BIOGRAPHIES Impact Award – Barbara Benedict

Born into the family that published The Burlington Free Press over three generations, Mrs. Benedict learned from her parents and grandparents the importance of education and community service. Barbara and her husband attended South Burlington schools and, after graduating from college, reared their three children while living and working in Germany, Texas, and Arizona. For the last dozen years, Barbara has led the J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation, named for her parents, in its efforts to make it easier for Vermonters to obtain the education and training that lead to promising jobs. She believes that accessible and high-quality education that’s responsive to changing times is vital for Vermonters—and that CCV’s commitment to accessibility, quality, and relevance is vital for Vermont.

Community Service Award – Patricia Fontaine

Patricia Fontaine is an educator, poet, raptor-rehabilitation volunteer, donor activist, and social justice advocate. She holds master’s degrees in counseling psychology and transformative language arts and taught women’s studies for 20 years. Inspired by creativity and resilience, she offers expressive art and writing classes for anyone dealing with illness and care-partners.

She facilitates racial justice workshops with SURJ-BTV (Showing Up for Racial Justice) and The Peace & Justice Center. Patricia lives in Shelburne and is a member of the Social Services Committee, Equity & Diversity Task Force, and leads a book discussion/activism series on racial justice.

Faculty Service Award – Pam Monder

Pam Monder is a life-long lover of learning. She earned her M.Ed. at the University of Maryland before moving to Vermont with her husband and two children. For 37 years, she has taught a variety of subjects from pre-K to college. She has been a CCV instructor since 2006, teaching everything from Spanish and math to English and world mythology. She has been a member of the Family and Child Services Standing Committee at Rutland Mental Health for over 15 years. She loves to travel, and has led CCV students on study abroad excursions to Greece and Spain. She is a Five-Star Phi Theta Kappa advisor and the proud recipient of three Excellence in Teaching awards, including two at CCV. Her pastimes include hand crafting, camping, gardening, and historical reenacting, and she is an 18th-century foodways enthusiast. Pam enjoys sharing her passion for learning new things, her enthusiasm for tackling challenges, and her curiosity about everything.

Student Speaker – Amanda Letourneau

Amanda Letourneau grew up on her family’s farm and participated in the dairy industry for many years. In 2016, she was involved in a tragic car accident, and in 2019 made the difficult decision to amputate a leg. Within months of her surgery, Amanda joined the CCV study abroad trip to Belize, where she pushed herself mentally and physically on a rigorous journey that included hiking, swimming, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and visiting ancient Mayan ruins. Amanda completed her associate degree in liberal studies in December of 2019 and earned one of CCV’s 2020 leadership scholarships. A tough, hardworking Vermonter who loves photography and spending time with her niece and nephew, Amanda hopes to pursue a career in counseling.

Student Speaker – Ashleigh du Plessis

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Ashleigh relocated to Vermont in 2019 with her husband and three young children to return to school full time. She was previously a marketing and events coordinator, and is graduating summa cum laude from CCV with a degree in STEM studies.

With a growing interest in allied health and education, she plans to further explore these areas to gain more knowledge and apply these skills in a variety of settings.
