Welcome. Welcome. Welcome to the 33rd Annual Carousel Ball, an evening

celebrating the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. Tonight, we gather together to support the 30 million Americans who suffer with this disease, and over 350 million people worldwide. With all of us together, we will win this fight against diabetes and one day, very soon, we will find the cure.

When Marvin and I were given the news that our seven-year-old daughter, Dana, had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, we had no knowledge of this disease and all its terrible complications. Treatment was in another state and getting there was difficult. We thought about the thousands of families facing this daunting journey and Marvin asked if I would like to create the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes here in Denver to help all the children with type 1 diabetes. With the help of so many wonderful, generous and caring friends, we began a life-long commitment.

It is now 44 years later, and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes is thriving. We have the best doctors, the best researchers, the best treatment and care for the over 7,000 patients who come from all over the world. We treat everyone, regardless of their financial status. Care is available to all and we welcome each and every patient with open arms. I know how proud Marvin would be of all the advances that have been made and with the dedication of our nurses, social workers, and informed staff. They have eased the burden of care through life-changing technology. Now, having type 1 diabetes is not as intimidating and the cure is within reach. The Barbara Davis Center is working on stem cell research that will one day cure the hundreds of millions of people around the world who have diabetes and so many other autoimmune diseases. This is only possible because of the people in this room tonight.

We are so proud and excited to honor Lisa and Tom Corley this evening with the High Hopes Tribute Award. They have been loyal friends and supporters for many years and their passion as leaders of the community, along with being great philanthropists precedes them. The recipient of this year’s Founder’s Award is a dear friend and has been with us since the beginning of this journey. Dr. Richard Abrams brings to us his knowledge, his commitment, his expertise, and determination in finding a cure for diabetes. I am so proud to recognize him as our honoree.

Lighting up the stage this evening is country music legend Reba McEntire. She has graced stage, screen, and television with her incredible energy, her beautiful spirit, and amazing talent. We are thrilled she is sharing her gift of song with us tonight. Her warmth and graciousness are an inspiration to all who meet her. And, as a special treat, Mario Lopez joins us to host the evening. His vibrant personality is known around the country and we are honored that he has taken a night off from his hosting duties on Access Hollywood to be with us. I thank all our honorees and performers from the bottom of my heart for their generosity, their time, and their commitment in joining our fight and reaching for the Brass Ring – we will make the dream of a cure turn into reality.

I am pleased and honored to welcome you to The Carousel Ball, an evening where we come together to support and uplift the families and the community who are affected by type 1 diabetes. This evening, we honor two of Colorado’s most caring people, Lisa and Tom Corley, for more than 20 years of friendship, service, and support of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. I cannot think of a more giving and compassionate couple. A true spirit of philanthropy radiates from within and is felt by all those around them. Lisa and Tom both work to connect good people and deserving charities and in doing so, foster a culture of generosity in our community. I feel so blessed to call them my friends and to have them as part of our Children’s Diabetes Foundation family.

In 1977, my mother Barbara Davis and my late father Marvin Davis created the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes to bring world-class diabetes care to Colorado and the Children’s Diabetes Foundation to breathe life into that dream.

The Foundation has proudly supported the Center for more than forty years, and it has been so exciting to see my parents’ dream become a reality. I have the honor of working with the remarkable doctors, researchers, and staff at the Barbara Davis Center and am in constant awe of their talents and abilities. Their passion for their patients, their commitment to improving lives, their curiosity for understanding this disease, and their dedication to finding a cure for diabetes is a unique combination that makes them the go-to center for diabetes care and research.

Your support for The Carousel Ball tonight and your loyal generosity throughout the year is essential to finding a cure for diabetes. As our researchers learn more about this complicated disease, we get closer and closer to providing a new opportunity for the families that have been fighting for their lives. Whether they have been affected by diabetes for weeks, months, years, or decades, I know that we are giving them hope as we seek this cure.

