FOUNDER’S LETTER

If you live in a state where the climate doesn’t veer dramatically from summery temperatures year-round, how does one define said season in a sartorial way? How does one live differently during these months to really maximize them, compared to, say, a perfect 75-degree January day? That’s where C comes in. This issue is full of what’s new and what’s happening with the best of what to wear to all of your summer soirees, beach bonfires and poolside picnics. For a glimpse into what it truly means to be a Californian in summer, turn to our fashion feature starring L.A.’s newest generation of social-media savvy teens (watch out, Jenners and Hadids!). Juggling choice summer internships with the likes of Annie Leibovitz and forming healthy-living lifestyle brands and YouTube channels, all while balancing school and, for some, the SATs (which Bella Giannulli and Abby Smidt finished just before our shoot), these homegrown talents are ready to take on the world. Speaking of brains and beauty, another young ingenue making her mark on our issue is cover subject Mia Wasikowska, star of Alice Through the Looking Glass. Since her breakout role in HBO’s In Treatment at age 17, this Australian talent has continued to dazzle with her raw performances and on-screen presence. We present Mia in this season’s prettiest frocks, with a dash of punk to keep it fresh and unexpected. We love to keep people guessing. When you think of quintessential summer ensembles, sparkles and embellishments on the beach might not come to mind. But one look at our fashion portfolio, shot by photographer Jan Welters and styled by our amazing new fashion director, Alison Edmond, and the surprising combinations clearly work to perfection. I am very excited to have Alison on board. Not only is she renowned in the editorial and styling worlds, having made her mark at the likes of Vogue UK, both British and U.S. Harper’s Bazaar as well as Marie Claire, she is an absolute joy to have on our team. One of the best parts of this season is the entertaining opportunities it presents. Friends drop by for barbecues, or rosé by the pool; long brunches roll into late afternoon. Here, we bring you two homes that practically beg to host parties. Vanessa Alexander’s house in Malibu’s Point Dume is in an eternal summer state with its indoor/outdoor footprint. Different in style, but similar in its sunny attitude is a Jay Jeffers-designed retreat in St. Helena, complete with all the accoutrements you would expect of a dream home and just a stone’s throw from Napa Valley’s most illustrious vineyards. I believe in making a big, celebratory deal of these three months: Go for that beach walk, ride your bike to work (even if it takes you a little longer), stop by the winery you always wanted to visit, or flag down the ice-cream truck for your childhood favorite. Live the golden life in our Golden State, every day.

HOLT AND HERO SHOP: THAYER ALLYSON GOWDY

“I’m not one of those Californians who was always trying to get back here,” insists Los Gatos native and former Vogue editor Emily Holt. But after 12 years in New York chronicling the fashion industry, Holt, 38, grew restless and, to her own surprise, realized San Francisco was the ideal market for a long-percolating dream: to open her own store. She decamped to S.F. in June 2014 to lay the groundwork for Hero Shop, slated to open in July and featuring interiors by Laurel & Wolf. Similar to The Webster in Miami or Forty Five Ten in Dallas, she says, “It has fashion, but it has things that relate to culture and travel, too.” The Tenderloin location is surrounded by destination neighbors such as Jay Jeffers’ boutique and Mr. Holmes Bakehouse, and high-profile forthcoming projects, including a restaurant from the team behind Spruce and a gourmet market by noted event planner Stanlee Gatti. Holt has curated a mix that spans a Modernism-inspired dress from Creatures of the Wind to an onyx oyster cuff from Sophie Buhai, emphasizing American and, in particular, local brands including handcrafted bag line Future Glory Co. “The vibe is put-together, even if that’s a white T-shirt and a pair of Levi’s and Vans,” Holt says. As for the project’s name, the Ocean Beach-based Holt cites a Brooklyn sandwich shop as her muse: “I passed a faceless deli that said ‘Hero Shop’ on the awning, and I was like, ‘Oh! There [are] all kinds of ways you can spin it,’” she says. “Ordinary people become superheroes by changing their clothes.” 982 Post St., S.F., heroshopsf.com. • MELISSA GOLDSTEIN

