Council News CLARENCE CITY COUNCIL Key decisions from the Council meeting held on Monday 15 JANUARY 2024: • Council approved a development application for additions and alteration (single dwelling) at 7 Bangalee Street, Lauderdale subject to conditions and advice.

• Council approved a development application for a dwelling and outbuilding at 12 Chilean Court, Sandford subject to conditions and advice.

• Council approved a development application for 10 multiple dwellings and three communal residences at 6 Page Court, Warrane subject to conditions and advice.

Key decisions from the Council meeting held on Monday, 5 FEBRUARY 2024: • Council approved a development application for the change of use to visitor accommodation at 28 Lanena Street, Bellerive subject to conditions and advice.

• Council approved a development application for additions and alterations to a dwelling at 40A King Street, Bellerive subject to conditions and advice.

The Clarence Jazz Festival is back for the 28th year and is now Tasmania’s longest-running music festival.

We have a jam-packed and impressive program of artists from all over the world who will be lighting up the Eastern Shore with their music, art and culinary delights to ignite the senses.

I am continually blown away by this event which gets better each year.

The Derwent Ferry service continues to prove a massive hit with commuters.

Recently the 300,000-passenger milestone was celebrated by Derwent Ferries with this popular service averaging more than 500 passengers a day.

The ongoing success of the ferry service is of great benefit to the people of Clarence and I can’t wait to see the service continue to evolve, in particular, delivering extensions to commuting options between

I, and the other Greater Hobart mayors, have recently called upon the Tasmanian Government to commit $26 million in funding to expand ferry terminal sites, beyond what will be possible with the $20 million in funding Councils have already secured from the Australian Government.

In 2024 I would like to encourage all members of the community to get involved in Neighbour Day by voting for the best neighbours in our City.

This annual event, being held on 31 March, is a chance to boost a sense of belonging, acknowledge people and strengthen local connections. For more information, please look at our website.

Lastly, now is also the time to start thinking about nominations for the City of Clarence’s Citizen of the Year Awards, a fantastic opportunity to recognise those who go above and beyond in our community.

As your mayor, it is a significant honour for me to meet and interact with so many wonderful citizens and I am continually impressed by all those who selflessly give of their time to make our city a more vibrant place to live.

Students get a jump on new school year MORE than 1500 Tasmanian school students will return to school with a focus on nutrition, wellbeing and resilience through the Tasmania JackJumpers in Schools program.

The program, supported by the JackJumpers and Huon Aquaculture, rolled out across more than 50 Tasmanian classrooms after a pilot program in late 2023.

Written by Tasmanian primary school teachers in line with the Tasmanian education curriculum, the program incorporates learning modules around

resilience, diversity, nutrition and exercise.

Tasmania JackJumpers chief executive officer Christine Finnegan said the program had received positive responses since its soft launch in September 2023.

“Our original goal was to engage 50 classrooms across Tasmania for the whole of 2024 and we have already exceeded that target for the start of term one with schools all over the state signing up to take advantage of the program,” she said.

“We feel this program can have a positive impact

in classrooms, spreading the club’s values and helping to promote healthy, active and mindful growth through their adolescent years.

“Our school and community clinics teach basketball lessons but this program will help us further our reach off the court and make sure kids are good people as well as talented athletes.”

WITH two more ‘weekends in the valley’ left in the Richmond Bicentenary program, there is plenty of time to hep commemorate the 200th anniversary of one of Tasmania’s most historic towns.

The four days between 24 and 27 February will mark the bicentenary of the town’s proclamation and feature Open House Richmond, special events, town walks and exhibitions.

Open House Richmond will offer visitors the opportunity to explore the spaces, learn the history and hear the stories of more than 20 properties across Richmond and the Coal River Valley.

“This will be a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a range of architectural styles spanning across the past 200 years,” Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said.

The closing weekend, Fruits of the Valley, will be held from 8 to 11 March and will include the Richmond Fair, farm gate events and a street party for residents.

The Bicentenary program kicked off in early December in line with the 200th anniversary of the laying of the first stone of the Richmond Bridge, the oldest bridge in Australia still in use.

acknowledgment of the traditional owners of the land, the Mumirimina people of the Oyster Bay nation, who were devastated by British settlement.

“The history of the region was incredibly rich and began long before Richmond Village was established,” Mayor Blomeley said.

“As well as the better-known colonial history, which is so often celebrated, we must also recognise the shameful harm caused to the indigenous people

of these lands by colonial settlers.

“The history and stories of the Mumirimina people is less known but equally as important.”

Throughout all five weekends an exhibition titled ‘Mumirimina: People and Country’ has been displayed in the Richmond Courthouse, featuring 12 reproductions of artworks depicting the people and stories of lands stolen and lives ruined by the colonial settlement of Richmond.

A sound investment helping children with hearing loss THE Shepherd Centre, a not-for-profit group that helps children living with hearing loss, has received $4,800 for specialist audiology equipment through the Hydro Tasmania Community Grants Program.

manager Tiffany Slater said the grant helped the statewide service support 50 children with hearing loss listen and speak.

“The grant from Hydro Tasmania has really helped us. We were able to purchase muchneeded equipment to

enable our audiologist to check and monitor the ear health of children with hearing loss,” she said.

“Early detection of middle ear pathology ensures children receive timely medical care and have the best conditions to learn spoken

language.”

In 2023, a total of $27,000 was awarded to six deserving community groups including a community reading program, upgrades to a local playground and the purchase of a defibrillator for a community centre.

Community advisor Kate Hickey said Hydro Tasmania welcomed applications from community groups across the state.

“Often groups have a very small operating budget and survive on the goodwill of volunteers. It’s been

GARDENING IN FEBRUARY Many people are now interested in attracting wildlife into the garden and may have a frog pond.

During the hot weather it is important to give them cool hiding places, old terracotta pots are great for this, just lay them on their sides and half bury them amongst your plants, lizards will also make use of these ‘houses’.

