Council News CLARENCE CITY COUNCIL Key decisions from the Special Meeting held on Monday 15 June 2026 • Council adopted the City of Clarence 2026-27 Budget and Annual Plan.

Key decisions from the Council Meeting held on Monday 29 June 2026 • Council refused an application to extend the planning permit for a 1 Lot Subdivision at 1 Monique Street, Howrah for a further two-year period.

• Council approved a planning application for additions and alterations (single dwelling) at 7 Willoughby Court, Clarendon Vale.

Local families calling out Hobart Legacy calls on a new generation of volunteers for more childcare support FROM FRONT PAGE

Clarence Councillor Daniel Hulme FAMILIES in Clarence are facing long waiting lists and acute shortages of early childhood education and care, and they want Clarence City Council to help ease the pressure.

That is the clear message from the results of a recent survey conducted by Clarence Councillor Daniel Hulme.

People from throughout the City of Clarence responded to my survey, from Geilston Bay to Opossum Bay, with responses received from parents, grandparents and educators.

The focus of the responses was on the shortages in child care, with over 60 percent of respondents saying they had faced long waiting lists or difficulties getting their children into child care.

Many also faced challenges with out of

pocket costs of child care.

This was reflected in many of the comments, with families talking about being on waiting lists for over a year, grandparents looking after grandchildren because their parents had no other option, and vacation care places filling up within minutes of being offered.

There were also a lot of comments about the value of qualified educators and the need to support them with decent pay and manageable workloads.

The majority of respondents said child care was important to them because it helped them balance work and family responsibilities, gave their children access to quality playbased learning and gave their children an opportunity to play and socialise with other children.

Most respondents were also in favour of Clarence expanding its child care services,

with more than 70 percent saying Clarence should offer more outside school hours care places in particular.

We can see from these survey responses that there is a strong community sentiment in favour of offering more child care places.

Given Council runs these services on a cost recovery basis, providing more access to child care can help make families’ lives easier without an ongoing additional impost on our ratepayers.”

The survey was promoted through flyers and Facebook advertising.

Cr Hulme has shared the findings with fellow councillors and survey respondents who provided their contact details and has sent the data to Council’s community services team to help inform the development of a Children’s Services Strategy.

HOBART Legacy is calling on a new generation of Tasmanians to help continue more than 100 years of supporting the families of veterans.

With more than half of Hobart Legacy’s volunteers now aged over 75, the organisation is encouraging people of all ages, particularly younger members of the community to step forward and help ensure its vital work continues well into the future.

Hobart Legacy currently supports around 400 beneficiaries across Southern Tasmania, including widows, widowers,

children and families of veterans, providing practical assistance, social connection and advocacy following the injury or death of a loved one through military service.

Hobart Legacy President David Waddle OAM said while the organisation’s mission had remained unchanged for more than a century, its future depended on attracting new volunteers.

“Our volunteers have dedicated countless hours to supporting veterans’ families, but many of them are now reaching an age where it’s becoming harder to continue,” he said.

“We’re looking for people who want to make a

genuine difference in their community.

“You don’t need a military background, just compassion, a willingness to help and a little of your time.”

Mr Waddle said volunteers played an important role in helping Legacy fulfil the promise made more than a century ago to care for the families of those who served.

“Legacy was built on the simple promise to look after the families left behind. That promise is just as important today as it was in 1923,” he said.

“Whether it’s visiting a beneficiary, helping with

fundraising, making phone calls or lending a hand at community events, every volunteer helps ensure veterans’ families continue receiving the support they deserve.”

Hobart Legacy offers two volunteer pathways.

Legatees work directly with beneficiaries, while Friends of Hobart Legacy support fundraising activities and community events.

GARDENING IN JULY Seed potatoes are available in the shops now and can be planted this month in areas that do not get frosts and next month for frosty areas.

To plant your potatoes cut the larger ones into pieces, making sure that each piece has two eyes, the smaller potatoes can be planted whole.

Plant them in a sunny area protected from strong winds in rows 60-90cm apart, the soil should not be to rich but the addition cow manure and lime or some blood and bone will get things moving.

