Tasmanians ride 500km for mental health TWO inspiring Tasmanians have cycled 500 kilometres around the state over fourdays to raise awareness for mental health care.

Richie Porte joined this year’s challenge and rode to honour the loss of his brother, Tom, thus shining a light on the urgent need for greater mental health support in Tasmania.

Local riders rallied behind the cause and many bravely opened up about their own mental health struggles.

Winter challenge cofounder Tim Harmsen said cyclists trekked from Stanley to Hobart.

“This year’s route saw us starting at 2am from Stanley in the State’s north west before skirting the edge of Burnie and heading into the rugged and wild west coast,” he said.

“We are aiming for a grand arrival at the Mawson Place Christmas Tree in Hobart.”

COMMUNITY groups, sporting organisations, businesses and individuals are invited to apply for the second round of the Tasmanian Government’s Community Defibrillator Fund, with 90 lifesaving devices to be provided to communities across the state.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer said this round was a critical opportunity for our communities to secure an AED and help save lives.

“By increasing access to defibrillators, we can help keep hearts beating and give Tasmanians the best possible chance of survival,” Minister Archer said.

“When someone

suffers a cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR or defibrillation reduces their chance of survival by around 10 per cent.

“That’s why we’re urging community groups, businesses and sporting organisations, especially in rural and regional areas, to take up this opportunity and apply for an AED.” AEDs are easy to use, require no prior training and include audio instructions to guide the user through the process.

Once installed, each device will be registered and visible through the GoodSAM Responder app, which alerts nearby responders and provides the location of both the patient in cardiac-arrest and the closest AED.

“Earlier this year, our Government awarded 90 AEDs, and this round will deliver the remaining 90 devices committed at the 2024 State Election to further strengthen access,” Minister Archer said.

“This is particularly important in rural and remote areas where there is often a greater physical distance for our first responders to cover when responding to a cardiac arrest, compared to the major population centres.”

More than 1,100 publicly accessible AEDs are now registered across Tasmania, with 450 free devices provided to Tasmanian communities since 2014.

Applications will close on 31 January 2026.

Urban Art Wall mural celebrating Palawa women completed FROM FRONT PAGE

THE latest City of Hobart Urban Art Walls mural has been completed as a large scale artwork on Murray Street.

The mural was created by local Wiradjuri and Tongan artist Brandi Salmon and pays tribute to strong Palawa women and their enduring cultural connection to Nipaluna.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said public art helped tell a range of stories and the mural featured Palawa women and their stories.

“The Hobart community have told us that they love seeing public art around the city and they’re also interested to see more

representation of First Nations culture,” she said.

“It’s wonderful to see such a great portrait of some of Tasmania’s Palawa leaders and such an interesting artwork brightening up a city carpark.”

Mural artist Brandi Salmon said the mural honoured Palawa people as the traditional custodians of Lutruwita and acknowledged the deep, ongoing presence of Palawa culture.

“The work celebrates Palawa matriarchs and the importance of family in the passing down of culture, knowledge and strength across generations,” he said.

“It also responds to a long-held misconception that Palawa people were wiped out and this mural instead reflects survival, resistance and continuity, and recognises that Palawa culture is living and enduring.

“As a Wiradjuri woman living and working on Palawa Country, it was important to me that this work was guided by consultation and trust in community voices.”

The concept was shaped by extensive conversations between the artists and local Elders, guided by a focus on respect for Country, and the role of women in Palawa culture.

Historic Nepalese interstate tournament held at Cornelian Bay Oval ON 13 December 2025, Cornelian Bay Oval came alive with excitement as sports enthusiasts gathered to witness firstever Nepalese Interstate Tournament, hosted by the Nepalese Football Club of Tasmania (NFCT).

The event was a resounding success, featuring 12 competitive

teams and attracting a crowd of nearly 700 people for what has become an annual celebration of Nepali sports culture.

Nepalese football club of Tasmania, officially registered in 2020, is the oldest Nepalese soccer club in Hobart with more than 60 active members.

NFCT has successfully

hosted four tournaments to date, earning recognition as a key sporting event among migrant communities.

This year’s tournament was particularly special, with five teams travelling from mainland Australia for the first time.

St Georges Nepalese Club claimed the championship title,

taking home a trophy and $8000, while Launceston Nepalese Soccer Club finished as runner-up, receiving a trophy and $4,000 in prize money.

Local community leaders and members of Parliament attended as guest to witness this historical occasion.

