CLARENCE CITY COUNCIL Key decisions from council meetings held on Monday, 23 January and Monday, 6 February included: 23 January: • The council meeting scheduled for 16 January was adjourned until Monday 23 January due to traffic disruptions around Greater Hobart.

• Council rejected a request by Chambroad for an extension of time to the buy-back option for land at Kangaroo Bay to allow it to consult with the community on a new proposal.

• Council considered several Notices of Motion in relation to exercising the buyback option within the current Sale and Development Agreement for the Kangaroo Bay hotel site as well as further consultation via Council’s ‘Your Say’ platform.

• Two Notices of Motion were carried, one authorising the CEO to initiate the buy-back process for the Kangaroo Bay hotel site in accordance with the terms set out in the Sale and Development Agreement, while providing Chambroad with the opportunity to publicly consult on its Modified Development proposal, incorporating the Kangaroo Bay land into the City Heart project scope, and the other requesting further consultation with the community on what should happen with the land via council’s ‘Your Say’ platform.

• A development application for an outbuilding at 1 Gordon Street, Richmond was dealt with under delegation following the adjournment of the council meeting of 16 January 2023.

6 February: • Council approved the Draft Victoria Esplanade and Queen Street Master Plan to go out for community consultation at the same time as the next stage of City Heart consultation (March 2023).

• Council approved the granting of almost $32,000 for numerous Land and Coastcare groups.

• Council adopted the Model Code of Conduct and the recently established Councillors’ Statement of Expectations.

• Council endorsed the closure of the public footway through the Cottage School in Bellerive, predominately due to safety concerns.

• Council approved the development application for 30 Balamara Street, Bellerive – change to visitor accommodation.

• Council approved a proposed rezoning and 7 lot subdivision for 30 Holland Court, Howrah.

• Council resolved to lodge an appeal to the Full Court of the Federal Court over the Court’s decision in December dismissing claims against the Commonwealth and Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (HIAPL) in relation to payment and calculation of equivalent rates.

Bike Week 2023 all about the ride TASMANIAN Bike Week is back from 5 March, celebrating everything bike-related with plenty of free social rides, bike counting and bike maintenance help.

Bicycle Network’s Back on your Bike program will be offering free skills session and group rides for people who need help to start riding again, and volunteers will be offering free social rides for people wanting to discover new riding routes and meet people to ride with.

Free social rides in and around Hobart include two rides on kunayi/Mt Wellington, an e-bike ride in Ranelagh, the Brompton bike rally out to Mona, and an International Womens Day ride from Sandy Bay to Taroona.

The annual Super Tuesday commuter cycling count will happen on Tuesday 7 March, with volunteers noting the number of

people riding and scooting across Hobart between 7-9am.

Anyone who becomes a Bicycle Network member in the lead-up to or during the week can score a pair of Bontrager thermal gloves to help them keep riding through the cooler months.

Mates’ epic UK ride for Muscular Dystrophy FORMER ABC broadcaster Peter Gee and his cycling mate Adrian Smith are preparing for an epic journey, with the duo set to ride the length of the United Kingdom in June to raise money for a local family in need.

The challenging ride – which has become known as “LEJOG” as it starts at Land’s End in southern England and ends at John o’ Groats in northern Scotland - will see the duo cycle 1,700 kilometres over 15 days.

Along the way they hope to raise $50,000 to help the family of Bridgewater High School student Declyn Hill, who lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

“Adrian and I have been daydreaming about this ride for years and thought if we did it we’d try to raise as much money as possible for a young Tasmanian

boy whose muscular dystrophy wouldn’t allow him to do such a thing,” Peter said.

“While Declyn is currently mobile, he and his parents are working with an occupational therapist to get a wheelchair for him.

“With a new wheelchair will come the need for a wheelchairaccessible vehicle and a ramp at their home.”

Muscular Dystrophy Tasmania president Michael Peters said the charity will greatly appreciate the money raised by the pair.

“Declyn’s family are facing some challenges in the future, as Duchenne muscular dystrophy sees muscle condition deteriorate over time and mobility becomes more difficult,” he said.

“We regularly fundraise for things like wheelchairs, ramps, wheelchair accessible

motor vehicles and hydrotherapy pools.

“All money donated to Peter and Adrian’s ride will go directly to helping Declyn and his family purchase a wheelchairaccessible vehicle, so people know that their donation will absolutely be making a difference.”

Co-Op Toyota has agreed to sell MDT a vehicle at cost price.

The ride is also being supported by Cor Comms, Creative Imagery, John X Presents, Coles Bay Triathlon, The

Tasman Hotel and Trail Science.

A series of fundraising events will be held in the lead-up to the ride, including a concert in March and a gala cabaret night in May. You can follow their adventures on the Muscular Dystrophy Tasmania Facebook page and through their podcast, ‘Pushing It Up Hill’, on Spotify and Apple Music.

GARDENING IN FEBRUARY Spring bulbs are starting to appear in the shops now, and if you are planning to add some to your garden or pots, it is the early shopper who gets the best choice.

When choosing your bulbs always look to make sure that they are in good condition. They should be firm to touch, with no sign of damage or mould.

Tulips, hyacinths and daffodils should have their papery covering intact or the bulbs will start to shrink. Ranunculus and anemones are small and look quite shrivelled but this is normal. Ranunculus have claws and it is important that these are not broken off and sitting in the bottom of the bag.

You may be lucky when buying some bulbs like daffodils and find some with a double tip - these often give you two flowers for the price of on and are great for pots.

Always choose a pack of bulbs where the bulbs look quite fat for their type, as these bulbs have stored a lot of food in the previous year and will give strong growth.

In Tasmania there is no need to place your bulbs in the fridge; just store them in the shed or garage where it is cool and dark. Plant your bulbs in late March or April for a lovely spring display.

