Small Mayors, big awards for booming city

Anna Reynolds, City of Hobart Mayor HELLO, It’s wonderful that Hobart has been declared as a ‘City of Literature’

by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

Hobart joins a distinguished group of 42 Cities of Literature alongside Edinburgh, Prague, Barcelona, Dublin and Quebec. The title is a boost to my goal of Hobart being recognised internationally as a city of knowledge, science and creativity.

The nomination was the result of a group of passionate volunteers from TAS Writers, Libraries Tasmania, University of Tasmania, Brand Tasmania and Fullers Bookshop.

I knew that our nomination was built on very solid foundations, including: • The work done by Tasmania’s Aboriginal community to revive this island’s original culture and stories with palawa kani, a hybrid of lutruwita’s indigenous languages.

• Australia’s first novel was published in Hobart in 1818; Hobart had the nation’s first public library; and we published the nation’s first ‘free press’ newspaper.

• Today we’re home to a many award-winning and best-selling authors who punch well above their weight in terms of national and international prizes won.

In the past few weeks I was also delighted to announce the winners of this year’s Children’s Mayor Program. I introduced this ‘Children’s Mayor’ initiative three years to involve children in work of

Council and to increase democratic awareness and civic engagement among them.

Olive Nielsen from Princes Street Primary is this year’s winner with a great proposal for a tram to improve traffic, reduce emissions and make it easier for people without cars to get around.

Other ideas put forward by Hobart children included: • Bella Child (St Mary’s College) proposes that the Council support a device-free fun day to raise awareness for all the fun family activities we can do in our beautiful city of Hobart without devices.

• Caroline Senkbeil (Fahan School) proposes to put GPS trackers on Metro buses so that Google Maps could provide realtime data as to when and where a bus is.

• Isabelle Brown (Lenah Valley Primary) identified that the pedestrian crossing across the Domain Highway to the Botanic Gardens is dangerous and proposes a pedestrian overpass.

• Jonah Eleot Kearon (Sandy Bay Infant School) proposes to turn off the street lights at 10pm to stop light pollution and make the stars more visible in Hobart.

These children will have an afternoon at Council hearing from staff about their ideas and our Mayor and Deputy will read their proposals out as part of our Annual General Meeting in December.

One final thing I wanted to mention is a new app that was launched recently by the Resilient Building Council. It’s a free tool that helps you assess the resilience of your home to bushfire and also generates a list of tasks to help you improve the ability of your home to cope with ember attack.

Young leaders have their say THE winner of this year’s Hobart’s Children’s Mayor Program was crowned last month, with 12-yearold Olive Nielsen from Princes Street Primary School winning for her submission “Let’s power Hobart SUSTAINABLY!”.

Students from primary schools across Hobart were invited to participate by crafting a short manifesto outlining how they would enhance the city for its youngest residents, beginning with the phrase, “If I was Children’s Mayor of

Olive proposed a tram circuit to improve traffic, reduce CO2 emissions and assist tourists, locals and students in their travel.

“The Hobart Children’s Mayor Program is an exciting opportunity for our youngest citizens to learn about the democratic process and actively contribute to their city,” Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“Olive has shown forethought and clear thinking in addressing a number of issues with this one idea.”

Olive’s submission even outlined a proposed route for the tram, running from Wrest Point along Sandy Bay Road and into Hobart’s CBD. “It would give school kids a safe and easy way to get to school if their parents are unable to

drive them, and also it would help Hobart reduce its carbon footprint and be as environmentally friendly as possible,” Olive said.

“It feels quite special to win. I collaborated with my grandpa for some of the information because he is a traffic consultant, so I’d like to say a special thanks to him.”

Alongside Olive the Children’s Deputy Lord Mayor was also announced, with 12-yearold Bella Child from St Mary’s Collage winning for her submission which encouraged people to have a “Device Free Funday” and spend time with their friends and family.

The Children’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor will shadow the Lord Mayor for a day, attending meetings and experiencing a day in the life of the Hobart Lord Mayor.

TSO gets country twang from Wolfe Brothers AN unlikely collaboration between local country music stars The Wolfe Brothers and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra will be one of the headline acts of the TSO’s 2024 concert season.

Tom and Nick Wolfe will play alongside a full

orchestra, performing songs from their 10-year catalogue and some brand-new releases, at shows in Hobart and Launceston.

“We’re thrilled to be sharing the stage with the TSO in 2024,” Nick Wolfe said.

“They’re not your

typical backing band but we’re super-excited by the prospect of joining forces to celebrate home-grown music-making in Tassie.”

TSO CEO Caroline Sharpen said regardless of what the orchestra performed or where it played, every performance would be a special,

emotion-filled adventure.

“The 2024 season includes unique events like a concert of video game music and highenergy performances with home-grown superstars The Wolfe Brothers,” Ms Sharpen said.

“Whether it’s our full orchestra featuring an

international virtuoso, intimate chamber music at Woolmers, an Obscura performance at the Odeon or a live sessions pub-style gig in Queenstown, experiencing the TSO live is joyous.

“In 2024 there’s something for the most

seasoned music-lover, the whole family and anyone wanting to try something new.”

Arts Minister Madeleine Ogilvie said the diversity of events on offer in the program meant there was something for everyone to enjoy.

“Tasmanians have some fabulous events to look forward to in this year’s program,” she said.

“The exciting and diverse program is sure to see the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra continue to attract audiences from across Tasmania and Australia.”

THIS year’s Royal Hobart Show has been hailed as a huge success, with about 45,000 people visiting the Regatta Grounds over three days (26-28 October).

The Show returned to the city for the first time last year since moving to Glenorchy in 1904.

The move to the Regatta Grounds proved popular with patrons, bringing a surge in attendance and a new demographic to the event.

This year - the Regatta Grounds’ second of a three-year-deal to host the event while the Glenorchy Showgrounds is redeveloped - was even bigger and better.

Royal Agricultural Show of Tasmania CEO Scott Gadd said hosting the Show at the Regatta Grounds opened the event up to more sections of the community.

“We noticed a shift in our normal demographic last year with a lot more families from the inner city and southern suburbs attending compared to previous years,” he said.

“We invested heavily in the entertainment program again this year which is all included in the entry fee and we continue to keep the entry price as low as we can to make it affordable.”

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said it was terrific to see so many people enjoy the Show at the Regatta Grounds.

“We are so fortunate to have open space at the Regatta Grounds so close to the heart of Hobart for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

“It is worth remembering the Show is a community event with various volunteer committees drawn from our community and rural areas who organise everything from arts and crafts to sheep and cattle competitions.”

