Greetings Sorors: Summer has arrived! I want to thank each of you for an excellent second quarter and for supporting all of our OCO programs and events. I hope each of you enjoyed the 69th Regional conference in Hampton, VA. Thank you to the Sisterly Relations Committee for hosting the Friday night dinner. We had an awesome time and it was one of the highlights of the conference. Sorors, please help me in congratulating Soror Erica Blanch. . She was recognized during the Public Meeting and won the JKC Purpose, Persistence, and Entrepreneurship (PPE) award for our Cluster. OCO was also recognized as Best of Best for Membership and at the EAF breakfast as a Platinum Chapter.

In the month of May, we celebrated our 37th Chapter Anniversary and service within Greater Prince William County. A special thank you to Soror Tatana Todd and the Archives Committee for doing a New Thing by hosting our first-ever virtual anniversary program. OCO is blessed to have six of our living legends active with us today.      

Sorors, we had an amazing 2nd annual Leadership Summit. Thank you to Soror Dawn King, the entire planning committee, and all presenters. The theme was “Step Up: You Too Can Lead.” Leadership development is crucial to the sustainability of our Chapter. We must continue to foster a sisterly environment where Sorors feel empowered to step up and lead.

As we close out the Excellence administration, I want to extend pink tea roses to all of the Target chairs who have served from 2018-2022. OCO truly embraced and successfully implemented all five targets. Sorors, we exceeded our Chapter goals and made a true impact on our local community. The following Sorors have done an amazing job and were instrumental in the success of our programming.     

College Signing Day Target 1 held its College Signing Day on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at 10:00 a.m.

It was a very exciting day for sorors in attendance and the 12 graduating seniors. Though some have attended the same high school, they are all spreading their wings to venture out to different colleges or universities. One-third of seniors in the CAP program have signed with an HBCU. Seven students will remain in state, and five will attend universities out of state.

The program began with a word from our Basileus, Soror Christina Henry-Roberson, congratulating the seniors on their accomplishments and having to adjust their learning during the pandemic. The guest speaker for the Program was none other than our own Lauren Coleman, a legacy and daughter of Soror Marlene Coleman. Lauren is currently a news anchor at WFMY News 2 in Greensboro, North Carolina. She hosts the Four 2 Five and the 5 o’clock News. Lauren shared her not so long-ago experiences as a young college student trying to find her way. She reminded students to follow their passion even though it may be different from what parents may have in mind.

There’s a big world out there, and don’t be afraid to explore and find something they enjoy doing. Lauren also shared a few lyrics from musician Drake and how they are so relevant for such a milestone as their graduation and going off to college. It’s an important time and make it count.

Students were presented with certificates by Soror Marlene Coleman, followed by graduates reciting the College Pledge.

It’s nice to be presented with a surprise, and the graduating seniors got just that, thanks to Soror Connie Glaze. An awesome video was created with pictures of the seniors, the institution of learning each will be attending, and a very powerful message by our very own Soror, Vice President Kamala Harris. She reminded the seniors, “There is no limit to your capacity for greatness. And there is no obstacle you cannot overcome. And there is no barrier you cannot break.” The excitement did not end there; it continued with an announcement that each senior would be receiving a monetary award in varying amounts based on their attendance. Glaze Photography also blessed the students with a textbook scholarship. The Program ended with words from our Anti-Basileus, Soror Connie Glaze.

Target 1 did it again, many thanks to our Chairman, Soror Marlene Coleman.

OCO Supports Longest Day to Bring Awareness to Alzheimer’s ABOUT THE LONGEST DAY The Longest Day is the day with the most light — the summer solstice. On June 21, thousands of participants from across the world including sorors of Omicron Chi Omega came together to fight the darkness of Alzheimer's through an activity of their choice. Together, they used their creativity and passion to raise funds and awareness for the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sorors, the first six months of 2022 have flown by. Here, in Target 3, there’s no slowing down as we worked hard to complete the final activities of Building our Economic Legacy with Boule on the horizon.

