Major career step for Hobart’s next opera star A HOBART local will be announced as one of Opera Australia’s 2026-2027 Young Artists, commencing 1st July.

Lana Kains busked at the Salamanca Markets and the Elizabeth St Mall where she performed opera and other classical songs with backing tracks before joining the Opera Australia Young Artist Program.

The 18-month program accepts seven artists and offers them a full-time salary to undertake advanced training as well as international study opportunities and professional experience.

Ms Kains said she was grateful for the opportunity and the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream.

“For the first time

since I started university, I won’t have to split my focus between earning a living and my development as a performing artist,” she said.

“So many people said they wanted to see me on the big stage one day, and I am thrilled to be able to say that day is coming.

“I am really looking forward to working with Opera Australia’s excellent coaches and participating in performance projects which I hope will inspire today’s young musicians.

“We have a fantastic arts culture in this country and a long history of storytelling through music, and I am looking forward to where this next big step takes me in my journey as a part of that.”

SOUTHERN Tasmanians are once again being encouraged to embrace the spirit of Dark Mofo, with the popular Paint The Town Red photography competition returning for its 13th year.

Running from June 8 to 22, the competition invites people to capture photos of participating Paint The Town Red businesses, public spaces and Dark Mofo events as the city transforms for the annual winter festival.

Destination Southern Tasmania chief executive Alex Heroys said the competition had become a popular way for locals and visitors to engage with the festival atmosphere.

“Paint The Town Red has grown into a muchloved part of the Dark Mofo experience,” he said.

“It encourages people to get out and explore the region while capturing the creativity, colour and energy that appears across southern Tasmania during the festival.”

Participants are encouraged to share their images on Instagram using the hashtag #PTTR26 and tagging @ hobartandbeyond.

This year also includes the return of Paint Your Home Red, encouraging households to join the celebration by lighting their homes in red throughout the festival period.

Aurora Energy chief customer officer Will Barbour said the initiative gave residents another way to be part of the event.

“Paint Your Home Red is an opportunity for locals to get involved in

a campaign that brings communities together and creates a unique atmosphere across Tasmania,” he said.

Prizes are on offer from a range of local businesses and tourism operators, including accommodation, dining and experience packages.

Mr Heroys said more than 700 photos and videos were shared during last year’s competition, with more than 1,500 votes cast in the People’s Choice category.

Winners will be judged on creativity, visual impact and overall presentation.

THE City of Hobart have invited the community to have its say on the progress of the Transforming Collins Street project, now at the halfway point of its two-year trial.

The 700-metre trial that stretches from Molle Street to Murray Street has introduced temporary changes

that include bike lanes, streetside dining, new greenery, lower speed limits and pedestrianfriendly crossings.

Hobart Mayor Anna Reynolds said the project was about creating a more vibrant, people focused city.

“We’re seeing encouraging signs that these changes are supporting local

Community members can share their feedback during the engagement period from 1-14 June via the city’s website.

City officers will collect feedback directly from the public along Collins Street throughout this time.

Hello Hobart gift card to boost local spending THE Hello Hobart Gift Card has been designed to keep spending local and launches in June.

The initiative aims to deliver a meaningful boost to the local economy by encouraging residents and visitors to shop, dine and experience Hobart.

The card can be redeemed at more than 60 businesses across the Hobart Local

Government Area and includes restaurants and unique local experiences.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the gift card was a great opportunity to reach new audiences and be part of a city-wide push to support local.

“I’d urge business owners across Hobart to sign-up and be part of this program,” she said.

“Hobart is home to

an incredible mix of businesses, makers and experiences and the Hello Hobart Gift Card is a way to give back to our local business community.”

Habeo shop owner and gift card recipient Rhea Carr-Davies said it had been easy to get involved.

“Getting set up was simple and the City of Hobart team has provided great resources to help us promote our

involvement,” she said.

“We’re excited to be part of something that encourages people to support local and helps drive more spending in Hobart businesses.”

The card is available in both physical and digital formats and City of Hobart parking inspectors will be giving out $50 gift cards as a reward for positive parking behaviour.

Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds steps down Vinnies Winter Appeal launches as Tasmanians cut back on basics

HOBART Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds has announced her resignation after almost eight years in her role.

Ms Reynolds said she was proud of the council’s effort to reduce bushfire risk, secure federal funding for Hobart’s ferry terminal and progress with a visitor centre for kunanyi.

“It has been rewarding

to lead this beautiful city and being elected for two terms has been a great honour,” she said.

“But change and renewal is healthy, for me and a new generation that will lead the city.

