FOUNDER’S LETTER

At this time of year, a focus on entertaining is fitting—after all, it’s when friends and family gather to mark traditions, soak up soirees dotting the social calendar and revel in the possibilities. Living here gives us ample ways to celebrate with panache—farm-to-table food, fresh blooms and wine from our valleys. It is the way we do it in the Golden State that is different, capped with an ease so often lost in other places around the globe. If you had a house as cozy as the modern Los Angeles log cabin we feature in this issue, you’d be hard-pressed to find a venue more befitting the holiday spirit. Between the original stone fireplace—the ideal centerpiece for any gathering—and the grand room it inhabits, a near replica of the original space whose long tradition of parties dates back to the 1920s, there’s little reason to venture elsewhere during the festive season. It goes without saying that a toast is only as good as the drink it is sealed with. And when it comes to worthy wines, look no further than Sonoma’s Scribe Winery. Vintner Andrew Mariani and his singer-songwriter wife, Lia Ices, invite us into their wine-country abode for a dreamy holiday feast and tour of their piece of paradise. Our cover subject Elle Fanning has been in our collective consciousness since her first leading role at age 9. That she has grown from a successful child actor and seamlessly transitioned to adult roles is a feat that few can accomplish. Fanning consistently picks intriguing characters that never fail to captivate. In December’s 20th Century Women, she holds her own alongside Hollywood heavy hitters Annette Bening and Greta Gerwig, followed by Live by Night, directed by and starring Ben Affleck. We are thrilled to watch this 18-year-old’s star continue to ascend. My dear friend Elaine Irwin also started her career at a young age, breaking onto the modeling scene when she was just 16. When she married John Mellencamp in her early 20s and raised two boys in Indiana for two decades, some thought it was her swan song. But she was just getting started. After her divorce, Irwin moved to Los Angeles, where she married media titan Jay Penske and gave birth to their beautiful daughter—all while ramping back up her modeling career with impressive beauty contracts and campaigns. See Irwin in spring’s sartorial dark side, shot by photographer and filmmaker Kurt Iswarienko along the California coast. In my opinion, she’s the definition of the modern woman, and about as gorgeous as one gets, both inside and out. It’s also the time of year to indulge in gifting and receiving. We present the ultimate wish list for the holiday season, carefully crafted by the editors at C and inspired by California’s majestic and iconic surrounds. Santa, we hope you’re taking note.

C PEOPLE Who’s who behind the scenes of this issue, plus their favorite California places

“For someone so young, Elle Fanning is amazingly composed and comfortable in her own skin and in front of the camera,” says Australian photographer Beau Grealy of capturing this month’s cover subject in “Elle Enchanted,” p.136. Now based in L.A., the lensman has contributed to several publications including Vogue and I.D., as well as high-profile ad campaigns for brands such as Adidas, H&M and Nike. C SPOTS • The Apple Pan in L.A. for a classic burger • My friend’s new gallery, DXIX Projects, in Venice • Malibu Farm restaurant for fresh, delicious food and a great view of First Point from the pier

Stefanie Cove “Co-hosting our dinner was a no-brainer—it had two of my favorite things: girlfriends and the holidays!” says Stefanie Cove of joining forces with Molly Sims and Simone LeBlanc to host and set the tone for the evening (“Merry and Bright,” p.105). Cove has created bespoke events with partner Yifat Oren through their L.A. and NYC-based company, Oren Cove Event Production, for clients including Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore. C SPOTS • Butterfly Beach in Montecito for long walks with my dogs • Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs for relaxing weekends away • Big Sur’s Ventana Inn & Spa for dramatic coastline views

C People 1

Meredith Ouzounian & Emma Lipp “We sat down with Andrew and Lia, and talked about what was popping in the garden,” says Emma Lipp of the philosophy behind the luncheon at the Sonoma home of singer-songwriter Lia Ices and Scribe Winery’s Andrew Mariani (“Winter Magic,” p.166). “We wanted to have fun with it,” she adds—a notion achieved thanks to the shared culinary expertise of fellow Scribe kitchen crew member, Meredith Ouzounian. C SPOTS • Oakland’s Starline Social Club for diverse programming • Ernie’s Tin Bar in Sonoma for the coldest beer in wine country • Thank You For Coming in Atwater Village, a restaurant and art space

Elaine Irwin Christine Lennon L.A. writer Christine Lennon, who profiles Elle Fanning in this month’s cover story (“Elle Enchanted,” p.136), is as much a fan of the 18-year-old starlet as she is of Fanning’s parents: “I’m a mother and she is the definition of parenting goals.” Lennon’s first novel, The Drifter, will be published in February by William Morrow. C SPOTS • NeueHouse Hollywood for an inspiring place to write • Spartina in West Hollywood for delicious Italian on a chic patio • Moon Juice off of Melrose Place

C 40 WINTER 2016/2017

“We managed to raise a few eyebrows along the way, particularly while stopping for burritos wearing an evening gown,” says industry vet and renowned supermodel Elaine Irwin, who dons spring’s monochromatic ensembles in “Pacific Time,” p.154. Irwin, the face of Almay and former Ralph Lauren model, has graced countless covers for the likes of Vogue and Elle in her illustrious modeling career. C SPOTS • Animal House vintage and contemporary clothing store in Venice • Tortoise General Store in Venice for amazing Japanese design and handcrafted items • Cora’s Coffee Shoppe in Santa Monica for breakfast

C People 2 Sarah St. Lifer “My husband and I run two Thai restaurants and we’ll often bring leftovers home for late-night noshing. Nothing beats caviar atop fried chicken or wokcooked noodles,” attests writer and restaurateur Sarah St. Lifer, who profiles purveyor Roe Caviar in “Caviar Dreams,” p.118. When she’s not overseeing L.A.’s Night + Market and Night + Market Song with her chef husband, Kris Yenbamroong—St. Lifer contributes to Cherry Bombe. C SPOTS • L.A.’s Lou Wine Shop & Tastings for a great bottle of natural wine—I’m into gamay and grenache lately • Varsity Los Angeles on Sunset for the best T-shirts, from the Rolling Stones to Selena • Twig & Twine in Los Angeles for last-minute jawdropping floral arrangements

