CLARENCE YOUTH DIG IN TO PROTECT NATIVE HABITATS CLARENCE City Council and The Cottage School have dug in to improve the understory habitat for a protected bandicoot as part of National Tree Day – Australia’s largest community tree-planting and nature care event.

Held across the nation on Sunday 1 August, with the schools-specific event having taken place on 30 July, council lent its support to the community-minded students at the Cottage School in its mission to improve the habitat at Wentworth Park in Howrah, which is home to the Southern Brown Bandicoot.

Found in many reserves across Clarence, the Southern Brown Bandicoot is a protected native species, and while common in Tasmania, is endangered on mainland Australia.

CLARENCE YOUTH DIG IN TO PROTECT NATIVE HABITATS FROM FRONT PAGE

It requires a dense ground cover of native tussock grasses, sedges and shrubs for shelter and nesting.

Clarence City Council Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman said council was proud to continue supporting schools and community groups in protecting the city’s important flora and fauna habitats.

“Clarence has significant areas of coastal and bushland reserves and it’s so great to see the community dig in to help protect and restore our native habitats, enhancing the work council is already doing in these spaces,” he said.

“Clarence is home to the protected Southern

Brown Bandicoot and the efforts at Wentworth Park will help revitalise the native habitat and ensure that these wonderful animals can survive and thrive long into the future.

“I highly commend the students at Cottage School for taking the time to learn about the importance of endemic and threatened native species and do their part in protecting the environment.”

Clarence City Council has supported several school and community groups in its National Tree Day efforts this year through funding trees, planting supplies, and providing in-person support on the day.

The planting at Wentworth Park builds on the work already undertaken

through Howrah Primary School’s Bandicoot Bunker program, which is delivered in partnership with Clarence City Council and the Acton Park Landcare Group, and aims to build natural habitats while educating children about being good custodians of nature and wildlife.

The Cottage School kinder teacher Stephanie Becker said the students cared greatly about the environment and local native animals.

She said her class had begun learning about nests and the impact human activity had on the habitats of native Tasmanian animals.

Derwent Ferry trial makes waves for Eastern Shore travellers

Derwent service offers commuters an alternative to car travel to help ease congestion and boost active transport such as cycling and walking,” Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson said.

“With excellent cycling infrastructure on either side of the journey, the ferry will be ideal for cyclists who aren’t confident crossing the Tasman Bridge, but still want to cross the river.

“The fast and convenient trip will be a relaxing and scenic experience for commuters, with Derwent Ferries developing a people focused service.”

Mr Ferguson said the initiative was a key component in the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s $175.5 million Greater Hobart Transport Vision.

“The trial service is not expected to be a silver bullet solution to ease traffic congestion in Hobart, but an important part of the overall transport mix required for the growing and thriving community,” he said.

“In addition to reducing congestion, the ferry will bring more visitors to Bellerive who want to explore the area with excellent walking and cycling infrastructure

accessible from the wharf.

“The people of Hobart have said for many years they would use this ferry.

“Now that the trial service is in place, we can get a true measure of public support.”

Derwent Ferries managing director John Roche said starting and finishing the working day on the ferry would be a relaxing and convenient way to get across the River Derwent.

“We’re really excited to be offering this service on the picturesque and iconic river,” he said.

“The opportunity to travel on our beautiful river, avoid congestion and to be able to do it for free, is expected to be popular."

The sea trials coincide with infrastructure works at the Bellerive wharf and the construction of new ramps allowing for all-abilities access.

“We’re excited to

offer members of our community the option of an iconic commute across the beautiful River Derwent,” Clarence City Council Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman said.

“With our existing network of tracks and trails, this service will provide a vital missing link for our commuter network, encouraging active transport and getting cars off the road.

“It is important to remember this is a trial and will be crucial in identifying the demand for the service so that we can plan accordingly and deliver better solutions for the long term.”

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the ferry offered a fast, congestion-free option to people living on the Eastern Shore to cross the river.

“Many people who

work in the city live across the river and I hope they embrace this service,” she said.

“If it’s popular, we can advocate for more ferry services on the river right around Greater Hobart.

“It makes so much sense to use our beautiful river to improve public transport services in Hobart.

“A more accessible, efficient and comfortable public transport system is

the best tool for tackling congestion and managing growth in Hobart.”

IN a new era of transport across Hobart’s iconic River Derwent, the first Bellerive to Hobart Derwent Ferry services have carried passengers to their destination.

The Derwent River Ferry service, linking Hobart with Bellerive, is part of a plan to bust traffic congestion in southern Tasmania by offering commuters an alternative to car travel.

Morning services will commence at 6:20am from Bellerive Pier with five runs to the city, the last arriving at 9:15am, with outward runs from Brooke Street Pier commencing from 7:20am.