“As mayor, I’ve worked to make the council more ambitious, innovative, modern and responsive to the community, and that shift is now visible across Hobart.”

Ms Reynolds will remain in Hobart as director of a new project that involves an alliance between the solar energy industry and mayors.

“As director of this project, I’ll be coordinating a mission to deliver 300 million solar powered homes globally by 2030,” she said.

“The initiative will

help fast growing countries boost rooftop solar, towards the levels we’ve achieved in Australia, where more than 40 per cent of homes already have it.”

When Ms Reynolds stands aside as Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor Dr Zelinda Sherlock, will take on the role until the elections in October.

AS winter approaches, the St Vincent de Paul Society is calling on Tasmanians to support the Vinnies Winter Appeal 2026.

The Society has been averaging around 21 requests for assistance per day in recent months, with 1,336 Tasmanians assisted in the month of March alone.

Society CEO Connie Digolis said financial vulnerability was widespread, with one in five Australians holding less than $100 in savings.

“Rents across Tasmania have risen sharply, around eight to 10 per cent in the past year and more than 30 per cent since 2020, placing affordable housing out of reach for many, particularly those on low or fixed incomes,” Ms Digolis said.

“Waiting lists at our Bethlehem House accommodation exceeds 150 people, with very few residents able to move on because suitable long-term housing simply isn’t becoming available.

“The people most

impacted by rising rents are often the least able to absorb the pressure. Low-income households now make up a significant portion of the rental market, leaving them exposed to ongoing housing insecurity through no fault of their own.”

A new YouGov survey commissioned by St Vincent de Paul Society found more than half of Australians (55 per cent) say they have had to reduce spending on essentials such as medication, groceries and bills just to keep a roof over their head.

The survey also found nearly three in 10 Australians (29 per cent) disagree that they have enough savings in their account to cover an emergency expense, with 17per cent (approximately 3.7 million people) strongly disagreeing.

Vinnies national president Mark Gaetani said the findings revealed just how many people were entering winter with little to fall back on.

“Winter is one of the toughest times of year for those households the Society supports,

but these figures show financial insecurity is now hitting many Tasmanians harder than ever,” he said.

“For households with little or no savings buffer, donations to the Vinnies Winter Appeal can help them to stay housed and to feel safe.”

Funds raised through the Vinnies Winter Appeal will help the Society provide practical support to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, poverty and rising cost-of-living pressures, including assistance with food, bills and other essentials needed for a decent life.

Nominations open for 2026 Tasmanian Volunteering Awards

TASMANIANS are being encouraged to shine a light on the volunteers, organisations and community groups making a difference, with nominations now open for the 2026 Tasmanian Volunteering Awards.

Organised by Volunteering Tasmania, the annual awards celebrate the individuals, groups and organisations helping to build stronger, healthier and more connected communities across the state.

Nominations will remain open until 15 July 2026, with winners

to be announced at a ceremony at Hobart Town Hall on Friday 18 September 2026.

Volunteering Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Mel Blake said the awards were an opportunity to recognise the people quietly making a significant impact in communities across Tasmania.

“Volunteers are at the heart of communities right across our state and these awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the people whose generosity, passion and

commitment make a real difference every day,” she said.

“We know every volunteer contribution matters, whether it’s supporting a local sporting club, helping vulnerable members of the community, leading a grassroots initiative or simply giving their time to make life better for others.”

Ms Blake said nominations were about sharing the stories behind the people and organisations creating change.

“Some of the most

powerful nominations come from genuine stories that bring volunteering to life,” she said.

“We encourage people to think about who has gone the extra mile, inspired others or created a lasting impact in their community. It’s often the small moments and personal stories that demonstrate just how powerful volunteering can be.”

The awards feature a range of categories recognising contributions across the volunteering industry,

from young volunteers and volunteer leaders through to inclusive volunteering and lifetime contributions.

2025 Inclusive Volunteering Award winner and Deepavali Tasmania chair Ajit Ramadas said receiving recognition through the awards had been a rewarding experience for the organisation and its volunteers.

“Being nominated and recognised gave us a real sense of connection and reminded us that the work we’re doing is making a difference in

our community,” he said.

“It was a proud moment for everyone involved because it showed us that people saw value in what we were doing and acknowledged the impact we were having.”

Ms Blake encouraged Tasmanians not to assume someone’s contribution was too small to recognise.

“People often underestimate the value of what they do, but volunteering creates stronger communities and changes lives in ways

that are not always visible,” she said.

