Ron has used a wheelchair since he was two-and-a-half years old and decided to donate his wheelchair accessible van to Hobart City Mission after saving his money and purchasing a new van in December last year.

Tasmanian Transport Museum back on track IN a boost to heritage rail experiences in the state and to mark the 150th anniversary of Tasmania’s first railway, the Tasmanian Government has announced additional support towards the cost of insurance premiums for Tasmania’s heritage railways.

The State Government assisted with $600,000 to help cover the public liability insurance premiums required to operate visitor rail.

This support, being provided through the Tasmania Association of Tourist Railways, will cover 90 per cent of the cost of premiums in the first year, tapering off to a final 10 per cent over seven years.

“Members of the museum were thrilled to receive news of the Government’s support through yearly subsidies of the Third Party Insurance Premium for the first six years,” Tasmanian

Transport Museum Society president Rod Prince said.

The Tasmanian Government also handed over a new lease to the Tasmanian Transport Museum that provided a further five kilometres of unused rail track between Elwick Road and Mentmore Street to expand the heritage rail operations.

“We have been trying to gain access to that part of the Old South Line between Glenorchy and Chigwell since 2015 and finally we have the missing piece of the puzzle,” Mr Prince said.

“I am confident that when our goals are complete in about two years, we will have created a terrific and popular attraction – not only for the people of southern Tasmania, but also national and international visitors.

“However, there is a lot of work to do before the local residents hear the sound of train whistles

again.”

Mr Prince said the plan was introduce Hobart Heritage Rail in three stages – first to Grove Road then to Berridale Road and finally Mentmore Street.

“Most weekly charters and weekend services will be serviced by our railcar and there will be 10 to 12 weekends a year when one of our two steam engines will be used with our passenger rolling stock,” he said.

To cap off the celebrations, TasRail handed over a 2118/ZA6 heritage locomotive to the museum to ensure its preservation.

Delivered into operation in 1976 the ZA6 was the last English Electric Corporation locomotive built in Australia, the last new locomotive built for Tasmania, the last diesel locomotive built by the company in the world, and is now part of the museum’s permanent collection.

Following a 200 kilometre journey from TasRail’s East Tamar site in Launceston, the Tasmanian Transport Museum Society has been working on the restoration of the 100 tonne locomotive to get it back on track.

“We are going to need more volunteers to help support and run Hobart Heritage Rail including guards, drivers and reception attendants,” Mr Prince said.

“Anybody interested in helping should contact the museum.”

The Tasmanian Transport Museum was officially established in 1962 when four men convinced the Metropolitan Transport Trust to donate a tram for preservation.

The museum opened in 1983 and since then has amassed an impressive collection of historic trains, trams, trolley buses and steam technology exhibits.

and volunteers from the Tasmanian Transport Museum Society are dedicated and passionate about preserving and sharing the pieces of history.

“In the 150th year of rail in Tasmania we are happy to work alongside heritage rail operators to provide high-quality visitor experiences and the chance for Tasmanians to step back into the days when rail was king of transport,”

Speaker of the House of Assembly Sue Hickey said.

Local Member for Clark Elise Archer said heritage railways played a large part in the state’s tourism industry by being draw card attractions for locals and visitors to Tasmania.

“This announcement means the Tasmanian Transport Museum can confidently continue to operate and provide heritage rail experiences

to Tasmanians and visitors alike,” she said.

“I would encourage everyone to visit this great local attraction and experience this magnificent piece of Tasmanian transport history and, of course, enjoy a train ride.”

The Tasmanian Transport Museum is currently open every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.

His donation was motivated through his family’s connection to Hobart City Mission – his youngest sister works at Hobart City Mission, and his father, aunty and uncle volunteer with the organisation regularly.

Ron was excited to join the family in supporting Hobart City Mission and help increase community access for others in southern Tasmania.

“Ron is quite proud of what he’s done and I think it’s a lovely gesture,” Ron’s father Greg Marriott said.

“It’s a real family connection and it’s a great feeling to be able to help and think you’ve made a little bit of a difference.

“It’s amazing to get the opportunity to be able to do something and I know that the van will make a big difference.”

The six-seater van

which has an electric wheelchair ramp, will be used in Hobart City Mission’s Disability Services, as well as at the new Mountain View program.

Mr Marriott said it would change the lives of many residents, as it had helped Ron engage in the community. “it’s a completely different world for him, otherwise he’s just stuck at home and can’t do anything, so it’s total freedom for him,” he said.

Mountain View was launched in October last year and provides permanent supported accommodation for people on the Housing Tasmania priority waitlist.

The van will be booked across both Mountain View and Disability Services area.

“A lot of the people who are living here (Mountain View) are previously homeless and

don’t have a vehicle, so this is an opportunity for them to get out in the community together and build that sense of community at this site,” Hobart City Mission chief executive officer John Stubley said.

“The ability to be able to go to appointments, especially if you already have mobility issues, is just huge.

