New reef platform opens the black box on marine protected area performance A MAJOR upgrade to the immersive Reef Life Explorer platform is being launched today.

It is giving marine managers, scientists and the public an unprecedented window into the health of reefs inside marine protected areas (MPAs), allowing users to explore decades of ecological change across protected reefs in Australia and worldwide.

The upgrade brings together one of the world’s largest collections of independent underwater reef monitoring data into a single interactive tool.

It was developed by researchers from the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS),

working with Parks Australia and Reef Life Survey.

For the first time, users can directly compare ecological trends inside and outside protected areas using a standardised approach, revealing how reef ecosystems respond to protection over time.

The release comes at a critical moment for global ocean conservation.

Nations, including Australia, have committed to protecting 30 per cent of the world’s oceans by 2030 under the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Yet understanding whether those protections are delivering real biodiversity outcomes remains a major challenge.

“Shallow reefs worldwide

are under increasing pressure from fishing, ocean warming, harmful algal blooms and other human impacts,” IMAS researcher Ella Clausius said.

“Marine protected areas are one of our most important tools for conserving marine life, but we can’t manage what we can’t measure.

“Long-term monitoring is essential for understanding how ecosystems are changing underwater and identifying which management approaches are delivering the greatest benefits for biodiversity, so we can continually improve the effectiveness of marine conservation over time.”

A NEW shop showcasing handmade gifts and homewares created by young Tasmanians has opened in Hobart’s Elizabeth Street Mall.

Troublesmiths, a social enterprise run by Workskills Tasmania, has transformed the previously vacant City of Hobart mall booth into a retail space featuring ethical and sustainable products while providing training and employment opportunities

for young people.

The enterprise supports people aged 15 to 24 who may face barriers to employment, helping them develop practical retail, customer service and workplace skills.

Troublesmiths Youth Training Lead Megan Denne said the new location was about much more than simply opening another shop.

“Moving into the Mall Booth has been much more

than just finding a new retail space,” she said.

“As a social enterprise, every product we sell helps create meaningful employment pathways and real-world learning opportunities for young Tasmanians.

“Being in the heart of Hobart gives our young people the chance to build confidence, develop retail and customer service skills, and connect with people from all walks of life.”

Ms Denne said the store also gave shoppers the opportunity to meet the young people behind the products.

“It creates opportunities for our community to stop, have a conversation and get to know local young people,” she said.

“Young people are often defined by stereotypes, but when you take the time to chat and hear someone’s story, you realise that we’re all just people living in Hobart together.

“Our vision for the Troublesmiths Mall Booth is for it to be a place where jobs, community and connection come together.”

Revenue from sales is reinvested into programs that provide training, skill development and pathways to employment for young Tasmanians.

Hobart Mayor Anna Reynolds welcomed the new business to the city centre.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Troublesmiths to the Elizabeth Street Mall,” she said.

“This new space brings fresh energy to the heart of our city while creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, build confidence and gain workplace experience.”

Alistair Scott wins prestigious Tasmanian history award THE City of Hobart has voted to provide in-principle support for the possible return of a section of the Queens Domain to Tasmania’s Aboriginal community, marking what could become the state’s first Aboriginal land handback in more than two decades.

The decision supports further investigation into transferring approximately 4.9 hectares of land to the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania (ALCT), with the long-term vision of establishing an Aboriginal-owned and operated cultural centre.

The vote does not approve a land transfer.

Instead, it allows council officers to begin detailed investigations, including community consultation, planning and statutory processes.

Any future transfer would require a separate decision by the council.

Hobart Mayor Anna Reynolds said this decision was a significant milestone for Hobart and Tasmania.

“Today’s decision is the first step in returning land to the Aboriginal community to allow for the recognition and celebration of Tasmania’s Aboriginal culture and connection to Country in the heart of an Australian capital city,” she said.

“This is a nationally and locally significant indication of Council’s support for a land handback – the first in Tasmania for two decades.

“There is still substantial work ahead and any future land transfer would require a separate Council decision, but today’s outcome reflects a willingness to genuinely explore an opportunity of historic significance for our city and state.”

Community consultation will form part of the next stage of the process before any final decision on the proposed land transfer is made.

Free tree giveaway to grow Hobart’s canopy

HOBART residents, schools, community groups and businesses are being encouraged to help green the city through a new initiative offering more than 150 free advanced trees.