Plant the potatoes at a depth of around 4cm and cover, and then when the plants emerge and are about 10cm tall hill around the plants with soil and continue to do this every couple of weeks until flowering has stopped.

By doing this you will stop the potatoes that form close to the surface from going green and encourage more potatoes to grow from the stem.

Pink eyes can be dug while the plant is still in flower, all other varieties should be harvested after flowering.

Potatoes can be removed, as you need them by removing some of the soil taking what you need then putting the soil back without damaging the main plant. Potatoes that are to be stored should be left in the ground until the plant has died off.

Grants open for community projects COMMUNITY groups, artists and organisations across Clarence are being encouraged to apply for funding through the City of Clarence’s Cultural and Community Grants Program, with applications now open.

The program offers

grants of up to $10,000 for projects that strengthen community connections, encourage creativity, promote sustainability and improve wellbeing across the municipality.

City of Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the grants had helped bring a

wide range of local ideas to life.

“Every year we see incredible ideas from across our community that help bring people together, celebrate creativity and improve life on the eastern shore,” he said.

“These grants provide

practical support for projects that make a real difference locally, whether that’s through arts and culture, sustainability initiatives, community wellbeing or events that connect people.”

Previous recipient Owen Tubb said council funding

had been instrumental in staging the theatre production 3-in-a-Bed at Rosny Barn.

“The funding meant we could properly reimburse our actors and production crew, and it gave emerging performers and crew the chance to gain valuable

experience,” he said.

Eastside Repair Café coordinator Katie Kristensen said a grant had also helped expand recycling and waste reduction initiatives.

“The funding allowed us to introduce more recycling options for hard-to-recycle

items and encourage people to think twice before throwing things away,” she said.

Applications for the 2026 Cultural and Community Grants Program close on 16 September.

Refreshed identity for CatholicCare Community rallies for cancer RESIDENTS of One Hill Estate at Seven Mile Beach came together recently for a successful Big Morning Tea fundraiser, raising money to support the work of Cancer Council Tasmania.

The event featured an impressive spread of homemade cakes, slices and savoury treats, along with raffles, door prizes, artwork sales and a trade table, giving attendees

plenty of opportunities to support the cause.

All funds raised will go to Cancer Council Tasmania to help support cancer research, prevention, advocacy and services for Tasmanians affected by cancer.

City of Clarence Deputy Mayor Allison Ritchie praised the generosity of residents and volunteers.

“The residents and volunteers created

an event that was not only enjoyable and welcoming, but one that will make a meaningful difference to the lives of Tasmanians affected by cancer,” she said.

Guest speakers Annette Reid from Look Good Feel Better and Geraldine Robinson from Cancer Council Tasmania also spoke about the support available to people and families navigating a cancer

diagnosis.

Ms Ritchie said the event highlighted the strength of community spirit on the eastern shore.

“The generosity, kindness and commitment shown by everyone involved was truly inspiring. It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when a community comes together to support others,” she said.

CATHOLICCARE Tasmania has officially launched its refreshed brand identity.

CEO Julia Mangan, speaking at the official launch in Hobart in front of staff, community partners and other stakeholders, said the refresh was a “renewed commitment” rather than a new direction.

Ms Mangan said everything that made the organisation what it was, what it does and how it does its work is not changing, but the updated branding reflected an internal reflection and rediscovery.

“The rebrand followed a two-year journey of “returning to our roots”,” she said.

“We have refocused and re-centred ourselves on our mission and identity. At the centre of everything we do is the dignity of the human

person.”

At the event, Vicar General Fr Shammi Perera said CatholicCare had been doing what the Gospel commanded the Church to do quietly and faithfully for 60 years.

“This rebranding is more than just a logo,” he said.

“It is a reclaiming. A sharpening. A renewal.

It is the same mission but spoken with greater clarity.

“CatholicCare is the very eyes, feet, heart and hands of Jesus Christ.

“Often without fanfare, it has stood with those who are vulnerable, broken, anxious, grieving, displaced, overwhelmed, forgotten.”