Meet Tassie’s first guide dog puppies THE first guide dog puppies ever born in the state, adorable Dora and Digby will one day support a Tasmanian in need.

Born in November 2022 in the outskirts of Hobart, Dora and Digby are the first litter of threeyear-old Tasmanian-raised guide dog Freda.

Guide Dogs Tasmania CEO Anna Presser said the birth of the puppies was a very happy occasion for the organisation.

“Guide Dogs Tasmania has been supporting people in our community for more than 50 years and we are delighted to share the news of these gorgeous puppies,” she said.

“With expert training provided by the staff and volunteers of Guide Dogs Tasmania they will go on to change the lives of people living in the Tasmanian community.”

Guide Dogs Tasmania program manager Kim Ryan said Dora and Digby would help to meet increasing needs in Tasmania.

“Guide and assistance dogs change the world for Tasmanians living with low vision, disability and illness

– they offer people in our community independence, safety and inclusion,” she said.

“We are currently seeking volunteer raisers who can take puppies into their homes and help socialise and raise them before they go onto formal training.

“New volunteers will mean our program can grow and we can help even more Tasmanians in need.”

Joyce gets OAM for keeping textile history alive Mackenzie Archer EASTERN Shore resident Joyce Mackey has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her commitment to preserving Tasmania’s unique textile history.

For the past 35 years Joyce has been volunteering three days a week at the Narryna Heritage Museum in Battery Point, identifying and researching materials and clothing that are significant to the state’s history.

After giving up work in 1984 to care for her husband, Joyce spent much of her time designing and making ballet costumes for her two daughters and practising the art of lace.

“Working with textiles is something I have always done, so when I was approached by the museum to help sort its collection I said yes,” she said.

Planning to be there for only six weeks, Joyce is now one of Narryna’s

longest-serving volunteer staff members.

Joyce said she felt humbled to receive an Order of Australia Medal.

“When I initially received the news I thought it was a scam, I thought it couldn’t be real,” she said.

“One does things without thinking of a medal at the end. You just do things because you want to see things through.

“The award was a lovely reminder that people really do appreciate the work that I do.”

Just shy of 83-yearsold, Joyce is still working at Narryna three days a week and teaching lace one day a week.

“If someone does not share this knowledge these ancient artforms will be forgotten,” she said.

“I feel proud to be preserving a significant part of Tasmania’s history and I will continue to do so for as long as I can.”

Cephalopod in Clarence AN enormous ocean creature will call Kangaroo Bay home next month, when a show-stopping installation splashes down as part of the Ten Days on the Island festival.

Māori artist Lisa Reihana’s work ‘Te Wheke-a-Muturangi’ is sure to draw curious crowds to the foreshore when the brightly coloured giant octopus goes on display from 8-19 March.

In Māori mythology, Te Wheke-a-Muturangi is the giant octopus chased

by Kupe, the legendary Polynesian navigator who discovered Aotearoa New Zealand.

Now the giant octopus from that story has travelled across the Tasman Sea to share her tale in Clarence, as part of a partnership between the Clarence City Council and Ten Days on the Island designed to boost the city’s arts and cultural opportunities.

“Bringing world-class festivals like Ten Days on the Island to the City of Clarence has so many benefits,” Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said.

“Culturally the people of Clarence can easily access incredible events and artworks, but also economically it benefits the community by giving visitors another reason to visit as well as the locals getting out and about.

When neighbours become good friends COMMUNITY connections will be celebrated in Clarence next month on the fifth annual Neighbour Day, with nominations now open for Neighbour of the Year.

Neighbour Day encourages people to reach out and connect with those

around them and across all their communities.

Neighbour Day has been running across Australia for more than 20 years and has been recognised by Clarence City Council since 2017.

The council presents a number of awards as part

of its annual Neighbour Day celebrations, which will this year be held on Sunday 26 March.

Last year’s Neighbour of the Year winners, Basil and Helen Murray, are known for always lending a hand, mowing the nature strips, looking after neighbours’

properties, and organising big Christmas and Easter parties for all the children.

Nicole Howard, who nominated the couple for the award, said she simply couldn’t ask for better neighbours.

Eastern Shore spirits soar at Gin-uary event EASTERN Shore distilleries were well represented at Tasmania’s popular annual ‘Gin-uary’ gin festival last month.

Local producers with stalls at the event included Cambridge’s Section 44 Distillery, Southarm Craft Distillery from Halfmoon Bay, and Killara Distillery which is just north of Richmond.

This was the third consecutive year Section 44 Distillery has been at Gin uary. Co-owner Stephen Parry, who is also Vice-President of the Tasmanian Whisky and Spirits Association, said the state is producing fine awardwinning gins.

“We really enjoy Gin-uary, it enables us to showcase our fine gins and interact with hundreds of gin enthusiasts,” he said.

“It also provides an opportunity to mix with fellow Tasmanian gin producers.

“Tasmanian gin producers currently enjoy not only a local reputation for quality gin, but a national and international one.

“I am very proud of what Tasmanian gin manufacturing has achieved.”

Clarence Councillor Daniel Hulme attended the festival, visiting the stalls of local distilleries to congratulate them on their success.

Cr Hulme said Tasmania was rapidly growing a reputation for world-class spirits, and it was great to see Clarence getting a slice of the action.

“Spirits are a great complement to our quality wineries and craft breweries in the

Coal River Valley, which I am pleased to see continuing to gain greater recognition as a destination in its own right,” he said.

“The visitor economy throughout other areas

of Clarence, such as the South Arm Peninsula, has so much untapped potential, and I appreciate the efforts of our unique and innovative distilleries are making to help us realise this potential.”

Crowds to flock to Bream Creek Show

FAMOUS for its ride-on lawnmower race and giant vegetable growing competition, the Bream Creek Show will be pulling out all the stops when the much-loved event celebrates 120 years next month.

