Welcome, welcome, welcome to the 37th Annual Carousel Ball, an evening celebrating the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC). Tonight, we gather together to support the more than 37.5 million Americans and more than 537 million people worldwide who suffer with diabetes. It is estimated that over 1.6 million Americans have type 1 diabetes. The number of Americans diagnosed with type 1 diabetes is rising annually. Many new technologies like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), insulin pumps and automatic insulin delivery systems (AID) have made care for diabetes easier in the last decade. With all of us together, we will win this fght against diabetes and one day, very soon, we will fnd the cure.
When Marvin and I were given the news that our seven-year-old daughter, Dana, had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, we had no knowledge of this disease and all of its terrible complications. At the time, the best treatment was in another state and getting there was diffcult. We thought about the thousands of families facing this daunting journey, and Marvin asked if I would like to create the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes here in Denver to help all the children with type 1 diabetes. With the help of so many wonderful, generous, caring friends and supporters, we began a life-long commitment.
It is now decades later, and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes is thriving. We have the best doctors, researchers, and treatment to care for the nearly 8,000 patients who come to the BDC from all over the world. I know how proud Marvin would be of all the advances that have been made, and of the dedication of our nurses, social workers, and informed staff. They have eased the burden of care through life-changing technology. Now, having type 1 diabetes is not as intimidating and the cure is within reach.
We are so proud and excited to honor Joe and Juli Smolen this evening with the High Hopes Tribute Award for their incredible support of and service with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. With this High Hopes Award gives respect and admiration, not just from me, not just from Dana, but from people all over the world. We thank you for the hope you have given for a future where we will get that Brass Ring. The recipient of this year’s Founders Award, Dr. Satish Garg, is a dear friend whom I admire and respect. He has been with us on this journey from the beginning with his incredible service and dedication to the Barbara Davis Center. He has played a major role in advancing adult diabetes care and clinical research. Dr. Satish Garg brings to us his knowledge, commitment, expertise, and determination in fnding a cure for diabetes. I am so proud to recognize him as our recipient.
Lighting up the stage this evening is the legendary rock band Counting Crows. Selling more than 20 million records worldwide, they are revered as one of the world’s most pre-eminent live touring rock bands. We are thrilled they are sharing their amazing gift of music with us tonight.
My thanks to one of the most illustrious composers of our time, David Foster. He has become one of the most successful songwriters and record producers in history winning 16 Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award and a Gloden Globe Award for “Best Original Song.” And thanks to his beautiful wife Katharine McPhee, a wonderful, talented actress and singersongwriter. I am so thrilled to have you both here tonight to give your talent to all who surround you.
I thank you all for the help you’ve given us throughout the years. I thank everybody here tonight and all who have given their talents, generosity and time. I thank our recipients and performers from the bottom of my heart for their generosity, their time, and their commitment in joining our fght and reaching for the Brass Ring. We will make the dream of a cure turn into reality.
With love, many thanks and appreciation,
Barbara Davis Founder and Honorary Event Co-Chairman
Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes and Children’s
Diabetes Foundation
Dear type 1 community and friends,
I am thrilled to welcome you to the 37th Annual Carousel Ball presented by our amazing partner and friend, Dexcom. This is an event where we come together to support and empower the families and community who are affected by type 1 diabetes.
In 1977 my parents, Barbara and Marvin Davis, created the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) to bring world class care to Colorado. At the same time, they created the Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) to support that vision. Today, I have the honor of being the steward for this amazing dream and I am so lucky to spend my days interacting with the remarkable, caring, and brilliant doctors, researchers, and staff at the Barbara Davis Center. Their passion for their patients, commitment to improving lives, and the dedication to not only fnding a cure for this disease but understanding and preventing it is an amazing combination that makes the Barbara Davis Center the go-to facility for diabetes care and research.
This evening, the Founders Award will be presented to Satish Garg MD, who founded the adult clinic in 1992 and has led it since then. His undying dedication for his patients and his ability to understand their entire story, not just their disease makes him a great doctor. Remarkably, the adult clinic currently has well over 450 patients who have been living with type 1 for over 40, 50, and even 60 years. I have the honor and privilege of being one of those patients. Your support tonight and your amazing generosity throughout the year will help increase the number of type 1’s living long, happy, healthy and productive lives.