From shooting ad campaigns to creating in-store playlists, these days, designers do more than just runway collections. Tomas Maier, who rings in his 15th year as Bottega Veneta’s creative director this summer, now also moonlights as an architect. “From a young age I have been engaged in all aspects of design,” says Maier, who conceptualized every inch of the brand’s gleaming new maison on Rodeo Drive— not to mention all the items inside. Maier, who grew up in Germany (his father was an architect), is able to rattle off a glossary of architectural inspirations as if this were his primary field: the teachings of Italian Renaissance expert Andrea Palladio, Mediterranean Revival masterpieces near his home in Palm Beach, and his muses for the Beverly Hills location: George Washington Smith, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and Lutah Maria Riggs. This maison (Maier unveiled one in Milan in 2013 and a New York outpost is in the works) has been a long-term research project: “I’ve been visiting California for

over 30 years, once or twice a year, and have always had a strong personal connection with the place,” he says. Reference books have been collected from Arcana in Culver City, and site visits were made to famous estates in Montecito and Pasadena. “My approach was a modern take on the vision these gifted architects contributed to the California aesthetic,” Maier says. The result is a Mediterranean tinge on Maier’s signature pared-down approach: arched doorways, an earthy color palette and imported stone floors. URBAN Renewal WH (bits) As a stylist for pop stars such as Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez, Andrea Lieberman traveled the world with trunks of extravagant gowns and costumes. Yet, when the time came to launch a fashion line nearly nine years ago, she mined the contents of her own suitcase for inspiration. “I wanted my company to represent me and what was in my bag more than what was in those big fancy trunks,” she says. Hence, when A.L.C. (Andrea Lieberman Collection) debuted in 2008, those expecting red carpet “wow” pieces— after all, Lieberman was the mastermind behind J.Lo’s infamous Versace look at the 2000 Grammys—found, instead, a collection of pared-down staples that spoke to women with a luxurious yet laid-back sensibility and ease (and, not incidentally, well-traveled). “The A.L.C. woman loves fashion, but she doesn’t live and die by it,” says Lieberman, whose Fall 2016 collection centers on layer-friendly pieces including

After a stint at Parsons School of Design, she stumbled into styling and eventually followed her work to L.A. in 2006. “It was like I surfed a wave that just kept going.” These days, however, she spends her time on more solid ground—namely, an airy Downtown studio complete with a yoga/meditation space. “I drop my daughter at the school bus at 7:15 a.m. and then come here and meditate for 20 minutes,” says Lieberman, who is currently building a home in Santa Monica with her husband, photographer Vincent Passeri, and their two children, daughter Paloma, 7, and son, Leonardo, 5. Still, she sees a parallel between her jet-setting past and more grounded present: “Ultimately I think that everything we do here is a journey.” •

Last year, the Los Angeles-based designer, whose line is carried by top retailers including Barneys New York, Saks Fifth Avenue and Intermix, went into expansion mode, partnering with New York investment firm InterLuxe, and recruiting a company president, seasoned fashion exec Jonathan Saven. Lieberman also hints at potential e-commerce and brick-and-mortar plays. “We’re at the point where we want to engage our tribe and tell our own story.” Lieberman’s story, meanwhile, goes something like this: Born in the Bronx, and raised in upstate New York and then Manhattan, she discovered fashion in her teens,

“I have an old bus that I’ve converted into an RV and am looking forward to taking that around Northern California,” says Roman Coppola of his impending summer plans. The director, screenwriter and producer, who splits his time between a city home in S.F. and a summer residence in Napa Valley, is also behind the two-year-old Pacific Tote Company proffering colorful beach bags named after his favorite pit stops along the coast (Big Sur and Zuma Beach, for example). JAN WELTERS

She’s So FineFashion (opener) Launched just over 10 years ago in London, former stylist Lucy Pinter’s denim label Superfine sparked the trend for skinny jeans that we now all take for granted—setting the tone for the chilled-out, rock-chick silhouette with which she is now synonymous. Looking to expand her line stateside, Pinter, a native Australian, moved to L.A. with her photographer husband Jan Welters and their children two years ago, propelling the brand’s recently debuted e-commerce platform and new secondary range, Fine by Superfine. The extension features a contemporary mix of pared-down sweats, denim and tees that effortlessly complement the main line’s Spring/ Summer 2016 collection of luxuriously crafted tailored jackets, graphic leather pieces, dresses, and pinstriped and tartan separates—proving Pinter has that crucial instinct for what women want, now. Think of her as the West Coast’s answer to Haider Ackermann, offering that masculine touch with an accessible, feminine appeal. superfinelondon.com. •