To celebrate the milestone, ‘Muster Dogs’ star Frank Finger will attend the show with his kelpie Annie for an exclusive Tasmanian appearance.

Travelling from their cattle station in Queensland, the pair will showcase their famous bond with two working dog displays, while also giving fans the chance to meet them.

Show favourites returning to the main arena include the famous ride-on lawnmower race,

the tree felling state championships, and horse barrel racing.

Patrons will also have the opportunity to win a new pair of boots in the ‘Toss the Blunnie’ competition; take part in the rural iron woman and iron man events; and race in the human vs horse vs motorbike race.

Around the grounds there will be plenty to see, including the paddock to plate stage highlighting some of the area’s best local producers, cooks, butchers and growers.

There’ll also be chainsaw sculpting, wool and shearing displays, a reptile display, an animal nursery, vintage cars and machinery, plus a wide selection of stallholders and food vendors from across the region.

“Our point of difference is that we don’t have any rides or showbags,” Bream Creek Show president Chris Cusick said.

“We position our event as a great day out with all of attractions and entertainment included in the gate price.

“As it’s our 120th event we’ll pay tribute to our history, but for the most part we will continue our tradition of being the little country show with the big country heart.”

The show will run from 9am-5pm on Saturday 18 March.

Entry costs $10 for adults and $5 for children (plus booking fee).

School supplies drive Chris banking on helping kids to learn a brighter future for planet Earth THE start of the school year can be a tough time for parents who are struggling to keep up with the cost of living, with some families having to make sacrifices to pay for the school supplies and stationery their kids need to learn.

To make sure no student misses out, a dedicated team of volunteers and sponsors have teamed up with local Neighbourhood Houses to provide more than 160 school supply packs for Eastern Shore families who need a bit of help.

The school supply packs included brand new stationery, lunchboxes, drink bottles and backpacks donated by members of the community. They were distributed with help of the Neighbourhood Houses in Risdon Vale, Clarendon Vale, Rokeby and Warrane.

Franklin MP David O’Byrne, who organises the school supplies drive each year, said the demand for supplies has never been greater.

“The sad reality is that some kids don’t get the most basic stationery and supplies they need for school if their parents are unable to afford it,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“It’s absolutely vital that all Tasmanian students have the school supplies they need to learn. But sadly, with rising cost of living pressures, more and more families are struggling to afford the necessities.

“But thanks to a terrific team of volunteers and donors, and the vital work of our Neighbourhood Houses, we were able to ensure that more than 160 students have what they need to start the school year on the right track.”

A SIMPLE but impactful action an individual can take to help the planet is to choose banking, superannuation and insurance options which support ethical and climate-safe investments.

A passionate advocate for change, Howrah resident Chris Lang volunteers his time to educate friends and family about the importance of considering finances in climate action.

Clarence Climate Action have chosen Chris as this month’s Climate Champion for the positive steps he has taken to support his family and friends in getting their money to work for a better future.

“Growing up in Tasmania has taught me the significance of community and wilderness, and how important it is to keep them healthy,” Chris said.

“Those who get this, understand the importance of doing what we can to protect and improve our society and environment.

“Our choice of bank is something we rarely consider. Many of us are still with the first bank we ever used.

Because of this, making a change is very powerful. What kind of world do we want our savings to support in the future?"

Chris says there are also powerful choices to be made when considering superannuation.

"Money is such a powerful lever to pull,” he said.

Sale helps women Dress for Success DRESS for Success’ annual clothing sale Bubbles & Bargains is set to help more Tasmanian women in need.

A not-for-profit organisation run by a small team of staff and volunteers, Dress for Success is on a mission is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and life.

The organisation runs regular clothing drives to enable members of the community to donate good quality professional attire and accessories.

On 23 February, the Wilson Homes offices in Murray St will be transformed into a second-hand boutique for Bubbles & Bargains, where shoppers can find a mix of pre-loved designer, high street and unique fashion plus shoes, handbags and accessories in near-new condition.

Dress for Success CEO Amanda French said more than 400 items of clothing were sold at last year’s event.

“Bubbles & Bargains is our signature sale event and this year we are hoping to raise $10,000,” she said.

“The funds raised on the night are crucial for our future financial stability and a great opportunity to refresh the boutique.

“We want to offer our clients current and on-trend fashion items when they come in for an appointment and this sale allows us to re-home our clothes in a sustainable way.

Disaster Relief Australia is looking for local volunteers VETERAN-led volunteer organisation Disaster Relief Australia (DRA) now has a team in Tasmania and is recruiting new members.

Founded in 2016, DRA helps Australian communities rebuild after disasters such as floods, bushfires and cyclones. It offers veterans a chance to continue their service by assisting and empowering those afflicted by disasters.

The organisation unites the skills and experiences of Australian Defence Force veterans, emergency responders and everyday Australians to rapidly deploy disaster relief teams to assist communities in need.

Volunteers are deployed post-disaster to assist with debris removal, home repairs and maintenance, and to provide safe, practical and structured on-theground support.

A welcome addition to the state’s disaster relief efforts, the new Tasmanian Disaster Relief Team (DRT) is the latest addition to a national network with more than 2,500 volunteers and nine DRTs across the country.

To date, DRA has deployed its volunteers to more than 25

disaster relief operations. The Tasmanian team has already been busy on the ground, assisting last year’s recovery effort after a cyclonic wind event in the state’s north-west.

“We put the experience, skills and discipline of veterans and civilian counterparts to practical use in communities that are experiencing their worst days,” Tasmania DRT manager Scott Whiley said.

“Tasmania fights well above its weight when it comes to military history and helping mates in distress.

“Our veterans work alongside

PUBLIC speaking training organisation Rostrum Tasmania will help almost 100 members across the state to stand up and speak with confidence during 2023.

Rostrum is an Australia-wide, volunteer-run organisation that helps members develop speaking and meeting procedure skills for workplace forums, business presentations, job interviews,

community organisations and family occasions - essential skills for those who aspire to parliamentary or other elected positions.