This evening we honor Juli and Joe Smolen, two of Colorado’s most family-oriented, dedicated and caring people. I frst met Joe many years ago. His wife Juli learned about CDF and The Carousel Ball and urged him to reach out and get involved. Their daughter Abbey is type 1 and a patient of the BDC. She has such a great spirit and I’m happy to say is an amazing advocate for type 1’s wherever she goes. Meeting the Smolens started an incredible journey and partnership. Joe serves on the board of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and chairs our Tied to a Cure golf tournaments. The Smolen family supports with their time, talent and treasure, extending beyond their family to the wonderful partnership Joe has cultivated between CDF and Empower. It is with great pleasure that we present them with the High Hopes Tribute Award. Their time, generosity and friendship has changed so many lives and their positive spirit lifts all those who have the honor of knowing them.
The evening wouldn’t be complete without our amazing performers; the Children’s Diabetes Foundation is thrilled to have the legendary rock band Counting Crows to raise awareness and funds for the Barbara Davis Center. We are so fortunate to welcome back our longtime friend David Foster and his multitalented wife Katharine McPhee. This will certainly be a night to remember!
Thank you all for being a part of this special evening with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center and for your astounding support throughout the years! Together we are creating a community that provides type 1 patients the best chance for a healthy today and hope for tomorrow.
Dana Davis Executive Director and Event Chairman Children’s Diabetes Foundation
TThe High Hopes Tribute Award stands as a symbol of profound gratitude and recognition for individuals whose unwavering dedication has forged the path of our mission. This prestigious award, crafted by renowned artist Robert Graham (1938-2008) expressly for the Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF), continued its production at the skilled hands of his son, Steven Graham, until 2023. The award itself is a bronze rendering of a child’s hand gracefully reaching for a brass ring, bearing the recipient’s name delicately gilded and engraved. It pays tribute to the remarkable supporters who have invested their invaluable time, shared their exceptional talents, and generously contributed their treasures to further our cause.
Robert Graham’s artistic legacy includes monumental civic sculptures and national honors, and continues to grace the collections of esteemed national and international museums. The Carousel Ball was one of Robert and Steven’s favorite events to attend, and the foundation has been supported by the family throughout the years. It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of Steven Graham in September 2023, and we extend our deepest condolences to the entire Graham family.
he Founders Award serves as a tribute to individuals who have played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. These recipients not only form the bedrock of the diabetes community but have also dedicated relentless efforts to enhance quality of life for individuals with type 1 diabetes and their families. These honorees are not only recognized for their integral roles in CDF’s journey from its inception but also for their substantial philanthropic contributions to Colorado’s medical community. Past recipients of this distinguished award have achieved remarkable feats that not only shattered longstanding beliefs but also made signifcant contributions to the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes and the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. Their accomplishments include groundbreaking work to minimize the risk of long-term complications with type 1 diabetes, assist women to safely bear children, and dispel the myth of one’s ability to prevent type 1 diabetes. Furthermore, they have made groundbreaking strides in advancing adult diabetes care and pioneering clinical research on a global scale.

“Ibelieve that everyone gets three rounds in their life,” says musician, songwriter, composer, arranger, producer, and recording artist David Foster. “For me, two are completed and I’m on to round three. I think you have to change it up every round. My mantra is retreat and attack in another direction, which I’ve done twice. Now I’m going to do it again.”
Foster’s frst round was as a studio musician, arranger, and recording artist. His second round was becoming one of the most successful songwriters and record producers in history — shepherding albums that have collectively sold in the hundreds of millions. This period of his four-decade career also found him creating The David Foster Foundation and volunteering his time and talent to over 400 charities, as well as becoming a household name as a performer throughout Asia where he tours annually.
For his third round, Foster is gearing up to take on Broadway with several projects. These include writing the music for a new musical about the iconic, animated character Betty Boop, which will be directed by Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell.
As one of the most illustrious composers of our time, Foster’s skill set of creating hits, writing indelible melodies, and building dramatic moments, has primed him for this third round. “I think Broadway and I are a perfect ft,” he says. “The story becomes the cowriter. It’s a new adventure and creative outlet for me that I’ve always believed I could do and now it’s become a reality It’s also exciting because, as a producer, I’ve spent 35 years in a room with no windows, churning out music. Now I plan to immerse myself in New York theater culture and learn the ropes slowly, and I’m not afraid of that.”