This evening, the Founder’s Award will be given to Richard Abrams, M.D., who has played an instrumental role in advancing diabetes care for more than 40 years. His service to the medical field is unmatched, not to mention his tireless work on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Barbara Davis Center and Board of Directors at the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. Throughout his career, Dr. Abrams focused much of his work on the management of diabetes during pregnancy. As a former leader of the pregnancy council of the American Diabetes Association, Dr. Abrams wrote and edited several books on the management of diabetes during pregnancy. We are pleased to recognize his devotion and service to the cause this evening.

The evening wouldn’t be complete without our star performer. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation is so excited to have Reba McEntire, the Queen of Country Music, here to help raise awareness for type 1 diabetes and to make this a night to remember. Enjoy the show!

2019 Recipients of the High Hopes Tribute Award

Lisa Corley was born and raised in Colorado. In her early years, Lisa attended Thornton High School, started her undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado at Denver, then transferred to Regis University where she continued her combined undergraduate/graduate studies in organizational behavior.

Lisa has more than 25 years of experience in Legal Administration and Law Firm Management, previously working for Kutak Rock; Davis, Graham & Stubbs; and LeBeauf Lamb Green & McRae. She is a current board member for A Precious Child, former board member for Warren Village, and presidentelect for The Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, where she has been a member for 20+ years.

She has served in numerous leadership roles for The Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, including as Co-Chair of The Carousel Ball silent auction and Chair of the Brass Ring Luncheon. Lisa manages their private family foundation and has also been involved in many other organizations, including Craig Hospital Foundation, Denver Center for Performing Arts in Education Program, Junior League of Denver, Kemp Center, Valor Christian High School, and Adams County Head Start.

In her spare time, Lisa enjoys organizing family events and vacations, family reunions, and photo albums.

She also loves planning and hosting events for special causes, holidays, and gatherings for friends and family.

A Colorado native, Tom Corley, was a graduate of Ranum High School in Westminster. After high school,

he attended the Colorado School of Mines, worked his way through college, and focused his career path towards the oil and gas business. Tom graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1983. He is a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Today, he co-manages Meritage Energy (MECO IV), a small private oil and gas company headquartered in downtown Denver with his business partner, Sam Winegrad. The two have previously built and sold three prior companies. Tom has more than 35 years of experience in all facets of the industry and previously worked for companies such as General Atlantic Resources, St. Mary Land and Exploration, and Basin Exploration.

Tom is a member of the Board of Trustees for A Precious Child and president of their family foundation – The Corley Legacy Foundation. Tom’s hobbies include fly fishing, weight training, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and playing the guitar.

Lisa and Tom have been married for 34 years and have two children, Alex and Spencer.

Richard Abrams, M.D. 2019 Recipient of the Founders Award

Dr. Abrams has practiced internal medicine for more than 40 years at Rose Medical Center, where he founded Colorado Preventive Medicine in 2006. His professional focus is based on the assumption that prevention or early detection of treatable disease is the key to a long, healthy life.

One of Rick’s proudest accomplishments was his role in demonstrating that women with type 1 diabetes could become pregnant and safely deliver healthy babies. Forty years ago, most physicians firmly believed that having a family was simply out of the question for women with diabetes. Dr. Abrams and colleagues showed that with contemporary diabetes care, pregnancy was safe for both mother and child.

Rick edited the first editions of the American Diabetes Association books Diabetes During Pregnancy and Gestational Diabetes. He has also written and edited five medical books and numerous articles. His book, Will It Hurt the Baby, was featured on NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, and CBS’s This Morning.

A highlight of Rick’s professional life is serving on the Children’s Diabetes Foundation Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Board for more than 30 years. The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes is one of the nation’s premier clinical care facilities and research centers. His participation in the success of both organizations continues to be an honor.

Rick’s life is enriched by the love and support of his wife Carol, his son Brian, his daughter Katie, daughter-inlaw Nora, son-in-law Tzur, and his three grandsons Xander, Knox, and Liam.