The City of Hobart’s Great Tree Giveaway aims to boost tree canopy on private land, with $20,000 worth of trees available until Friday 24 August.

The initiative follows a 2023 report which found Hobart lost almost 55 hectares of tree canopy on private urban land between 2017 and 2022.

Hobart Mayor Anna Reynolds said increasing tree cover on private land would play an important role in achieving the city’s target of 40 per cent urban canopy cover by 2046.

“We’re giving away more than 150 trees to homes across Hobart to supercharge private tree canopy cover across our urban areas,” she said.

“The mix includes native trees, ornamentals and even

“We are planting trees in our streets and parks, but we won’t be able to reach our canopy target alone.

Hobart Legacy calls on a new generation of volunteers HOBART Legacy is calling on a new generation of Tasmanians to help continue more than 100 years of supporting the families of veterans.

With more than half of Hobart Legacy’s volunteers now aged over 75, the organisation is encouraging people of all ages, particularly younger members of the community

to step forward and help ensure its vital work continues well into the future.

Hobart Legacy currently supports around 400 beneficiaries across Southern Tasmania, including widows, widowers, children and families of veterans, providing practical assistance, social

connection and advocacy following the injury or death of a loved one through military service.

Hobart Legacy President David Waddle OAM said while the organisation’s mission had remained unchanged for more than a century, its future depended on attracting new volunteers.

“Our volunteers have

dedicated countless hours to supporting veterans’ families, but many of them are now reaching an age where it’s becoming harder to continue,” he said.

“We’re looking for people who want to make a genuine difference in their community.

“You don’t need a military background, just compassion, a willingness

to help and a little of your time.”

Mr Waddle said volunteers played an important role in helping Legacy fulfil the promise made more than a century ago to care for the families of those who served.

“Legacy was built on the simple promise to look after the families left behind.

That promise is just as

important today as it was in 1923,” he said.

“Whether it’s visiting a beneficiary, helping with fundraising, making phone calls or lending a hand at community events, every volunteer helps ensure veterans’ families continue receiving the support they deserve.”

Hobart Legacy offers two volunteer pathways.

Legatees work directly with beneficiaries, while Friends of Hobart Legacy support fundraising activities and community events. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to contact Hobart Legacy to learn more about the opportunities available at admin@legacyhobart. com.au

program gives participants opportunities to develop advocacy skills, contribute to national discussions and champion the rights of children and young people.

UNICEF Australia chief executive Tony Stuart said the program was built on ensuring young people were part of the conversation.

“Young Australians are their own best advocates simply by sharing their perspectives and life

experiences,” he said.

“Our role is to give them the tools and avenues to be heard, and we’re proud to be able to deliver this program with the support of our partner IKEA Australia.”

Since launching in 2014, the Young Ambassador program has supported participants to advocate on issues including digital safety, climate change and the wellbeing of young Australians.

Council backs first step towards Aboriginal land handback

More outdoor dining to enliven Hobart streets MORE outdoor dining spaces are set to appear across Hobart under a new City of Hobart program designed to support local businesses while creating more welcoming and vibrant streets.

The Parklet and Street-Side Dining Program transforms selected on-street parking spaces into attractive outdoor seating areas, giving businesses the opportunity to expand their dining areas and encouraging people to spend more time in the city.

Among the first businesses to take part is Liverpool Street restaurant Scholé, where owner Luke Burgess said the additional outdoor space would make a real difference.

“We’ve always wanted people to be able to sit and linger out the front, but there’s only so much you can do with a narrow footpath,” he said.

“This program was the first real chance to change that. It gives us something we’ve never had, and for a small business, a few extra tables that people actually want to sit at makes a real difference.”

Mr Burgess said street-side dining was about more than creating extra seats.

“Some of the best things about running Scholé happen out the front. Someone pausing for a chat on their way past, regulars running into each other,” he said.

“Street-side dining gives us more room for that to happen. Hobart has always been a city people walk around, and anything that gives them a reason to slow down and stay a while is worth doing.”

Hobart Mayor Anna Reynolds said the program would help create more peoplefocused streets while supporting local businesses.

“This program creates more vibrant, people-focused streets by turning small sections of road space into places where residents and visitors can sit, meet and enjoy everything our city has to offer,” she said.