Foster seems constitutionally incapable of resting on his laurels, and his relentless drive has propelled him throughout his career Few other individuals can claim to have their fngerprints on more major moments in all of popular music than David Foster. He has created hit songs and award-winning gold and platinum albums for a diverse array of artists including Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Seal, Chaka Khan, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Chicago, Hall & Oates, Brandy, ’N Sync, Boz Scaggs, and Gloria Estefan. He has escorted singers who have straddled both pop and classical styles like Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban into the mainstream. He has created culture-defning soundtracks for blockbuster flms like “The Bodyguard,” “Urban Cowboy,” and “St. Elmo’s Fire” and crafted timeless holiday classics, including perennial best-sellers like Josh Groban’s “Noel,” Michael Bublé’s “Christmas,” Celine Dion’s “These Are Special Times,” Rod Stewart’s “Merry Christmas Baby,” Andrea Bocelli’s “My Christmas,” and Mary J. Blige’s “A Mary Christmas.”
For his remarkable work, Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including three for “Producer of the Year,” an Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe, and has racked up three Oscar nominations for “Best Original Song.” He has also earned a reputation as a keen spotter of new talent, playing a key role in the discovery and career launches of Celine Dion, Josh Groban, and Michael Bublé.
Refecting upon receiving a star on the Walk of Fame, Foster says, “One hundred years from now, my great-grandchildren will go, ‘Hey, there’s my greatgrandpa,’ and having a star next to The Beatles… outside the building where I frst got signed… that’s perfect.”
Katharine McPhee is one of a handful of artists who takes the lead in a career that includes flm, television, Broadway, recording and concert tours.
Katharine frst burst onto the scene in 2006, where a successful run on Season Five of “American Idol” made her a household name.
As an actress, she is well-known to television audiences for starring as Paige Dineen on the CBS spy drama “Scorpion” (2014-2018), and as one of the leads in NBC’s musical drama “Smash” (20122013), executive produced by Steven Spielberg. She also starred in the Netfix comedy series, “Country Comfort” (2021) and guest-starred in the series “CSI: NY,” “Community,” “Family Guy,” and “Ugly Betty.”
As a singer, Katharine is renowned for her powerhouse presence, and show-stopping performances. In 2006, her frst single, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny,” debuted at number two on Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales chart. Propelled by the gold-certifed single, “Over It,” her 2007 self-titled album debuted at number two on the Billboard Top 200.
In 2010, she released two records, “Unbroken” and “Christmas is the Time To Say I Love You,” which covered many yuletide classics and featured an original Christmas song, “It’s Not Christmas Without You.” That year, her rendition of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” also climbed the charts as a top-fve holiday hit. She went on to independently release 2015’s “Hysteria” to much fan praise. In 2017, McPhee reimagined, recharged, and reinvigorated a host of timeless standards on her ffth full-length album, “I Fall In Love Too Easily,” produced by jazz musician, Don Was. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
A sought-after performer, Katharine has taken the stage for various PBS broadcasts throughout the years, including “Foster and Friends,” “Chris Botti In Boston,” and headlining her own “SoundStage” special.
The Spring of 2018, McPhee made her Broadway debut starring as Jenna in the hit musical “Waitress,” featuring music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles. She then moved on to originate the leading role in the West End production of the show from February through June 2019. She later returned to see it through the fnal weeks of its original Broadway run, starring from November 2019 through the show’s closing on January 5, 2020.
In addition to her acting and singing career, McPhee is a passionate philanthropist, having served as an ambassador for organizations such as buildOn, Malaria No More, and Feeding America. Katharine continues to perform at many charitable events including The David Foster Foundation, of which she is an avid supporter.
A veteran of the concert stage, Katharine performs to sold out audiences around the world. Most recently Katharine paired with David Foster to create a show called “An Intimate Evening with David Foster and Katharine McPhee.” This in-demand show has garnered rave reviews; they perform to sold out concert venues in the US and oversees.
During the 2022 Christmas season, Katharine released Part One of her Christmas album called “Christmas Songs.” A collection of Christmas classics produced by David Foster, Part Two will be released Christmas 2023.
For more than two decades, the legendary rock band Counting Crows have enchanted listeners worldwide with their intensely soulful and intricate take on timeless rock & roll. Exploding onto the music scene in 1993 with their multi-platinum breakout album, “August and Everything After,” the band has gone on to release seven studio albums, selling more than 20 million records worldwide, and is revered as one of the world’s most pre-eminent live touring rock bands.