C 42 WINTER 2016/2017

Gemma Price “It was fascinating to hear how Kenzo and Natsuko Tsujimoto realized their dream Japanese restaurant,” says writer Gemma Price of Napa’s latest dining addition in “Eastern Promise,” p.115. Since leaving her native England 11 years ago, Price has lived in Japan and Australia, and now splits her time between Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and San Francisco. C SPOTS • Napa’s Hunter//Gatherer for luxe shaving cream • Chalkboard in Healdsburg for the beef sliders • Chateau du Sureau near Yosemite for feeling like I’m staying in a stately European home

Angie Silvy For Australian photographer Angie Silvy, shooting an alfresco luncheon at Scribe Winery in Sonoma was the definition of an ideal project. “A beautiful lunch surrounded by friends and wine in an exquisite location is a great day,” she confirms. When the award-winning photographer, whose work runs the gamut from fashion to lifestyle and interiors, isn’t working on international projects for Levi’s, Jimmy Choo, Moët & Chandon and W Hotels, she runs her digital content agency, Sterling Silvy, in San Francisco. C SPOTS • Jackson Square in S.F. for great shopping at Isabel Marant and Pia, The Store • Cotogna in Jackson Square for rustic Italian • S.F’s hip Dogpatch neighborhood for The Minnesota Street Project and local art

Chris Peck When it came to conceptualizing a Rustic Canyon home for his clients (“Cabin Fever,” p.146), architect Chris Peck found the brief to be a designer’s dream: “My favorite aspect was the owner’s gumption to go all in on the Paul Bunyan-on-steroids concept,” says Peck. The New Jersey native is the founding principal architect and civil engineer of his Pasadena-based firm, CM Peck Inc. C SPOTS • Walt’s Wharf in Seal Beach for the best fish and bar experience • Bike trails down the L.A. and San Gabriel rivers—gritty, educational and dramatic • Lahaina Beach House in San Diego—it’s a party all the time

“We wanted Elaine [Irwin] to have a very natural, undone look,” recalls Venice-based hairstylist David Cox of his vision for the model’s hair in this month’s fashion shoot (“Pacific Time,” p.154). “She has this great natural wave, which I enhanced.” The Cape Town, South Africa, native has tended the manes of famous faces including Carolyn Murphy, Pierce Brosnan and Matt Damon. C SPOTS • Zelda’s Corner in Venice with my daughter for mini donuts with cinnamon • Biking and surfing down the road at the Venice Breakwater • Minestrone and really good bread at Gjusta in Venice

California has left its culinary mark on the husband-and-wife duo behind popular San Francisco eatery RICH TABLE—lauded for its inventive FLAVOR pairings and market-driven dishes. “We thought we knew SEASONAL cooking when we were working in New York, but it wasn’t until we experienced the BOUNTY of what the Bay Area has to offer that we really began to understand seasonality,” says Evan. This winter, they will follow up with RT Rotisserie, serving up fast-casual fare with a comfort-food twist. richtablesf.com.

COURTESY OF CODOGNATO

Rare Beauties “Apart from museums, I have always been reluctant to exhibit outside of my place in Venice,” admits the Italian master jeweler Attilio Codognato, whose memento mori designs, in his almost 60 years as head of the Casa Codognato, founded in 1866 by his great-grandfather,

Simeone, have amassed a cult following spanning European royal families to Elton John and Nicole Kidman. This makes “Coveted: Jewels by Codognato,” the company’s first-ever gallery exhibition at San Francisco’s Serge Sorokko Gallery, an exclusive treat. Even better:

For the holidays, each of the nearly 50 pieces is on sale. “Serge and Tatiana Sorokko have been encouraging me for more than two decades,” says Codognato. “Their persistence has paid off.” Dec. 8-Jan. 7. 55 Geary St., S.F., 415-4217770; sorokko.com. • KIKI GEORGIOU WINTER 2016/2017 C 51

SILVER LAKE

Planting Roots Think of Botanica as your favorite new magazine, market and restaurant crush. The duo behind the ambitious new Silver Lake concept, Heather Sperling and Emily Fiffer, have harnessed their combined experience as food editors and cooks (Fiffer interned in Ottolenghi’s Nopi restaurant in London, and Sperling was an editor at Tasting Table in Chicago) to launch a digital publication in November that showcases recipes and how-to techniques straight from their brick-andmortar restaurant and marketplace, set to open in spring 2017. “Botanica Mag is

WH (turn)

designed to help us connect with home cooks beyond the restaurant’s four walls,” says Fiffer, who met Sperling in Chicago, where they co-founded pop-up food and design markets. While considering locations for their next venture, they were drawn to Los Angeles for its yearround growing season. “Everything—the restaurant, market and website—is intertwined and designed to make cooking sustainable, healthy food more accessible, whether you’re a Silver Lake resident buying produce at our market, or a Swedish home cook who loves vegetables and looks to Botanica for inspiration.” Botanica focuses on sustainability, creativity and vegetable-centric food such as Turkish eggs with Aleppo-infused butter, lemon- and garlic-spiked sheep’s milk yogurt, and caramelized leeks, a riff on plateau de fruits de mer with raw and cooked vegetables alongside dipping sauces, and a seriously decadent chocolate olive oil mousse—all recipes that readers will be able to find on their site or potentially order from the Silver Lake restaurant’s evolving menu. The website also features an online market and travel guide. And while Botanica’s ethos is plant-based, Sperling says, “We aren’t strictly vegan or vegetarian. Our only rule is that it’s got to be delicious, and you have to feel good after.” botanicamag.com.