“Parklets and street-side dining give businesses an opportunity to trial new ideas while delivering lasting benefits for the wider community through improved amenity, accessibility and activation.”

Businesses and community groups interested in participating can apply through the City of Hobart’s Parklet and Street-Side Dining Program.

Antarctica comes alive on Hobart waterfront this August

THE Australian Antarctic Festival will return to Hobart’s waterfront from 20–23 August 2026, celebrating Australia’s unique connection to Antarctica through science, exploration, heritage and familyfriendly experiences.

Hosted by the Mawson’s Huts Foundation, the free

four-day festival will feature Antarctic technology and equipment, educational activities, live talks, virtual reality experiences and opportunities to engage directly with the people behind Australia’s Antarctic program.

executive officer Lara Colrain said the festival continued to grow alongside Hobart’s international reputation as an Antarctic Gateway city.

“Many people are curious about what happens when Antarctic expeditioners disappear over the southern horizon each summer,”

she said.

“The Australian Antarctic Festival gives the public the opportunity to step inside that world and experience the stories, science and heritage that connect Tasmania so closely to Antarctica.

“From the heroic era of Douglas Mawson through to modern

Antarctic science and climate research, the festival celebrates the people and organisations shaping Australia’s ongoing presence in Antarctica.”

Ms Colrain said the festival also highlighted Hobart’s globally significant role within the Antarctic sector.

“Hobart is one of

only five internationally recognised Antarctic Gateway cities and is home to one of the world’s leading Antarctic research and logistics networks,” she said.

“The festival is an opportunity to celebrate that connection with both the local community and visitors from interstate and

A city with people in mind IN 2009, the City of Hobart commenced an important conversation about what sort of city we wanted.

Renowned Dane and urban visionary Jan Gehl was invited to Hobart, and his firm, Gehl Architects, was engaged to investigate how the waterfront and CBD could be improved to make it more people-friendly and appealing.

The university was engaged to map how people and cars moved between the waterfront and the city, identifying the barriers and opportunities to improve our public spaces.

Looking at it now, it’s hard to believe that Hobart’s waterfront was once an unattractive precinct clogged with traffic and parked cars, offering little space to linger, enjoy views of the river, watch the harbor, or stroll along the water’s edge.

Today, there is much more pedestrian priority on Morrison and Brooke Streets, while Franklin Wharf and the PW1 forecourt are no longer car parks.

The pedestrianisation of these areas is now complete and the transformation has been remarkable, it is now a slower, safer and more

relaxed precinct that better serves locals and visitors alike.

Moving through the city up Elizabeth Street, it was once obvious that the area was uninviting, with little outdoor seating.

As the main thoroughfare to North Hobart, it sees some of our highest pedestrian traffic, but it needed activation to support local food, beverage, and small bar businesses.

Minimal parking was removed to accommodate alfresco dining, creating a vibrant little precinct that is clearly working.

Other key projects include the new bridge over the Brooker Highway at Bathurst Street, the Bridge of Remembrance over the Tasman Highway, development of the Mathers House precinct and city laneways, and additional bike lanes on Argyle, Campbell and Collins Streets.

During this period, numerous important university developments also took place, including the Medical Science precinct with Menzies buildings 1 and 2, the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, the Hedberg for performing arts attached to the Theatre

Royal and the latest university building, The Forest.

All of these city-shaping projects have been vital milestones in creating a city that puts people first, encouraging walking,

cycling and local trade while recognising the need for car access and parking.

Cities are dynamic and change is constant.

Hobart is no different.

When asked what they

want in a city, people commonly answer: clean, safe, people-friendly and easy to get around.

Councils everywhere work to balance a variety of needs and services within limited

budgets, striving to create welcoming spaces and streets that encourage people to stay longer.

A great deal of thought and engagement goes into this work and perfection is a

moving target. But one thing is clear: Hobart is a much more inviting place today, and significantly easier to get around on foot or bike.

Sandy Bay playground raises bar for inclusive play MORE kids can now enjoy the beautiful Long Beach Reserve playground at Sandy Bay with the installation of accessible play equipment and a ‘chat board’, which raises the bar in accessibility, making sure this playground can be enjoyed by all children.

