Ballet dances to Best of Business Award FELICITY Ryan Ballet, based on the Eastern Shore, has claimed the Building Communities Award at the Tasmanian Telstra Best of Business Awards.

The studio was praised for its ability to build resilience and inclusivity

by opening its doors to everyone who wants to try something new or rediscover their passion.

“I started the school in 2012 with a very clear vision - I wanted to break down the often intimidating and exclusive archetype

of traditional ballet studios,” owner Felicity Ryan said.

“We are all about inclusion. It doesn’t matter your age, ability, body type, ethnicity or socio-economic background, everyone is welcome.

“We have a wide range of classes including one of the most comprehensive adult ballet programs in Australia.

“One of our relatively new programs caters to students with additional needs and

currently includes people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ADHD and cerebral palsy.”

Ms Ryan said she was eternally grateful to the continued support from the local community.

“We’ve been knocked around a lot through

forced moves, COVID and flooding but we have always managed to get back on our feet,” she said.

“It’s a testament to the support of the Eastern Shore community that we have been able to push

through all the hardship and set some really exciting goals for our future.”

Felicity Ryan Ballet staff will travel to Sydney in early 2024 to represent Tasmania at the national Telstra Best of Business Awards.

CLARENCE City Council has welcomed the news of Tasmania Police establishing a Youth Taskforce designed to tackle shop stealing and anti-social behaviour on the Eastern Shore.

Featuring a mixture of uniform and plain clothes officers, the taskforce will complement existing police patrols with an emphasis on shopping centres, bus malls and other public spaces during the festive season.

“Over the past 12 months Clarence Division has seen an increase in shoplifting and anti-social behaviour, with a significant number of incidents committed by a small group of repeat youth offenders,” Inspector Andrew Keane said.

“Police will not tolerate anti-social and illegal behaviours, nor will we tolerate the propensity of some youth offenders to use violence when

confronted by retail staff – retailers have the right to come to work without worrying about being threatened.

“While the Taskforce will be taking a strict approach to repeat offenders, they will also be working in partnership with partner agencies and key shopping precincts to engage with young offenders and divert them away from the criminal justice system and further offending.”

Brendan Blomeley said the city is not an unsafe place, and the vast majority of residents and visitors will go about their day and not have to deal with or witness antisocial or aggressive behaviour.

“However, there have been increasingly more occurrences of anti-social or aggressive behaviour reported throughout the city, and we welcome Tasmania Police’s commitment to ensuring the people of Clarence

can continue to feel safe,” he said.

“Anti-social behaviour in our shopping centres, bus malls and other places our community gather highlights the need for more action to protect the safety and wellbeing of our residents and visitors to our city.

“Clarence City Council and the Clarence community have taken a stand against the offensive and antisocial behaviour of the few in our community which

violates the peace and wellbeing of many.”

Mayor Blomeley said Council staff will continue to work closely with Tasmania Police to help facilitate a multifaceted approach to achieve real and lasting outcomes and change.

“Our Youth Services and Community Development teams play a vital role in helping at-risk or struggling younger members of our community.” he said.

“We have officers in the

community, in schools, and running outreach programs to engage with young people.

“Through intervention, meaningful programs and relationship building we can help break those cycles and, reassuringly, there are people within our community dedicated to initiating this process.”

Anyone who witnesses anti-social or illegal behaviour is asked to report it to Tasmania Police immediately by phoning 131 444.

GARDENING IN DECEMBER If you are planning to go away over summer, it may be worth considering installing a drip irrigation system in your garden before you go. These types of systems will save you water and deliver the water where it is needed, at the roots. This allows you to give your plants a deep soak rather than just watering the mulch, which is often what happens when hand watering. Irrigation Scheme closer THE South Arm Irrigation Scheme has taken another major step forward with the lodging of a Development Application with Kingborough Council to build the project’s Recycled Water Treatment Plant.

The new $6 million plant, to be built directly behind the existing TasWater treatment plant, will take one-third of the wastewater from the TasWater facility, and rather than discharging it directly into the Derwent River will further treat it to Class A standard, making it suitable for uses such as irrigation and firefighting.

“Additionally, the Scheme will provide irrigation water to Arm End @ Gellibrand Point Golf Course, ensuring it can be developed to its full potential without impinging on local water supplies,” she said.

“All up, in conjunction with the roll-out of the irrigation pipe itself, the projects are expected to create 150 direct and indirect jobs during construction, and at least 100 jobs after construction through increased economic

development due to water certainty.”

In response to Clarence City Council and community concerns about the approved DA route for the South Arm and Opossum Bay North and South pipeline run, MAI have committed to seeking planning approval for a new route which has less impact on the community by bringing the pipe through predominantly agricultural land.

The Scheme’s practical completion is expected to be mid-2024.

The total construction cost of the project is estimated to be $17 million.

Rosny College chalks up 50 years ROSNY College celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, and since its founding in 1973 many students have returned to become teachers and staff at the college.

Ray Riewoldt was one of the first students to go through Rosny College as part of the 1973 cohort.

He now works as a disability support worker in Rosny College’s Springboard program, which helps students with intellectual disabilities.

“We had just come from high school which was very strict, where we had to wear uniforms, but then we came to a fresh, brand-new college

which for us was just sensational,” he said.

“When we came it was only stage one of completion, so there was a common room, offices and a few classrooms.

“Stage two was completed about four or five years later and that added in the gymnasium, auditorium and drama

Skylands plan gets approved

Town parade kicks off the celebrations for 200 years Jeff McClintock rides a penny farthing through Richmond as part of the town parade

RICHMOND Village was a hub of activity from 8-10 December as the Richmond Bicentenary program led off the first of five “Weekends in the Valley” events as part of the town’s 200-year anniversary.

The weekend’s events told the stories of Richmond’s history, from the traditional owners of the region, the Mumirimina people, right through to the current day.

To mark the day the first stone was laid on Australia’s oldest bridge - December 10, 1823 - local school students and community groups took part in a town parade through the centre of the village featuring live music, hand-made costumes and vintage vehicles.

An exhibition was also on display over the weekend at Richmond

Courthouse. ‘Mumirimina: Country and People’ featured 12 artworks depicting the people and stories of lands stolen and lives ruined, further underscoring the striking contrast between Richmond’s prosperity and the overwhelming Mumirimina loss.