ALICE’S Wonderland

By way of London and New York, Alice Ryan (aliceryan.com) landed in California last year. The PR marvel, mother of three, and wife to bespoke tailor Kirk Miller is enjoying sunnier days at home in Montecito and a glittering roster of West Coast clients including Ladurée, Brentwood Country Mart and Bonpoint. We caught up with Ryan to distill her effortless entertaining style. Can you share a few of your favorite party planning tricks? A beautiful

invitation, even handwritten on Smythson stock (smythson.com), sets the tone. I love to use Kate Schelter (kateschelter.com) for watercolored place cards and menus and Ellen Weldon (weldondesign.com) for larger dinners. When I got married and had a bridal lunch with my girlfriends, Antony Todd (antonytodd.com) sent each person a single peony in a handblown glass vase. When entertaining, how do you handle seating arrangements? I like to work from a seating chart—the one Anya Hindmarch (anyahindmarch.com) designed is my favorite. Having worked in New York, L.A. and London, I pretty much know who likes whom. What’s the most memorable dinner you’ve ever been to? A milestone birthday in Bedford, N.Y., at home with Ricky and Ralph Lauren. There were no more than a dozen of us, it was late January in a snow blizzard, and the setting was magical. As the black-tie dinner drew to an end, we had Champagne with cake, [and] then Ricky brought out the karaoke machine. Ralph was better than any of us. He was Frank Sinatra, all night long. Can you share a favorite Miller family tradition? This year, Santa Claus will come to the Montecito Country Mart (montecito countrymart.com) and I will arrange a gingerbread house party there for all of the children in our new hometown. Traditions come by way of happy memories—I look forward to creating many of them.

Luck be a LADY

The DIOR hallmark gets an ARTISTIC MAKEOVER

3.

2.

Since its inception in 1995, Dior’s Lady Dior bag has become a star on the accessory scene. With its classic shape and architectural handle, it’s also ripe for reinterpretation. The French fashion house recently invited London-based contemporary artist Marc Quinn to reimagine the bag as a tribute to Dior’s new Bond Street store opening in London, which ultimately paved the way for the Dior Lady Art project. This December, the story continues with seven British and American artists, each given creative carte blanche for artistic expressions, with many transposing their own signature motifs to the purse and a range of other small accessories. Designs range from sculptural—Jason Martin’s monochromatic creations look like feminine forms of rippling metal—to photographic, such as Quinn’s Technicolor orchids and a high-definition print of Mat Collishaw’s striking butterfly wings against glazed black leather. Painter Ian Davenport imagined his series, Colorfall, as an amorphous rainbow in metallic leather, while artist Chris Martin brought his signature, graffiti-like painting style to the project. Daniel Gordon played on Dior’s cannage motif with various black and white sequins, embroidered leather and inlaid mink, while fellow New York-based creative Matthew Porter chose to immortalize his version with the streets of Los Angeles in a black, white, red and yellow photographic montage, pairing a palm-lined street scene with a shrunken model car suspended in midair (recalling the chase scene in Bullitt). All in all, the results are a graphic, textural display that transforms Lady Dior’s refined profile into contemporary statement pieces with artistic edge. The limited-edition collection is being unveiled in L.A. exclusively at a pop-up boutique on Rodeo Drive from December 1 through March 2017, before continuing on to London, China, Dubai and Paris. $360-$11,500, 201 N. American and Japanese denim line the shelves at GRATUS.

LOS ANGELES

BEVERLY HILLS

Designer Nili Lotan—favored by It girls like Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid—returns to her roots this season with the launch of her inaugural capsule collection, Nili Lotan Denim. After 10 years designing jeans in alternative fabrics like linen and cotton for her eponymous label, she’s embraced the classic denim with a refreshing, stylish twist. Four silhouettes made in L.A. using quality Japanese denim of varying weights and washes feature raw finishes and varied stages of distress—further cementing the brand’s fashion darling rep. Personal service still has its place thanks to Gratus—the Beverly Hills boutique marks its first anniversary this December, having established itself as an invaluable resource in concierge shopping and styling. Founder Meredith Kaplan and Buying Director Christine Moon balance impeccable service (house calls for closet consults are not out of the norm) with a standout selection of established designers, fresh talent, and even vintage picks to outfit clients. 427 N. Striking Gold Italian jewelry designer Marco Bicego celebrates a milestone this December: 15 years with Saks Fifth Avenue, the first major retailer to carry his collections. To commemorate the occasion, he’s created a limited-edition cuff that nods to his family lineage in the business, with 15 strands of hand-coiled 18-karat yellow gold—a signature technique passed down to him from his father—for a timeless piece of arm candy to take you through the holidays. Finer THINGS “My dream is to adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls,” said the late Kokichi Mikimoto, who propelled his vision with the founding of his eponymous cultured-pearl jewelry house, Mikimoto, back in 1893. The company features prominently in The Pearl Necklace (Assouline, $85), a luscious visual history of the bauble’s legacy in fine art and fashion through the centuries. Archival images from Mikimoto’s beginnings, one-of-a-kind pieces and vintage ad campaigns showcase the brand’s renown as the preeminent purveyor of fine strands. mikimotoamerica.com.

The Dark Side “A dark, strong lip with luminescent skin and darkened brows is a great look for holiday,” attests makeup visionary James Kaliardos, who created the mouthy visage for Pasadena-based Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s Fall 2016 show. “They understand beauty so well,” says Kaliardos, who founded the conceptual

multi-format publication Visionaire and has collaborated on campaigns and covers with the world’s most famous faces. Here, he explains how to achieve this punk pout: 1. Sharpen the Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu ($26) to a thick but pointy, precise tip so it glides on. 2. Fill in the center for full coverage and use Q-Tips to

roll around and soften the edge of the lip line so it goes from superdense color to a soft edge. (If Train Bleu is too dark, try Nars Audacious Lipstick in Charlotte, $32.) 3. Keeping eyes luminous and cheeks shiny adds to the strong message. [For runway] I darkened the brow with a tiny bit of mascara just on the hairs. narscosmetics.com. •

In-demand Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Gabriel Chiu (renowned for his range of customized cosmetic procedures) has an ingenious way of staying ahead of the curve when it comes to predicting his clients’ desires. In addition to keeping up with medical advances, he attends Paris Fashion Week with his wife, Christine, as a means of anticipating cosmetic trends that will be popular in the near future. On his radar? For men, “it’s chest contouring,” he says. “Currently, abdominal etching is more popular, but increasingly, men are looking for their ideal chest.” As for women, Chiu’s “Mommy-Makeover” tops the list: “It’s ultra-customized. We’ve added the waist trainer curve, which makes a nice addition to the Brazilian Butt Lift. Waist-cinching surgery involves liposculpting in a specialized manner to get the waist trainer look,” he says. “While most surgeons focus only on the butt, its shape and proportions to the waist above, and the thighs below, really bring it to the next level.” Chiu is relaunching his clinical institute in 2017, with the addition of antiaging and regenerative medicine. In development: oral and transdermal forms of antiaging medications. “Beauty and wellness are intimately attached. Maintenance, with skin care, a healthy diet, ongoing antiaging, and nonsurgical procedures, coupled with surgical procedures, will bring back this wellness/beauty balance, completing the cycle of beauty.” 9454 Wilshire Blvd., B.H., 310-888-8087; beverlyhillsplasticsurgeryinc.com.