Action needed to end child poverty A PANEL of local leaders offered their insights and ideas for creating a positive future for all children in Tasmania at a special Anti-Poverty Week event in Hobart recently.

The ‘End Child Poverty in Tasmania’ Panel Discussion at the Glenorchy campus of Guilford Young College featured TasCOSS CEO Adrienne Picone; Uniting Vic. Tas family services manager Nicole Day, UTAS Business and Economics lecturer Dr Paul Blacklow, FoodBank Tas deputy chair Robert Higgins, former GYC student and youth advocate Melodee Estcourt; and St. Vincent de Paul Society national president Mark Gaetani and Tasmania CEO Heather Kent.

Mr Gaetani said 3.3 million people are living below the poverty line in Australia - including 761,000 children whose families lack

adequate food and struggle to pay essential household bills.

The combination of insecure housing and financial stress is especially damaging for children and Anti-Poverty Week (15-27 October) drew attention to the children of families who receive inadequate social security payments and depend on emergency support from charities such as St Vincent de Paul Society.

“If you don’t have a good start in life a failure to thrive is embedded, impacting kids on many levels from their physical and emotional health through to their educational and longer life prospects,” Mr Gaetani said.

“It’s unbelievable that in a wealthy country like ours, one in six children live in poverty-affected households.

“With prices rising across the board and people increasingly falling behind, an increase in government support payments is urgent. Currently, people on JobSeeker are living on incomes well below the poverty line each fortnight.

“A proper increase to working age payments and other entitlements would help people to better afford the essentials of life.

Any increase in these payments will stimulate the economy, as people spend immediately, and locally, on essentials.

“We urge the Government and all MPs to urgently commit to bringing about a better life for those experiencing poverty, especially children, and to take resolute action to make this happen.”

MORE than 500 community groups, schools and households across southern Tasmania will take part in the national Garage Sale Trail this month, on a shared mission to find new homes for second-hand items and champion the cause for waste reduction.

Garage sales will be held across Australia on the weekends of November 11-12 and 18-19.

Garage Sale Trail general manager Barbara Gill said it was an opportunity to shine a spotlight on second -hand items and encourage people to reduce their environmental footprint.

“In 2022, Garage Sale Trail saved more than three million kilograms of products ending up in landfill,” she said.

“Australians are the world’s second biggest consumers of products and we need to start extending the use of items we already own to combat this.”

Southern Tasmania Regional Waste Authority (STRWA) chief executive officer Paul Jackson said the Garage Sale Trail was designed as a collective effort to promote reuse.

“This initiative has strong links to the STRWA’s main objectives,” he said.

“We aim to foster sustainable use of resources, support opportunities for the circular economy to reduce environmental impact and grow Tasmania’s economy.”

This year’s trail is being

supported and promoted by eight southern Tasmanian councils, with several local mayors showing their support.

“The more we can reduce waste going into landfill the better our environment will be and the more money we will save,” Glenorchy Mayor Bec Thomas said.

Mr Jackson said it was fantastic to see the southern region of Tasmania so well represented, with multiple southern councils participating.

“Being able to support our member councils to participate in the program is a great way to ensure the message of waste reduction continues to permeate throughout the community,” he said.

Hobart celebrates Birthday party for Mawson’s Huts its safe city status Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum is turning 10

A RECENT report released by international data company Numbeo measuring crime and safety has ranked Hobart as the third safest city in Australia behind Canberra and Adelaide.

“Hobart is a very safe city by both Australian and world standards with a low crime rate and a high safety index, particularly when it comes to the risk of being attacked, robbed or assaulted,” investment expert Michael Yardney said.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said this was reassuring information for residents and visitors in the Tasmanian capital but there was still work needed to maintain this level of safety.

“This report is a great reminder of what a safe place Hobart is compared to many other Australian and international cities,” she said.

“While there can be challenging issues at times, the data provides some reassurance and perspective.

“This is not to say more can’t be done to make everyone feel safe and comfortable in our city so we’ll continue to put time, effort and resources into ensuring Hobart has a safe and welcoming culture.”

The City of Hobart attributes this ranking to various initiatives including the Wellington Court refresh project, engaging youth outreach providers and programs,

increased private security in the bus mall and Elizabeth Street Mall and ongoing retail precinct activations leading up to Christmas.

Hobart City Economy Portfolio chair Louise Bloomfield said these initiatives were having positive impacts that combated anti-social behaviour in the city.

“All these projects are aimed at not only deterring antisocial behaviour but attracting shoppers and visitors to our retail districts,” she said.

“Public safety remains everyone’s responsibility and the city will be doing all it can so to make sure we have a busy, bustling and safe Hobart leading up to Christmas and beyond.”

THE Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum on Hobart’s waterfront will hold a free family day next month to help celebrate the attraction’s 10th anniversary.

For almost 10 years, the Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum on Hobart’s waterfront has reminded locals and visitors of the exceptional conservation work being undertaken by the Mawson’s Huts Foundation at the site of Mawson’s original huts at Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay, in the far eastern sector of the Australian Antarctic Territory.

Mawson’s huts

were built during the “heroic era” of Antarctic exploration. They were used as the main base for two years by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911-14, led by Sir Douglas Mawson.

Today, the huts are Australia’s southernmost listed heritage site undergoing a significant conservation program.

Over the past decade the Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum has attracted and educated thousands of visitors.

As well as providing a source of funding for the necessary Mawson’s Huts conservation works, the Replica Museum emphasises

the importance of the conservation work and showcases Australia’s continuing endeavours in Antarctica.

To help celebrate the Replica Museum’s 10th anniversary, a free family event has been organised for Sunday, 3 December from 10am to 3pm.

The event includes free admission to the museum, face painting, wandering Antarcticrelated characters, science demonstrations, an Antarctic-themed historic walk around the waterfront, and an opportunity to meet working sled dogs.

Wheel deal for a healthier commute WITH the cost of living skyrocketing recently, bicycle enthusiasts are encouraging motorists to switch to cycling for their daily work commutes to reduce their costs and environmental impact.

These messages echoed through a sizable crowd at the Bicycle Network’s annual Ride2Work Day breakfast on Hobart’s waterfront last month.

Bicycle Network’s Tasmanian public affairs manager Alison Hetherington said Ride2Work Day was a great time for people to stop and think about how many trips they could ride rather than drive.

“With petrol prices more than $2 a litre and other costs piling up, riding to work can help save you money while getting some exercise,” she said.

Councils talk future plans ELECTED members of the Hobart and Glenorchy city councils met recently to strengthen relationships and explore opportunities for future collaboration.