“If someone has made a difference to you, your organisation or your community, now is the perfect time to recognise them.”

Local voices helping shape future power decisions

The TasNetworks People Panel

TASMANIA’S electricity grid connects almost every Tasmanian in some way, powering small businesses, farms and industry or keeping the lights on at home.

Since February this year, TasNetworks has invited everyday Tasmanians to help shape decisions that will guide how the business delivers services over the coming years.

TasNetworks’ People Panel, also known as a citizen’s jury, is made up of more than 40 residential customers from across the state,

bringing together Tasmanians from different backgrounds, regions and walks of life to talk through how TasNetworks balances investment and service delivery.

TasNetworks incoming Interim CEO Renée Anderson said the panel was about making sure community voices shape decisions from the beginning.

“Safe and reliable electricity is at the centre of all Tasmanians lives, and we know they want to understand how we make decisions

about service delivery and investment,” she said.

“The People’s Panel provides a direct opportunity for customers to shape the future of Tasmania’s electricity network and to seek their recommendations on how TasNetworks can deliver safe and sustainable electricity into the future.”

The panel forms part of TasNetworks’ Revenue Reset process.

Every five years the process determines how the business invests

in and manages the electricity network over the next five-year period.

While the process itself can sound technical, the discussions happening around the table are anything but!

Panellists have been sharing practical perspectives on issues that affect their everyday lives, from storm recovery and bushfire resilience to power bills, communication during outages and how new technologies like solar

panels and electric vehicles fit into the mix.

Alongside the People’s Panel, TasNetworks has also been meeting with councils, life-support customers, small businesses, large energy users, and industry across the state.

Those conversations have highlighted local priorities including regional reliability, vegetation management, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and supporting growing communities.

This process is about listening and

collaborating, with TasNetworks’ Draft Proposal, to be published by July 2027, to be directly shaped by the recommendations from the People Panel and customer and stakeholder engagement.

“The way Tasmanians use electricity is continuing to change, so creating space for these conversations now was critical,” Ms Anderson said.

“It is not possible to maximise every outcome at once, but together we create a stronger

foundation for decisionmaking for the future of Tasmania’s network.”

By the end of May, seventeen independent sessions have been held with the People Panel, and customer and stakeholder groups, including councils and industry.

Another six sessions will be held through June to help shape the Draft Proposal, set for public release next year.

Electric camper vans offer new way to explore Tasmania

A TASMANIAN tourism operator is helping drive sustainable travel with the launch of a new fleet of electric camper vans designed for off-grid adventures around the state.

TasVanLife recently unveiled the electric camper fleet, offering visitors a low-emissions way to experience Tasmania’s landscapes,

towns and attractions while enjoying the flexibility of van travel.

TasVanLife’s Paul Rawlingson said the vans had been designed and fitted out in Tasmania using local materials, including Tasmanian Celery Pine.

“The vans are fully equipped for comfort and self-sufficiency, including kitchen facilities,

pantry supplies, guide books, games and toilet facilities,” he said.

Mr Rawlingson said the vehicles were capable of supporting off-grid travel while allowing visitors to recharge during everyday activities such as shopping or exploring regional communities.

Destination Southern Tasmania chief executive Alex Heroys said the

electric camper vans would be a positive addition to the state’s tourism offering.

“This concept supports more sustainable travel while enhancing the freedom, flexibility and sense of adventure that Tasmania is known for,” he said.

“These rental camper e-vans are an entry

point, making electric vehicles more visible and familiar to potential users,” he said.

“Tasmania’s extensive public charging network makes EV touring easier than many people realise.”

Mr Rawlingson said Tasmania’s compact size and strong charging infrastructure made it well suited to electric

vehicle touring.

“Electric van hire gives visitors another way to slow down, explore beyond the major centres and experience our regions in a more considered and sustainable way,” he said.

World Bee Day shines spotlight on pollinators TASMANIANS were encouraged to celebrate the importance of bees and support local beekeepers as part of World Bee Day, held on May 20.

The annual event raised awareness of the vital role bees and other pollinators play in food production, biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Communities across Australia marked the occasion through a range of activities designed to highlight the importance of pollinators and their contribution to everyday life.

Tasmanian Beekeepers Association president Lindsay Bourke said World Bee Day was an opportunity to

recognise both bees and the people who care for them.

“Most people love honey, but not everyone realises just how much we rely on bees,” he said.

“Bees help pollinate many of the foods we enjoy every day, they support biodiversity and they play a vital role in healthy ecosystems.”

Mr Bourke said Tasmania’s beekeeping industry also supported agricultural industries and products such as Leatherwood honey.

