Christmas lunch celebrating community and culture Italian Day Centre members Rrok Lufi, Argentino D’ettorre and Opposition Leader, Josh Willie MP

THE Italian Day Centre, a community-based notfor-profit organization supporting seniors, people with disabilities and individuals from diverse backgrounds, hosted its annual Christmas Lunch this December.

Since 2009, the centre has been delivering agedcare and disability services across Tasmania, fostering inclusion and cultural connection.

The centre is widely recognised for promoting social inclusion and wellbeing through

programs that combine care with cultural activities.

Its mission is to ensure that older Tasmanians and those living with disabilities can maintain independence while enjoying a strong sense of community.

Regular events such as language classes, cultural celebrations and social lunches help foster friendships and reduce isolation among members.

This year’s highlight was authentic pizza prepared by Tommaso and Mario Di Lenno from

Sandy Bay, complemented by a festive menu featuring handmade ravioli, roast turkey, and seasonal vegetables.

The Honourable Josh Willie, Leader of the Opposition, joined the celebration and remarked on the warmth and

hospitality of the event.

He emphasized that “the beauty of multicultural cuisine in Tasmania is part of our history and our future and it unites us,” acknowledging the Italian community’s efforts in sharing its rich culture

and delicious recipes, which have become beloved across the state.

The Christmas Lunch was a sold-out success, with 110 guests enjoying an afternoon of great food, company, and cultural celebration at the Italian Day Centre.

where everyone gets to have a say on who they feel is best able to represent them and their community within the tier of government undoubtedly closest to, and best able to serve, the people.

Yes, after last year’s unexpected state election, people probably aren’t thrilled about the prospect of another election, more posters, more campaigning.

However, it is important everyone not only gets their say on the make-up of our council but also has access to all the information they may need when it comes to understanding who the candidates are and what they stand for.

We deserve to have the best and brightest minds representing our community.

We deserve to have great ideas and thoughtprovoking debates, ultimately contributing to a stronger, more vibrant municipal area.

I would also take the opportunity to encourage

anyone and everyone who has ever had the drive to represent their community around a council table to start thinking about putting their hand up.

Even though the ballot papers won’t start landing in letterboxes until October, now is the time to start getting organised.

Speaking of elections, this year will also see Council continue our lobbying efforts of the Federal Government for funding to redevelop the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool.

With an election due in 2028, we will continue to put this $84 million project in front of the major parties and their candidates for serious consideration, in line with our business case.

As a growing community, we will need a redeveloped pool into the future, and we will be demanding the politicians take a regional view to what such a facility would offer.

This year will also mark the re-opening of the current pool following work to refurbish the facility and ensure it is safe for the public to use.

It will be ready to open later this year in what will no doubt be an exciting time for our community.

With improved changerooms, disability access, and structural repairs, the pool will be able to serve swimmers for a number of years until such point we can redevelop the facility into a bigger, better aquatic centre.

As a Council, this year will see us progress the establishment of a dedicated youth hub in our Glenorchy CBD area.

We have had great success with our youth programs, particularly our regular games of street basketball which not only provide a bit of fun, but keep our civic areas activated and engaging.

A youth hub will

provide a permanent base for our youth engagement officers and the programs we offer to support young people and ensure we are doing everything we can to provide safe and welcoming spaces for everyone in our community.

We will continue to work hand in hand with Tasmania Police

to stamp out antisocial behaviour and crime.

Like many communities around Tasmania, from time to time our municipal area is impacted by a small minority of people who are intent on doing the wrong thing.

We have worked hard with Tasmania Police to ensure people feel safe to come into our city, and

we know how important this is for our businesses, residents and local economy.

Overall, I’m looking forward to another year of our city collectively achieving great things.

We have much to celebrate and much to be thankful for, and I have no doubt we will continue to do this right through 2026.

I WOULD firstly like to wish all Glenorchy residents a very happy new year and hope everyone enjoyed a safe and meaningful festive season.

No doubt many people are feverishly trying to keep on top of their new year resolutions, as well as take a well-earned deep breath before getting ready to dive into another year and whatever it may hold.

From my perspective as Mayor, 2026 promises to be an extremely exciting one for Glenorchy, albeit with the likelihood of a few challenges along the way.

New mural brings colour and connection to Glenorchy FROM FRONT PAGE

A STRIKING new mural has been unveiled on the western wall of the Glenorchy City Council Chambers, transforming the Glenorchy Bus Mall into a vibrant and welcoming gateway to the city.

The large scale artwork has quickly caught the attention of commuters, visitors and locals, with its bold colour palette and intricate detail celebrating one of Glenorchy’s most cherished natural features, Humphreys Rivulet.

The mural reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to creativity, community pride and a strong sense of place.

Created by Tasmanian street artist Trent Fischer, the artwork depicts Humphreys Rivulet surrounded by lush native vegetation.

Fischer’s distinctive style brings the scene to life through detailed depictions of local wildlife, including a spotted quoll, a wallaby and joey and a watchful magpie.

The mural builds on Glenorchy City Council’s long standing support for public art and follows earlier initiatives such as the Corridor of Modern Art murals in Moonah.

It also aligns with the Glenorchy City of Arts 2040 strategy, which aims to strengthen the city’s identity as a cultural hub and increase opportunities for creative expression in public spaces.

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the mural had already made a noticeable impact on the Bus Mall precinct.