The Sounding the Bridge concert was also held at Richmond Town Hall on the Saturday evening, with Coal River Valley composer and pianist Louise Denson debuting her musical work ’Bridge’ and Warlpiri and Palawa woman Nunami Sculthorpe-Green performing ‘mulaka milaythina’ (‘The Hunting Ground’).

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said Richmond Village was highly regarded for its incredibly rich and diverse history.

“So much has taken place here in Richmond, there are many stories to be told, and this has been a truly memorable event to recognise those who have lived here before us,” he said.

“Not everyone knows the river at Richmond was used by the Mumirinmina people for hunting and fishing for thousands of years, but their stories are just as important as the establishment of the village and the Coal Valley which became a rich agricultural area.”

The weekend was the first of five long-weekend events to take place in the Coal River Valley to commemorate the Bicentenary.

CLARENCE City Council has voted to approve the revised Skylands Masterplan, which would see 2500 new homes built on the Droughty Point peninsula.

The council knocked back the masterplan in March because it required the urban growth boundary to be extended. The Friends of Tranmere and Droughty Peninsula community group has also previously opposed the plan, citing concerns around height, density and the number of dwellings.

But the council will now undertake the development of a structure plan for the staged development of the land.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the council would work with the local community and the project proponents

to continue developing the plan to ensure a long-term, sustainable solution.

“Skylands is an exciting development for Tasmania, let alone Clarence,” Mayor Blomeley said.

“This development has the potential to be at the forefront of urban planning, and is a great opportunity for the City of Clarence.

“Developing a greenfield site of this size could allow for the absolute best practice in modern planning, creating connected communities and a better lifestyle.

“The Skylands Masterplan could deliver a style of living unlike anywhere else in Tasmania, and a national-leading example modern urban development.

“The Masterplan is

transformational in its design, this new urbanism with walkable communities breaking the mould of the 1970s-style urban sprawl Tasmania has experienced for decades.

“This plan delivers more than seven times the open space required of a development of this kind and provides provisions for schools, shopping facilities and essential services.

“This is a development we need to keep with the growing demands of our city.”

Council will undertake further community engagement activities to inform the development of the structure plan, and prepare information and fact sheets on the Skylands Masterplan which will be made available to the community.

Cutting cost of Christmas Amanda Blakney’s home-made Christmas decorations

MEMBERS of Clarence Climate Action are engaging in low-cost and low-waste ways of celebrating Christmas and helping the planet in 2023.

Ella van Tienen said her family liked to gift home-made presents such as jams, preserves, baked goods, caramel popcorn, herbs and indoor plants.

“Sometimes we find second-hand items that can be re-gifted, like a nice canister we can fill with something tasty,” she said.

“My sister-in-law makes bowl holders, hats, Christmas bunting and small zip pouches that are just the right size for packing undies and socks when you go away.”

Amy Genford said her family made edible gifts, which made a great Christmas treat.

“We have made lemon curd, oven bake jam and rosemary salt as gifts for teachers,” she said.

“My partner and I also use sites like Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree to find good quality second-hand items for our children.

“My kids like planting things so one year I bought a few clay-based fairy items and some plants and we made a fairy garden together.

“My mum makes origami diamonds out of old Christmas cards with ocean-friendly glitter that gives them a sparkle and sets a perfect party tone for our gathering.”

Amanda Blakney is knitting Christmas tree decorations from leftover yarn to go with dehydrated goodies such as lemon slices, beef jerky, fruit and mint tea; while Mel Thurling uses pillowcases with a pretty fabric tie for wrapping presents.

“I was gifted some unwanted Christmas fabric so I’ve sewn a number of pillowcase-style bags for re-use each year,” Ms Thurling said.

Clarence Climate Action would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and look forward to finding more ordinary people doing extraordinary things for the planet in 2024.

Power prices under the pump MANY Tasmanians are feeling the squeeze from rising costs and energy bills are a key factor, says Labor’s Member for Franklin and Shadow Energy Minister, Dean Winter.

“Christmas should be a time to celebrate and relax, but more families than ever are under financial pressure,” he said.

Mr Winter says electricity costs are one of the main reasons Tasmanians are under financial strain, with power rates up in total by more than 20 per cent over two

years.

Another price hike is on the way, with transmission prices set to go up again in 2024.

Mr Winter says the impact of electricity prices has been severe.

“In the last financial year, 3000 more Tasmanians fell into debt on their electricity bills”, he said.

“For the average household, annual power bills have gone up by almost $500 since June last year.

“These numbers show that many ordinary Tasmanians are in serious

strife.”

As Labor’s energy spokesman, Mr Winter has been promoting the party’s policy of capping electricity price increases at 2.5 per cent per year.

“Labor will ensure Tasmanians pay Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian power,” Mr Winter said.

“Our world-leading hydro system was built by Tasmanians and we should reap the benefits from it.

“We shouldn’t be paying more because of rising coal and gas prices on the mainland.”

“On the Eastern Shore we have caring communities where people look out for each other. I know charities and community organisations welcome any donations and there are many ways to help,” he said.

THE festive spirit was out in full force on Saturday 2 December at Clarence City Council’s everpopular annual Clarence Swinging Christmas event.

As always the free, familyfriendly event was a resounding success with revellers combating the ever-so-slightly brisk air with rugs, picnics and festive drinks.

The Hot Christmas House Band, complete with a full rhythm and horn section, gave everyone’s

favourite Christmas tunes a jazzy makeover with a revolving door of stellar guest vocalists including Maria Lurighi, Katy Raucher and Elly Hoyt; while MC Andrew Colrain kept the crowd entertained throughout.

Santa also made an appearance, along with a heroic and entertaining Elvis.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the event was a wonderful way to kick off the

festive season.

“It was a pleasure to once again welcome so many people to our beautiful Rosny Farm to celebrate this special time of year,” Mayor Blomeley said.

“It was wonderful to see people of all ages and stages of life enjoy a world-class evening of music and fun together in our beautiful city.”

Funding for bike paths THE Tasmanian Government is improving cycling paths in Clarence, making cycling safer on the Eastern Shore.

Alongside the Clarence investment, seven other projects across the state (Devonport, George Town, Kingborough, Launceston, Northern Midlands, Southern Midlands and Waratah-Wynyard) have been funded through the Better Active Transport in Tasmania Grant Program.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Michael Ferguson said the grants would boost Tasmania’s transport

infrastructure and provide people with alternative travel options.