“The idea to open a nontoxic nail salon came about when our co-founder, Tran Wills, was pregnant and couldn’t find a place to get her nails done that didn’t make her sick from all the intense smells and harsh chemicals,” explains Base Coat’s Ali Elman, part of the founding trio, along with Sarah Simon, who opened the brand’s first outpost in Denver in 2013. Now the salon has brought that same wellness-driven philosophy to L.A. with the opening of a spacious flagship in Downtown L.A.’s Arts District. A treatment menu based on the brand’s namesake line of vegan, chemical- and cruelty-free polishes in 100 colors stays true to a commitment to health and relaxation, as does an in-house bar that turns out fresh juices, mocktails, teas and tonics. I love burgundy mixed with pale pinks and neutral tones.” Before dinner, LeBlanc, Sims’ go-to gift source, guided the guests through wreath making. Eastern Promise Kenzo and Natsuko TSUJIMOTO’S new restaurant, KENZO, brings authentic Asian hospitality to WINE COUNTRY WINTER 2016/2017 C 115

MENU

Japanese-influenced menus have long been popular in Northern California, but with the opening of the 27-seat Edomai sushi and kaiseki restaurant Kenzo in downtown Napa this November, vintnersturned-restaurateurs Kenzo Tsujimoto and his wife, Natsuko, want guests to feel as if they’ve been transported straight to Tokyo. “Margrit Mondavi, who was a great friend, had words [that] inspired me to open this Japanese restaurant in the place we both loved so much,” says Kenzo. “She said, ‘If someone could open a truly authentic Japanese restaurant in Napa, it would be you.’ Her words meant a lot.” Kenzo, who is founder and CEO of Japanese games developer Capcom, bought 3,800 acres on the slopes of Napa’s Mount George for his winery Kenzo Estate in 1990 and has since established four Kenzo Estate tasting room-cum-restaurants in Japan. To open his eponymous restaurant in Napa, Kenzo brought on longtime friend Hiroyuki Kanda—whose signature kaiseki restaurant, Kanda, in Minato, Tokyo, has received three Michelin stars for the past nine years—as executive chef to develop menus and train the all-star culinary team, which includes the former executive chefs from two-star Kyoto restaurant Kikunoi and Kenzo’s Japan-based operations. Dishes such as wagyu sukiyaki and snow crab and scallop shinjo combine Napa produce and ingredients flown in daily from Japan’s markets at their syun, or seasonal peak.

Menu (turn) From above: The private sushi counter. Fig and tofu shirae. Owners KENZO and NATSUKO TSUJIMOTO.

“In Japanese cuisine, it is important to respect the natural flavor of each ingredient, and by cooking and combining them, to enhance the flavor further. For sushi, it is fair to say that the quality of ingredients themselves is everything, so I assemble recipes according to the time of year and the most exquisite, delicate and flavorful ingredients available,” says Kanda. Natsuko designed the dining room and seven-seat private room using only materials and products that were made in Japan. Arita-yaki, Imari-yaki and Kyo-yaki ceramics were sourced to complement the presentation of each dish; every piece of wood has been hand-tooled in Japan and shipped to Napa to be installed locally under the supervision of Japanese artisans. “Even though the restaurant is in Napa, our guests will feel as if they are entering Japan when they step inside. While it has taken two years to physically create the restaurant, Kenzo and I have thought about it for many, many more,” says Natsuko. 1339 Pearl St., Napa, 707-294-2049; kenzoestate.com. • GEMMA PRICE

Stir It Up

While most people prefer their caviar on blinis or toast, Sarah Meyer Michaelson has different plans this season. “My family does one big dinner over the holidays. We have this tradition where we eat caviar on baked potatoes,” says the L.A. native, who, along with her college roommate and fellow caviar aficionado Daniel Landver, launched Roe Caviar in November 2015 in a bid to make the edible luxury more approachable and accessible. “When we started buying caviar for ourselves, we were struck by how complicated and confusing and almost overwhelming the process was,” explains Landver. After sampling caviar from 18 sources all over the world, the duo landed on a sustainable farm in Northern California.

Menu (bits)

When Sarah Michelle Gellar’s two children showed a particular interest in baking, the actor was surprised to find that the products on the shelves did not match their enthusiasm—they were filled with terrible ingredients. So, she got together with her best friend and fellow mother Galit Laibow, and launched Foodstirs (foodstirs.com), a collection of USDA organic, GMO-free baking kits and mixes. Here, the Westsider shares a few of her favorite spots around L.A. • Farmshop I love the farmers eggs and mushrooms and their bacon cheddar scones for brunch. 225 26th St., Ste. 25, S.M., 310-566-2400; farmshopca.com. • Grace Home Furnishings For a small store they carry such a wide and eclectic stock of furnishings and if they don’t have [what you’re looking for], I guarantee they have someone who can make it. 11632 Barrington Ct., L.A., 310-476-7176; gracehome furnishings.com. • Mier Gallery Owner Nino Mier always finds the greatest artists. FOODSTIRS co-founders Galit Laibow and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

“We work very closely with them to ensure every tin of Roe meets our exacting quality standards. No preservatives, no freezing,” says Meyer Michaelson. Each tin of the brand’s single-origin white sturgeon eggs is artfully presented in a custom box and outfitted with an accompanying traditional motherof-pearl spoon and key to open. Just in time for the holidays, the brand has introduced 30-gram ($100) and 50-gram ($150) gift sets, in addition to the 125-gram ($350) and 250gram ($695) Indulge boxes already on offer year-round. Meanwhile, Landver has even more good reason to indulge in the delicacy this season. “I happen to be getting married soon,” he says. An excuse to feast if ever there was one. roecaviar.com.