Mario Lopez Emcee

Mario Lopez has the overwhelming desire to always keep active. The two-time Emmy-winning television host has just joined “Access Hollywood” and has signed an over-all development deal with NBC/Universal. He also hosts the nationwide iHeartMedia radio shows, “On with Mario Lopez” and “iHeartRadio Countdown with Mario Lopez.” Lopez has also launched a YouTube channel called “The Lopez Family” created alongside Awestruck, the channel features his wife Courtney, their two children and their two dogs. He not only has a proclivity for the entertainment industry, Lopez is also an avid sports fan. He has taken his love of sports, specifically boxing, to the next level as a host of the iHeartRadio podcast “The 3 Knockdown Rule,” which is also featured on the FOX Sports Radio website. Lopez also co-created the upcoming Netflix series “The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia.” The Latinx family comedy centers on a 15-year-old robotics engineer and rocket scientist and her family.

In September 2014, Mario released his first autobiography, “Just Between Us.” In his memoir, he shares his successes and disappointments, never before-told stories and family values. Mario became a New York Times best-selling author with his healthy eating guide, “Extra Lean.” In May 2011, he released the follow-up to “Extra Lean,” entitled “Extra Lean Family.” This new book featured recipes and tips beneficial to the entire family. Additionally, Mario penned “Mario Lopez’s Knockout Fitness,” a best-selling fitness book that offers readers a look into his impressive workout regime. Additionally, he co-authored “Mud Tacos,” a vibrant children’s book with his sister Marissa; and “Mario & Baby Gia,” a children’s book he wrote for his daughter Gia. “Mario & Baby Gia” is currently being developed into an animated series.

No stranger to rigorous routines, Lopez danced his way to the finals in the third season of ABC’s hit show “Dancing with the Stars.” Shortly after, in the summer of 2009, he successfully completed his first run on Broadway, starring in the long-running hit musical “A Chorus Line” as the beloved character Zach.

Mario was named the Alumni Ambassador of Fitness by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), joining the ranks of some 25 other prominent alumni, including Denzel Washington and former President Bill Clinton in the organization’s BE GREAT campaign. Via the campaign, he helps bring to light the major issues affecting today’s young people, including the importance of graduating from high school and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the key role community-based organizations like BGCA play in the positive development of children.

Even with all his other ventures, Lopez is still in love with acting. He has recently appeared on the NBC hit drama “This is Us” and the CW series “Jane the Virgin.” Lopez has also appeared on “Brooklyn 99,” “The Roockie,” and a recurring voice on “Elena of Avalor” with his daughter Gia. He played ‘Dr. Mike Hamoui’ on eight episodes of F/X network’s popular show “Nip/Tuck,” Lopez’s run on the series bringing an instant and well-deserved cult following. Lopez previously starred in the highest-rated program in ABC Family history, “Holiday in Handcuffs” and also starred opposite Mark Consuelos in the made-for-TV movie, “Husband for Hire,” the most-watched program ever on the Oxygen Network.

Mario currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife Courtney, their daughter Gia, their son Dominic and they just welcomed their new baby son, Santino Rafael Lopez.

Multi-media entertainment mogul Reba McEntire has become a household name through a successful career

that spans across music, television, film, theater and retail. Gracie Lambrecht

Gracie Lambrecht is a vibrant and active 12 year old who is passionate about life, her faith, family and

friends. She takes pride in being a center midfielder on her competitive soccer team and takes even more pride in being a member of National Junior Honor Society at her middle school. On most days, one can find Gracie kicking the soccer ball around with her little sister, Mia or conjuring up a new recipe in the kitchen. Gracie has a zest for life that is contagious to all who know her.