“We recognise the role that improving our active transport infrastructure plays in shaping health, safety and well-being,” he said.

“These eight new projects will see almost $6 million worth of cycling projects this financial year through this program alone.

“Our Greater Hobart Grant Program will help with the implementation of the Greater Hobart Cycling Plan and our statewide grant program will assist councils in delivering key

cycling infrastructure, such as the Northwest Coastal Pathway.

“These grant programs will improve active transport accessibility through enhanced amenity, ease of use and safety, enhancing the travel experience, leading to a greater number of people taking to bikes, scooters, skates, skateboards or running/ walking.

“The more choice we build into our transport infrastructure, the more we can help reduce traffic congestion and vehicle operating costs, improving health and the environment.”

Jump to it A NEW, eagerly anticipated jumps trail at the Clarence Mountain Bike Park, appropriately dubbed ‘Jack Jumper’, was opened recently.

The Jack Jumper trail was the final stage of a $338,000 project within the Clarence Mountain Bike Park and Meehan Range that also included the addition of the popular Monster Flow, Wright Way and Elevator Climb tracks, and a dedicated coaching area.

All the new trails are suitable for beginners through to experienced and advanced users, making more of the park accessible to a wider range of users.

Clarence City Council has contributed more than $170,000 to recent works at the mountain bike park and Meehan Range, and $169,110 in funding has been received through the Australian Government's Building Better Regions grant.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the new Jack Jumper trail was a great addition

to an already popular mountain bike park.

“We heard from the mountain bike community that an easily accessible jump trail, where riders can do lap after lap and build their confidence taking on bigger and bigger jumps, was the missing piece to the popular Clarence Mountain Bike Park,” he said.

“The completion of the Jack Jumper trail cements the park as the best place in southern Tasmania for families to enjoy mountain biking together and for riders to develop their skills.

“The new coaching area and Wright Way has been used by school groups, coaches and individuals to practice techniques before hitting the trails.

“Council has received extremely positive feedback on the new developments from the community. It is our pleasure and privilege to deliver these new trails for use by the people of Clarence and the wider community.”

Clarence City Council wins planning awards CLARENCE City Council has been recognised for its role in two major planning projects at the prestigious 2023 Awards for Planning Excellence Tasmania.

The Council, in partnership with Milangkani projects, was awarded the Planning with Country award for the takara limuna trail at Bedlam Walls, Geilston Bay. The joint project is an immersive truth-telling experience, sharing the story of the area’s Aboriginal culture and history.

Through track design, locally commissioned artworks, oral recordings and written words

in palawa kani, walkers learn of the ancient traditions of the Mumirimina people as they trail along the serene headland.

In partnership with Niche Studio and Entura, Clarence City Council was also recognised for outstanding community engagement in the consultation for Seven Mile Beach Local Area Plan, winning the Stakeholder Engagement award.

The project was commended for its best practice approach to stakeholder engagement and demonstrated adaptability in achieving meaningful engagement.

TASMANIA Police has welcomed 17 new constables from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences into its ranks after 28 weeks of intensive training.

Beginning in May, the new recruits took part in a pilot recruit course trialling Tasmania Police’s first ever mentoring program and a revised curriculum.

“Ranging in age from 19 to 50 years, we have two plumbers, some retail and administration workers, a professional basketballer and a diamond driller in this course, which demonstrates that policing

is a valid career option for anyone with the right attitude and values,” education and training commander Damien George said.

“We are recruiting more than ever before, with six recruit courses planned for next year.

“Policing is one of the most rewarding and important jobs available and I am extremely proud that the 17 people graduating today have chosen a career with Tasmania Police.

“I want to thank the 40 police officers who served as mentors to these new constables and provided

such high-quality support and training to them on the frontline.”

Former childcare worker Emma Hadley was named dux of the course, with former plumber Todd Blake the runner-up.

“I wanted to pursue a new career that would be really rewarding, keep me active, allow me to work in a team and tackle a new challenge every day,” Ms Hadley said.

Mr Blake said the recruit course was “amazing”.

“We learnt so much and I can’t wait to come into work each day not knowing what lies ahead,” he said.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the awards highlighted some of the exceptional work of the people in our city.

“These awards really emphasise how well our community work together to achieve great things,” Mayor Blomeley said.

“The dedication to excellence in this community is exceptional and I am honoured that council has been part of these fantastic initiatives that really benefit our growing community.”

Award winners now progress to the National Awards, to be announced in 2024.

Business excellence awarded THE 2023 Business Excellence and Service Awards were announced in November, showcasing the hard work of Eastern Shore businesses.

Run by Business Eastern Shore, the awards have been presented for more than 20 years and celebrate the contribution and achievements of local businesses.

Twenty-three businesses and four individuals won awards across 13 categories, including Pride of Workmanship, Community Contribution and Environmental Sustainability.

Complete Care Pharmacy in Rosny Park won gold in the Enterprise and Innovation award for its model of integrated care, which co-locates pharmacy services with other health services such as diabetes educators and nurse practitioners.

Pharmacist owners Kristina Fox and Julie Sorrentino acknowledged their staff and customers in a Facebook post.

“The award is a credit to the entire Complete Care Pharmacy team and our amazing eastern shore community who has supported us with our recent name,

location and in-store changes,” Ms Fox and Ms Sorrentino posted.

“We think our new innovative pharmacy model is pretty special and hope you do too.”

Steve’s Swim School won the Community Contribution award, with owner Steve Mourant thanking his staff in his acceptance speech.

“None of this would be possible if it wasn't for our dedicated staff—teaching safety skills for life and our wonderful community entrusting us to provide these life-long skills, safety and fun to our students," Mr Mourant said.

Pooley Wines was awarded the Business Eastern Shore Award and John Pooley said he and his business were honoured to win.

Olivia tells Donna’s story

Tiger sailing into success FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Tiger Somerville is on the fast-track to becoming the master of a tall ship, guided through her journey by the dedicated and supportive crew members of the Lady Nelson.

“I had no idea how much volunteering on the Lady Nelson could change my life and set me on a clear career path,” Ms Somerville said.

Ms Somerville first stepped on board the iconic Tasmanian vessel in January 2023 during a five-day trip down the Tasman Peninsula.

“There is an immense amount of sailing knowledge onboard the Lady Nelson,” she said.