A lush playground in Kaikoura, the 11room Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses (hapuku lodge.com) perches in a native kanuka grove, with mountain and ocean views. Five tree houses offer whimsical luxury in a natural retreat, where you can laze all day, staring out giant windows. All levels of surfers will want to see—or master—Mangamaunu, one of New Zealand’s most epic longboard spots. There’s no better place to count sheep than in one of the 22 suites at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers (capekidnappers.com) in Hawkes Bay. A working farm with 6,000 glorious acres overlooks the ocean on a series of dramatic cliffs draped in worldclass golf greens, near New Zealand’s oldest vineyard, Mission Estate Winery. Slow down for wine on the South Island’s northeastern tip, and take time to visit the sprawling region that is flanked by the ocean and produces the country’s famous sauvignon blanc. The Marlborough Lodge (the marlboroughlodge.co.nz), a historic convent turned new, all-suite hotel, amps up the elegance and focuses on the food and wine experience—serving farm-to-table bites and sea treats like fresh oysters and New Zealand Greenshell Mussels. • MARTINE BURY

CULTURE

“This is a period that has gotten a short shrift in history,” notes Lawrence Rinder, director of the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, about “Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia.” The upcoming exhibition is a compelling look at how the counterculture has influenced art, architecture, design and contemporary life. Rinder, also chief curator, and Greg Castillo, Berkeley associate professor of architecture, have added nearly 100 pieces to the showcase, a traveling exhibition organized by the Walker Art Center with the assistance of BAMPFA.

This expanded collection highlights the Bay Area’s key role in the movement through diverse pieces like ephemera and photographs from ’70s theater groups Angels of Light and the Cockettes—sexual anarchists who epitomized the Psychedelic ’60s with their raucous performances and inspired glam rock; prints of East Bay handmade homes and Emeryville Mudflats, famously known at the time for its displays of public art; and even an original Community Memory Terminal from 1973, “which might have been the first digital social network, inside a cardboard box on Telegraph

Avenue,” Rinder says, gleefully. It’s particularly timely that the Bay Area turns reflective. “Today, here, counterculture has become the culture. You look at environmental standards, the fact that everyone recycles and it’s the law; advances in women’s, LGBT and civil rights—you take these things for granted, but you can draw a line directly back to counterculture,” Rinder points out. “There are certain things that maybe we’ve left behind and deserve a second look.” Feb. 8-May 21. 2155 Center St., Berkeley, 510-642-0808; bampfa .org. • ELIZABETH KHURI CHANDLER

PHILLIP K. SMITH III’s Bent Parallel, 2014, is composed of glass, aluminum, LED lighting and custom electronics.

LAGUNA BEACH

Bright Idea Palm Desert-based artist Phillip K. Smith III explores perception, space and time in his bold light-based oeuvre. On view at the Laguna Art Museum, his installation Bent Parallel blends outsize walls of color to dazzling and illusory effect (through Jan. 15; lagunaartmuseum.org). Up next: an installation for Desert X (Feb. 25-April 30, desertx.org), Coachella Valley’s inaugural,

site-specific exhibition. We caught up with the master of optics. How do you view the artist’s role in society? To change people’s perceptions of the world around them. To allow people to break out of their own way of thinking. To open people’s senses to the beauty, energy and subtlety of the world. Favorite medium? Anything translucent. Translucency creates a kind of mystery of light and has the ability to make light physical—the feeling that you can pick it up and hold it. Who would you like to collaborate with? James Turrell, Robert Irwin and the Dan Flavin estate—at the Colosseum in Rome. What can you tell us about your Desert X installation? I’m thinking that I will be reconfiguring ¼ Mile Arc [Smith’s large-scale outdoor installation artwork commissioned by Laguna Art Museum] to create a composition that will take place in the middle of the desert as opposed to the ocean versus land. It’s a 360-degree experience. What can you not live without? A pen and a piece of paper. Every single project I have ever made begins with a piece of paper and a pen. pks3.com. • GABÉ HIRSCHOWITZ

The DESIGN and ART markets forge ahead together at SAN FRANCISCO’S fourth annual FOG FAIR

C 130 WINTER 2016/2017

This January, FOG Design+Art Fair continues its fruitful evolution with the most sophisticated gathering of dealers since it began three years ago. Divided equally between the design and art galleries, the fair housed at Fort Mason Festival Pavilion includes new showings from galleries such as Chicago’s institution-cum-design gallery Casati, the Gagosian Gallery, New York’s dependably provocative Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, and influential European grande dame Dominique Lévy. Lévy chose to join the fair after visiting last year, citing “the energy and support of collectors” and the city’s “long-standing interest in modern and contemporary art.” Her booth will present artists from the gallery’s program as well as a staging of Yves Klein’s iconic Monotone Symphony at Grace Cathedral to coincide with the fair. “The art market here is thriving,” says Douglas Durkin, chair of the steering committee. “With the advent of BAMPFA and SFMOMA’s expansion, artist districts such as Minnesota Street, the Gagosian opening…people have confidence in the area.” In addition to the galleries, the fair includes a lecture on photographer Trevor Paglen’s off-site performance piece with the Kronos Quartet, a pop-up installation from renowned event designer Stanlee Gatti, and a curated reading room. For serious art and design buffs, everything from Sheila Hicks prayer rugs from Demisch Danant to Zaha Hadid’s spectacular glass consuls fashioned for David Gill, and classics such as a Richard Neutra drawing from Edward Cella are sure to beckon. PACE will also present Studio Drift, an artist group that pushes the boundaries between art and technology, and S.F. gallery Altman Siegel is showing graphic abstractions of quilt patterns by photography artist Sara VanDerBeek. “There is anticipation that the younger demographic is more interested in the arts,” says Durkin. “We’re truly becoming a platform for seasoned collectors and enthusiasts to see art and design under one roof.” Jan. 12-15. Leading the PACK The buzz is high for Emily Fridlund’s debut novel, History of Wolves (Grove Atlantic, $25), a book that impresses and shocks with its unabashedly odd and refreshingly crisp coming-of-age story. Set in the woods of northern Minnesota, 14-year-old Linda lives with her hippie parents in an abandoned commune, babysits for the Christian Scientist neighbor’s son, and becomes obsessed with fellow classmate Lily, who perhaps has an inappropriate relationship with her eighth-grade teacher. USC Ph.D. grad Fridlund toys with motifs of good and evil, predator and prey and observation versus action, deftly. And the consequences are unyielding.