From her flawless, honey-hued complexion to her bikini-ready frame, Malibu-based swimwear designer, model and mom Tori Praver-Fuller dishes on her summerlong beauty secrets: MAKEUP I have used Éminence Organic Skin Care (eminenceorganics .com .com) sunscreen powder for years! It comes in a stick, which makes it so easy to apply over your makeup and gives you extra sun coverage. I am loving Beautycounter (beautycounter.com (beautycounter.com) tinted moisturizer and foundation as well—easy and light for the summer. SUN CARE I love all EltaMD (eltamd.com) products; they have great moisturizers with SPF. Every morning I wash my face and then apply the Elta. INDULGE I get a mani/pedi once a week at Olive & June (olivejune.com). There is nothing worse to me than chipped polish! I also get an eyebrow wax every two weeks at Anastasia Beverly Hills (anastasiabeverlyhills .com); Tina is the best and I have been seeing her for years. WORKOUT I love Malibu Beach Yoga (malibubeachyoga.com). Especially hot yoga—it feels so good to sweat! I do it about three times a week. And then, depending on if the weather is nice, I do a SoulCycle (soul-cycle.com) class or a beach walk once or twice a week. DIET I eat very healthy for the most part, but I do allow myself to indulge once Above: in a while. I love to get BEAUTYCOUNTER a green smoothie at SunTint Skin Foundation, $41. ELTAMD UV Daily Life Organics (sunlife Broad-Spectrum SPF organics.com .com) after yoga. 40, $26. I never have a huge breakfast and don’t eat late at night. Clockwise: HASTAIN TRAIL in FRANKLIN CANYON overlooks Downtown L.A. TOMALES POINT TRAIL in Marin. HOLLYE JACOBS at the top of SAN YSIDRO TRAIL in Santa Barbara.

Lady of the CANYON

The Silver Pen blogger and author HOLLYE JACOBS finds her stride amid California’s generous BACKCOUNTRY As a nurse living in Chicago, my idea of a hike was to take the stairs rather than the elevator. Even though I write an awardwinning blog about health and wellness (thesilverpen.com), and after publishing a book about my experience with breast cancer, I still couldn’t conceive of the realities and soon-to-be-discovered joys of hiking in California. Shortly after I moved from the cold and wet Midwest to warm and sunny California, a new friend invited me on a group hike. “A hike?” I thought. “Where are the ladies who lunch?” Though I had never hiked before, as a health-care professional, marathon runner and passionate all-around health enthusiast, I considered myself to be fit and pre-

sumed that I would be able to keep up with the ladies, three of whom were 20 years older than me. About 15 minutes into the hike on the Old Pueblo Trail in Montecito, I realized that I was in big trouble. I could neither keep up nor breathe. My reaction teetered between being completely mortified and utterly inspired. I made the conscious decision to be inspired, and since that first hike nearly five years ago, nary a day goes by without trail time. Research has confirmed what I have instinctively known and written about for a long time: Hiking makes a person physically and emotionally healthier and happier. It’s so much more than a workout; though make no mistake, it is definitely a workout. In fact, just one hour can burn more than 500 calories. However, when I’m hiking, burning calories is the furthest thing from my mind. Unlike other forms of exercise, it enables me to make a mind-body-nature connection that I never made whilst logging miles on a treadmill or contorted on a Pilates Reformer. It enhances my creativity, clears my mind and brings me into the present. And every day that I hike—usually with girlfriends after school drop-off and before my workday begins—my sleep is enhanced, stress is reduced and I feel joyful. What in the world is better than that? •

Trail Mix

CALIFORNIA IS A HIKER’S PARADISE WITH AMAZING TRAILS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH. HERE, A FEW OF HOLLYE’S FAVORITES MARIN Tomales Point Trail at Point Reyes National Seashore is a wonderful hike for peaceful solitude and to see wildlife. If you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the elk. This trail can get quite windy, so check the weather beforehand because you may need a jacket and hat. SAN FRANCISCO Lands End trail has gorgeous views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. A picnic at Lands End Point is especially enjoyable. SANTA BARBARA You’ll find me on the San Ysidro Trail several days a week. It has many different options with varying mileage, all of which have spectacular views of the Channel Islands. LOS ANGELES Located between Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley, Franklin Canyon has many different trail options, ranging in difficulty.