Frogs and lizards help keep the gardens eco system in balance along with the birds attracted to the water, and flowering plants.

How about a worm farm? They are a great way to recycle your kitchen scraps and receive great fertilizer for your garden in return.

The worm farm with taps give a liquid concentrate and diluted this is a great plant tonic.

Worms are low maintenance requiring a cool dry space away from hot afternoon sun and kept moist.

Compost worms are not the same as garden worms and can be purchased in a bag of compost or you can get some from someone who has a working worm farm.

They multiply quickly so you do not need a lot to get started.

Mayors unite for ferry funding FOUR Greater Hobart mayors have joined together in calling for the Tasmanian Government to deliver a $26 million ferry infrastructure package to complete the River Derwent terminal network.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley, Hobart Mayor Anna Reynolds, Glenorchy Mayor Bec Thomas and Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt are asking for $20 million to match an

existing commitment made by the Australian Government for the development of an additional three ferry terminals at Howrah Point, Kingston Beach and Regatta Point.

The remaining $6 million will go towards upgrades at the Bellerive terminal.

“With the support of the Australian Government, our councils have already secured $20 million in federal funding

for three of the six terminal locations identified in the Draft River Derwent Ferry Service Masterplan,” Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said.

“The Tasmanian Government now has an important role to play in supporting jobs and improving outcomes for Greater Hobart commuters by funding the remaining ferry terminals envisioned as part of the expanded network.”

Bellerive Beach joins global community movement CLARENCE residents can turn their everyday photos into valuable coastal data with a CoastSnap location at Bellerive Beach.

CoastSnap is a global citizen science project that captures changing coastlines. It relies on repeat photos submitted by

citizens of the same location and helps track how the coast is changing over time.

At each monitoring point, such as at the western end of Bellerive Beach, a fixed position pole and camera cradle is set up so that the Clarence community can

capture images of Bellerive Beach to share via social media or email.

These images are records which then provide real time data that helps scientists better understand our beaches and forecast coastline changes in the coming decades.

Searching for Clarence’s best neighbour NOMINATIONS are now open for the eighth annual Clarence Neighbour of the Year Award which will highlight the community member who best exemplifies the 2024 Neighbour Day theme ‘creating a shared belonging’.

National Neighbour Day will be celebrated on 31 March and forms part of Relationships Australia’s Neighbours Every Day program, which promotes the benefits of social connections and the importance of respectful relationships.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said Neighbour Day was a significant initiative on the city’s calendar to help create a sense of belonging and place for all in the community.

“Feeling that you are being seen and have support from those around you goes a long way to promote feelings of belonging and positive wellbeing,” he said.

“Some easy ways to build social connections and meaningful relationships could be going for a walk in your community and simply say hello to those you

see, spending time in shared community spaces or even doing a random act of kindness such as dropping off some baked goods or spare veggies to your neighbour.

“The Neighbour Day awards serve as a fantastic way for acknowledging individuals in our community who consistently go above and beyond for those around them.”

Palliative care at home COMMUNITY pharmacies across Tasmania are working together with local GPs and the Department of Health to help support palliative care patients who have chosen to stay at home.

Pharmacists and GPs will receive training from the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia to prescribe and dispense essential palliative medicines, allowing them to attend to patients who have chosen to stay in the comfort of their own home.

“This program is designed to support more Tasmanians and their loved ones with the specialist care they deserve and enable them to stay in the comfortable environment of their own residence while managing

life-limiting illnesses,” Minister for Health Guy Barnett said.

Pharmacies are also offered a one-off incentive payment of $200 to participate in the program to assist in the purchase of medicines.

President of the Tasmanian Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia David Peachy said that the joint approach showed how committed healthcare professionals are to keeping palliative care patients comfortable.

“The Tasmanian Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia is proud to be a part of this innovative program to improve services and support for palliative care patients within our community,” Mr Peachey said.

This new program allows people

more flexibility when dealing with a palliative illness, allowing them to choose between hospital and their own home.

“Often people who want to die at home can’t do so – this can be for a range of reasons, including not having access to suitable support,” Primary Health Tasmania spokesperson Suezanne Horder said.

“This initiative will remove one of these support barriers and help GPs provide even better care to their patients who are at the end of their life and want to receive care at home.”

Participants in a Libraries Tasmania Digital Skills session in 2023

Libraries helping locals unlock the digital world LIBRARIES Tasmania is helping people improve their digital literacy skills with a variety of engaging workshops in Rosny and Sorell.

The free sessions will provide hands-on experiences with trained mentors that help individuals manage the often-daunting landscape

of online tools essential in daily life.

Libraries Tasmania digital inclusion and adult learning coordinator Josie Hurst said the sessions supported people and helped build their confidence when working with digital programs.

“Proper digital literacy can be an incredibly

powerful tool in today’s world but equally damaging when there is a lack of knowledge of how to utilise it properly,” she said.

“This year, we have developed our sessions to become more engaging in response to feedback from previous programs.

“The sessions provide support for those in the community who need to use technology in their daily lives but haven’t been provided these learning importunities in the past.”

Upcoming digital literacy sessions, all available at Rosny Library, will explore a

diverse range of topics including using digital tools in language, accessing apps in nature and managing your digital legacy.

“Our ‘unlocking languages with technology’ sessions in March will align with Harmony Day and help people working with

translation tools and exploring different cultures,” Ms Hurst said.

“The ‘digital wilderness’ sessions in April will cater to Tasmanians who want to explore this beautiful state and utilise digital tools to enhance their experiences.

“Often our most

popular program, ‘your digital legacy’ in May will explore what needs to be done with your digital footprint, saved material and social profiles after you pass away.”

Home sweet habitat for Mount Rumney wildlife TWO-years-ago Catherine McWhirter and David Rust successfully registered their Mount Rumney property with the Land for Wildlife program.

The program, facilitated by the Tasmanian Land Conservancy, helps private landowners with nature conservation.

Due to their efforts to reinvigorate their property, the couple were named February’s Climate Champions by community group

Clarence Climate Action.