Councillors and Aldermen met at the New Town Rowing Centre to discuss synergies between the two cities. They feel there is an opportunity to get a better deal from State and Federal governments by working more closely together to advocate on issues of common interest to residents of the two cities.

“We are already working together on a range of initiatives such as the Greater Hobart Strategic Partnership, the Northern Suburbs Transit Corridor and the bushfire awareness project, Sparking Conversations, Igniting Action, to name just a few,” Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“So, it makes sense to look at ways to deepen our working relationship.”

The Hobart CEO and Glenorchy general manager will now prepare a report for a future joint meeting of the two councils at a later date.

“Riding to work is an easy way to fit in the 30 minutes of daily exercise you need to ward off preventable diseases and improve mental health.

“If you live too far away to ride, driving part of the way, parking for free and riding into work can help save on parking and fuel costs.”

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said works are underway on new cycleways

on Argyle and Campbell streets, as the City of Hobart attempts to reduce transport emissions and provide more options for commuters.

“Separated cycleways improve riding confidence and comfort and give more of us the choice to ride for shorter trips instead of driving,” she said.

“They are the perfect way of helping people who live close to the CBD make the

switch from driving to work to riding.”

City of Hobart Mobility Portfolio chair Ryan Posselt said people who use active transport are more likely to be healthier and happier.

“Cycling is a convenient way to get around Hobart and increases inner-city vibrancy while decreasing traffic congestion, air pollution and noise,” he said.

Meeting of minds promotes workplace wellbeing

WHEN Sherri Ring founded The Mind Games in 2019, she intended to create a corporate event which would promote positive change for workplace mental health across Tasmania and beyond.

“The event is about businesses collaborating for positive change,” Ms Ring said.

“Mental health is top of the agenda for so many organisations, particularly following on from the challenges of the COVID pandemic.”

In 2024, the fourth iteration of The Mind Games at Princes Wharf will bolster the $240,000 the event has raised for mental health research over the past few years.

“I feel privileged to have the opportunity to continue our success and contribution to workplace mental health research,” Ms Ring said.

“Through my work I’m seeing many business leaders around Tasmania stepping up and making a commitment to foster mentally healthy workplaces.

“I believe we are experiencing a positive shift in how we prioritise wellbeing and businesses who are leading the way will really benefit from this.”

Ms Ring said she was excited to see how all 250 participants tackle the exciting challenges during the event’s teambuilding day.

“The unveiling of the challenges on the day is always a highlight,” she said.

“Having fun at work and being part of a collaborative team culture is an important contributor to mental health and wellbeing for staff and leaders.

“The Mind Games promises laughter, entertainment and the most fun you’ll ever have at work, with the added bonus of knowing you are contributing to mental health research.”

TSO and Dark Mofo win big at this year’s NLMAs

Young artists define a new Epoch YOUNG local artists like Onyx Tambasco have been encouraged to examine the world and our place within it, and how we continue to grow and change, through the ‘Hobart Current: Epoch’ biennial celebration of contemporary art.

Hobart Current is an innovative long-term partnership between the City of Hobart and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, with the city to this summer host a program of diverse community activities and exhibitions examining the notion of “Epoch”.

Organisers received more that

150 expressions of interest from artists living in Tasmania, interstate and overseas.

Ten successful applicants have created new works across a variety of media including visual arts, writing, performance, music, sound and screen and digital, responding to the “Epoch” theme chosen by Hobart Current creative director Chris Twite.

“We live in interesting times - plunged into global upheaval, shaken by local change and challenged to personally reflect,” he said.

THE Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Dark Mofo were among a handful of Tasmanian organisations, venues and performers recognised at the 2023 National Live Music Awards (NLMAs) in October.

The winners are determined through peer nominations, reviews and select public voting. Award events were held simultaneously across Australia, one in every state and territory.

The TSO won the Best Classical Act Award, showing its standing as a powerhouse in classical music by defeating highly regarded national talent such as the Australian String Quartet and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

“We are deeply honoured to have received this prestigious national award, which highlights our

musicians’ extraordinary dedication and talent,” TSO CEO Caroline Sharpen said.

“This award is a testament to the orchestra’s exceptional artistry and commitment to Tasmanian audiences.”

Dark Mofo, which has previously won six NLMAs, took home two more awards: Best Live Event in Tasmania and Live Event of the Year.

Dark Mofo organising company DarkLab was also recognised, with music program manager Sam Dowson winning the Tasmanian Annual Industry Award.

Smooth movers win award ARTHRITIS and Osteoporosis Tasmania’s Smoother Movers strength training program has won the Social Value and Community Impact Award at the national AUSactive Awards.

AUSactive is the peak body for Australia’s exercise and health sector, with its annual awards highlighting the country’s premier exercise professionals, programs and businesses.

Arthritis and Osteoporosis Tasmania CEO Jackie Slyp said Smoother Movers started as a small pilot program in 2019 and now has 15 classes each week across locations including South Hobart, Lenah Valley, Glenorchy, Clarence, Lindisfarne, Midway Point and Tranmere.

“We are honoured to have achieved this award which is a testament to the hard work our small team has put into the development of the Smoother

Movers strength training program,” she said.

“Arthritis and Osteoporosis Tasmania remains dedicated to its ongoing efforts to improve health and wellbeing for the one in four Tasmanians living with arthritis.

“We endeavour to help people find ways to be more physically active and exercise is an important first step.”

Incorporating balance, endurance, flexibility and strengthbased exercises which can be modified according to personal fitness level, medical history and goals, the Smoother Movers strength training program helps people maintain mobility, build and retain strength and manage arthritis.

Group leader Emma Watson said the program had noticeable effects on participants’ daily lives after just a few classes.

“I’ve had participants enter the

program with issues standing up from a chair and after a few sessions they can comfortably do up to 10 sit-to-stand exercises,” she said.

Participant Ros Escott said the classes were a great opportunity to stay fit in a welcoming and social environment.

“It’s great to have an accessible and affordable program in the community that can help my arthritis,” she said.

“I’ve been coming to classes for 18 months and made some great friends already. We often catch up for a cuppa feeling refreshed after a session.”

Thanks to a two-year grant from the Tasmanian Government’s Healthy Tasmania Fund, Arthritis and Osteoporosis Tasmania is now set to expand the Smoother Movers program to the state’s north and north-west, with classes likely to start in Launceston and Longford soon.

Diwali lights up city PREPARE to be immersed in a vibrant and inclusive celebration of multiculturalism and diversity when the popular Diwali Festival of Lights returns to Hobart this month.