Under a project fully

funded by the City of Hobart, Long Beach Reserve Playground is now home to a Smooth Ship Glider, with plenty of space for a person in a wheelchair and their mates, a carousel that accommodates a wheelchair, and a 5-way swing that brings together kids of all abilities.

It also has a ‘chat board’,

designed in Tasmania and inspired by current Hobart Children’s Mayor Noah Dobson, who wants to introduce chat boards into every playground in Hobart to help people who rely on non-verbal communication to chat and connect with others.

Noah’s passion for building inclusive playgrounds is driven by his love for his two younger brothers, Caleb, eight, and Riley, six. Both use tools with symbols like ‘hungry’, ‘home’ and ‘swing’ to help them communicate.

The chat board was designed by Variety Tasmania and incorporates visual symbols, Braille and essential signs.

The $300 000 playground upgrade includes new soft fall rubber surfaces, scramble boulders and tree plantings.

Hobart Mayor Anna Reynolds said accessible

playgrounds should become the norm, not the exception.

“We need to be much, much better at making our playgrounds accessible and fun for all Tasmanian kids,” she said.

“In 2022 more than 170 000 Tasmanians reported having a disability, almost a third of the population.

“Variety Tasmania is committed to increasing accessibility in playgrounds across the state and we’ve seen firsthand how communication chat boards like these can markedly improve engagement between children of all abilities,” Variety Tasmania CEO Mohammad Aldergham said.

“For children who use augmented or other forms of non-verbal communication, a playground can sometimes feel isolating. Chat boards help break down those

barriers by giving children a simple way to express themselves, connect with others and join in play.

“We’ve seen these boards spark conversations, create friendships and build understanding between children who may communicate in different ways.”

Hobart Children’s Mayor Noah Dobson said Long Beach Reserve playground was a perfect example of how inclusive playgrounds around the world should be.

“This new upgrade has made the park way more inclusive, and has let my brothers, Caleb and Riley, have more fun, while connecting with people safely,” he said.

“This amazingly accessible playground should hopefully be the first of lots more inclusive areas in our community.”

This event is a showcase of Tasmanian Jazz talent with a mix of new and seasoned performers. The festival has proven to be a starting point for many young musicians.

It gives them the opportunity to perform professionally in front of an audience while also having the chance to see the experienced players do their thing.

The Hobart City Council has been a major supporter of the event since 2007.

More than 60 bands with roughly 200 musicians performing in 10 venues all within easy walking distance.

This year’s venues run along Elizabeth Street and up Burnett Street in the North Hobart CBD. The event has proven to be a favourite of the musicians as they get to see other musicians perform as well as be a performer themselves and of course the punters love the chance to see so many of their favourite bands/ musicians for free while enjoying some of Tassie’s best beverages and cuisine.

The festival promises to deliver something for all jazz tastes with jazz genres from traditional and mainstream through to blues, funk and modern.

This is a FREE event, there is no cover charge but we encourage patrons to support the businesses by purchasing food and drink where available.

Vinnies hosts annual Homelessness Week Breakfast

The St Vincent de Paul Society Homelessness Week Breakfast event on Queens Domain

THE St Vincent de Paul Society recently hosted its annual Homelessness Week breakfast on the Queens Domain.

“In the past 12-months, the Society has helped 17,315 individuals with our Emergency Relief service and provided food and assisted 26,724 individuals through our Van services,” St Vincent de Paul Society Chief Executive Officer Connie Digolis said.

“Concerningly, 12 per cent of the 8,033 requests for assistance during the year came from people new to the Society, which is an average of 78 new clients per month.

“Currently there are more than 5,500 Tasmanians on the waiting list for public housing and, with long waiting times due to lack of supply of appropriate accommodation, this number continues to grow.

“We have the longest wait list we have ever seen at Bethlehem House with consistent and ongoing demand for our homelessness services.

“While we do our best to respond to people who need short term housing, we continue to work with the entire sector, including Government to find longer term solutions.”

2024/25 data from Shelter

Tas showed one in 91 Tasmanians have received homelessness assistance, higher than the national rate of one in 94.

Further, 22 per cent of people experiencing homelessness are aged between 12 and 24 years and a further 14 per cent are under 12 years.

Each year the St Vincent de Paul Society marks Homelessness Week with events across Tasmania and this year they were attended by Tasmanianbased National President of the Society, Mark Gaetani, who is calling for more Government action.