“This artwork has

completely transformed the area and created a strong sense of arrival in the heart of Glenorchy,” she said.

“It celebrates the natural places our community values while adding colour, life and pride to a busy public space.”

Mayor Hickey said the mural also supported the council’s approach to graffiti management by encouraging authorised artworks that enhance the streetscape and deter vandalism.

“This is just the beginning,” she said.

“We are excited to explore more opportunities for murals across Glenorchy that tell our stories and reflect who we are as a community.”

MBS Fitness focuses on strength, confidence and community MBS Fitness is building a reputation as a welcoming space where people of all ages can build their strength, fitness and learn boxing skills, one session at a time.

Owned and operated

by Kirill Anisimov, MBS stands for Mind, Body and Spirit, a philosophy that underpins the gym’s approach to training.

“At MBS Fitness, we help people get stronger every day,” Mr Anisimov said.

“People come here to learn new skills, build strength and overcome challenges, one training session at a time, one exercise at a time, one rep at a time.”

MBS Fitness offers boxing, strength and general fitness classes for adults, youth and children, as well as personal training.

Mr Anisimov said the gym catered to a wide age range, with members spanning from young children through to people in their late sixties and early seventies.

Importantly, no prior gym experience is required.

“People can just walk through the door and we guide them through everything,” he said.

“We modify training to suit each person, especially in group settings, so everyone works at a level that is right for them.”

Mr Anisimov is

currently the sole trainer, running around 15 group classes alongside personal training sessions, while gradually building a team.

With the support of Tasmanian construction company The Young Group, who are actively developing local infrastructure in Bridgewater, MBS Fitness is transitioning into a new purposebuilt facility after previously operating out of the PCYC. “We’re proud to support projects like MBS Fitness that create positive, lasting spaces for the Bridgewater community,” said Trent Young, Director of The Young Group.

Mr Anisimov said he greatly valued the support he received from the PCYC and the Young Group.

“It is about long term relationships and partnerships,” he said.

“That is how we provide better services to the community.”

Mr Anisimov said the aim of MBS Fitness was not just physical improvement, but helping people feel supported and capable.

“For us, it is about helping people get better and stronger, both physically and mentally,” he said.

A difficult decision to end the year and the work that lies ahead

AS we begin a new year, I want to take the opportunity to reflect on one of the most significant and challenging decisions I have faced as your Independent Member for Elwick – the Upper House vote on the Macquarie Point stadium.

In the weeks leading up to the vote, I received more than 3,000 individual emails, letters and messages from people right across Tasmania.

That level of engagement speaks volumes.

Tasmanians care deeply about this issue, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to share their views with me, whether in support, opposition, or somewhere in between.

I won’t pretend this decision came easily.

In fact, it was one of the most difficult I have made in my time in public office to date.

From the outset, my commitment was to listen carefully, scrutinise the proposal thoroughly, and put the interests of Tasmanian taxpayers and the community front and centre.

Through that process, I raised serious concerns about the project – particularly around the potential for cost blowouts, affordability, governance

arrangements, and the potential impact on grassroots sport funding and other essential services.

These were not abstract concerns; they reflected what many of you raised with me directly.

I put those concerns firmly to the State Government.

As a result, the Premier agreed to a series of safeguards designed to protect Tasmanian taxpayers.

These include caps on the state contribution to the stadium and high-performance training centre, stronger governance arrangements with independent oversight, and increased funding for community sport.

My letters to and from the Premier outlining these

safeguards were formally tabled in Parliament and are now on the public record.

Based on those commitments – and recognising that this vote represents only the first step in a long development process – I ultimately voted in support of the project.

Importantly, there are still many conditions that must

be met before any construction can proceed.

Oversight does not end with this vote.

The Government will be required to report on the implementation of these safeguards and the delivery of the project more broadly through Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, on which I serve, as well as through the project’s

independent oversight committee.

I will continue to scrutinise the project closely at every stage.

What continues to sadden me is that realising the dream of a Tasmanian AFL team – something I believe most Tasmanians want – has become so deeply entangled in a divisive stadium debate.

I truly hope that, over time, our

community can begin to heal, reunite and refocus on what brings us together.

As always, my door remains open.

Thank you for engaging respectfully, passionately, and thoughtfully in this conversation.

I look forward to continuing to represent you in 2026 with the same diligence, care and determination.

THE Glenorchy City Council has welcomed a major boost to community wellbeing, with the Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF) approving a $1 million grant to help deliver a youth hub in Glenorchy, subject to final grant arrangements.

Once finalised, this funding will support the creation of a safe, inclusive and dedicated space for young people in Glenorchy.

Council is preparing to establish the permanent youth hub within the Glenorchy Central Business District (CBD), building on the success of outdoor pilot programs delivered over the past year.

These pilots, run in the same CBD location, have already helped reduce antisocial behaviour, strengthened relationships between young people and

support services and demonstrated the clear need for an ongoing, purpose-designed facility.

Subject to the execution of the grant deed, the TCF funding will enable the council to resource an after-school drop-in program tailored to meet the needs of local young people.

The after-school program will operate from 3pm to 5pm, Monday to Friday, offering access during one of the most significant high-need periods of the day.

This funding would support delivery of a safe, welcoming and engaging environment supported by qualified youth workers, youthled activities, nutritious snacks and essential operational resources.