In October 1996, the band’s double-platinum sophomore studio album, “Recovering the Satellites,” debuted at number one and further solidifed their growing reputation as one of the leading American alternative rock bands in the world. A follow up to their early success; Counting Crows went on to release “This Desert Life” (1999), “Hard Candy” (2002), “Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings” (2008), “Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation)” (2012), “Echoes of the Outlaw Roadshow” (2013), and “Somewhere Under Wonderland” (2014.) In 2004, Counting Crows recorded the chart-topping “Accidentally in Love” for the animated motion picture “Shrek 2.” The instant success of the track earned them an Academy Award nomination for “Best Original Song” at the 2005 Academy Awards, a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Original Song” and a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.”
In September 2014, Counting Crows released their critically acclaimed seventh studio album, “Somewhere Under Wonderland,” which debuted at number 10 on the charts and was heralded by The Daily Telegraph as “the best collection of songs since their debut.” The album consisted of nine sprawling tracks around rich sonic tapestries, which yielded some of the most grandiose yet intimate songs Counting Crows had recorded to date. 2018 marked 25 years since the band’s inception and sent Adam Duritz, Jim Bogios, David Bryson, Charlie Gillingham, David Immergluck, Millard Powers, and Dan Vickrey back on the road for the “25 Years and Counting” tour. In 2021, Counting Crows ranked number eight on Billboards’ “Greatest of All Time: Adult Alternative Artists” 25th anniversary chart.
After seven years, Adam Duritz and Counting Crows released “Butter Miracle: Suite One” in May 2021 to rave reviews. The band also kicked off their frst tour since 2018 “The Butter Miracle Tour” in 2021, with sell-out performances across North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The band just wrapped the 56-date “Banshee Season Tour,” featuring special guests Dashboard Confessional and Frank Turner.

He is a 7th grader at Stargate Middle School and was diagnosed in 2019 with type 1 diabetes. He has three brothers (including an older brother who has been living with type 1 diabetes for 18 years) and two golden retrievers who he also considers siblings.
Good evening.
My name is Joshua Lebsock and I have lived with type 1 diabetes for four years. I am honored to lead you in prayer tonight.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for bringing us together for this amazing evening.
I pray for all the scientists that are working on fnding the cure for type 1 diabetes, for everyone who lives with type 1 diabetes and all the families with people that are newly diagnosed, because diabetes can be a lot to learn about and get used to.
I pray for a cure, and for everyone struggling with type 1. I also pray for those who don’t have a support system or who can’t afford their supplies.
Thank you to the Davis family who created the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes that helps me and my brother who has had type 1 for 18 years live a normal life. I am thankful for the insulin that keeps me alive, technology like my pump and CGM, and everyone here tonight for showing up for this event.
In God’s name we pray, amen.

The BDC prevention team is dedicated to preventing type 1 diabetes and stopping disease progression by preserving insulin production before and after diagnosis. The BDC is one of the top recruiting type 1 diabetes TrialNet Clinical Centers and was involved in the TrialNet study that led to the FDA approval of the frst immunomodulatory drug for type 1 diabetes, Tzield. Since the approval of Tzield for delaying onset of stage three type 1 diabetes in November 2022, we opened an early type 1 diabetes clinic to identify individuals eligible for treatment. Individuals with islet autoimmunity and concern for dysglycemia are offered metabolic staging, and if confrmed at stage two type 1 diabetes, treatment with Tzield infusions. These 14-day infusions are done in the BDC Immunotherapeutic Infusion Center under the supervision of experienced nurses, NPs and MDs.
The Panther Program®, is based out of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, was founded by Laurel Messer, PhD and currently led by Cari Berget, RN, MPH, CDCES. The Panther Program® leverages the experience of their team’s certifed diabetes care and education specialists, endocrinologists, and researchers to distill down the most vital information needed for healthcare professionals to understand and
work with diabetes devices. The Panther team collectively has over 100 years of experience with insulin pumps, CGMs, and automated insulin delivery devices. The Panther Program® was named as a nod to the legacy of diabetes education at the BDC and the Pink Panther book series.