“The crew are super friendly and always willing to pass on their knowledge.

“There so much value in volunteering. It has taught me resilience and provided a really supportive network of experienced shipmates.”

The Lady Nelson has a been a common sight on the River Derwent for more than 40 years thanks to the commitment of volunteers like Ms Somerville who keep the ship afloat.

Despite this, the ship needs more hands of all ages and experiences to come aboard and help continue the legacy of one of Tasmania’s most historically

significant vessels.

“A large amount of Hobart’s and Tasmania’s history can be linked directly to this ship,” Captain Malcolm Riley said.

“We have so much to offer through our volunteer program.

People of all ages come to us with various experience levels and quickly become adept sailors.

“We have varied trips that take us all around our beautiful state.

The skills and knowledge acquired through our program has seen many volunteers progress into top maritime roles.”

A STORY written by a young Tasmanian has been turned into an episode of one of the ABC’s most popular podcasts.

Olivia Lai’s story about Donna Adams, Tasmania’s highest-ranking female police officer, was featured on the ABC’s ‘Fierce Girls’ podcast.

‘Fierce Girls’ is a national writing competition coordinated by the ABC which sees children between eight and 16 writing about an Australian girl or woman they admire.

The five best stories are then chosen to be recorded as part of the podcast.

Twelve-year-old Olivia was one of the winners of this year’s competition for her story about Police Commissioner Adams, who

was one of Tasmania’s first female police officers and had to fight for her place in the male-dominated workforce.

Tasmania now has one of the highest ratios of female police officers in Australia, partially thanks to her hard work.

“When she started she didn’t have a role model to look up to, but because of her hard work and determination she is now an inspiration to all female police officers,” Olivia said.

“The role that Donna has played in driving this change through her own actions is really special.”

Olivia recorded the podcast episode in the Hobart ABC studio, where her story about Donna came to life with the help of music and sound effects.

“What we didn’t realise at the time was that if she won, Olivia would get to narrate the podcast herself,” Olivia’s mother Alison said.

“She got to go into a studio, and she had the support of a local ABC radio producer and an interstate editor who spent a couple of hours with Olivia mentoring her through the process of recording the podcast. It was a priceless experience for Olivia.

“She’s an incredible young woman and although I’m biased, I would certainly say that she’s a future leader in whatever path she eventually chooses to follow.”

Clarence Jazz bigger than ever in 2024 THE 28th annual Clarence Jazz Festival will light up the Eastern Shore in 2024 with a dazzling display of music, art and culinary delights between 28 February and 3 March.

Clarence Mayor Brendon Blomeley said the event would be bigger, better, more sustainable

and more accessible than ever.

“This festival is the highlight of our annual events calendar and is an incredibly popular event in our community, throughout greater Hobart and for interstate visitors,” he said.

“The 2024 event will

feature some of Tasmania’s finest musical talents and premier artists from across the country and around the world.

“For the first time the entire festival will be based at the Rosny Farm and in the Rosny Parkland, with 48 musical acts at both free and ticketed events.”

The musical line-up features both established and emerging artists including festival scholarship recipients Leif Sweeney, Jamie Zieserl and Otto Kneupfer.

Appearing as a headliner and guest with local artists will be award-winning trombonist and 2024

Clarence Jazz Festival Ambassador Shannon Barnett.

Jazz enthusiasts will be excited to see Australian legend Vince Jones who will play two sets with his world-class quintet on the Saturday evening.

Mayor Blomeley said the event boasted a variety

of local food and drink vendors and the inclusion of branded reusable cups which could be returned for a refund or taken home as a souvenir.

Investing in open spaces THE Clarence City Council has received $165,000 from the State Government to go towards the Inclusive Play Upgrade at Simmons Park Lindisfarne, the Rokeby Beach Kayak Launch Point, and the Risdon Vale Oval Shade/Shelter Structure.

Clarence is one of 15 Tasmanian councils set to share in $2.9 million of funding through Round 1 of the State Government’s Open Spaces Grants Program.

“Open spaces are really important to Tasmanian communities - these are places to exercise, gather, socialise and take part in community activities,” Local Government Minister Nic Street said.

“We want to enhance

opportunities for all Tasmanians to gain the health and wellbeing benefits of active living, including participation in sport and all forms of outdoor recreation – especially in their local communities.

“Councils across Tasmania provide much of the essential and wellutilised infrastructure that keeps our communities healthy, active, and connected.”

Round 1 of the grants program attracted strong interest and received a number of quality proposals. All councils, including those unsuccessful in Round 1, can apply for Round 2 in the coming months, with a further $2 million to be distributed.

Acclaimed folk band Dallahan is coming to Clarence

Folk stars coming to Barn Tasman Bridge and South Arm Highway are set for upgrades A TOTAL of $109 million in Federal Government funding has been confirmed for Tasman Bridge and South Arm Highway upgrades.

Sixty-five million dollars has been allocated for the Tasman Bridge upgrades which include expanded pathways for pedestrian and cycling ease, enhanced lighting and heightened safety barriers.

Forty-four million dollars has been provided for South Arm Highway upgrades, including $3 million for much needed safety upgrades to the Acton Road intersection.

Federal member for Franklin Julie Collins said confirmation of these

projects was welcome news for the local community.

“The Tasman Bridge has been waiting for many years to be upgraded. These targeted works will improve traffic flow and road user safety,” she said.

“I have been calling to fix the Acton Road / South Arm Highway intersection since 2019 due to the safety risks it poses to motorists as well as school children and families.

“The Tasmanian Government will now be able to build these vital projects for the local community and I look forward to seeing the progress.”

CLARENCE residents will once again be able to enjoy some of the best acts the Cygnet Folk Festival has to offer across three evenings in January.

Rosny Barn will host Scottish/Irish folk supergroup Dallahan on Monday 15 January; Irish powerhouse Wallis Bird on Tuesday the 16th; and Australian duo Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse on Wednesday the 17th.

Clarence Mayor Brendon Blomeley said the council was delighted to host such high-calibre

acts.

Young Leaders of Tasmania 2023 Future Leaders All Abilities Program graduates

Recognition for young leaders of all abilities GRADUATING students of the Future Leaders All Abilities Program have been recognised in a community celebration at the Southern Support School in Howrah.

Young Leaders of Tasmania (YLOT) chief executive officer Keren Franks said the program, launched in 2017, sought to transform the lives of young Tasmanians, change community perceptions of disability, and increase workforce participation in the disability sector.