On September 19th, 2011, at the age of 4, Gracie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Her carefree world as she knew it was over. The new reality she was forced to endure involved injections with each meal and countless needle pricks to her little fingers each day to survive. Although it was devastating to her parents, Gracie would often tell her mother, “It’s ok mommy, insulin makes me feel better.” That positive attitude has carried Gracie through days where diabetes has tried to get the best of her. Though the past 8 years have had their share of health challenges, Gracie endures.

Gracie is committed to helping to create a world without type 1 diabetes. She is an advocate for the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and has participated in many events helping to educate people about type one diabetes and help raise money to fund research that will one day lead to a cure. Gracie has also participated in a research study which helped the Medtronic 670G insulin pump gain FDA approval for children under 14 years of age. In addition to this, Gracie has also written a blog entry featured on the CDF website encouraging persons with type one to get outdoors and have fun!

Type one diabetes affects the entire family. On the day Gracie came home from the hospital after her diagnosis, her little sister, Mia, just two years old held out her finger and insisted that she have her finger poked too. And so it has been, for the past 8 years, Mia has stood beside her sister through the highs and lows of this dreaded disease. When Gracie and Mia say their prayers together each night, the prayer always ends the same way, “God, please help the researchers to find a cure soon, Amen!”

Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes

The Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes (BDC) is one of the largest centers in the world

specializing in type 1 diabetes research and care for children and adults. Clinicians, clinical researchers, and basic biomedical scientists work at the BDC to find the most effective treatment, prevention, and cure for type 1 diabetes.

The center’s clinics provide state-of-the-art care for more than 7,000 children and adults with diabetes. Barbara Davis Center clinics offer extensive education and support for patients and their families, as well as specialized programs such as the Pregnancy and Diabetes Clinic, the Hispanic/Latino Diabetes Care Program, and a model Telemedicine program servicing residents in Wyoming and remote parts of Colorado.

BDC research goals include investigation of the causes of type 1 diabetes, the early detection of autoimmunity, prevention, and early intervention. BDC clinical faculty members are developing new strategies and treatments for improved outcomes of care, including prevention of complications of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Investigators of the BDC receive more than $12 million in direct cost funding per year from the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and other federal, foundation, and industry sponsors. Research areas include: • Artificial Pancreas/Hybrid Closed Loop Systems: The evaluation of devices for continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump therapy, and their combination with computer algorithms designed to adjust insulin delivery • Finding the Cause of Diabetes: The investigation of environmental and immunogenetic causes of type 1 diabetes and development of tests to predict the disease • Finding a Cure: The development of novel ideas and discoveries in the immunology, genetics, and cell biology of diabetes The BDC Research Division provides cytometry and islet preparation services for local clientele. The Molecular Biology Service center provides basic molecular biology support, DNA sequencing, cell line authentication and mycoplasma testing. The Autoantibody/HLA Service Center performs studies which include assays for

islet autoantibodies and markers of other autoimmune disorders, including celiac and Addison’s disease. This laboratory serves as the core laboratory for numerous national and international trials for the prevention of type 1 diabetes.

The BDC serves as a model for combining basic and clinical investigation and is an outstanding training environment for developing physician-scientists, clinicians, and basic science researchers. Faculty members provide laboratory and clinical research training opportunities for young investigators from around the world, including participants in the highly successful T32 Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Training Program and K12 Pediatric Endocrinologist Career Development Program. The annual Keystone Conference remains the Center’s flagship in the area of continuing medical education (CME) in Management of Diabetes, regularly selling out with more than 600 participants.

Children’s Diabetes Foundation Fundraising to Make an Impact

The Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) was started in 1977 as the fundraising arm for the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) in Aurora, Colorado. The Barbara Davis Center provides care for over 7,000 patients and conducts extensive research on a cure for diabetes through stem cell therapy and other means, as well as diabetes technology, complications, prevention, and management. The funding from the Children’s Diabetes Foundation supports all these initiatives as well as its own programs.