The Honourable Josh Willie, Leader of the

Opposition, highlighted the importance of events like this for Tasmania’s economy and praised the growing Nepalese community for its contributions to the state.

A key highlight of the day was the “Come and Coach” program, co-hosted with Football Tasmania, aimed at encouraging Nepalese

children to take up soccer.

The event also featured social teams to promote physical and mental wellbeing, with NFCT’s own team securing the social category trophy.

Attendees enjoyed a vibrant atmosphere complemented by delicious Nepalese cuisine.

expressed optimism about hosting more tournaments in the future. Club Secretary Subash Khatiwada, announced plans for the next interstate event to feature two categories: Open Age and 35+ years, further expanding opportunities for participation.

Entries open for $100,000 Hadley’s Art Prize THE highly anticipated Hadley’s Art Prize has called for 2026 entries, inviting Australian artists from different career stages and backgrounds to apply.

The prize is one of the most sought-after awards in the country and offers significant recognition and exposure within the art world.

This year’s judging panel includes multidisciplinary artist Abdul Abdullah, senior curator of art museums and collections at the University of Melbourne Judith Ryan AM, and MONA curator Sarah Wallace.

Ms Wallace said the prize had become a landmark in the Australian art calendar for its encouragement of bold and unexpected approaches to landscape

and genre.

“I was honoured to have been invited to judge the Hadley’s Art Prize alongside my fellow judges,” she said.

“I look forward to seeing how artists from across the country interpret what the Australian landscape means in 2026.”

The Hadley’s Art Prize is an annual award, with the winning entry added to the permanent art collection at Hadley’s Orient Hotel, open to the public.

Entries for that year’s prize close on 27 March, with the winner announced on 31 July at the hotel.

The exhibition of finalists will be held at Hadley’s Orient Hotel from 1 to 23 August 2026.

Taste of Summer delivers another standout festival TASMANIA’S Taste of Summer Festival has drawn record crowds and delivered significant benefits to the State’s hospitality and tourism

sectors, attracting more than 98,000 people.

Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events Jane Howlett congratulated the

festival organisers for another outstanding year.

“The festival brings together outstanding local produce, diverse

culinary experiences and a strong entertainment program that includes family-friendly activities,” she said.

“With many attendees

travelling from interstate or overseas, visitors were treated to everything from fresh seafood to world class wine, beer and spirits

and dishes from around the world from over 80 stallholders.

“The organisers have been working to grow the regional spread of

producers with over 25 per cent of the stallholders hailing from outside of Hobart.”

Volunteer costs cut as new protections strengthened TASMANIANS looking to volunteer in the new year will face fewer financial barriers, with a new pilot removing fees for volunteers applying for a Registration to Work with Vulnerable People.

Volunteering Tasmania Chair Sarah Wilcox said the initiative was a significant step forward for the sector, helping remove out-of-pocket costs that can discourage people from volunteering.

“Our research shows that these costs can deter prospective volunteers,” Ms Wilcox said.

“We know volunteers already carry many expenses that volunteerinvolving organisations are not always able to reimburse.”

Ms Wilcox said the pilot was shaped by extensive consultation with the volunteering sector and thanked Volunteering Tasmania

members, partners and stakeholders who shared their experiences to help inform the advocacy.

“We’re excited to see this result and grateful to everyone who contributed their insights,” she said.

“We also want to thank the Tasmanian Government and the Minister for Community and Multicultural Affairs Madeleine Ogilvie for working with us to make this pilot a reality.”

Ms Wilcox said the start of a new year was an ideal time for people to consider volunteering.

“Many people use the new year as a chance for a fresh start or a new resolution,” she said.

“There has never been a better time to volunteer in Tasmania.”

The announcement comes as the Tasmanian Government tables the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People

Amendment Bill 2025 in Parliament, strengthening protections for children and vulnerable people.

The bill forms part of a national reform agenda agreed by the Standing Council of AttorneysGeneral in August 2025, which committed states and territories to mutual recognition of negative Working With Children Check outcomes.

Attorney-General Guy Barnett said the changes

would ensure stronger safeguards across jurisdictions.

“Tasmania is acting to deliver on our commitment through this Bill, which will strengthen our Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act,” Mr Barnett said.

“These protections will ensure that a person denied registration, or whose registration has been revoked in one jurisdiction, cannot

be granted or hold registration in another.”

