he Children’s Diabetes Foundation is delighted to celebrate the outstanding success of The Carousel Ball held on October 11, 2025. CHALLENGING WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW OVERCOMING MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT TYPE 1 DIABETES Sponsored by Sanofi

B

efore their type 1 diabetes (T1D) diagnoses, John Boyce and Caroline Harrison had misconceptions about the disease. John believed the health issues he was experiencing must have been due to lifestyle factors, while Caroline thought she was past the age of concern for a condition she associated with children. Neither expected T1D to be part of their story.

John’s journey began with confusion. As an active and health-conscious adult, he was surprised when standard blood work showed a high A1C and his doctor diagnosed him with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Knowing that T2D is impacted by lifestyle factors, John changed his diet and adjusted his exercise routine, determined to improve his condition. But no matter how hard he worked, his numbers continued to rise. John knew something wasn’t adding up. After requesting to be screened for T1D and undergoing further testing, John learned he had been misdiagnosed with T2D and was actually living with Stage 2 T1D. While John was shocked by the diagnosis, he was relieved to finally have clarity.

Caroline’s realization came in a quieter moment. A graduate student in Denver, Caroline mistakenly thought T1D was a juvenile disease. As she entered her 20s, she thought she was no longer at risk. Caroline was building her career and focused on the future when she shared with a trusted mentor that her father was living with T1D. Armed with the knowledge that family history is a risk factor for the disease, Caroline’s mentor encouraged her to get screened. She decided to follow through with screening and further testing, and soon after was diagnosed with Stage 1 T1D. In that moment, Caroline’s perspective changed – she had not “outgrown” her risk, and she was not “in the clear.”

Although John’s and Caroline’s stories are quite different, they both underscore the importance of information. Access to additional testing uncovered the truth and gave them the opportunity to make informed decisions about their health, before reaching a crisis point. After

talking with their respective doctors about their options, John and Caroline separately in their journeys, arrived at the same decision – to receive TZIELD (teplizumab-mzwv), a prescription medication indicated to delay the onset of Stage 3 T1D for people 8 years and older who have Stage 2 T1D. The insights gained from screening combined with the option to receive TZIELD allowed John and Caroline’s T1D journeys to become less about uncertainty and more about empowerment. For Caroline, discovering the option to potentially delay the onset of insulindependent T1D and working with a care team to monitor her progression from Stage 1 to Stage 2 T1D before ultimately pursuing TZIELD left her feeling less like a “sitting duck”. For John, who was juggling life with a newborn and a toddler, learning that there was an option for him to put off the 24/7 disease management that accompanies Stage 3 T1D, especially after receiving a false diagnosis, filled him with hope.

For both, their experiences with T1D forced them to confront realities they had not anticipated. John realized that T1D can be misdiagnosed as T2D, due to overlapping symptoms; however, unlike in T2D, no amount of exercise or dietary changes can stop the progression of T1D. Caroline accepted that T1D is not just a childhood disease and that anyone can develop autoimmune T1D, no matter their

age, family history, or lifestyle choices.

TZIELD may cause serious side effects. These include:

Cytokine release syndrome (CRS). Signs and symptoms may start during the first 5 days of TZIELD treatment and could include fever, nausea, feeling tired (fatigue), headache, muscle and joint pain, or increased liver enzymes in your blood. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you develop any signs and symptoms of CRS during treatment with TZIELD

Decrease in white blood cells. TZIELD may cause a decrease in a type of white blood cell called lymphocytes. A decrease in white blood cells is a serious, but common side effect that can affect your body’s ability to fight infections. A decrease in white blood cell counts can happen after your first dose. Your white blood cell counts will start to go back to normal after your fifth dose of TZIELD. Some people may develop longer and more severe decreases in lymphocytes

What is the most important information I should know about TZIELD?

Your healthcare provider will do blood tests to check your liver and your complete blood counts before you start treatment and during treatment with TZIELD. During and after your treatment with TZIELD, your healthcare provider will check for serious side effects, as well as other side effects, and treat you as needed.