The seven Tasmanian Rostrum clubs recently started another year of coaching and encouragement to help members achieve their goals, assisted by accredited coaches and development programs that provide tutorials and a range

emergency services personnel and civilians and establish connections with people outside of the military and develop rapport with individuals and communities recovering from a disaster.

“We help communities and we help our volunteers.”

DRA provides full volunteer training including first aid, chainsaw training and 4x4 driving.

NINETY more defibrillators will be rolled out in locations across Tasmania in the coming months, including one at a popular Lindisfarne café.

The successful applicants of the second round of the Community Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Fund have been selected, including Currency Café in Lindisfarne.

Local Liberal Member for Franklin Dean Young welcomed the

news, saying Currency Café was an ideal location for a community AED. “When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every single minute counts,” Mr Young said.

“Having an AED at Currency Café will ensure locals will have easy access to this lifesaving device, which is incredibly simple to use without any training and is audioequipped to guide the user through the procedure.

“The Ambulance Tasmania smart phone app shows locations of AEDs right across the state, along with directions on how to access them should the need arise.”

Mr Young said the latest round of AEDs fulfils the State Government’s 2021 election policy to invest in a further 180 defibrillators for rural and remote communities in Tasmania over two financial years, following the delivery of 180 community defibrillators in 2018/19.

Edmunds gets elevated LABOR Member of the Legislative Council for Pembroke, Luke Edmunds, has been promoted to Shadow Cabinet.

State Labor Leader Rebecca White announced last month that Luke would be elevated to the Shadow Cabinet, taking on the portfolios of Local Government, Planning and Disability.

Having served on the Clarence City

Council for nearly four years before entering parliament, Luke knows local government well and wants to progress sensible planning reform to support the economy and our community, and build the houses needed to address the growing housing crisis.

He is looking forward to engaging closely with the council to help address some of the challenges on the Eastern Shore, including

the acute shortage of rental properties.

As the father of a child with a disability, Luke also knows firsthand the challenges faced by people living with a disability and their families, and he is keen to advocate strongly for improvements in the disability sector.

“I’m passionate about all three of my new portfolios and I know they’re all issues

people on the Eastern Shore care about, so it’s good to have portfolios relevant to my community,” he said.

“I’m already out and about taking on board ideas and look forward to hearing from community members on their views on Local Government, Planning and Disability.”

Luke is still available to help in other priority areas such as health and cost of living.

Ten Days of magic and myth

ROSNY Library will celebrate the joy of reading, writing and books at next month’s Twilight Reading Fair.

The library lawns will come alive on Thursday 9 March for the fair, which is one of many events Libraries Tasmania is running across the state as part of the first ever Tasmania Reads week (5 – 11 March).

Planned activities at the fair include author talks, Clarence’s Biggest Book Swap, reading and book-related crafts, badge-making, a LEGO challenge and a scavenger hunt, and much more.

The event will also showcase a range of different and exciting services on offer at Rosny Library as well as in the wider community.

A range of community and other groups will be running pop-up stalls, including Clarence City Council and Mission Australia’s YouthBeat.

Clarence Council Youth Services’ mobile activities centre will be there, with sumo suits and outdoor games. Bunnings is also supporting the fair by running a fun, hands-on activity for kids.

The Bellerive Historical Society will have a display and Rosny Library’s family history volunteer, Sue Wyatt, will talk about her family history journey and being a blogger.

There will be a free barbecue, or people can bring their own food and picnic outside on the lawns.

IT’S not every day that a giant octopus from Aotearoa New Zealand takes up residence in the waters of Kangaroo Bay. Ten Days on the Island and Clarence City Council have invited the Māori mythological goddess ‘Te Wheke-a-Muturangi’ – an awe-inspiring and fantastical installation of epic proportions - to journey across the Tasman during the festival this March.

In Māori mythology, Te Wheke-a-Muturangi is the giant octopus chased by Kupe, the legendary Polynesian navigator who discovered Aotearoa New Zealand.

During their epic chase, Kupe dealt many blows to Te Wheke, which eventually killed her. A red sunset reflecting on the sea is considered the blood let during their legendary battle.

Centuries later, the giant octopus from that story has travelled across the Tasman Sea to share her tale.

‘Te Wheke-a-Muturangi’ is the creation of multi-disciplinary Māori artist Lisa Reihana, whose renowned video work ‘In Pursuit of Venus [infected]’ garnered worldwide acclaim at the 2017 Venice Biennale.

Throughout Ten Days on the Island, the giant colourful ‘Te Wheke-a-Muturangi’ will sit majestically amongst the boats beneath Kunanyi/Mount Wellington in the waters of Kangaroo Bay. Bring the family

Eastern Shore’s boutique brew AUDREY Coffee is filling a gap on the Eastern Shore by offering locals a boutique coffee experience.

Owner Pete Ladyman opened the first Audrey store in Rosny Park after seeing a lack of specialty coffee options for people living and working on the Eastern Shore.

“When I opened the Rosny Park store in 2019 there were no specialty focused cafes and it was clear the community was missing that,” he said.

Mr Ladyman opened a second store in Rokeby in 2020 and has plans to go even further.

“We wanted Audrey Coffee to be something that the Eastern Shore community could call their own,” he said.

“We are focused on offering amazing customer service and creating a warm, inviting environment for customers to enjoy their daily coffee.”

During the summer months Audrey Coffee host regular events and pop-ups to connect the local community.

“We have previously run our Easy Sundays breakfast series, have collaborated with Lucinda Wine Bar/ Dier Makr on a pastry popup, and run an exclusive pour-over bar featuring a specialty coffee roaster from Belfast,” Mr Ladyman said.

“We like to keep things fun and fresh and hosting these events is just one way to keep our staff and local community engaged.