Now in its sixth year in Hobart, the Diwali Festival of Lights is a free event that celebrates the rich tapestry of cultures that makes up Tasmania, providing a rare opportunity for many diverse cultural groups from across India and South-East Asia to come together for an enchanting evening of tradition, culture, food and social networking.

An opportunity to learn from one another, share stories and foster deeper connections, the event has become extremely popular in recent years, regularly attracting more than 3,000 attendees.

Visitors are treated to a dazzling display of cultural performances that transport them to different corners of the world, from traditional dances to soul-stirring music.

There’s also an array of mouth-watering delicacies from around the globe, prepared and served up by various ethnic not-for-profit groups.

The Festival of Lights is hosted each year

by Diwali Tasmania, a community-driven organisation dedicated to celebrating diversity and fostering unity among all Tasmanians.

The festival is one of the organisation’s flagship events, promoting cultural exchange and a sense of belonging within the community.

“Our aim is to create an atmosphere of cultural appreciation,

understanding and unity,” Deepavali Tasmania chair Ajith Ramadas said.

“It’s a platform for our diverse community to come together and showcase the beauty of their heritage.”

Hobart City says hello, stranger CAROLINE Shannon (15) is part of a generation whose formative years have been significantly impacted by COVID, leading to increased levels of isolation and loneliness.

A new creative project Caroline participated in during Mental Health Week attempted to combat growing social isolation by encouraging locals of all ages to strike up conversations with strangers.

“There’s so many stories that older people have to tell and it was really interesting to hear what they had to say,” Caroline said.

“Everyone involved in the project was so friendly and even though none of us had met before we all

bonded really well.”

‘Hello Stranger!’ was developed by local artist Rose Turtle Ertler as a recorded soundtrack of local teenagers and older people, with the hope that listeners would be inspired to connect with a stranger themselves.

“Loneliness and isolation can affect any age group, and recently there has been some connection lost between young and old,” Ms Turtle Ertler said.

“Any chance to bring different generations together is a wonderful opportunity that should be embraced.

“This project is about promoting the mental health benefits of talking

with a stranger and how positive conversations can connect us all.”

The project was promoted by the City of Hobart as a free exhibit available to the public at the Salamanca and Farmgate markets during Mental Health Week.

“There has been a significant increase in loneliness and social isolation post-COVID,” Deputy Lord Mayor Helen Burnett said.

“The city is proud to support this project, which has already brought together different generations with assistance from Youth ARC and Mathers House.

“This is a great opportunity to listen, connect and breakdown social barriers in our community.”

Garden fair bloomin’ success for Narryna HISTORIC Narryna House in Battery Point recently hosted its third annual Plant and Garden Fair, welcoming more than 250 visitors to peruse its floral displays.

Long queues of eager visitors formed early in the morning, with locals keen to get their hands on one of the popular potted plants and enjoy the sunny spring day with a cup of tea.

The enthusiastic attendees raised muchneeded funds which will go directly into the upkeep of the garden and Narryna

house itself.

“Our events bring the entire community together and our high-quality produce has built a loyal following,” volunteer coordinator Michelle Daffy said.

“Every plant comes directly from the Narryna garden and all are from the 19th century which is in keeping with the history of the house itself.”

The Narryna House garden is run by a small group of volunteers who are always in need of some extra green thumbs to help out.

“Working in the garden is a wonderful learning experience and a worthwhile way to support a local piece of history,” garden volunteer Judy McGrath said.

“We welcome volunteers of all experience levels to come help out in our beautiful and welcoming garden space,” Ms Daffy added.

The Narryna team is now preparing for its Christmas Spirit Fair on 11 December, which will feature 18 Tasmanian distillers setting up shop on the house grounds.

Windebard Bound comes back home aged 14–17 were on board for the final leg of the journey: an 11-day adventure from Devonport to Hobart where they were warmly welcomed home by Tasmanian Governor Barbara Baker, who commended the sailors on their work and presented them with certificates and ceremonial plaques.

Windeward Bound Captain Sarah Parry said the program promotes understanding, inclusiveness and community by bringing together young people of vastly different backgrounds.

THE one in six Tasmanians who are caring for a family member or friend were recognised, thanked and celebrated during National Carers Week (15-21 October), with a series of ‘Cuppa with a Carer’ morning teas and luncheons held across the state.

Carers Tasmania CEO Dr Samantha Fox said the 2022 National Carer Survey revealed that three in five Tasmanian carers experienced financial stress and almost half felt socially isolated.

“Anyone at any time can become a carer for a family member or friend, often without warning and with no alternatives,” she said.

“Tasmanian carers on average spend more than 100 hours per

week caring. They give up around $39,600 in earnings and $17,700 in superannuation for each year they are a primary carer.

“It’s time to value our carers.”

That includes carers like Maria Grist, who cares for her husband John as he battles Parkinson’s disease.

“There’s a lot of worrying - you’re on tenterhooks because you never know what’s going to be required of you on any given day,” Maria said.

“Always being there, being on call all the time … it affects your mental health, your emotional wellbeing, and your time management. You’ve got to plan your own life around it.

“Even if people know you’re caring for someone, they don’t

realise how much is involved in that, how much emotional energy you’re putting into that 24/7.”

Maria encouraged other carers to reach out to Care2Serve, Tasmania’s Carer Gateway to see what assistance is available.

“We’re getting meals delivered three days a week which is a great help,” she said.

“I am also getting counselling from a psychologist through Care2Serve, and the peer group meetings are helpful and informative too.

“Through Care2Serve we’ve also recently started getting some help once a fortnight with the housework, which gives me a bit of a break. It’s wonderful.”

MICHELLE Sykes narrowly avoided having a life-threatening heart attack thanks to the intervention of Calvary Lenah Valley’s Cardiac Centre.

The 57-year-old said she was lucky to have survived a complete blockage to the main artery in her heart.

After a particularly hard workout, Michelle was experiencing chest pains and heaviness in

her shoulders and arms.

Knowing it was strange, she saw her GP who referred her to the Calvary Lenah Valley clinic.

Within 48 hours she was diagnosed with heart disease, and the major blockage was confirmed only days later.

“I was stunned really, but mostly frightened,” Michelle said.

“There was relief because I had an answer

to what was going on, but there was fear of what lay ahead and of what could have happened.”

A stent was put into the artery, and after an overnight stay in critical care Michelle was back at her Midway Point home recovering.

“We know there is a real need in the community for this type of service and the number of people already seen through the clinic confirms that, with referrals growing as more GPs learn of our service,” Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital general manager Marcus DiMartino said.

Since opening in April, the clinic has helped more than 100 patients diagnose their chest pains and receive lifesaving medical support.

“I think it is really important that people know that the clinic or other services are there and don’t put their head in the sand,” Michelle said.