“When the assessors came to view our property, they were so excited,” Ms McWhirter said.

“They identified things we’d been stepping over such as tiny orchid-like flowers, a rare wild pea, insect cocoons and different birds. We discovered a richness that we didn’t know about.”

After the assessment, the couple were sent a detailed report with a map of the block, a list of bird and plant species

and a book to help with identification.

They were also provided with equipment for weed control and could get discounts on recording cameras to help with monitoring.

Mr Rust said their motivation for joining the program was the enormous impact humans have had on wildlife habitats and the need to preserve existing wildlife corridors.

“We would absolutely recommend this program to other landowners,

we’ve learnt so much from it,” he said.

The couple have recorded an astonishing variety of creature sightings on their property including echidnas, bandicoots, pademelons, quolls, boobook owls and native wrens.

The Land for Wildlife program requires properties to be greater than two hectares in size with intact vegetation or re-vegetated land that conserves native species and habitats.

LIKE many other Tasmanians, Elana Gough and her family love hitching up their caravan and travelling across the state for a weekend away to relax and recharge.

An important aspect of their time away is ensuring the safety of both themselves and other road users, taking the necessary steps to plan their route, conduct thorough checks and drive to the conditions.

“We love travelling with our caravan and switching off for a weekend, but we also understand our responsibility to ensure our vehicle is up to standard,” Ms

Gough said.

“A big part of our preparation goes into fully checking over our vehicle and caravan, ensuring it is ready for the journey.

“Tasmania has some challenging roads that can be tight and twisty, so it is important to plan out your journey and seek the best route possible, which may not always be the fastest.”

RACT head of roadside service delivery John Dobie said there was a heightened risk when towing a boat or caravan during time of increased traffic on the state’s roads, including long

weekends and holiday periods.

“We’re urging all Tasmanians to practice safety over speed and asking them to prioritise careful planning and adherence to road safety guidelines,” he said.

“We all want to reach our destination quickly, but safety should never be compromised.

“If you’re towing a caravan or boat don’t overload it and make sure any weight you do add is evenly distributed across the axle.

“By embracing these safety measures, drivers can significantly enhance their safety and that of others on the road.”

Paving the way for road improvements DETAILED road inspections, utilising purpose-built hightech survey vehicles, have been conducted across Clarence to record the conditions of sealed roads and inform a four-year council plan for road management.

The inspection vehicles used cameras to give a snapshot of road surfaces, kerbs and road corridors at a point in time which could be used in future to help determine how roads fair over time.

Blomeley said this survey technology, combined with regular inspections, provided insight into how roads deteriorated and helped the council predict future road needs.

“This will show the current road conditions in greater detail, how they fair over time and how we can improve the overall condition of our roads across our region,” he said.

“We have a very large road network in Clarence and road maintenance and infrastructure is

the largest expense in our annual budget.

“The results and outcomes of this report will inform our Road and Transport Asset Management Plan for years to come, ensuring we invest time and money into the areas that need it the most.”

Council will review the data and include a summary in the Road and Transport Asset Management Plan, which will be made available on council’s website once completed at www.ccc.tas.gov.au/ documents/publications

No need to feed Derwent ducks A NEW booklet created to help birdwatchers identify Tasmanian ducks and learn about their diets and behaviours is now available for free at multiple southern Tasmanian councils.

Ducks of Tasmania was developed through a joint effort between the Derwent Estuary Program, BirdLife Tasmania and the Pacific Black Duck Conservation Group.

Derwent Estuary Program chief executive officer Ursula Taylor said she hoped the booklet would bring great joy to people venturing on walks around Tasmania.

“We wanted to create something easy to carry and read for duck lovers,” she said.

“With beautiful illustrations by Hobartbased artist Sam Lyne, the booklet will help people easily identify ducks.

“We have 11 native ducks in Tasmania, many

of whom are regular visitors to the Derwent Estuary. We wanted to share how we can enjoy seeing them without harming their welfare.”

BirdLife Tasmania convenor Karen Dick said feeding ducks was seriously impacting the native species.

“Feeding ducks any food can cause illnesses, pollute waterways where large numbers of ducks congregate and attract rodents,” she said.

“The only ducks that benefit from people feeding them are Mallards and we’d hate to see the Pacific Black Duck driven out of the Derwent due to cross-breeding.”

Copies of Ducks of Tasmania are available at the City of Hobart, Glenorchy, Clarence, Kingborough, Brighton, Derwent Valley, Huon Valley and Sorell councils.

Dark Mofo mainstays to return DESPITE the wider Dark Mofo celebrations being put on pause in 2024, several popular events, including the Winter Feast and Nude Solstice Swim, will return in June.

The Winter Feast will return for two separate weeks, from 13 to 16 June and again from 20 to 23 June at Princess Wharf 1 (PW1), showcasing some of Tasmania’s best food, wine and spirits.

After a record number of participants in 2023, the Nude Solstice Swim will be run with an

increased capacity at Long Beach Sandy Bay on Friday 21 June.

The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) will open a new exhibition in June. Namedropping, a showcase exploring how people wish to be perceived by others, will be unveiled in the Lavish Gala at Mona on Friday 14 June and will run until April 2025.

“While the festival rests in 2024, the solstice does not and we are excited to gather once more to present two popular pillars of the Tasmanian midwinter, along with

some exceptional extra events,” Dark Mofo artistic director Chris Twite said.

“Dark Mofo has established itself as a beacon of artistic exploration and challenging ideas for a decade, immersing audiences in the depths of darkness and the heart of winter.

“These events will ensure that Dark Mofo continues to be a catalyst for artistic innovation, cultural dialogue and shared experiences for many years to come.”

AFTER a year of dedicated volunteer work, the Geilston Bay Boat Club (GBBC) will celebrate the renewal of its main jetty with a community event on 17 February.

Built in 1967 by 27 club members and utilised for recreational boating and boat licensing courses, the GBBC main jetty was in dire need of an overhaul in order to continue to serve the club.

