HOBART City Mission’s newest supported housing program, Mountain View, is providing a home for people who have been

experiencing hardship and homelessness in southern Tasmania.

The program, which provides 31 living units

for people on the Housing Tasmania priority waitlist, is now at 50 per cent capacity, with 100 per cent capacity expected by the

end of January 2021.

“It’s been able to give me structure and a place to call my own for the first time in a long time,” she said.

“It’s giving me the dignity to be allowed to say I have a place of my own and am independent, but it also provides a lot of support.

“We’re working on community activities where we get to trust our fellow residents and we can start working with the outer community so we can feel like we’re participating in

the community again.”

Hobart City Mission chief executive officer John Stubley said the purchase and initial funding of the program was thanks to the generous support of the community, the State Government and a number of significant bequests.

“We are incredibly grateful to the late Robert Sylvester who recently left a significant bequest to the Mountain View program,” he said.

“These funds allow us to provide holistic, client-focused support to

the people moving into Mountain View and helps to fund the ongoing costs of the program.”

Mountain View is located at the old Balmoral Motor Inn in Glenorchy.

Hobart City Mission purchased the property in October with the State Government committing to $2.1 million worth of funding and Hobart City Mission contributing a further $2.2 million for the purchase.

Hobart City Mission will fund the ongoing program costs, which includes 24/7 support staff.

At the ceremony, among the many students receiving awards, the college celebrated five of its students who were recipients of the prestigious 2020 ICAS Medal for placing first in the state in a specified academic assessment area.

This was a wonderful achievement for the students as they competed with more than one million student entries from more than 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent skill-based assessment test for primary and secondary school students.

It is an annual assessment conducted by UNSW Global and caters to students from year two to year 12.

The six ICAS competitions are English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling, Writing and Digital Technologies.

Achievement in Mathematics across Dominic College was particularly evident with Harry Breslin (year 10), Joel Richards (year seven) and Hayley Bukowiecki (year three) all being recipients of ICAS first place medals in the state for Mathematics.

The 2020 college vice captain Cassandra McLoughlin (year 10) was awarded her medal for English and Vincent Davey (year two) was awarded his medal for

Spelling.

“Both Harry and Cassandra have been consistent winners of ICAS state medals across their time at Dominic and I anticipate they will do very well in their senior studies at Guilford Young College.” Dominic College principal Beth Gilligan said.

“Winning an ICAS medal is a significant accomplishment for these young people, especially amidst a year of unprecedented challenges.

THE Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) has reopened following its closure in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, unveiling a major revamp of its semi-subterranean galleries and two new outdoor works of art.

More than 350 highlights from David Walsh’s extensive personal collection are on display.

The gallery spaces have been transformed to showcase the treasure trove of ancient, modern and contemporary art, with hidden gems that have never been

shown at MONA before, alongside many favourites – old and new.

Newly opened is ‘House of Mirrors’, an art installation composed of a labyrinth of seemingly endless mirrors.

It was created by Australian artists Christian Wagstaff and Keith Courtney and is the world’s largest travelling mirror maze.

Visitors can also view, and climb on, a giant bronze sculpture by American artist Tom Otterness.

The MONA Ferry has resumed its service from Brooke Street Pier to the museum – tickets

are $15 until the end of January.

BEREAVED PARENTS’ SUPPORT GROUP Our free group is run by a bereaved mother and is open to people who have lost a child at any age, for any cause and regardless of whether the loss was recent or not. YOUTH at Karadi Aboriginal Corporation showcased a series of artwork that connected to the land and Country as the result of a six-week program.

The youth worked with Aboriginal artist Jaye Gangalidda as part of the Deadly Choices initiative to educate them about making healthy choices in drug and alcohol matters.

The Deadly Choices initiative was a partnership between Karadi Aboriginal Corporation and The Link Health Youth Service in Hobart, and was funded by the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Council Tasmania.

“The exhibition and program was about working with youth who are disadvantaged and had been struggling during COVID with isolation, mental health and substance misuse,” Ms Gangalidda said.

“There was a real focus on building confidence, giving the youth new skills, and building some knowledge around culture and their identity.

“We know that a good strong sense of self, particularly cultural sense, is good in building resilience to drugs, isolation and mental health issues.”

Ms Gangalidda has about 40 years of expe-

rience working with First Nations people across the area of mental health and wellbeing.

“I’ve always used art and storytelling to help with these issues,” Ms Gangalidda said.