Currently, Hobart City Mission’s Disability Services only has one wheelchair accessible van, making scheduling between participants more difficult.

Ron’s donated van has already helped residents at Mountain View access specialist off-site services and provided opportunities for residents to connect with one another and support staff in more relaxed informal environments.

Mr Stubley said it was these sorts of out-ofthe-box donations that changed lives in the community.

“This is a very generous donation, and one which we are incredibly grateful for,” he said.

“We’d like to say a very big thank you to Ron, from us, and on behalf of all of those who will benefit from his donation.”

ANZAC Day parade halts its march HOBART’S ANZAC Day parade will not go ahead this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Although there will be no official parade march, the usual Dawn Service and Commemorative Wreath laying service will still go ahead at the Hobart Cenotaph as

smaller, more restricted events.

RSL state president Robert Dick said that after extensive discussion with the ANZAC Day Commemorative Committee, government and defence stakeholders, the decision had been made to scale down events this

year.

“In line with COVID requirements, numbers will be restricted for both the Dawn Service, and the mid-morning wreath-laying ceremony,” he said.

“These will be ticketed events with pre-registration required.

“It is about protecting the health and wellbeing of the individual veterans and all those who normally march, as well as the health of the public who wish to attend.

“We understand that this is difficult for veterans and their families who use this annual

event to connect with old friends and remember the fallen, but it is important we follow health advice and we feel a reduced service is better than no service at all.”

Tasmanians are still encouraged to light up the dawn as they did in 2020, commemorate

from home, or go down to their local RSL service if it’s being run.

Individual RSL sub-branches will determine if services are being run in their own smaller communities based on health advice.

Day commemorations is being held on Wednesday 3 March at Legacy House in Hobart at 5:15pm.

Those wishing to attend are asked to download the Check In Tas app so that a QR code can be scanned on arrival.

Over the past decade, the event has showcased the foods and culture of the many multicultural communities living in Tasmania.

The event was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but is back in 2021 with an exciting new flavour.

To keep the festival safe, fun and inclusive, Glenorchy City Council is developing a program

of events and activities across Harmony Week from 15 to 21 March.

These smaller, COVID-19 safe events, will replace the large, one-day event of previous years, but will still include plenty of opportunities to tantalise the tastebuds.

Mayor of Glenorchy Kristie Johnston said she embraced the opportunities that the multicultural event brought to the city.

The majority of stallholders involved in the event are small community groups who, with the support of council, use it as a platform to share their culture and food with the wider community.

Many groups have even established

businesses in the local area as a result of their positive experience with the festival.

The festival builds the capacity of these vibrant communities within Glenorchy, boosts community pride and promotes understanding and embracing of diversity.

The series of events will take place around Moonah, with venues including the Moonah Arts Centre and the Multicultural Hub. The program will also feature many popular cultural and traditional performances by local performers who work alongside council’s arts

BEREAVED PARENTS’ SUPPORT GROUP Our free group is run by a bereaved mother and is open to people who have lost a child at any age, for any cause and regardless of whether the loss was recent or not. Grandparents and adult siblings are eligible too.

WELL-KNOWN Tasmanian businessman and the founding chair of the Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF) Gerald Loughran (pictured) has been made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the community of Tasmania through business, education and arts organisations.

For close to 20 years, Mr Loughran was managing director of statewide electrical and home furnishing retail business Loughrans Pty Ltd, which was sold to Harvey Norman in 1998.

Mr Loughran has been a director of many well-known Tasmanian businesses and organisations including The Salamanca Arts Centre, University of Tasmania Foundation, Webster Ltd, The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association, and was the chair of The Trust Bank.

Mr Loughran was the founding chair of the TCF from 2000-2009, taking on the role after orchestrating the sale of The Trust Bank and ensuring there was a long-term benefit left to the entire Tasmanian community.

Reflecting on his time of setting up the TCF, he fondly recalled the work involved to negotiate with the Governments of the day and ensuring the legislation passed through both houses of Parliament.

“Unlike the larger mainland states, Tasmania lacked the head offices of major organisations to leverage community

money for important infrastructure and programs,” Mr Loughran said.

“As chair of the Trust Bank, the board looked to similar funds setup in New Zealand when local trust banks had been closed and wanted to ensure we could come up with a sustainable funding model with strong governance and independence at its core.”

In the early days, Mr Loughran was amazed at the amount of need within the many Tasmanian communities, with three to four times as many applications for funds available.

“We knew the need was great, but when the floodgates opened up we quickly learnt that we needed more strategy around focusing on areas of need, such as literacy, early childhood education and community infrastructure,” he said.

“I would have read many thousands of funding applications in my time as chair of the TCF and there is not one town or community that hasn’t benefitted from the Fund in some way – that is something I am very proud of.

“The Fund has been blessed with excellent leadership from the chairs since my time and the continuing high quality of board members who have taken their role so seriously, the TCF is going from strength to strength.