The TCF grant is also intended to support three additional Youth

Engagement Officer roles, enabling the council to maintain safe supervision ratios and offer consistent, highquality programming.

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the funding represents a significant step forward for Glenorchy’s young people.

“Once confirmed, this grant unlocks the future of a youth hub that our community has been asking for over many years,” she said.

“What truly set this project apart was the passion of young people themselves, their willingness to tell their stories, share their views and clearly articulate what they need.

“Their voices played a crucial role in helping us secure this significant investment.

“It means we can provide a safe, stable and supportive space

where young people can connect, learn, and feel genuinely welcomed.”

Mayor Hickey said the success of previous outdoor youth activation pilots demonstrated the positive impact accessible youth facilities could have.

“We’ve already seen fewer antisocial incidents in the CBD and stronger engagement with youth services simply by being present in that space,” she said.

“This hub will be shaped by young people themselves, giving them opportunities to lead activities, suggest ideas and help create a place that reflects their needs and aspirations.”

The council will continue to progress detailed planning and project delivery, with further updates to follow once the grant deed is finalised.

Volunteer costs cut as new protections strengthened TASMANIANS looking to volunteer in the new year will face fewer financial barriers, with a new pilot removing fees for volunteers applying for a Registration to Work with Vulnerable People.

Volunteering Tasmania Chair Sarah Wilcox said the initiative was a significant step forward for the sector, helping remove out-of-pocket costs that can discourage people from volunteering.

“Our research shows that these costs can deter prospective volunteers,” Ms Wilcox said.

“We know volunteers already carry many expenses that volunteerinvolving organisations are not always able to reimburse.”

Ms Wilcox said the pilot was shaped by extensive consultation with the volunteering sector and thanked Volunteering Tasmania

members, partners and stakeholders who shared their experiences to help inform the advocacy.

“We’re excited to see this result and grateful to everyone who contributed their insights,” she said.

“We also want to thank the Tasmanian Government and the Minister for Community and Multicultural Affairs Madeleine Ogilvie for working with us to make this pilot a reality.”

Ms Wilcox said the start of a new year was an ideal time for people to consider volunteering.

“Many people use the new year as a chance for a fresh start or a new resolution,” she said.

“There has never been a better time to volunteer in Tasmania.”

The announcement comes as the Tasmanian Government tables the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People

Amendment Bill 2025 in Parliament, strengthening protections for children and vulnerable people.

The bill forms part of a national reform agenda agreed by the Standing Council of AttorneysGeneral in August 2025, which committed states and territories to mutual recognition of negative Working With Children Check outcomes.

Attorney-General Guy Barnett said the changes

would ensure stronger safeguards across jurisdictions.

“Tasmania is acting to deliver on our commitment through this Bill, which will strengthen our Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act,” Mr Barnett said.

“These protections will ensure that a person denied registration, or whose registration has been revoked in one jurisdiction, cannot

be granted or hold registration in another.”

Mr Barnett said the Government aimed to debate the Bill promptly to ensure the measures were in place by the end of the year.

“Practical, commonsense safeguards like this play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and protection of children and vulnerable people in our community,” he said.

GLENORCHY Rotary wishes to acknowledge the generosity of Power Solutions Tasmania in kindly stepping in to organise and conduct our annual Race Day Fundraiser in 2025.

This annual fundraiser has been run by club members since 2003.

This year it would have had to be cancelled except for the offer from PST. Over the years the event has raised thousands of dollars to help

various organisations in Glenorchy.

A significant proportion of funds raised at this year’s event will assist Home Base (previously Colony 47) to continue their programs for young people in crisis.

TasTAFE Graduate secures a career pathway, and her dreams are within reach TASTAFE graduate Isabel Parsey completed her Certificate III in Tourism in 2025 and secured her job at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary near Richmond very quickly – applying, interviewing and being offered the position in little more than a week.

“Before I started TasTAFE, I had no idea what I wanted to do.

But now I’m in a job that I love, and I have a qualification and a plan for the future. TasTAFE really helped,” Ms Parsey said.

The Certificate III in Tourism introduces learners to the core principles of the industry and is delivered at TasTAFE campuses in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.

It is one of several qualifications and short

courses being offered in 2026 through Fee Free TAFE, which removes the barrier of the cost of training for those looking to develop a career pathway or those already working and wanting to upskill.

“Having the Certificate III definitely helped me get the job. And now that I’ve started work, when visitors ask me questions, a lot of the stuff that I learned at TasTAFE comes back and I know how to speak with them,” Ms Parsey said.

“I’m in the Business and Guest Services team: I run errands into town, I help them in the gift shop, I order stock and do stocktake, I manage our firstaid supplies, I grab medications for the animals, I organise the

storage areas and I also design their signs and posters for promotions, so, I’m not stuck behind a desk all day.

“Working at Bonorong is a good balance between personal and working life, and the steady income does help with saving for future plans.

“I would like to travel, driving around Australia, living off the road.

“After that I’d like to start a small farm and do wildlife rehab. It’s a

pretty big dream.”

From having no plans for her future, Isabel has grown in confidence and is now on a career pathway with a “big dream” firmly in her sights.

PLANS to redevelop the Hobart Showground precinct continue to progress, with the project set to transform the site into a year-round hub for events, community activities and emergency response.