“We went out into Country and looked at the patterns, textures, colours, forms and shapes.

“I then got them to reflect on their spiritual sense and connection to Country to find inspiration to create their prints.”

The youth engaged in a number of different forms of art, including oil pastels, collage, painting and pen design.

“It calmed a lot of people down that came in a bit crazy – when you come in and sit down you’re actually doing work so it’s quite peaceful and calms you down a lot more,” 15-year-old Ruby Millard said.

“It helped me come out of my shell a bit more and gave me some extra confidence.”

Fourteen-year-old Braddon Stacey said he enjoyed connecting with his Indigenous culture.

“It represents just how free our minds can be because society always tells us you can’t do that,” he said.

Free ‘Hep C’ tests available in Glenorchy ANGLICARE Tasmania is inviting people who may be at risk of having or developing Hepatitis C to its Glenorchy office for a free test during January and February.

Part of the Tasmanian Government’s Eliminate Hepatitis C outreach program, the simple test can set you on your way to getting and staying well.

Testing is performed by a trained nurse from Sexual Health Service Tasmania in a confidential environment.

Staff from Anglicare’s Needle and Syringe Program are also on hand to provide people with additional support on request.

It is possible to live with the virus without feeling sick, so the earlier you seek treatment the better.

Hepatitis C is a bloodborne virus that damages a person’s liver.

Transmission can occur if injecting equipment is shared or you get a tattoo done with equipment that hasn’t been sterilised, but it’s important to understand

that any blood-to-blood contact carries this risk.

Testing and treatment has been life-changing for Anglicare client David (not his real name).

David attributed his fatigue, joint pain, poor appetite and depression to simply getting older.

When it was suggested that he might have Hepatitis C, David became very anxious about his health and what people would think.

“Getting tested and

then accessing treatment when my test came back positive was so quick and easy,” he said.

“Because the whole process was confidential and professional, I didn’t feel judged.

“Now I feel much better in myself and I don’t have to worry about long-term damage to my liver anymore.

“It’s also good to know that I can’t pass the virus on to someone else.”

The free testing for

Hepatitis C will occur at Anglicare’s Glenorchy office on 436 Main Road, Glenorchy, every Friday from 10am to 4pm in January until the end of February 2021 (the clinic is closed between noon and 12:30pm).

People will need to bring their Medicare card and provide a contact phone number.

Running classes in six locations around Hobart for kids and youth aged six to 26 years, the O’Grady Drama curriculum is specifically created to enhance the social and emotional development of children of all ages.

Originally developed in Perth, Western Australia, the original Helen O’Grady teaching methods continue today to foster a supportive and nurturing environment and are aimed at building confidence, self-esteem, speech skills and teamwork.

Performance skills such as improvisation,

characterisation, voice and stage work are imbedded in the dynamic, fun weekly classes which are run by trained and experienced teachers.

Students have opportunities to perform for family and friends throughout the year, specifically in a fully-staged in-theatre production at the culmination of each year, held at the Playhouse Theatre in Bathurst Street.

Older students, aged 16 to 26, working on building advanced acting skills, are part of the On Cue Performance Ensemble.

This dedicated class prepare for an annual full-length theatrical production at the Peacock Theatre each year.

These productions give students the incredible experience of performing to a very

high standard in a public season of shows.

Sixteen classes are running per week at six studio locations including Bellerive, Lindisfarne, Kingston, New Town and West Hobart, new students are always welcome.

Students gain the most benefit from attending the full year’s progressive program from term one to four and by participating in various in-class performances.

2021 HILLIARD STUDENTS THINK BIG

By Grace Matteo, Grade seven, Hilliard Christian College LAST year in Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), we learnt about entrepreneurs and how they have started their businesses from nothing and built it up to become big companies.

Miss Knight, our HASS teacher, assigned us a task to research an entrepreneur and how they inspired us.

After researching lots of different entrepreneurs, I got inspired by how they were just ordinary people like me with a vision to use their interests to create a business that was successful.

I am only 13 and as such, I am not yet old enough to work, but I am never too young to start my own business.

My peer, Joelle Vaccianna, and I brainstormed different ideas of how we could start our own business.

We used the skills and knowledge taught to us in HASS and applied it in this process.

The business I created is called “I Make It - You Bake It,” a simple yet effective concept.

jars with ingredients for popular baked goods such as fudge brownies and cookie recipes.

