For many older Tasmanians, staying in the comfort of their own home and community as they age is not just a preference—it’s a cherished goal.

Continuing to live safely in your home as you get older may be as simple as installing the right supports like a rail, ramp or making some bathroom alterations. Even modest changes to a home can make all the difference in ensuring you can stay at home as long as you want to.

With the Australian Government’s new Support at Home program in effect from 1 November, it’s a great time to think ahead, as future funding for assistive

technology and home modifications will look a little different.

Under the new system, there will be new limits on how much funding can be used for Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (ATHM).

In practical terms, this means people should start planning now, as government funding may not cover as much of the costs as it used to.

And if your house needs more extensive modifications to suit

THE City of Hobart has launched a new online access map to make navigation easier for people with disability, families and visitors to find accessible places across the city.

The map highlights accessible parking, toilets, key destinations and facilities to support inclusion and

independence.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the interactive map brought together digital innovation and good information about accessibility.

“Being an accessible city is about providing opportunities to as many people as possible,” she said.

“By providing clear,

reliable information in formats that suit different needs we are making our city more welcoming, inclusive and accessible for everyone.”

Access advisory committee member Lynda Hanlon said the map had the capacity to break barriers, particularly for those living with or supporting someone with

disability.

“The map provides an equal experience for everyone, enhancing quality of life,” she said.

The map helps people plan their journey, feel welcome and included, save time, reduce stress and improve wayfinding so people can choose how they want to move around the city.

Sector unites to lift children out of poverty

DURING Anti-Poverty Week, the St Vincent de Paul Society partnered with Catholic Care Tasmania, The Salvation Army, Hobart City Mission, Foodbank and TasCOSS to show the devastating impact the cost-of-living crisis is having on Tasmania’s children.

To raise awareness, the partner community service providers used lunchboxes to show the scale of child poverty situation in Australia.

There were 60 lunchboxes displayed, of which 10 were empty, to reflect the reality of the situation for passers by.

St Vincent de Paul Society’s CEO Heather Kent said this AntiPoverty Week they were speaking up for an end to poverty and give support for a nourished future for all Tasmanian children.

“In Tasmania, our children are experiencing

the brunt of the cost-ofliving crisis,” she said.

“No family should have to choose between sending their children to school with food or paying their bills.”

“Failing to address poverty leaves our state paying dearly for lost opportunities, increased health and welfare spending and ever-growing demand on overstretched crisis services such as those our organisations provide around Tasmania.”

CatholicCare CEO Julia Mangan said real change was required all of us, governments, businesses and communities, to address the root causes of poverty, such as housing insecurity, inadequate wages and social exclusion.

“It is a time for us all to listen deeply and work together to bring real change for people who

are doing it though,” Ms Mangan said.

Foodbank CEO Cameron Johns said 35 per cent of Tasmanian households were experiencing food insecurity and as a consequence, in the last 12 months, Foodbank Tasmania had distributed more than 800,998 kilograms of food relief, enough for more than 1.63 million meals for Tasmanians in need.

“Despite our best efforts we need to do more, with unmet demand for food relief still increasing,” Mr Johns said.

The Salvations Army’s Major Johnmark Mead said their recent Social Justice Stocktake, and work on the ground, show that more than half of Tasmanians see financial hardship as a major issue in their community.

“Seventy-five per cent

identified housing affordability as a key concern, with access to affordable healthcare also seen as a growing challenge, with very few GP clinics offering bulk billing,” Major Mead said.

Hobart City Mission CEO Harvey Lennon said Anti-Poverty Week reminded us that reducing poverty was not only a policy goal.

“It is a moral responsibility to build a Tasmania where everyone has what they need to participate fully in life, to raise their children, to feel part of something bigger than their own struggle,” Mr Lennon said.

“We will continue to advocate for sustainable government support, because funding for essentials like food, housing, and counselling should never be uncertain.”

Macquarie Point Stadium Design Showcase opens TASMANIANS were invited to explore the designs behind the new Macquarie Point Stadium, with a Design Showcase at the Goods Shed in early November.