Mr Barnett said the Government aimed to debate the Bill promptly to ensure the measures were in place by the end of the year.

“Practical, commonsense safeguards like this play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and protection of children and vulnerable people in our community,” he said.

COMMUNITY organisations and local councils can now apply for grant funding for events and festivals to celebrate emerging

communities.

Minister for Community and Multicultural Affairs Madeleine Ogilvie said the 2025-

26 Multicultural Community Festivals Small Grants Program had highlighted Tasmania’s diverse community as one of our

greatest strengths.

“It’s a huge part of who we are and something that deserves to be both celebrated and supported,” she said.

“We want to continue backing in our state’s rich culture by showcasing community events and festivals to bring Tasmanians

together to learn and share.”

Applicants can receive up to $5,000 in funding for their multicultural festival or event and

Minister Ogilvie said she was excited to continue fostering intercultural understanding and respect.

TasTAFE Graduate secures a career pathway, and her dreams are within reach TASTAFE graduate Isabel Parsey completed her Certificate III in Tourism in 2025 and secured her job at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary near Richmond very quickly – applying, interviewing and being offered the position in little more than a week.

“Before I started TasTAFE, I had no idea what I wanted to do.

But now I’m in a job that I love, and I have a qualification and a plan for the future. TasTAFE really helped,” Ms Parsey said.

The Certificate III in Tourism introduces learners to the core principles of the industry and is delivered at TasTAFE campuses in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.

It is one of several qualifications and short courses being offered in 2026 through Fee Free

TAFE, which removes the barrier of the cost of training for those looking to develop a career pathway or those already working and wanting to upskill.

“Having the Certificate III definitely helped me get the job. And now that I’ve started work, when visitors ask me questions, a lot of the stuff that I learned at TasTAFE comes back and I know how to speak with them,” Ms Parsey said.

“I’m in the Business and Guest Services team: I run errands into town, I help them in the gift shop, I order stock and do stocktake, I manage our firstaid supplies, I grab medications for the animals, I organise the storage areas and I also design their signs and posters for promotions, so, I’m not stuck behind

a desk all day.

“Working at Bonorong is a good balance between personal and working life, and the steady income does help with saving for future plans.

“I would like to travel, driving around Australia, living off the road.

“After that I’d like to start a small farm and do wildlife rehab. It’s a pretty big dream.”

From having no plans for her future, Isabel has grown in confidence and is now on a career pathway with a “big dream” firmly in her sights.

Proposed sale of Hobart Private Hospital CALVARY Health Care has entered into an agreement to acquire the Hobart Private Hospital from Healthscope.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer said the announcement was a positive step forward for the Hobart Private.

“With a strong history of collaboration with Calvary Health Care, this agreement intends to welcome reassurance to staff and the Tasmanian community,” she said.

“It is important that the public and private health systems work effectively to meet the health needs of all Tasmanians, and we recognize that the private health sector plays an important role for our healthcare system.

“We remain committed to working with all partners to ensure continuity of care, patient choice and sustainability of health services in public and private health systems.”

The Department of Health has continued to negotiate terms with the new operator in 2026.

THE Motor Accidents Insurance Board’s Injury Prevention and Management Foundation is continuing to play a vital role in improving road safety and injury outcomes across Tasmania, with applications now open for the next round of funding.

The Foundation supports organisations delivering practical projects that focus not only on preventing road trauma, but also on

improving how injuries are managed when accidents do occur.

Programs funded in the past have included first aid training, counselling services, injury recovery initiatives, quad bike safety education and manual handling training.

St John Ambulance Tasmania is one of the organisations currently developing a new initiative with support from the foundation.

Head of brand and community Joanne Curteis said the organisation identified a gap in how young people are supported to respond when accidents happen.

“There is a strong focus on prevention, which is what we all want, but the reality is sometimes the worst does happen,” she said.

“We wanted to create something that gives young drivers and passengers the

confidence and skills to act when it really matters.”

The program, Survive the Drive, is being co designed with schools and young people and aims to turn bystanders into responders through hands on first aid training and realistic accident scenarios.

“Simple actions, like knowing how to open an airway, can make the difference between life and death,” Ms Curteis said.

“It is about giving young people the confidence to step in.”

ParaQuad Tasmania has also benefited from foundation funding to deliver spinal cord injury prevention education across the state.

CEO Carmel Clarke said the support has allowed the organisation to share lived experience and practical information with Tasmanians, particularly young people.