“I’m particularly appreciative of the integrity and professionalism of the

staff at the Fund since its inception until now, they do outstanding work in assisting communities and organisations through the application process.”

Mr Loughran said he did not expect the Order of Australia award and was very humbled.

“What stands out to me is just how many thousands of volunteers there are who tirelessly work in their communities to make it better – their passion and commitment is amazing,” he said.

Current TCF chair Sally Darke said Mr Loughran’s efforts to improve the lives of all Tasmanians could not be overstated and he was a very worthy recipient of the award.

“Under Gerald’s leadership, the Fund was setup under guiding principles to not only ensure it could operate in perpetuity but have the ability to change with our community as their needs change,” she said.

“Looking back to the year 2000 when the Fund commenced compared to now, we have changed so much as a state, and so funding initiatives around workforce engagement and community wellbeing are key to the TCF meeting the needs of Tasmanians today.

“Our response to the COVID-19 pandemic is an example of the TCF being able to adapt quickly and build vibrant communities that are capable and resilient in shaping their future.”

THE Claremont Community Library’s mega book sale will give people the chance to replenish their bookshelves.

Following the successful event last November, volunteers from the library have promised that the book sale on 27 March will be bigger and better.

Volunteer coordinator Jan Southorn said there would be a book to suit everyone at the sale.

“We have been overwhelmed by generous book donations this year alone, but we don’t have space to keep them long,” she said.

“We have a great selection of thrillers, romance and crime for sale, and they’re all reasonably priced.”

Library was recently awarded the 2021 Glenorchy Community Group of the Year.

The library, run by volunteers, has been lending books to the community for nearly 20 years.

Many of the original 20 volunteers are still there, while others have joined along the way.

The dedicated group provides opportunities for the community to socialise and access reading material.

Ms Southorn said this had been particularly important over the past 12 months when many people had been feeling isolated and disconnected.

“It’s a place where people come for a book and stay for a chat,” she said.

“We’re really lucky to have such a wonderful team of volunteers

who love reading and helping our local community stay in touch.”

The library has now grown to more than 450 members and has more than 5,800 books.

The funds from the sale will go back into renewing the library’s collection so it can continue to offer new choices to their readers.

The mega book sale will be held on Saturday 27 March at the Claremont Memorial Hall at 41 Main Road from 9am to 3pm.

The Claremont Community Library is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 11am to 1pm.

It is a community led intiative supported by Glenorchy City Council.

Play shines unique light on PTSD for veterans and first responders VETERANS, first responders and their families will resonate with WHAM Theatre’s play – Foxholes of the Mind – about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Touring nationally in May this year and funded by the Department of Social Services, Bernard Clancy’s stage play will be performed at the Playhouse Theatre in Hobart on Thursday 20, Friday 21 and Saturday 22 May 2021.

Foxholes of the Mind premiered at La Mama theatre in Carlton in 2010 to virtually full houses and toured regional Victoria in 2016.

It had a profound effect on veterans, first responders, wives and families, and was widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.

Playwright and Vietnam veteran Bernard Clancy said Foxholes of the Mind took audiences on a roller-coaster ride as it looked into the lives of Vietnam veteran Frank and his wife, Trish, 30 years after the war.

“I’m very excited to see Foxholes of the Mind go national,” he said.

“It’s a terrific opportunity to highlight PTSD and just how damaging it can be to our community, particularly our defenders and first responders.

“I’m extremely grateful to the Australian Government Department of So-

cial Services for supporting this community initiative.”

Mr Clancy said the play was dealing with a number of themes around trauma and PTSD. “I originally wrote Foxholes of the Mind because I wanted to highlight the tragedy of PTSD, to try to stop the terrible waste and destruction of the human spirit that PTSD entails,” he said.

“Much is being done to try to counter PTSD, not only in the military sense, but also for first responders who deal with trauma, sometimes extreme, on a regular basis.

“Foxholes is a non-clinical story about how a family, and its extended contacts and friends are affected by PTSD. “It shows how it can be identified and managed –

it’s about caring for those who come home from conflict, in our name, with wounds of the mind.

“If the play prompts just one veteran, police member, nurse, firey or ambo with PTSD to seek help, then I’ll be very happy indeed.”

The play will be directed by Wolf Heidecker.

His production company WHAM is the producer on behalf of the Geelong Sub-Branch of the Vietnam Veterans’ Association of Australia.

The cast includes Joanne Davis, Peter Finaly, Adrian Mulraney, Maureen Hartley, Victor Gralak and David Lih. Mr Clancy is also the author of the acclaimed Vietnam War novel ‘Best We Forget’ and the comedy ‘The Zipper’.

Glenorchy City Tennis Club lights up THE Glenorchy City Tennis Club will shine bright thanks to funding from the 2019-20 Sport and Recreation Major Grants Program that will assist fund a lighting project.

The club secured $80,000 from the program as well as additional funding via the Glenorchy City Council as the facility owner.

The need for improved lighting came after club users experienced difficult and unsafe night play due to the lack of adequate court lighting.