L.A.-based interior designer (and former creative director for HD Buttercup) Heather Ashton traces the genesis of her six-piece indoor-outdoor collection to furniture she created for San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House: “I saw the potential for the pieces in the sun-drenched atrium of the space,” she says. “Happy accidents!” Happy indeed: The midcentury-inspired wire furniture is powder-coated in an array of uplifting colors and upholstered in bold, durable Sunbrella fabrics. “I wanted a collection that was elegant, but not so serious,” says Ashton. It’s also made-to-order, which means the Fay dining chair, with its succinct swoop of a silhouette, is available in your choice of color and finish, and the architectural Hayden rectangular coffee table can be topped with ipe, walnut, lacquered or matte maple wood, contingent on your aesthetic, and your yen to go alfresco. heatherashtondesign.com.

The house was designed by Caplowe after a fire destroyed the original structure a few years ago, and it’s now a modernist, loftlike space ideal for entertaining. The open-plan living-dining area extends to a rear deck that drops down to a terraced backyard with sitting areas, a kitchen garden, a bocce ball court and plenty of foraging space for the couple’s potbellied pig, Oliver, and chickens, Edna Lewis and Amelia Earhart. “I meet so many amazing people,” says Bennett, gesturing to the assembled group of chef and foodie friends, all members of what she dubs the “Apron Squad.” “I don’t curate these brunches, people just bring what they want and we hang out and cook.” For this Sunday gathering, guests include

Since 2012, line cook-turned-designer Ellen Bennett of Hedley & Bennett has been producing a range of stylishly sturdy utilitarian aprons that have taken the culinary world by storm. Just last year, the company, which counts star chefs such as Vinny Dotolo and Mario Batali among its fans, moved into a 14,000-square-foot facility near Downtown L.A. where the entire collection of aprons, work shirts, chef coats and now table linens are produced by hand. Always on the go, Bennett has found that the best way for her to recharge is to host casual gatherings—“Bennett Brunches,” as they’re known—at the Echo Park home she shares with her boyfriend, Casey Caplowe, creative director and co-founder of Good magazine.

All arrive with their specialty in tow, donning aprons and ready to prep everything from food to fresh herb bouquets. Bennett doesn’t stand on formality and soon the entire space is humming. “It’s the vibe of a kitchen in my own kitchen!” she says gleefully. While Oh is outside grilling a 3-pound tomahawk steak marinated in Korean spices, Funke is at the island making pasta for his signature dish, cacio e pepe. “She’s got style and grace—sort of Italian 1960s yet cutting edge,” Funke says of Bennett. “She’s changed kitchen clothes, and that’s so cool.” In addition to her own line, Bennett also offers full customization, something Oh and Funke are exploring: Oh for staff aprons, and Funke for a shop coat inspired by butchers’ jackets. As the outside temperature soared, Bennett and friends dragged the picnic table, laid with her prototype linens, and ceram-

(The open door did, however, mean that Oliver the pig was able to come and go as he pleased, at one point absconding with several of Gallardo’s avocados.) These brunches, which have been happening for about a year, have inspired countless new friendships (and recipes), but they are also the story behind her latest collection. When Bennett started grabbing random fabrics to use as impromptu tablecloths, she thought, “Why not make runners and napkins?” Launching this summer, the new linens are available in four colorways, but expect more to follow. “They’re all different. I love the zigzag stitching,” she says. Bennett’s energy is perhaps best summed up by Caplowe: “She’s a ‘let’s get stuff done’ person,” he says. And as toasts go up and the meal is begun, Bennett is truly happy. “I love putting people in crazy situations, like peeling carrots with a famous chef. When you take people out of their comfort zone, beautiful things can happen.” hedleyandbennett.com. • MAILE PINGEL