“The Foundation

funding allows us to reach communities with messages that can genuinely change behaviour and save lives,” she said.

MAIB is encouraging a wide range of organisations to apply, particularly volunteer groups and community based organisations.

Applications are open until 6 March 2026, with priority areas including road safety promotion, injury prevention, improved access to

rehabilitation and innovative approaches to long term injury management.

In the 2024 to 25 financial year, MAIB provided $5.6 million in funding across Tasmania, with ten organisations supported through the Injury Prevention and Management Foundation alone.

Putting Christmas cheer on the menu A TRADITIONAL festive feast that had operated each Christmas Day in Hobart for more than 43 years once again brought the community together, with almost 600 Tasmanians attending CatholicCare Tasmania’s Community Christmas Day Lunch.

Held at In The Hanging Garden, the event provided a welcoming

space for people to share a meal, connect with others and receive support during the festive season.

CatholicCare Tasmania chief executive officer Julia Mangan said the team had spent months preparing for what became the largest luncheon to date, as demand for support continued to grow.

“Our community reach and deep experience in delivering support services unfortunately continued to show increasing demand across the board, and that was reflected in the number of people who joined us on Christmas Day,” she said.

compassion, community and connection, and it was heartening to see so many individuals and businesses come together to support the event through donations, gifts and time.”

CatholicCare Tasmania, a statewide provider of social services, said the impacts of cost-of-living pressures were evident across many

of its programs, making community initiatives like the Christmas lunch more important than ever.

The event served almost 600 lunches and distributed more than 600 gifts, hampers and vouchers to attendees.

Crowne Plaza Hobart was among the local businesses that supported the event, with staff

and corporate partners volunteering their time to wrap donated gifts.

Crowne Plaza Hobart general manager Scott Schaefer said supporting the lunch aligned closely with the hotel’s commitment to community engagement.

Taste Awards winners crowned at Taste of Summer A panel of expert judges have crowned the winners of this year’s Taste Awards.

Awards were presented to Elles Pantry for their Falafel pita, Ming Court for its

Satay chicken dish and Punch and Ladle for their Strawberry Sour.

Madame Clarke received the best sweet treat award for their cherry ripe tart, Beautiful Isle for their

Fiano Blanc and Tas Juice Press for their red currant, apple and passionfruit juice.

The judges also awarded special mentions to Tasmaniac Aquavit, and to Lapple

Wine for their Piquette.

The Awards recognise the best food and drinks on offer at the Taste across six different categories.

Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST) summer campaign promotes safety on local waterways

Marine and Safety Tasmania launch 2025 Summer Safety Campaign MARINE and Safety Tasmania (MAST) has launched its 2025 Summer Safety Campaign which has focused on four key areas - personal watercraft safety, paddling safety, boating alone and trip preparation.

MAST manager of recreational boating assets and projects Justin Foster said Tasmanians enjoy getting out on their personal watercraft and jet skis but there were important rules to ensure everyone stayed safe on the water.

“Observe speed limits and keep to five-knots in five-knot zones within 120 metres of

swimmers and divers and remember no freestyling or erratic driving within 200 metres of the shoreline,” he said.

“Paddlers also need to be aware of their abilities and the conditions because it’s very easy to go further than you intended and getting back can be so much harder.

“Know your limits and be prepared, wear your life jacket and carry the right safety equipment, take two waterproof ways to call for help and always tell someone your plans.”

Mr Foster said older boaters, particularly those who preferred to

head out alone, had remained a concern for MAST. “It’s always safer to take a mate but if you choose to go alone, make sure you do it safely by checking the weather, keeping your safety gear up to date and accessible and telling someone where you’re going and when you expect to return, wear your life jacket, and always use your kill switch,” he said.

“Always refuel before launching and follow the rule of thirds: a third to get out, a third to get back, and a third in reserve.

“Be boat wise, your safety, your responsibility.”

Services Australia touches the lives of almost every household in Australia and in the new year there’s changes to Child Care Subsidy and Medicare-supported health services.

These are the changes happening from January 2026 and what they mean for your hip pocket.

Child Care Subsidy – 3 Day Guarantee From 5 January 2026, the Child Care Subsidy activity test will be replaced, giving eligible families at least 3 days of subsided child care a week, no matter how much time they spend in recognised participation, like work or study.

This is known as the ‘3

Day Guarantee’.

If you’re already getting Child Care Subsidy, you don’t need to do anything.