Each crossing will take about 15 minutes and combined will cater for up to 535 passengers inward and 321 outwards each morning.

“Importantly, the 6:20am service into the city has been put in place to cater for our vital shift workers like nurses and emergency responders, as well as other early starters,” Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson said.

Afternoon services will start departures from Brooke Street Pier at 3:50pm, with four runs to Bellerive, the last arriving at 6:05pm, with room for up to 428 passengers.

Afternoon inward bound trips to the city commence at 4:10pm with space for up to 321 passengers.

“The 3:50pm service will again be particularly appealing to our shift workers and early starters that end their workdays earlier, as well as students heading home after school, university or TAFE,” Mr Ferguson said.

The trial service is free to commuters who have a Metro Tasmania Greencard or are travelling with a bicycle or an e-scooter.

“Operated by longstanding and respected local ferry provider Roche Brothers, who also run the Navigators Mona ferries, the

NORTH Hobart is getting ready to get its swing on, with the Hobart Jazz Club set to deliver its 17th annual Hot August Jazz Festival on Sunday 29 August.

More than 250 musicians in 72 bands will perform across multiple venues on the North Hobart strip.

Venues include the Uniting Church (North Hobart), Queens Head, Raincheck Lounge, Republic Bar, Willings Bros. Wine Merchants, The Crescent Hotel, Marigold Café, Capital Restaurant, Angelika Bar, Providence Café and Room for a Pony Solo acts, duos, groups, and big bands will play throughout the day from

noon across the venues, culminating at the Republic Bar at midnight.

The festival promises to deliver something for all jazz tastes, with jazz genres from traditional and mainstream through to funk and modern.

“It’s a musician’s day out and they love it, they meet up with their mates, have a drink and listen to some good music,” Hot August Jazz organiser Christine Bailey said.

“We have found over the years that we get a mob of people that come along.”

The event will be a showcase of Tasmania’s jazz talent and is a great platform for many musicians.

It gives young musi-

cians the opportunity to perform professionally in front of an audience while also having the chance to see the experienced players perform.

“It’s great the festival is back on this year, it’s about getting people out to fun free events and building a bit of a following for some bands that people haven’t heard before,” musician Gus Leighton said.

“We’ve got a range of musicians from younger guys to the older cats who have been playing around Hobart for ages, so it’s giving them a chance to show what they’ve been working on and what they’ve been doing, and also giving them a chance to be seen by people and gain that following – it’s a

Ferry history is back on board

CLARENCE City Council has unveiled the second of several ferry markers that commemorate Clarence’s river transport network and major ferry wharves of times gone by.

The South Arm marker explores South Arm’s connection to Hobart by the River Derwent.

It highlights some forgotten aspects of South Arm history, such as the many holidaymakers who used the ferries to come over to South Arm for a picnic outing in beautiful bush surroundings.

Clarence City Council Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman said with sea trials having commenced for the new Derwent Ferry, it was a fitting time to look back at the river’s rich history of seafaring.

“Greater Hobart has a long history of utilising our waterways as a means of transportation, and it is marvellous to see our unique history brought to life in this way,” he said.

He said knowledge and understanding of historical events enabled people to develop a much greater awareness of current events and initiatives.

“It is vital that we understand the past in order to build our future

and this cultural history project has highlighted an important piece of our shared history.”

The ferry marker project is part of Clarence City Council’s commitment to preserve and promote the history of Clarence through its

Cultural History Advisory Committee.

The ferry marker can be seen on the waterfront on Jetty Road in South Arm, with the first ferry marker located on the Esplanade in Lindisfarne.

YOUR COVID SAFETY KIT

Tasmanians TASMANIANS have been keeping on top of COVID, but we must remain aware of the ongoing threat.

Other Australian states and territories have had to respond to recent new COVID-19 cases in their communities, showing how quickly things can change.

These responses include requiring the community to take extra precautions,

such as wearing face masks, to protect themselves and others around them..

By having a few items ready you can be prepared if further community restrictions are introduced in Tasmania to respond to cases in the community.

The items in the kit can play an important role in daily life right now to help keep you safe.

This means that the best time to prepare and start using your COVID safety kit is now.

In addition to our COV-

ID safe behaviours, having a COVID safety kit ready will help us continue to keep on top of COVID in Tasmania.

There are four items each of us should have in a COVID safety kit.

Face masks Keep some masks at home and one with you – ,e.g. you may like to keep one in your bag or with you at work.

Face masks are mandatory (for all people aged 12 or older) at Tasmanian airports and on board all aircraft (including scenic flights).

They are also required at the Spirit of Tasmania terminal and on board the boat.

Masks may become mandatory in other public settings as part of community restrictions.

If you haven’t worn a mask before, get familiar with how to wear a mask now so that you are prepared.

A face mask should be worn over both your nose and mouth.

Tissues Keep tissues at home and in other places you spend a lot time.