“Don’t just think it will come right because it may not. I’m just so very, very lucky.”

AUSTRALIA Post’s 2023 Community Grants program will provide funding for 72 not-forprofit community groups across the country.

In Tasmania, the grant has been awarded to four groups providing mental health support to a variety of Tasmanians, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the LGBTQI+ community, the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse, people with a disability or care commitments, and older Australians.

One of the recipients of

the grant is Hobart’s Be Hers Foundation, which will use the funding to run the Be Hers Hub - a safe haven where migrant, refugee and at-risk women can connect with each other and engage in activities that promote mental wellbeing, as well as access resources and services tailored to their needs.

“Australia Post’s Community Grants program has been put in place to empower organisations to continue their impactful work and make a positive difference in the lives of countless

Australians,” Australia Post executive general manager Tanny Mangos said.

“This year, we are supporting community groups fostering stronger mental health and wellbeing within their local communities.

“We’re incredibly proud of our Community Grants Program and its role in supporting these groups as they work to deliver positive outcomes across Australia.”

The Tasmanian recipients of the grant will each receive up to $10,000 in funding.

Think fresh: don’t waste stale bread A NEW campaign launched by Eat Well Tasmania is urging consumers to be more conscious about food wastage, with a particular focus on the alarming volume of discarded bread.

Too Good to Waste campaign manager Libby Mckay said the initiative was designed to empower Tasmanians to enjoy healthy homecooked meals while reducing personal food waste.

“Australians throw out 456 million loaves of bread every year this makes bread one of the nation’s most wasted foods,” she said.

“Even when its stale and old bread is a delicious ingredient that can be used at home in a variety of ways.

“We have been incredibly lucky

through this campaign to work with some of Tasmania’s finest chefs and most passionate food producers.

“With their help we have crafted some accessible recipes that can help Tasmanians properly use older produce in their cooking.”

Pigeon Hole Bakery managing director Jay Patey said better planning and simple recipes could help reduce food waste both commercially and at home.

“It’s really upsetting to see the amount of wasted bread especially considering the amount of time and effort that goes into making each loaf,” he said.

Centenary Torch Relay leaves a Legacy LEGACY recently celebrated a century of voluntary service to the families of fallen or injured veterans with its Centenary Torch Relay which completed a 12-kilometre journey across Hobart on 5 October.

The Legacy torch started its journey at Anglesea Barracks in Hobart and ended at Lindisfarne’s Anzac Park with the Governor of Tasmania, Barbara Baker AC, completing the final

leg of the journey.

Torchbearer and legatee David Waddle said the relay was of particular significance to Hobart Legacy.

“Hobart is the birthplace of Legacy in Australia and that’s why it’s important to celebrate it here today,” he said.

“I’m incredibly honoured to be the first Hobart torchbearer for this extraordinary event in Legacy’s history.

“It’s a privilege to

be a part of this great team as we make our way through the city and raise awareness for the services Legacy provide.”

Legacy Australia chairman Eric Easterbrook said the relay was a fitting way to celebrate the organisation’s work and promote the vital role it played in people’s lives.

“Across Australia there are more than 40,000 beneficiaries we support including 1200 children

and 1000 people with disability,” he said.

“One hundred years is a significant milestone and it’s wonderful to be here in person for the Hobart leg.”

The torch completed its six-month, 50,000 kilometre journey at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance on 13 October after visiting all 44 Legacy clubs in Australia.

Hospitality Awards for Excellence MORE than 700 representatives gathered at the Hobart Botanical Gardens this month to celebrate the diversity and quality of Tasmania’s hospitality sector at the annual Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) Awards for Excellence.

Hobart’s Crowne Plaza won the award for Best Meeting and Events.

North Hobart newcomer Ogee claimed the Best Fine Dining award and Restaurant of the Year (Metro); while Rude Boy took out Best Bar Experience.

The Salamanca Inn was named Best SelfContained Apartments or Suites; Bar Wa Izakaya was awarded Best International or Speciality Cuisine; and the team at Hadley’s Orient Hotel took home Best Tourism Experience.

Movenpick Hobart snared the title

of Best Superior Accommodation (4-4.5 stars) while in the most nominated category of the year, Devonport’s Frankie J’s beat out 57 other contenders to be named Best Casual Dining venue.

This year featured a record number of nominations, with more than 200 venues across the state submitting almost 500 total entries.

“This has proven to be another exceptional event which showcased the best hospitality businesses across the state,” THA CEO Steve Old said.

“The quality and volume of the nominations this year was unprecedented.

“The casual dining award had 58 nominations alone, and in most of the categories the judges found it extremely difficult to split the votes.

“All our winners will now get the opportunity to represent Tasmania at the national awards at Adelaide Oval on 27 November and will have great confidence in continuing the state’s success of the past few years.”

Numbers show city’s economy shines at night HOBART businesses that come alive after dark are having a significant impact on the local economy according to a new report released by the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors.

The annual Measuring the Australian Night Time Economy 2021-22 report showed that Hobart’s night-time economy makes up nine per cent of the city’s total economy and 14 per cent of its total employment – well above the national averages of five per cent and 7.8 per cent.

The number of Hobart businesses from the core night-time economy sector grew by five per cent to 644 in 2021-22, surpassing prepandemic levels by 17 per cent.

Leisure and Entertainment establishments have attracted spending with an impressive growth in turnover of 10 per cent to $194m, driven by increases in creative and performing arts (+22 per cent/+$20m). But the retail and accommodation sub-sectors have faced challenges.

“From this report, we know how powerful Hobart’s night-time economy can be for the city, but we acknowledge that we are in tough economic times,” Hobart Lord

Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“The night time economy employs more than 7000 people, which makes up more than 14 per cent of Hobart’s total employment.

“The City of Hobart’s recently released City Economy Strategy identifies strengthening and supporting the night-time economy to grow as a as a key action for our city’s prosperity.

“A robust night-time economy will strengthen the vibrancy of our city and make it more resilient, productive, liveable and sustainable.”

Former chair of Melbourne’s Night Time Economy committee Penny Miles recently visited Hobart and said night-time businesses and programs are a vital part of the wealth, health and vitality of our cities.

“They pump money into the economy and provide an array of jobs, but they are more than this,” she said.

“The after-hours sector makes our cities hum. They provide experiences and activities to connect us, showcase civic culture and celebrate our unique identity to attract and keep visitors coming back for more.”

Hobart recognised with novel award HOBART has been declared a ‘City of Literature’ by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Following a rigorous nomination process, Hobart was awarded as part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network program, becoming just the second Australian city (after Melbourne) to be declared a City of Literature.