The doctors at the Barbara Davis Center have a unique opportunity to be up-close with this disease and see every side of it. This often sparks new research ideas that may not be viable for grants if prior evidence for success is not available through other studies. Usually this results in research being held back due to lack of grants. However, at the BDC, doctors have funds through the Children’s Diabetes Foundation that allow them to make these projects come to life or come up with the background results needed to jump into the next phase that will allow them to get grants. This keeps the research field moving forward efficiently.

Diabetes care and supplies can cost up to $20,000 a year, which can be devastating to a family. These costs are not optional as a person with type 1 diabetes cannot survive without insulin. The Helping Hand Program helps families in financial need get the diabetes supplies, appointments, education, and technology they need to successfully manage their type 1 diabetes. Further, the program helps with ambulance transportation, hospital bills, and even monthly rent to make sure these families can afford life, not only for the type 1 person, but for the whole family.

The Children’s Diabetes Foundation is honored to have over 300 incredible volunteers in The Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation who are constantly giving their time and talent to make the Foundation thrive.

They hold exciting events such as the Spring Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show, Run for the Ring 5K & Kids Fun Run, Boo Bash (a Halloween party for type 1 kids), and much more. They also hold booths at events to spread awareness and education. The volunteer group is truly the heart behind the Foundation and we are lucky to have them by our side!

The Children’s Diabetes Foundation strives to support families emotionally as well. In 2016, CDF started holding monthly support groups where families can get together to discuss life with type 1 diabetes. It can be emotionally draining and giving people an opportunity to talk through the details with those who understand what they are going through can make all the difference. Today, there are nine support groups across Colorado and Wyoming where families can speak and be heard about the challenges of living with type 1 diabetes.

2019 marked the third annual EPIC Diabetes Conference, a one-day patient conference for people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their friends, family, and caregivers. Almost 300 people came to attend sessions with Colorado’s top diabetes specialists, patient panels, visits with vendors, and more. Attendees gave overwhelmingly great reviews and were thankful to feel that they were not alone with this disease.

The Children’s Diabetes Foundation continues to co-host the ATDC Keystone Conference with the Barbara Davis Center in Keystone, Colorado. This event brings in 500-600 healthcare professionals from all over the world together for 4 days to learn the most up-to-date information on diabetes care, technology, and research to improve care.

Currently, the world at large is very naïve about diabetes and what it is really like to live with it. CDF will continue to spread awareness and educate people as much as possible, so no type 1 has to hear “you have diabetes because you ate too much sugar” or “you can’t eat that” ever again. These stereotypes pervade the public consciousness but are simply not true. Sharing what real life is like with type 1 with the masses is another way we hope to help those living with the disease.

The Barbara Davis Center is a unique facility because everything the patient could need for their diabetes care is under one roof. The BDC employs doctors, physicians, nutritionists, social workers, psychologists, prescription managers, scientific researchers, and more to make sure that every part of a patient’s diabetes care is covered. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation is proud to raise funds for this incredible facility that is making a huge impact in the world of diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that afflicts 30 million people in the United States, about 1.25 million of

whom have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes or childhood diabetes, but recent studies have shown that 50% of people who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are over the age of 20. Every year, approximately 40,000 people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and this number continues to rise.

You have probably heard of insulin and glucose, but how do they work? After a person eats a meal, food is broken down into glucose (sugar) and nutrients, which are absorbed into the blood stream. This causes sugar levels in the blood to rise, which triggers the pancreas to make the hormone insulin and send it into the bloodstream. In people with diabetes, the body either can’t make or can’t respond to insulin properly. This means the sugar stays in the blood stream instead of getting into cells, where the sugar is used for energy.

Because of this, people with type 1 diabetes take artificial insulin throughout the day to counteract high blood sugars. They take the medicine through multiple doses of insulin every day, either through injections or an insulin pump worn on the body. While these measures are certainly helpful for maintaining a steady blood sugar, they are not a perfect science. There are many variables that go into diabetes management, such as diet, exercise, hormones, stress levels, and countless others.