Small tissue packets are great for carrying in your pocket or bag.

Cover all coughs and sneezes and with a clean tissue.

Dispose of used tissues in the bin straight after you use them, and wash your hands well with soap and warm running water (or use hand sanitiser if you don’t have soap and water).

Hand sanitiser Keep hand sanitiser with you when possible, as well asand some at home.

Use it regularly on your hands when you don’t

have access to soap and warm water to wash them.

A small bottle of hand sanitiser in your pocket or backpack is handy for many situations such as using public transport or when picking up a snack on your lunchbreak.

It’s also useful to have some at home should anyone in your household ever need to quarantine.

Check in TAS app Check in by using the Check in TAS app when you visit most businesses, venues and events.

Checking in is impor-

tant so that contact tracers can quickly identify and contact impacted locations and people if there is a case in the community.

Checking in is compulsory so be prepared and download the app to your phone.

When you arrive at a location with a QR code displayed, simply scan the code to record your visit.

If you don’t have a smartphone, another person in your group can check you in via their app, or staff at the premises can check you in.

Works to begin on Lincoln Street pedestrian crossing CLARENCE City Council is improving the safety and accessibility of Lincoln Street in Lindisfarne’s central business district, with works beginning in September on the construction of a ‘wombat’ crossing.

The pedestrian upgrade – which will see a partial lane closure throughout the duration of the works – is in response to community concerns

about the safety of pedestrians attempting to cross the road at the Lincoln and Franklin Street intersection.

Following an independent feasibility investigation report, council determined that a ‘wombat’ crossing was most suitable for the area and would give pedestrians priority at the crossing, assist in controlling vehicle speed and improve the

overall streetscape and walkability of the area.

Works will take place for approximately 10 weeks from September to November and will include the construction of the crossing, footpath upgrade, removal of the existing pedestrian island, minor service relocations and upgraded street lighting.

One existing parking space will also be removed so that cars

cannot park too close to the crossing – this is for safety reasons and to comply with Australian standards on sight distance requirements.

Throughout the construction period, there will be a partial road closure and a detour will be in place.

Landcare and coastcare groups in the City of Clarence can now apply for Clarence City Council’s 2021-22 Landcare and Coastcare Grant Program.

GRANTS PROGRAM HELPS LOCAL GROUPS GROW LOCAL groups committed to improving Clarence’s open spaces will have the opportunity to strengthen their work in the community with applications now open for Clarence City Council’s 2021-22 Land and Coastcare Grant Program.

Held annually, the grant program is open to land care, coast care, scout, guide, service clubs and school groups in the City of Clarence and provides financial assistance of up to $5,000 to projects that

demonstrate community benefit.

Clarence City Council Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman said council was happy to offer the Land and Coastcare Grant Program for 202122.

“Land and coast care groups do such amazing work in our community, working together to maintain and improve our natural environment and open spaces,” he said.

“We are so pleased to be able to provide financial support through

our grants program and we encourage any groups with worthwhile on-theground projects to submit an application now.”

Grants are now available to support environmental projects predominantly on council-managed land and with broader community benefit.

Applications close 5pm on Monday 20 September.

FAMILY PAYMENT BALANCING Hank Jongen General Manager Services Australia IT’S that time of year again.

As the door opens to a new financial year, tax time brings with it a flurry of activity.

Many families who get Family Tax Benefit and Child Care Subsidy know Services Australia will balance family payments during this period.

However, if this is your first year getting a family payment, this may be the first time you’re hearing about ‘balancing’.

There are currently more than two million Australian families receiving Family Tax Benefit, Child Care Subsidy or both, and these payments are balanced each financial year.

This is where we assess your estimated family income against your actual income to confirm what you were entitled to.

This is to check we paid you the right amount for

your circumstances.

When we balance your payments, if we find you were paid less than you were entitled to, we’ll pay you a ‘top-up’.

If you were paid more than you were eligible for, you’ll need to pay it back.

If you’re in this situation, don’t worry – we’re here to help.

You won’t have to pay it all back at once.

Most people repay the money over time and we will work with you to find a repayment plan that suits your circumstances.

For most families, we confirm your income when you lodge a tax return.

If you don’t need to lodge a tax return, you’ll need to let us know (even if you’ve already told the Australian Tax Office).

You can do this through your Centrelink online account through myGov or Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

If you can’t use our online options, you can call the families line on

136 150.

It’s open Monday to Friday between 8am and 8pm.

For families receiving Family Tax Benefit, balancing commenced in mid-July after people received their final payment for the financial year.

We’ll then start balancing Child Care Subsidy payments from mid-August.

This is because we have to wait until your childcare provider sends us your family’s final attendance record for the year.

You don’t need to call us to find out where your balancing is up to.

Once balancing has started, you can track this through the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

Once we’ve finished balancing your payments, we’ll write to you with the outcome.