“The cities in our Creative Cities Network are leading the way when it comes to enhancing access to culture and galvanising the power of creativity

for urban resilience and development,” UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said.

Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the Hobart City Council was honoured to receive the award, and hopes it will encourage Hobart’s creative industries to continue producing groundbreaking and innovative literature.

“This award will strengthen Hobart’s expanding literary sector and encourage investment in the city’s creative industries,” she said.

“It will build pride and confidence and give

creative people, producers, retailers and educational institutions new opportunities to tap into an international community of peers.

“Hobart is home to a multitude of award-winning and best-selling authors who punch well above their weight in terms of national and international prizes won including the Vogel Award, Stella Prize, Commonwealth Writers Prize, Prime Minister’s Literary Awards and the Booker Prize.”

In an effort to curve the Tasmania’s illiteracy rate and encourage more people

to get involved in reading and writing, Libraries Tasmania is using Hobart’s new literary status to promote its services.

“This is clearly a literary city and state, but it’s also a place where low literacy is a challenge,” Libraries Tasmania executive director Sue McKerracher said.

“We plan to take advantage of this designation at the State Library in Hobart and through our statewide public library network to promote reading, writing and a love of books as something for everyone.”

The Mac Point Draft Precinct Plan is now available.

2024-25 Budget Development Process – Community Consultation The City of Hobart’s budget process for the 2024-25 budget will be open for community consultation during November 2023. The City will assess the community budget submissions against the City’s strategic priorities and financial capacity.

Fire Management Policy The HCC endorsed the draft Fire Management that sets out the approach the City of Hobart takes to fire management on council-managed land.

The City commits about $1.8 million per year to fire management, with the Fire and Biodiversity Program maintaining a burn crew of 30 people.

Property Valuation Base for Council Rating The City of Hobart will change the method of property valuation it uses for calculating council rates from Assessed Annual Value to Capital Value.

The community benefit is that Capital Value performs best of all the valuation bases, and better in comparison to Assessed Annual Value. It is deemed to be easier to

understand, more sustainable, most equitable and least volatile.

Petition Response – A Safe and Continuous Pedestrian Link for Strickland Avenue from Cascade Silos to the intersection of Marlyn Road The HCC noted the concerns raised in the petition. Additionally, it was agreed that Council officers provide administrative support to any community grant applications put forward from the community relating to this matter.

Plastic in the Hobart Rivulet The HCC has approved seeking a report into waste found in the Hobart Rivulet following the weather event on October 21.

Details are being sought on the steps taken at McRobies Waste Management Centre in the lead up to the weather event, the amount of waste that made its way into the rivulet, what improvements can be made to infrastructure and procedures, arrangements for clean ups, promotion of wheelie bin latches, and an investigation into cancelling recycling and waste collection on the day of predicted weather events.

Jobs boost for Bethlehem House EXCITING collaborations are supporting the St Vincent De Paul Society’s ‘Special Works’, including an innovative program to assist Bethlehem House residents to secure employment.

Supported and funded by the Tasmanian Priory of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller, the Employability Program will help improve resident’s employability skills such as computer literacy, resume writing, interview skills and finding appropriate on-site work experience.

Bethlehem House executive manager Stephen Shreeve said the Employability Program would be a

significant inclusion in Bethlehem House’s operations and could potentially involve up to 100 participants in its first year.

“The Employability Program is designed to develop our residents and prepare them to make positive steps towards employment,” he said.

“This program will focus on the specific needs of our residents and provide them with the tools, knowledge and confidence to enter or re-enter the workspace.”

The Prior of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in Tasmania, Chevalier Edward Gauden, said the Tasmanian Priory was committed to improving the lives of all community members.

“We look forward to working closely with Vinnies to help people struggling in our community, and the Employability Program at Bethlehem House is just the start,” he said.

“Employment opens up many opportunities for men, including breaking the cycle of homelessness.”

Vinnies CEO Heather Kent said the new Bethlehem House at the site of the former Waratah Hotel would have the capacity to accommodate up to 75 men.

“The Employability Program will help residents gain back their independence and reintegrate into community, family and friendship networks,” she said.

Comedy capers calling for Hobart Rep this Christmas

Spring Fling at Glenview AN important aspect in caring for our seniors is to ensure that each person has the sense that there is a good and safe community around them.

Glenview Community Services staff organise many evenings of entertainment for the residents of Windsor Street and Korongee including the annual Spring Fling - a night of dance and live music to encourage residents and their families to socialise with our community.

Besides the wellbeing benefits of attending a dance, the event is good for bringing back memories and getting physical - even if you are dancing in a seat or wheelchair.

The Spring Fling is a wonderful event for families to attend, like going out to a show as a group in the evening - maybe even better, because our residents don’t have to travel and our care staff are on-hand if needed.

Posters announcing the dance appear around

the residences, and a sense of anticipation builds. People book hair appointments, choose an outfit, and invite family along. The Glenview activities team transforms the everyday areas into special venues with lights and themed tableware.

On the day, house companions and activities staff suddenly become fashion stylists and makeup artists to help those attending to look their best.

At this year’s Spring Fling, John from Merton got up and sang. We liked him before; we are in awe of him now!

We are thankful to Johnny Wright who performed on guitar and vocals, and the fabulous TasSwing Lindy Mob dancers who are all top-rate entertainers who genuinely consider Glenview residents.

The Lindy Mob took particular care to speak and dance with the audience before Johnny concluded the evening with some well-loved, classic songs. It’s illuminating to see the residents happy, smiling and remembering how to dance.

Having events to look forward to is an enjoyable part of life for all of us!

Each week our team create a new curated menu of delicious and nutritious meal options with an emphasis on

flavour and variety.

The NDIS guidelines allow certain participants the ability to access meal preparation as part of their funding. As the cost of the ingredients are ineligible, we allow for 70 per cent of the cost of the meals in addition to the delivery fee to be claimed back.

For HCP participants we only charge 30 per cent of the meal cost upfront and then do the administration and follow-up with your Care/ Plan Manager, so you don’t need to do anything.

There is a quick, one-off process (outlined below) that you need to go

through to be approved, but once you’re up and running there is nothing else involved.

How does it work?

NDIS If you are on a Plan Managed account, we only charge 30 per cent of the meal cost upfront and then do the administration and follow-up with your Plan Manager, so you don’t need to do anything.

If you are on a SelfManaged account, our cooks will provide you with an NDIS-approved invoice of which you then claim back 70 per cent via your online portal.

HCP If you are on a SelfManaged plan, when you process your order you will only be asked to pay 30 per cent of the meal cost upfront. We then liaise with your Care/Plan Manager to recover the balance.