Your healthcare provider may temporarily or completely stop your treatment with TZIELD, if you develop liver problems, have a serious infection, or if your blood counts stay too low.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before receiving TZIELD? Before or after receiving TZIELD, tell your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, including if you: • •

have a serious infection or an infection that does not go away or keeps coming back have recently received or are scheduled to receive an immunization (vaccine). TZIELD may affect how well a vaccine works. Tell your doctor that you are receiving TZIELD before receiving a vaccine are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. TZIELD may harm your unborn baby. Do not receive TZIELD during pregnancy and at least 30 days before a planned pregnancy are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if TZIELD passes into your breast milk and if it can harm your baby. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby if you receive TZIELD

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

What are the possible side effects of TZIELD? The most common side effects of TZIELD include: • rash • leukopenia (decrease in white blood cell counts) • headache These are not all of the possible side effects of TZIELD. MEET THE DOCTOR GREG FORLENZA , MD,

PEDIATRIC ENDOCRINOLOGY, DIABETES, AND TECHNOLOGY A PASSION FOR DIABETES CARE AT THE BDC We are proud to highlight the incredible individuals at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) who dedicate themselves to improving the lives of those living with diabetes. We sat down with Dr. Greg Forlenza whose journey into diabetes care is as inspiring as his daily work.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO DIABETES CARE? I’ve been involved in diabetes since my first year of medical school. I originally thought I wanted to work with children, but I didn’t know anything about type 1 diabetes. At the University of Florida, I volunteered at a diabetes summer camp—and that changed everything. I worked with the same group of campers for seven years, all through medical school and residency. The kids, along with several incredible mentors, pulled me into the field.

I’ve always been more interested in technology than biology, and even back then I remember thinking: kids are wearing pumps and sensors—why aren’t these devices talking to each other? That early curiosity led me to meet leaders in automated insulin delivery, including the team in Denver. That’s ultimately how I ended up dedicating my career to diabetes technology.

DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL TYPE 1 DIABETES CONNECTION? Not in the traditional way. My connection comes from camp. I’ve volunteered every summer since med school, and it’s a huge part of my life. My wife still jokes that she knew I was serious about her when I made her attend camp with me—and sit through my one-hour PowerPoint on diabetes management.

Camp has shaped how I understand families, especially parents. It gives me a sense of what life is really like outside the clinic.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH THE BARBARA DAVIS CENTER? I joined right out of fellowship in July 2015.

WHAT MAKES YOUR DEPARTMENT AND TEAM AT THE BDC SO UNIQUE? In research, everything starts with a shared mission— and our team truly believes that technology can change families’ lives. That belief gets us through the tough parts: the long forms, the regulatory hurdles, the training sessions. We do it because we see the impact almost immediately.

Many of our team members have type 1 themselves or have a family member with type 1, so the work is personal. Families often tell us, “This device gave me my first good night’s sleep since diagnosis,” or “This made us comfortable letting our child go to a sleepover.” Those moments validate every bit of effort.

WHAT HAS CHANGED IN DIABETES CARE SINCE YOU HAVE BEEN PRACTICING? The pace of progress has been astounding. When I started, we were testing early artificial pancreas systems in the hospital with IV lines and 24/7 physician monitoring. Regulators literally said, “You will never be able to do this.”

Fast-forward 10 years, and automated insulin delivery is standard of care. At the BDC, more than 75% of pediatric patients use these systems—around 3,000 kids. Watching that transformation from “this is too dangerous” to “this is routine” has been remarkable.

TELL ME ABOUT AN EXPERIENCE THAT HAS IMPACTED YOU AS A PROVIDER.

WHAT MOTIVATIONAL ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE WITH TYPE 1?

emergency room at diagnosis. The mom was eight months pregnant, and so was my wife, so their situation really hit home.

That little boy went on to become one of the first children under six in the world to use automated insulin delivery in clinical trials. I saw them every month for years. Today he’s 12, loves coding, and dreams of becoming a diabetes device designer—using his experience to help others. Seeing technology change a family’s quality of life that profoundly keeps me inspired.

Your experience gives you power. You can use it to make a difference for others. The tools we’re teaching today will look completely different a year from now—and five years from now, diabetes management will be dramatically easier.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS?

We’re developing AI-driven systems that won’t require carb counting, meal dosing, or manual tuning. Blood sugar management will become more automated, safer, and less intrusive.

My hope is that none of our kids will face complications in the future—and that they’ll live long, healthy lives with fewer burdens.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN WHEN YOU ARE NOT AT THE BDC? Most of my time is spent being a dad to three daughters—11, 9, and 7—who keep me fully immersed in dance, K-Pop, and all things creative. I’m a big Broncos fan, a Georgia Tech and Florida football fan, and I play video games and Dungeons & Dragons.

TELL ME A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF. I’m a full-on girl dad—ballet rehearsals, hair buns, K-Pop playlists, all of it. And yes, I know the lyrics to the K-Pop Demon Hunter soundtrack.