Chef Suzanne Goin and wine director Caroline Styne have already made their mark on Los Angeles’ culinary landscape with the likes of A.O.C., Tavern, The Larder and Lucques. This summer, the L.A. natives are set to broaden their fan base as the Hollywood Bowl’s new culinary partners. With sit-down restaurants, street snacks, food trucks and a wine bar among the new options, Goin and Styne dish on their latest endeavor. Fondest memory of the Hollywood Bowl? Suzanne Goin: We went to the Bowl a lot when I was a kid—mostly classical nights—I have such great visceral memories of being snuggled in with my mom, half sleeping, half listening to the beautiful music while my parents sipped martinis from jelly jars. How did the list at The Wine Bar by A.O.C. outpost come together? CS: It centers on small, artisanal winemakers and those who are farming sustainably, organically and biodynamically. I structured it to be a mix of solid examples of traditional wines from the major appellations and peppered in some unusual wines like Arneis from Santa Barbara. What are you most excited about? SG: The Backyard—one of the three sit-down restaurants. The menu is driven by two wood-burning grills— chicken, veal chops, fish and steaks with fresh herb salsa and bright, fresh sauces. What shows are you most looking forward to? SG: Dudamel and Lang Lang on July 12 because they are two amazing masters in their prime. An entirely plant-based menu (most of it grown on or foraged from Aja’s 23-acre grounds), apothecary room and meditation spaces help support the process—as does the luxurious, state-of-theart spa, complete with a rare John of God healing crystal bed, imported from Brazil, for light-therapy treatments. Looking for a place to unwind after feasting on yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño, Chilean sea bass with dry miso and luscious slabs of A5 Wagyu beef? Nobu is said to be adding a much-welcome project to its vaunted presence on Carbon Beach with the Nobu Ryokan Hotel, located a rock shrimp tempura’s throw from the restaurant’s oceanfront location. Meanwhile, its neighbor, the Malibu Beach Inn (malibubeachinn.com), recently unveiled a refreshed reception area, restaurant and bar by interior designer Waldo Fernandez, with a complete overhaul of the 47 guest rooms slated next. “The thought really was to try and create an interior that captured the serenity of Malibu beach, and that didn’t fight with the surroundings,” Fernandez says. TRAVEL Diary

HAVANA Nights L.A.-based illustrator and model LANGLEY FOX recounts her trip to CUBA for the Chanel show and an afternoon at her late great-grandfather’s home

Here we were, my best friend and I, taking a trip with Chanel to the infamous Cuba for the Cruise 2017 presentation. Not knowing what to expect, I had memories of good times when I traveled there as an 11-year-old. We landed and, from the start, my mind was exploding: the colors, the dilapidated buildings, the retro cars, men calling out to you. So far, not disappointed. We got into a hot-pink 1957 Buick Electra convertible and were ready to explore. We drove through Bosque de La Habana, an incredible forest park of overgrown vines and trees. Our driver surprised us with tunes: The Beach Boys, The Cramps, Elvis, perfect for our cruise down the beachfront. Landing satisfied back at Hotel Saratoga (hotel-saratoga.com), it was time to gallop off to dinner with the rest of the Chanel invitees. Day two arrived and we had things to do! First, El Floridita (floridita-cuba.com) for a portrait with Vogue Japan. The bar had been a favorite of my great-grandfather Ernest Hemingway and they had favored him— like all of Cuba, really. Next we headed to Ernest’s home, Finca Vigía [meaning “lookout house”] (hemingwaycuba.com), which he bought in 1940. I peered into his life; exploring the pool, his boat, the tombstones of

After much convincing, my friend and I were allowed in the actual house—a woman went on to tell me more than I had ever learned about my great-grandfather. She showed us the logo he had painted on all his diningware (which was incredibly similar to my tattoos)—the first time I’d ever laid eyes upon it. I welled up, sitting there in tears, appreciating the beautiful atmosphere of an incredible man. It was a chance of a lifetime I will never forget. It was time to ready ourselves for the Chanel show. We drove down in another retro car and entered an oversized walkway in the middle of the street. With locals watching from their balconies, the show began. A spectacular band assembled by Michel Gaubert filled the air, and the girls and boys walked with a little sass in their step and kick in their heel, reflecting the Cuban spirit. The next day was our last in Cuba. And after getting lost in the winding streets, we had to pack our bags and say goodbye to this lovely place that has stayed “as is” for so long. •

