Happy New Year, and a warm welcome to issue 9 of CDi. I am sure you will agree that 2022 seemed to come and go in the blink of an eye. 2023 is a special year for us at CD Group as it marks 60 years since my grandfather started the business in 1963. The support of our customers has driven CD Group across three generations of our family business, so we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for working with us, whether that started within the previous year or decades ago.

Optimising our brand portfolio to best support customers is a key priority for CD. 2022 saw us focus on our braking portfolio, with the launch of the Brake Engineering friction range. I firmly believe that we have the most comprehensive braking solution on the island, covering all tiers available, whilst focussing on working with braking manufacturers and specialists.

Other brands welcomed in 2022 included the globally recognised WD-40 and its signature brands GT85 and 3-IN-ONE. Also introduced were Nissens cooling and climate components, febi timing chains, Shaftec calipers, FAI engine components and timing chain kits, Quick Brake fitting kits, wear indicators and accessories and Exide batteries. 2023 will bring further brands to our portfolio, enhancing our offering to the market.

We backed up our focus on customer service in 2022 to improve range and availability, with €2m (£1.75m) of additional investment in stock across the year.

Our team have also been working hard to improve our systems and customer interfaces, including having the ability to fully integrate into a customer's system via Autonet or TecCom, relaunching our DVSE catalogue which enhances your ability to search for products through a TecDoc catalogue format, and allowing you to check stock, price and order. We have also made significant progress in

the launch of a new Warehouse Management System (WMS) which will enable us to best service customers in 2023.

MechanExpert were back on the road last year, enhanced by a fantastic ATJ Expo at the RDS in October. A fantastic turnout over the 2 days allowed our team to showcase both Brake Engineering and Bosch Equipment to those in attendance. You will be pleased to know that MechanExpert will be back on the road in 2023 with venues currently being finalised. The attraction for suppliers is evident also, with additional partner brands planned for this year too. If you are interested in working alongside the MechanExpert team, and brands, to bring a premium product message and knowledge to your customers, please reach out to your account manager.

As ever, our market continues to evolve, whether it be with the growth of electric vehicles or the ongoing consolidation of the market. It feels this will continue for the foreseeable future. Winter Maintenance: Key For a Long Battery Life

Cold weather puts enormous pressure on vehicle batteries, significantly reducing their power. But regular status checks and system recharges will help to guarantee drivers a sure start all winter long. Global stored energy leader Exide Technologies explains how to get batteries ready to face the winter.

There’s no doubt that temperature extremes are impacting batteries. High temperatures cause them to self-discharge, often damaging them permanently; whilst low temperatures literally drain the life out of them.

The reason that outside temperature has such a major impact on charge is that during cold weather, the engine needs more energy to crank. “Car batteries work best at a temperature of 27°C, but below that their chemical reaction

During cold weather the battery faces its greatest demands, with more power needed for traditional ‘starting, lighting, ignition’ functions as well as for the growing range of powerhungry leisure and safety features.

Additional in-car functions today are many; from navigation, multi-media entertainment, reversing cameras and lane assist systems to air conditioning, heated seats, automatic tailgates and mirrors as well as power steering. Even when parked and locked, many modern cars with keyless entry systems could still be taking power from the battery.

Batteries are the top cause of car breakdowns, according to statistics from across Europe. That represents a great deal of inconvenience and cost for drivers. By selecting the right battery first time, the risk that a battery will go flat during the winter can be significantly reduced. However, if battery failure does occur and a new replacement is needed, it is vital to choose an appropriate model that conforms to the requirements of the car manufacturer and suits the relevant driving style.

WINTER BATTERY TIPS

Avoid deep discharging

If customers have a start-stop system and regularly drive short journeys, their battery may lose its charge over time.

Recharging the battery occasionally, for at least 12 hours each time, will address this problem and extend the battery’s life.