The lighting project involved the replacement of the wooden lighting poles, which were unsafe due to rotting, with new metal base-hinge retractable light pole systems,

and new directional lights and reflectors.

The quality, colour, intensity and uniformity of the lights provide consistency of lighting across all playing surfaces and the retractable light pole system provides significant benefits when replacing lights or undertaking maintenance.

This will benefit all participants who use the

court and improve the overall playing experience.

The new lights will also enable the club to continue to host the Glenorchy Open Tournament, as well as have facilities to a standard available for hosting Australian Seniors Tennis and the Australian Masters Games.

THE Rotary Club of Glenorchy has recognised the service provided to the greater Glenorchy community by medical practitioner Dr Don McLeod, awarding him the Vocational Service Community Award.

As a dedicated family practitioner, Dr McLeod has five generations of some families as patients.

He has had a particular focus on the medical care of nursing home residents in the New Town, Moonah, Glenorchy and Claremont areas as well two facilities on the Eastern Shore.

In accepting the Rotary Award, Dr McLeod spoke on the evolution of medical services during his professional life and the growth of the

Glenorchy community since the establishment of his medical practice, Glenorchy Medical Centre, some 35 years ago.

“I’m probably getting near retirement age, but I’ll continue to offer the service I have always offered which is home visits to people who are unable to come to the surgery, and nursing home support to the numerous nursing homes in the Glenorchy area,” Dr McLeod said.

“It’s a rewarding sort of thing to be doing.”

Dr McLeod also has an imposing sporting record, having played 270 games with North Hobart in the Tasmanian Football League, and captaining the senior team in 1975, 1979 and

1980.

He also played 15 games for Tasmania including State of Origin in 1980 in Adelaide.

He also played A grade cricket with North Hobart and University Clubs before it became too difficult to combine cricket, football and medicine.

Rotary Club of Glenorchy president Paul Berry announced the award and spoke warmly on the outstanding service Dr McLeod had provided to the Glenorchy community over a period of 40 years.

“He has particularly catered for the needs of the aged care residents with home visits and a specialised service to most northern suburbs aged

care homes,” he said.

Mr Berry said the award was made in Rotary’s Vocational Service month of January to recognise outstanding service within the local community.

“The year 2021 also marks the centenary of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand,” he said.

“The Rotary Club of Melbourne was chartered on 21 April 1921 and was quickly followed by Sydney, Auckland and Wellington.

“In Tasmania, the Launceston Rotary Club was chartered on 28 February 1924 and the Hobart Rotary Club one day later on 29 February.

“The Glenorchy Club was chartered on 20 April 1964.”

dents who are currently at college and those planning their year 11 program in 2021.

An exciting program at Claremont College, working in conjunction with the uniHUB, is the Claremont College Academic Pathways Program.

It is designed to mentor and support students on a university pathway.

Its goals are to inspire students to aim high, through community engagement and a series of targeted activities, as well as build confidence and develop strategies leading to successful academic study.

In addition to a full suite of TASC courses, Claremont College has an excellent Vocational Education and Training (VET) program managed by experienced staff with long-standing employer networks.

ST Mary’s College marked an exciting milestone in its history by enrolling its first-ever girls-only kindergarten class this year.

A review of Catholic education in Tasmania’s south encouraged this exciting move for St Mary’s College.

While changing to girls-only in early years education is new for St Mary’s, the college has been leading the way in girls’ education for 153 years, having girls-only education from year three to year 12 on the one, central campus.

St Mary’s College principal Helen Spencer said the college was uniquely placed to provide a seamless and comprehensive education that recognised every child’s pathway to personal excellence was different.

“The single pathway for kinder to year 12 is one of our greatest strengths,

allowing for the smooth transition from primary to secondary schooling,” she said.

“While students are navigating the formal school environment, they are also adjusting to the social changes that happen when changing schools and classes.

“Being on the one central site, girls in the junior school get to see their older peers on a day-to-day basis, making the role modelling of older students authentic.

“As they move into the senior school, they are joined by students from other primary schools, which provides for greater diversity and a solid scale for the delivery of a breadth of subjects.”

The lifelong journey of learning can now start even earlier with milangkani, the college’s free early years program which is open to all parents and

carers within the greater community who have a child aged between birth to five years.

Sessions are held on Mondays (term-time only), from 9am to 10:15am and 10:30am to 11:45am by early-childhood educator and program coordinator Meg Kitchen who has more than 20 years of teaching experience.

Numbers tell the story The Dog Grumbler I’VE been researching online again.

Dog statistics are vague but startling.

There are approximately 900 million dogs in the world.

That’s about one dog for every eight or nine humans.

In the UK, there are around 10 million dogs, or one for every six or seven people.

In the US, there are around 90 million, or one for every three or four people.

According to one source, in America they euthanise 670 thousand dogs annually.

That’s one in every 130 or so.

According to another, it’s over 4000 per day, which is around 1.5 million a year.