The idea is that customers purchase a jar for a gift or for themselves and they add the wet ingredients from the label and bake it.

Since starting my business and creating an online Facebook page (@IMakeItYouBakeIt), I have been overwhelmed by the support from everyone.

I have since gone on to create a homemade drinks collection and Christmas range.

At the request of customers, I have also diversified to include postage options for outer state customers.

It has been such a great

experience and I am excited to see where my business will go.

Joelle has since gone on to create his own business called ‘Joelle’s Creations’ where he makes bath bombs and candles.

He is currently in the process of establishing mediums in which to sell his products both online and locally.

Through word of mouth, he has already established a customer base.

It has been fun challenging each other to reach certain milestones with our businesses.

I have really enjoyed studying this topic at school and hope that our ideas may inspire other young teens to start their own business too.

GROWING AND CONNECTING WITH OUR ENVIRONMENT

Dominic College principal Beth Gilligan and a few lucky students enjoyed trying out the newly completed Dominic College K-2 Precinct learning spaces.

AS Dominic College heads into 2021, phase one of a significant building development has been recently completed and is ready to welcome students for the new academic year.

The college’s kindergarten – year two precinct project provides new, vibrant, and contemporary learning spaces to cater for the increasing enrolment demand at the college.

Dominic is set on a picturesque, 28-hectare Glenorchy campus and currently caters for students with diverse interests and passions from kindergarten to year 10.

The college has a reputation for providing high-quality education in the northern suburbs of Hobart since it was established in 1946.

Demand for places at the college continues to grow.

“As Dominic College develops new, as well as proven ways of effective teaching, we need to ensure our indoor and

outdoor spaces provide the best means to facilitate authentic 21st century learning,” Dominic principal Beth Gilligan.

“Although we continue to grow in student numbers, we are committed to maintaining smaller class sizes and providing quality spaces as well as quality teachers who know how to configure our spaces to maximize student growth and achievement.”

Upon completion of all stages of the K-2 precinct, the development will provide 12 additional state-of-the-art primary classrooms, as well as landscaped play zones, and include many innovative features.

The slippery dips, attached to each classroom, will transport students from inside their classrooms to the creative recreational spaces.

These are a unique design feature by the college’s architect, Elvio Brianese of Liminal.

“Elvio Brianese is an Old Scholar of Dominic,

and one of the many design features of our shared vision with Elvio are the slippery dips that will be a contemporary expression of our Salesian tradition where the playground and classroom intersect and become an exciting construct of what this looks like in the 21st century,” Ms Gilligan said.

The outdoor learning infrastructure of the new precinct opens from the interior of the classrooms through walled glass doors and includes large, covered spaces attached to the classrooms with outdoor seating and extensive soft-fall areas for play.

Additional outdoor play spaces will also be incorporated into the new precinct.

These will include a new climbing structure, a riverbed with a water pump, and plenty of natural landscaping that encourage exploration and nature play.

The Dominic kindergarten team will continue in 2021 to conduct its

Bush Kinder program which capitalises on the many natural resources of the college, including a much-loved creek that runs through the property and is the focus of an on-going student conservation project.

The college’s Early Years teachers collectively take advantage of the bushlands of the college to further enrich the curriculum.

“The grounds at Dominic College are amazing and students can connect with, observe and explore the natural world with ease and without having to travel off-site,” Ms Gilligan said.

Six of the college’s spacious classrooms will be completed before the start of the 2021 school year, ready for the return of students.

The remaining six classrooms will be completed before the start of the 2022 school year with the new Before and After School Care Centre planned to be completed in 2023.

Christmas fun at Golden Wattle Café THE Golden Wattle Café celebrated their first Christmas party on Friday 18 December, with there being a vibrant and joyful atmosphere experienced by all.

A morning tea of mince pies, sandwiches, a scrumptious pavlova and cakes was served.

“We were fortunate enough to have the Silver-

tones Chorus entertain us for almost an hour with a variety of Christmas and other songs, bringing back wonderful memories to most of us,” Golden Wattle Café founder Agnes Frith said.

The Golden Wattle Café caters for people with dementia and their carers, and is open between 10:30am and 12:30pm

on the first three Thursdays of each month.

Being an Honoured Friend of The Salvation Army can help someone in need.

A SALVATION ARMY ‘HONOURED FRIEND’ DOROTHY was inspired to leave a gift in her Will after a childhood introduction to The Salvation Army followed by a later challenge in adulthood.