The free public event highlighted the stadium’s designs and offered visitors access to detailed plans, a 3D model incorporating both architecture and engineering and material samples for the interior and exterior.

Minister for Macquarie Point Urban Renewal Eric Abetz said the event offered Tasmanians an opportunity to learn about the inspiring work that has shaped the innovative design and development of the

multipurpose stadium.

“This showcase demonstrates the extensive design work and planning that has been undertaken to advance the delivery of our state-of-the-art multipurpose stadium here at Macquarie Point,” Minister Abetz said.

“The stadium is more than just sketches on a page, it is a carefully designed venue that offers function spaces, restaurants and bars.

“It will unlock opportunities to host more and larger scale functions, events, sports games and tournaments and entertainment.”

Minister Abetz said the showcase was also

a chance to capture feedback and help shape key elements of the stadium, from helping select seat colours, to sharing ideas on opportunities to capture and celebrate Tasmanian stories in spaces across the stadium.

“We look forward to bringing this showcase to places around the state in the new year,” he said.

Macquarie Point Development Corporation CEO Anne Beach said the detailed design work was as far as we take it before finalising details to issue plans for construction.

“Designing complex infrastructure is an iterative process,” she

said.

“We have worked closely with Stadiums Tasmania as the future operator, users and a range of specialist technicians to deliver a stadium that not only meets the detailed technical requirements of a range of sporting codes, but has also been stress-tested to consider how the spaces can be best used and activated.

“We’ve been busy working through more than 1500 pages of plans and schedules to pull out snapshots to share, as well as preparing information boards to help explain the thinking behind some of the venue’s key features.”

Pipeline track project unlocks new access to the mountain HOBART visitors and locals can hike, bike or pram along wide open tracks from Waterworks reserve to the foothills of Kunanyi/Mount Wellington after the completion of the pipeline track extension.

to explore Hobart’s bushland tracks.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the new trail had created a more accessible connection for walkers, trail runners and bike riders and was flat enough for families with young children.

“We’ve installed new interpretation panels that tell a history of Hobart’s mountain water supply system and how it has helped

save lives by providing clean, fresh water to a growing city in the late 1800s,” she said.

“The pipeline track passes beautiful old sandstone troughs once used to deliver water from the slopes of Kunanyi into the upper reservoir in waterworks reserve.

“The new track will draw even more people to the popular picnic spot and to this special part of Hobart’s public bushland.”

Mini Roughy makes a splash FROM FRONT PAGE

MARITIME Museum Tasmania has acquired an innovative 3D-printed scale model of Aurora Australis, the celebrated, orange-hulled icebreaker that was a familiar sight on Hobart’s waterfront for more than two decades.

Funded by contributions to the Museum’s 2024 Annual Appeal, the 1:100 model was created by NSW-based modelmaker Nick Dare.

“Building the Aurora Australis for the Maritime Museum was both a huge honour and a formidable challenge,” Mr Dare said.

“In total, it took about four months of concentrated effort, with most of that time DISTRIBUTORS

dedicated to research and developing the digital modelling files.

“The largest section of the hull required around 12 hours to print, produced in five pieces using 4.5 kilograms of a tough, durable plastic similar to the material LEGO is made from.

“The rest of the model was printed using five litres of UV resin.”

Maritime Museum Tasmania vice-president professor Michael Stoddart said the Aurora Australis held a special place in the hearts of Tasmanians.

“For many years Hobart residents watched the Aurora sail out each summer for the

long journey south to Antarctica,” he said.

“We are delighted to have this finely detailed model to celebrate the vessel’s legacy.”

Aurora Australis served as Australia’s principal Antarctic research and resupply vessel from 1989 to 2020.

During its career the ship transported more than 14,000 expeditioners

St Vincent de Paul Society launch annual toy drive THE St Vincent de Paul Society Tasmania has launched a Christmas Toy Drive to support families experiencing hardship and is encouraging small

businesses, corporations, schools, sporting clubs and community groups to donate toys and gifts.

CEO Heather Kent said she was excited to launch the annual toy

appeal.