Led by the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania, the redevelopment includes new pavilions, upgraded visitor facilities and flexible spaces designed to support major events, sport and community use.

for Elwick Bec Thomas recently toured the site to view progress and learn more about the long-term vision for the precinct.

Ms Thomas said the project represented a significant investment in the northern suburbs.

“The Showgrounds have long been part of Tasmania’s cultural fabric, and this redevelopment will help ensure the site continues to serve the community well into the future,” she said.

She said the upgrades

would allow the precinct to be used beyond major event periods.

“This is about creating a space that works year-round for community groups, local events and emergency services, not just during show season,” Ms Thomas said.

Once complete, the redevelopment is expected to deliver social, cultural and economic benefits while preserving the Showgrounds’ longstanding role in Tasmanian life.

New permanent BreastScreen Tasmania clinic set for Glenorchy THE Tasmanian Government is progressing plans for new permanent BreastScreen Tasmania clinic in Glenorchy.

The Glenorchy Community Health Centre has been identified as the preferred site for a new clinic in Hobart’s northern suburbs.

Work is underway to engage with local stakeholders and community members on the plans for these new clinics.

The Glenorchy War Memorial Pool

Pool redevelopment reaches halfway milestone THE redevelopment of the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool has reached a significant milestone, with construction now approaching the halfway mark and the project on track for completion later in 2026.

Works on the multimillion dollar upgrade have continued to progress steadily, with the transformation of the facility becoming increasingly visible both inside and outside the complex.

Inside, newly plastered changerooms are taking shape, while the installation of energy efficient skylights has significantly improved natural light, enhancing both comfort and sustainability.

Externally, crews have

made strong progress on the main pool shell, completing key reinforcement and base construction works that form the foundation of the revitalised facility.

The redevelopment will deliver a modern, accessible and welcoming pool for the Glenorchy community.

Upgrades improve Glenorchy dog parks DOG owners and their four legged companions across Glenorchy are set to benefit from a series of upgrades aimed at making local dog parks safer, more accessible and more enjoyable for the whole community.

Glenorchy City Council has been investing in improvements across several off lead areas, recognising the important role these spaces play in supporting active lifestyles, social connection and responsible pet ownership.

Mayor Sue Hickey said dog parks were valued community spaces that brought people together while providing safe environments for dogs to exercise and socialise.

“Our dog parks are places where people connect, dogs thrive and community grows,” she said.

At Chapel Street Dog

Park, a new small dog area has recently been completed, providing a secure space for smaller dogs to play and build confidence away from larger breeds.

Additional seating has been installed throughout the park to improve comfort for owners, with a new dog waste bin also planned to support cleanliness and responsible use.

In Lutana, the off lead dog exercise area at Anear Court is now fully fenced, significantly improving safety and giving owners greater peace of mind while their dogs run freely.

Further improvements are being explored across the municipality.

Council is investigating the creation of a dedicated greyhound exercise area in response to growing interest from local owners and the

specific needs of the breed.

Collinsvale Dog Park has also seen increasing use, with Council assessing the feasibility of installing a new access airlock gate to improve safety and ease of entry.

An additional waste bin is also being considered to support higher visitation.

A proposed community Facebook group would provide a way for local dog owners to connect and share information.

Mayor Hickey said Council was committed to continuing improvements across all dog parks.

“We know how much our residents value these spaces, which is why we are focused on making them welcoming, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone, both two legged and four legged,” she said.

Glenorchy City Council workers removing graffiti on Main Road

THE Glenorchy City Council has reinforced its commitment to keeping public spaces clean and welcoming, following the endorsement of an updated Graffiti Management Policy.

Mayor Sue Hickey said the updated policy provided clearer guidance on Council’s role and strengthened its ability to respond where graffiti affects public amenity.

“It was pleasing to see the policy endorsed alongside the supporting

documents that guide how Council manages graffiti across the city,” she said.

A key change allows Council to actively assist with graffiti removal on private property in certain circumstances, including where graffiti is offensive, highly visible from public spaces or located along boundaries shared with Council land.

This change aims to reduce the impact of graffiti that affects the wider community, even when it occurs outside

Council owned property.

Council officers continue to respond to graffiti across the municipality, with thousands of items removed each year as part of the city cleansing program.

Despite these efforts, graffiti remains an ongoing issue, particularly on nonCouncil properties where removal responsibilities usually rest with owners or occupiers under the Environment Amenity By law 2017.

Mayor Hickey said

the updated policy balanced enforcement with positive outcomes by continuing to support authorised murals and street art.

“Encouraging legal and creative expression is an important part of reducing illegal graffiti while adding colour and character to our city,” she said.

“Residents want clean and safe streets, but they also value artwork that reflects local stories and identity and this strengthened approach helps achieve both.”

Pedalling connection and opportunity THE Tasmanian Bike Collective continues to support community connection and wellbeing through its Derwent Park workshop, offering practical skills, affordable transport options and a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds.

The collective provides opportunities for participants to learn bicycle maintenance, access refurbished bikes and build confidence through hands-on involvement.

Its programs are designed to reduce barriers to transport while fostering social connection and inclusion.

Independent Member for Elwick Bec Thomas recently visited the workshop to learn more about the collective’s work and speak with participants.

THE Glenorchy City Council has reached a significant financial milestone, officially paying off the last of its outstanding debt and delivering a debt free balance sheet for the first time in more than a decade.