“Our experience and

research reveals that too many people are just one life event away from housing stress, losing a job, falling ill, ending a relationship or experiencing family and domestic violence. All these pathways cost the state more money to remedy,” Mr Gaetani said.

“It is shameful that a single person on JobSeeker cannot afford to rent anywhere in Australia. This is the reality behind the numbers, and it demands urgent national action.

“The Society provides a range of housing and accommodation services in every state and territory, which may include short-

term crisis accommodation, transitional housing, medium to longer-term community housing, accessible housing for people living with disability and homelessness services.

“This National Homelessness Week, we are asking the Government to match its rhetoric with resources.

“Australians overwhelmingly believe everyone deserves a decent life. Treating housing as a human right and funding the services and stock to make that right real, is where action must begin.”

New arrivals area opens as airport upgrade reaches major milestone PASSENGERS travelling through Hobart Airport will now experience a new arrivals area featuring a large U-belt baggage carousel and a Tasmanian-designed outdoor forecourt.

Hobart Airport Chief executive officer Norris Carter said the opening of the area marked a significant milestone in the $200-million terminal expansion project, which was now around two-thirds complete.

Over the coming months, travellers will continue to see new areas open as work progresses toward a terminal that is double its previous size.

“The project will ultimately double the size of the terminal, providing more space, more choice of food and retail, and more jobs for Tasmanians,” Mr Carter said.

“The opening of our new arrivals area is an exciting moment for Tasmania as the terminal expands to meet growing demand.

“It features more baggage claim space, a new arrivals exit with easier access to the new car rental offices, and a welcoming outdoor forecourt inspired by Tasmania’s unique landscape.

“As part of the works,

one existing baggage carousel has been taken offline to be upgraded and expanded, while the new 85 metre U-belt carousel is designed to improve flow and support increased passenger numbers.”

Mr Carter said the expanded arrivals area added roughly 800 square metres of space, providing additional capacity to support growing passenger numbers.

The outdoor forecourt has been designed by Tasmanian landscape architects Playstreet and draws inspiration from Tasmania’s natural environment to create a distinctly local welcome for visitors arriving in the state.

Playstreet Director Miriam Shevland said the forecourt was designed as a welcoming journey through Tasmania’s landscapes, using a Tasmanian native planting palette to create a distinct sense of place.

“The design is intended to reflect Tasmania’s rugged coastlines and natural environments, and create a calm, inviting arrival experience that connects visitors to Tasmania from the moment they land.”

Census countdown begins HOUSEHOLDS across Hobart are being reminded to take part in the 2026 Census, with Census night set for Tuesday 11 August.

Instructions from the Australian Bureau of Statistics are being distributed from late July, with most households encouraged to complete their Census online.

Paper forms will also be available for those who need them.

The Census collects information about Australia’s population, helping governments plan services and infrastructure including schools, hospitals, transport, parks and

community facilities.

An accurate Census helped ensure Hobart’s future needs are properly understood.

“The Census results valuable information about the people who live in Hobart, from the number of families and older residents to housing, transport and languages throughout the community.

Residents can complete their Census as soon as they receive their instructions if they already know where they will be staying on Census night.

Participation in the Census is compulsory.

COMMUNITY sporting clubs are being invited to secure their grounds for the 2026-27 summer season, with the City of Hobart opening Expressions of Interest for the allocation of its sportsgrounds.

Applications opened on 3 August and close on 31 August, with successful applicants to receive seasonal permits ahead of the summer season beginning on 1 October.

For the first time, clubs will submit their applications through the City’s new online booking platform, Bookable, which has been introduced to streamline the booking process.

To apply, clubs must first register an account

through Bookable before lodging an Expression of Interest.

The City of Hobart is also offering free support sessions to help clubs register and navigate the new system. Staff will be available at the Elizabeth Street Conference Room, 7 Elizabeth Street, from 4pm to 7pm on Monday, 3 August and Thursday, 6 August.

Clubs unable to attend can also receive assistance by phone, Microsoft Teams or in person.

Now is the time to prepare for Tasmania’s Spring selling season IT might seem strange to talk about spring while we are still pulling on coats and scraping frost off windscreens, but if you are thinking about selling your home this year, the middle of winter is exactly the right moment to start preparing.

The vendors who achieve the strongest results in September, October and November are almost always the ones who began their homework in July and August.