WITH approximately $3.1 trillion held in superannuation assets it is easy to understand that for most Australians, their super is generally their second biggest asset behind their family home.

Therefore, it is important your super goes where you want it to when you pass away.

Unlike the family home, you can nominate beneficiaries to receive your super (including any life insurance) when you pass away.

Consequently, determining who gets your super upon death isn’t as straightforward as just having a Will in place.

While having a Will is very important, your Will addresses the disbursement of assets such as your home, cash, cars, investment properties and other estate assets.

If your nomination isn’t valid or you don’t make one, a risk arises because your super provider (the trustee) has discretion to decide who receives your super, regardless of what

you have listed in your Will.

Having a valid nomination on your super can provide peace of mind and help avoid family conflicts.

BENEFICIARY NOMINATIONS In most cases, you can make a death benefit nomination on your super or pension account.

Your beneficiary nomination provides your super provider with instructions as to who you would like to receive your super balance upon death.

However, there are restrictions as to who you can nominate. Under the ‘Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993’ (SIS), you can nominate your super be paid to one or more of your dependants or your legal personal representative (your estate).

A dependant can be a spouse, a child (of any age), or an interdependent.

It is also important to note that there are different tax consequences for different dependants and also how they can receive the benefit – i.e. lump sum or pension.

The validity of your nomination will only be assessed by your super fund when the death benefit is payable.

Therefore, it makes it very important that your nomination has been completed correctly and is valid at the time of making it.

There are two main types of beneficiary nominations.

They are ‘binding’ nominations and ‘non-binding’ nominations.

Not all super funds offer both binding and non-binding nominations.

There are also reversionary nominations that can be made on account-based pension only.

BINDING NOMINATIONS If you make a binding nomination, your super fund (the trustee) is legally required to pay your super benefit to your listed beneficiary given they are an eligible beneficiary.

A binding nomination can provide a greater level of certainty and peace of mind that your super will end up where you want it.

Binding nominations can be either lapsing or

non-lapsing.

Lapsing nominations are generally only valid for three years and then need to be re-submitted.

This can pose some risk if a nomination lapses and you are not aware or you forget to resubmit a new nomination.

On the other hand, non-lapsing nominations are in place for life or until cancelled or updated.

NON-BINDING NOMINATIONS If you make a non-binding nomination the trustee is not legally required to follow your instructions.

The trustee will use your non-binding nomination as a guide only.

This means that the trustee has full discretion to pay your death benefit to somebody else, such as your estate or another eligible beneficiary.

As you can imagine, this might leave you feeling uneasy.

REVERSIONARY NOMINATIONS A reversionary nomination can only be made on an account-based pension income stream.

If you make a reversionary nomination (generally in favour of your spouse), your spouse or eligible beneficiary will continue receiving the regular income being paid from the account based pension upon death.

available for your super when you pass away and what you can do to ensure it’s paid according to your wishes.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR PRESTIGIOUS CLARENCE PRIZE DESIGN AWARD THE winner of Tasmania’s most prestigious design award was announced last month, with artist Ashley Eriksmoen taking home the $20,000 acquisitive prize, one of the highest cash prizes for furniture design in Australia.

Celebrating innovative furniture design for more than a decade, the Clarence Prize for Excellence in Furniture Design, run by Clarence City Council, showcases the ingenuity of good design through the combination of function and beauty.

Clarence City Council Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman said the Clarence Prize was an example of the council’s commitment to supporting the arts.

“Our long-term vision for Clarence is as a vibrant, prosperous, and sustainable city,” he said.

“The Clarence Prize forms part of this

commitment, and really puts us on the map as a creative city.”

Ms Eriksmoen said she was “over the moon” to have been selected for this prestigious prize, adding that she was humbled and honoured to exhibit alongside such amazing peers.

“Prizes such as this are so important as they provide hope and encouragement to creatives,” she said.

“With funding constantly being cut for arts programs, artists, designers and craftspeople often struggle for opportunities.

“I am so grateful that this prize provides such a fabulous platform and audience to showcase the effort and passion that goes into what we do.”

Ms Eriksmoen’s winning work, titled ‘Following years of

steady decline, we are witnessing a period of unprecedented growth’, is a reconfiguration of a rescued chair that incorporates salvaged parts from many other discarded chairs.

Made with hand tools and simple machinery on her back deck during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the work seeks to offer an antidote to society’s consumption-waste cycle and begins a critical conversation around the purpose of furniture beyond materiality and function.

“We don’t just throw away our loved ones, we accept their quirks, their brokenness, their age,” Ms Eriksmoen said.

“In the same way, if we feel connected to a special object, we don’t simply throw it away.

“With the rampant deforestation occurring and massive landfills that

are growing everyday, maybe it is time to reframe our understanding on what it is to commit to having an object in our homes?”