Entrepreneurship and Black Dollar 365 Our Entrepreneurship and Black Dollar Tracker 365 sub-committee led by Soror Toi Tanton continued to highlight the importance of Entrepreneurship and supporting black businesses by developing and distributing the spring edition of Marketing Mondays, publishing OCO’s first Black Business Directory and completing the Black Dollar 365 Tracker challenge.

First, the committee’s Marketing Mondays lead, Soror Detra Moorman created a fabulous spring Marketing Mondays that highlighted Sorors in the chapter who own fast food businesses in Prince William County including Soror Brenda Johnson, Soror Erica Blanch, Soror Detra Moorman, and Soror Amanda Johnson.

The spring edition also highlighted several businesses from OCO’s first Black Business Directory including AKA owned businesses such as The Dental Spa owned by Dr. Marvette Thomas in Woodbridge, VA. In addition, the committee completed and published OCO’s first Black Business Directory with close to 370 businesses led by Soror Phyllis Camper. The Black Business Directory included a variety of businesses in Prince William County and online businesses located in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and beyond.

Sorors, these past four years you have been diligent in tracking your Black dollars spent and we compiled a directory for everyone to easily locate and support a Black owned business in the area. Speaking of dollars spent… Target 3 has had the distinct pleasure of challenging everyone to track their dollars in the Black Dollar 365 Tracker. Month after month you spent your hard-earned money and were avid patrons for AKA owned, Black owned, woman owned, and Non-Black minority owned businesses. Each and every dime tracked, went toward shifting economic buying power to our community and exemplifying how we support what matters most to us.

Sorors, we are pleased to announce that as of May 31, 2022, OCO has tracked over $622,000 in the last four years!!! How amazing is that?! You dug deep down in those pockets and really showed out!

At the June chapter meeting, the first, second and third place winners for the 2022 Black Dollar 365 Tracker challenge were announced. For the first time during the Black Dollar Tracker Challenge, all three winners were OCO committee chairs. For those who missed the announcement at the chapter meeting, we will highlight the winners again. The third-place winner is OCO’s Technology Chair, Soror Daramia Hinton who tracked $8,096.12.

The second-place winner is OCO’s Target 2 Chair, Soror LaToya Haynes who tracked $15,838 Drum Roll!!! And the first-place winner of the 2022 Black Dollar 365 Challenge is OCO’s Membership Chair, Soror LaRhonda Stevenson who tracked $34,842. The first, second and third place winners will receive prizes from the committee’s 2022 Black Dollar Tracker sponsors including: Gold Sponsor Tropical Smoothie Café co-owned by Soror Erica Blanch, Gold Sponsor Vines Sapla and Associates owned by Soror Carolyn Vines Sapla and Diamond Sponsor Jurani Coffeehouse owned by Soror Detra Moorman.

Personal Finance and Credit Repair and Monitoring Sub-Committee For Personal Finance and Credit Repair and Monitoring Target 3 participated in April’s Financial Literacy Month by inviting our very own Tea Rose Investment Club President, Soror Veronica Green to share investment basics at the April chapter meeting. The committee also highlighted savings tips weekly in Financial Fridays. We also held our first Savings Challenge where the OCO Sorors were able to decide on ways they wanted to intentionally save their coins and then reflect on how a month of changing money habits had an impact.

Target 3 is giving you a standing ovation for the work you have done, support you’ve provided, and the dollars you have spent over the last four years. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve you as you have begun to Build Your Economic Legacy. Our hope is you continue to spotlight and support local Black businesses, grow your financial literacy and educate others, and most importantly give to those in need in our community.

Christina Henry-Roberson, President of Omicron Chi Omega Chapter, and Brenda Johnson Target IV: The Arts!® Chairman, presented a check for $500.00 to NOVA Community College in recognition of the generosity that Dr. Sam Hill bestowed to Target IV: The Arts® during the past four years. Dr. Hill, during his tenure as Provost had a great appreciation for Omicron Chi Omega Chapter in its effort to serve Prince William County and could be counted on to collaborate with the chapter on numerous projects as well.

Omicron Chi Omega Chapter will miss Dr. Hill as he retires this year. We wish him well.