HONORING A HALF-CENTURY OF STRENGTH THE CHILDREN’S DIABETES FOUNDATION AND BARBARA DAVIS CENTER FOR DIABETES HOST 50-YEAR MEDAL CEREMONY

T

he Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) proudly hosted a special Medal Ceremony recognizing an extraordinary group of individuals— patients of the BDC who have lived with type 1 diabetes for 50 years or more. This milestone event celebrated not only longevity, but the remarkable perseverance, courage, and spirit that define each medal recipient’s journey.

The ceremony brought together families, clinicians, and supporters to honor these individuals, their families, and the providers who have navigated decades of change in diabetes care. Attendees reflected on the evolution of treatment—from early, limited tools to today’s advanced technologies— acknowledging the determination and resilience required to reach this milestone.

The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the impact of compassionate clinical care and the essential role donor generosity plays in advancing treatment and improving quality of life.

As the celebration concluded, it left the community inspired by the strength of these medalists and motivated to continue pushing toward a future of improved outcomes, and ultimately a cure for everyone living with type 1 diabetes.

ATDC 2025 HIGHLIGHTS PRACTICAL STRATEGIES AND EMERGING INNOVATIONS IN DIABETES CARE

T

he 34th Annual Practical Ways to Achieve Targets in Diabetes Care (ATDC) Conference, held from July 23–26, 2025, once again proved to be a cornerstone event for advancing education and innovation in diabetes care. Over the past three decades, the ATDC Conference has solidified its reputation as an essential resource for healthcare professionals focused on diabetes management and cutting-edge technology.

This year’s conference brought together 455 attendees from across the United States and around the globe, representing a wide range of disciplines, including endocrinologists, internists, pediatricians, family physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dietitians, social workers, medical residents, fellows, and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES). With 80% of attendees identifying as healthcare providers, the conference continued to foster robust engagement and interaction.

Technology & AI in Diabetes Care: The conference featured major sessions on the role of artificial intelligence in diabetes care including how AI can support clinical decisionmaking and insulin delivery.

Automated and Alternate Insulin Delivery: Plenaries addressed automated insulindelivery methods, with updates on pump and continuous glucose monitor (CGM) integration, offering practical guidance for implementing these in clinical care.

Expanding CGM & Pump Use — Bridging Access Gaps: A key focus was on closing disparities in access to diabetes technology, and on broadening CGM and pump use for more patients.

Special-Needs and Special-Population Care: Sessions explored diabetes management in pregnancy (gestational diabetes and menstrualcycle changes), and unique care challenges in pediatric, adolescent, and other special populations.

Real-World Clinical Management: Metrics & Data Interpretation: Presentations covered practical issues like interpreting CGM/pump data downloads, glucose metrics (e.g. Time in Range vs HbA1c), and how to apply this data to improve everyday care.

Therapeutic Strategy Updates and Comorbidity Considerations: The program included content on newer therapies (e.g., use of GLP-1 analogs across diabetes types) and integrated care for comorbidities; reflecting a growing emphasis on holistic, individualized patient care.

WORKSHOPS AND TECHNOLOGY SESSIONS

One of the most celebrated aspects of this year’s event was the Hands-On Technology Session, which provided attendees with the opportunity to interact with cutting-edge devices, including CGMs, insulin pumps, automated insulin delivery (AID) systems, and hybrid closed-loop technology. This interactive format allowed participants to gain practical skills and insights they could immediately apply in their practice.

CLINICAL TRIALS AND EMERGING THERAPIES

The 2025 program highlighted advancing frontiers in diabetes treatment, with sessions exploring progress in stem-cell-derived islet therapies, emerging metabolic-modulating agents, and the expanding role of GLP-1-based therapies across diabetes types.

tools and next-generation glucose and ketone monitoring—are shaping future standards of care. Conversations also emphasized the translation of these emerging therapies into realworld practice, including challenges related to access, safety, and long-term clinical outcomes.

ENHANCEMENTS TO THE 2025 PROGRAM

Building on the success of the new format in 2024’s schedule, the 2025 ATDC Conference offered a slightly revised format to optimize learning and engagement. The event opened with a full-day session on Wednesday and concluded with a half-day session ending at lunch on Saturday. This structure provides a focused yet comprehensive experience across the four-day program.

Attendees saw more interactive sessions, handson workshops, and opportunities for peer-topeer networking. The 2025 program emphasized integrating CGM and pump data into EMR systems, leveraging advanced AI algorithms for individualized diabetes care, and exploring emerging therapeutic strategies for both T1D and T2D. With these updates, the conference continues to combine cutting-edge science with practical tools for clinical practice.

As we look ahead to next year, the 35th Annual ATDC Conference, scheduled for July 8-11, 2026.