The winning work was awarded by a panel of three expert judges – Clare Beale (formerly executive director of Design Tasmania), Dr Scott Mayson (Associate Dean Research and Innovation at RMIT) and Niklavs Rubenis (senior lecturer in Object Design, UTAS School of Creative Arts and Media).

Other winners included Marta Figueiredo for their piece, ‘The Elementary Abacus’, and Mathew Sherwen for their piece, ‘Kodo’, who were awarded the highly commended and emerging artist prizes respectively, as well as a $1,500 non-acquisitive prize.

Building climate awareness CLARENCE Climate Action Group has started preparations for its Community Expo to take place on 18 September at the Citywide Church in Mornington.

There will be several guest speakers and community stallholders who will be available to talk to about positive steps towards sustainability and climate action from 11am until 2:30pm.

All the speakers will address topics relevant to numerous issues pertinent to the planet’s climate emergency.

Much of this will assist the Clarence community to come together and support the ways they can help reduce carbon emissions – if only in small ways.

The Community Expo will also include children’s and young people’s activities, as well as a café.

Clarence Climate Action Group committee member Alistair Primrose said there were a number

of climate emergencies around the world at the moment, and the Community Expo would provide the community with some important facts.

“There are many unprecedented events occurring such as huge fires in Siberia, floods and droughts, ocean warming, and the hottest days on some continents ever experienced,” he said.

“The Alaskan Columbia Icefield, walked on by my wife and I 13 years ago, will be banned to tourists in around seven years due to its rate of melting – it supplies fresh water to three great North American rivers.”

“The earth is trapping twice as much heat as in 2015 – weather patterns are changing.

Mr Primrose raised his concerns whether Tasmania could cope with a large influx of mainlanders following the state being recently declared as one of the safest places on Earth if there was an

‘apocalypse’.

“How many people living in Clarence have probably come across people moving south because of excessive heat and humidity, and perhaps having been affected badly by floods and droughts.”

“The economic costs are massive.”

Mr Primrose said the Clarence City Council had made some steps to make a difference by investing in more electric car charging stations and sending all its waste to the Copping waste treatment centre where the methane produced was being combusted to provide its energy supply.

“Active communities like Clarence can work to help reduce fossil fuel emissions for the sake of our grandchildren,” he said.

“Please contact your local politicians and Alderman to seek their support on climate change, and speak to them at the Community Expo.”

CLIMATE CHANGE CHAMPIONS CRUISE ELICIA Casey-Winter and Amos Cox were recently nominated for Clarence Climate Actions Climate Champions campaign, which shines a light on every day people doing their bit to fight climate change.

Twelve months ago, Ms Casey-Winter and Mr Cox bought an electric car after initially being a bit nervous about it.

“Electric cars haven’t really caught on yet in Tasmania, so we felt a bit like guinea pigs, but as soon as we got the car, we fell in love with it,” Ms Casey-Winter said.

It was Mr Cox’s parents who encouraged the young couple’s interest in electric vehicles.

“They’re building a house on our block and we were going to car share, but I work as a

piano tuner and do a lot of driving, so that wasn’t really practical,” Ms Casey-Winter said.

“Then we looked into it and crunched the numbers and decided to buy our own.

“It was mainly the environmental factor, but once we had it, we discovered the savings as well.”

They went through the Good Car Company, a Tasmanian-owned business that bulk-buys second-hand electric cars from Japan.

“It’s the most modern car we’ve ever owned,” Ms Casey-Winter said.

“We charge it every night, and our power bill has hardly gone up.

“The Good Car Company estimated it would cost us about $1.40 a night, but we use off-peak, so it’s actually somewhere between 40 and 80 cents.”

Mr Cox said there were downsides to having an electric car.

“They’ve brought out models in the last three years that have really increased the range, cars that do 300 to 500 kilometres on full

charge, but we’ve got the smaller range, so we need to plan ahead,” he said.

“However, I love how quiet it is – it’s smooth and modern, and it’s got a lot of power if you need it.”

New fundraiser supports our furry superheroes A NEW fundraising campaign from Guide Dogs Tasmania is encouraging students to dress up as their favourite superhero in September Guide Dogs Tasmania Super Schools is inviting childcares, early learning centres, primary and high schools, and community groups to register and host a superhero dress up day in September.

The funds will go towards Guide Dogs Tasmania’s own heroes, the furry four-legged kind that change the lives of

Tasmanians living with low vision, disability and illness.

“It takes more than two years and costs approximately $50,000 to train a guide dog,” Guide Dogs Tasmania community fundraising coordinator Kristy Wright said.

“We’re hoping that with this campaign and many groups signing up and hosting a superhero day with a small donation from each participant that takes part, that we can raise much needed funds for guide dogs.”