The achievement follows years of careful financial management by successive councils and staff, who have worked to steadily reduce debt while continuing to deliver services and invest in local infrastructure.

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the result reflected a long term commitment to responsible decision making and financial discipline.

“It has been 12 years since Glenorchy last handed down a surplus budget, and a succession of councils

and staff have been working hard ever since to reduce the council’s debt levels and get back in the black,” Mayor Hickey said.

Mayor Hickey acknowledged that while debt funding can sometimes play a role in delivering major projects, reaching a debt free position strengthened the council’s ability to prioritise future investment for the benefit of the community.

“Getting out of the red certainly assists the council in making clear decisions about where and how we invest on behalf of our ratepayers,” she said.

Mayor Hickey said achieving zero net debt while remaining one of the lowest rating city councils in Tasmania was

particularly pleasing, especially following the financial pressures experienced during and after the Covid 19 period.

“Delivering this result just a few years after those cost spikes is something our Council can be very proud of,” she said.

“At the same time, the council has continued to invest in services and infrastructure that support local businesses and improve liveability across Glenorchy.

“However, being debt free does not mean taking our foot off the pedal.

“It reinforces our resolve to keep investing wisely and strategically, with a firm focus on long term outcomes for our community and ratepayers.”

30 years of care and community CANCER Council Tasmania has marked 30 years of supporting Tasmanians affected by cancer, recognising three decades of advocacy, education and direct support services delivered across the state.

Since its establishment, the organisation has played a vital role in funding research, promoting cancer prevention and providing practical assistance to individuals and families navigating diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

The milestone also acknowledged the contribution of thousands of volunteers, staff and supporters who have helped shape the organisation’s work over the past three decades.

anniversary event and said the significance of the milestone extended well beyond the numbers.

“For 30 years, Cancer Council Tasmania has been there for people at some of the most difficult moments of their lives,” she said.

THE Glenorchy City Council is set to install a new anti-skid road surface in Sunmont Street, Derwent Park, as part of a targeted effort to reduce hooning and improve safety in one of the municipality’s most persistent driving hotspots.

The upgrade is being delivered through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, which has allocated $185,000 to improve known crash risk locations across Derwent Park, Moonah and Glenorchy.

The Sunmont Street project, valued at $50,000, will introduce a specialised surface treatment using calcite bauxite strips, a proven method for discouraging dangerous driving

behaviour in industrial areas.

The new surface is expected to be installed in the coming months and will complement the enforcement work already underway in the area.

Tasmania Police has been working closely with the council throughout 2025, conducting targeted operations in Sunmont Street and nearby Sunmont Place to address unsafe driving behaviour.

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the works reflected the council’s ongoing commitment to road safety and responding to community concerns.

“Road safety impacts us all, and Council is very pleased to receive

Black Spot funding to address local safety issues,” she said.

“This financial year Council is investing $14.7 million in roads and footpaths across the municipality, and this additional funding allows us to deliver targeted upgrades in areas where the risk is highest.”

Mayor Hickey said the new surface treatment was an important next step after years of collaboration with Tasmania Police.

“We have been working alongside police for a long time to address safety concerns in Sunmont Street, and we are optimistic this treatment will make a real difference for workers, businesses and visitors to the area,” she said.

Supporting mums through connection THE Mum Connection has celebrated its first year of operation, marking 12 months of creating safe and welcoming spaces for Tasmanian mothers to connect and support one another.

Founded in 2024, the organisation has grown steadily, delivering walking groups, workshops and community events aimed at reducing isolation and improving mental wellbeing during early parenthood.

The Tasmanian Transport Museum steam trains

Heritage rail service to extend into Berriedale PASSENGER trains are set to return to Hobart’s northern suburbs for the first time in more than 50 years, with the Tasmanian Transport Museum granted approval to extend its heritage rail service into Berriedale.

The Museum has received a variation of accreditation under national rail safety laws, allowing it to expand operations beyond its current limits and mark a major milestone in a long running community project.

A spokesperson for the Tasmanian Transport Museum said the extension was the result of years of work by a small but dedicated team of volunteers, supported by local government, contractors and rail regulators.

“After years of hard work by the museum’s volunteers, and with the assistance of local government, contractors and rail regulators, the time has finally come to launch this long anticipated and significant extension to our highly popular heritage rail service,” the spokesperson said.

The extension will see passenger trains reintroduced to Hobart’s northern suburbs for the first time in more than half a century, reconnecting communities with a piece of Tasmania’s transport history.

Even more significantly, the Berriedale extension completes the second stage of the Museum’s Greater Hobart Heritage Rail Project.

The long term vision for the project is to operate tourist trains along a much larger section of track, eventually running services from Glenorchy through to Granton.

The Tasmanian Transport Museum’s heritage rail experiences have become a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike, offering a unique way to experience the region while preserving and celebrating Tasmania’s rail history.

The new extension is expected to further boost interest in the museum and strengthen its role as a key cultural and tourism asset for Greater Hobart.

Further details about services and timelines are expected to be announced as final preparations are completed.

Services Australia touches the lives of almost every household in Australia and in the new year there’s changes to Child Care Subsidy and Medicare-supported health services.

These are the changes happening from January 2026 and what they mean for your hip pocket.

Child Care Subsidy – 3 Day Guarantee From 5 January 2026, the Child Care Subsidy activity test will be replaced, giving eligible families at least 3 days of subsided child care a week, no matter how much time they spend in recognised participation, like work or study.