The Barbara Davis Center’s research endeavors encompass the exploration of type 1 diabetes causes, early autoimmunity detection, prevention, and timely intervention. Clinical faculty members at the BDC are actively devising fresh strategies and treatments to enhance patient care outcomes. These encompass preventative measures for complications arising from both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
The Barbara Davis Center investigators consistently contribute to expanding knowledge about T1D identifcation, causation, treatment, and outcomes. Some recent achievements include:
• BDC investigators were actively involved in clinical trials pivotal for FDA approval of therapies and devices, including fve hybrid closed-loop insulin dosing systems, as well as new drugs including insulin FiAsp, insulin Lyumjev, Weekly basal insulin, Inhaled insulin (Afrezza), hepatic directed insulin (lysosome) and nasal glucagon (Baqsimi)
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) rates at diabetes diagnosis among children have risen to 59% (2017) and over 60% during the COVID-19 pandemic
• Enteroviral infections serve as predictors of islet autoimmunity
• Autoimmunity Screening for Kids (ASK) study reveals early T1D in 1% of Denver children and undiagnosed celiac disease in 2%
• Teplizumab treatment may delay the need for insulin up to 1-2 years in people with early stage (antibody positive) type 1 diabetes
The Barbara Davis Center secured the competitive NIH P30 Diabetes Research Center award in 2020, providing core resources, enrichment programs, and pilot & feasibility grants to facilitate interdisciplinary cooperation among researchers in diabetes and related areas of endocrinology and metabolism. The BDC’s pivotal contributions to high-profle studies centered on the pancreatic islet in T1D include:
• Discovery that methyldopa inhibits diabetes-specifc activation of HLA-DQ8 molecules
• Elucidation of RNA processing’s role in regulating islet function in T1D
• Development of insulin B-chain fragments as superagonists for T cells in T1D
• Novel techniques to enhance maturation and functionality of human stem cell-derived beta cells
• Modulation of T1D progression through CAR T cells targeting a pathogenic MHC Class II peptide complex
• In vitro generation of thymic epithelial cells to model T1D autoimmunity
• Utilization of novel technologies to identify new biomarkers for early T1D prediction
• Leadership and Service Centers

Established in 1977, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) serves as the fundraising arm for the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) located in Aurora, Colorado. The Barbara Davis Center caters to nearly 8,000 patients, engaging in extensive research focused on fnding a cure for diabetes via stem cell therapy and other methodologies. Additionally, the Center delves into diabetes technology, complications, prevention, and management. A noteworthy 40% of BDC patients lack insurance coverage or are underinsured, while 35% live at or below the poverty threshold. Funding from the Children’s Diabetes Foundation not only supports these patients and BDC initiatives but also fuels CDF programs.
The physicians at the Barbara Davis Center possess a distinctive vantage point on this condition, enabling them to observe every facet of it up close. This proximity frequently sparks innovative research concepts that might not secure grants without prior evidence of success from other studies. In instances where grant funding is unavailable, such research can stall. However, at the BDC, physicians beneft from the fnancial support of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. This backing empowers them to bring these projects to fruition or generate preliminary results essential for progressing to the next phase and obtaining grants. This facilitates the effcient advancement of the feld of research.
Managing diabetes and acquiring necessary supplies amount to a staggering $20,000 per year, a fnancial burden that can devastate families. These supplies are imperative, as individuals with type 1 diabetes cannot survive without insulin. The Helping Hand program steps in to aid fnancially challenged families by providing essential diabetes supplies, appointments, education, and technology required to effectively manage type 1 diabetes. Furthermore, the program extends assistance for ambulance transportation, hospital bills, and even monthly rent, ensuring these families can afford not only the needs of the individual with type 1 diabetes but also those of the entire family.
With deep gratitude, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation acknowledges the contributions of the nearly 300 dedicated volunteers in The Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. These individuals consistently offer their time and talents to bolster the Foundation’s growth. They orchestrate engaging events such as the Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show, Run for the Ring 5K & Kids Fun Run, Boo Bash Halloween event, and a soccer camp for type 1 kids hosted biannually. Additionally, they set up booths at different events to spread awareness and educate the community. Undoubtedly, this volunteer group forms an integral part of CDF.
The Children’s Diabetes Foundation aims to provide emotional support to families as well. Since 2016, the Foundation has been hosting monthly support groups where families can convene to discuss life with type 1 diabetes. Individuals with type 1 diabetes are twice as likely to experience depression. Offering them a platform to communicate with others who understand their experiences can be transformative. Presently, CDF hosts two support groups – one in the Denver Metro area and another online. These groups facilitate open discussions about the challenges of living with type 1 diabetes.