What is the process?

STEP 1 Log in to your Cookaborough account.

If you haven’t set up an account, either go to cookaborough.com.au or click on the QR code below.

STEP 2 Go to My Accounts.

STEP 3

Go to the NDIS/HCP section.

STEP 4 Select New Quote and fill in your details.

STEP 5 (NDIS) If you selected the Plan Managed option: You, the cook and your Plan Manager will receive a copy of the Quote.

The Plan Manager then approves your Quote or follows up any issues.

Once approved, you can place an order.

If you selected the SelfManaged option: You and the cook will receive a copy of the Quote. You are then able to place an order. The required invoice template will be emailed when an

order is placed. You are then able to claim back 70 per cent of the cost of your meal and delivery fee via your online portal.

STEP 5 (HCP) If wanting to part-pay upfront, select ‘I will only part-pay upfront.’ You, the cook and your Care/ Plan Manager will receive a copy of the Quote. The cook then connects with your Care/Plan Manager and approves your account. Once approved, you are able place an order.

The recent awful news of a fatal dog attack in the south of the state has understandably shocked and saddened us all.

Dog attacks are a serious problem that require a serious and effective longterm solution.

It is important, though, not to respond to populist calls to ban specific breeds as a way to address this problem The RSPCA does not support severe restrictions on the ownership of certain dog breeds, or dog types through the introduction of breed-specific legislation – and we are not alone in this view.

The Australian Veterinary Association, along with the national veterinary associations of Britain, the United States and Canada, support the view that breed-specific approaches to dog regulation are not effective, as they do not protect the public by reducing dog bite incidents.

The failure of breed-specific legislation to prevent dog attacks is due to a number of factors including: • breed on its own is not an effective indicator or predictor of aggression in dogs; • the breed of dogs cannot be precisely determined by appearance or by DNA analysis; • how to ensure all dog owners are made responsible for the actions of their dogs; • how to reduce the risk of any dog within the general population exhibiting aggressive or dangerous behaviour towards people; and • It ignores the human element whereby dog owners who desire this kind of dog will simply substitute another breed of dog of similar size, strength and perception of aggressive tendencies.

Dog bites are the result of complex behaviours caused by the interaction of genetic factors, pain and medical issues, early experience, socialisation and training, the external environment they live in, and the behaviour of the victim.

To be successful, any preventative strategy needs to address all of these factors, as well as provide mechanisms to protect the community as a whole.

Knowing the non-verbal and verbal cues of anxiety in dogs is a fundamental part of safe animal/dog interactions. Yet there is a significant gap in community knowledge about how to live alongside and interact with animals, particularly dogs. This lack of understanding can lead to unsafe interactions and increase the risk of dog attacks.

The key to this is the ‘Deed not Breed’ principle needs to be applied, which asserts that aggression in dogs is not tied to any particular breed, but is influenced by various individual factors and circumstances, not breed alone.

The importance of being proactive rather than reactive when it comes

rather than consequences.

A robust prevention strategy for dog attacks must contain the following key elements: • registration and microchipping of all dogs; • control of unrestrained and freeroaming animals; • provisions for the control of aggressive dogs; • desexing of non-breeding dogs; • training of owners and dogs; • socialisation with people and other animals; and • education of the public, and particularly children, in dog behaviour and bite prevention.

Underlying all of these issues, of course, is the fact that our animal welfare legislation and related regulations are outdated and lag well behind contemporary expectations.

Worse still, there is so little funding to resource the education and compliance programs needed to improve these conditions that there is little that can currently be done to improve this situation.

Tasmanians and our dogs have the right to demand more.

John and family are foster caring cats the Wright way JOHN Wright, his wife Susan and their family have fostered 54 cats and kittens for Ten Lives since March 2021.

“My wife Susan went to do the training and I was sitting at the kitchen table eating lunch when she came home,” John recalled.

“I said, ‘how did the training go?’ and she’s like ‘well…’, and she had a mum with five kittens in a crate!

“Everyone (at Ten Lives) has been

absolutely terrific, and they make it so easy to do the fostering because the communication is so good.”

You get a different experience with every cat or kitten you foster. Ten Lives will match kitties needing foster care to your home environment - whether that includes children or other pets – and fostering has become a family affair for the Wrights.

“My kids absolutely love it because they get

to be introduced to new cats all the time,” John said.

“And it’s not just my wife and I doing all the care. The kids help out heaps with it, so you have like the rewarding side of things.”

Ten Lives is encouraging families to become involved in foster caring over the summer holiday period, when we see an influx of cats and kittens requiring foster care.

“Each of the cats

that we’ve had have changed our home in a different way,” John said. “There’s been many times where I’ve come into the Centre to return a foster cat and left in tears because I really wanted to keep them.

“So it’s not always that easy, but we always know that they go to a good home.

“There’s been a couple of cats now that I’ve commented on their profiles on Facebook

and the new owners or in one case, the new owner’s daughter has got in contact with me to give me updates on how the cat’s gone and just the joy that brings is amazing.”

A day of mindfulness Jo Cordell-Cooper AS I morph into the exciting space of nature therapy and fitness for adventure, I’ve been offering some new experiences and they have been very well received.

I trained in mindfulness last year and have been offering beginner hiking sessions for many years now. I have just returned from a day retreat that blended quick and easy mindful techniques with easy and magnificent hiking in the Tasman National Park, followed by traditional basket weaving techniques using natural fibres.

All aim to connect you to nature, calm the mind, and safely allow you to explore beautiful places.

Our day began at Tasman National Park. We walked from Waterfall Bay and took in the main waterfall, which was really rushing as we’d had a rainy week.

We spotted a few green helmet orchids and some fungi and settled into our first mindful task, which I call microfocus. This

is the simple focus on just one thing like leaf, a fern or rain drop hanging from a tree – whatever attracted your attention.

This idea is to focus on that one thing and it is amazing what else you start to see when you try this! It only takes a minute and is followed by what I call microfocus or staring beyond that one thing that held your attention. The simplicity of this technique should not be underestimated. Our participants were seeing a whole other world – little insects, pollen, textures, diversity of colour and texture all now observed. It’s an easy way to calm the mind.

Following this we walked to the Tasman Bluff for gorgeous views out to sea from the dramatic coastline right down to Cape Hauy. This part of our retreat took a total of two hours of very easy walking. Try it – you’ll love it!

Next from a beachside cabin at Stewarts Bay Lodge we began to make our baskets from New Zealand flax, the leaves of which are easy to source. There is something about the process of

creation and the use of natural fibres that is inherently healing.