This is known as the ‘3

Day Guarantee’.

If you’re already getting Child Care Subsidy, you don’t need to do anything.

Services Australia will apply the updates.

The changes help families who missed out under the activity test access early childhood education and care by giving families at least 3 days of subsidised child care a week.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children can get 100 hours of subsidised care each fortnight.

Families will still need to pay a gap fee or out of pocket cost to their child care provider, based on their Child Care Subsidy percentage. There is no change to how the rate of subsidy is worked out.

More help with dental costs for kids From January, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule will cover even more costs of going to the dentist for eligible children and their families.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a government program that can cover part or all of the cost of basic dental services for children aged 17 or under.

This can cover up to$1,158 every two years, an increase of $26 from 1 January 2026. This could be over $9,800 in coverage by the time they turn 17.

Following a rise in reports of animals suffering heat illness over the last few months, RSPCA Tasmania is urging the community to never leave dogs unattended in vehicles or on the back of utes, warning that even mild weather can have deadly consequences.

Cars heat up incredibly fast. On a day that feels comfortable to us — around 22°C — the temperature inside a parked car can reach as high as 47°C within an hour. Dogs can suffer fatal heatstroke in as little as six minutes.

Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting.

When the surrounding air is too hot, this cooling mechanism fails, causing their internal body temperature to rise rapidly. Once a dog’s temperature exceeds 41°C, they are at serious risk of heatstroke — a life-threatening emergency that only around 50 per cent of dogs survive.

Parking in the shade, leaving windows down, tinting windows or leaving water inside the vehicle do not significantly reduce the risk of heat related illnesses and can create a false sense of security.

Dogs are also at significant risk when transported on the back of utes. Metal trays can become extremely hot in the sun, causing severe burns to paws and bodies, as well as heat stress and dehydration.

In Tasmania, it is illegal to transport a dog on a metal ute tray at or above 28°C without insulating material to protect them from the hot surface. Dogs on utes must also have access to adequate ventilated shade and water at all times. Failing to meet these requirements is an offence and can result in fines and penalties under Tasmanian dog regulations.

Some dogs are particularly vulnerable to heat stress, including flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds such as bulldogs and boxers, overweight dogs, puppies, senior dogs, and those with existing medical conditions. However, any dog can suffer heatstroke, regardless of breed or size.

Signs of Heatstroke in Animals Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Warning signs may include: • Excessive panting or drooling • Lethargy or weakness • Unsteadiness, shaking or collapse • Rapid breathing If you suspect heatstroke, seek urgent veterinary care.

While waiting for help, move the animal to a cool area and gently apply cool (not ice-cold) water to the belly and armpits, followed by fanning. Do not use ice, as this can worsen the condition.

What To Do If You See a Dog in a Hot Car 1. Note the vehicle’s registration, make and location 2. Call Tasmania Police on 131 444 immediately* 3. Stay nearby until help arrives *Police have the authority to intervene if an animal is at risk.

Heat Affects More Than Just Dogs While dogs are most commonly reported, other animals are also highly vulnerable to heat, including cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and other small pets. Many of these animals are unable to regulate their body temperature effectively and can suffer heatstroke even at relatively moderate temperatures.

RSPCA Tasmania’s advice is simple Leave animals at home whenever possible, in a ventilated cool, shaded environment with plenty of fresh water.

Losing a beloved companion in such preventable circumstances would be devastating.

New era for Ten Lives MUCH needed upgrades at the Ten Lives Cat Centre are now complete.

We have introduced a new adoption suite, an X-ray machine and upgraded hospital facilities, all of which benefit the cats and kittens in our care, the staff and volunteers who work here every day, and the wonderful people who visit us.

These changes are the result of much planning and patience, and we’re incredibly grateful to our generous supporters who made it all possible.

We are committed to showing that when the community supports Ten Lives, we put that support where it counts.

Our new adoption area is much larger and more comfortable, providing a better space for the kittens, cats and the

community members looking to adopt them.

Since opening the new space, the response from the community (and the kitties) has been nothing but praise.

The new X-ray facilities are particularly exciting, as we’ve never had the capacity to do X-rays onsite before.

“This is a first for the Ten Lives Cat Centre,” Ten Lives president Paula Wreidt said.

“We are excited, and we are very grateful to everyone who has been on this journey with us. It really does herald a new era for the Ten Lives Cat Centre moving forward.”

Most cats dislike travelling in vehicles, so being able to conduct X-rays on-site means quicker treatment and a less stressful experience for them.

“The X-ray machine opens opportunities for future initiatives, including partnership with the local government to do community cat management programs,” Ten Lives CEO Noel Hunt said.

On top of that, our vet team have found the X-ray machine to be invaluable with helping them diagnose certain issues so they can provide the absolute best care in the most efficient way.

All of this has been a long time coming, but we’ve worked hard to make sure it’s done right.

The new adoption area coincides with better, bigger hospital facilities, improving the efficiency of the hospital, reducing noise and movement, and creating a smoother, calmer environment for cats in our care. Again,

none of this would have been possible without your support!

“It’s fantastic,” Mr Hunt said.

“The team are really thrilled. They work extremely hard in a very challenging environment; there’s so many cats and kittens coming into our care all the time.”

“We don’t know today whether we’ll get 10 or 30 cats and kittens coming in.”