Services Australia will apply the updates.

The changes help families who missed out under the activity test access early childhood education and care by giving families at least 3 days of subsidised child care a week.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children can get 100 hours of subsidised care each fortnight.

Families will still need to pay a gap fee or out of pocket cost to their child care provider, based on their Child Care Subsidy percentage. There is no change to how the rate of subsidy is worked out.

More help with dental costs for kids From January, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule will cover even more costs of going to the dentist for eligible children and their families.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a government program that can cover part or all of the cost of basic dental services for children aged 17 or under.

This can cover up to$1,158 every two years, an increase of $26 from 1 January 2026. This could be over $9,800 in coverage by the time they turn 17.

New Town aged care facility under new ownership

The Southern Cross Care aged care facility in New Town

THE Department of Health is set to purchase the Southern Cross Care site at St John’s Park in New Town.

The 3.9-hectare property at 85 Creek Road, which includes the Rosary Gardens Residential Aged Care facility, will become the location of Tasmania’s new Older Persons Mental Health Facility.

Ownership of the site is expected to transfer to the State by 30 September 2026.

The new facility will replace the Roy Fagan Centre in Lenah Valley, which currently provides inpatient mental health services for older people.

A 2021 review of the Roy Fagan Centre and the Older Persons Mental Health

Service found the existing facility to be outdated and no longer fit for purpose.

The lease for the Roy Fagan Centre is due to expire in April 2029.

The St John’s Park site forms part of a broader health precinct and will provide space for a modern, purpose-built facility designed to support older

people with mental illness and complex dementia.

The Department of Health has indicated that further consultation will take place to determine how other health services may be accommodated within the precinct in the future.

Southern Cross Care placed the site on the market as part of changes to its

operating model.

The organisation has committed to supporting all current residents of Rosary Gardens through a transition to alternative and appropriate accommodation.

Chair of Southern Cross Care, Sonya Beyers, said the agreement would allow the site to continue serving older Tasmanians.

“It is pleasing that Rosary Gardens will continue to be used to provide essential care services to older Tasmanians,” she said.

Ms Beyers also reassured residents, staff and families that Rosary Gardens would remain open and operational until 30 June, and that no resident would be left without appropriate

accommodation.

The Rosary Gardens facility includes three residential wings, internal courtyards, office space and a number of ancillary buildings. It also currently houses Southern Cross Care’s Tasmanian administrative headquarters, which will be relocated as part of the transition.

Helping Tasmanian children feel confident in the classroom

THE St Vincent de Paul Society Tasmania is calling on the community to give generously to its 2026 School Essentials Appeal, as rising back-to-school costs place increasing pressure on local families already struggling with the cost of living.

With expenses such a uniforms, shoes, backpacks, stationary arriving all at once, many Tasmanian families are being pushed to breaking point as school expenses arrive.

executive officer Connie Digolis said the School Essentials Appeal was a vital lifeline for families at one of the most financially challenging time of the year.

“Every child deserves to walk into school feeling confident, included and ready to learn,” she said.

“Too many Tasmanian children will be starting the school year without the basics because families are under enormous financial pressure.

“Our data from last year shows that as the 2025 school year began,

Vinnies Tasmania saw a sharp increase in families needing help.

“This time last year over a two month period, more than 6,300 people were assisted through emergency relief with more than one-third of households being sole parents, 91 per cent relied solely on Centrelink and around 40 per cent were living with disability.

“Parents are making impossible choices between groceries and school shoes, or paying the power bill and buying a backpack,” Ms Digolis said.

“When families come to us, they are often already stretched to the limit and back to school costs can push them into crisis.”

Many families seeking help report that school costs are the tipping point after months of rising rent, food and utility expenses.

“Through the School Essentials Appeal, Vinnies provides practical support including uniforms, shoes, backpacks, lunchboxes, stationary and assistance with school activities, helping ensure children can attend school with dignity and confidence.

“Our Members and volunteers see first-hand how much it means when a child can walk into the classroom feeling just as prepared as their peers.”

Ms Digolis said whilst Vinnies Tasmania was incredibly grateful for the generosity of donors across the community, the need for support remained high.

“Because of our supporters, hundreds of Tasmanian children have been able to start the school year prepared,” she said.

“But the cost-of-living crisis hasn’t eased and

more families continue to reach out for help.

“We still need the community’s support to ensure every Tasmanian child has the opportunity to take full advantage of their education during these formative years.”