“We are very proud of this

program and the positive impact it is having on our future generations,” she said.

“YLOT is about giving Tasmanian youth the best opportunities for personal growth within a safe, structured program.”

YLOT participant and alumni member Mila Skingle was this year’s winner of the Tasmanian Young Achiever Award for Service to the Disability Sector.

“I thank YLOT for all the opportunities I have been exposed to as part of my involvement since Grade 6 in this organisation,” Ms

Skingle said.

“I am now advocating for more inclusive learning and more accessible facilities at my college.

“I have also become a Commissioner for Children and Young People ambassador, advocating for my peers with a disability to influence politicians and decision-makers.

“I am certain that this program can be a vehicle for making the Tasmanian community a more accessible, inclusive and accepting place for people, specifically young people with disability.”

Grace and Ava’s big win AVA Percy from Howrah Primary School (Year 6) and Grace Genford from Clarence High School (Year 7) have been named winners in this year’s National History Challenge.

The National History Challenge is a research-based competition that encourages Australian students to examine their community past, rewarding quality research and effective presentation.

Ava’s video entry examined equality in women’s sport over the past 150 years, using the theme ‘change and continuity’.

She looked at participation, perspective and payment to draw conclusions about what has changed and what needs to change in women’s sport.

Her research process involved interviewing a school staff member who was an elite athlete and examining photographs, data and

other historical information.

Grace was a state and national winner in the Year 7 and Women’s History categories and named the Tasmanian Young Historian of the Year.

Ava and Grace will travel to Canberra with other winners to receive their national medal from the Federal Minister for Education, Jason Clare, at Parliament House.

Big Monkey Theatre nose best THIS year, Big Monkey Theatre is staging its 29th family show at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and has chosen the well-loved children’s story of ‘Pinocchio’ for the 2024 summer season.

‘Pinocchio’ has all the charm, magic and professionalism that we have come to expect from Big Monkey Theatre and the setting within the magnificent Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens adds to the overall high-quality theatrical

experience.

The show tells the story of Pinocchio, a cheeky wooden puppet who just wants to have fun and live life to the full. But most of all he wants to be a real boy.

As Pinocchio sets out to fulfil his dream, he is soon tricked and led astray, then forced to learn life’s lessons the hard way. This is a timeless tale of adventure, mischief, hope and magic.

Director Les Winspear’s

colourful adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s original story complements all the charm of the original, with a cast of madcap characters and catchy songs to carry you through one of the most well-known children’s stories of all time.

Five very talented (and very energetic) performers play a total of 18 characters, with Griffin McLaughlin as Pinocchio and Chris Hamley, Noah Casey, Rosie Cann and Samantha James-Radford

sharing the other 17 roles.

‘Pinocchio’ starts its public season on Tuesday 2 January and runs every day except Monday through to Sunday 21 January. Show times are 11am on weekdays; 2pm and 5pm on Saturdays; and 4pm on Sundays.

The impact of vaping Bringing ‘Jingled’ to life on your dental health Kirstee Moffit, dental assistant, Island Dental IN recent years, vaping has emerged as a popular alternative to traditional cigarettes. While it's often perceived as a less harmful option, it's essential to recognise the various risks associated with vaping, particularly in relation to oral health.

Kirstee Moffit, a qualified dental assistant who has been working in the dental industry for more than 15 years, has observed many harmful effects of smoking both cigarettes and E-cigarettes.

One significant concern is the occurrence of dry mouth, a condition that can be triggered by inhaling vaporised substances. Dry mouth diminishes saliva production, creating an environment conducive to bacterial growth.

Saliva, crucial for neutralising mouth acids, clearing away food particles, and remineralising teeth, plays a pivotal role in oral health. Reduced saliva production elevates the risk of cavities and other oral health issues.

Gum health is another area impacted by vaping, especially in e-cigarettes containing nicotine, a vasoconstrictor that can reduce blood flow.

This reduction in blood flow compromises gum health, increasing an individual’s susceptibility to develop gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

The inhalation of heated aerosols during vaping can irritate oral tissues, leading to inflammation, sore throat, and general discomfort within the oral cavity.

Teeth are not immune to the effects of vaping.

The acidic nature of some e-cigarette liquids contributes to the erosion of tooth enamel over time, resulting in weakened teeth which can be prone to sensitivity and cavities.

Additionally, certain e-cigarette ingredients contribute to teeth staining.

Despite the common misconception that vaping is less harmful than smoking, it is not without consequences. To limit the adverse effects on the mouth, teeth and gums, individuals should adhere to good oral hygiene practices, attend regular dental check-ups, and stay informed about the associated risks.

Education and vigilance are key to maintaining optimal oral health amid the growing popularity of vaping.

RING in the Christmas cheer at Hobart’s historic Playhouse Theatre with the hilarious new Christmas comedy ‘Jingled’, written by Tasmanian writer Stephanie Briarwood and directed

by Mel King and Danni Ashton.

Staging a brand-new play can be a lot of work, but the cast and crew of this locally set comedy have been having a great time putting the show together.

During the show the cast will wear many different costumes, and it is important that they all work together to tell the story of the show.

Recently the cast got together for a “costume parade”, a day when they all try on all their different costumes and accessories and the costume team make a final call on what the cast will be wearing when the curtain comes up for the first time on 15 December!

Costume designer and Clarence local Anita Doig was kept busy throughout the afternoon, putting together the finishing touches and making sure all the costumes work with each other.

‘Jingled’ is a comedic, modern-day retelling of the nativity tale featuring George - a hapless, middle-aged owner of a convenience store. Unhappy with his lot in life, George dreams of running away from the crazy characters who make his life miserable. But one Christmas

Eve everything just seems to go haywire, with a surprise baby on his doorstep throwing his escape plans into disarray!

A cast of 11 talented Tasmanians are bringing this homegrown show to life, including Paul Levett, Ivano Del Pio, Jeff Keogh, Bethany Denholm, Jeremy Pyefinch, Bryony Geeves, Jane HamiltonFoster, Janet Smith, Anne Cordiner, Gabe Atkins and Scott Burns.

Alternative finds at Gosling Gothware DELORAINE’S Gosling Gothware is your onestop shop for all kinds of goth, steampunk and fantasy products, having supplied fans with alternative fashion and accessories since 2015.