Protect your battery

Keep it clean! Over time dust creates a conductive layer between the terminals that can significantly increase the battery’s natural rate of selfdischarge. The positive and negative terminals should be lightly coated with copper grease to protect against lead-acid oxidation.

Check connections

Vibrations can cause battery connections to loosen over time. Check occasionally that they are tight to avoid them becoming disconnected while driving or sparking while cranking the engine.

Protect batteries when not in use

Batteries will slowly self-discharge when they are out of use.

Motorists should ensure their battery is fully charged at the outset and occasionally recharged if the car is parked up for extended periods. This will prevent the battery losing energy storage capacity and extend its life. Also keep it in a cool dry place (between 0-25°C if possible).

Good maintenance will extend the battery’s life, but the time will come when it needs to be replaced –ideally before the driver is stranded at the roadside! Professional workshop advice will enable drivers to make the optimum selection.

What is a Viscous Dampers Design

A viscous damper has a sealed outer housing with a precision machined hub. Inside of the housing is an inertia ring with a viscous fluid (specialized silicone oil) filling the cavity.

With a viscous damper, the hub and outer ring are moving with the crankshaft since they are directly connected to it. Whereas, the inner fluid and inertia ring are moving only because of the shear force. As the crank rotates, the shear force is great enough to keep the fluid and inertia ring still relative to the outer ring (meaning everything is rotating at the same speed). As a combustion event happens, the harmonics oscillate the outer ring. The frequencies of these oscillations are high enough to create a rapid change in velocity which causes the free rotating internal inertia ring to be at a different speed than the outer ring. The fluid in-between the inertia ring and outer ring experiences a shear force that opposes the harmonics and helps to dissipate the harmonic energy as heat.

The silicon oil has a very high viscosity. As the change in velocity increases, it is being multiplied by this high viscosity resulting in a very high shear force. Another reason we use silicone is because of its thermal stability over a wide temperature range. The temperature range is -40 to 300 Fahrenheit meaning it can be used in very extreme temperature conditions and it remains an excellent dissipater of heat.” Heat is a by-product of damping harmonics and dissipating that heat away from the damping medium is critical to ensure performance and endurance.

With a fluid damper, the shear forces are acting anytime the crank is rotating. Once the harmonics get above a level to create a difference in rotational speed between the inertia ring and the outer ring, the damper is damping (which is most of the time).

How Does A Viscous Damper Work?

Torsional vibration is the speed fluctuation of a rotating shaft. It has two components, twist and rigid body motion.

• Twist is the kind of vibration that is expected when you think of crankshaft torsional vibration. From one end of the shaft to another the vibration amplitudes change direction. When this happens there is a point where there is no vibration amplitude. This is called a nodal point. The material stresses are the highest at a nodal point.

• Rigid body motion is when the rotating shaft has torsional vibration but there is no nodal point along the shaft. The vibration does not change direction.

The outer housing is directly connected to the shaft and moves with shaft rotation. Inside, the inner inertia ring freely rotates in a thin layer of viscous fluid (Silicon oil). As a vibration event happens it causes the outer housing and inner inertia ring to rotate independently at different speeds. The resulting shear action through the viscous fluid diminishes the vibration by transforming it to heat.

Why Silicone

Silicone has proven to be an excellent damping medium because it contributes to long damper life by exhibiting:

• High energy dissipation

• High tensile strength

• Effective across a broad range of frequencies and rpms

OEM engines?

Production of any mass produced item usually comes down to trade off’s. One of the biggest tradeoffs is cost vs. quality.If you can design a part to work with something that is cheaper, then you design it for something that is cheaper. When durability matters more, then you spend more. Such cases are often found in industrial applications. Many OEM’s for heavy duty diesel engines use viscous dampers because these machines power our economy and are subjected to very harsh conditions and are relied upon for business. Breaking or down time must be minimized.

As with the more commonly used WD-40® Multi Use Product, when tackling hardened-fast items it is best to liberally soak the troubled area, leave for a few minutes for the solution to do its magic and then gently work at the part, a process that can take a couple attempts.