Society southern regional president Louise Wilson said demand for assistance was already increasing as back-toschool costs begin to mount.

“Our Members work incredibly hard to create welcoming spaces where parents can access essential

back-to-school items while being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve,” she said.

“Every Tasmanian child should be able to return to school feeling prepared and confident so I urge everyone to give what they can to the appeal.

LGBTIQA+ community representatives have welcomed Tasmania’s first whole-ofgovernment LGBTIQA+ Strategy ‘Our Inclusive Island’.

The Strategy acknowledges the significant advances Tasmania has made toward LGBTIQA+

inclusion, but also how far there is still to go.

The strategy will form the basis for an LGBTIQA+ Action Plan to be released next year.

“We applaud the Tasmanian Government for its landmark LGBTIQA+ Strategy, the first of its kind in Tasmania,” Equality

Tasmania spokesperson Rodney Croome said.

Following a rise in reports of animals suffering heat illness over the last few months, RSPCA Tasmania is urging the community to never leave dogs unattended in vehicles or on the back of utes, warning that even mild weather can have deadly consequences.

Cars heat up incredibly fast. On a day that feels comfortable to us — around 22°C — the temperature inside a parked car can reach as high as 47°C within an hour. Dogs can suffer fatal heatstroke in as little as six minutes.

Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting.

When the surrounding air is too hot, this cooling mechanism fails, causing their internal body temperature to rise rapidly. Once a dog’s temperature exceeds 41°C, they are at serious risk of heatstroke — a life-threatening emergency that only around 50 per cent of dogs survive.

Parking in the shade, leaving windows down, tinting windows or leaving water inside the vehicle do not significantly reduce the risk of heat related illnesses and can create a false sense of security.

Dogs are also at significant risk when transported on the back of utes. Metal trays can become extremely hot in the sun, causing severe burns to paws and bodies, as well as heat stress and dehydration.

In Tasmania, it is illegal to transport a dog on a metal ute tray at or above 28°C without insulating material to protect them from the hot surface. Dogs on utes must also have access to adequate ventilated shade and water at all times. Failing to meet these requirements is an offence and can result in fines and penalties under Tasmanian dog regulations.

Some dogs are particularly vulnerable to heat stress, including flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds such as bulldogs and boxers, overweight dogs, puppies, senior dogs, and those with existing medical conditions. However, any dog can suffer heatstroke, regardless of breed or size.

Signs of Heatstroke in Animals Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Warning signs may include: • Excessive panting or drooling • Lethargy or weakness • Unsteadiness, shaking or collapse • Rapid breathing If you suspect heatstroke, seek urgent veterinary care.

While waiting for help, move the animal to a cool area and gently apply cool (not ice-cold) water to the belly and armpits, followed by fanning. Do not use ice, as this can worsen the condition.

What To Do If You See a Dog in a Hot Car 1. Note the vehicle’s registration, make and location 2. Call Tasmania Police on 131 444 immediately* 3. Stay nearby until help arrives *Police have the authority to intervene if an animal is at risk.

Heat Affects More Than Just Dogs While dogs are most commonly reported, other animals are also highly vulnerable to heat, including cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and other small pets. Many of these animals are unable to regulate their body temperature effectively and can suffer heatstroke even at relatively moderate temperatures.

RSPCA Tasmania’s advice is simple Leave animals at home whenever possible, in a ventilated cool, shaded environment with plenty of fresh water.

Losing a beloved companion in such preventable circumstances would be devastating.

New era for Ten Lives Kittens and a Ten Lives worker in the new upgraded Ten Lives Cat Centre

MUCH needed upgrades at the Ten Lives Cat Centre are now complete.

We have introduced a new adoption suite, an X-ray machine and upgraded hospital facilities, all of which benefit the cats and kittens in our care, the staff and volunteers who work here every day, and the wonderful people who visit us.

These changes are the result of much planning and patience, and we’re incredibly grateful to our generous supporters who made it all possible.

We are committed to showing that when the community supports Ten Lives, we put that support where it counts.

Our new adoption area is much larger and more comfortable, providing a better space for the kittens, cats and the

community members looking to adopt them.

Since opening the new space, the response from the community (and the kitties) has been nothing but praise.

The new X-ray facilities are particularly exciting, as we’ve never had the capacity to do X-rays onsite before.

“This is a first for the Ten Lives Cat Centre,” Ten Lives president Paula Wreidt said.