The 2026 ATDC Conference will explore many facets of treating patients with both T1D and T2D. We will review the use of dual continuous glucose and ketone monitors in both T1D and T2D management, especially in the inpatient setting. Continuing the theme of technology in diabetes management, there will be multiple sessions, across plenaries, on advances in hybrid closed-loop systems, and their emerging role managing T2D. Developing new algorithms

he Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation was delighted to award $4,000 Charlotte Tucker Scholarships (CTS) to 20 outstanding students from the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, all of whom are embarking on higher education to chase their dreams.

These scholars are entering diverse fields, driven by ambition and resilience. We celebrate these remarkable students as they step into a promising future.

A special reception for the Charlotte Tucker Scholarship recipients was held on Monday, June 2, 2025 at the Joy Burns Center on the University of Denver campus. Guild President Carol Hamer opened the event, welcoming recipients, their families, and guests. Christina Finch, the guest speaker, encouraged students with stories of her own life experience, exhibiting the ways that type 1 diabetes and the support from the Children’s Diabetes Foundation have set her up for success in facing other life challenges.

Stephen Edmonds and Brenda Neyman, the Scholarship Selection Committee Co-Chairs, went on to introduce each awardee, sharing personal anecdotes about them and presenting them with certificates of recognition. The scholars then each expressed gratitude to The Guild and the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, sharing stories that were both inspiring and humorous, reflecting their resilience through challenging times.

2025 DENVER WOMEN OF DISTINCTION DANA DAVIS HONORED BY GIRL SCOUTS OF COLORADO Each year, Girl Scouts of Colorado honors 11 exceptional Denver metro area women as Women of Distinction (WOD) ; one of these remarkable women is named the Woman of Distinction Gold in recognition of a lifetime of achievement that has made a significant, lasting impact on our community. This year’s honorees were selected by a committee of previous Women of Distinction honorees and chosen based on their contributions to the community, both professionally and personally. These women join a network of more than 500 WOD alums. They are shining examples of corporate, civic, and philanthropic leaders, who serve as inspirations for our female leaders of tomorrow.

Dana Davis, Executive Director of Children’s Diabetes Foundation - Davis is a leader, philanthropist, and advocate dedicated to improving the lives of those with Type 1 diabetes and chronic illnesses.

As Executive Director of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation for 10 years, she has helped raise more than $100 million for research, treatment, and education. She played a key role in establishing the Barbara Davis Center, a world-renowned diabetes care and research institution. A former kindergarten teacher of 15 years, Davis later founded a high-fashion comfort shoe line sold at Nordstrom and Macy’s. She serves on the board of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and previously served on the Mattel Children’s Hospital board. She has also spoken at healthcare conferences. Living with Type 1 diabetes for 50 years, along with multiple sclerosis, Hashimoto’s, and celiac disease, she has first-hand experience with chronic illness. CELEBRATING DANA DAVIS’S 50-YEAR T1D JOURNEY This year marks an extraordinary milestone for Dana Davis, Executive Director of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, as she celebrates 50 years living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Diagnosed at just seven years old, Dana’s life with diabetes became the catalyst for her family’s unwavering commitment to improving care, advancing research, and to support families facing T1D. That commitment ultimately led to the founding of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes and the Children’s Diabetes Foundation.

For five decades, Dana has lived with resilience, determination, and hope — and she has transformed her personal journey into a powerful mission. Through her leadership, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation has raised critical funds, expanded programs, and amplified awareness for type 1 diabetes, positively impacting countless lives. Dana’s story is a profound reminder of what is possible when courage, compassion, and purpose come together, and we are honored to celebrate her remarkable legacy and continued dedication to a future without diabetes.

THE STRENGTH OF WOMEN Type 1 diabetes is both a personal and professional calling. As the executive director of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, Dana Davis oversees a team that runs operations, events and finances for the organization, which is the fundraising, care and educational arm of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. A typical day for Dana involves meeting potential donors and sponsors, conducting tours of the BDC, and getting updates on events that range from medical conferences to celebrity-studded galas such as the Carousel Ball, held annually in Denver.

Here are some of the top stories from July through December 2025.

EXERCISE EDUCATION FOR DIABETES INCREASING CONFIDENCE AND OVERCOMING BARRIERS TO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES (T1D) The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) is partnering with Dr. Dessi Zaharieva, PhD, CEP, CDCES at Stanford University to offer an online group education class called SPEED: Sports, Play and Exercise Education for Diabetes. This class discusses some practical strategies to managing glucose levels around exercise and physical activity with T1D. Some topics include insulin adjustments to prevent hypoglycemia, fueling properly for sport, and providing families the opportunity to share experiences and ask questions to our exercise physiologist and sports dietitian instructors. Classes were offered in fall/winter 2025-2026 as part of a pilot program, with hopes of making SPEED class part of our regular offerings at the BDC pediatric clinic.

BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL WORKSHOP The Beyond High School Program, developed by the team at the Barbara Davis Center, supports graduating seniors and young adults with diabetes as they prepare to manage their condition independently. Transitioning to college, starting a new job, or navigating other major life changes can be challenging, making a solid diabetes management plan essential.

The workshop also offered participants the chance to connect with former program attendees. These young adults shared their firsthand experiences managing diabetes in various real-world situations— including new jobs, travel, and college—providing valuable insight and practical advice.

This annual workshop was held at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes on Friday, June 6, 2025.

Thirty graduating seniors attended this program and 30 parents/caregivers attended the guardian portion of the program.

The Barbara Davis Center held the 23rd Annual Taking Diabetes To School Program, highlighting the essential role of families and communities as part of the student health care team. Community and school-based providers were encouraged to participate.

SCHOOL NURSE CONFERENCE

Through a combination of lectures and hands-on practicums, the conference strengthened participants’ knowledge and skills for supporting children with diabetes in school settings. The University of Colorado College of Nursing is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Colorado Nurses Association, an accredited approver through the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Sixty nurses and clinic aides attended the live Zoom session on Friday, September 19, 2025, joining from Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. An additional one hundred nurses and clinic aides registered for the self-paced recorded session.

CALL FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES SCREENING GAINS MOMENTUM BREAKTHROUGH DRUG FUELS INTEREST IN EARLY TESTING, SHOWN TO REDUCE TRAUMA AND COMPLICATIONS With the largest universal screening programs in the country, researchers at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes have known for years that testing all children for type 1 diabetes (T1D) could prevent the heartbreak and life-threatening complications that late-stage diagnosis can cause.

Yet, until recently, they have often felt alone in their educational efforts.

“Before, it was an area where you were trying to convince people, and we were kind of siloed,” said the BDC’s Kimberly (Kimber) Simmons, MD, recalling staffing many slow booths at local health fairs and presenting numerous solo papers on screening at global research conferences over the years. THE ANNUAL RUN FOR THE RING 5K & KIDS FUN RUN SHINES IN 2025 BIG FUN FOR LITTLE RUNNERS

The Kids Fun Run continued to be a highlight of the day, filled with laughter, excitement, and memory-making moments. Families enjoyed a variety of activities including Denver Nuggets Super Mascot Rocky cheering on young runners, Otter Pops to cool down, playful inflatables, and hands-on attractions designed to keep kids moving and smiling.

RECOGNIZING STANDOUT PARTICIPANTS

e are thrilled to celebrate another successful year of the Run for the Ring 5K Walk/Run & Kids Fun Run, bringing together families, runners, and supporters to raise funds and awareness for the type 1 diabetes community. This annual tradition continues to grow, and 2025 was no exception—uniting teams, energizing families, and strengthening the community spirit that defines this event.

Run for the Ring brought in nearly $29,000 to support the programs of The Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation.

A MEANINGFUL MORNING

This year’s Run for the Ring took place at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where participants gathered early for a lively and inspiring kickoff. The morning began with opening remarks and a runner warmup that set the tone for a day rooted in purpose and celebration led by Carlynn and Chesney Martin.

With participants walking, running, cheering, and fundraising, the event once again honored the symbolic “brass ring,” representing our shared goal of finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.

As always, the 5K brought out impressive runners and inspiring teams. New to the race this year, we awarded the type 1 overall winners to acknowledge the extra considerations that type 1 athletes must make when training and competing. The Empower Tied to a Cure Denver Golf Tournament, presented by RE/MAX, brought together golfers, advocates, philanthropists, and supporters for an unforgettable day at the breathtaking Sanctuary Golf Course. Hosted in honor of Ian McDonald, the tournament blended spirited competition with heartfelt purpose, all set against panoramic views of the Rocky Mountain foothills. Sanctuary once again provided a remarkable backdrop—its rolling greens, dramatic elevation changes, and serene natural beauty creating the perfect setting for a day dedicated to making a meaningful difference for families affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D).

he McDonald Automotive Tied to a Cure Golf Flyaway delivered another unforgettable year of excitement, camaraderie, and impact.

Golfers and supporters traveled to Las Vegas for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the worldrenowned Shadow Creek Golf Course, paired with a luxury stay at the Bellagio Hotel—all in support of advancing care and research for people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