Writer, producer and comedian Katie Dippold’s easygoing manner belies a mighty sword—her pen. The New Jersey native got her start in sketch and improv comedy— you can still see her at Upright Citizens Brigade in L.A. once a week—but it’s her self-effacing writing that’s made her a talent on the rise. Dippold’s on-point work for the Amy Poehler sitcom Parks and Recreation and 2013 female-duo cop comedy The Heat now makes way for perhaps her biggest splash yet: a co-writing credit for the allfemale reboot of Ghostbusters. The feature, opening July 15, reunites

Dippold with writer-director Paul Feig. “Paul really wasn’t into a sequel,” says Dippold. “He thought if he could do it with women it released [us] from matching the old characters.” The two passed versions back and forth to craft an origin story that touches on everything from the genesis of the proton pack to the evolution of the supernatural-fighting team. With Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon in starring roles, Dippold rightly points out, women— both in front of and behind the camera— have never been hotter.

“This is a place we went out of our way to create,” says designer Vanessa Alexander of the Malibu home she built for her family. A former manager of writers, actors and directors, it was only a few years ago that Alexander, who had long done design projects on the side, truly delved into her passion with the launch of Alexander Design. The family (Alexander is married to ICM partner and talent agent Steve Alexander and they have three boys, Max, 14, Leo, 11, and Jude, 7) previously called nearby Serra Retreat home, but Alexander was craving a new creative project and one home in Point Dume caught her eye, albeit for all the wrong reasons. “It was sort of Balinese-Tuscan-’90s,” she explains. “We really didn’t think too much of it.” However, not long after they saw it, her thinking changed: “It dawned on me that we could make it cool. It had

mountain views and was close to school. It had something. And then I cracked it!” By cracking, Alexander means a complete re-envisioning of the house and turning the property into a beachy-yet-eclectic sanctuary with elements of Tuscany and farmhouse living. “I wanted to create something that felt authentic while honoring the neighborhood and lifestyle,” she adds. They purchased the home and immediately began a major renovation that took just about a year to complete. “The existing house was gutted and we sort of ‘rebranded it’—which is a strange way to put it, but that’s what we did.” “The through line,” Alexander says in perfectly appropriate Hollywood lingo, “is that we wanted to embrace our surroundings. “We’re all about indoor-outdoor.” And as she does for her clients, she did for herself: “I try to approach each project with the understanding of the people living in it.” To that end, out went a warren of rooms and in came modern living. Even the gravel drive evokes the European countryside. “We wanted a house that works for us as parents but also for more social occasions,” she continues. The main living areas, which include a comfortable living room with the couple’s prized Marco Zanuso chairs, a casual dining room and a “sunroom/TV room,” shape-shift from expansive to intimate. The light, neutral palette is only occasionally punctuated by deeper colors like an indigo chair in the living room or the cognac-colored leather barstools in the kitchen, which was designed around a rolling island from a 19thcentury bakery. Upstairs are the master suite and children’s rooms. Continued on p.142

“I have a reoccurring nightmare about the Met Ball,” says Mia Wasikowska. The vaunted fashion event is six days away, and the 26-year-old has just landed in Los Angeles from her native Australia. In 48 hours she’ll fly to New York for fittings with longtime stylist Ryan Hastings, and zero in on an ensemble fit for fashion’s most closely watched affair (in the end, she opted for a plunging red Prada gown). “I’m a fish out of water in that kind of world. The six hours before is probably the most stressful, because you’re anticipating walking up the steps, and people yelling at you, and not knowing where to look.” Today, however, is a much different story. It’s noon and Wasikowska has just sat down for lunch at L’Ermitage in Beverly Hills. Sporting a cropped blond bob (she’s growing out her signature pixie cut), Wasikowska is wearing a sleeveless dress by Australian label Tome, paired with a Valentino sweater, which she was gifted after a press event, and flats. “This is much fancier than what I normally wear,” she says almost apologetically in her soft Aussie accent. “Because I’m lucky enough to do films and wear nice clothing, I have a couple of pieces I really love.” The last time she walked the Met Ball carpet was in 2011, on the heels of her leading role in Jane Eyre, opposite Michael Fassbender. It was the latest in a string of star-turning films for the actress, including the Oscar-nominated The Kids Are All Right (2010) and Tim Burton’s 3-D blockbuster hit, Alice in Wonderland (2010). Her calculated re-emergence onto the fashion-world radar coincides with her reprisal of the character Alice Kingsleigh in summer’s Disney fantasy film sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, based on the Lewis Carroll novel. “[The film] was super unexpected because usually, I would’ve thought we would have done a sequel a year later. So I just thought it wasn’t ever going to happen,” says Wasikowska, who first heard sequel chatter three years after Alice in