Another concern for diabetics is low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include blurred vision, shaking, sweating, slurred speech, irritability, drowsiness, and acting incoherent or spacey. If the blood sugar is severely low, the person may become unconscious or have a seizure. These low blood sugars put a diabetic in immediate danger.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for diabetes. Each child who is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes will have the disease for the rest of their life, unless we can find a cure. The risk of developing diabetes is higher than virtually all other childhood, chronic illnesses. It is estimated that one out of every three babies born today will have diabetes in their lifetime. For this reason, the Barbara Davis Center continues to improve diabetes care and search for a cure for type 1 diabetes.

2019 Carousel Ball Advocates Isabel “Izzy” Cofrades Meet Izzy. She is 11 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 6 years old. She loves to figure skate, play with her dogs, make slime, and SHOP! She also loves to play with her best friend, Bella, go snowboarding, eat, travel, and go surfing. She would love to become a veterinarian when she grows up, and her hope for the future is for no more diabetes for anyone!

Christian Dana Meet Christian. He is 10 years old and has lived with type 1 diabetes since the age of 6. He loves living in Colorado while playing football, gaming, wrestling, and camping. He has worked hard to become the IB student of the month at his elementary school and wants to either become a police officer when he grows up or join the Army.

His hope is for there to be a cure for type 1 diabetes.

McKenna Deatherage Meet McKenna. She is 11 years old and was 7 years old when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She loves soccer and swimming. She would like to become a doctor when she grows up, but until then, her hope for the future is to see a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Natalie Griffin Meet Natalie. She is 16 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 3 years old. She loves to make hats, draw, and play video games. In fact, she is already working towards her goal to design video games. On her 10th year anniversary of having diabetes, she received a Lilly Diabetes Journey Award. Her hope for the future is a cure for diabetes or a way to prevent it earlier than what exists today.

Ellie Hampton Meet Ellie. She is 7 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 6 years old.

Ellie lives in Illinois and enjoys spending time at her family’s farm. She likes to tumble, ride her horse Oreo, draw, swim and hang out with friends. When she grows up she wants to be a veterinarian so she can take care of animals. Ellie’s hope for the future is to have a healthy life without the worries and daily struggles of diabetes.

Francesca “Frankie” Hodgson Meet Frankie. She is 5 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2. She loves to swim, draw, and play with friends. When Frankie grows up, she wishes to be a scientist. Her number one hope for the future is for everyone to have a unicorn.

Hailey Hussman Meet Hailey. She is 14 years old and was 10 when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Although her life will be more difficult than many others, she never complains about her type 1 and she’s determined to never let diabetes stand the way of her schoolwork and the sports she loves! Hailey has a great sense of humor and likes to keep things light. She is a naturally talented athlete and has an adventurous spirit which shows in her running, mountain biking, rock climbing, and big mountain skiing.

Her hope for the future is to make type 1 diabetes TYPE NONE! Keaton Isakson Meet Keaton. He is 9 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 2 years old. He loves to play all sports, but especially basketball and tennis. When he grows up, he wants to be in the Army, but unfortunately, they don’t let people with type 1 diabetes join. So, if there isn’t a cure by the time he grows up, then he has vowed he will work hard to find one! His hope and prayer for the future is a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Gracie Lambrecht – Prayer Child and Advocate Meet Gracie. She is 12 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 4 years old. She loves to play competitive soccer, go fishing, camp with her family, art, and go horseback riding. For all three trimesters in middle school, she has been on the principal’s honor roll. Gracie would love to become a chef, an FBI agent, and a professional soccer player when she grows up. In fact, her hope for the future is to be a member of the US Women’s National Soccer Team.

Cecilia Polumbus Meet Cecilia. She is 18 years old a freshman in college. She was diagnosed when she was 12. She lives in Colorado and in her free time, she enjoys playing sports. She also plays the flute, the guitar, and she draws. She is currently working to become a Zoo Veterinarian. Her hope for the future is that people will become more educated about type 1 diabetes and not hold her back because of it.