Apparently, 90 per cent of euthanised dogs in the US have no painful or debilitating condition; they put down 3.5 thousand or so healthy dogs every day — simply because they are not wanted.

We have over 4.5 million dogs in Australia, or one for every five or six people.

Here, we euthanise around 250 thousand dogs every year – that’s one in 18.

Thousands every week.

How about this: Of those 900 million dogs worldwide, how many do you reckon live with specific human families?

How many have a human home?

About 25 per cent.

Three out of four dogs Iive on the fringes of human settlements all over the world.

Sad? I’m not sure – I think they’ve been there for tens of millenia.

Once they were wolves who watched humans as they watched buzzards and taught their young how to find carrion and scraps.

Then humans started cooking food and for some wolves, being a camp follower was an easier life.

By the time they couldn’t live without us they were canis familiaris – camp followers and fringe-dwellers.

This is how most dogs live and always have.

Like humans, some dogs are lucky; they are born into societies and families where they can achieve their full potential, but not all of this 25 per cent are that fortunate.

A camp follower can interact with others of its kind.

For many dogs being taken in by a human family means never having a friend from their own species, never a conversation in their own language.

Dogs have no truck with numbers, they live in and for the moment.

Nothing counts until it moves or has a scent.

They value relationships with individual humans and other creatures, especially dogs, more than

The teeth have been cleaned and removed as required.

Memory Walk and Jog coming to Hobart for first time LOCALS are getting ready for the first Hobart Memory Walk and Jog 2021 for dementia, which will be held on Saturday 13 March 2021 at the Regatta Grounds.

The course is familyfriendly, suitable for all levels of fitness, and there will be prizes for the top fundraisers, as well as raffles, entertainment, food stalls and special guest appearances from Memory Walk and Jog mascot Al the Elephant.

People can choose to take part as an individual or get a team together, and select whether they take part in a two kilometre or six kilometre walk, or an eight kilometre

run.

There are an estimated 11,500 people living with dementia in Tasmania.

With that figure projected to increase to about 16,700 by 2058, events like Memory Walk and Jog play an important role, not only in funding, but also in raising awareness of dementia.

Funds raised through the Memory Walk and Jog series help provide invaluable support, education and resources for people living with dementia in Australia, their carers, families and friends.

There are 17 Memory Walk and Jog events planned across Australia in 2021.

The safety and wellbeing of Memory Walk and Jog participants, volunteers and staff is Dementia Australia’s top priority at these events.

The team is constantly monitoring the evolving situation with COVID-19, and remains in communication with the relevant federal, state and local authorities.

A robust COVID-safe plan has been tailored for each individual event and will be adapted as needed closer to the date of the event.

A FINANCIAL MOMENT Glenorchy Jobs Hub to focus on opportunities and skills for locals TASMANIANS living in Hobart’s northern suburbs will soon have better access and support to find job opportunities in the area’s many developments and flourishing industries, following the launch of the Glenorchy Jobs Hub. “The strength of this particular model is that it is community based and it’s really centred in the Glenorchy community for Glenorchy people,” Ms Johnston said.

“We know that there are people in our community experiencing significant barriers entering into the workforce.

community to ensure that they can access the job opportunities that are coming their way.”

Ms Johnston said a similar model already had proven success, with the South East Employment Hub, delivered by Colony 47 working with South East Regional Development Association and the Trade Training Centre, having placed more than 250 people in employment since it began operating in July 2019.

“It’s about working one on one through coaches to look at the barriers to enter into the workforce,” she said.

“It could be that someone has some issues around qualification or experience – we can help them get that.”

“It might be that someone isn’t quite job ready yet, they need

to improve on their interview skills, they need the right clothes to wear, or they’re not sure what area they would like to work in.”

The foundational work done by council includes the employment of a workforce development facilitator, formation of a local steering committee and expert reference group, finalisation of an up to date Regional Workforce Development Plan, and a brand created for the Jobs Hub. The work paves the way for the next stage which is the establishment of the actual Hub later this year, including a specialist provider, via a tender going out in coming weeks, establishing the physical location and creating an online jobs portal.

Minister for Strategic Growth Sarah Courtney

said the Glenorchy Jobs Hub would help ensure locals directly benefitted from the opportunities in the community and the effects of a strong economy.

“Recent data show the strength in Tasmania’s economic recovery from the effects of COVID-19, with ABS Labour Force data showing that employment in Tasmania is now back to pre-pandemic levels, and we have the lowest unemployment rate of any state,” Minister for Strategic Growth Sarah Courtney said.

“This demonstrates that our plan to rebuild a stronger Tasmania is doing exactly what we need it to – underpinning confidence and providing a strong foundation for continued economic growth.”

Extra financial support coming in March

Children urged to get hearing checked GIVEN the link between hearing loss and delay in speech development is well known, Ability Hearing and Balance is encouraging people to get their child’s hearing tested if they suspect a hearing loss.