The spring and summer selling season remains the busiest period on the Tasmanian property calendar and this year it arrives against a backdrop of genuine market strength.

The Institute’s March quarter figures recorded 2,990 transactions worth $1.925 billion across the state, with record medians for both houses at $676,250 and units at $550,000.

Investor numbers reached their highest level since 2003 and mainland buyers more than doubled year on year.

Buyers are active, they are motivated and many of them are looking at Tasmania from interstate with fresh eyes.

That level of demand is good news for sellers, but it does not mean preparation can be skipped.

If anything, a busy market raises the bar.

When buyers have choice, presentation and pricing decide which homes attract competition and which

ones sit.

So here is my advice, drawn from decades of collective experience across our member agencies on how to get ready.

Start with the honest walk through.

Before you call an agent, walk through your home as a stranger would.

Note the sticking door, the cracked tile, the garden bed that got away from you over winter.

Small maintenance jobs are cheap to fix now and expensive to ignore later, because buyers mentally deduct far more than the repair cost when they spot a defect.

A weekend with a paintbrush and a skip bin is often the best investment a vendor makes all year.

Let the light in.

Tasmanian homes are

judged on warmth and light more than almost anything else.

Clean the windows, trim back anything blocking them, and make sure heating is serviced and working for those early spring open homes when a cold house can undo everything else you have done.

By the time summer inspections roll around, outdoor areas take over as the hero, so give decks, lawns and entertaining spaces attention now while trades and landscapers still have availability.

Choose your agent on substance, not promises.

Interview more than one.

Ask for recent, comparable sales evidence, not just an appealing appraisal figure. A responsible agent will show you the

data behind their price guidance and explain their marketing strategy in plain terms.

Any REIT member agency is bound by our standards of professional conduct, and I encourage vendors to look for that membership.

It exists to protect you.

Price for the market you are in, not the one you wish for.

Strong conditions tempt some vendors to test the ceiling.

The evidence is consistent: homes priced accurately from day one attract more inspections, more competition andbetter final results than homes that launch high and drift down.

Buyers in 2026 are informed.

They research comparable sales before they ever step through

your door, and an overpriced listing simply helps sell the correctly priced home down the street.

Think about timing, but do not obsess over it.

Yes, gardens look their best in October and November and yes, buyer activity lifts with the temperature.

But the best time to sell is when your property is genuinely ready and your circumstances suit.

A well prepared home in August will outperform a rushed one in November every time.

Finally, a word on the bigger picture.

A healthy selling season depends on supply and I will keep saying it in every forum available to me, building enough homes is the only honest measure of any housing policy.

Real estate assessments for Services Australia can often be misunderstood as it’s assessed differently depending on the payment you’re getting.

It’s important to remember that in most cases the principal home doesn’t affect your rate of payment.

When we look at assessable income from real estate, Services

Australia does not recognise negative gearing, the tax arrangement where you can offset investment losses against other sources of taxable income.

If a property is making a loss, the assessable income from the property is $0.

If the payment or concession is based on your adjusted taxable income, like Family Tax Benefit, then you will need to add any net rental property losses to your taxable income as part of the claim.

For most other payments,

Services Australia will look at both the assessable asset and assessable income from real estate.

The value of the asset is the market value.

We assess the value at the time of application and then automatically revalue the property on the anniversary of your claim based on the movement of property prices.

Services Australia can offset the value of real estate with any loans secured against that property.

So if you have an investment property with a loan solely or jointly secured against the investment property, then we are able to reduce the market value by the proportion of the loan held against the property.

If the mortgage used to by the real estate was secured against the family home, then none of it can be used to offset the value of the real estate.

Time shares arrangements Time share arrangements

are a form of property ownership where you have a right to use a particular property or properties for your holidays.

They are not treated the same as standard real estate.

Services Australia assesses time share arrangements like a managed investment in that the income from the time share is deemed under our deeming rates.

This means that there will be an assessable income under our deeming

rules, whether you earn more or less than those amounts from the time share arrangement.

We assess the asset value of a time share as the purchase price.

That can be changed if you can provide evidence from recent sales that shows the value has fallen.

If there are any changes to your real estate or timeshare arrangements, you should let us know within 14 days.