Margot Rae Meet Margot. She is 10 years old and has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes since the age of 2. She loves to draw, ski, play soccer, ride her bike and jump on her pogo stick. She has earned a Leadership Award at her school and hopes to be a veterinarian when she grows up. Her hope for the future is for a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Eva Rust Meet Eva. She is 9 years and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 4.

She loves to go horseback riding and would love to become a veterinarian when she grows up. Eva has received the Personal Integrity Award and Perseverance Award at school, and was the State Finalist in Breaking Barriers Art contest where her artwork showcased Sonia Sotomayor. Her hope for the future is to stop animal cruelty and find a cure for type 1 diabetes, of course!

Noelle Schulz Meet Noelle. She is 6 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 4. She likes to play with dolls and also likes to look for bugs. When Noelle grows up, she wants to become a singer! Her hope for the future is for everyone to get along.

Miles Scott Meet Miles. He is 11 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 5 years old. He loves tennis, soccer, skiing, gaming, art, and music. He has received soccer trophies and math awards and would love to become a professional athlete when he grows up or work with his dad at home. His hope for the future is to become very successful and continue to be healthy.

Abbey Smolen Meet Abbey. She is 15 years old and when she was 12 years old, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She loves to ski, babysit, listen to music and watch Netflix. Abbey is always looking forward to hanging out with friends. She has received a Leadership Award in her school. She wants to work in the medical field or become a psychiatrist.

Her hope for the future is for kids to stop getting diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and for there to be a cure.

Ryder Terry Meet Ryder. He is 6 years old and has lived with type 1 diabetes since he was 3 years old.

He loves to ski, swim, build with LEGOS, play superhero, baseball, soccer, and spend time with his family. He earned an award in baseball and soccer as the MVP, as well as the Drama Super Star for being creative at school. When he grows up, he wants to be either an engineer, scientist, monster truck driver, or ninja. Ryder’s hope for the future is to learn to dose himself and help other kids until there isn’t diabetes anymore.

Gavin Volden Meet Gavin. He is 8 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 4.

He loves to ride his dirt bike, go horseback riding, hike, swim, play baseball, and play Nintendo’s Mario Kart. He wants to be a fire fighter when he grows up and his number one hope for the future is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Corrine Watne Meet Corinne. She is 13 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 9.

Corinne has been the recipient of the Children for Children award by the International Music Syndicate for her creative donation to Children’s Hospital and has also been an honorary princess for Miss Colorado. She has been honored to speak at special events statewide on behalf of type 1 children everywhere. She hopes to grow up to be a teacher for the deaf, but her number one hope for the future is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Dearest Dana, When you were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes it was the disease that I knew nothing about - you were seven years old, a precious little girl that I couldn’t possibly imagine having any type of illness. Since then, we have learned so much and together we are making miraculous strides.

As the Executive Director of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, you have been so diligently working to fundraise, educate, and bring awareness to the world and information, love, kindness and the best care to the children and the families who are affected by this disease. From the Golf Tournaments to the 5K run, to the fashion show luncheon and to the get-togethers and support groups of the patients and families who share this disease, to The Carousel Ball. Everything you do accomplishes so much and brings us closer to the brass ring – a cure.

My heart is with you every step of the way and so are my goals. I reach for the brass ring, not only for you, my dear daughter, but for all the children, adults, doctors, families, friends whose goal is to overcome this terrible disease. Your accomplishments are so many and more meaningful and fabulous than I can list and put on a piece of paper. I am so proud of you.

I thank the entire staff of the Barbara Davis Center for all they do to fight this disease each and every day. But I also thank you, Dana, for the brave, heroic, beautiful job you have done. There is no harder worker, there is no better achiever, than you.

I congratulate you on tonight’s success and on so much more.