In early 2023 the GBBC self-funded significant works on the below deck

infrastructure and, in September 2023, received a TasPorts Community Grant to purchase timber and renew the jetty’s topsides.

GBBC commodore Scott Johnson said he was pleased with the spirit of volunteerism shown by club members during the works.

“The club was founded by volunteers and is maintained by volunteers.

It was in that spirit that the members came together in a massive way

to breathe life into our jetty,” he said.

“Over the course of the project the team have contributed more than 500 volunteer hours of labour.”

The GBBC will toast the renewed jetty on 17 February with a spit roast, music and ribbon cutting.

The event will also include an update on the adjacent boardwalk project, which was funded by a state election commitment in 2021 and is sponsored by the Clarence City Council.

Upcoming festival jazzing up the Eastern Shore THE 28th annual Clarence Jazz Festival will once again light up the Eastern Shore with a dazzling display of music, art and culinary delights.

This year the festival will be spread over five days from 28 February to 3 March with activities for the whole family.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said that the 2024 Festival would be bigger, better, more sustainable and more accessible than ever before.

“The Clarence Jazz Festival is truly the

highlight of our annual events calendar and is an incredibly popular event not just in our Clarence community, but throughout the Greater Hobart region as well as interstate,” he said.

The festival lineup will feature renowned international and local artists including jazz legend Vince Jones, commissioned artist Leigh Rigozzi, headliner Shannon Barnett and festival scholars Leif Sweeney, Jamie Zieserlo and Otto Kneupfer.

Encompassing the

Rosny Farm Arts Centre lawns and grounds, Rosny Barn, the Schoolhouse Gallery and the Rosny Parklands, the festival hub will be easily accessible by bus, bike, ferry, foot or car.

Mayor Blomeley said that this year’s festival would be the most “delicious” to date with a variety of local food and drink vendors featured throughout.

“We are thrilled to be showcasing so many incredible Clarence producers and businesses this year,” he said.

“The cultural impact of the Clarence Jazz Festival, Tasmania’s longest-running festival, is impossible to overstate.

The new litter of Guide Dog puppies includes five boys and one girl

Schools seeing double LOCAL schools will see a surge in the number of twins in attendance this year as more sets of siblings pack their bags and begin their education.

Mother and Tasmanian Multiple Birth Association (TMBA) member Alesha Hayes said there were more than 10 sets of twins starting school across the Greater Hobart region in 2024.

“This is the largest number of twins starting school in the area we have ever had,” she said.

“There are a few added pressures with twins returning to

school, including double costs for school supplies and uniforms.

“There is also the worry that, especially identical twins, they won’t be seen as individuals in the classroom.”

TMBA president Anita Engelbrecht said although starting school was an exciting time for any child, having two or more children start school at once could be challenging for families.

“Aside from the multiple sets of uniforms and supplies there are a number of other

considerations that parents must take into account and discuss with the school before their children commence,” she said.

“Classroom placement, whether to split them or keep them together, is one of the biggest dilemmas faced by parents of multiples.

“There is no one size fits all answer to classroom placement.

The research indicates that parents are best placed to determine what will suit the individual needs of their children.”

Paws for celebration GUIDE Dogs Tasmania has welcomed five new assistance and guide dog puppies through its second Tasmanian-born litter, with a third litter expected in the coming weeks.

Guide Dogs Tasmania chief executive officer Anna Presser said there was an overwhelming sense of anticipation and excitement around the new arrivals.

“We are incredibly proud to be the only organisation located in Tasmania that breeds, raises and trains guide and assistance dogs for

Tasmanians in need,” she said.

“The breeding program serves a dual purpose by meeting the rising demand for guide and assistance dogs in Tasmania and introducing new service offerings for individuals with low vision, disabilities and life challenges.”

To meet the increasing demand for trained dogs in the community, Guide Dogs Tasmania needs more volunteers.

“With the arrival of this litter and subsequent litters, we are asking the community to embrace the

opportunity to help change people’s lives forever and join our team as a volunteer puppy raiser,” Guide Dogs Tasmania business manager Kim Ryan said.

“Puppy raisers play a crucial role by welcoming eight-week-old puppies into their homes.

“The organisation covers all costs, including food, equipment and medical care.”

Dreams of a breakthrough RESEARCHERS at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) are developing a test to predict Parkinson’s disease and dementia through an uncommon sleep disorder.

The study focuses on subjects experiencing isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep disorder, which causes them to physically act out their dreams, and find a link from this behaviour to the development of neurodegenerative diseases.

The study is led by senior sleep

scientist Samantha Bramich and neurologist associate professor Jane Alty from the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre at UTAS. Ms Bramich said the studies journey into understanding Parkinson’s Disease at its earliest stages was ground breaking.

“The prospect of developing a simple, cost-effective online test to detect isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder, a precursor to Parkinson’s, represents a transformative leap

in neurodegenerative disease research,” she said.

“This test isn’t just a tool, it’s a beacon of hope for early intervention, potentially altering the lives of millions by offering a chance to address the disease decades before symptoms manifest.”

Parkinson’s disease is the fastest growing degenerative brain disorder in the world and a lowcost screening test, developed in Tasmania, could detect the disease decades before it takes hold.

A feast for the senses THE inaugural Crave Harvest Festival in Richmond will showcase the talented individuals and high-quality produce of the Coal River Valley.

Organised by the Coal River Valley Tasmania Tourism Association and the Clarence City Council, the two-day event in April will feature stalls showcasing local producers and food vans offering enjoyable readyto-eat meals.

Attendees will be able to watch demonstrations or purchase tickets to participate in masterclasses covering topics from wine and cheese pairings to gin or whisky tasting.

The main stage will host live musical performances by local

entertainers while a family-friendly kids’ zone will provide entertainment for children.

Clarence City Council chief executive officer Ian Nelson said the festival would support the council’s goal of creating a people friendly city.

“This event supports and contributes to Clarence City Council’s Strategic Plan 2021 to 2031 vision of a vibrant, prosperous and sustainable city,” he said.