“We aim to foster a real sense of community in our local area, be as sustainable as possible, and aim to give back as much as we can.

“We're very meticulous and precise about the way we brew our coffee, and have a lot of systems, training and workflow in place to help us be as consistent and fast as possible during daily service.

“We have a huge retail shelf in both venues, stocked full to the brim with the latest beans and pods, coffee brewing equipment and coffeerelated merchandise. We also have an extensive online shop range and grab-and-go food options on offer daily.

“Our menu offerings are quite streamlined at our venues, with a focus on grab-and-go style items.

“We serve a range of Pigeon Hole pastry, Collide and Baked glutenfree treats. We also have a chef knocking out weekly rotating gourmet housemade filled baguettes.”

“In our culture, our tradition, we are taught that if you see someone going through a hard time, you go and help them,” he said.

“People really appreciated it. Some would make a donation, and we’d put that money towards making the next week even bigger.

“In my religion, we help a lot of people – there’s a Sikh temple in Cambridge and each Sunday there is free meals for anyone who comes.”

Watch out for wildlife on Tasmania’s roads THE warmer months and lighter evenings can see many of us spending longer outside, travelling the state and visiting friends and family.

Sadly, our enthusiasm for getting out and about in summer also increases incidents of injured and killed wildlife on our roads. Hobart Airport are reminding everyone to watch out for wildlife on Tasmanian roads and help reduce the number of animal deaths and injuries in our state.

‘Watch out for Wildlife’ is an ongoing campaign between Hobart Airport and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, in place since 2018.

Passengers arriving into the state are greeted by “Wendy” and “Walter” the wallaby figures in the terminal, along with ‘Watch out for Wildlife’ signage on bins and a large road sign - all aimed at increasing awareness of the need to take care on Tasmanian roads.

Hobart Airport has taken further steps to focus on the roads surrounding the airport, in an effort to find a

permanent solution to the roadkill problem.

Virtual fencing was installed near the airport to deter wildlife from the road, reducing the number of injured animals and the costs of vehicle damage.

“The virtual fencing is activated by approaching headlights, which causes it to emit a combination of sound and flashing light stimuli that alert animals and in turn reduces the startling effect,” Hobart Airport’s head of Environment and Sustainability, Nicole Sherriff, said.

“In its first year we saw a 70 per cent reduction in roadkill along this road, and it continues to be effective today.”

The campaign acknowledges the work of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary staff and volunteers, who accept thousands of injured animals each year to rehabilitate and return to the wild.

Many of these animals will recover and be released back into their natural habitat. But a significant number remain

at the sanctuary as they can no longer fend for themselves in the wild, because of permanent injury.

“We encourage everyone, locals and visitors, to slow down on our roads between dusk and dawn when wildlife is most active,” Nicole said.

Watch out for Wildlife top tips: • Slow down on Tasmanian roads between dusk and dawn.

• Don’t swerve at animals - slow down and brake.

• Don’t throw food from the car, as this attracts wildlife to the roadside.

• Call Bonorong on 0447 264 625 for injured or orphaned wildlife.

Finally, consider becoming a wildlife rescuer. Bonorong provides training to volunteers on how to safely rescue and assist with injured animals and their babies.

Stepping up to Stage Two Jo Cordell-Cooper

LAST year I shared with you that I am training for the Larapinta Trail - 230km along the West MacDonald Ranges in Central Australia - and I’m intending to do this in July.

While most believe the best way to prepare for multi day hikes is to hike more, I am applying my personal training expertise to get fit for hiking in a more time-effective way.

I outlined my Stage One 10week plan in that article, which can be viewed at https://jocc. com.au/hiking-fit-larapinta My ultimate goal was to be able to hike for eight hours without being sore, as I was currently getting sore at the sixhour mark.

Unfortunately, I hit a snag – COVID, which flattened me

for a few weeks and required a step back from physical training.

I had to cancel my two planned weekend overnight hikes and postpone my long day hikes.

Recovering from COVID was straightforward for me - except when it wasn’t. Fatigue can come on quickly, so even when you feel well I’d recommend not going anywhere too remote.

I found electrolytic drinks invaluable. They are often used to aid recovery when dehydrated.

Following my first postCOVID hike my whole body was sore, and this is not only a sign of inadequate fitness but also that the virus is not totally cleared from the body. I focused on a few more restorative activities such as aqua aerobics, foam rollering, swimming and massage.

I felt ready to tackle another long day hike and we picked Adamson’s Peak near Dover.

This is a 17km hike with 1km of up and down. It took nine hours and ticked all the boxes terrain-wise: rocky, hard, and plenty of scree.

I was delighted that all the little fitness-building activities I had done to restore my health had helped. I wasn’t sore muscle-wise, but my knees were sore for days.

So, moving forward, my training must contain plenty of relentless incline and decline (joy). I must be strong and balanced enough to not jar my knees on the hills.

Stage 2 – 20 weeks to go: Goal – to be able to hike eight hours without muscle soreness, two days back-to-back,

wearing a heavy pack (10kgplus) What – build endurance, core strength and dynamic balance by wearing a weighted pack, even on short walks How – two multi-day hikes. I’ll continue wearing a heavy pack on my Friday NIGHT beginners hiking session, and restorative practises such as foam rollering, aqua, massage and stretching.

REGISTRATIONS are now open for a spectacular bushwalk which raises vital funds for stroke prevention and education.

Local charity Tasmanian Iconic Walks’ fifth annual fundraising hike will be held on Saturday 1 April in a new location, at Mt Field National Park.

The Tasmanian Iconic Walk organisation and hike were inspired

by TIW founder Jo Cordell-Cooper’s father Ron, who suffered two strokes and dealt with poor health for a further four years before sadly passing away.

Ms Cordell-Cooper said many strokes can be prevented through lifestyle choices, and being physically active reduces your risk.