Target V: Global Impact – Levels Up PARTNERSHIP WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT EQUALS A+ RESULTS

On Thursday, April 28 Sorors Shanay, Krista, and Valerie went back to high school and assisted with a community shoe collection. Target V partnered with Angel, a high school junior and his guidance counselor Mrs. Beatty at Hylton High School. Angel organized the entire project, including selecting volunteers from the Business Leaders of Tomorrow program, filming a commercial, and promoting the event through the school’s announcements. Angel collected 500 pairs of shoes. Target V provided each volunteer a certificate of appreciation which includes their community service hours, and Angel and Mrs. Beatty both received $25 Target gift cards.

OCO Contributions Help Beacon Adult Literacy Fundraiser Exceed Goals In April, Sorors donated $844.80 to the Beacon Walk for Literacy virtual fundraiser, which was 160% over our goal and a 63% increase from last year.

Beacon Walk for Literacy exceeded their $30,000 goal by $8,500. Pink Tea Roses to Soror Michele Jordan for being the Top donor!

Keeping Up With the Sewing Sisters Picture the excitement of young girls trying on dresses made by hand, assembled with your hands. This is the reality of the Cherubs Orphanage in Ghana the recipients of our pillowcase dresses.

Unfortunately, there were not items in this delivery for the boys; so OCOs Sewing Sisters will go back to their sewing machines and produce more boys’ shirts.

Donations to Lott Carey in Africa Lott Carey’s motto is “Impacting the World through Hope, Patience, and Prayer.” Target V donated $300 to Lott Carey Baptist Mission School, which has more than 600 students enrolled in K-12 on two campuses in Liberia. Our donations will help pay annual school fees for two students.

Risk Management Committee Risks exist in all industries. As various companies have different challenges and priorities when it comes to Risk Management, they need to understand the various threats they face and ways to manage them now and in the future.

When organizations have their Risk Management priorities, it will help them find a system that meets their needs best. When it comes to financial institutions, for example, their top Risk Management priorities are: Improving the quality of data, making the data more readily available, creating more accurate timeliness of risk data, and improving existing risk information systems as well as the technology infrastructure to combat it.

In each quarterly edition of “The Ivy Line,” we will discuss some of the most common examples of Risk Management and what they mean.

Commonly Used Risk Management Examples Risk Avoidance - The best way to explain risk avoidance would be to take the example of an investor trying to manage his/her risk in the company in which they have invested. If the company they have invested in is going through losses and decide to sell their investment (stock) in the company, they can exclude it from their list of investments, it is considered risk avoidance.

Customer Credit Risk Management - When it comes to the retail industry, there is always a risk because of the external factors involved. One such external factor is customer credit, which can really impact the profits of the company. If companies conduct a customer credit risk analysis and find that things are not going so well, they can manage their risk. This can be done by stopping the extensions on invoices to the customers the company views as high risk so that it can eliminate further risk.

Industry-Specific Strategy - Take the manufacturing industry as an example. One organization wants to manufacture a new product. Before they can start production for the same, they must conduct a thorough risk analysis to understand the level of risk the company can face. Then they can decide if the benefits of manufacturing the new product can outweigh the risks that come with it or not.

Safety Risks - There can be a risk to the safety of the operations within the company.

This needs to be analyzed and taken care of regularly as well. All maintenance processes need to be audited regularly to check for latent human error in the processes. This can also be handled very efficiently if companies implement a Risk Management system.

Risk Management is a complex process because there are hundreds of different types of risks that companies need to be aware of. Many training and certification programs will impart knowledge for enterprise teams, which will help companies successfully mitigate risks and help the organization improve all its processes and generate more revenue.

Membership Committee The Membership Committee hosted a virtual “Breakfast w/ Basileus” on Saturday, March 5 th to capture all new members that recently joined the chapter. The committee provided our Very Important Pearls (reactivated and transferred) Sorors with an introduction to the chapter, and an overview of chapter operations. There were (9) new members in attendance. The program included overviews of OCO Chapter History, Foundation, Leadership Development and Mentoring. Also, a sisterly relations activity/icebreaker was included to get to know the new members by introducing themselves by presenting their special AKA paraphernalia/gift. The committee highly recommended that the new members get involved in Leadership Development and Mentoring Committees to further their learning of the chapter and chapter operations. The participants were presented with a OCO membership certificate and highlighted in the newsletter and on the chapter social media outlets. #YOUIN2022

Archives Committee: Remembering the Times: 37 Years of OCO Excellence

On Sunday May 22, 2022, at 2pm 63 Sorors traveled back through time with the Archives Committee culminating the end of the Excellence Administration and in celebration of our 37th Chapter Anniversary. We traveled back to 1984 where OCO began and truly were able to Remember the T.I.M.E.S: Taking Inventory of Memories that Embody Sisterhood via Zoom.