Earlier this year, the sixth annual EPIC Diabetes Conference took place. This one-day patient conference was designed for individuals living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, along with their friends, family, and caregivers. Attendees engaged in sessions and directly connected with leading endocrinologists and diabetes specialists from Colorado. Attendees overwhelmingly expressed their satisfaction and appreciation, grateful for the sense of shared experience in dealing with the condition.
Continuing its commitment, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation collaborates with the Barbara Davis Center in hosting the Ways to Achieve Targets in Diabetes Care Conference (ATDC), held annually in Keystone, Colorado. The 33rd annual ATDC brought together over 400 healthcare professionals from 40 states and six countries for a four-day span. The conference aimed to impart the most current insights into diabetes care, technology, and research to enhance patient care.
Presently, there exists widespread naivety about diabetes and the daily challenges faced by individuals living with the condition. CDF remains resolute in raising awareness and educating the public to dispel misconceptions. The goal is to eradicate statements like, “You have diabetes because you ate too much sugar,” or, “You can’t eat that.” These stereotypes persist in the public consciousness despite their inaccuracy. By sharing the authentic experiences of those with type 1 diabetes, the aim is to bridge this knowledge gap and extend support to those living with the condition.
The uniqueness of the Barbara Davis Center lies in its comprehensive approach to patient care. Within its walls, patients can access a diverse array of professionals, including doctors, physicians, nutritionists, social workers, psychologists, prescription managers, scientifc researchers, and more. This integrated approach ensures every aspect of a patient’s diabetes care is addressed comprehensively. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation proudly raises funds for this remarkable facility, which is making a profound impact in the realm of diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that impacts the body’s ability to convert food into energy. The condition affects over 37 million individuals in the United States, with around 1.6 million having type 1 diabetes (T1D). Formerly referred to as childhood or juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes often emerges in children, teenagers, and young adults, though it can manifest at any age. Approximately 1.5 million Americans, or about 6.9 percent, are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes annually, and this fgure is on the rise.
You’re likely familiar with insulin and glucose, but how do they function? Following a meal, the body breaks down food into glucose (sugar) and nutrients, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream. This leads to an increase in blood sugar levels, prompting the pancreas to release insulin. In people with diabetes, the body either cannot produce enough insulin or does not respond to it effectively. Consequently, sugar remains in the bloodstream instead of entering cells, where it’s utilized as energy.
As a result, individuals with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin regularly to counteract high blood sugar levels. This involves multiple doses of insulin administered throughout the day, either through an insulin pump worn on the body or by injections. While these measures are benefcial for maintaining stable
blood sugar levels, they are not foolproof. Effective diabetes management encompasses numerous factors, including diet, physical activity, hormonal changes, stress levels, and more.
Another signifcant concern for individuals with diabetes is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which is a side effect of the medications used to manage this disease. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include blurry vision, trembling, sweating, impaired speech, irritability, drowsiness, and disoriented behavior. In severe cases, very low blood sugar can lead to unconsciousness or seizures, posing immediate danger or death.
Regrettably, there is currently no cure for diabetes. Once diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, individuals will have the condition for life unless a cure is discovered. The risk of developing diabetes is higher than that of most other chronic illnesses. It’s estimated that someone new is diagnosed with diabetes approximately every 17 seconds in the Unites States. Due to these challenges, the Barbara Davis Center remains dedicated to enhancing diabetes care and actively seeking a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Many of us may remember the movie “Steel Magnolias” released over 30 years ago (1989), where Julia Roberts plays the role of someone with type 1 diabetes. Most women with T1D were discouraged from becoming pregnant due to poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Fortunately, we have come a long way in the past 30 years with the availability of many new insulin analogs (long-acting and rapidacting insulins) and other technological advances that include continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), insulin pumps, and development of automatic insulin delivery systems (AID).
When a child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), the start-up education and appointment fees can be $5,000.
Insulin is necessary for a person with T1D to survive. Although current monthly insulin can cost up to $1,200/month, starting in 2022 Colorado House Bill 21-1307 created an insulin affordability program which caps prices at $100/ month for each basal or prandial insulin.
MDI therapy typically consists of three or more insulin injections per day. Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) allow a patient’s glucose values to be monitored every fve minutes, improving glucose control and reducing hypoglycemia, especially at night.