“I am incredibly proud of the walk and the people who have

made it a success so far by lacing up their hiking boots, raising funds and taking part,” she said.

“They have raised $165,778 for stroke prevention and education charities in the past, a cause close to my heart.

“At the same time, the participants have taken steps to reduce their own stroke risk by being physically active.”

Hikers form teams of

four for the event, with participants challenged to raise $250 each.

This year, TIW is partnering with the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, who will use 100 per cent of funds raised to develop their Preventing Stroke MOOC (free online course).

“We are also thrilled to be welcoming back two of our strongest supporters and

champion fundraisers, Matt Picone and Nic Stevens,” Ms CordellCooper said.

“Both Matt and Nic are stroke survivors, who have tackled the walk in previous years and raised significant sums towards our charity of choice.”

As 2023 commenced, staff at RSPCA Tasmania have been surprised and delighted to receive so many enquiries and bookings for the new RSPCA Tasmania AWARE program.

This inaugural program for 2023 is a completely free, educational opportunity for kids, parents and community groups of all ages to access presentations, educational modules of training and an extensive knowledgebase of information and articles; raising awareness about animals from all walks of life and how best to understand, look after, seek help and be actively involved in positive animal experiences.

Each initial presentation is conducted by members of the statewide

educational outreach team and is tailored to each audience from kindergarten through to college, community, cultural and special interest groups.

These presentations can be held off-site at kindergartens, schools, colleges, Scout/Guide hall and community centers, or on-site at the RSPCA Tasmania Outreach Centre in Hobarts northern suburbs.

Presentations are about 40 minutes long and promise to be interesting, entertaining and engaging and are designed to leave all participants, families and educators, with access pathways to explore their interests through free further training modules and topics over the course of 2023,

HICCUP is a beautiful cat who came to Ten Lives Cat Centre as a stray with a distinctive wonky walk. It was believed that she had likely been hit by a car and although she had survived the initial trauma, she was still suffering.

The Ten Lives Vet Team examined her and sent her off for x-rays where it was discovered that she had suffered a broken pelvis, fractured upper canines, and a fractured jaw. Her poorly healed pelvis resulted in her trouble walking.

Although this adorable kitty was making the most of the life given to her, Ten Lives needed to act quickly to give her the second chance she deserved.

Hiccup’s pain was being managed by medication, but she

needed surgery to move on with her life. Ten Lives did not have the facilities to perform this type of orthopaedic hip procedure, but fortunately, the good people at Hobart Community Veterinary Hospital were able to provide a theatre in which the talented Ten Lives vet team could operate.

Although this significantly reduced the cost of the procedure, Ten Lives still required $5,200 to cover all the expenses of her rehabilitation.

Fortunately, Hiccup’s jaw fracture had healed and was not causing her discomfort, but her upper canines had to be removed, which could be done on-site.

Thanks to a crowd funding campaign, funds for Hiccup’s surgery were raised within just 18 hours and Hiccup went into surgery in

December. Anxiously, the staff waited to hear the result.

“Dr Evelyn Woods performed the surgery and it went as planned to great success Hiccup’s hip joint was removed and she is recovering well,” Ten Lives head vet Emma Flittner said after the surgery.

Hiccup was then placed in foster care, where she could start her extensive rehabilitation.

Ten Lives would like to thank all those who contributed financially to the treatment of this resilient little cat and also to Hobart Community Veterinary Hospital for their support in providing the theatre where our vet team could complete the procedure.

“We are immensely grateful for the support of the community and HCVH that has allowed us to give this cat the

treatment she needs,” centre manager Noel Hunt said.

‘We successfully raised $6,886 and the money exceeding our goal will be used to treat other cats just like Hiccup.”

Hiccup still has a long road ahead of her, but one thing we can say about this cat is that she is a fighter. With the support and resources of Ten Lives, she is one step closer to the adoption rooms.

Hiccup is still completing her rehabilitation in foster care, but it won’t be long before she returns to the centre to be cleared for adoption.

Ten Lives Cat Centre is a self-funded animal charity that relies on donations and volunteers to care for and rehome the unwanted cats and kittens of Tasmania.

Welcome to the New Year.

From 1 January 2023, there were two changes made to the Age Pension that could influence decisions you might make in the future.

Increase in the assets test exemption period for funds from the sale of your home: If you sell your family home after 1 January, you have more time to look for a new home.

The amount you got from the sale that you intend to use on your new home is now exempt from the assets test for up to two years. In some circumstances, the exemption can be extended up to three years.

Even though the asset value is exempt, there will be income deemed from the funds. For properties sold after 1 January, the income will be deemed at

the lower deeming rate, currently 0.25 per cent.

It’s important to know that the assets test exemption and lower deeming rate only apply to money from the sale that you plan to use to purchase (buy or build) your new home.

These changes mean selling and downsizing will have less of an impact on your fortnightly pension than it did before.

This extended period means: • If your income reduces or stops within the two-year period, you don’t have to reapply for the pension, you can just get it restarted. So it’s much easier to get on the pension again.

• You remain eligible for your Pensioner Concession Card for the two-year period, until your pension is then cancelled.

Extended employment suspension period: From 1 January, Services Australia has made it easier to get back on a pension if it stopped because you were earning too much.

If you start getting income from employment and receive $0 Age Pension for more than six fortnights, you’ll be advised your payment and income reporting requirements have been suspended.

This has always been the case, though now you’ll have two years before your payment is cancelled.

If you and your partner are both on a pension, then you can both take advantage of the extended employment suspension period even if only one of you is working.

With the changes to the Work Bonus that came in in December last year, extending the employment suspension period makes it even easier for people on an Age Pension to earn extra income from employment if they want to.

WITH inflation at its highest peak since the 1980s it is understandable that some people are worried about their money not lasting in retirement. The rise in inflation reduces the value of your buying power unless your money is growing in line with the current rate of inflation which is 7.8 per cent.