Wonderland had wrapped production. “I was so surprised. I never took it seriously until I was having a costume fitting for it.” It was a welcome return to Wonderland for Wasikowska, alongside a cast of familiar names, including Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Car-

“I inherited an amazing cast, and she is such a fantastic Alice,” says Bobin, who watched all of Wasikowska’s performances prior to the start of filming in 2014. “I was like a fan meeting her to begin with. She really thought about the character very well and how she wanted to approach it,” he adds. “It was really a question of trying to take the character forward in interesting ways while staying true to what Lewis Carroll’s idea of Alice was.” For Bobin, that meant capturing Alice as a strong, independent young woman, while tapping into Carroll’s absurdist dreamscape (the film takes a feminist tone throughout). The role was a demanding one, he points out, with Alice appearing in almost every scene. With no projects on her slate in the immediate future (“I really wanted a break and it was a good time because there wasn’t anything that I was really dying to do”), Wasikowska is looking forward to downtime at home in Sydney. Lunch arrives, and over a plate of Mediterranean meze, Wasikowska reflects on her easy and somewhat sheltered childhood in Canberra, where she grew up with her brother and two sisters. “I don’t think I saw a billboard until I was like 12. Well, not really—but it feels a bit like that, in comparison to the awareness that’s here [in Los Angeles]. It’s nice to grow up without that, I think.” A passionate ballerina (both parents were involved in the arts), Wasikowska gave up dancing at age 14 when she realized she didn’t have the right body type to pursue it as a career. Heartbroken, she turned to acting. “It’s a really close cousin [to dance] in the sense that it’s a full body kind of expression.” In short order, she was signed to a talent agency and began booking auditions, including one that brought her to Los Angeles. Though Wasikowska didn’t land the intended part, she signed on with a stateside talent agent, eventually scoring a recurring role as a suicidal gymnast in the HBO drama series In Treatment Continued on p.142

I felt like I knew that world and what to expect,” says Wasikowska while sipping on a warm cup of tea to stave off jet lag. There were plenty of fresh faces on set, too, including Sacha Baron Cohen (as the newly created human-clock character, Time) and Rhys Ifans, cast as the Mad Hatter’s father. But the most notable newcomer was under-the-radar director James Bobin, who stepped away from the dark, shadowy nuances of Burton’s adaptation to create a more child-friendly take on the Carroll tale. “James was super passionate in a way that was really lovely,” says Wasikowska. “He seemed to really genuinely care about the characters in the film, and he has young kids, so I feel like that was always at the back of his mind. He knew what they’d enjoy.”

Seven years ago, San Francisco interior designer Jay Jeffers acquired a small house among the vineyards on the rustic western edge of St. Helena. Based in San Francisco for the last 20 years, and with his studio in the gritty heart of the burgeoning Tenderloin, Jeffers quickly became obsessed with the low-key Napa Valley pleasures of Saturday farmers markets, walks to town, exploring deserted country lanes, and relaxing as the sun goes down over the deep green Mayacamas range. So it was natural, when a new client called him about decorating their family compound near the Silverado Trail and just a mile away from his weekend retreat, that he would hop on his chic Martone bicycle and pedal across the valley for a first meeting. “I loved the grandeur and elegance of their Victorian house, which was built in 1895 and is now surrounded by handsome old oaks,” says Jeffers. He appraised the dramatic potential of the historic architecture, complete with wide porches and a turret, and immediately started planning a cohesive and practical

