Free Technical Advice

now included with KYB Suspension Solutions App KYB has launched an update for the popular Suspension Solutions mobile App. The App will now provide detailed, part specific technical advice for a suspension job, COMPLETELY FREE. The technician can either enter the car make and model, the VIN number, or the registration number (currently only available in certain countries) and they will be shown the KYB part numbers required, and a detailed technical bulletin for each job. The bulletin includes an illustrated set by step guide to fit the part, as well as the tools required (and relevant torque settings), and an estimate for the time needed to complete the job. If there is a KYB fitting video available for this reference, this will also be provided. “We felt this feature was the next step for the KYB App”, explains Jordan Day, Marketing Manager for KYB Europe Aftermarket, “the App now helps with all the main stages of replacing suspension, this latest feature helps with finding the part number and fitting the product, the current features help the technician with proposing a suspension job to a motorist, and also following up the job. "Additives are chemical tools”

The head of research at LIQUI MOLY on the technical and financial opportunities of additives “Additives are chemical tools that can solve lots of problems faster, more easily and more cheaply than mechanical solutions can,” says David Kaiser, Head of Research and Development at oil and additive specialist LIQUI MOLY. “They should be in every professional’s toolbox.” An example: A car’s engine will no longer run. Investigation determines that the air inlet is the cause of the problem. Exhaust gas recirculation has caused it to become so coated in deposits that the air flow to the engine is impaired. Normally this would require the air intake system to be dismantled and cleaned by hand. LIQUI MOLY has a much easier way. Spray some throttle valve cleaner for gasoline engines or intake system cleaner for diesel ones into the intake tract and the engine will run once again. The cleaning agents will remove even the most stubborn of residues. In no time at all the intake tract is clean and the engine is running. Another example: An old diesel car is producing emissions that are too high. The

cause is often encrustation of the injectors meaning that the fuel in the combustion chamber is no longer being finely atomized. This, in turn, means that dirty fuel is burnt, resulting in even more deposits. LIQUI MOLY’s Diesel Smoke Stop gets rid of the encrustation and so improves fuel consumption. This also results in significantly improved emission levels. One final example: Changing the oil in a car with high mileage. Over time, lots of deposits will have built up in the oil circuit. Garages often ignore this fact or try to solve it by increasingly reducing the time between oil changes. Engine oils contain cleaning agents, just not in very high doses. This type of cleaning, unfortunately, wears off after a few hundred kilometers. LIQUI MOLY’s engine flush does the job much more quickly and efficiently. This is a highly effective cleaning additive for the oil circuit. Add it to the oil just before it is changed and then allow the engine to idle for around ten minutes. During this time the agent will dissolve the dirt and suspend it in the oil. The dirt is then

drained out with the old oil. The new oil enters a clean motor and can deploy its full performance. These three examples illustrate how additives can provide technical solutions for the everyday problems that garages deal with. As they take very little time, they are easy to integrate into daily operations. They also cost very little, offering garages attractive margins, both when using the additives themselves and when selling them to customers.

HELLA DEVELOPS ARTIFICIAL DRIVING NOISE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES - AVAS Lighting and electronics expert HELLA gives vehicles with noiseless engines a sound similar to a conventional internal combustion engine. This enables road users to better hear approaching vehicles and therefore warns them of their presence. The new Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) will be presented by HELLA for the first time from the 18 October to 23 October at the leading trade fair Busworld in Brussels (Hall 1, stand 145). Since 1 July 2019, in order to protect road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and the visually impaired, new types of electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles in the European Union have had to be fitted with an acoustic signal as standard. This sound makes otherwise silent vehicles very au-

dible. Similar regulations apply in the USA and China. HELLA has now developed this type of acoustic warning system for use in passenger cars, commercial vehicles and buses.

Winter Coolant Servicing Contemporary coolants have become every bit as ‘vehicle specific’ as engine oil. There are now three very distinct technologies used as ‘original fill’ by vehicle manufacturers. These coolants all perform the same essential functions – i.e. prevent freezing and overheating, while simultaneously protecting engine and cooling system components against corrosion and erosion. But their chemical additive formulations – also called ‘packages’ – are entirely different, one from another, and can’t be mixed or substituted. It means that for technicians to protect warranties, vehicles presented for servicing must be re-filled or topped up with the exact type of OE coolant that went in on-line. And that makes winter servicing with manufacturer-approved coolants a significant profit opportunity; an opportunity that switched-on independent workshops should be quick to grasp.

The most recent research conducted for Comma’s Professional Partner Programme revealed that franchised dealers typically charge £120 / €136.86 – and more – for a coolant drain and refill. Yet with the latest coolant re-filling equipment, the job can be done professionally, using the correct, manufactuer-approved coolants, in under half an hour at a charge-out rate around half that figure. In fact, three vehicles an hour could easily be serviced, making this a viable ‘while you wait’ proposition with high returns. The equipment is readily available, easy to use, requires no special training, and eliminates the need for thermo recycling – i.e. running the engine hot and cold to bleed off air.

Technicians’ Tips For best coolant practice, follow these guidelines…… and don’t forget to inform your customer about what you have done, and why.

• When the additive package is ‘spent’, replace all coolant to restore full protection. • Check the vehicle handbook and always fill with the correct, manufacturer-approved or OE compliant coolant. • Never mix coolant types – it cancels out their individual protective properties and could actually lead to mechanical damage. • Use only de-ionised/distilled water – never tap water – to dilute concentrated coolants. • Flush old or dirty systems with cleaner before re-filling. • Visually check the entire coolant system for leaks after re-filling.

Replacing a Diesel Common Rail Injector When replacing a DENSO Diesel Common Rail Injector, marked with a compensation code, it is necessary to register the ID code printed on the upper part of the injector with a diagnostic tool into the electronic control unit (ECU). The injector compensation code is used to compensate injector production tolerances.

Ensure there is no pressure in the system before opening the high pressure pipes Ensure the area around unions is clear from any dirt or liquids Use blanking caps on open ports to prevent dirt / dust entering the components Use the nozzle protection cap after injector is removed Insure care is taken not to damage the injector solenoid when removing injectors from the engine

If fitting injectors to the engine ensure that the injector QR code on top of the injector is noted, along with the cylinder number Ensure that the injector pocket is clear of obstructions, including the seal from the removed injector If re-using the original injector always replace the old gasket with a new one. New injectors come with seal ring Ensure no excessive force is used on the solenoid when fitting injector to the engine. Only apply force (no impact) to the clamp Ensure the injectors are clamped down following the correct procedure and torque to avoid distortion. During this operation, remove blanking caps before re-fitting the high pressure / back leakage pipes If fitting new injectors ensure that the injector QR code is re-entered in the ECU via the diagnostic tool. Ensure that each individual injector QR code corresponds with the cylinder mounting position! Perform the high pressure test using the diagnostic tool to confirm there is no leakage! Perform injection learning

Important: If the engine is running and/or a high pressure test is performed, never touch any high pressure pipe/connection/component with your fingers! If there is a leakage, hot, highly pressurised fuel could cause serious injuries. Make sure that the engine is switched off Make sure that the fuel pressure has dropped to zero and that the fuel temperature is at ambient temperature Wait at least one minute after the engine has stopped before commencing any repair to the fuel injection system