If you’re retired or planning your retirement, it is vitally important that you understand what your income needs are and how you are going to generate that income.

This will go a long way in helping your money survive high inflation times.

Start by writing down your essential expenses and nonessential expenses. This will be the backbone of your retirement plan and help to structure your retirement savings portfolio appropriately.

As a guide, the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) estimates that for a couple aged between 6584 to have a comfortable lifestyle in retirement they will need an income of $68,014 per annum and for a modest lifestyle in retirement they will need an income of $44,034.

While every retirement is different, comparing your income needs with ASFA guidelines can help to see how you compare.

In order to support the abovementioned

income, ASFA further estimates that at age 67 for a couple to have a comfortable retirement the amount they need to have saved is $640,000 and for a modest retirement the amount they need to have saved is $545,000.

With these guidelines in mind, the amount of money you need saved heading into retirement depends on your own situation, lifestyle expectations, wants and needs.

For example, if your goal is to preserve your money in retirement, the rule of thumb is that your investments will need to earn what you’re drawing out as income, achieving this goal will mostly depend on how your money is invested and how much money you have.

Ultimately, the amount you need or have for retirement is very personal. No matter the balance of your retirement savings it is always important that you regularly review them to ensure you are on track to achieve your retirement goals.

While superannuation is a common way to help fund your retirement, not everyone has the comfort of a healthy super balance and it’s not your only option to help generate income in retirement.

Alternatively, you may help fund your retirement using income from an investment property or even by downsizing your house to free up some money.

Also, depending on your assets and income

you might be eligible to receive an Age Pension.

Currently, the maximum entitlement for a member of a couple who are homeowners is $773.80 each per fortnight, which is a reliable source of income that can help meet income needs.

There are many things you can do to prepare for a comfortable retirement, and there are many things you can do once you’re retired to make things a bit more comfortable.

Retiring is one of the biggest financial changes you will go through, so why would you go it alone? What interest rate rises mean for you THE Reserve Bank of Australia has hiked interest rates for the ninth consecutive time, making it even more important for borrowers to shop around for a better home loan deal.

At its February board meeting, the RBA lifted the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 3.35 per cent – its highest level since September 2012.

RBA governor Philip Lowe said winning the war against inflation remained a top priority.

“High inflation makes life difficult for people and damages the functioning of the economy,” Mr Lowe said in a statement.

“The Board is seeking to return inflation to the 2-3 per cent range while keeping the economy on an even keel, but the path to achieving a soft landing remains a narrow one.”

Mr Lowe warned further rate rises could be needed in the months ahead to ensure inflation cools.

The latest move was widely expected and PropTrack director of economic research Cameron Kusher said there was no other choice.

“Despite signs of a marginal easing in inflationary pressures, with the highest rate of inflation recorded in decades it was a pretty easy decision for the RBA to continue to increase interest rates this month,” Mr Kusher said.

Mr Kusher believes relief is in sight, with signs that inflation might have peaked, which should see pressures will ease from here.

“We’re already seeing a slowdown in growth in producer prices,” he said.

“Retail trade has shown early signs that it may have started to stall, while home prices continue to fall and demand for housing finance is continuing to slump.”

Mr Kusher believes one more interest rate rise of 25 basis points is likely this year, bringing the cash rate to 3.6 per cent, at which point the RBA will sit tight.

However, a raft of economic data is due to come in before the board meets next in early March.

Borrowers should hunt for savings Nine back-to-back rate hikes have put significant financial pressure on borrowers, Mortgage

Choice chief executive Anthony Waldron said.

“If you haven’t asked your mortgage broker to review your mortgage in the past 12 months, now is a great time to chat to an expert and start your year off on the right foot,” Mr Waldron said.

“I encourage all borrowers to take control of their home loans and be proactive about getting a better deal.”

For borrowers with $500,000 outstanding on their home loan, the February hike could add an additional $80 to their monthly mortgage repayments.

Those with a mortgage balance of $750,000 will pay an extra $121 a month, while those with a $1 million loan balance will cough up an extra $161 per month.

Since May 2021, Aussies with a $500,000 mortgage could see the combined cost of the nine consecutive rate hikes total more than $960 per month – a staggering $11,556 more a year.

And for a borrower with $1 million outstanding on their home loan, the combined cost blows out to more than $1900 extra each month.

Mortgage Choice home loan application data shows that the vast majority of borrowers are prepared to ride out the wave.

Demand for variable rate home loan products remains steady, with 94 per cent of borrowers choosing this type of product over fixed rates in January, Mr Waldron said.

Impact on home prices Soaring interest rates have seen mortgage costs skyrocket and borrowing power plummet, with housing markets across the country impacted as a result.

The latest PropTrack Home Price Index shows values nationally slipped 0.09 per cent in January and are now 4.51 per cent below their peak.

PropTrack senior economist Eleanor Creagh, who authored the report, said the RBA’s aggressive approach to rates was largely to blame.

“However, the worst of the downturn appears to have passed,” Ms Creagh said.

“The rapid pace of price falls seen in June and July 2022 when interest rates first started rising have subsided and price falls have

eased in recent months.”

And while prices nationally have dropped 4.51 per cent from their peak, they remain a staggering 28.5 per cent higher than they were pre-Covid.

Tasmanian DSA helps everyone catch the wave THE Eastern Shore community is supporting Tasmanians living with a disability to learn how to surf – and you can help out.

The Tasmanian Disabled Surfers Association will hold its second round of ‘Let’s go surfing’ events at Carlton Park Life Saving Club on 26 February and 19 March, with 60 Tasmanians living with a disability set to have a go at surfing.

Tasmanian Disabled Surfing Association president Shaned Gaffney said the events would provide participants with an inclusive, safe and fun experience.

“Over a two-hour timeslot, the participants will be pushed onto

waves, down a corridor of volunteers cheering them on,” she said.