Through interactive skits with corresponding slides and music, questions and answers in the chat, and a few toasts, we followed the spark of the original five who desired a Prince William County based chapter, to the 18 Princesses of Pearls who diligently worked to charter Omicron Chi Omega chapter on May 19, 1985. Throughout the program, the Archive Committee members and members of the Mentorship Committee were able to share many of the innovative programs that Omicron Chi Omega has created to serve Prince William County, and the unique ways that the chapter has been able to promote the international platforms over the past 37 years. Sorors were not only able to salute our charter members, current and former basilei and committee members and innovators but also nurture our ivy. Sorors were able to win prizes, including items which were donated

by Soror Darlisa McCray of So Phresh and So Greek.

Because of the foresight of our leadership, this event was recorded to be available for years to come, and an encore showing was given prior to the June Chapter Meeting.

The Archives Committee hopes that this reflection on our history, community involvement and how much OCO has achieved over the years will inspire sorors to continue to build on the legacy of service that our charter members have built in Greater Prince William County and continue to serve with a love for all mankind.

Standards Committee: The Safest Way to Store Files Chapter files are safer when stored using one the following options. The first option is the cloud-based storage platform. This strategy is effective since it advocates sending a copy of a physical database to a secondary. It also provides a systematic forum organization of files, making it easier to access, share, and control any information. Moreover, data remains safe always, which means it cannot be easily stolen or damaged. There is also an immediate synching, where accessible data can be accessed anywhere and at any time. Another benefit connected with cloud-based storage is that it is more flexible, has disaster recovery, and has an automatic software update, which leads the users to less worrying about their files. It has a monthly or yearly plan, giving small and medium businesses options to store any amount of data.

The second option is Cold storage, which provides an alternative way of storing files. It entails separate drivers, the SD cards, thumb drivers, flash, and sometimes DVDs. This method is very costeffective and cheap for individuals and organizations. It does not require spending a lot out of pocket expenses and it can store large files that remain safe for an extended period. One of the advantages, the user can freely select the different storage capacities. This provides a method that is timesaving because all the information is displayed systematically once plugged into a computer. It is essential to note that they are compatible with many devices because of the USB interface. USB devices have the capacity of storing a massive amount of information concisely.

Various requirements are essential to consider when incorporating using the storage.

Therefore, it is necessary to understand the exact position of storing data, the terms and conditions and what the law states. It’s imperative that we as an organization, understand and be familiar with different countries' cloud-based storage standards. There is some very confidential information that requires unique storage attached with a strong password left on the trusted individuals. As the organization continues to move towards adopting a cloud-based storage, it is a step in the right direction for the two committees: Standards and Technology to partner and give the organization that added advantage for the users. This will reduce the mixing of files and create an avenue for uploading files correctly and easily. Monitoring activities will also improve as the user will be able to share data and check the progress simultaneously.

Jonah Todd Name: Jonah Micah Todd Parents: Matthew and Soror Tatana Todd High School: Todd Homeschool Academy Accomplishments: Jonah is an Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow member, BSA Honor Society. Tri-M Music Honor Society member, National Society of High School Scholars. He received the Service Engagement Achievement and Leadership award from Northern VA Community College as a dual enrolled student. He earned the Prince William Living Extraordinary Teens Award and will be on the cover of the magazine this summer. He is active as a Sinfonietta Orchestra member and Woodbridge Senior High School Theatre member both on stage and the orchestra pit. He is a youth leader at Chapel Springs Church and is active in The Source Youth and Fine Arts ministries.

Goals and Objectives: Mariah will attend Northern Virginia Community College in the fall and will transfer to the Old Dominion University, where she will pursue a Bachelor's degree.