By Emma Singleton, Senior Marketing Specialist – Happy Paws Happy Hearts SINCE January 2023, Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH), a national not-forprofit connecting socially isolated people with animals in need, has been proud to deliver its unique, purposeled programs from the Ten Lives Cat Centre in Hobart.

Each week, participants of all abilities come together at the cat centre to connect, learn, and grow alongside the cats and kittens in care.

Participants join smallgroup, hands-on sessions within a real shelter environment, where they learn practical skills in animal care with a focus on cat welfare, while building confidence, independence and social connection.

At the same time, the cats in care benefit from increased socialisation, enrichment and positive human interaction, helping them on their journey

towards finding their new homes.

For many participants, they come for the cats, but stay for the sense of belonging, community and friendships they find along the way.

Recently, the Hobart program has taken an exciting step forward, opening even more opportunities for connection and growth.

With the installation of a brand-new “air lock” connected to the Happy Paws Happy Hearts room on-site at Ten Lives Cat Centre, participants can now safely welcome cats into the dedicated session room during programs.

This important addition allows animal interactions to extend beyond the adoption areas and cat pens, creating even more opportunities for hands-on learning, deeper engagement and meaningful connection within a structured environment, all

while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the cats Maxxy, a seven year old long haired domestic male, was the first cat chosen to be available for adoption in the HPHH session room, where rather than remain in his pen, he could be involved in the sessions and roam freely to explore the space and boop lots of new friends (participants).

Participants decided to transform the whiteboard into a space that would help tell his story, thinking about how best to present Maxxy to those who might be considering giving him a home.

Together, they added his photo and carefully chose words to describe his personality.

When the Friday group were asked how they would describe Maxxy, one participant, Rohan, summed it up simply and beautifully.

“He’s one of the gang,” Rohan said.

In that moment, it was clear just how much Maxxy had become part of the group dynamic.

After multiple sessions of playful interactions, gentle grooming, quiet companionship and thoughtful care, participants had built a genuine connection with him.

They weren’t just spending time with a shelter cat; they were celebrating him and supporting him on his journey to adoption, which happened for Maxxy on April 1 2026.

HPHH is excited to have session vacancies across their programs running on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at Ten Lives Cat Centre.

For those who prefer canine companions, they also host programs connecting participants with rescue dogs in need over with our pals at Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania in Hobart.

HPHH programs are

fee-for-service and are welcoming participants from 12+ years who access NDIS, SLES, other support schemes, or are self-funded.

CatholicCare marks milestone on reconciliation journey CATHOLICCARE Tasmania has launched its first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), celebrating two years of work to strengthen relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities before formally unveiling the plan.

Principal aboriginal consultant Alarna Page said the organisation had deliberately taken a different approach, focusing on meaningful action before announcing its commitments.

“The launch of our Reconciliation Action Plan is an important milestone of our reconciliation journey,” she said.

“For us at CatholicCare Tasmania, the RAP is not the beginning of our work, it’s the recognition of the work that we’ve already achieved.

“It’s the relationships that we’ve already started to develop and the learning that has already taken place.”

Over the past two years, CatholicCare has invested in cultural learning, strengthened relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations, reviewed policies and embedded cultural safety throughout the organisation.

Ms Page said the launch was both a celebration of what had been achieved and a commitment to continuing the journey.

“As an organisation we are really committed to listening, to truth telling, acknowledging our past and working together in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations,” she said.

The launch event brought together staff, partner organisations, community members and Aboriginal organisations. It began with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony before the official unveiling of the Reconciliation Action Plan.

A highlight of the event was the unveiling of a commissioned artwork

by Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Reuben Oates, created to reflect CatholicCare’s reconciliation journey and aspirations for the future.

Mr Oates said the artwork, painted using acrylic on fine Italian linen, took around two to three weeks to complete from planning through to the finished piece.

“Because this was such a privilege to do and such an important piece,” he said.

“The reception’s been amazing, there’s been nothing but incredible and positive words of support.”

A fresh start for Hobart homes AT just 19 years old, Hobart’s Ben Hyland is already building a business with a simple philosophy, show up on time, communicate well and do the job properly.

The Taroona Football Club has received

$10,499 for their TeenKick Off program.

Triathlon South has received $7,000 for their Women in Triathlon program.