Dorothy’s mum would take her to the local park on Sunday afternoons to hear the band play.

“I was always fascinated by the shiny brass instruments,” Dorothy said.

“Whenever I think about that, I re-experience the lovely feeling their music engendered in me.”

However, it wasn’t until she was an adult and doing some soul-searching that Dorothy returned to The Salvation Army.

“I was made to feel very welcome and within about half an hour, I knew The Salvation Army was where I belonged,”

she said.

Dorothy made a commitment and has been an official member for more than a decade.

“I am very proud to belong to The Salvation Army,” she said.

Dorothy has been involved with The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal and other fundraising initiatives, as well as volunteered at Christmas time with hampers and during natural disasters.

“What has struck me most with the Sallies (Salvos) is their downto-earth attitude and their humanitarian care – they reach out with no judgment,” Dorothy said.

“The Salvation Army ethos relates to, and revolves around, people.”

Having seen the Salvos in action – caring for

people in need – Dorothy decided to include a gift to The Salvation Army in her Will.

Dorothy said she was proud to be part of the special community of supporters called Honoured Friends.

“I hope my bequest to The Salvation Army will provide rehabilitation for somebody who desperately needs support with their drug and/or alcohol addiction,” she said.

“Addiction is a cunning, baffling and powerful disease.

“Rehabilitation can make the difference between living or dying.”

Dorothy spoke from experience about the challenges of addiction.

“There’s been a lot of trauma” she said.

“Wine ultimately

became my solace, much to my detriment.”

Today, Dorothy calls herself a “recovering alcoholic” and has been sober for almost 20 years.

The Salvation Army values supporters like Dorothy and those who have generously included a gift in their Will.

This gift ensures Salvos will always be there to help Australians in crisis.

“It’s satisfying for me to know that my bequest will be used to further The Salvation Army’s rehabilitation services and save precious lives,” Dorothy said.

$3.29 million to flow for COVID community relief THE Tasmanian Community Fund’s (TCF) COVID-19 specific funding round has been assessed with 28 organisations sharing in $3.29 million in large and medium grants.

Funding recipients include The St Giles Society’s for a Disability Innovator Hub and Colony 47’s clinical mental health support program for southern Tasmania’s most vulnerable young people.

Other grants were provided to the Australian Dental Health Foundation for the provision of free dental care to disadvantaged Tasmanians and the Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service for free legal support to migrant women on temporary visas who are victims/ survivors of family violence.

TCF chair Sally Darke said that as the needs of the Tasmanian people continued to grow and change during the pandemic, the fund had adapted to meet the needs in this

unprecedented time.

“The TCF introduced the COVID-19 specific funding round to assist community groups and organisations realign their work and adapt to the new normal because we know many community groups and individuals can help lead Tasmania through the recovery,” she said.

Principal lawyer for the Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service Patrick O’Connor said the purpose of its project was to set up and operate a legal clinic to provide free migration legal advice and casework for migrants who were victims and survivors of family violence currently on temporary visas.

“For many migrant women, a temporary visa status is used as a means to coerce them to remain in a violent relationship,” he said.

“The ability to access free legal migration advice can provide some women with the opportunity to leave a violent relationship and be able to access the safety and support they need in the

The TCF took steps in July to assist Tasmanians during the COVID-19 pandemic calling for applications for projects which responded specifically to the impacts of COVID-19 on local communities.

Grants were split into

three streams and were developed based on community feedback: • Support – supporting and meeting the needs of vulnerable people to ensure they are not left behind as a result of COVID-19.

• Connection – creating spaces and programs/processes

to enable individuals and communities to reconnect and rebuild the social fabric of communities.

• Rebuild – providing individual and organisational capacity building including options for realigning work and directions for the

“new normal” and beyond.

More than $200,000 was provided to small applicants with funding announced in October taking the total awarded in the Round to $3.5 million.

The TCF was established in 1999 following the sale of a community asset.

An independent funding body, the Fund provides grants to community organisations that enable Tasmanian communities to be vibrant, capable and resilient in shaping their future.

To date the TCF has provided more than $114 million to the Tasmanian community.

Zinc opens new pathways BIG hART’s award-winning ode to the humble farm shed is being re-imagined, with a partnership between Nyrstar and North West Support Services resulting in the development of the The Acoustic Life of Zinc.