The association encouraged Tasmanians to support bees in practical ways, including buying local honey, planting bee-friendly flowers and reducing

unnecessary pesticide use.

Mr Bourke said the day also highlighted ongoing challenges facing bees and beekeepers, including changing seasons, biosecurity risks and habitat loss.

“Tasmania remains in a fortunate position as we are still free of varroa mite, a destructive honey bee parasite now established across much of mainland Australia,” he said.

“However, that freedom cannot be taken for granted.”

The Tasmanian Beekeepers Association said even small actions could help support pollinators and protect Tasmania’s unique beekeeping environment.

2026 Autumn Photography Competition Overall Winner, Andrew Warner

Autumn Photo Festival Competition Winner DESTINATION Southern Tasmania has announced the winner of the Autumn Photo Festival Competition.

Destination Southern Tasmania CEO Alex Heroys said the competition received 1000 entries from all regions of Southern Tasmania from the Huon Valley, Derwent

Valley through the Central Highlands and the Tasman Peninsula.

“We know photographers have been travelling all around the region taking photos and staying in regional areas,” he said.

“The turning of the Fagus this year particularly has attracted thousands

into Mount Field National Park.

“The competition continues to grow yearon-year which reinforces Southern Tasmania as a leading destination for autumn and seasonal photography.”

The overall 2026 Autumn Photography finalist winner was

2026 Autumn Photography Competition Highly Commended, Katy Morgan

Andrew Warner, and highly commended photographers included Katy Morgan, Putu Ariawan, Chelsea Bell and Gary Sowter.

By Phoebe Ody – Ten Lives Volunteer Creative Team ON December 5th 2025, seven-week-old Charlie Brown came into the care of Ten Lives alongside his siblings Linus, Lucy, Peppermint Patty, Sally and Schroeder.

Like so many kittens who arrive at Ten Lives each year, the ‘Peanuts’ litter needed time in foster care until they were big enough to be desexed before making their way to the adoption rooms.

While Charlie

Brown’s journey was a relatively straightforward one, many cats and kittens who come into care require far more extensive treatment and support before they are ready to find a family of their own.

As a self-funded local animal charity, Ten Lives relies on community donations to continue being there for cats and kittens at every stage of that journey.

From foster care and veterinary treatment through to food, litter

and enrichment, every part of their care is made possible through the support of the community.

After spending time in foster care until they were big enough to be desexed, Charlie Brown and his siblings made their way to the adoption rooms on January 13th 2026.

By the very next day, they had all found their forever homes.

Stories like Charlie Brown’s are the outcome everyone at Ten Lives works towards, and a

reminder of why it is so important to be ready when cats and kittens need help.

Your support helps ensure Ten Lives is there not only for kittens like Charlie Brown and his siblings, but also for the difficult, complex and challenging cases that present every single day.

What you need to now at tax time Hank Jongen General Manager Services Australia EVERY year, tax time rolls around and it can feel a bit overwhelming.

We help millions of Australians who get a Centrelink payment, use Medicare or claim Child Support, navigate what to do.

What you need to do at tax time depends on your personal situation.

Let’s address our most common questions, so you know what to do and how to avoid some common mistakes.

Is my payment taxable?

Depending on the payment you get, they might be either: • taxable – meaning you pay tax on the amounts and must declare this income in your tax return. That includes Age Pension, JobSeeker Payment, Parental Leave Pay, the Disability Support Pension for people over 67 and some

emergency and disaster payments.

• non-taxable – meaning you don’t pay tax on the amounts but you may need to include them in your tax return. You don’t need to include Family Tax Benefit and Child Care Subsidy.

Your income information, including what payments you got, should pre-fill into your tax return by late July.

You will be able to find most of your taxable and nontaxable payments that the ATO needs to know about in your Centrelink payment summary online by mid-July.

Some taxable emergency and disaster payments won’t show on your Centrelink payment summary.

You’ll need to manually add them to your tax return.

Do you need to lodge a tax return?

Just because your payment’s taxable, that doesn’t mean you need

to lodge a tax return.

The simplest way to find out is to use the ‘Do I need to lodge?’ tool on the ATO’s website. It asks some questions and tells you what you need to do.

If you’re not required to lodge a tax return and get Family Tax Benefit or Child Care Subsidy, you need to tell Services Australia and confirm your income by using ‘Advise non lodgement of tax return’ in your Centrelink online account in myGov. If you pay or receive child support and don’t need to lodge a tax return you still need to confirm your income in your Child Support online account.