“The festival will drive visitation to the area with the economic flow on effects reaching into the surrounding region through visitor accommodation and increased local jobs

during the event.

“This event will be a celebration and promotion of the world class produce throughout the Coal River Valley.

“We look forward to welcoming this event to Clarence and the Coal River Valley and throw Clarence City Council’s full support behind the Coal River Valley Tourism Association in their preparations for this exciting event.”

STEM helping empower young minds JUST in time for the return of students, the Southern Support School in Howrah has received a comprehensive Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning kit from the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering (ATSE).

Southern Support School principal Simon Ellaby said the school was always looking for ways to expand its teaching and the STEM kit would provide extra opportunities to extend students’ knowledge in scientific fields.

“These new kits, generously donated by ATSE, will provide

The Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania celebrates 100 years afloat

Brian Edmonds, MYCT Commodore THE Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania (MYCT) was formed in 1924 after the first powerboat race was held from Hobart to New Norfolk.

Six years later MYCT held the first powerboat championship races and opened its clubrooms in Collins Street.

As the Club grew more popular, it moved

to a larger venue in Victoria Street, Hobart.

During World War II, petrol restrictions prevented the use of power-driven craft for personal use, however the clubrooms continued to prosper as a place for servicemen and women to gather and relax during leave periods.

It was around 1950 when the Club purchased land on

a foreshore site at Lindisfarne where powerboat racing could take place in Lindisfarne Bay. During the 1960s, the then commadore Mr H.C. Millington leased some land at Granton on the Derwent River, and he was instrumental in the club procuring the site which is still used for powerboat racing today. In 1974 a new Clubhouse at the Lindisfarne foreshore property was renovated which is where the very popular facility sits today.

The MYCT marina opened in 2000 and was the largest floating marina in Southern Tasmania with 123 berths for power cruisers and yachts.

In the 2000s the MYCT organised a number of ‘Watersports Expos’ which attracted more than 7000 visitors to Lindisfarne.

In 2007 the MYCT

purchased the historic vessel ‘Egeria’. The Egeria was fully restored by an enthusiastic team of volunteers which is now running charters on behalf of the Club.

In 2008 the RSL and the Club amalgamated to share some facilities.

This has proven to be a most successful partnership whereby the joint membership has seen both enjoy better trade and increased membership.

Powerboat racing has remained an integral part of the Club, with members racing at Granton, around Tasmania and Interstate with numerous successful titles brought home to the MYCT. A major renovation on the Clubhouse saw the bar extended to allow greater access for members and guests and a revamp of the Reflections restaurant, which is extremely popular with members

and the general public.

2015 saw the Club introduce dragon boating to Lindisfarne Bay, with the Derwent Storms now calling Lindisfarne home.

Although the origins of MYCT is based on power boats, establishment of the marina some 20 years ago saw many yachts take up berths. This resulted in some skippers organising social races which ultimately, following the development of a close relationship with Lindisfarne Sailing Club, developed into a full sailing program.

Racing usually takes place north of the Tasman Bridge and attracts yachts from all major yacht clubs in Hobart. Most popular are the Friday night twilight races which are held on a fortnightly basis during daylight saving time. In addition, there is a Summer Series

and a Winter Series each with six races, held on a monthly basis.

Many yachts also take part in the Channel Cup which involves two races that finish in Barnes Bay with a social event.

Thanks to the forefathers of the Club meeting on the shores of the Derwent River in 1924, we can now celebrate the 100-year milestone.

It is fitting that our powerboat members will be representing the Club as the MYCT hosts the National Powerboat Championships at Granton on 9 and 10 March.

A range of celebrations are planned for members and the public to enjoy, including music, food and friendship.

There are numerous events occuring over the weekend, with something for everyone to enjoy.

The MYCT has been

built by passionate boaters over many years and has evolved to be social and inclusive, it is a club that both our members and the community is proud of.

The MYCT has been part of the social fabric of Lindisfarne for the last century and the Board of Management warmly invites all come and join in the 100-year celebrations.

The historic motor launch Egeria

OWNERSHIP of the ML Egeria transferred to the Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania (MYCT) in October 2007 after the former Marine Board of Hobart, the original owners and builders of the Huon pine vessel, became part of TasPorts.

The Egeria served as a Harbour Defence vessel during the second World War and in its life with the Marine Board performed duties as a pilot vessel and the master

warden’s executive launch.

The Egeria was regularly provided to the State Government for use by visiting dignitaries that have included the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, King Charles III and his former wife Lady Diana, various Governor Generals and Prime Ministers.

A very traditional role has been the provision of on water transport for Tasmanian State Governors since 1941 to

such an extent that the Egeria is colloquially known as the governor’s launch.

Since coming to the MYCT the Egeria has supported the Australian Wooden Boat Festival, Rotary Club of Hobart Charity Sail Day and the Scout Ranger Regatta at Snug.

Under the custodianship of 30 very committed MYCT volunteers and with the help of some generous sponsors, the Egeria remains

in excellent condition and is available to the general public for private charter with a passenger capacity of 26.

To date more than 14,000 passengers have been carried with an average of 80 annual trips.

Guests are welcome to self-cater food and beverages while glasses, plates, cutlery, tea and coffee are provided on board.

Catering can also be supplied through the MYCT

kitchen.

A great way to entertain friends or visitors is the very popular one-hour harbour cruise with BYO drinks and nibbles followed by a main course meal in the MYCT Reflections restaurant for 50 dollars.

Through the ongoing patronage of this 82-year-old vessel and commitment of the MYCT volunteers the Egeria will be on the River Derwent for many generations to come.

Racing dragons ORIGINATING in China more than 2000-yearsago, dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing water sports in Australia.

The exciting sport will make its way to the River Derwent in March as more than 110 dragon boaters from across Australia arrive in Hobart to paddle 40 kilometres from New Norfolk to the Tasman Bridge.