Childhood hearing loss can often be hard to pinpoint, with many children suffering from ear or sinus infections that are painless.

Your child may not be able to tell you they are not hearing.

Their hearing can be great one day and not so good another and this makes it difficult for parents to know for sure.

Signs of hearing loss in school aged children include saying “what?” a lot, a sudden drop in grades, and being distracted easily.

At home, you may notice the television up too loud.

These signs are often also associated with other learning disorders, so it is important to have your child’s hearing assessed to rule out hearing loss.

Here are some tips to

support your child when their hearing is down.

Get their attention before speaking.

Being patient when repeating what you said is important.

Children feel frustrated too having to ask for repeats, it is important your child know that it is okay to ask so they don’t become withdrawn.

We want your child to manage their hearing in a positive way, so there are ways to teach your child to ask for repeats more effectively.

Instead of saying “what?”, you can

encourage them to tell you the part of the message that they heard – they only ask for the part they missed.

For example, they could say, “mum, I heard you say we are going for lunch, but I didn’t hear the rest.”

This way, you can concentrate on helping them hear what they missed.

This can go a long way in making things less frustrating for everyone.

Cancer and exercise

By Jo Cordell-Cooper* COMING out of COVID, I thought I might do some professional learning while my private gym was quiet, and I decided to train as a cancer exercise specialist.

I’ve been dealing with quite complex clients for years now and some of them have had cancer, but I felt that to consider working with clients at all stages of cancer required more expertise.

I registered for the most suitable course I could find, the US based Cancer Exercise Training Institute.

It was an eye opening and confronting course, but it has a huge global support network for personal trainers just like me that want to help people with cancer.

Many of the participants were personal trainers with cancer.

Cancer shows no bias, wreaking havoc in the healthiest bodies as well as those with multiple complexities.

Having said that, living a healthy life does reduce your risk of cancer – I’ll talk about that another time.

Exercise has long been recognised as part of a cancer recover regime.

There are many benefits to exercising before and after surgery.

The improved muscle tone and strength improves surgical outcomes.

The same can be said for most surgical procedures, not just for

those with cancer.

The benefits for the person on chemotherapy are impressive.

What kind of exercise is suitable you might ask?

It is not rocket science – the types of exercise that has benefits for the general population is suitable, and can make you fitter, stronger, and help you maintain a healthy body weight.

There are also mental health benefits such as improved mood, reduced fatigue, and a boost in confidence.

Walking, bike riding, weight training, swimming, stretching are all recommended.

The key thing if you are resuming an exercise program following surgery and treatment, is that there will be guidelines to follow and a medical clearance is essential.

Your body may feel different and you may have lost a little confidence in what your body can do.

You may adapt protective postures if you have a surgical scar or amputation.

Working with an appropriately trained and experienced

personal trainer is key at this stage.

Beyond feeling empowered, is the compelling evidence that research repeatedly shows a longer life span and less re-occurrence of cancer in those who exercise regularly, when compared to those who did not.

Being able to maintain a healthy body weight is also key in managing cancer as body fat often harbours sex hormone oestrogen that feeds tumour growth.

It’s a complex condition that often sees women having a hysterectomy which then leads to surgical menopause and bone density issues.

A major part of a treatment regime in this case is weight training.

Teams fight it out at Claremont Bowls Club MORE than 84 people battled it for glory in the Two Bowl Triples at the Claremont Bowls Club in early February.

The significant number was one of the largest amounts of entries in the event to date, and a great day was had by all involved.

The winners of A Grade were Kerry Hill, Noel Hyland and Wayne Clark from New Norfolk, while Keghan Booth, Isaac Maughn and Jack Ellis came second.

In B Grade, the team

of Michael Pursell, Kevin Mann and Michael Berens came first.

Labor Member for Derwent Craig Farrell was one of the main sponsors of the event and said it was an entertaining day for the community.

“The Claremont Bowls Club put on a fantastic event, and I was more than happy to sponsor the competition,” he said.

“With more than 125 members, the Claremont Bowls Club is an important community organisation and has been

a meeting place for people of all ages since 1960.”

Mr Farrell said that members came from across the region, including New Norfolk, Bridgewater, Glenorchy and Moonah.

“People come from across our community to participate in bowls and have a good time,” he said.

“The Two Bowl Triples is just one of many great events the Claremont Bowls Club puts on, and I enjoyed meeting members of the club at this event.”

Arielle Cannell throws down the hammer YOUNG Glenorchy local Arielle Cannell has only been doing hammer throw for about a year, but has already had some outstanding results.

Arielle, now 13 years old, broke the Athletics Tasmania record for under 14 when she was 12 by throwing 49.14 metres – three metres further than the previous record.

Although there is not a recorded Australian record for this event, it is the furthest a 12-yearold in Australia has thrown the hammer on record.

Arielle said she was ecstatic to hold the current record for her age group.

“I couldn’t stop smiling, it was so much fun,” she said.