“We are excited, and we are very grateful to everyone who has been on this journey with us. It really does herald a new era for the Ten Lives Cat Centre moving forward.”

Most cats dislike travelling in vehicles, so being able to conduct X-rays on-site means quicker treatment and a less stressful experience for them.

“The X-ray machine opens opportunities for future initiatives, including partnership with the local government to do community cat management programs,” Ten Lives CEO Noel Hunt said.

On top of that, our vet team have found the X-ray machine to be invaluable with helping them diagnose certain issues so they can provide the absolute best care in the most efficient way.

All of this has been a long time coming, but we’ve worked hard to make sure it’s done right.

The new adoption area coincides with better, bigger hospital facilities, improving the efficiency of the hospital, reducing noise and movement, and creating a smoother, calmer environment for cats in our care. Again,

none of this would have been possible without your support!

“It’s fantastic,” Mr Hunt said.

“The team are really thrilled. They work extremely hard in a very challenging environment; there’s so many cats and kittens coming into our care all the time.”

“We don’t know today whether we’ll get 10 or 30 cats and kittens coming in.”

“The team here, with the support of the community, are getting the job done and doing the heavy lifting looking after the cats and kittens, making a big difference for the community, making a big difference for the environment.”

At this time of year, we usually have around 200 cats and kittens in our care.

While these upgrades enable us to look after more animals, our fantastic network of foster carers remains as essential as ever, especially during kitten season.

“If there’s anyone thinking they’d like to be a foster carer, we provide training, we provide all the materials that they need, and it can be just as fulfilling as owning a cat,” Ms Wreidt said.

Racing returns for Summer Patrons, trainers and Tasracing representatives attend the 2025-26 Ladbrokes Summer Racing Festival launch

TASMANIAN jockey Craig Newitt will be chasing an incredible 10th win in the Devonport Cup when the race is run on Wednesday 7 January 2026.

Newitt, who will spend more time in Tasmania over the coming months, said he always looked forward to returning home.

“I have always been taught never to forget where you come from.

I love coming back to Tassie, so for the next few months I will be back and forth a bit,” he said.

Newitt won the last two Devonport Cups on

the Glenn Stevensontrained Ashy Boy, his first Devonport Cup win was in 2002.

Newitt said the Devonport Cup was a race he targeted well in advance each year.

“Like any sporting person, you want to win your hometown Cup or Grand Final.

It is basically the one race of the year when I start looking for a horse months in advance,” he said.

“I have a couple in the pipeline for this year, so hopefully we can land the right one.”

He has enjoyed an amazing career to date and is approaching 2500

career wins and has amassed 33 Group 1 victories.

The Devonport Cup, including being one of the north west coast’s premium social occasions, is one of the key events in the Ladbrokes Summer Racing Festival.

The festival officially started in Launceston on 21 November when the Barry Campbelltrained Durazzo won the $150,000 Listed Tasmanian Newmarket Handicap.

It will end in Hobart on 28 February when the Group 1 Ladbrokes Tasmania Cup is run for the harness code.

In between these race days, the festival will include the Hobart and Launceston Cups for thoroughbreds (worth $250,000 each), The Chase, the Group 1 Ladbrokes Hobart Thousand and the Ladbrokes Launceston Cup for greyhounds and The Golden Apple and the Hobart and Devonport Cups for harness.

Tasracing chief executive officer Andrew Jenkins said all parts of the state would feature in the festival.

“It is clearly very important that we position ourselves as a

statewide industry to the national market,” he said.

“There will obviously be group race days in our cities, but also Country Cup days at Longford, St Marys, Scottsdale and Burnie.

“More than 10,000 people attend those country race days alone in last year’s festival.

“It is equally important to highlight Tasmania as a racing destination and promote the entertainment aspect of the race days.”

Entain Australia CEO Andrew Vouris said Ladbrokes was a proud racing-first brand.

“We love the sport and we believe in its participants,” he said.

“Our investment in Tasmanian racing is not just about putting our name on a race. It is about helping build a product that engages punters, supports participants and showcases the very best of Tasmanian racing.

“We are all looking forward to a fantastic festival of racing and feel privileged to play a small part in it.

“It is a great time of year to be racing, and we wish the very best of luck to everyone involved.”

The festival also

incorporates the harness yearling sale on 14 February and the Magic Millions yearling sale on 23 February. Both sales will be held at Quercus Park at Carrick.