“It is important to bring joy to families at Christmas when sometimes things are just a little bit too tight to buy a toy,” she said.

“We are enthusiastic to receive new toys up to the value of $25 that consider a range of ages in new condition and unwrapped ready for distribution across the

state at Christmas time.”

Small change, big difference for young Tasmanians A local fundraising effort has changed lives in Hobart and is set to make a statewide impact with the launch of the Dollars for Change program.

The initiative by Home Base and Hospitality

Tasmania invites diners to donate their loose change in small envelopes provided with their bill or by scanning a QR code to make an online contribution.

Dianne Underwood said the expansion of Dollars for Change was an opportunity for the community to enjoy a lovely meal while giving back.

“The money stays in

Tasmania and supports young people with services and support for their wellbeing, employment pathways and helping them find safe and affordable accommodation,” she

said.

The program began in 2011 at Battery Point restaurant Da Angelo’s where Angelo Fraraccio and Marco Caporelli, and their team proudly led the change.

Co-owner Angelo Fraraccio said the initiative was rewarding to see the idea grow from local to statewide.

“The response was huge, and it was thanks to our customers who believed

in it and embraced it that we decided to go bigger,” he said.

“We are proud that we can be a part of it and spread the message, where spare change can help young Tasmanians.”

Community bushfire protection plans: Know where to go as a last resort WHEN bushfire threatens, do you know where you will go as a last resort?

Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) has developed Community Bushfire Protection Plans tailored for at-risk communities across Tasmania.

These plans offer guidance on how to identify safer places in your own area and identify bushfire places of last resort (Nearby Safer Places).”

TFS director of community fire safety Chris Collins said it was important to plan for bushfires, whether you choose to stay and defend or leave early.

“Understanding bushfire risks and taking steps to reduce

them is essential, especially for those in bushfire-prone areas,” he said.

“We want people to be informed, prepared and ready.”

TFS has more than 160 plans available, including the introduction of 12 new protection plans for the state this year.

Remember, a last resort should never be your only option.

Leaving early is the safest approach – giving you the time to get far away from at-risk areas.

A blockbuster opening for new Hobart LEGO Store HOBART has welcomed a world of colour, creativity and play with the opening of Tasmania’s first LEGO certified store.

Located at 38 Elizabeth Street, the 330 square metre store marked a major milestone for the LEGO Group and Alquemie Group, bringing the beloved brand’s hands-on experience to Tasmanian fans for the first time.

The new store was designed as a vibrant celebration of Tasmanian culture, wildlife and landmarks, featuring largescale brick models that pay tribute to the state’s unique character.

Among them are ten native bird species recreated in LEGO form, a detailed mosaic of the Hobart waterfront and Mount Wellington/Kunanyi made from more than 19,000 pieces and 43,000 piece model that includes life size Tasmanian devils.

New mural transforms Hobart landmark TUCKED away along the Sandy Bay coastline, a once-unassuming pump station has been transformed into a vibrant artwork through a community-led art initiative celebrating local pride and healthy waterways.

Led by Tasmanian muralist Bec Adamczewski, the Blinking Billy Mural brought together emerging artists Kate Deane and Shiloh Quilliam to collaborate on a vibrant visual story celebrating Tasmania’s marine environment and the voices of its youth.

Ms Adamczewski said

the artwork, which was supported by the Art for the Sea project, celebrated the rich biodiversity of timtumili minanya (The River Derwent) and nearby oceans.

“This work highlights endemic, vulnerable and endangered species alongside the impact of introduced life and human activity,” she said.

“Each side of the Blinking Billy facade flows with oceanic rhythms, currents, kelp, sea stars, jellyfish and soft corals, forming a tapestry of movement and life.

“Woven baskets, used for millennia by Tasmanian Palawa people

to gather shellfish like abalone, speak to the enduring abundance of the sea and its deep cultural significance.”

TasWater’s head of brand and insights Jill Cummins said the mural was part of a broader Asset Art Program.

“This program transforms infrastructure into public art to foster pride, reduce vandalism and spark conversation about water, community and country,” she said.