Arielle is a third generation member of the Eastern Suburbs Athletics Club and said she was enjoying competing in the hammer throw.

“Roger Hosie, my discus and shotput coach, said that I was a good build for a hammer thrower, so I decided one day to go in there

with his daughter, Rachel Hosie, to coach me and it ended up sticking with me,” she said.

“I have a wonderful

coach, and I enjoy the tips she gives me and having a laugh.

“I enjoy learning new things about it and

making new techniques with it, as well as just enjoying the environment with all the other people who throw hammer.”

Arielle has also been doing discus and shotput since she was in under six and recently broke an Athletics Tasmania record

in the under 13 discus with a throw just over 32 metres.

“I want to become a good sports woman and

a good person,” she said.

“My goal is to hopefully break the Australian record for hammer throw one day.”

Fighting spirit expands to northern suburbs A GROWING Tasmanian judo gym now has a place to call its own after moving into the YMCA Centre in Glenorchy.

Seishin Martial Arts has revamped a room at the YMCA Hobart to create a permanent gym after previously hiring out the dojo at the Sandy Bay UniGym and the Howrah Community Centre.

Seishin Martial Arts was originally established

by Carla and Lewis Willing to support people living with an intellectual, sensory or physical disability in no limits judo, but has recently expanded to coaching and training people in

mainstream judo.

“A lot of our no limits judo guys are progressing to the point where they can integrate into mainstream judo classes, which meant there was a space for us to start classes,” Ms Willing said.

“We’re now located centrally here in Glenorchy and only here.

“This has meant that we could open up judo in the Glenorchy area to anyone and everyone, and we’ve also started judo in school programs around the state.”

The new space provides Seishin with a bigger training space and was customised by

a painter who painted the logo and the club’s slogan on the wall – “the fighting spirit has no limits.”

AllCare Physiotherapy sponsored the mats for the gym.

“We’ve now got access anytime we want, so we’re able to run private classes, group classes and fitness classes if we want to – it’s a really flexible space for us,” Ms Willing said.

Ms Willing said the club had just hit 51 members and was continuing to grow.

“All our players from Sandy Bay and Howrah came over with us and we

haven’t lost any players at all, which is wonderful to see how committed to the team they are – we’ve also recruited 16 new players this year already,” she said.

“This has just bumped us into the second largest judo club in Tassie and I think we’re now the

largest disability support judo gym in Australia.”

Twenty-year-old Phoebe Ladlow has been doing judo since she was 14, but has only been with Seishin since midAugust last year.

She has recently transitioned from no

limits judo to mainstream judo after showing significant progress.

“I really enjoy the throws and holds,” Ms Ladlow said.

“It’s helped me become more encouraging to other because I’m planning on

teaching the little kids.”

Cricketing community comes together at Blundstone

THE cricketing community came together at Blundstone Arena for a day of competition and fun that showcased diversity and inclusion.

The Community Cricket Celebration Day was held on Sunday 7 February and featured three games.

The first game was between the Southern and Northern All Abilities teams, with the Southern team coming out on top.

The players have intellectual disabilities, but play for mainstream clubs.

Southern All Abilities player Blake Bonnitcha said it was a great experience to play on Blundstone Arena.

“So many unbelievable players have played on that cricket pitch and on the ground, so it was amazing to play, get a decent score, get a wicket, have some fun and get the win,” he said.

The second game was a high-quality contest between an Indigenous Invitational XI and

a Cricket Tasmania Pathways XI. Normally the Indigenous team would travel to Alice Springs to the National Indigenous Championships, but COVID-19 restrictions stopped that.

This game was an opportunity for them to play against some really high quality opposition.

“It was a really good opportunity to play for your state and play for your culture – you don’t get the opportunity every day of the week, so when it does come along, you take it with two hands,” Indigenous XI player Jack Callinan said.

The day was capped off by the 2021 Hurricanes Champions League grand final, a significant event in the cricket calendar and a milestone for the Intercultural Sports League (ICSL).

The Hurricanes Champions League is a partnership between the Hobart Hurricanes and the ICSL that was established in 2017 and supported through the Hurricanes Foundation, with 14 teams playing in

Indigenous XI captain Callan Morse at the crease.

This was the first time the grand final was held at Blundstone Arena, with previous years’ grand finals being held at KGV in Glenorchy.

The final was played between the KLM Kings and the Tasmanian Punjabi Sports Club, with the KLM Kings coming out on top.

“The competition is getting better and bigger with every year because more people are migrating from different states as well,” KLM Kings captain Umair Butt said.

“I think ICSL is one of the competitions that has brought all the communities together to one platform and is somewhere you can actually make friends – it’s not only about cricket, it’s much bigger.”

The ICSL is an incorporated not-forprofit organisation founded by Mohan Mattala and Raj Chopra.

It aims to reduce isolation experienced by refugee and migrant communities in Tasmania through participation in sport.

“The competitors are players from diverse cultural backgrounds including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Syria and Australia,” said ICSL cofounder Mr Mattala.