The Enlightened Impresario We asked curator Kristy Edmunds, executive and artistic director of UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance, to detail the ingredients in her special programming sauce. How does your diverse background in the arts inform your choices? I approach being an artistic director with a great amount of empathy for artists’ thinking practices: What fires their creativity and what preoccupies their obsessions? How do I then make sure that I’m traveling as close as I can to that journey? Standout performance you’re looking forward to this winter? Forced Entertainment’s Table Top Shakespeare (Dec. 6-11). It’s all 36 Shakespearean plays done in the form of a single actor sitting at a long table synthesizing the entire play… boiling it down to the essentials and using objects you can go buy at the local drugstore. How does L.A. differ from other places you’ve worked in the world? I think there’s a real convergence of people in administrative leadership who have led very creative lives actively championing artists around the world. We recognize that while we have our institution, we have to look after the arts ecology in the whole city—because looking after L.A.’s art ecology touches the whole world. cap.ucla.edu. Elle Fanning wants you to know that she is 18. “Did I already say that I turned 18?” she asks. She did. Twice. “Whenever I see someone I tell them right away that I turned 18. It’s like it has never happened to anyone else,” she says, and she laughs a big, goofy 18-year-old laugh. The younger Fanning (sister Dakota is now 22) is officially an adult. And no one can blame her for being excited to retire the line “child actor,” two words that bear the weight of baggage from misspent youths and wayward souls, from her résumé. On set for this shoot at the historic Paramour Estate in Silver Lake, a long day spent pouring her lanky 5-foot-9-inch frame into a collection of very glamorous gowns, she is gracious and grounded, silly and smart. Back in her civilian clothes, a white Vivetta minidress and Gucci loafers with pearlencrusted heels, her pale hair twisted into a topknot, she looks and acts every bit the

hasn’t made one] because of her desire to seek out challenging and unique material more than anything. But I also think she has something otherworldly and ethereal about her, which doesn’t always go hand in hand with your typical Urban Dictionarydialogue teenage fare.” Fanning relishes the chance to play a little against type, as a model/ ingenue turned violent narcissist in recently released film The Neon Demon from director Nicolas Winding Refn, a promiscuous but deviously smart best friend in December’s 20th Century Women, or the sweet-yetnaive daughter of a Tampa police chief in the 1920s Prohibition-era crime thriller and Christmas Day release Live by Night, alongside Zoe Saldana, Sienna Miller and the film’s star and director, Ben Affleck. It’s hard to believe that someone capable of such emotional range, who is in clear command of her talent, spends her free time practicing applying eyeliner and hanging out with friends at a bowling alley near her parents’ house in the San Fernando Valley, and celebrated turning legal voting age by dyeing her hair pink and making her Instagram public. “Well, my parents never let me have a Facebook account,” she says. “And I had a private Instagram, but I was always a little intimidated by it. I have never had a Twitter account. People just argue on Twitter and I want to stay away. I guess I like Instagram because I’m a visual person. If I do go back to school one day, which I think I will, it will be for photography.” The college question—will she go or won’t she—is the second-most asked of Fanning these days, right after people quiz her about what it was like to have such an unusual childhood. “It all feels very normal to me. I’ve always been on movie sets, and I have learned so much. I really hope to be a director one day, to feel so free to invent stuff,” she says looking wistful and full of wonder and, for this minute, more girl than woman. “To have something that’s mine, my own thing that I pour myself into, that’s my dream.” •

part of a teenager with an exceptional job, an interesting paradox of esteemed professional and a young woman who stayed a child for as long as she possibly could. “I graduated from a regular high school. Even if I had to take a week or two off, I had a tutor and I was expected to keep up. But now I can travel on my own, without my grandmother or my mom. I’m headed to New Orleans soon to work with Sofia Coppola again,” says Fanning, who first worked with the filmmaker while starring in her melancholy indie drama Somewhere (2010). She grew up in Los Angeles but has deep family roots in Georgia, where her parents met when they were 7 and 10 years old. “It’s the first time I’m going to be on set without any schoolwork. Plus, I will be in New Orleans. Most of my friends moved away for college, and this kind of feels like my version of that.” The second-born of the famous Fannings booked her first job playing the younger version of her sister, Dakota (she was just

C 144 WINTER 2016/2017

shy of 3 at the time), in I Am Sam. She had acted in 10 movies and a handful of television series by the time she was 10. Fanning was an adorable girl with a gift for behaving like an actual child on screen, in big serious pictures like Babel and The Door in the Floor, who has blossomed into a fashion darling, wearing Chanel and Gucci and Valentino on red carpets around the world. And she has done it, remarkably, without ever standing in front of a locker on camera. “It’s weird but I’ve never played a part when I’m in a high school,” she says, somewhat incredulously. “In the new Mike Mills movie, 20th Century Women, I play a girl who goes to high school in the late ’70s in Santa Barbara, but I have never, you know, stood in the hall of a school, doing high school things.” “I’m pretty sure Elle could be cast in any teen movie she wanted,” says writer and director Daniel Barnz, who put Fanning in her first lead role in his film Phoebe in Wonderland when she was 9. “I suspect [she

With the sort of backstory that (tbd) proves truth is more FASCINATING than fiction, a RUSTIC CANYON HOUSE

is brought back to life by ITS DEVOTED OWNERS

The stones from the original fireplace were numbered, dismantled and reconstructed in the process of MARLA AND LARRY BUTLER’s extensive remodel. INTERIOR STYLING BY LISA STRONG. ARCHITECTURE/DESIGN COLLABORATION BY CHRIS PECK AND ERIC DOBKIN. CONSTRUCTION BY ERIC DOBKIN

Clockwise from left: In the airy dining area, the granite floors are leather finished, and Bell Lamp pendants by NORMANN COPENHAGEN hang over the custom ELIZABETH PAIGE SMITH table— composed of surfboard resin over maple. In the kids’ bathroom, a wall sconce from ONEFORTYTHREE in Henderson, Nev., hangs above a KOHLER trough sink. Custom leathered limestone tile from KD STYLE & CO. dots the floor. The kitchen contains basalt countertops and a Calacatta marble backsplash. A new rear addition to the original blueprint encompasses the kitchen, dining room and second-floor bedrooms.