“Blinking Billy is such an iconic spot and it’s an honour to help turn it into a canvas for youth-led storytelling,” “This mural is about

more than just colour, it’s about connection, climate, and the power of young voices to shape our future.”

The Blinking Billy Point Mural was a TasWaterowned and commissioned project with the artists supported by the Art for the Sea Project made possible through the City of Hobart Youth Climate Action Fund with financial support from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Rewilding of the New Town Rivulet estuary THE transformation of the New Town Rivulet estuary will be celebrated with a special community event on Saturday 8 November 2025 from 1pm to 4pm.

Nine months ago the mouth of the rivulet was lined with crumbling concrete walls, broken stormwater pipes and littered with abandoned trolleys and debris.

It has now been completely revitalised thanks to a joint rewilding project between the City of Hobart and Glenorchy City Council.

The extensive restoration has seen the removal of old concrete infrastructure and the planting of more than 30,000 native trees, shrubs, grasses and water plants.

“Just nine months ago the mouth of the New Town Rivulet was lined by crumbling concrete walls, broken stormwater pipes and littered with abandoned shopping trolleys and other rubbish,” Hobart Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“It is now changing into a more attractive place filled with native trees, grasses, shrubs and water plants designed to attract native wildlife.

“Restoring the New Town Rivulet where it enters the River Derwent is good for the environment and good for the local community, who can be very proud of this transformation.

“The native plants and landscaping will also help manage historical contamination in the rivulet bed and stabilise the embankments.”

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the project represented a significant step forward for local environmental restoration and community wellbeing.

“This rewilding project has truly brought the New Town Rivulet back to life,” she said.

“What was once a degraded, concrete-lined waterway is now a thriving natural habitat — a place the community can reconnect with and take

pride in.

“The return of birdlife and native vegetation shows just how powerful these collaborative environmental projects can be.”

The community celebration will give locals the chance to experience

the revitalised estuary firsthand.

Visitors can explore new walking tracks, learn about restored wetland habitats and enjoy a range of information stalls and family-friendly activities.

The event will feature free face painting and ice-

cream for children, a coffee van with nibbles and the opportunity to take home a free native plant for your own garden.

“This event is about celebrating what’s been achieved together and inviting everyone to come see the transformation for

themselves,” Mayor Hickey said.

“It’s a wonderful reminder of the difference we can make when communities and councils work hand-in-hand with nature.”

The event is free to attend but attendees are

encouraged to register their ticket to help organisers plan for the day.

Cyclists roll in for Hobart breakfast CYCLISTS across Hobart kicked off their morning with coffee, community and a celebration of pedal power at this year’s Bicycle Network Ride2Work Day breakfast on Wednesday 15 October.

waterfront, the annual event provided local riders with expert advice, bike checks and the chance to learn more about e-bikes and community cycling initiatives.

Alison Hetherington said the 2025 breakfast was one of the biggest yet, bringing together a wide range of cycling groups, mechanics and advocates.

“We supported more stalls this year so cycling commuters could get a bike check, explore

e-bikes and connect with community groups all while sipping a coffee before work,” she said.

“As well as our usual offerings of muffins, coffee, pedal-powered smoothies and a bike mechanic, we were joined by several other

stallholders.

“Hobart Bike Kitchen and Streets People Love Hobart were looking for more volunteers to help fix bikes and advocate for safer streets, while the City of Hobart’s E-bike Library, 99 Bikes and The Bike Van displayed a

great selection of e-bikes, including cargo models.”

Ms Hetherington said the event was designed to inspire both seasoned riders and those considering making cycling part of their daily commute.

“Riding to work is easy

once you get used to it, but most of us need some inspiration and support to get going and keep it up,” she said.

The Ride2Work Day breakfast was also celebrated in Kingston and Launceston.

50 years of employment achievement AT the official reception to mark the Royal Hobart Show, Tasmanian Governor Barbara Baker AC awarded Debbie Emmerton Life Membership of the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania (RAST).

The award celebrated her 50 years of service as an employee of the RAST. Debbie began working for the Society in December 1975 when she was 16-years-old as a receptionist and worked under six RAST CEOs and several presidents.