interior layout, as well as shaded outdoor spaces for entertaining. Jeffers is an expert at artfully capturing the traditional-meets-today relaxed style that works well in northern Napa Valley. With deft use of color—both vibrant and subdued—he sketched elegant but easygoing rooms and a family retreat to accommodate several generations. “The house was beautifully crafted and mostly intact, but we wanted to emphasize a fresher look, with no hint of Victoriana,” says Jeffers. He painted woodwork, balustrades and doors in a glossy gray-black, and selected a very understated palette in tones of cerulean, steel, ivory and dove gray. Jeffers admires the agricultural heritage of Napa Valley, and installed vintage farmhouse pieces in the sunroom and guest cottages, as well as a customdesigned wood and steel console table in the hallway. For the San Francisco family that treasures weekends here, it has become a perfect, private sanctuary. They ride bikes into St. Helena for breakfast, walk along the lane to Meadowood for brunch, and pick fruit and vegetables in the garden year-round. These city-dwellers watch the children swim until dusk (in the newly added swimming pool), chase lizards, explore the wild hills just beyond the property and stargaze at night.

Clockwise from above: The sunroom walls are painted with BENJAMIN MOORE Yellow Brick Road. In the Blue Room, the custom chaises are by A. RUDIN; vintage floor lamps and wall mirrors from 1ST DIBS. The children’s room complete with bunk beds.

One of the great achievements of Jeffers and his team was creating a convivial mood, opening up hallways and shaping a comfortable connection between all the rooms as well as between the main house and the guest cottages. “We planned each room with is own character, and for its purpose,” says Jeffers. The bright sunroom overlooking the pool is the most popular spot all year, with large-scale custom sofas and tufted armchairs upholstered in durable outdoor fabrics. It’s here everyone gathers at the end of the day to taste a new bottle, or to greet Napa Valley wine-growing friends who arrive for a barbecue. “It’s such a relaxed house,” says Jeffers. “The lively conversation is likely to be about the vineyards, the farmers market, a newly released wine, a new restaurant. It’s pure escape and my clients, now dear friends, seem perfectly at home.” •

And while summer translates into plenty of time spent with their toes in the sand, the sisters have to earn it first: Abby is set to intern under legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz, while Izzy will devote her time to charity work in Los Angeles (parents Susan and Eric Smidt are noted philanthropists). “I couldn’t imagine growing up anywhere else besides L.A.,” says Abby. “California pretty much has it all, from skiing to the beach.” @abbyysmidt; @izzyysmidt. •

Laura Vassar Brock and her husband Kristopher Brock, co-designers of the luxury womenswear label Brock Collection (brocknewyork.com), recently relocated from New York to Laura’s hometown of Newport Beach. “There is a sense of ease Newport offers that we find integral to our creative process. Based on the approach to an effortless way of dressing, the Spring/Summer 2016 collection was very much inspired by [this] easy lifestyle,” she notes. Here, her local haunts. • The Wedge Our 1-year-old loves to walk down most mornings [with us] and watch the surfers. • A’maree’s The only place to shop in Newport Beach. It is one of the most beautifully curated stores in the world, and for us it’s only a boat ride away! amarees.com. • Alta Coffee The best spiced chai latte around. I always pop in after my Villa Pilates & Yoga class. altacoffee-co.com. • Emerald Bay Our favorite summer day is taking the boat here with friends—we spend the day in the water and come home sun-kissed and happy! • Spa Montage Laguna Beach For a massage followed by lunch on the terrace. montage .com • Nobu We are thrilled hotels.com. to have Nobu coming to Lido Village—it will be a great date spot! noburestaurants.com. • G Street One of my most favorite beaches because it is a bit more secluded. • The Dock It is on the bay, seats an intimate number of tables and has the most delicious menu. dineatthedock.com dineatthedock.com. Capturing the Golden State of Mind

Sebastian Tkacik, Carpinteria, 2015 California has an international polo presence, drawing fans from far-flung corners every summer to Santa Barbara. Living up to the city’s nickname of “The American Riviera,” the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, founded in 1911, is the third-oldest polo club in the United States. Pristinely positioned between the ocean and the mountains, the grounds are open every Friday and Sunday, May through October, for matches, complete with divot stomping and Champagne. Keep an eye out for stars such as Nacho Figueras (who you may spot this June signing copies of his recently endorsed romance novels) and locals like Argentina-born Sebastian Tkacik (shown here), who offers exclusive training through his polo academy, Don Esteban. Grab a hat, a $10 ticket or a posh cabana and experience the height of civility in our own backyard. sbpolo.com.
