INDUSTRY NEWS Schaeffler Unveils REPXPERT App

Announces New OE Partnership with ŠKODA

Schaeffler is delighted to unveil the REPXPERT app, which is set to transform the way technicians utilise the online portal. REPXPERTs are now able to source product details for repair solutions and invaluable installation instructions, as well as gain access to TecDoc and product details from across the independent automotive aftermarket – all from the palm of their hands. On the user-friendly homescreen, which is recognisably REPXPERT branded and in line with the website and e-newsletter, users are faced with a variety of icons, one of which is ‘Vehicle Search’. This feature allows users to quickly find the parts they need for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Once the user finds the correct vehicle, the app allows the user toeither browse by Schaeffler brands – LuK, INA, FAG or Ruville – or by product group. Another crucial feature is ‘Part Search’, which allows REPXPERTs to find parts by typing in a Schaeffler, OE or competitor part number or even an EAN code. Alternatively, the user can just simply click ‘Barcode Scan’ and use the camera on their device to scan the barcode on any Schaeffler packaging. ‘CheckPoint’ is another icon in the REPXPERT app, which is currently home to a complete version of the previous LuK DMF CheckPoint app, a must-have for anybody servicing or repairing clutches with a dual mass flywheel. Other CheckPoint functions to be added include INA timing systems, which will feature tensioner and pulley stud torque values and lots more belt service-related information. Schaeffler is hopeful that the release of the new platform will inspire a new generation of technicians to sign-up. Registered users can log-in using their existing details, while new members can sign-up, via the REPXPERT app, free-of-charge. The REPXPERT app can be downloaded for free, for all Apple iOS and Android devices. Schaeffler Head of Category and Technical, Thom Willis, said: “The new app is unique in the aftermarket, using a direct link to the REPXPERT technical platform to provide both catalogue and repair information straight to the user’s device. “Extra functionality will continue to be developed, such as ‘INA CheckPoint’, making the REPXPERT app an invaluable tool for the modern workshop.”

KYB will manufacture front and rear shock absorbers from their Czech factory for the SCALA, an all-new 5 door family hatchback released across Europe this year. Bosch extends the service life of electric-vehicle batteries Cloud-based swarm intelligence helps batteries maintain performance for longer. To help batteries last longer, Bosch is developing new cloud services that supplement the individual vehicles’ battery-management systems. “Bosch is connecting electric-vehicle batteries with the cloud. Its data-based services mean we can substantially improve batteries’ performance and extend their service life,” says Dr. Markus Heyn, member of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH. Smart software functions in the cloud continually analyse the battery status and take appropriate action to prevent or slow down cell aging. These measures can reduce the wear and tear on the battery, the most expensive component of an electric vehicle, by as much as 20 percent. Real-time data gathered from the vehicle and its surroundings plays a key role here. The cloud services utilize this data to optimize every single recharging process and to provide drivers with tailored driving tips on how to conserve battery power via the dash display.

According to experts, the average service life of today’s lithium-ion batteries is 8-10 years or between 500 and 1,000 charge cycles. Battery makers usually guarantee mileage of between 100,000 and 160,000 kilometers. But rapid battery charging, high numbers of charge cycles, an overly sporty driving style, and extremely high or low ambient temperatures are all sources of stress for batteries, which makes them age faster. Bosch’s cloud-based services are designed to recognize – and counter – these stress triggers. All battery-relevant data – e.g. current ambient temperature and charging habits – is first transmitted in real time to the cloud, where machine-learning algorithms evaluate the data. With these services, Bosch is not only offering a window into the battery’s current status at all times, but enabling a reliable forecast of a battery’s remaining service life and performance to be made for the first time. The new insights gained into a battery’s current status enable Bosch to also actively protect it against aging.

As with so many technologies that start out only in the pinnacle of luxury cars, air suspension has already begun to trickle down to more commonplace vehicles – this application is a perfect example and one to be aware of.

Arnott’s front strut for the Land Rover Discovery’s and Range Rover SPORT model is new and not remanufactured. Designed and assembled in the USA, Arnott’s exclusive design features a new custom-made shock absorber and is assembled with a multi-ply air spring bladder manufactured ContiTech.

Arnott’s new replacement air compressor P-2985 is from WABCO - the original equipment supplier to BMW. Unlike compressors that are simply modified to fit the vehicle, this compressor was designed by WABCO specifically for the BMW 5 Series F07 GT, F11 Touring, and 7 Series F01 & F02.

Greenox is the complete AdBlue® solution for operators of diesel engined vehicles and machinery in the UK and Ireland. AdBlue® is used to remove harmful Nitrous Oxide (NOx) emissions from the exhaust gas of diesel engines which are fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) after treatment systems. LED Retrofit What is LED retrofit?