Current CEO Scott Gadd said Debbie had been part of the many changes at the Society over the past 50 years.

“She was there when they constructed the Main Grandstand in the early 1980s and witnessed the recent demolition of the same grandstand to make way for the current redevelopment of the showgrounds,” he said.

“Debbie’s experience and knowledge make her central to the smooth running of the Show.

“She has been a great contributor on the Society’s current journey as we embrace new technologies and a new vision.”

Debbie is now the Society’s Administrative Supervisor and oversees several Show sections and memberships as well as assisting with the Showground Motorhome Park.

THE organisers of Dark Mofo, Australia’s midwinter solstice festival, have confirmed that the 2026 edition will be held in Lutruwita/Tasmania from Thursday 11 to Monday 22 June.

Alongside the festival’s large-scale public art installations, live performances and

exclusive musical acts, Dark Mofo 2026 will include familiar rituals including Winter Feast, Night Mass, the OgohOgoh burning and the Nude Solstice Swim as the sun rises after the longest night of the year.

“It’s exciting to share Dark Mofo’s 2026 dates as we take our first steps

towards next year’s festival where we’ll once again bathe the streets in red, feast by firelight and indulge in a smorgasbord of art, music and performance,” Dark Mofo artistic director Chris Twite said.

“Following a one year hiatus, the return of Dark Mofo in 2025 attracted

more than 50,000 interstate and overseas visitors to Tasmania and delivered over $67 million in economic benefit to the state.

“We’re so grateful for the continued support from David Walsh and that of the Tasmanian Government, not to mention Tasmanian

businesses, residents and visitors, all of whom enable us to continue celebrating the dark.”

Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events Jane Howlett said Dark Mofo was an iconic Tasmanian event which drove visitation to the state during the off season.

“Dark Mofo has something for everyone and we know how important it is to our tourism and hospitality sector during the quieter months.

“Visitors to Tasmanian

events stay longer than the average visitor and stays have grown, now 2.5 nights longer than they were in 2019, coinciding with significant government investment support.’

Chair of the Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Network Dr Michael Kelly said every nomination would tell a story of courage, connection and resilience.

“Suicide prevention doesn’t only happen in clinical or service

settings,” he said.

“It’s about everyday conversations, breaking down stigma and ensuring people feel safe to seek help.

“Suicide is multifaceted and as a result we need a range of responses.”

St Vincent de Paul Tasmania launches 2025 Christmas Appeal THE St Vincent de Paul Society is calling on Tasmanians to dig deep this festive season as more individuals and families than ever before seek support heading into Christmas.

With everyday prices continuing to rise dramatically across the community and many struggling to recover from the financial pressures of the past year, the Society’s emergency relief teams across the state are reporting record requests for assistance.

State president Corey McGrath said Christmas was often the hardest time of year for those already doing it tough.

“For most of us the festive period is a time for family celebrations and the joy of Christmas, but for far too many Tasmanians it is a time of stress and worry,” he said.

“The number of people reaching out for help has never been higher and many are facing impossible choices between paying rent and purchasing small gifts for their children, or food and household basics just to get by day to day.

“In the past 12-months, the Society has helped 3,529 families and

19,182 individuals with our Emergency Relief service and roughly one in ten of our companions (clients) are experiencing homelessness.

Member and volunteer Leigh Delaney, who has been involved with the Society for more than 40 years, said the Vinnies Christmas Appeal addressed the growing levels of isolation and stress faced by Tasmanians during the holiday season.

“Everyone hopes for a safe and joyful Christmas, but sadly that isn’t the reality for too many Tasmanians,” he said.

“The work the Society does at this time of year provides material help and promotes the need for more social inclusion and community connection.

“The look on someone’s face when they receive the support they need is truly special and people are so

grateful for the compassion and care our members and volunteers show.

“When we’re able to support someone in urgent need with a Christmas hamper or a food voucher, we are also trying to remind them that there are people in the community who care and want them to stay safe, warm and connected.”

