what makes them feel good and why,” says Fedderly, who has shot more than 100 beach portraits as part of his ongoing “Water Lovers” series, all in black and white. “It’s about the textures and wanting it to be stripped down to the bare essentials.” Take the droplet falling off surfing legend Kelly Slater’s chin, snapped after an unanticipated encounter with the 11time world champion in Tahiti, or the raw yet serene portrait of 72-year-old surfing great and Costa Mesa native John Peck, who Fedderly bumped into four years ago on a beach in San Clemente. And tying it all together? Powerful waves, shown vertically, as graphic stand-alone elements. “When they break,” says Fedderly, “there’s a haziness where you can’t tell where the water and sky meet, and you can imagine anything.” adamfedderly.com •

Boyd Holbrook is exhausted. “I finished work at 3 a.m.,” he says, yawning. Following a high-profile role in this year’s box-office hit Logan with Hugh Jackman, the 35-year-old is currently shooting another major sci-fi franchise: Shane Black’s highly anticipated Predator reboot based on the 1987 hit Arnold Schwarzenegger film. Holbrook plays Quinn McKenna, an ex-sniper in the Army Rangers tasked with hunting the Predator alongside former Marine Nebraska Williams (Moonlight’s Trevante Rhodes). While Holbrook is in demand now, he remembers when his phone wasn’t ringing. “It’s taken me a long time to get where I’m going,” says the Kentucky native, who made his on-screen debut in 2008’s Milk, a consolation prize from director Gus Van Sant after he passed on a screenplay Holbrook wrote. “Where I’m from, not too many people do what I do,” he says. “When you transfer from school into the work world, it’s a little bumpy. I gave myself two years, and if I wasn’t supporting myself by then it was on to the next.” He initially paid the bills by modeling for the likes of Dior and Calvin Klein. Then, after minor parts in major films like Gone Girl (2014), Holbrook’s breakout role arrived in the form of DEA agent Steve Murphy on Netflix’s Narcos. However, Holbrook is already looking ahead. “I’m hoping, in 2018, that I’m going to finally be behind the camera in an old, rickety director’s chair,” he says, adding that he’s grateful for where his life has led. “My father taught me, ‘Make sure when you put your feet on the ground, you like what you do in the morning.’” Even if it is before sunrise. • LINDZI SCHARF

to Cinelli bicycles struck a chord—eventually attracting Billabong, with whom Tenore brokered an all-assets purchase seven years ago. He’s candid about the ups and downs that come with what he refers to as “the 900-pound gorilla on our backs.” For him, staying on post-acquisition was a no-brainer: “My thing is to make sure that we keep the DNA of the brand... the democratization of a vision or a great idea dilutes it completely,” says Tenore, whose gaze is resolutely future oriented. His full slate of projects also includes books with surf patriarch Herbie Fletcher and photographer Estevan Oriol, and collaborations with premium denim label Agolde and cult Japanese brand Bedwin & the Heartbreakers. “I’m here because I’m obligated to be here. And I like being here for that reason.” • MELISSA GOLDSTEIN

LEAPS & BOUNDS CONTINUED FROM P.75

Taylor-Johnson isn’t sure what his one movie project for 2017 will be, though he’d like to work with his wife again on a film, something he hasn’t done since 2009’s Nowhere Boy, the project on which the two met. He was 18. She was 42. They were engaged within months, and Taylor-Johnson first became a dad at age 20. The couple married in 2012. Eight years later, they’re poster children for the idea that age has no meaning when it comes to matters of the heart. (In March, the actor got his latest tattoo; her name inked on his left pec.) Together they optioned a book that they are developing as a feature film with the idea that he’ll star and she’ll direct. “I feel like this is gonna be the year where Sam and I get to really work together as a team in a professional way. Not only is she my wife, my soul mate, my love and my friend, I want to be that kind of working partner, too. I mean, we spend every second of the day together.” That includes family trips all around California. “You’ve got the beaches in Laguna. We go to the

102

desert to Joshua Tree. One of my favorite places on earth is Big Sur. We’ve skied in Lake Tahoe. California is such a beautiful state,” he says. Asked if he feels the need for a man cave given he’s the only male in a family of six, Taylor-Johnson—who posted a shot of himself on Instagram recently wearing a sweatshirt that says “Male Feminist”—says he doesn’t have one. Then, thinking it over more, says: “Actually, it’s funny: My man cave, I suppose, is the garden. It’s pretty epic.” He has five raised beds in total, two of which are 24 feet long, and he tries to grow most of the vegetables the family eats. He also has six chickens. “The kids plant with me and it’s really lovely,” says Taylor-Johnson. “If the kids are happy, I’m fucking happy.” •

“I think most people think of San Diego as a surf-centered, beachy town, which is only half the story,” says Michael Fuerstman, co-founder and creative director of the locale’s newly minted Pendry boutique hotel (pendryhotels.com). “I like showing off the more citycentric, urban, cutting-edge parts of San Diego, too.” Perhaps this is why the young entrepreneur has firmly planted his establishment (a next-gen offshoot of his father’s Montage Hotels & Resorts) amid the culturally thriving Gaslamp Quarter. Here, his local haunts. • Cantina Mayahuel An incredible selection of tequila and mezcal—I feel like I get an education in both every time I visit. And the food is authentic, not fussy, and unbelievably good. 2934 Adams Ave., S.D. • Kettner Exchange The rooftop is like a big outdoor Southern California living room and it pulls a great crowd. It’s a cool place to catch a sunset and have a cocktail or two and some snacks. kettnerexchange.com. • Torrey Pines Golf Course An epic golf course that’s home to an annual PGA tour and has hosted the U.S. Open. It’s open to the public, and it’s right on the Pacific. torreypinesgolfcourse .com. • Petco Park I’d put it up against any baseball stadium in the U.S.; it’s the best mix of atmosphere, weather, food, beer and location. sandiego.padres.mlb.com. • Lone Flag A great menswear store in Flower Hill—they’ve got a nice aesthetic, cool mix of fashionable and comfortable clothes and home goods, and the guys that run the shop are really good people. loneflag.co. •

CREDITS

Three days after moving to Los Angeles in 2008, Austin, Texas-bred actor Glen Powell had his first official Hollywood moment when he found himself at a dinner, seated serendipitously next to one of his heroes: Dustin Hoffman. “And he was like, ‘Hey, you look familiar,’” recounts Powell, 28. Hoffman had seen the actor in one of his earliest films, Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters, and been impressed. “[Hoffman] is one of my favorite actors of all time, and I was like, ‘Yeah, you too man,’” he says. Soon after, reality hit. “The stakes of the town are quickly shoved upon you, and you realize it’s tough,” continues Powell, now a resident of Beachwood Canyon. Eventually, in 2016, he landed Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! and a role as astronaut John Glenn in the Oscar-nominated drama Hidden Figures. Next, Powell stars opposite Nicholas Hoult in Netflix’s April release, Sand Castle, a war drama for which he underwent intense military training with the Jordanian special forces. “All of a sudden, you get somebody who believes in you—and slowly but surely you get to start choosing roles,” explains Powell, who is currently in London filming the screen adaptation of the bestselling novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society alongside Lily James. “That’s the nice part lately. I’m getting to sit back and go, ‘Oh, let’s do good movies.’” • LINDZI SCHARF