Hinkley to lead Devils into AFL FORMER Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has been appointed the Tasmania Devils’ inaugural AFL head coach, marking another major step towards the club’s 2028 entry into the national competition.

Hinkley has signed a five-year deal that will take him through to the end of the 2031 season,

following a year-long search that also attracted former AFL coaches John Longmire and Nathan Buckley.

The 59-year-old coached Port Adelaide from 2013 to 2025, leading the club to seven finals series and the 2020 minor premiership. He was also twice named AFL Coaches Association

Coach of the Year.

Hinkley said it was a privilege to become the first senior coach in the Devils’ history.

“It’s a huge privilege to be given the opportunity to build something from the very beginning,” he said.

“The responsibility to lead Tasmania’s entry into the AFL is something very

special and it excites me.

“Tasmania is a proud football state, and I can’t wait to get to know the players, staff, partners and community who have, and will continue to be, part of this from day one.”

Devils chair Grant O’Brien said Hinkley’s ability to develop young players and build strong relationships had made

him the right person for the role.

“We didn’t set out to find the candidate with the single best win-loss record; we set out to find the right coach for exactly what Tasmania needs right now,” he said.

“Ken’s ability to build relationships with young players and create an environment people

want to be part of is exceptional.”

Hinkley said Tasmania’s long football history made the opportunity particularly meaningful.

“As much as we’re a start-up club, we’re a football state,” he said.

“In 100 years’ time, when Tasmania has won so many premierships, people will look back and

ask who the first coach was, and my name will be there forever.” Hinkley will begin working with the club’s football department ahead of the Devils’ AFL debut in 2028, while the club expects to appoint its inaugural AFLW head coach by the end of this year.

New university basketball academy provides high performance pathway THE University of Tasmania (UTAS) has launched the UTAS Basketball Academy, creating a clear development pathway for young basketballers from grassroots participation through to representative, university and elite level basketball.

The Academy will

operate from the UniGym on the Sandy Bay Campus and is open to male and female athletes from the Under 12 age-group and above.

The program will be led by highly experienced Head Coach Anthony Stewart, alongside the UniGym and UTAS Sport teams.

It offers a training environment on par with professional sporting clubs, unlike anything else currently available in the State.

The academy will combine on-court training, strength and conditioning, athlete development support, and access to the University’s

facilities to deliver elite athlete testing.

Adding a unique mentoring dimension, athletes will also be able to learn from senior University Basketball League (UBL) players, connecting the next generation of Tasmanian basketballers with current university level talent.

UTAS has become a national leader in Australian University basketball in recent years, taking out both the men’s and women’s titles in the 2025 New Balance University Basketball League.

UTAS’ 3x3 Women’s team represented Australia in Brazil for

the 2025 International University Sports Federation (FISU) University World Cup 3×3 Basketball.

UTAS head of sport Kieran Perry said the Academy was a commitment to strengthening pathways between community sport and university

level competition.

“The academy strengthens connections between junior basketball participation and University programs, helping athletes explore future pathways within university sport,” he said.

International ice hockey thrills Hobart crowds

INTERNATIONAL ice hockey made a successful debut in Hobart earlier this month, with the inaugural Canada vs USA Ice Hockey Classic delivering three nights of fast-paced action at MyState Bank Arena.

More than 30 players from North America took to the ice as the longstanding rivalry between Canada and the United States was showcased in Tasmania for the first time, giving local

fans a rare opportunity to experience elite international ice hockey live.

Canada struck first in the series with an 8-4 victory in the opening match before Team USA bounced back in emphatic fashion, winning game two 10-4 to level the series.

USA then claimed the deciding match 8-6 to secure the Hobart leg of the series two games to one.

The event transformed

MyState Bank Arena into a world-class ice hockey venue and drew enthusiastic crowds eager to witness one of sport’s fiercest international rivalries.

Ice Hockey Classic director Kerry Goulet said bringing the event to Tasmania had been a landmark moment for the sport in Australia.

“To open our 2026 series in Hobart and bring international ice hockey to Tasmania for the first time

was incredibly exciting,” she said.

“Fans enjoyed fastpaced action, big hits and the electric atmosphere that defines the game and the legendary Canada vs USA rivalry.”

Following the Hobart series, the Ice Hockey Classic continued in Melbourne and Canberra, with organisers hopeful the successful Tasmanian debut will pave the way for more international ice hockey in the state.