Dragon boating is open to anyone older than 12-years and although many paddlers aspire to compete at the elite level, others are content to enjoy the fitness, friendship and recreational opportunities the sport provides.

Crews comprise up to 20 paddlers along with a drummer and sweep all working together as a team.

The Derwent Storms Dragon Boat Club Inc (Derwent Storms) is one of seven dragon boat clubs in Tasmania and is based at the Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania (MYCT) in Lindisfarne.

Originally called the Lindisfarne Dragon Boat Racing Club, the Derwent Storms was formed in 2008 and has gone from strength to strength since those early days.

With roughy 80 members, it is relatively small compared to

interstate clubs but punches above its weight in terms of performance.

Club members have consistently been selected to represent Australia at World Championships across the globe and to represent both Tasmania and the club at Australian Championships.

Recent success in the 2023 Club Crew Australian Championships qualified the Derwent Storms to compete at the 2024 Club Crew World Championships in Italy.

Training is currently in full swing for the 2024 Australian Championships being held in Perth in April.

Qualified coaches run up to four training sessions per week and support all members to achieve their very best.

With sessions held throughout the year paddlers develop fitness, skills and resilience as they experience the changing conditions of the River Derwent.

Fast, loud, fun at MYCT Speedboats racing at a previous year’s MYCT event

SOME of the fastest boats in the country will be in Hobart on 9 and 10 March at the Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania’s (MYCT) Granton circuit.

Our local boat drivers will be facing off against interstate racers in a fight for the chequered flag.

There are up to 12 boats in each race, with names like Hadley Deegan and Craig Bailey participating in this year’s competition.

With some boats reaching speeds of up to 225 kilometres per hour it is sure to be an intense, loud and exciting weekend of racing.

It all starts Friday at MYCT Lindisfarne with boats on display from 2pm, then at MYCT Granton for the Saturday heats and Sunday finals.

Bring along a deck chair and picnic and enjoy this once in a lifetime event featuring some of the best racers in Australia.

Esther is a qualified chef who has worked

in a number of top restaurants around Australia, New Zealand and London and she strongly believes that the nutrition of our pets is just as important as it is

A diagnosis of Cushings Disease in 2018 for her dog Jack prompted Esther to dig a little deeper into the commercial dog food industry.

She was extremely concerned by some of her findings.

Armed with the findings of her research, Esther was determined to improve the quality of Jack’s diet and to create healthy food for her two dogs. She also had an extremely fussy dog, Chelo, so she needed to make not just nutritious food, but delicious food to ensure he would eat it.

Esther worked with a pet nutritionist to curate six delicious meals for your dog. These include chicken and chia seeds, lamb and spinach, beef and beetroot and salmon and sardines.

Since the business began in 2019, Esther has expanded their range, which now includes dried dog treats such as grass-fed beef liver and a fan-favourite crispy salmon skins.

There are also in-house made bone broths which are added to all their

cooked meals but are also sold individually.

“The bone broths have been a huge hit,” Esther said.

“They are especially good for senior dogs or dogs with arthritis, as they are high in collagen and glucosamine which helps your dog’s joints.”

Esther has seen tremendous growth in the business and puts it down to pet-parents becoming more educated about the importance diet plays in their pet’s overall health.

In 2023, she purchased the old butcher on Allunga Road in Chigwell and renovated it over a period of six months. The building now allows for their full production on site and has a shopfront where customers can purchase the whole range.

The shop is open Monday to Wednesday 9am to 5pm and Thursday to Saturday 10am to 1pm.

The meals are also available at Hill Street Grocer, Salamanca Fresh, Lindisfarne IGA and The Local Grocer Cambridge in the pet food fridges.

Inclusive programs building capacity ONTRACK Tasmania is proud to announce the expansion of its Making Tracks programs to provide more opportunities for people living with a disability to develop essential skills.

Operating in southern Tasmania, the registered NDIS provider is now offering music classes five days a week with the cooking and art programs set to expand soon.

The music program is led by Pradeep, who brings with him a wealth of knowledge and passion for music. The program provides a platform for participants to express themselves and build their skills in music. It offers a variety of musical instruments and resources available at its music studio including guitar, drums, piano, singing and song writing. The program is designed to be inclusive and weekly reviews are conducted to track progress and review learning plans.

The cooking program, led by Anup, a highly qualified chef from Nepal, will be expanding to four days a week. Anup has structured the classes to be informative and engaging, aiming to develop basic and advanced cooking skills including food handling, mixing ingredients, baking, communication in the kitchen and teamwork.

OnTrack Tasmania recently hired an additional art program leader, Billy, to expand the program to five days a week. Billy has more than 13 years of experience in mural art, textile design and graphic design.

He has a diverse skill set and is proficient in different painting and drawing styles, materials and techniques such as sketching, gouache, decorative painting, fashion illustration, tie-dyeing, batik art and embroidery. The program is designed to be welcoming and supportive, tailored to the need and goals of each participant and focused on building connections, fostering socialisation and boosting confidence.

OnTrack Tasmania’s expanded programs are designed to provide NDIS participants with opportunities to develop essential life skills, express themselves and experience a sense of accomplishment. The programs are inclusive, accessible and led by talented and passionate program leaders. Glenview debuts new Waratah unit for dementia care THE new Waratah building, a cottagelike dementia care unit, has opened at Glenview Community Services in Glenorchy and is the first specialised dementia care program (SDCP) supported by the Commonwealth Department of Health.

Waratah delivers person-centred care for people living with dementia who have severe behavioural and psychological symptoms who are not able to be cared for in mainstream aged care.

Specialist dementia clinical manager of Waratah Kath Roughley said the team understood the importance of knowing the person they were caring for.

“By liaising closely with the families of the home’s first residents, we have ensured that everything is in place for their arrival,” she said.

“I’m excited to work with the care team using our person-centred care model. We focus on the individual’s needs and preferences so that we can deliver safe and meaningful care.

“We support the person until they can transition back into aged care, a process that usually takes around 12 months.