When’s the best time to lodge?

If you can, it’s best to wait until late July before lodging. This makes things much easier and helps you avoid mistakes.

Before you lodge, double-check all your details and make sure nothing’s missing.

What are the most common mistakes to avoid?

• Incorrect information: Out-ofdate bank or income details can cause problems with your return or payments.

• Lodging before pre-fill: If you don’t wait for pre-filled information, you might miss something and need to amend your return later.

• Falling for scams: Tax time is prime time for scammers. Services Australia won’t ask you to click on links or open attachments in an SMS or email. If in doubt, go to the official websites or check your secure myGov Inbox.

• Believing misinformation: Only trust information from official websites like servicesaustralia.gov. au and my.gov.au For more information visit my.gov.au/taxtime for tax time tips.

A chance to carve out new life for Hobart’s giant sequoias

The recently removed giant sequioas at St David’s Park

THE City of Hobart invites Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from artists, makers and community groups to utilise timber sourced from two giant sequoia trees.

This initiative supports creative and communityfocused projects that respectfully engage with this unique material.

The two giant sequoias fell into decline in 2025 and were removed from St David’s Park after repeated attempts to revive them failed.

For makers who prefer to work with milled wood, we have included a store of milled elm timber from a mature tree in Franklin Square that was sadly vandalised and

subsequently removed in 2005.

Successful applicants will be responsible for the collection, transport and use of the timber, as well as reporting project outcomes to the City of Hobart within one to two years.

Hadley’s Residency Prize Winner exhibits artwork in Hobart

Recipient of the Hadley Art Prize 2025, De Lamby Wulff

HADLEY’S Art Prize winner of 2025 has launched an exhibition of artwork and installations after a month-long residency.

Queensland-based artist De Lamby Wulff

was awarded the Residency Prize which includes one month’s accommodation at The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel, an art studio in the Salamanca Arts Centre and a $500

Artery voucher for art supplies.

The exhibition titled ‘House of Lamby on Show’ featured sculptures and 2D work that were created during the artist’s

residency, alongside other artworks from the past few years.

Ms Wulff said four weeks of uninterrupted freedom was a rare and meaningful gift and receiving the residency

was both humbling and affirming.

“Visitors will experience a diverse collection of artworks, beckoning to be touched and evoke discussion on the

materials and processes behind pieces,” she said.

“I encourage visitors to experience the exhibition with a sense of wonder and discovery, where the total package

is greater than the sum of its individual parts.”

The exhibition is free and will be on display until the 29 June.

Tasmania Jewels lock-in marquee player TASMANIA Jewels lock in Steph Reid as a marquee Jewel after success in Europe and Asia.

Jewels Coach Claudia Brassard said signing Reid was a significant moment for the club.

“Steph brings a level of experience that is incredibly valuable for an expansion club and she’s exactly the type of player you build around,” she said.

“She is an elite athlete and relentless point guard but what

stands out most is her resilience.

“Steph never made the state team as a junior, but she didn’t let her doubts define her and kept believing in herself to play harder.”

champion and an Australian Opal Steph said she was born a competitor who played bigger than her small stature.

“I’ve heard a lot about Tasmania punching above its weight and about the

underdog mentality which I can relate to,” she said.

THE TASMANIAN Netball League celebrated Pride Round earlier this month, with clubs, players and supporters coming together to promote inclusion, diversity and belonging across the sport.

The round highlighted the importance of creating welcoming environments for players, coaches, officials, volunteers and supporters throughout the Tasmanian netball community.

Netball Tasmania chief executive Penny Shearer said Pride Round reinforced the organisation’s commitment to ensuring everyone felt safe, respected and included in the sport.

“Netball is at its best

when every player, coach, official, volunteer and supporter feels safe, respected and able to be themselves,” she said.

“Pride Round was about visibly showing our LGBTIQA+ community that they belong in our sport and that inclusion is something we are committed to every day, not just for one weekend.”

The round marked the fourth year of partnership between Netball Tasmania and Working It Out, Tasmania’s support, education and advocacy organisation for sexuality, gender and intersex communities.

Working It Out chief executive Olivia Hogarth said inclusive sporting environments played

an important role in building connection and community wellbeing.

“We know the importance of sport for building community and a sense of belonging,” she said.

Netball Tasmania said clubs and associations across the state continued to work towards creating safe and supportive environments for people at every level of the game, from grassroots netball through to the Tasmanian Netball League.

The organisation will continue working alongside Working It Out throughout the year, with further education, training and inclusion initiatives planned in the coming months.