Ms Wright said every

school that signed up would go in the running to win a special visit from Guide Dogs Tasmania and ambassador dogs Murphy and Paris, and receive a presentation about Guide Dogs.

“We’re hoping to raise $10,000 and get about 50 groups signed up this year,” she said.

“It’s a simple concept and lots of fun, so we’re hoping this will go on to be an annual fundraising event where we get more groups involved.”

Tiny Tackers Children’s Centre in Glenorchy was one early childhood

centre that had signed up for the fundraiser.

“We love to be a part of the community and want our kids to be active parts as well,” educator, room leaders and assistant director Samantha Cross said.

“Our children love superheroes, so not only is it educational for them in they’re learning about something news, but they get tod something they love too.”

Winter Series ignites the city CLARENCE City Council’s Winter Series event is returning to Clarence this year, igniting the city with an eclectic and immersive performing arts program.

From 19 to 29 August, the sandstone walls of the Rosny Barn will be transformed into a cosy cabaretstyle venue with hearty drinks, delicious food and an exciting line-up of live entertainment.

Clarence City Council Deputy Mayor and chair of the Events Committee Alderman Heather Chong said the

annual festival, which was cancelled last year due to the lockdowns of 2020, had been curated to include something for everyone to enjoy.

“We are proud of the diverse line-up this year which boasts everything from variety shows to indie music, with dancing, fashion runways, cinema, jazz, and comedy in between,” she said.

“Events like the Winter Series are fantastic for providing ways for people to engage and connect with each other which is so important during

these colder months.”

The program features a breadth of homegrown Tassie talent including Poor Man’s Pot who will be kicking off the festival on 17 August with an evening of story-telling, comedy, and music.

Hobart Legacy makes a big impact HOBART Legacy Club has out out the call to the Eastern Shore community to support the fundraising efforts of Legacy Week.

Legacy Week is Legacy’s annual national appeal to raise awareness and funds for the families of incapacitated and deceased veterans.

Friend of Hobart Legacy Suzanne Curry said for almost 100 years, Legacy had kept the promise to thousands of veterans’ families by helping provide financial and social support for those in their care during times of hardship and grief.

“The Legacy Week appeal has been running since the 1940s and is a time for all Australians to show their support for the widows and children whose loved ones have served our country,” Friend of Hobart Legacy Suzanne Curry said.

“Hobart Legacy currently looks after more than 700 veterans’ families, providing services like welfare assistance, home visits, widows’ clubs, luncheons and educational support.”

This year’s appeal focuses on ‘Little Badge: Big Impact’ – the notion that even the smallest of donations will have a real and heartwarming impact on veterans’ families.

Merchandise, including badges, pens and Legacy bears, will be available at the Hobart Legacy Club

during Legacy Week, as well as suburban shopping centres and online.

All funds will go towards the local Legacy Club.

The community will have the opportunity to support Hobart Legacy Club during Legacy Week from Monday 30 August to Saturday 4 September 2021.

Junior and senior performers unite to entertain YOUTH dance company DRILL is premiering its major production, ‘Leviathan’, at the Theatre Royal’s studio theatre in August.

Leviathan will be performed by a united DRILL company, assembling both junior and senior company members to create a relentless, reflective and powerful work that puts front and centre the voices, bodies, concerns and curiosities of today’s youth.

At DRILL, young people learn skills in choreography, communication and collaboration through creating their own new movement, supported by professional choreographers.

The dancers range in age from nine through to 25, with DRILL having a strong commitment to, and focus on, the wellbeing of each young person they engage with.

Artistic director Isabella Stone said she was looking forward to delivering the live performance after the original scheduled performances were postponed due to COVID-19.

“It’s an exciting achievement for the company to present work at the Theatre Royal – for some of the cast members, it is the first time they’ve taken part in a major dance production and will also be the first time they’ve performed in a theatre,” she said.

“It’s huge work with all company members present in the space for the entire duration of the performance.

“It’s been beautiful watching the ideas and reflections about their future’s unfold, shared in conversation then manifested in their bodies and movement.

“It begins slowly, but builds momentum

crossing through strange, imagined landscapes and sensitive territories with playful, honest and raw performances.

DRILL dancers have also been working with choreographers Angela Barnard and Bethany Reece.

Ms Barnard has worked with DRILL for many years, including choreographing for senior company production ‘Neon’ in 2019 and junior company show ‘Change’ in 2020.

Sleep Out reaches new heights

The Salvation Army Hobart public relations officer Major Brad Watson on the suspended ledge from the Hotel Grand Chancellor that was used for the 2021 Salvos Sleep Out.

THE Salvos Sleep Out for 2021 has reached new heights with three participants having spent the night sleeping suspended from the side of the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart to raise attention and support for Tasmanians experiencing homelessness.