Hobart TMS offering new pathways for depression treatment FOR Tasmanians living with treatment-resistant depression, Hobart TMS is providing renewed hope through an innovative, non-invasive therapy that is now Medicaresupported.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic pulses to improve functioning of specific brain areas linked to mood regulation.

Unlike older treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy, TMS does not induce seizures or require anaesthesia, and patients experience no memory loss.

Psychiatrist Dr Yvonne Turnier-Shea said the evidence for TMS was compelling.

“Statistically, remission rates for major depression with TMS treatment are around 50 to 60 per cent at our centre – that’s significantly higher than antidepressant medication alone, which sits closer to 30 to 40 per cent,” she said.

“For some patients, it (TMS) has been truly lifechanging, allowing them to

return to work, reconnect with family and live more fully.”

The Hobart TMS team is led by local psychiatrists Professor Saxby Pridmore, Dr Marzena Rybak and Dr Yvonne Turnier-Shea and offers some of the longest experience in TMS therapy in Australia.

Professor Saxby Pridmore, a pioneer in the field, introduced the first TMS machine to the Southern Hemisphere in 1996.

Since then, the team has treated thousands of patients and published widely on the effectiveness of the therapy.

“We’re a small, dedicated team and what sets us apart is the level of care we provide,” Dr Turnier-Shea said.

“All treatments are delivered by experienced nurses and patients are reviewed regularly by psychiatrists throughout their course of therapy so that treatment can be tailored to the individual.”

“We pride ourselves on being easily accessible, approachable and empathic whilst making

the treatment as affordable as possible.”

TMS typically involves 20 to 35 daily sessions across four to seven weeks.

While the commitment is intensive, many patients describe the process as surprisingly comfortable, some even find it relaxing enough to fall asleep during treatment.

With the closure of St Helen’s Hospital, Hobart TMS became the first dedicated outpatient clinic in Tasmania, making the therapy more accessible to the community.

“Patients often arrive with various initial concerns,” Dr TurnierShea said “But once they understand the process and commence treatment, their anxieties quickly subside and the feedback we receive is overwhelmingly positive.”

Golden Wattle Café hosts morning tea for people living with dementia

THE Goodwood Community Centre recently hosted a weekly morning tea at the Golden Wattle Café for people living with dementia, their caregivers and the community.

Co-founder of the Golden Wattle Cafe Agnes Firth said it opened mainly for people with dementia and their carers to give them a safe place to come and interact with others.

“We try to bring

dementia into the community which is one of the reasons why I opened it,” she said.

“We want people to be able to be seen with dementia without being embarrassed or ashamed of it.”

The volunteers are a huge part of the initiative, and their contribution of board games, painting, craft and entertainment activities has addressed social isolation and loneliness.

Volunteer Robyn Maggs said the lack of understanding about dementia was a huge thing, and it was important to be able to go out in the community.

“My biggest thing

about this place is it gives people living with dementia a chance to come somewhere where they are understood,” she said.

“People are afraid and the lack of understanding about dementia is a

huge thing, and this is a place where people can come and know they are understood.”

The café is five dollars for a cup of tea and snacks and runs every Monday from 10 am to 12pm.

THE New Town Sporting Precinct has taken a major step forward with the completion of expanded netball courts and upgrades to the bowls green.

Stage one of the redevelopment saw the transformation of a third bowling green into two new lit netball courts, now managed by the Southern Tasmanian Netball Association.

Enhancements to the second green include synthetic surrounds and sun protection, improving comfort and usability for players.

The $1.65 million redevelopment was made possible through a $1.5 million contribution from the State Government, $100,000 from the City of Hobart, and additional support from stakeholders.

Further improvements include

new pickleball court markings and upgraded amenities for Southern ITF Taekwon-Do. “It is my pleasure to celebrate completion of Stage 1 works at the New Town Sporting Precinct,” Minister for Sports Nick Duigan said.

“The Tasmanian Government’s total investment to this project was $1.5 million, to build healthier and more active communities.

“There has been huge efforts for the project partners, City of Hobart, contractors and the community members who helped bring this project to life.

