Greetings Sorors: Can you believe that we are at our ½ year mark? What a blessing to finally begin the process of putting the challenges of 2020 behind us, and looking forward to our ‘new normal’ as we move into the summer and finish out the remainder of the year with a bang!

OCO remains the busiest chapter in the region as we do not break for the summer, we prepare for the future. This of course includes our 2022 planning that will be a focus at our August retreat. This year’s retreat will be a two-day event; that requires registration, and will be an event to remember. Please lookout for details coming in July.

#CAP Program As the 2020-2021 OCO CAP Program is gradually coming to an end, the Committee has yet to cease its momentum. Although some students have committed to colleges or universities of their choosing, the committee wanted to ensure students do not forget about their local community college and all it has to offer. CAP students were given a presentation of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) whereby they were informed of the difference in community college tuition verses that of a fouryear college. Students were surprised at the amount of money they could save by attending a community college. In addition, students were informed of the agreement NOVA has with over 40 different fouryear institutions to admit transferring students and accepting the college credits earned at the community college. Students were reminded of the extracurricular activities offered at NOVA, and the need to stay engaged and active while attending college.

Students were also greeted by two former NOVA students who shared their experiences while a student at NOVA. They shared the comparison of transitioning from high school to community college, and the need to take responsibility for your education…getting assignments in promptly, meeting with your advisors, and knowing when to reach out and ask for help. Students were taken on a virtual tour of NOVA to acquaint them with the layout of the campus, and the location of the different centers.

Furthermore, students learned that transitioning to college isn’t always easy for everyone.

Students were reminded of the changes they have had to experience with virtual education, and not all students respond to change the same way. Some students may experience anxiety or depressions; therefore, it is important to monitor their mental health and utilize coping skills that were provided during the session.

The committee did not want to leave out managing finances while away at college. Students were provided a presentation that encourage them to develop a financial plan to help them manage their money. It’s not too late to establish a budget, savings account, and keep track of how they are spending their money. It was nice to see some of the students had already established a savings account.

STEPPING WITH THE SUPREME BASILEUS INSTRUCTIONS FOR RECORDING YOUR STEPS The Supreme Basileus encourages each member to walk 8,000 steps each day as part of the chapter’s Healthy Heart activities. Target II is providing OCO members with these detailed instructions for participation in this healthy cause. (We realize that there are additional ways to obtain steps other than by walking. Movements can also include, but not limited to gardening, biking, swimming, dancing, and chair exercises).

Note the best time to record your steps is at the end of the day when you have completed your step count. When you enter the site, the current date will appear. You can change the date to post steps on previous days by clicking on the date. See screenshot #5 below. Be aware, that you cannot enter steps for multiple days at one time. To begin posting your steps, go to the corporate AKA website. There are several ways and links to do this. Feel free to use the method you normally use to access the corporate AKA website.    

Greetings OCO Sorors, April was Financial Literacy Month and we wanted to keep you and your finances ahead of the game this year, Jonathan Wright presented a wealth of information at our April Chapter meeting. Points of discussion included the new reality of retirement plans, the four financial cornerstones, and the cash flow quadrant. Sorors, did you “increase your vision in 2021” yet?!

Mr. Wright encouraged us to create a vision board, develop a personal mission statement, get an accountability partner, and have a daily reminder!

If you haven’t now is a great time to set your intention for the rest of 2021 and use the tools you’ve gained so far in building your own economic legacy. Target III is working hard to empower our chapter with the necessary building blocks to help you make those dollars work for you. Be on the lookout for more Target II events coming soon.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Omicron Chi Omega Chapter is proud to support the Creative and Performing Arts Center (CAPAC) of Prince William County, Virginia for a third year.

Chapter President, Chairman and members of The Arts! Committee were proud to present to the Executive Director/ Co-founder and Director of the Board a big check at the George Mason’s Hylton and Performing Arts Center on May 27, 2021. We are pleased to contribute to the mission of this organization to showcase and celebrate the performing arts in our community. The efforts of CAPAC align with our Target IV, The Arts! A Salute to the Harlem Renaissance and The Black Arts Movement International Program. We hope that our donation of five hundred dollars ($500) will help to further the cause and extend influences in the Greater Prince William County area. These funds will help to the return of the excellent and exciting productions that bring the theater and performing arts to the area, as well as a new effort to establish a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) program. Target IV is please to support the arts over the years through this organization.