Total annual cost of MDI can exceed $8,000 per year. Total cost of MDI during pregnancy can exceed $11,000.
$1,300 4-5 clinical visits/year (including eye exam)
$2,500 Insulin & Glucagon
$3,000 CGM (can cost between $1,000-$5,000)
$1,200 CGM Supplies (sensors, transmitters)
$300 Labs
$8,300 Total Annual Cost (MDI)
$4,500 1-2 clinical visits/month (including eye visits)
$1,875 Insulin & Glucagon
$3,000 CGM (can cost between 1,000-$5,000)
$900 CGM Supplies (sensors, transmitters)
$1,000 Labs
$11,275 Total Annual Cost (MDI)
Insulin pumps (a preferred therapy for T1D) allow a patient to get a catheter every 2-3 days instead of injecting multiple times a day and can give small doses to manage type 1 diabetes more minutely. The startup costs for an insulin pump and supplies can be $5,000 - $8,000 depending on the pump. Total cost for insulin pump therapy can exceed $11,000 per year.
$1,300 4 visits/year (including eye visit)
$1,500 Insulin & Glucagon
$5,500 Insulin Pump ($4,500 - $6,500)
$3,500 Insulin Pump Supplies (infusion lines, syringes, batteries)
$700 Labs
$12,500 Total Annual Cost
When the body does not have enough insulin, blood sugars are too high and ketones build up on the blood stream. A person with diabetes may go into a dangerous physical state known as diabetic ketoacidosis and coma (the most common cause of death in the past). A hospital stay for this can easily cost over $10,000 per day.
If blood sugars are too low, a patient may go unconscious, have a seizure, or in extreme cases, die. Glucagon kits (injectable or nasal glucagon) are the last resort to save a patient when they are not able to chew or swallow carbs and sugars to raise their blood sugar. These kits cost $300 per year and need to be replaced every 12 months.
Stem cell research is looking incredibly promising in regard to a cure, but $40,000 is required to produce enough beta cells for one patient.
$75,000 and above will support a post-doctoral fellow for one year at the Barbara Davis Center
$100,000 and above is needed to pilot a new, groundbreaking research project for one year.
(Diabetes fellowship for one year)
There is a dire need of doctors who are trained to care for individuals with diabetes. The BDC and University of Colorado started a one year diabetes fellowship program four years ago.
Cost is around $100,000 per fellow for one year
• Urine glucose and ketone testing was the only method to monitor diabetes control levels and it was far from accurate.
• Back in 1978 diabetes affected more than 10 million Americans. 1 million whom had juvenile diabetes.
• Diabetes was the third leading cause of death.
• Complications such as loss of limbs, end-stage kidney disease, and blindness were thought to be inevitable.
• A person with diabetes must avoid pure sugar foods and observe a low-fat diet in 1978.
• Young women with type 1 were discouraged to become pregnant due to poor health outcomes for mother and the baby.
• We had no idea how to predict who will develop type 1 diabetes.
• Type 1 diabetes patients use continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) that report glucose readings every one-fve minute(s), which can be read on smartphones, smart watches, and shared with family members.
• In 2023, diabetes affects more than 37 million Americans. 1.6 million whom have type 1 diabetes.
• Diabetes dropped to #8 on the list of leading cause of death in the United States of America.
• There is no strong evidence that a low carb diet is safe or benefcial for people with type 1 diabetes.
• Youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are twice as likely to suffer from depression and up to four times as likely to experience disordered eating – this has not changed over the past 40 years.
• Everyday women with type 1 diabetes can have healthy pregnancies and create families of happy, healthy children.
• FDA approval of the frst immunomodulatory drug for type 1 diabetes, Teplizumab (Tzield), to delay the onset of stage 3 type 1 diabetes in people with stage 2 (early stage with positive antibodies) type 1 diabetes.
• We can accurately predict who will develop type 1 diabetes. Those at the highest risk can receive monoclonal antibody (Tzield) to delay insulin need by 3 years, on average.
• Within the next year, a continuous glucose monitor will be able to report both glucose and ketone levels continuously up to 15 days.
• We will better understand how to prevent the autoimmune attack on insulin-producing cells before it happens.
• How we will block and/or reverse an active autoimmune destruction of insulin.
• Develop better HCL systems that may be a fully Closed-Loop system.
• Replace destroyed beta cells with alternative sources of insulin-producing cells while protecting them from autoimmunity.