“These new amenities are designed to meet the needs of our community and enhance participation in sport and recreation for generations to come.”

Buckingham Bowls Club president Patricia Zapotocky said the all-weather shelters installed would add to the comfort of bowlers.

“It provides protection from the sun, encourages spectators to attend to watch matches improving the Club atmosphere and community engagement,” she said.

“It has encouraged more members to participate in bowling competitions.

“The synthetic grass has eliminated the need to mow around the surrounds of the green.

“This has been an added bonus for our aging members to maintain this area.”

More than 980,000 Aussies are being urged to collect their share of over $271 million in unpaid Medicare benefits by simply updating their bank account details with Medicare.

The benefits are owed to people who don’t have current bank details registered with Medicare and can’t be paid.

There are people in every state and territory and every age group who are owed money. Young people are owed the most, with more than $62 million owed to 250,000 people aged between 18-24.

The benefit amounts vary, but the average amount owed is around $275.

So, how does it happen?

Updating your personal details with Medicare isn’t always top of mind when you change banks, or change address.

The reality is we can’t pay this money unless we know for sure where it’s going.

Services Australia is directly contacting

450,000 customers with unpaid Medicare benefits, who have Medicare linked to myGov, to help them register their bank details. Sometimes, it’s hard for us to get in touch if we don’t have your current phone number or address What do you need to do?

It’s a simple process that only takes a couple of minutes. You just need to make sure your bank details are registered with Medicare.

I also encourage you to have a chat with your family members to make sure their details are registered too.

Most people already have a Medicare online account – you probably created one during the pandemic to access your proof of vaccination.

Go to myGov and select Medicare or use the official myGov app.

Once you’re in your Medicare online account through my.gov.au, go to ‘My details’ and select ‘Update now’, and make sure your bank details are correct. That’s all you need to do.

Once you’ve given us the information we need, unpaid Medicare benefits are usually paid within 3 days.

I always encourage people to give the online options a go, but, of course if you’re not comfortable going online, you can ring the Medicare number on 13 20 11.

Ten Lives resident Aqua

From timid to treasured WHEN Aqua first came into the care of Ten Lives, she was a tiny tortoiseshell kitten in need of a helping hand.

Alone, frightened and unsure of the world around her, she was one of the many young kittens who arrive at the shelter each year needing time, care and patience to help them grow into confident companions.

At first, Aqua was wary of people and hesitant to be touched.

Life had clearly been uncertain up to that point and she needed reassurance that she was safe.

The animal care team

took things slowly, offering warmth, gentle handling and plenty of quiet time.

Before long, her worried little face softened and her beautiful amber eyes began to sparkle with curiosity.

Once she was ready, Aqua went into foster care to continue her socialisation and was joyfully reunited with her sister, Aquia, who came into our care some two weeks earlier.

The pair immediately recognised one another, playing and curling up together as though no time had passed.

Foster homes play

a vital role for kittens like Aqua, providing a calm space to learn, play and grow.

Her foster carer worked patiently with her, using soft voices, gentle pats, and playtime to build her confidence.

Every day brought new progress — from tentative purrs and playful paw swats to full-blown zoomies around the room.

It didn’t take long for Aqua’s true personality to shine.

She turned out to be a lively, affectionate kitten who adored company.

She loved being held, happily leaning into

cuddles and responding with her delicate little mew and a joyful purr.

With her striking coat and graceful features, she quickly won hearts everywhere she went.

Aqua’s journey is a beautiful reminder of how much difference early care and socialisation make in a kitten’s life.

Between two and nine weeks of age, kittens are especially receptive to new experiences, sounds, and people — a crucial window that shapes their confidence as adults.

Getting them into care quickly gives them

the best chance at a happy, healthy future.

Thanks to the kindness of those who brought her to safety, the dedication of the Ten Lives team and the love of her foster carer, Aqua grew from a timid kitten into a confident young cat.

She now enjoys the life every cat deserves — one filled with warmth, comfort, and the security of knowing she’s home.