“The team here, with the support of the community, are getting the job done and doing the heavy lifting looking after the cats and kittens, making a big difference for the community, making a big difference for the environment.”

At this time of year, we usually have around 200 cats and kittens in our care.

While these upgrades enable us to look after more animals, our fantastic network of foster carers remains as essential as ever, especially during kitten season.

“If there’s anyone thinking they’d like to be a foster carer, we provide training, we provide all the materials that they need, and it can be just as fulfilling as owning a cat,” Ms Wreidt said.

Tasmanians welcome first LGBTIQA+ strategy LGBTIQA+ community representatives have welcomed Tasmania’s first whole-ofgovernment LGBTIQA+ Strategy ‘Our Inclusive Island’.

The Strategy acknowledges the significant advances Tasmania has made toward LGBTIQA+ inclusion, but also how far there is still to go.

The strategy will form the basis for an LGBTIQA+ Action Plan to be released next year.

“We applaud the Tasmanian Government for its landmark LGBTIQA+ Strategy, the first of its kind in Tasmania,” Equality Tasmania spokesperson Rodney Croome said.

“We thank the many LGBTIQA+ people and

our allies who have worked for decades to bring the Tasmanian Government and the Island’s LGBTIQA+ community to this point of mutual cooperation and hope for the future.”

“The strategy will help focus the attention of all government agencies on the continued disadvantages LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians face because of ongoing prejudice, discrimination and stigma.”

“The job now is to work with the state government on developing an action plan that ensures the commitments in the Strategy are put into effect.”

“Working It Out welcomes the release of the LGBTIQA+ Strategy,

built on community voices gathered and shared in the ‘Telling Us the Story Report’,” Working It Out CEO Olivia Hogarth said.

“Listening to community need, and evidence-based research, is critical to providing the services that respond to that need.

“Research continues to indicate poorer outcomes for LGBTIQA+ people in a variety of metrics including mental health and suicidality, housing, social supports and safety and general life satisfaction.

“This strategy and the accompanying action plan will provide a framework for the Tasmanian government to address these inequities.”

Houses in ‘Drip Village’, Lutana

TUCKED away in a quiet corner of Lutana, the distinctive homes of EZ Drip Village remain a striking reminder of Glenorchy’s industrial and social history, and the innovative responses to post war challenges faced by local employers.

Glenorchy City Council Heritage Officer David Parham said the village was an important but lesser known example of welfare driven housing linked to the Electrolytic Zinc works at Risdon.

While many residents are familiar with the original EZ workers housing estate

established in 1918 on the slopes overlooking Prince of Wales Bay, fewer realise a second estate was developed on the opposite side of the hill nearly 30 years later.

Built between 1946 and 1949, the Lutana estate was created during a period of severe housing shortages following the Second World War. At the time, EZ struggled to attract and retain specialist workers due to the lack of available housing.

The solution was the construction of a new estate below Risdon Road,

overlooking New Town Bay, providing modern homes close to the zinc works.

Local contractor NG Nicholson built the houses along Turanna Street and Lallaby Road using a panel and pier construction method and Tasmanian sourced materials. This approach helped overcome supply shortages and reduced costs during a period of national austerity.

The homes were modern for their time and featured architectural elements such as parapets, tiled roofs, curved bays, steel framed windows and

integrated garages.

What truly set them apart, however, was the rough stucco exterior finish that gave the estate its enduring nickname, Drip Village.

Today, the houses stand as solid and attractive examples of post war modernism, reflecting EZ’s commitment to its workforce and its ability to adapt during challenging times. Their continued presence adds to Glenorchy’s rich built heritage and tells an important story of industry, innovation and community.

New nets to support the future of cricket in Glenorchy THANKS to the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund (ACIF) and the Glenorchy City Council, Glenorchy Cricket Club has been able to provide some much-needed upgrades to the nets at KGV Oval.

As part of the ACIF, Cricket Tasmania and Cricket Australia partner with clubs, associations, schools, and councils, offering the opportunity to apply for funding for cricket facility projects.

Glenorchy Cricket Club has used an ACIF grant to build a fully enclosed, multi-purpose outdoor training area

with retractable cricket nets to allow for different conditions and other training drills inside the netted area.

Prior to these upgrades through the ACIF, the nets did not meet the needs of the junior program at Glenorchy Cricket Club, particularly for its growing junior and female programs.

An additional three nets were added to help support the growth of the game at Glenorchy and cricket in the northern suburbs, via a $40k grant from the ACIF, with strong support from the Glenorchy City Council, which helped deliver the project.

Glenorchy Cricket Club president Brett Geeves said he was pleased to have seen the ACIF support the growth of the club.

“The upgrade of our old, unused turf nets into a four-lane synthetic facility has provided a safe space for youngsters in our expanding junior cricket programs to learn and experience cricket in what feels like a high-performance environment,” he said.

“It has also allowed our broader club greater connectivity, with CTPL, HJL and women’s teams now able to train at the same time, which has always been problematic.

Glenorchy City Council Mayor Sue Hickey said she was proud to have supported the project.

“Glenorchy City Council is proud to have supported the upgrade of the cricket facilities at KGV Oval,” she said.

“Investing in quality sporting infrastructure is vital to encouraging participation across all ages and abilities, and this project will provide lasting benefits for our community.