The Acoustic Life of Zinc promotes inclusion and creativity by collaborating with clients of North West Support Services who are musicians and artists, but have limited chances to show their work.

The program is the next step for the Acoustic Life of Sheds, which was presented at Ten Days on the Island in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

The event created sound works in 15 shed venues across the north

west coast and won the 2018 APRA/AMCOS Art Music Award for Excellence in a Regional Area.

“Our partnership with Nyrstar and North West Support Services will see artists create new music inspired by the industrial hidden world of Nyrstar’s Zinc Works in Hobart,” Big hART chief executive officer Scott Rankin said.

Through the project, electronica artist Paul Corfiatis, graphite artist and poet Jacob Rish, and bassist Curtis Poke received mentoring from guitarist and composer Aaron Hopper in music and innovative sound design.

“I came down and recorded about 270 different sounds of the factory,

from the conveyor belt, to squeaks, to harmonic filters and all sorts of things like that, and I put it together as a musical sound track,” Mr Hopper said.

The sounds were then transformed by the artists and were accompanied by images to create an installation inside the Nyrstar Zinc Works on the Derwent River.

“People living with autism tend to not really have their voice heard and people don’t recognise just how rich an internal imaginative and creative life they have,” Mr Hopper said.

The project explored the sound, tone and colour of zinc, and zinc ingots by utilising looped technology and vision.

In this way, Acoustic Life of Zinc aimed to express the hidden stories of the zinc works, which has been part of the Hobart community for more than 100 years.

The creative development also included photographing current workers, adding portraiture to the project and revealing the human side of the zinc works.

“Art and creativity has always been part of the work of North West Support Services and we believe it has an essential role to play in creating a more inclusive world,” North West Support Services general manager Neal Rodwell said.

Choir brings hope to community LOCALLY based Choir of High Hopes provided some Christmas cheer to the public during its only public performance of 2020.

The choir performed two back-to-back sets in Hobart’s Elizabeth Street Mall after a tough year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Since its inception in

2007, the Choir of High Hopes has traditionally rehearsed indoors every Tuesday afternoon between February and December.

However, the

pandemic forced the choir into hibernation until the Glenorchy City Council came to the rescue by offering the use of its Tolosa Park amphitheatre from

September until the end of the year.

Members of the choir were excited to sing everyone’s favourite Christmas tunes in what was the choir’s

14th consecutive carols concert in the Mall.

The Choir of High Hopes’ first concert was the Mall Christmas concert in 2007, and 2020’s ensemble

included some members from that day – some who had not missed a concert.

The choir’s membership is between 40 and 50 people.

New market showcases cultural diversity and ingenuity A NEW, vibrant market showcasing the ingenuity and skill of people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds,

is set to open at the Moonah Multicultural Hub in March 2021.

Multicultural food, clothing, arts and crafts and massage, as well as

an opportunity to enjoy a traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony, will be available at the new market.

An initiative of

CatholicCare Tasmania’s Safe Haven Hub, and with funding from the Tasmanian Government’s Multicultural Grants Program, the Moonah Bazaar Project helped to establish sustainable microbusinesses operated by refugees, asylum seekers, recently arrived migrants and others identifying as being of a CALD background.

A group of refugees and people from multicultural backgrounds were chosen from a field of applicants who lodged an expression of interest in the project in July 2020.

They received small

business training from mentors who have at least five years’ experience in operating their own business, and from those working in the finance, legal and marketing professions.

The market is being established in collaboration with the community development officer at the Multicultural Hub in Moonah.

It is anticipated the market will become sustainable and ultimately run by the community, for the community.

The market will be held on the first Saturday of every month commencing on 6 March

EQUAL Opportunity Tasmania recently hosted the Human Rights Week 2020 Tasmanian Awards to celebrate Tasmanian individuals and organisations who have demonstrated acts of kindness and compassion towards fellow Tasmanians and made a positive difference in the community.

Moonah’s Zafira Fine Foods owner Kirsten Singleton and the not-forprofit Friends of Zafira Group were recognised for their commitment to the Hazara community.

The Zafira journey began in 2017 when Ms Singleton purchased a takeaway store in Moonah with Amin Safa, president of the Hazara Community of Southern Tasmania, with a plan to introduce Tasmanians to food from Afghanistan and create employment for people from the Hazara community.

Originally operating as the Gormanston Road Takeaway, Ms Singleton and Mr Safa turned the takeaway shop into a place of opportunity for many people by providing training and employment for them.