Tasmania Athletics launches into new season

Local canoer represents Tasmania in France TASMANIAN slalom canoeing paddler Claire Cements represented Tasmania in France at the under 23 World Championships in July.

Claire said she was excited for the France competition after competing overseas in multiple mini-series and international

competitions.

“I went over for about two months to do some training and compete in other small European races,” she said.

“My training has increased a lot over the past three years and after winning the Oceana Championships in Sydney I realized that I

could race competitively.

“That was the first race I had done with people my age and I remember thinking I can pursue more than local competition.”

Claire trains north of New Norfolk on white-water rapids, the Derwent River and other beaches further south

and said the community around her had fostered an uplifting training environment.

“The Tasmanian slalom canoeing community are lovely and so many people have helped me out of their own time which has made the sport feel safe,” she said.

Cripps Waratah Netball Club coaching line-up CRIPPS Waratah has announced the Tasmania Netball League coaching line-up for the 2026 season.

Fiona Geappen has been appointed Club Head Coach, leading the team into 2026. Sheis one of Tasmania’s most accomplished netball figures with experience as both a state and national representative player in addition to a coach of elite programs.

Vice President of Cripps Waratah Maria Gerathy said Fiona has already made a huge impact leading the 19U team.

“The club looks forward to her vision and leadership shaping Opens in the years ahead,” she said.

“Belinda Vinen is returning to the State League as Opens

Assistant Coach and has been a driving force within the club known for her passion, knowledge and connection.

“Making a return to Cripps Waratah as 19U Head Coach is Jasmin Bennett who is well respected for her ability to nurture and inspire young talent.

“Together Fiona, Belinda and Jasmin bring an exciting blend of experience, energy and expertise and their leadership will ensure Opens and 19U squads continues to thrive, while also strengthening the development of emerging talent across the club.”

With the new coaching team in place the Club is eager to begin the 2026 season and continue a tradition of excellence in the Tasmania Netball League.

LITTLE Athletics Tasmania is thrilled to announce registrations for the 2025-2026 season are officially open.

Centres across the state have commenced weekly meets and welcomed returning athletes and firsttime participants to experience fun, fitness, and friendships.

Little athletics promote physical development for children aged three to 15 through a variety of track and field events in a supportive and inclusive environment.

CEO of Little Athletics Tasmania Glen Taylor said now is a fantastic time to get involved in sport.

TASMANIAN RECOGNISED IN THE TOYOTA AFL VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS North Hobart junior football club’s Nathan Foale was named the AFL Community Coach of the Year, the third consecutive year Tasmania has taken the national award.

Each year the AFL

recognises volunteers and administrators for their outstanding contribution to Australian Football through the Toyota National Volunteer Awards - thirteen Tasmanians were

recognised with one taking national title.

Nathan, the director of coaching at the club, was honoured to receive the award and said everything he put in was for the kids and the club.

“As a club we’re

building a safe and welcoming environment for the kids and I’m just one part of an effort to get more kids into footy in Tassie,” he said.

“It’s good recognition for the work that’s gone in, but what I get back

from the boys and girls at the footy club far outweighs the time I put in.

“Watching them improve and grow as kids and the excitement of seeing them kick their first goal or take

their first mark is really enriching for me.”

This year the award has comprised 13 categories and recognised volunteers across Australia who have made outstanding contributions to

community football.

All AFL Auskick centres, schools, community clubs and leagues in each state and territory were invited to participate with more than 3,400 nominations received nationally.

Devils claim third straight premiership at AFL Open TASMANIA’S Inclusion side has claimed its third straight national title in the Division One Grand Final at the AFL Open.

The Devils fought off a strong South Australian side to take out the decider by 25 points (22-47).

Tasmania sailed through the week’s competitions unbeaten, the side almost untouchable on the field to claim their third national title in a row.

The AFL Open is the flagship national event for footballers with an intellectual disability and wheelchair players will see each state and territory represented, with the addition of a wheelchair team from the RSL and a blind & low vision exhibition match with players from the Victorian Blind League.

The 2025 AFL Open was held at La Trobe University Sports Precinct in Bundoora, Victoria.