“Take an old knife that’s nicked up but still totally functional,” says Larry Butler by way of explaining the immediate allure of his house in Rustic Canyon. “You love it because it’s been used and has a history; the cabin was filled with that.” It was also, when he first laid eyes on it, in 1999, “quasi falling apart—which to most people wouldn’t be appealing, but to me, and later on to my wife, it was something that was attractive,” he says. “We don’t like anything perfect.” Larry, who runs his own investment company, was a bachelor renting a place nearby when he purchased the digs from actor Daryl Hannah. An absorbing backstory helped to seal the deal: Built for the 1923 silent film The Courtship of Miles Standish, the place was first owned by banker Marco Hellman, who foreclosed on the movie’s production company, and moved the stage set to its current locale, hiring Craftsman architect Arthur Heineman to convert it to a family beach house. It stood on the grounds of a 121-acre compound that was being developed as a

bohemian gentleman’s retreat by pipe company owner Harry Haldeman, who christened it The Uplifters Club. Hellman’s cabin became a hangout for the fabled membersonly Uplifters clan, which included the likes of Walt Disney, Clark Gable, Will Rogers and Spencer Tracy. Steeped though it was in romance, the cabin was a victim of structural, earthquake and termite damage. It wasn’t until 2012 that Larry, now married to his wife, Marla (with whom he has three children: daughter Folbe, 10, and sons Joshua and Marshall, who are 8 and 6, respectively), decided to finally commit to the project of remodeling, and assembled an expert team: architect Chris Peck, interior designer Lisa Strong and contractor Eric Dobkin, who fought to preserve the integrity of the site. “Though double the size of the original, it was as similar as possible in tone and spirit,” says Larry, who approved the plans for the 6,200-square-foot remodel with neighborhood historian Randy Young. “The aim was

to retain authenticity without intentionally deceiving the visitor with respect to what is new and what is historic material,” adds Peck. Dobkin sourced materials from Bitterroot Valley Log & Timber Inc. in Victor, Mont.;

The grand living room features many restored original accents including paper shade pendants, mica shades, and a barrel chair and table. importing and storing the lodgepole pine logs in locations across Los Angeles and transferring them to smaller trucks for delivery to the site. For the great room, an ardent replica of the original, the stones of the fireplace were meticulously dismantled, numbered and later reassembled, along with a salvaged and restored inglenook that stands on reclaimed French oak floors. They also preserved original furniture and architectural elements throughout, including an eightpanel oil mural and the double Dutch front door. “Reusing the original wood beams, hardware, light fixtures and stone makes you feel the memory of Haldeman and his drinking buddies,” says Dobkin. The interiors are an enthusiastic mashup of old and new. “I need to live with contrast,” says Marla, a former fashion designer. “I never want anything too ‘too.’” Strong characterizes the aesthetic as “Dutch lowlands Death Star,” citing the mix of modern furniture and the moody interplay of dark wood alongside vintage Italian and French pieces and family heirlooms. “It has a little couture element to it too, because Marla is very refined,” she adds. Marla likens her design instincts to ac-

In the playroom, a vibrant

And a vignette in the entry hall pairs an elk footstool original to the cabin with a chinoiserie table previously owned by Larry’s mother, a custom Chinese birdcage lamp and a bespoke pentagonal light fixture composed of pressed glass and brass with leather piping. Whimsical though the current incarnation may be, the house retains its DNA as a gathering place, first and foremost. “It’s incredibly cozy,” says Larry. “My memories will be of making s’mores in the fireplace with the kids, and having parties in the great room.” •

The upstairs landing features a pair of MILO BAUGHMAN club chairs, a purple glass side table from L.A.’s IN-EX, a VISUAL COMFORTS light fixture, and a custom hand-hooked area rug made of men’s wool and cashmere suiting fabrics from COUNTRY BRAID HOUSE in New Hampshire. Motor to Moon Mountain, a mere 10 minutes past the town square of Sonoma, and you’ll find that the road narrows quickly and branches close in. Then, suddenly, you break away from the trees into an uninterrupted, sweeping, patchwork view of water and farmland layered all the way to the city blocks of San Francisco. Just beyond that view, past a grove of old-growth oak trees, you’ll find Andrew Mariani and Lia Ices’ one-bedroom home, humbly squeezed next to a particularly spectacular specimen. “The architect basically built the house to be next to this oak tree,” says Mariani.

C 168 WINTER 2016/2017

This afternoon the founder of Scribe Winery and his musician wife are just getting moving. Dewy-eyed, Ices emerges from the bedroom, dressed simply in a coral shift and luminous as she cradles their newest addition, 6-week-old Una, in her arms (she was named after Una Jeffers, wife and muse of bohemian California poet Robinson Jeffers). Meanwhile Scribe staffers Meredith Ouzounian and Emma Lipp are ensconced in the kitchen whipping up casual fare, all seasonal and almost all plucked from the Scribe garden, which, from one vantage point, can be spotted down in the valley.