We spent the remainder of the day rolling between a delicious lunch, healing herbal teas, walking on the beach, and constructing our baskets.

What a beautiful and positive way to spend a day, experience mindfulness in several contexts and learn a new skill! I hope to be offering more day retreats like this again. Remember “self-care is health care”, and make contact if anything here resonates with you.

JackJumpers kick off home stand in style THE Tasmania JackJumpers kicked off the 2023-24 NBL home season in style last month, thrilling the soldout MyState Bank Arena crowd with a victory over the defending champion Sydney Kings.

Fans turned out in force to cheer on their team, with the JackJumpers solidifying their status as the hottest ticket in town.

A 30-21 second quarter from Scott Roth’s squad helped the JackJumpers build a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish in the second half, as the side held off several Sydney runs to claim the win 80-72.

Star import Milton Doyle led the way with 21 points, with new guard Jordon Crawford adding 15 points and fan favourite Jack McVeigh scoring 13. Former NBL MVP Jaylen Adams racked up 21 points for the Kings.

The JackJumpers then travelled to Melbourne to play United, with Doyle (25 points, including 14 in the final quarter) producing some late heroics to lead the team

to a 80-75 comeback victory.

The JackJumpers then easily accounted for the Illawarra Hawks at MyState Bank Arena in round three, running away with a dominant 103-73 win.

Doyle stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists, while Crawford had 17 points and 6 assists and McVeigh scored 15.

At the end of October, the JackJumpers sat in fifth place on the NBL ladder with a 4-4 record, after losing to Sydney on the road and Melbourne United at home.

They take on the New Zealand Breakers in Launceston on 16 November, before returning to Glenorchy to play Adelaide (2 December), Sydney (17 December) and SouthEast Melbourne on Christmas evening.

Runners’ marathon effort for the Royal THE 41st running of the Cadbury Marathon in January will support the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Research Foundation, with donations from entrants to aid the local charity.

Starting and finishing at the Cadbury factory in Claremont, the Cadbury Marathon enables people of all running abilities to set new challenges and get active. More than 1600 people took part in the 40th running of the popular event earlier this year.

“We’re looking forward to lacing up our running shoes alongside

participants in this iconic event to raise important funds for medical research and make strides towards a healthier future for all,” RHH Foundation CEO Steph Furler said.

“Tasmania faces a higher burden of lifestyle-related illnesses compared to other states and territories.

“This underlines the need for initiatives like the Cadbury Marathon to promote the benefits of fitness and support vital medical research.”

Future Hurricanes are having a Blast MORE young girls are getting involved in cricket, with events like this year’s Hobart Hurricanes’ Community Cricket All Girl’s Colour Blast encouraging them to take part.

Held at Cornelian Bay on 12 October, the event saw more than 100 young girls under the age of 12 come together to practice their batting and bowling and have some fun with water guns, water balloons and a colour run.

“We love getting out

here, and personally I love getting out and giving back to the community by playing my role in hopefully creating some little Hurricanes for the future,” Hobart Hurricanes wicketkeeper Emma Manix-Geeves said.

“They are having a great time, and I know girls look forward to these sessions.”

The introduction of girls-only clinics has encouraged more young women to get involved in cricket, showing

them there is a pathway they can follow to the top of the sport.

“We have seen an increase in young girls playing, especially now with the girls-only clinics,” Hurricanes leg spinner Maisy Gibson said.

“This is where I started when it was Milo Cricket back in the day, so to see it continue as Woolworths Blast is amazing.

“To have them out and playing local cricket is great - that’s where we all started as well.”

Junior aces represent state SOME of Hobart’s top young tennis stars represented Tasmania as part of an under 12s team at the National School Sport Australia Bruce Cup Championship in Brisbane last month.

Ellie Richardson (Hobart), Amelie Dooley (Tolmans Hill), Elsa Grant (Taroona), Mason Kocharunchitt (Tolmans Hill) and Ethan Little (Sandy Bay) all served up their best on the national stage, helping the team claim seventh place overall.

“This was one of the strongest teams we’ve ever had,” coach Alyssa Hibberd said.

“There were some experienced players who have competed in this event before and a really good bunch of new kids coming through.”

Coach Andrew Bourke said he wanted the kids to make the most of their opportunities.

“It’s easy to get down sometimes if the game isn’t going your way but it’s important to keep your head and racquet up,” he said.

“Every point counts. We had singles, doubles and mixed doubles games all working toward the overall team score so it was important to fight to the very end and try and gain the best possible result for the

team.”

The team coaches are optimistic that the lessons learnt from competitions like this will instil values and habits that the players would utilise both in sports and other facets of their lives.

“Seeing these kids grow along the journey to the point where they are representing the state is awesome,” Ms Hibberd said.

“There are so many benefits to playing tennis. The ability to get back up and keep fighting after a difficult point, game or match is a skill that these kids will hopefully carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

DIAMONDS SPARKLE IN HOBART DEBUT

A STRIKING new mural has been unveiled at the Southern Tasmania Netball Association in New Town to commemorate the Australian Diamonds Netball Team’s first ever visit to Hobart last month.

More than 7000 fans flocked to MyState Bank Arena in October to witness the Diamonds take on the South Africa Proteas and

emerge with two emphatic victories, winning 67-52 on 29 October and 77-50 two nights later.

Painted by Tasmanian artist Joel Gajda, the new mural features images of current Australian Diamonds captain Liz Watson and Tasmanian netball icon Ash Mewer.

“I feel very humbled to be commemorated in this way and to be pictured alongside

Ash Mewer is a great honour,” Watson said.

“The entire squad has loved visiting Tasmania. The sellout crowds have been full of energy and it’s really special to be playing in Hobart for the first time.

“Hopefully we can leave a legacy that will inspire the next generation of Tasmanian talent.”

Netball Tasmania CEO

Mitch Coulson said the mural would be a great reminder for all young Tasmanian netballers of what they could aspire to be.

“This is a fantastic time for netball in Tasmania as we host the world champion Diamonds for the first time in seven years,” he said.

“It’s been wonderful to see the Diamonds out in the community running clinics

and open training sessions and inspiring the next generation of Tasmanian netballers in all corners of the state.

“This is a great moment to leverage this opportunity and push our case for more elite netball to be played in our state.”

Liberal member for Clark Simon Behrakis said the mural was an important legacy of

the Diamond’s inaugural matches in Hobart.

“The mural is a fantastic celebration of netball, joining the dots between grassroots Tasmanian netball talent through to the highest elite level,” he said.

“Recognising the pathway in any sport inspires the next generation to not only stay active, but to strive to be their best.”