Over three years, the takeaway has transformed into Zafira Fine Foods, and along with its sister not-forprofit, Friends of Zafira, has provided employment to more than 25 people, as well as training opportunities and social supports – food being the connection to learn, share culture and forge friendships.

Former refugees, current refugees and students on temporary work visas have all worked at the café.

who now runs a successful tiling business in Moonah.

“There are many barriers preventing access to work, training and education for people arriving as refugees from Afghanistan,” Ms Singleton said.

“Especially if they have been denied access to education as has happened to so many Hazara people.

“The normal challenges of migration are amplified by experiences of trauma, systemic discrimination and persecution of Hazaras in Afghanistan which is still continuing.

“Going through these experiences, combined with a lack of English and opportunity, creates social isolation for people who have arrived from Afghanistan.”

“The team at Zafira Café are committed to developing awareness in the broader Tasmanian community of the experiences of refugees and building a greater understanding of Afghan culture and traditions.”

There is now a Zafira Cultural Experience for members of the general public and school children

to participate in, as well as cooking classes, a community garden run by volunteers from Friends of Zafira, and community evenings which aim to bring the local Moonah community together.

Future plans for Zafira includes employing a bi-cultural worker and interpreter to deliver a range of projects targeted at improving employment opportunities, personal wellbeing and social inclusion of former refugees.

On a daily basis, Zafira Fine Foods offers delicious flavours from Afghanistan and the Silk Road region, reflecting the diverse influences and cuisine of the region.

Zafira is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.

ABORIGINAL, INDIGENOUS AND AFRICAN MEN TELL STORIES OF COUNTRY A BAND of brothers from across Tasmania, Australia and the world will come together to tell stories of Aboriginal, Indigenous and African men.

‘Brothers of Country’ is a special music and art event at Moonah Arts Centre in January.

“This project has been in the making for years,” event co-producer Josh Langford said.

“Since the beginning, we have wanted to tell the stories of men, particularly from African and Aboriginal communities, and how they find healing and connection on Country.

“From time together on remote locations, making films, songs and telling stories, the band of brothers will be taking over the Moonah Arts Centre in January.

“The result is an exhibition of video and art, a musical performance series — these are all telling these really important, healing stories.”

The exhibition is open from 15 January to 13 February 2021 and is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to

2pm.

Artists yarn is on 6 February at 11am.

Entry to the exhibition and the artist yarn are free.

The music events are on Saturday 30 January and Sunday 31 January, with entry being $10.

Tickets will be released on Moonah Arts Centre’s website at moonahartscentre.org. au in January.

HORSE FOR A CAUSE

IT takes a special kind of horse to join the herd at Riding for the Disabled Association of Tasmania Inc. (RDAT), and those horses aren’t always easy to find.

Many of the horses at RDAT are getting old, so RDAT are raising funds through a new campaign, ‘Horse for a Cause’ to find the perfect addition to the stable.

RDAT is a not-forprofit organisation that provides equine therapy to Tasmanians living with disabilities, with there being a centre located in Glenorchy at 500 Kalang Avenue.

Each week, more than 80 volunteers at RDAT centres donate their time and energy to assist more than 60 children and adults with disabilities to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of horse related activities.

Celebrating community with Christmas cheer

Riding in the RDAT program is an accredited activity.

Due to the required temperament and experience of the horses who are able to participate in RDA programs, older horses are often part of the program, but this also means that the herd ages fast.

RDA Tasmania executive officer and state coaching coordinator Claudia Nevah said younger, well-schooled horses with experience and an unflappable temperament were preferred.

“It’s important for the future of the program to find horses who can be involved for many years to come, and not have to be retired only a few years after they arrive,” she said.

“RDA horses are one of the three key ‘ingredients’ for our program, to-

gether with our volunteer RDA accredited coaches and volunteers.

“Our riders receive an individual program carefully planned by their coach to suit their individual needs to build upon confidence, independence and a sense of achievement.

“Horse riding is a natural reflex inhibiting position which helps improve balance and posture providing a unique form of exercise and rehabilitation.

“The movement of a horse strengthens muscles and promotes better overall health.”

Ms Nevah said RDAT centres had long waitlists at the moment.

“One of the reasons for this is that we don’t have enough horses to cater for all potential riders,” she said.

“If we were able to

raise funds to purchase and care for additional horses, we would be able to assist more Tasmanians to become involved in this wonderful program.”