“I’ve been interested in the goth lifestyle for some time and was inspired by the lack of steampunk and alternative products available in Tasmania,” Gosling Gothware owner Helen Gosling said.

OnTrack Tasmania celebrates five years of empowering lives ONTRACK Tasmania, a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) service provider in Southern Tasmania, celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.

The organisation was founded by Dr Nick Thomas in July 2018, with a mission to provide supported accommodation,

community access and support coordination services to NDIS Participants.

Nick’s journey to starting OnTrack Tasmania began with a wake-up call in his mid-twenties. He quit his hospitality job and went to university to study criminology in corrections, particularly

in the youth justice sector. After university Nick worked multiple jobs supporting youth with complex needs including youth struggling with alcohol addiction.

Nick’s PhD thesis in qualitative criminology was about engaging with people verbally and understanding their

stories and backgrounds.

This approach has been integrated into OnTrack Tasmania, which Nick started when the NDIS was introduced in Tasmania in 2018.

He received his first Participant from Mission Australia, who gave him the toughest case they had. Nick gradually built a rapport with

the Participant and eventually achieved big goals.

Nick started getting more calls, and moved his family out of their home so he could use it as OnTrack’s first Supported Independent Living (SIL) house.

For almost a year Nick only worked with his wife, seeing clients

during the day and doing administration work at night. During COVID the business grew because of the quality of the service it provided.

In 2021, OnTrack Tasmania rented an office space in Derwent Park to accommodate more administration staff. The organisation recently moved to a bigger office

space in Glenorchy and now has more than 180 NDIS Participants and employs more than 350 administration staff and support workers.

With the rapid growth, Nick is expecting the business to double in size in a year or two, and he will continue to provide exceptional services to NDIS Participants.

Community Bushfire Protection Plans are tailored to individual communities at risk of being impacted by bushfire, to help people in these areas to prepare their own Bushfire Plan.

Tasmania Fire Service Acting Director Community Fire Safety Chris Collins said it was important for people to be prepared for when a bushfire threatens their community, regardless of whether they choose to stay and defend their homes or leave early.

“Understanding the risks of bushfire and taking steps to mitigate these risks is important for everyone, but especially those living in bushfire-prone areas,” he said.

“We want to make sure people are informed, prepared and ready for when a bushfire threatens.”

There are currently

139 Community Bushfire Protection Plans in place across Tasmania, with five new plans recently developed for the areas of Smithton, Ridgley, Irishtown and Edith Creek, Geilston Bay – Mornington and Primrose Sands.

Additionally, nine existing plans have been updated in the areas of Rosebery, Lady Barron, Derwent Bridge, Nubeena, Margate, Sandfly, Middleton, Molesworth and Cradle Valley.

Short online course could have real long-term benefits A FREE online short course that explores the unpredictability of bushfires and how we live with them is teaching the community how to adapt in a changing climate.

Dr Penelope Jones from the University of Tasmania developed the short course and said it was a great opportunity for anyone hoping to learn about the fascinating science behind wildfire and how to live safely and sustainably alongside it.

“The short course is designed to help people in the community understand fire, how it has shaped our environments and human cultures, and how and why we

might find new ways to live well with it,” she said.

The short course, which takes 18 hours over four weeks and can be started at any time, is a taster of a longer, 12-week ‘Living with Fire’ unit that forms part of the Diploma of Sustainable Living.

Students can choose to enrol in the full Diploma unit upon completion of the short course.

In the Diploma, students develop individual bushfire management strategies and become more empowered to participate in conversations about how we plan for and respond to fire in our local communities.

and Fire Science at the University of Tasmania’s Fire Centre, Professor David Bowman, is an international authority on wildfires and drew on more than 45 years of experience to help design the course.

“Preparing for a bushfire is not just for people living in the bush, it’s for everyone,” he said.

“There is a significant risk that fire can reach down into our urban areas and the best thing you can do is to be informed and have a plan.”

2. Develop situational awareness in the fire season: understand where you are, and if you are in a flammable environment, know how to leave to a safer place, be alerted to changes in the environment,

3. Have a plan to escape from dangerous places and identify nearby safe places, think about the way you will leave and consider alternatives to driving.

4. Be networked and keep up to date with warnings. Listen to your ABC local radio station for updates during an emergency.

5. Be careful with fire

Battling the burn of Hiker’s Feet Jo Cordell-Cooper EMBARKING on an extended multi-day hike is a thrilling adventure that pushes both your physical and mental boundaries.

As someone who recently completed a 17-day trek along the challenging Larapinta Trail, I learned first-hand the importance of not only preparing your muscles but also fortifying your tendons and ligaments to prevent overuse injuries like tendonitis and, in my case, plantar fasciitis.

The key to a successful and pain-free hiking experience lies in a holistic approach to conditioning. While focusing on building robust muscles is essential, neglecting the strength of your tendons and ligaments can lead to unforeseen issues.

Plantar fasciitis, a common affliction among hikers, can be averted with a few simple precautions.

One of the cardinal rules is to listen to your body. During my hike, I experienced a subtle but

persistent burning sensation in my feet and ankles which was much worse at night and first thing on waking. Once I got moving the discomfort became more subtle.

Ignoring these signals proved to be a critical mistake. This change in my feet health should have prompted me to take a rest day, allowing my body to recover and preventing the onset of plantar fasciitis.

Rest is not a sign of weakness; it’s a strategic move to avoid overuse injuries. Tendonitis and plantar fasciitis often arise from pushing your body beyond its limits without adequate recovery.

A day off during an extended hike can make a world of difference. I wish I had heeded this advice around the midpoint of the Larapinta Trail. Soaking my feet in a cold waterhole and giving my body the rest it needed might have spared me the discomfort that followed.

If, like me, you suspect plantar fasciitis, seeking professional advice is crucial. A podiatrist

can provide a firm diagnosis and guide you on a tailored recovery plan. In my case, a bruised bone was identified, and my podiatrist prescribed specific exercises to strengthen the arch of my foot and toes. From piano-like toe exercises, calf stretches and to wearing temporary orthotics, I am actively working towards regaining the collective strength of my feet.

Preventing plantar fasciitis isn’t just about the journey; it’s about the steps you take before, during and after. Prepare your entire lower extremity for the demands of an extended hike, listen to your body’s signals, and rest adequately. Your feet will thank you, and you’ll be able to relish the joy of hiking without the burden of painful overuse injuries.