“This is a really unique opportunity for people living with a disability to try something completely new.

“You can just forget about your limitations when you are in the water and riding a wave.”

The Tasmanian Disabled Surfing Association is still searching for volunteers to help at the two events, with more than 120 volunteers needed to ensure the events run smoothly.

“At our first event our volunteers took away a lot more than what they anticipated,” Shaned said.

“I think it took a lot of people by surprise just how important this event was for both the disabled community and the broader local community.

“Seeing the joy on the participants faces when they were riding the waves and feeling the support of the community was just magical – it felt like a real celebration.”

The organisation is planning to expand its services and give more Tasmanians living with a disability the opportunity to enjoy the state’s beaches.

Ace results for NBL team hits Jackpot for charity Clarence Open

THE Tasmania JackJumpers’ nest turned teal recently for the team’s second annual Teal Game, raising more than $55,000 for local gynaecological charity S.H.E [Support, Hope, Education].

The JackJumpers wore special teal uniforms and socks for their sold-out NBL clash against the Perth Wildcats at MyState Bank Arena on January 29, with many fans also dressing up for the occasion.

The JackJumpers trailed by nine points early in the final quarter but stormed home to run out 102-94 winners, thrilling the vocal home crowd.

Imports Milton Doyle and Rashard Kelly led the way with 21 and 18 points respectively,

with fan favourite Jack McVeigh also contributing 18.

The team’s gameworn jerseys were signed and auctioned off after the game. Centre Will Magnay’s shoes were also up for grabs, fetching $2700.

JackJumpers partners SRT Logistics and MyState Bank also donated to S.H.E for every three-pointer and steal the JackJumpers racked up during the game.

While the game was sold out well in advance, fans watching from home could buy a ‘virtual seat’ in the stadium, with the proceeds going to S.H.E. The match built on the success of last February’s inaugural Teal Game, which raised more

than $27,000 for the Tasmanian non-for-profit organisation. It is working towards building a cancer wellness centre in the Hobart CBD. The JackJumpers partnership with S.H.E is motivated by a lack of awareness around gynaecological cancers and the need for men to be part of the conversation and breaking down any stigma.

The cause holds special significance for the organisation. JackJumpers board member Scott Harris is chair of the S.H.E. foundation, with his wife Jo currently battling Stage 4 ovarian cancer.

Jo Harris recently visited JackJumpers practice to speak to the players and coaches,

telling the moving story of her diagnosis and treatment journey, and the impact it has had on her family.

“The JackJumpers Teal Game last year was an emotional and incredible occasion for our family,” Mr Harris said.

“It gave a huge boost in raising awareness around gynaecological cancers.

I hope that prompted many women to be aware of the limited signs and symptoms and go and get checked out if they have any concerns at all.

“Three years ago Jo was given just months to live. She’s still here, still fighting and we want to help anyone going through this to be able to have world-class care right here in Tasmania.”

SOME of Tasmania’s best tennis players were in action on the Eastern Shore last month, taking part in the 28th annual Clarence Open Tennis Tournament.

Held at the Rosny Park Tennis Club from 20-22 January, the tournament attracted more than 60 entries and has been hailed as a huge success.

The two major finals were played in perfect conditions, with a large crowd turning out to see Harry Bourchier defeat his brother Edward 6-1, 6-3 in the Men’s Open Singles and Catherine Krueger shut out Brooke Miller 6-0, 6-0 in the Ladies Open Singles.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley tossed the coin before the men’s final, while Deputy Mayor Allison Ritchie and Councillor Daniel Hulme presented the winner and runner-up trophies to the Bourchier brothers after the match.

Mr Blomeley and Ms Ritchie also unveiled a plaque acknowledging the funding contribution received under the Clarence City Council’s Community Grants Program for a new BBQ facility.

“The Clarence City Council is a proud supporter of the Rosny Park Tennis Club and I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to be part of this special event, particularly the opportunity to enjoy the fantastic tennis on display,” Ms Ritchie said.

“I congratulate co-presidents Kevin Jones and Graeme Byrd, all committee members, tournament director Tony Blom and the entire team of volunteers and supporters for their hard work in making the event such a success.

“I have no doubt that the success of the Clarence Open will see the Club and the sport of tennis go from strength to strength.”

THERE’S a storm brewing on the river, whipped up by the percussive paddling of the Derwent Storms Dragon Boat Club.

An inclusive sport open to men and women of all ages, dragon boat racing has been practiced overseas for centuries and is now one of the fastestgrowing sports in Australia.

Based at the Motor Yacht Club in Lindisfarne, Derwent Storms is the largest dragon boat club in Tasmania, with more than 80 members who can regularly be seen paddling in the Derwent.

One of seven clubs affiliated with the state’s governing body for the sport, Dragon Boat Tasmania, Derwent Storms provides paddlers with the opportunity to compete regularly at a national and even

international level, at events like the Australian Dragon Boat National Championships, the Pan Pacific Masters Games and the Australian Masters Games each year.

Paddlers are currently busy preparing for the next major competition - the Australian Dragon Boat Federation 2023 AusChamps, to be held in Albury-Wodonga in April. Last year the club’s mixed team came home from the event with bronze medals and are hoping to improve on that result this year.

Last November the club’s women's team won bronze at the Pan Pacific Masters Games.

Promising ‘Fitness, Friendship and Fun on the water’, the club is always recruiting new members.

It is currently looking to increase

its male membership numbers, in order to field more open and mixed teams in competitions.

Derwent Storms members promoted the sport at the recent Wooden Boat Festival and also held a special “Come and Try” Sunday session last month, featuring a mix of on and offwater activities and a barbecue at the MYCT. Paddlers enjoy plenty of banter and friendly rivalry at their regular training sessions, which are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Come and Try sessions are held at the Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania from 8.30 - 9.30am every Saturday morning.