In 2020, the ICSL was granted $2,865 from the Tasmanian Government’s Communities, Sport and Recreation’s COVID-19 Sport and Recreation Grants to assist with items needed to return to play safely including hand sanitiser, wipes and cricket balls.

“Tasmania is a culturally, religiously and linguistically diverse state, with a long history of migration,” local Liberal Member Elise Archer said.

“I commend Raj, Mohan and John for having the initiative and sheer determination to pursue their dream of socially integrating our culturally diverse communities through sport and cricket in particular.

“It’s great to see the rapid growth of the number of teams competing from nine teams in 2017 to 14 this season.”

“As a supporter of the ICSL since its inception, it has been my absolute pleasure to be involved in supporting and sponsoring this organisation, knowing how important it is for people to connect with and support each other.”

“It’s part of the community and it’s a great asset for the Tasmanian community, so every opportunity that we can get to get anyone who loves the game and wants to play cricket the opportunity to play here is really important,” he said.

“We’re really keen to make sure that cricket is a sport for all and celebrating all of these different groups who enjoy our game is really important to us.”

TASMANIA has punched above its weight in the recent 2020 Ice Skating Australia (ISA) Online National Figure Skating Competition, with a number of top 10 and podium finishes.

Due to the cancellation of the 2020 National Figure Skating Competition, Ice Skating Australia ran the online benchmark competition where four national level skaters were selected to represent Tasmania against the rest of the country in December 2020.

Amy Pailthorpe was the pick of the Tasmanian competitors after winning the Adult Gold division.

Kimberly Gentile finished second in the Intermediate Ladies, Chloe Anderson finished sixth in the Adult Silver Ladies and Amy Greenland-Wells finished 10th in the Adult Silver Ladies.

“These skaters conducted themselves with the upmost integrity and performed outstanding routines during what

has been an extraordinary tough year,” Figure Skating Association of Tasmania treasurer Elizabeth Gentile said.

“Most of Tasmania’s national level skaters have not seen their coaches since January last year and have not had any full-sized ice training during this time.

“To receive these results shows the determination of Tasmanian skaters and their unshaken commitment to their sport.”

It was the first time the athletes were able to compete in a national tournament at the Glenorchy Ice Skating Rink as ISA relaxed rink size allowances so all states could compete.

The skaters’ routines were filmed by an official before they were sent to judges around Australia.

“In Tasmania, we only have one ice rink that is quarter of the size of an Olympic surface,” Ms Pailthorpe said.

“Therefore, we experi-

ence a greater difficulty competing against those with Olympic sized surfaces on the mainland, as we have to restrict our power and speed so that we can fit our routines onto our rink.

“Winning this competition was very significant, I proved to myself that I can be adaptable with the challenges that we face in Tasmania.”

Ms Pailthorpe, who has been skating for 13 years, said she was shocked and amazed to win a national competition.

She has previously won the Adult Gold Ladies at the 2019 Australian Figure Skating Championships and has been the state champion for her level for seven years in a row.

“Figure skating is a tough sport, and it definitely was not made easier when I could not train for three months due to COVID lockdown,” she said.

“It is difficult as you need to have correct

technique, speed, power, flexibility, and performance value when you skate – when it all comes together, it is most rewarding.

“It was a major confidence boost and has proved to myself that I have the potential to do more.”

Ms Pailthorpe said figure skating was a sport on the rise in Tasmania, which was evidenced in the results from the national competition.

“Figure skating doesn’t have much attention in the sporting world in Tasmania, so it is a major achievement for each of us to be able to not only compete, but some of us place in the top half and finish in a podium position,” she said.

“We have seen a great increase in the learn to skate program in the state and hope that it continues to grow so that we can share our love of figure skating with more Tasmanians.”

Tolosa Park BMX development racing ahead

A NEW $750,000 BMX track at Tolosa Park has received a boost after the Glenorchy City Council was one of the successful applicants of a 2020-21 Improving the Playing Field Grants Program to go towards its development.

Under the program, grants of between $25,000 and $250,000 were available to local government and sporting

organisations for projects that develop or improve functional and inclusive amenities. $250,000 was awarded to the Glenorchy City Council towards the development of the new BMX track.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Jane Howlett said the current BMX facility at Berridale had its limitations and was restricted to club

members only.

“I am confident that the new track at Tolosa Park will also encourage more Tasmanians to take up the Olympic sport while providing young people in the area a safe community space to be active,” she said.

“In 2019, Southern City BMX hosted a round of the National Series with riders from across Australia

competing, and the new track will make the area a prime candidate for attracting more national, and potentially international, BMX events to Tasmania.”

Construction on the Tolosa Park BMX track will begin soon and is expected to be completed by January 2022.

projects across Tasmania, totalling more than $3.7 million will benefit from the large grants stream, with the Grants Program also providing assistance in supporting the state’s building and construction industry and local jobs,” Ms Howlett said.