AS the year draws to a close, it’s a time for reflection and expressing gratitude. At Ten Lives, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all our supporters who have played a crucial role in making 2023 another year of success looking after the cats who come to us in need.

First and foremost, we are genuinely thankful for the unwavering support received from our community. In these challenging times, your continued support has enabled us to carry out the incredible work we do for the cats and kittens of southern Tasmania.

Without your generosity, our mission to provide essential veterinary care, surgery, rehabilitation and foster care for these feline friends on their journey to adoption would not be possible.

The journey begins the moment these cats enter our Centre, and your

support has been the driving force behind their successful transition to forever homes.

We owe a debt of gratitude to our dedicated team, including staff, volunteers and foster carers, who work tirelessly to ensure the well-being of these animals.

The Tradies for Tabbies initiative stands as a testament to the positive impact of your support. The new vet consultation room for foster carers is a valuable addition, enhancing the care and support we can provide to our furry companions.

Our Op Shops significantly contribute to our income and are integral to our plan for financial sustainability.

They have earned the prestigious title of 7HOFM’s Best of the Best Op Shop for the second consecutive year, a recognition of the hard work put in by our dedicated volunteers who contribute to making our Op Shops exceptional.

Another highlight of the year was the annual Ten Lives Ten Day Catwalk Challenge, aiming to raise $10,000 in just ten days to cover emergency vet expenses for foster cats, especially as we approached the upcoming kitten season.

Although we fell just short of our goal, raising $8,270 through the Challenge, the support and enthusiasm shown during this initiative were truly heartwarming.

“It’s crucial to highlight that as a notfor-profit organisation,

we do not receive government funding for our operations. Your support, especially during the high-demand kitten season, is more critical than ever,” Ten Lives CEO Noel Hunt said.

“Thank you for being an integral part of our journey and for helping us make a difference in the lives of cats and kittens.”

Consider the risks that you face in everyday life.

Some of them cannot be removed entirely, but we can mitigate their financial impact through personal life insurance products.

If you do not have adequate insurance, an unforeseen death or illness could have severe consequences for you and/or your family. Here we discuss the four main types of life insurance products to help you financially navigate a crisis.

Life Life insurance is designed to provide a lump sum payment to your family or nominated beneficiary in the event of your death, or in other cases, it can provide an early payment if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness. The payment can allow your family to stay in their home, help provide for your children's education, and give your spouse financial security and the ability to maintain their lifestyle.

Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) TPD is designed to provide you with a lump sum payment if you are no longer able to work because of an injury or illness. The payment should provide you with financial security to support your living expenses if the level of cover if correct. There

are two types of TPD insurance: • Own occupation Own occupation will provide a lump sum if you can no longer work in your own field of work in which you are trained and specialise.

• Any occupation Any occupation, which generally costs less, will only provide you with a lump sum if you can no longer work in any occupation that might be suitable based on your training, education and previous employment.

Critical Illness (CI) CI is designed to provide you with a lump sum payment if you become critically ill and require extensive medical treatment - for example cancer, a heart condition, stroke or major head injury. The lump sum will allow you to access high quality medical treatment and cover rehabilitation costs, so you can focus on recovering rather than worrying about your finances.

Income Protection (IP) IP is designed to supplement your income if you are unable to work because of an illness or injury. IP policies generally cover up to 70 per cent of your gross wage, which helps you financially maintain your existing lifestyle and provide for your family while you recover. Two main features of IP are the waiting period and the benefit period.

• Waiting period This is the amount of time you wait before payments start.

Waiting periods are

generally between 14 days and two years.

The longer the waiting period, the cheaper the policy.

• Benefit period This is how long the payments last. Benefit periods range from one year up to 10 years, or up to a specific age, such as age 65. The longer the benefit period, the more expensive the policy.

However, your income will be protected for longer.

Finding the right insurance cover for your situation and budget can be difficult and confusing. If you already have personal insurances in place, it is important that you hold the correct types and levels of cover.

With Year 12 now finished, many young Tasmanians will be working out what they’ll be doing next year. Will they continue to study or start to work? Will they stay at home or move out?

Whatever decision they make, there are some things they can do over the summer to get themselves ready for 2024.

I really encourage parents and Year 12 students to visit our website, servicesaustralia. gov.au, and search for ‘leaving school’. There’s a lot of helpful information for anyone leaving school, whatever you choose to do next. This webpage will guide you through the following: • Creating a myGov account • Setting up Medicare and getting a Medicare card • Getting a tax file number, and

• What payments might be available Youth Allowance is the main payment for school leavers who want to continue their studies or are looking for work. If you plan to study, you must be studying full time or doing an apprenticeship to qualify.

Most school leavers are considered dependent. That means your parents’ income has an impact on whether you’re eligible or not.

If you’re going to study, you can claim up to 13 weeks before your course starts. For most, that means they can claim in December. Claiming early gives you the best chance of having the payment ready when your course starts, so do it as early as you can.

There’s additional support for students moving from or to a rural or remote area to study at university. The Relocation Scholarship is an additional payment for students getting

Youth Allowance. It gives an initial lump sum of $5,080 and then other, smaller payments every year after. The good news is, we automatically check if you’re eligible for it when you apply for Youth Allowance.

If you’re not eligible for Youth Allowance, you can still apply for a Tertiary Access Payment if you’re moving from a rural or remote area to study. It’s a oneoff payment of $3,000 or $5,000 depending on where your family home is located. You must be starting tertiary studies in the year after finishing Year 12.

If you’re from a rural or remote area and take a working gap year in 2024, you may be considered independent if you claim a payment in 2025. It depends on how long you worked and how much you earned. Check out our website for more details.

Davis back to defend title REIGNING champion Lauren Davis (USA) will return to defend her title at the 29th edition of the Hobart International, to be held at the Domain Tennis Centre from 6-13 January.

Davis became the fourth qualifier in the past 11 years to lift the Angie Cunningham trophy with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over rising Italian star Elisabetta Cocciaretto at this year’s Hobart International and is looking forward to coming back to defend her title.

“I have so much fun, I love Hobart. I come here every year and it feels like I’m coming back home in some ways,” Davis said.

“The crowds are so amazing and appreciative in Hobart, so their support makes it a no-brainer decision to come back.