RDA riders said the program had a lot of benefits for people.

“I have had to share horses before and I think [getting a new horse] will bring more people to RDA,” Anneli said.

“I have loved horses since I was a kid and RDA has helped me a lot over the years.”

“Another horse means more riders who will get an opportunity to ride,” rider Maryanne said.

RDAT had a difficult year due to the impact of COVID-19, with all centres closing for six months between March and September.

THE Multicultural Hub in Moonah welcomed the community through its doors when it was the venue for the annual Community Christmas Morning Tea that was hosted by AttorneyGeneral and Liberal Member for Clark Elise Archer.

Ms Archer said it was important time of the year to acknowledge the hard work of individuals, community groups and organisations in the electorate.

“To be able to hold this community event this year was particularly special and it is always my greatest pleasure to

assist community, sporting and other not for profit organisations throughout the year, and to host a morning tea to show my appreciation and celebrate the incredible work they do in our community,” she said.

“2020 was an unprecedented and challenging year and I am continually inspired by the support that Tasmanians have provided to each other during this difficult time.

“It was fitting that this year’s community morning tea was held at The Multicultural Hub – an opportunity for many

in our community to reconnect.”

The Multicultural Hub was a project of Ms Archer’s as a state local Member from 2010, which was then funded in 2014 by the incoming State Liberal Government.

“Our Government recognises the importance of a centrally located space for a wide range of culturally diverse activities and other events in the Clark electorate,” Ms Archer said.

“I look forward to 2021 and continuing to support the Tasmanian community as we continue to rebuild a stronger Tasmania.”

Appeal shows the power of giving PET OF THE MONTH WINNER Sponsored by Claremont Veterinary Surgery

THE local community came together to spread the Christmas joy and help bring in the new year to families in need.

As part of St Vincent de Paul’s Simply Giving Program, Speaker of the House of Assembly Sue Hickey collected toys and gifts to give to children and families in need for Christmas.

Ms Hickey collected 250 toys, ranging from activity based toys to dress up dolls as well as hand knitted teddy bears and clothes, and books.

“We were tickled pink and I didn’t mind asking people to donate for such a good cause because there are people out there doing it so tough,” Ms Hickey said.

“For a child to wake up on Christmas morning and not even get one gift is unbearable, so it really was something that I was quite passionate about.

“It was a really tough year and it was a really nice way to finish it by seeing the generosity of people.”

The Simply Giving

Program was part of St Vincent de Paul’s Christmas Appeal.

St Vincent de Paul Society southern regional manager Maree Cole said they saw some great donations towards the appeal as well as general donations that went to their op shops.

“If we have those donations, we can offer good second hand clothing to people in all areas, and with those funds, we’ll be able to support our community service programs throughout the year,” she

said.

“This Christmas Appeal, we supported more than 400 families in southern Tasmanian – we’re really proud we could provide that support to people, particularly around that time of the year where money was stretched.

“We’re proud that St Vincent de Paul Society could provide something towards that special Christmas celebration and we couldn’t have done it without Sue Hickey’s support.”

COVID-19 presented us with many unprecedented challenges.

Throughout the year, I was particularly inspired by the resilience, strength and optimism of the Tasmanian community.

Despite the difficult year, the Government has taken action to ensure the ongoing safety and wellbeing of the Tasmanian community.

I am proud of our ongoing significant law and order reform agenda that will make a real difference to people’s day to day lives.

In March, the pilot witness intermediary scheme will commence.

This is a really exciting reform that stems from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and will see highly skilled communications experts help children and vulnerable

adults give evidence in homicide and sexual abuse matters in court.

It takes extraordinary strength and courage to give evidence and seek justice.

To appear in court and give evidence as a witness or victim can be a very stressful experience and this initiative will see invaluable assistance provided to help make this process much easier.

We have also made significant steps towards introducing updated legislation relating to dangerous criminals and high risk offenders.

It is expected that this legislation will be

passed early in the parliamentary year and become operational shortly after.

These updated laws will allow for the indefinite detention of dangerous criminals and provide the ability for the Supreme Court to impose conditions on a high risk offender being released from prison at the end of their sentence, which will allow them to be actively monitored (for example, by electronic monitoring) and supported as they reintegrate back into the community.

These are just two recent examples of the important actions I have

taken as Attorney-General and I look forward to continuing to drive a strong legislative agenda in 2021 which will help keep our community safe.