In April 2021 we launched our Spring Fling event where we discussed training, activities, and received feedback to ensure a successful first year between our Mentors and Mentees. The Mentors were paired up with their Mentees on this day and received the tools they would need for a fruitful mentoring experience. We discussed the criteria used for pairing everyone and the need for check-ins to ensure the experience is going smoothly for everyone. The meeting ended with a

Qualities of Good Mentoring

Good mentors do not take their roles lightly. They feel invested in the success of the mentee. Usually, this requires a Soror who is compassionate, and possesses the attributes of a good teacher or trainer. Excellent communication skills also are required. A good mentor is committed to helping mentees find success and gratification in her goals and aspirations. Overall good mentoring requires empowering the mentee to develop their own strengths, beliefs and personal attributes within the sorority. Sign Up for Online Voter Registration Training Voter registration is a Serious Matter! The committee is seeking volunteers to help register people to vote. It’s easy to get started; you will need to register and complete voter registration training. The online voter registration training will provide you valuable information regarding your responsibilities while conducting voter registration drives in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Connection Committee will compile a list of volunteers to assist with future voter registration drives.

Emotional and Social Intelligence Leadership Competencies: An Overview (from www.keystepmedia.com) Emotional Intelligence, a different way of being smart, is key to high performance at all levels, particularly for outstanding leadership.

Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to recognize our own feelings and those of others, and to manage emotions effectively in ourselves and our relationships. It is about much more than just having empathy or being “sensitive” ▬ that’s a common misconception about EI.

Emotional and Social Intelligence Leadership Competencies are each a learned capacity, based on Emotional Intelligence, which contributes to effective performance at work ▬ and often greater satisfaction in life as well.

There are four parts, or domains, to the Emotional and Social Intelligence Leadership Competency Model developed by Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness and Relationship Management.

Within each of these four domains nest learned competencies based on the underlying ability that make people outstanding performers in the workplace. These are skills that can be developed, just as you can improve anything that you practice regularly.

Self-Awareness 

Emotional Self-Awareness: The ability to understand our own emotions and their effects on our performance.

Self-Management    

Emotional Self-Control: The ability to keep disruptive emotions and impulses in check and maintain our effectiveness under stressful or hostile conditions.

Achievement Orientation: Striving to meet or exceed a standard of excellence; looking for ways to do things better; set challenging goals and take calculated risks.

Positive Outlook: The ability to see the positive in people, situations, and events and persistence in pursuing goals despite obstacles and setbacks.

Adaptability: Flexibility in handling change, juggling multiple demands, and adapting our ideas or approaches.

Social Intelligences vs. Emotional Intelligence Although social intelligence and emotional intelligence are related, they aren’t exactly the same thing. Emotional versus social intelligence can be thought of as the difference between the ways you or your students relate to yourselves versus the way you relate to each other. When comparing emotional intelligence and social intelligence, emotional intelligence involves selfawareness, self-regulation and self-control. Social intelligence is less focused on one’s own emotions or reactions and more focused on sensitivity toward the feelings, moods and motivations of others and the ability to interact with others as part of a group.

Sustainable Standards of Operational Excellence Standards Committee Coming Soon! Annual Chapter Self-Assessment It is the responsibility of all chapters to conduct an annual self-assessment. The Chapter Self-Assessment Form has been developed by the International Standards Committee using criteria from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Bylaws ®, Manual of Standard Procedures and other Resource Guides as approved by the Directorate and should be used by chapters in completing the Standards End-of-the-Year Report.

The goal of the self-assessment is to evaluate our chapter operations; ensure we are adhering to operations guidelines; and look for opportunities for continuous improvement.

Questions range from chapter duties and activities; chapter officers and duties; fiscal fitness; and parliamentary authority.

As we continue to conduct chapter operations virtually, we will use an online survey tool to tally the responses and track participation; as well as offer other safe methods such as phone interviews to assist and ensure every Soror can participate. A summary of the selfassessment results will be shared with the chapter at the December chapter meeting.

The annual Chapter Assessment is available to all chapter members and will be conducted by the November chapter meeting. More details will be shared at the chapter retreat!

In OCO, excellence is the standard, so 100% Soror participation is the goal!