The annual Salvos Sleep Out had a fundraising goal of $60,000, which they

have exceeded, and will help people experiencing homelessness by keeping Hobart’s Street 2 Home Outreach Program running for another year.

“It’s a critical fundraiser because it helps us keep assertive outreach workers in the street and in the parks of Hobart, helping people connect to services while they’re experiencing

homelessness,” The Salvation Army Hobart public relations officer Brad Watson said.

“Quite often people are disconnected from the supports they need, and in our current housing climate where so many people are homeless, it’s just that support that enables them to build a relationship, feel secure and safe, and then get to the services that are going

to help them secure longterm housing.”

In its 11th year, the Sleep Out was held on 12 August at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart with additional event hubs in Glenorchy and Kingston.

Last year, Spidertech managing director Haig Rice slept suspended off the side of the Grand Chancellor.

This year, three people

had the opportunity to spend the night on a lightweight platform suspended from level 12.

“People slept in a harness, and they had a safety line attached to them at all times so there was no possibility of them falling to the ground,” Mr Rice said.

“I slept in one last year and it’s a long night, you certainly feel like you’re out in the atmosphere.”

Long term event supporter, Woolworths Shared Financial Services, locked in one of the suspended spots and was represented by finance and services manager Rob Fellowes.

“It is certainly a cause we’re really passionate about here in Tassie given the conditions, it’s a tough environment to be homeless and it’s a complex issue that we

hopefully can play a small role in improving,” Mr Fellowes said.

“It’s about the conversations, it’s about the networking, it’s about building awareness, and the more awareness, the more conversations we’re having to support the cause.”

Funded by Clarence City Council and facilitated by Paul Hamilton from All About Fitness, the free weekly exercise program encourages older adults from across Clarence to get active and stay strong.

for those looking for a low impact exercise class in a friendly environment, focusing on gentle exercises that are simple and effective for older adults.

Clarence City Council Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman said the classes were a fun, social approach to staying active.

“We are happy to support this program which helps promote a healthy lifestyle,” he

said.

“This is especially important during COVID when it’s even more important to stay active and healthy.

“Not only does this program help our city’s older residents stay healthy, but it is also a great way to socialise.”

A regular participant of the Rokeby class said, “I’m so glad I come to this class – it gets me moving and sets me up for a good day.”

Mr Hamilton, who is a highly qualified and passionate fitness leader with years of experience, said the best part of running this class was seeing results.

“I am so grateful to see people come along, rain or shine, and achieve personal results while also having a bit of fun,” he said.

“Seeing people improve at a personal level while working on coordination, flexibility,

cardio and strength is fantastic.

“The class focuses on both physical and mental fitness – keeping your mind focused and active is very important as we get older.”

SHIPLOADS STORES COMBAT CARDIAC ARREST WITH DEFIBRILLATORS SHIPLOADS has worked closely with St John Ambulance to install Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) in its stores across the state.

There are 13 Shiploads stores across the state, as well as a warehouse and office at Cambridge, with each one now having been installed with an AED. Shiploads managing director Ashley Wilson said a Shiploads store recently had an incident that required the use of a defibrillator, and it highlighted the need for early access to an AED was vital in Shiploads stores.

“We have registered the AEDs with Ambulance Tasmania, so they are available for members of the public, as well as the crew of Shiploads,” he said.

“The easy access app ‘AED Tas’ is a vital link for members of the public to quickly find and access the life-saving support of an AED. “Shiploads values AEDs as another way to assist and connect with the Tasmanian community and urge

other businesses to contact St John Ambulance to discuss how an AED can be installed in their business.”

St John Ambulance Tasmanian commercial operations manager Jeremy Bosworth said additional defibrillators in communities were needed.

“With the chance of survival of sudden cardiac arrest dropping, without CPR and defibrillation, at approximately 10 per cent per minute, getting CPR underway and a defib on the chest within the first three to five minutes is paramount to saving a life,” he said.

“More AEDs in the Tasmanian community equates to more defibrillators within five minutes of a sudden cardiac arrest victim.

“St John Ambulance encourages places of business and residences to contemplate including the provision of a defibrillator for their workforce, customers and wider communities.

“Once in place, opening up the accessibility of their

defibrillators by listing them on the ‘Early Access to Defibrillation Program’ is a great way of building community resilience and saving lives.”

With approximately 30,000 Australians dying from sudden cardiac arrest every year, Mr Bosworth said St John Ambulance was committed to increasing sudden cardiac arrest survival rates and were proud to have launched the St John G5 Defibrillator.

“The G5 Defibrillator uses advanced audio and video to guide first time users to apply defibrillation quickly and correctly,” he said.

“A unique feature of this unit is the Australian accented audio prompts that helps calm the rescuer and ensure instruction is relatable and easy to act upon in a stressful situation.