“We offer higher staff-to-resident ratios at Waratah, thanks to outreach

services from the Tasmanian Health Service funded by the Commonwealth, which is unique to this program.”

Chief executive officer Damian Jacobs said Glenview was proud to open the first SDCP program in Tasmania and happy to say that anyone in the state, or even interstate, can be referred for care at Waratah with no geographical boundaries in place.

“The unit opened in midDecember, a week after the 75th anniversary of Glenview Community Services,” he said.

“The event is the only time that Waratah could be open to visitors because a calm space with recognisable staff is integral to the success of the program.

“There is an online tour on the Glenview website if you’d like to see Waratah house.”

Eligibility for the program is assessed by Dementia Support Australia only.

Caring for the community JESSICA Phillips, inspired to become a support worker after witnessing the care her grandmother received from Community Based Support (CBS), has now been a full-time disability support worker for five years.

“I love every day. My eyes are open, my feet are on the floor, everyone’s full of energy and off I go,” Jessica said.

Jessica obtained her Certificate III while working with a flexible schedule thanks to CBS and now

helps clients with personal care, household chores and getting out into the community.

Getting fit for adventure Jo Cordell-Cooper IN my role as a personal trainer, I frequently collaborate with individuals aspiring to feel strong and self-assured, enabling them to embrace adventures like hiking.

Many clients express concerns such as questioning their age suitability and not wanting to slow down the group.

From my experience, these apprehensions can be effectively addressed by identifying a specific event or hike of interest and then enhancing your fitness to meet the challenges it presents.

Heat the mustard and coriander seeds in a dry frying pan, stirring over a medium heat until they start to pop.

Remove from the pan and lightly crush in a mortar and pestle or with a rolling pin.

Place prepared tomatoes, onions, chillies, garlic, ginger, sugar, vinegar, 1 tb smoked paprika, the crushed mustard and coriander seeds, 1 tsp salt and some chilli flakes (optional) into a large, stainless steel or enamel lined saucepan.

Put a lid on the pan while bringing to the boil, then remove the lid, turn down the heat and simmer gently until the vegetables are soft (should take about 1 hour).

Take the saucepan off the heat and, using a handheld stick blender, reduce the mixture to a chunky puree.

Add more chilli flakes or smoked paprika if desired.

7 Put washed, rinsed, and drained jars and lids on a baking tray and place into a low oven.

8 Turn off the oven when the jars are hot but leave them inside until you’re ready to place the finished chutney into the jars.

9 Bring back to the boil and continue to gently cook, uncovered and stirring regularly until there’s no loose liquid when a wooden spoon is drawn across the bottom of the pot, about another hour.

10 Taste seasoning, adding more salt, chilli flakes or smoked paprika if needed.

11 Put into clean, warm jars, lightly screw on the lids, and leave to cool.

12 When cool enough to handle, tighten the lids a little more if possible.

13 When completely cold, test that you have an airtight seal by pressing the centre of the lids.

14 This can be eaten straight away or left to mature for 6 weeks.

Unfortunately, unexpected events such as domestic/family violence abuse, hospitalisations or homelessness can strain the bond between these beloved pets and their owners.

In Tasmania, thousands of calls are made each year to the police and community services for assistance in these situations.

We have all read the reports of the housing crisis. There is no sector more affected than women fleeing domestic violence.

With women’s shelters reluctant or unable to take companion animals, we believe this program is one of the most vital we offer.

When we can, we also offer this program to people who are homeless or hospitalised, as many people in the community count their companion animal as their only friend.

Over the past year, we have collaborated with 33 agencies, including the Tasmanian Health Service, to care for 149 companion animals belonging to 117 victim/survivors, homeless or hospitalised people.

Of these clients, 37 individuals sought our help due to being homeless as a result of family/domestic violence, and 62 animals needed our care. The length of stay for these animals ranged from 2 to 321 nights, with those belonging to domestic/family violence victims/survivors staying for longer periods due to the significant housing waitlist.

Benji’s Safe Beds story A Safe Beds application was received from a family violence case manager for Benji on behalf of his human (Sally) who had been sleeping rough with her children after fleeing domestic abuse.

Sally did not know that there was a program specially set up just for her circumstances.

We had done our research and understood that there were too many people like Sally, staying in dangerous and violent homes because they did not see a pathway to safety for themselves, their children and their companion animals.

Sally moved into a women’s shelter with her children, and we took care of Benji. We have all read the news items about the lack of social housing and the increase in housing insecurity. These factors affected the family because Benji was in our care for many months, whilst they waited for housing. Their caseworker informed us that the people who suffered the most were the children, whose mental health deteriorated without their treasured pets.

But on a joyful day in December 2023, the family were reunited with Benji in their new home.

That’s why we do what we do, and we thank you all for your support for this program.

Understanding how Services Australia assesses real estate Hank Jongen, General Manager, Services Australia HELLO everyone.

Real estate assessments for Services Australia can often be misunderstood as it’s assessed differently depending on the payment you’re getting.

It’s important to remember that in most cases the principal home doesn’t affect your rate of payment.

When we look at assessable income from real estate, Services Australia does not recognise negative gearing, the tax arrangement where you can offset investment losses against other sources of taxable income.

If a property is making a loss the assessable income from the property is zero dollars.

If the payment or concession is based on your adjusted taxable income, like Family Tax Benefit, then you will need to add any net rental property losses to your taxable income as part of the claim.

For most other payments, Services Australia will look at both the assessable asset and assessable income from real estate.

The value of the asset is the market value. We assess the value at the time of application and then automatically revalue the property on the anniversary of your claim based on the movement of property prices.

Services Australia can offset the value of real estate with any loans secured against that property.

So if you have an investment property with a loan solely or jointly secured against the investment property, then we are able to reduce the market value by the proportion of the loan held against the property.

If the mortgage used to buy the real estate was secured against the family home, then none of it can be used to offset the value of the real estate.

Time share arrangements are

a form of property ownership where you have a right to use a particular property or properties for your holidays.