Just under $80,000 will be given to local sporting and community clubs as part of the Ladbrokes Community Sports Series.

Clubs are invited to enter a draw to be selected to have a horse running in their name in each of the thoroughbred cups.

More than 150 clubs have already registered their interest.

Cricket locked in for Mac Point Stadium THE future of cricket at Macquarie Point Stadium has been secured with the Tasmanian Government and Cricket Tasmania signing a new Heads of Agreement.

“Our new multipurpose Macquarie Point Stadium will be the home of Tasmanian cricket,” Tasmanian premier Jeremy Rockliff said.

“We have reached a vitally important milestone and I want to acknowledge the hard work of everyone around the table to reach this point.

“This second Heads

of Agreement will see the transition of Cricket Tasmania and Australian content from Ninja Stadium to Mac Point.

“It locks in support for the planned Community and Cricket Academy at Seven Mile Beach in what will be a brilliant community and grassroots pathway facility for all Tasmanians.

Premier Rockliff said this agreement would also provide a facility to grow pitches for Mac Point.

“We have worked closely with Cricket Tasmania on its concerns

regarding Mac Poin, and I’m pleased to announce we have reached a shared agreement on the roof design.

“The signing of this second Agreement is a testament to that collaboration.”

This second Agreement sees the Government and Cricket Tasmania commit to the transition of elite-level cricket from Ninja Stadium to the new Macquarie Point Stadium, to support the establishment of drop-in pitches required for the operation of the new Stadium and to

further foster and grow participation in and engagement with cricket in Tasmania.

“We have seen strong increases in participation in basketball and AFL among our young people, and it is my hope that this announcement today will have generations of Tassie kids dreaming of putting on the baggy green or playing for Tasmania,” Premier Rockliff said.

“We’re ready to get on with the job, to reap the rewards that this landmark project will bring and to deliver for Tasmanians.”

THE Hobart Hurricanes have secured their maiden Women’s Big Bash League title with a commanding eight wicket win over the Perth Scorchers.

An unbeaten 77 from 44 balls by opener

Lizelle Lee proved the difference, as Hobart chased down Perth’s total of 5 for 137 with 30 balls to spare in front of a jubilant home crowd.

Perth opener Beth Mooney looked set early, scoring 33 from

26 balls, but was dropped three times in the powerplay before being bowled by Heather Graham in the 11th over.

Graham also removed Scorchers captain Sophie Devine later in the innings, finishing

with figures of 2 for 26.

Devine, who was dropped on 27, found some rhythm late with two sixes before being stumped in the 17th over.

English spinner Linsey Smith delivered a crucial contribution,

taking 2 for 4 from two economical overs.

In reply, Lee set the tone immediately, striking three boundaries in the opening over. She went on to produce a dominant innings, finishing with 10

fours and four sixes in the highest score ever recorded in a WBBL final.

Lee shared a decisive 77 run partnership with Nat Sciver Brunt, who added 35 from 27 balls, to put the result beyond doubt.

The victory marks the Hurricanes’ first WBBL title in the competition’s 11 year history and follows the club’s men’s side breaking through for their maiden Big Bash League crown last season.

Tasmanian Netball League season dates announced NETBALL Tasmania has released the 2026 Tasmanian Netball League fixture, kicking off the season on 21 and 22 February.

The 2026 fixture comprises 21 rounds.

Teams will travel across the state to compete in Ulverstone, Launceston and Hobart.

Veteran player Shelby Miller (who does she play for?) said her team’s goal was to maintain a positive training environment.

“The goal is to gel early as a team on and off the court and of course play in the grand final,” she said.

Throughout the season, the league will break for the National Netball Championships in April, the SN Reserves and the Play-In Tournament in June.

The 2026 season has seen the introduction of two additional double header rounds, alongside hosting the Opening Round again.

The two-day opener will be held at Kingsborough Sports Centre and host seven clubs to compete across 12 matches in the U19 and Opens competitions.

South East Suns U19 head coach Mia Bourke said relationship building was a priority.

“Firstly, relationships and connection, culture and trust within a team is important to me, so building those relationships off the court will have a large

impact on the court,” she said.

“We are very fortunate to have the 10 girls we do, because they are all great.

“We also know we must keep working on our skill and fitness, and that will be ongoing, as it is for all teams.”

Later in the season, the Silverdome will host a double header on 23 and 24 May and the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre will host another on 27 and 28 June.