“I’m going to try my best to defend my title next year and prepare well for the Australian Open.”

Tournament director Darren Sturgess said having Davis return to the Hobart International to defend her title will make for a thrilling event.

“Her remarkable journey through this year’s tournament progressing through qualifying to saving a set point to claim the title of champion - is a testament to her

tenacity on the court,” he said.

Fans will be able to see 32 of the world’s best players and 16 of the best doubles teams over 10 sessions (day and night) during the main draw in the second week of January.

HOBART Out Tennis Club life member Brendon OliverEwen has been named Tennis Tasmania’s 2023 Volunteer of the Year, following in the footsteps of fellow club member Hendry Lukman who won the award in 2022.

Hobart Out Tennis organises competitive and social events across Tasmania with a focus on inclusivity, with activities that welcome members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Over the past six years I’ve seen tennis environments in Tasmania transform and become far more welcoming and accepting of all community

members,” Mr Oliver-Ewen said.

“At the awards night I was approached by several club presidents asking me how they can make their clubs more inclusive and it’s wonderful to see that there is a genuine desire from mainstream clubs to do better.”

Next month’s all-inclusive 2024 Hobart Out Tennis Tournament will feature 150 athletes from around the globe competing at the Domain Tennis Centre from 12 to 14 January.

The event will run alongside the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) Hobart International competition.

Mr Oliver-Ewen said the tournament was an accredited part of the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA) world tour calendar.

“The partnership we have with Tennis Tasmania is quite unique no other professional tournament in the world runs concurrently with a GLTA event,” he said.

“Our January tournament and other events are open to everyone, including LGBTQIA+ community members and allies.

“Through sport, we have grown a really accepting community.

There are so few events like this in Tasmania which makes it so much more important.”

Clarence cubs dominate state under 19 squad THE Under 19 Tasmanian Female Cricket squad, which includes five players from the Eastern Shore, has travelled to Brisbane to take on some of the best emerging players in the country.

In a gruelling schedule that involves six games across four days, the Tasmanian side will face off against elite-level under 19 talent from around Australia and the under 23 side from Papua New Guinea.

The 14-woman squad includes Clarence players Taylor Brooks, Sophia Di Veneto, Talia Heyward, Jessica Ransley and Kate Sheriff.

Head coach Natalie Schilov said the national championships were always a good test for the female Tasmanian pathways squad.

“We’ll be aiming to compete and implement a number of things we have been working hard on both as individuals

and as a group,” she said.

“We are excited to get out there and play more cricket and see what our talented youngsters can achieve at this level.”

North Hobart bowler Shelby Leonard is one player hoping to impress during the tournament and gain some recognition at the national level.

“This championship is a valuable opportunity for every player in the squad to put their case forward and show that they are capable of performing at the highest level,” Ms Leonard said.

“As a left-arm bowler I feel like I can make a unique contribution to any team and I’m excited to show that at a national event.

“The success of the Tasmanian team in the WNCL has been a great inspiration for us. To train alongside them and see their dedication and work ethic has been amazing.”

Horsing around at the Summer Racing Festival THE 2023/24 Tasmanian Summer Racing Festival will feature three codes of racing across 27 race days in all corners of the state.

This season will include high-profile events including the 150th running of the Ladbrokes Hobart Cup, the Ladbrokes Devonport and Launceston Cups

for thoroughbreds, and the Ladbrokes Hobart Thousand for greyhounds.

Tasracing CEO Andrew Jenkins said while national exposure for summer racing was extremely important to the Tasmanian racing industry, it was also important to generate

local support through crowds at race days that showcase the racecourse experience.

“This season features race days in our cities and country race days on King Island, at Longford, St Marys, Scottsdale, Burnie and Carrick,” he said.

“Showcasing Tasmania as a fun racing

destination for groups and focussing on the entertainment aspect of our events is also a critical part of what we are aiming to achieve.

“We are positioning ourselves as a place for everyone with excellent racing and hospitality options.”

This year’s festival’s

ambassadors are AFL premiership player Campbell Brown and Grace Hayden, who will work to promote the fashion and glamour side of the race days.

“The highly successful Ladbrokes Carpet Charge (won last year

for this festival to Hobart and Launceston Cup days to become the Ladbrokes Community Sports Series,” Mr Jenkins said.

“Local sporting clubs will be invited to enter a draw to be selected to have a horse running in their name on each cup race day.

“The total prize

pool for each race will be $25,000, with the winning club receiving $10,000. It gives sporting and community clubs, that often survive on volunteers, the opportunity to win $10,000 if their horse wins - which can make a real difference for small clubs.”

McKinley are committed to creating a more prosperous environment to help player retention and re-invigorate the local community.

“In the past, there has been a bit of a disconnect between us and the senior sides - we hope by working together we can create an improved program where players will want to stay,” Ms Budd said.

“For the past three years we have been unable to fill any under 16.5 sides, which has left a huge hole for our senior club as many players move to elsewhere after their under 15 season.

“We aim to unite with our senior sides and become a proper destination club.

“Our club has a strong family feel, a supportive

community and a beautiful environment where aspiring talent can achieve their goals.”

Ms McKinley said the club had developed constructive partnerships with local community members and businesses.

Ellis takes the reins HOBART Hurricanes stalwart Nathan Ellis will lead the purple campaign in BBL|13 as the new team captain in his sixth season with the franchise.

“It is a huge honour.

Captaining was not something I set out to achieve or a goal that I set for myself, but to lead the franchise is nothing short of an honour,” Ellis said.

“The Hurricanes are a franchise that I hold very dear to my heart and have done a lot for me. So to have the opportunity to lead and hopefully bring

some silverware home to Tasmania is really exciting.”

The fast bowler recently signed a contract extension, keeping him at the Hurricanes until the 2026 season.

Head coach Jeff Vaughan said Ellis, the side’s second all-time leading wicket taker, showed great potential as vice-captain in 2023, filling in for previous leader Matthew Wade in a number of games last season.

“We are extremely pleased to announce

Nathan as our captain for the BBL|13 season,” Vaughan said.

“He has already led the team in patches last year and we have the utmost confidence in Nathan as a cricketer and a leader.

“He embodies everything the Hurricanes stand for - a great work ethic, resilience and a fantastic attitude towards the game and his teammates.”

The Hurricanes season started in Launceston on 11 December before their first game at Blundstone Arena on 23 December.