They are not treated the same as standard real estate. Services Australia assesses time share arrangements like a managed investment in that the income from the time share is deemed under our deeming rates.

This means that there will be an assessable income under our deeming rules, whether you earn more or less than those amounts from the time share arrangement.

We assess the asset value of a time share as the purchase price.

That can be changed if you can provide evidence from recent sales that shows the value has fallen.

If there are any changes to your real estate or timeshare arrangements, you should let us know within 14 days.

Talent on display for runner-up Tassie Cricket team THE Tasmanian Intellectual Disability Cricket team went undefeated at the National Cricket Inclusion Carnival in Brisbane until suffering a close loss to Victoria in the final.

Some standout performances across the competition for Tasmania included a century from Kobe Arrowsmith in round one against Western Australia, multiple 50s and impressive bowling

figures from all-rounder Blake Bonnitcha and strong leadership from playing assistant coach Craig Blaschke.

“Our state cricket teams are run through some great pathway programs and we

can be proud of our efforts this year,” Mr Bonnitcha said.

“There were some strong states with high-quality players including Victoria, South Australia and Queensland at the Carnival.

“The fact that we can challenge, and have done so for the past few years, at the top level is a great achievement.”

Mr Blaschke said the team was mostly unchanged from 2023,

with some key players on the pathway towards representing Australia.

“To have clear pathway for our players to one day achieve their dreams by representing their country is fantastic,” he said.

“The entire team should be incredibly proud of their efforts, there were some strong individual performances and I’m sure we will see many of these players representing Australia very soon.”

Clarence aces Seniors Tennis Championships AFTER a decade-long hiatus, the Australian Seniors Tennis Championships returned to Tasmania in January, serving up plenty of entertainment for more than 1000 attendees.

The Geilston Bay, Rosny Park and Sunshine Tennis Clubs were amongst 10 host clubs based in southern Tasmania with teams from across Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand and China competing in age divisions ranging from 30 to over 85.

Clarence deputy Mayor Allison Richie said she was very proud and impressed with the

amazing work of the local tennis clubs hosting the tournament.

“In addition to the great tennis and smooth coordination the feedback about our host clubs from all those participating in the championships has been amazing,” she said.

Team Tasmania secured wins in the men’s over 65 division one, men’s over 65 division two and women’s over 50 division two, helping Tasmania secure third position overall.

Women’s football celebrated SOME of the biggest names in women’s football, including AFLW star Daisy Pearce, will gather at Blundstone Arena on 3 March for the 2024 International Women’s Day Footy Conference.

AFL Tasmania women and girls lead Amy Bailey said the event would focus on the achievements and progress in the AFLW. “The day will provide an opportunity to share our ambitions, discuss opportunities and plan big for the future of women and girls in footy across Tasmania,” she said.

“We are really excited

to have such incredible people for this event, sharing their wisdom and inspiring us for what’s to come in 2024 and beyond.

“We’ve come a long way in a fairly short timeframe, but we’ve also got a long way to go before we reach equity.”

Attendee and newly appointed West Coast Eagles AFLW coach Daisy Pearce said the women’s game had come so far with higher participation rates and better opportunities to play at the elite level.

“Like millions of Australians, I fell in love with footy at a young age and always

dreamt of holding up the premiership cup on grand final day,” she said.

“Not long after though, I realised that being a girl meant I wouldn’t have the opportunity that my brothers or teammates had. I’m so glad that girls don’t have to go through that anymore and can chase their goals.

“The more girls we have playing our great game the more lives that will be enriched by being a part of a footy team, just like mine has been.”

LINDISFARNE DUO GOING NATIONAL Tasmanian Indigenous squad representatives Brandon Kopper, Tayla Wigg, Jacob Goodsell and Lachlan Nichols

TWO Lindisfarne Cricket Club players have been selected to represent Tasmania at the National Indigenous Cricket Championships at the end of February.

Jacob Goodsell and Lachlan Nichols will travel to Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and proudly represent

their local club, home state and Palawa culture on the national stage from 22 to 27 February.

The squad is being guided by cultural advisor Guy Grey who is supporting both players and coaches with their connection between sport and indigenous culture.

“We are excited to continue our connection with the program, both culturally and through cricket,” Mr Grey said.

“This experience will give our players the opportunity to proudly represent both their families and lutruwita, something that as a team we are extremely proud of.”

Cricket Tasmania general manager of community cricket and head coach Alex King said the entire squad was looking forward to the enriching experience of being part of this tournament.

“We have such a strong history and connection with both the Impaja Cup and

the National Indigenous Cricket Championship and we are again excited to participate in such a remarkable cultural and cricket experience,” he said.

“This season Cricket Tasmania has embarked on the first stage of developing a female program and to have Tayla Wigg represent

the state while playing for Victoria is great.

“We hope to expand on this in the future off the back of strong female growth in cricket across the state.”

The squad will compete against each other state in 20-over matches, followed by a top four finals series.

Three times the fun THE Cremorne Bowls and Community Club welcomed some of the best senior and junior bowlers from across Tasmania for its first ever Triples Challenge from 11 to 12 February.

The event, which featured 20 Tasmanian teams and two state level Northern Territory competitors, offered $13,500 in prize money which made it the biggest lawn bowls carnival in southern Tasmania.

The teams competed for first-place prize

money worth $6000 and a pair of Blundstone boots with the remaining prize money offered down to eighth place.

After two days of tight competition Ashley Banks, Riley Davie and Mitchell Banks were crowned the inaugural winners of the Triples Challenge.

An instrumental member of the winning team throughout the tournament was Gary Banks who unfortunately was not able to play in the final and was replaced by Riley Davie.

“This event was made possible by generous sponsorship from Synergy Home Loans, Origin Mortgage Management Services, Blundstone, Miena Village and Boags Brewery,” Cremorne Bowls and Community Club president Alex Barber said.

“The event was an outstanding success due to the strong support from bowlers and volunteers and we look forward to the Triples Challenge becoming an annual event.”