“The harsh reality is that without effective CPR and the use of a defibrillator, a person in sudden cardiac arrest will not survive, but with defibrillation and CPR they have up to a 70 per cent chance of surviving.”

Free Hepatitis C tests available in Rosny

Megan Hughes will be at the Rosny NSP every Friday in August to perform blood tests for Hepatitis C.

EVERY Friday in August, registered nurse Megan Hughes from Sexual Health Tasmania will perform free blood testing for the Hepatitis C virus in a welcoming, confidential environment at the Rosny Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) in the Clarence Integrated Care Centre.

Ms Hughes said a simple blood test was the first step towards treatment that would cure someone of Hepatitis C. “Hep C is a bloodborne virus that damages a person’s liver,” she said.

“The virus can be transmitted through the sharing of injecting equipment or if you get a tattoo done with equipment that hasn’t been sterilised, but it’s important to understand

that any blood-to-blood contact carries this risk.”

“Symptoms can include tiredness, trouble sleeping, mood swings, anxiety and depression, nausea, and poor appetite, but it’s also possible to live with the virus without feeling sick, so the earlier you seek treatment the

better.

“If you return a positive test, we’ll find out more about your liver health and give you a prescription for either an eight or 12 week course of one tablet a day that you can take straight to a pharmacy.”

testing will be held at the Clarence Integrated Centre NSP, 18-22 Bayfield Street, every Friday in August from 9am to 4pm – the clinic is closed from 12:30pm to 1pm.

Waterfront Hotel encourages community to speak up on crime SOMETIMES an anonymous tip-off is all it takes to solve a crime, but getting people to speak up when they see or know something can be a challenge.

The Waterfront Hotel is helping Crime Stoppers Tasmania tackle this dilemma by rolling out posters, coasters and table talkers to encourage its patrons to make an anonymous report when they see something suspect in their community.

Waterfront Hotel manager Sharon Adams said the messaging

had already become a talking point among staff and visitors to the venue.

“In order to be part of a community we all have to watch out for and protect each other from those who seek to do harm,” Ms Adams said.

“Crime Stoppers do such great work in keeping Tasmanians safe and I’m proud that the Waterfront Hotel can contribute to this by helping get the message out there.”

Crime Stoppers chief executive officer Jane Crosswell said safer

communities benefited everyone and as a key social hub, the Waterfront Hotel was an important and effective setting to help share this message.

“Crimes can be solved with the assistance of the community and having this support from the Waterfront Hotel will go a long way in making sure the community knows when and where to report criminal activity,” she said.

“No one knows a community better than the people who live and work there and

it’s important to have a simple and accessible way to report activity that doesn’t seem right.

“Something as simple as a report on the colour or brand of clothing someone is wearing can be the very thing that helps solve the crime and ultimately keep Tasmanian communities safe.

“You can make a report anonymously, and we encourage people if they see something unusual, to speak up but stay secret.”

RICHMOND COMMUNITY CALLS FOR LOCAL SUPPORT RICHMOND businesses and tourist attractions are feeling the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the number mainland visitors on the decline due to lockdowns across the country.

However, they’re calling on the locals to support the community and take a drive to check out what the historic town has to offer.

Prior to the suspension of cruise ships, Kim Kay (pictured) and her iconic Richmond Bakery were visited by 12 coaches of cruise passengers a day.

However, since the cruise ships stopped coming and international borders closed, the bakery’s business has slumped by 50 per cent.

“It has hit us pretty hard especially from that December through to the end of March period when we received the bulk of cruise visitors,” Ms Kay said.

Ms Kay encouraged people to come and visit Richmond and its many attractions.

“We have great customer support, we like to have a chat with our visitors and point them in the right direction on where to visit and what to do,” she said.

“Have a look around

the beautiful village, there’s lots of shops to visit and attractions to see, and you can also have a curried scallop pie and raspberry tart.”

Nine years ago, former resident policeman David Kearney and his wife Janine acquired the lease of popular attraction the convict era Richmond Gal, which was built in stages beginning in 1825 and was the only one to house both male and female convicts.

Prior to the pandemic, around 45,000 people visited the site per year, but from late March to early December last year, the gaol closed its doors.

The gaol has since reopened, but Mr Kearney said he was excited for interstate visitors to return.

“People are scared to travel because of the pandemic and at one stage visitors to the gaol were

down by nearly half,” he said.

“Tourism has become massive compared to when I first came here.

“Normally, everyone loves to come to Richmond to see the oldest bridge in Australia, the oldest Catholic church and the oldest gaol – Richmond has just so much to offer visitors really.”

Carnival Australia and P&O Cruises Australia president Sture Myrmell said Richmond’s experience demonstrated the importance of the cruises and other methods of interstate travel to local economies.

“Businesses both small and large benefit from economic activity generated by cruising, but the flow has now been cut off for more than a year with no indication of when the tap might be turned on again,” he said.