“We look forward to seeing local players, from juniors through to senior teams, make the most of this fantastic new facility.”

Racing returns for Summer TASMANIAN jockey Craig Newitt will be chasing an incredible 10th win in the Devonport Cup when the race is run on Wednesday 7 January 2026.

Newitt, who will spend more time in Tasmania over the coming months, said he always looked forward to returning home.

“I have always been taught never to forget where you come from.

I love coming back to Tassie, so for the next few months I will be back and forth a bit,” he said.

Newitt won the last two Devonport Cups on

the Glenn Stevensontrained Ashy Boy, his first Devonport Cup win was in 2002.

Newitt said the Devonport Cup was a race he targeted well in advance each year.

“Like any sporting person, you want to win your hometown Cup or Grand Final.

It is basically the one race of the year when I start looking for a horse months in advance,” he said.

“I have a couple in the pipeline for this year, so hopefully we can land the right one.”

He has enjoyed an amazing career to date and is approaching 2500

career wins and has amassed 33 Group 1 victories.

The Devonport Cup, including being one of the north west coast’s premium social occasions, is one of the key events in the Ladbrokes Summer Racing Festival.

The festival officially started in Launceston on 21 November when the Barry Campbelltrained Durazzo won the $150,000 Listed Tasmanian Newmarket Handicap.

It will end in Hobart on 28 February when the Group 1 Ladbrokes Tasmania Cup is run for the harness code.

In between these race days, the festival will include the Hobart and Launceston Cups for thoroughbreds (worth $250,000 each), The Chase, the Group 1 Ladbrokes Hobart Thousand and the Ladbrokes Launceston Cup for greyhounds and The Golden Apple and the Hobart and Devonport Cups for harness.

Tasracing chief executive officer Andrew Jenkins said all parts of the state would feature in the festival.

“It is clearly very important that we position ourselves as a

statewide industry to the national market,” he said.

“There will obviously be group race days in our cities, but also Country Cup days at Longford, St Marys, Scottsdale and Burnie.

“More than 10,000 people attend those country race days alone in last year’s festival.

“It is equally important to highlight Tasmania as a racing destination and promote the entertainment aspect of the race days.”

Entain Australia CEO Andrew Vouris said Ladbrokes was a proud racing-first brand.

“We love the sport and we believe in its participants,” he said.

“Our investment in Tasmanian racing is not just about putting our name on a race. It is about helping build a product that engages punters, supports participants and showcases the very best of Tasmanian racing.

The festival also

incorporates the harness yearling sale on 14 February and the Magic Millions yearling sale on 23 February. Both sales will be held at Quercus Park at Carrick.

Just under $80,000 will be given to local sporting and community clubs as part of the Ladbrokes Community Sports Series.

Clubs are invited to enter a draw to be selected to have a horse running in their name in each of the thoroughbred cups.

More than 150 clubs have already registered their interest.

THE Hobart Hurricanes have secured their maiden Women’s Big Bash League title with a commanding eight wicket win over the Perth Scorchers.

An unbeaten 77 from 44 balls by opener

Lizelle Lee proved the difference, as Hobart chased down Perth’s total of 5 for 137 with 30 balls to spare in front of a jubilant home crowd.

Perth opener Beth Mooney looked set early, scoring 33 from

26 balls, but was dropped three times in the powerplay before being bowled by Heather Graham in the 11th over.

Graham also removed Scorchers captain Sophie Devine later in the innings, finishing

with figures of 2 for 26.

Devine, who was dropped on 27, found some rhythm late with two sixes before being stumped in the 17th over.

English spinner Linsey Smith delivered a crucial contribution,

taking 2 for 4 from two economical overs.

In reply, Lee set the tone immediately, striking three boundaries in the opening over. She went on to produce a dominant innings, finishing with 10

fours and four sixes in the highest score ever recorded in a WBBL final.

Lee shared a decisive 77 run partnership with Nat Sciver Brunt, who added 35 from 27 balls, to put the result beyond doubt.

The victory marks the Hurricanes’ first WBBL title in the competition’s 11 year history and follows the club’s men’s side breaking through for their maiden Big Bash League crown last season.

Tasmanian Netball League season dates announced

NETBALL Tasmania has released the 2026 Tasmanian Netball League fixture, kicking off the season on 21 and 22 February.

The 2026 fixture comprises 21 rounds.

Teams will travel across the state to compete in Ulverstone, Launceston and Hobart.

Veteran player Shelby Miller (who does she play for?) said her team’s goal was to maintain a positive training environment.

“The goal is to gel early as a team on and off the court and of course play in the grand final,” she said.

Throughout the season, the league will break for the National Netball Championships in April, the SN Reserves and the Play-In Tournament in June.

The 2026 season has seen the introduction of two additional double header rounds, alongside hosting the Opening Round again.

The two-day opener will be held at Kingsborough Sports Centre and host seven clubs to compete across 12 matches in the U19 and Opens competitions.

South East Suns U19 head coach Mia Bourke said relationship building was a priority.

“Firstly, relationships and connection, culture and trust within a team is important to me, so building those relationships off the court will have a large

impact on the court,” she said.

“We are very fortunate to have the 10 girls we do, because they are all great.

“We also know we must keep working on our skill and fitness, and that will be ongoing, as it is for all teams.”

Later in the season, the Silverdome will host a double header on 23 and 24 May and the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre will host another on 27 and 28 June.