“It’s nice to get off the Scribe property and get a little serenity from the hustle and bustle of the seven-days-a-week business of making wine,” explains Mariani of the remoteness of their location. Life is very busy down at the winery. In addition to the 250-acre property’s original tasting room, the winery is opening a restored historic hacienda in January, complete with a rotation of visiting chefs run by Lipp, Ouzounian, and Mariani’s sister, Kelly—think small plates, farm-to-table, classically West Coast fare. The retreat, which the two moved to in October 2015, has everything they desired:

Clockwise from far left: Chef MEREDITH OUZOUNIAN preps grilled vegetables. Ices wears a shift dress by FARROW and a LADY GREY necklace. A bottle of SAMUEL TINON’S HATARI DRY TOKAJ FURMINT 2013 and SCRIBE’s 2016 NOUVEAU OF PINOT NOIR. Halibut is wrapped in fig leaves. Ices and Mariani with their newborn daughter, Una. Scribe employees Jessica DellaTorre and Penelope Grill enjoy a glass of wine. A bowl of persimmons from Mariani’s family property in Winters. Salad with watermelon radish and flowers from the Scribe garden. Raspberry clafouti made with Mariani walnuts. Guests gather in the kitchen in front of the oaks.

winsome groves of oaks; an orchard filled with apple, fig, pomegranate, plum and cherry trees; a fulsome rose garden; a patio with an outdoor dining area and grill; even a guesthouse that doubles as a music studio for Ices’ self-proclaimed “introspective pop.” She’s currently working on a new album: a California record, she says, that’s a “stripping away of things, an experiment into what naturally comes out.” When the couple entertains, “the motto is: Get everybody involved,” proclaims Mariani, who comes from a family of farmers that goes back four generations. “Pour wine, hold babies, grow shallots, grill.” By noon their guests have all trickled in, an eclectic group of musicians, vintners, engineers, Scribe employees and writers from both coasts (Ices is a Connecticut native, while Mariani grew up in Winters, CA). Musician Sasha Papadin and his wife, Lauren, arrive with their two kids, who immediately bolt for the orchard; Mariani’s brother Adam (who co-runs the winery) and his South African girlfriend Kezia McKay walk leisurely through the oaks; Colu Henry, a Hudson Valley-based food writer and publicist, sweeps into the kitchen wearing a pretty patterned dress and bubbling over with questions. Mariani and Ices offer a cloudy pink Scribe Nouveau of Pinot Noir to their friends along with Bas de Bas Blanc from Croatia, a Scribe Cabernet, Methode Sau-

rest of the group clambers behind the car, up to the view, wineglasses in hand. Ices and Mariani trade off with the wee one and the crowd takes it all in. Finally they call their friends to the table under a canopy of purple and translucent table grapes that Ices jokes she snacked on all through her pregnancy. The table is set with their wedding china by Jan Schachter and vases from Oakland ceramist Jessica Niello, who used clay from the Scribe property and fired it into vessels that Ices loves because they “look like meteors.” Zinnias from the Scribe garden and toyon berries from Moon Mountain fill the containers, and a few gourds and pomegranates are scattered about for color. Then Lipp comes out of the kitchen wearing a charming, floppy farmer hat and presents the dishes. The diners begin with mozzarella grilled in lemon leaves, Continued on p.174

inspired by Mariani and Ices’ babymoon in Capri, paired with grilled bread, garden tomato confit and basil. Then they sample grilled halibut wrapped in fig leaves with a tomato-fennel-scallion salsa. A garden salad is passed from hand to hand with watermelon radishes and flowers, followed by Scribe peppers and eggplant with herbs, roasted beets with avocado crema, and a finish of a not-too-sweet walnut and raspberry clafouti with a dollop of cream. Conversation flits between career plans, baby names and a little shoptalk about the winery. The guests toast the chefs and marvel at the avocado crema—delicious!— inquiring after the biographies of the greens in the salad. As the meal meanders to a close, the light begins to turn golden and various guests wander into the orchard below, crushing rosemary between their thumbs and biting into Fuji apples fresh from the tree. Henry jokes that they are on a scent tour. It’s business as usual here, really, yet every moment stands out; rose-tinted perhaps—special. •

“I feel like there is some sort of vortex in Joshua Tree,” says Jen Rossi, designer behind beachy bohemian label Jen’s Pirate Booty (jenspiratebooty.com)—beloved by Victoria’s Secret Angels Behati Prinsloo and Candice Swanepoel. “There is an undeniable energy that attracts many different walks of life.” This magnetism is what prompted the Malibu native and mother of three to open the doors to her decade-old brand’s inaugural storefront in the desert community this winter, just in time for festival season (61729 Twentynine Palms Hwy., Joshua Tree). Here, her local haunts. • Joshua Tree National Park A morning hike is always a wonderful way to start the day. I also love to camp here under the moon and stars. nps.gov/jotr. • Integratron The Sound Bath is quite an experience. There are so many stories and myths surrounding it; go see, learn, listen and feel for yourself. integratron.com. • Joshua Tree Coffee Company Get one of their nitro cold-brewed coffees and make sure to ask them to spike it with their creamy coconut milk. jtcoffeeco.com. • 29 Palms Inn It’s eclectic and has a really great vibe. Lay poolside under the desert sun and sip on one of their specialty cocktails. 29palmsinn.com. • Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace It’s a super rustic, old-timey saloon. You will meet every walk of life there and the setting is one of a kind. If you’re there at the right time, you may be lucky enough to catch one of your favorite musicians on open mic night. pappyandharriets.com.

“I like that I don’t have an official title,” says L.A. native Olivia Perez, on the phone from her adoptive home of New York City. It’s a byproduct of forging one’s own path in the digital sphere, something the 22-year-old—one of five sisters born to creative parents (her father worked in the fashion industry and her mom is a photographer)—has tirelessly pursued since enrolling in NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study four years ago. Following internships for the likes of Teen Vogue and Hermès, the then-junior launched Friend of a Friend, an online lifestyle publication that taps Perez’s extensive bicoastal network of friends for their word-of-mouth city recs, as well as insider tips from fashion to travel and beauty. “I wanted to provide a platform to spotlight these amazing people I was meeting,” says Perez, who is also inspired by close childhood pals Gigi and Bella Hadid. “Their career trajectories have been absolutely incredible—they have really set the bar high for women around the world who want to make a mark in the [fashion] industry and be humble at the same time.” The bright-eyed millennial, who serves as the site’s editor-inchief and also works in fashion partnerships for shopping app Spring, is up for the challenge, even using the ever-changing digital media industry as an incentive: “It’s really fun to not have a road map and not set limits for myself,” she says. “The worst thing anybody could ever do is put a ceiling over me.” frndofafrnd.com. • LINDSAY KINDELON