It’s a solution for drivers who want to upgrade their lights and replace their halogen/conventional bulbs. The range has been developed for all car lighting functions, both interior and exterior.

What are the differences between Philips Ultinon LED and Philips X-tremeUltinon gen2 range?

In short, with projector optics it’s best to install X-tremeUltinon, whereas Ultinon works better in reflector optics. Philips Ultinon LED-HL lights are designed for reflector headlights and are not recommended for projector headlight systems. They have been designed to provide an upgrade from halogen to LED for reflector applications only. Philips X-tremeUltinon LED lights are designed specifically for complex projector headlights, but can also provide extra boost when used in reflector luminaires. They have been designed to deliver a truly OEM performance and serve in a wide variety of car models.

What is the purpose of the control box?

It takes the car voltage (12V) and converts it into whatever voltage is required for the LED to run properly. Depending on the performance needed, the type of the bulb, we can either include the control directly inside the bulb (Ultinon LED: performance is lower, the bulb doesn’t heat that much) or outside (X-tremeUltinon).

What is the difference between LED-FOG [≈H8/H11/H16] and LED-HL [≈H11] low beam?

The LED-FOG [≈H8/H11/H16] has been developed to fit in 3 different fog optic types: H8, H11, and H16. Therefore, the performance has been optimised for these specific applications. On the other hand, the LED-HL [≈H11] Low Beam (LB) version is performs best when projecting light on the road for low beam applications only. Due to its increased performance, Philips use the AirCool system instead of the AirFlux in the optic.

How do I know if the Philips LED Retrofit is compatible with my headlamp? To check compatibility of the Philips LED Retrofit with your car: 1. Check if the connector is also used as a bulb holder. 2. Measure the diameter of your headlamp and the space behind the headlight fixture. To be able to install the LED retrofit you need a minimum of 60mm diameter, and 70mm space behind the fixture. 3. What does ‘CANbus adapter’ stand for?

It stands for Control Area Network Bus adapter (or CEA: Canbus Enabling Adapter), which helps to maintain the right level of wattage to the bulb, preventing detection issues for your car (such as error messages or warning lights). Most new European models are equipped with CANbus adapters, so we strongly advise you to check with your dealer if your vehicle has these adapters before purchasing LED retrofit bulb

We chose to have separated CANbus for 2 reasons: 1 Most of the time it is not necessary to install the CANbus 2. When needed, it’s better to have it separate than integrated because integration inside the bulb increases the unit’s size and cost. Indicator lamps are the exception where the CANbus is mandatory (and automatically included in the box) so that the signal flashes at the right pace. Below are the applications where a CANbus could be/is necessary: o Turn indicators (front and rear) o Headlighting (low beam/high beam and fog) o Tail lights

After installing an LED light, would I get an error message on the dashboard?

LEDs have a lower wattage (power consumption) than conventional lights. Some cars are equipped with light detection system to warn the driver that a light has failed, meaning the system sends electric impulses in the to check that the lights are functioning. When the systems checks, the power emissions are too low to be detected. In such cases a CANbus adapter converts the power and avoids any error messages.

The Philips LED retrofit range has been designed for headlight units certified for halogen/conventional bulbs. EU member states have not yet adopted the legislation required to legalise LED retrofit bulbs, so they cannot be used on public roads in the EU.

What are the legal risks if I drive with LED retrofit bulbs on a public road?

The risks vary from one country to another, and depending on local law the sanctions may for instance include: o A fine and/or having to change back to certified, non-LED bulbs. o Your car might fail its NCT/MOT. LED bulb Canbus NOT compliant

How do I replace the incandescent bulb with a LED bulb? Is it difficult?

The entire Philips LED Retrofit range is a retrofit of halogen and conventional bulbs, making it easy to replace without any modification needed to the car. Simply follow the guidance on or in the package, and make sure prior to purchase that there is enough space in the bulb housing.

Which CANbus adapter do I need: 5W or 21W?

Why is LED retrofit technology still not legal on public roads in the European Union (EU)?

The 5W CANbus is used for interior applications, and number plate lighting. The 21W CANbus is used for exterior applications such as tail lights and low/high beam lights. Always refer to the original wattage of the halogen/conventional lamp. As an example, a P21W usually draws 21W, whereas LED-RED [P21W] has a wattage of 1.9W. The gap is then 21W-1.9W = 19.1W. This means that to compensate this gap of wattage, you should use a Philips 21W CANbus.

Warning

No LED retrofit products are currently legal on public roads in the EU unless the bulbs are sealed in their housings and both bulb and housing have been approved for use together. LED Retrofit products can only be used on “closed” roads.