Central to the new identity is the image of a path, symbolising the organisation’s approach to walking alongside Tasmanians through difficult and hopeful

moments alike.

The design draws inspiration from the parable of the Good Samaritan, reflecting values of compassion, hope, courage and connection.

“Our role is not to determine people’s destination, our role is to walk beside them, support, encourage and empower them,” Ms Mangan said.

CatholicCare Tasmania has grown significantly over time and now delivers a broad range of services and programs across the state. It supported almost 9,000 Tasmanians last year across services including early learning, multicultural community support and youth services.

Ms Mangan paid tribute to the team members responsible for the brand identity.

Top honour for local distiller KILLARA Distillery founder and owner Kristy Lark has been recognised as Australia’s Distiller of the Year, taking out the prestigious honour at the Australian Distillers Association Awards in Adelaide.

A second-generation distiller and daughter of Australian whisky pioneers Bill and Lyn

Lark, Kristy has spent almost three decades in the spirits industry.

Before establishing Killara Distillery in Richmond, she served as head distiller and general manager at Lark Distillery.

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of Killara Distillery.

Set on a 26-acre

property in the Coal River Valley, Killara grows a range of botanicals, including juniper for its gin, while producing single malt whisky, gin, vodka and seasonal liqueurs on site.

“It is always pleasing to see hard work and dedication rewarded,” City of Clarence Mayor Blomeley said.

“Being named Distiller of the Year is an outstanding achievement and testament to Kristy’s extensive skills and years of exemplary service to the industry.”

Killara Distillery at 32 Ogilvie Road Richmond is open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday.

Lions back school breakfast program

STUDENTS at Southern Support School will benefit from an expanded breakfast program and new equipment thanks to a $1,500 donation from the Lions Club of Clarence.

The donation will help fund the school’s Breakfast Program, ensuring students begin the day with a nutritious meal, while also providing 30 specialised Subo bottles designed to support students in developing independent feeding skills.

Southern Support School, based on Hobart’s eastern shore, provides tailored education and support for students with diverse and often complex needs.

City of Clarence Deputy Mayor Allison Ritchie said the Lions Club’s contribution would make a meaningful difference to students both in and beyond the classroom.

“I commend the Lions Club of Clarence for recognising the importance of programs like this,” she said.

“This funding will directly support practical initiatives that enhance both student wellbeing and independence.”

The Breakfast Program provides students with a healthy start to the day, helping improve concentration, wellbeing and readiness to learn.

“Our Biggest Morning Tea is always a wonderful community event, with all

“The fierce but friendly competition between some of the ladies always guarantees a delicious spread and, as I’ve discovered over the years, it’s always advisable to skip breakfast before attending.”

GUIDES Tasmania has celebrated 115 years of empowering girls and young women while marking the beginning of a new chapter with the appointment of its youngest-ever State Commissioner.

Members, volunteers, families and supporters gathered at Orana earlier this month for the State Commissioner handover ceremony, which also recognised the contribution of outgoing commissioner Linda Durran after five years in the role.

by Governor of Tasmania and Girl Guides Tasmania Patron Her Excellency the Honourable Caroline Wells, along with Girl Guides Australia Chief Commissioner Helen Reid.

“For 115 years, Girl Guides Tasmania has provided girls and young women with

“The positive impact of Guiding can be seen throughout our communities, where former and current Guides continue to make valuable contributions in leadership, service and civic life.”

Ms Ritchie congratulated Ms Darlington Beresford on her appointment and thanked Ms Durran for her leadership.

“Amberlei’s appointment is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the strength of leadership

development within the Guiding movement,” she said.

Neighbours connect over a cuppa RESIDENTS gathered at Banjo’s Bakery in Lindisfarne recently for a Cuppa with a Cop event aimed at strengthening community connections and promoting local safety initiatives.

Hosted by the newly formed Lindisfarne, Rose Bay and Geilston Bay Neighbourhood Watch, the event gave locals the opportunity to meet Tasmania Police, discuss issues affecting the area and learn more about crime prevention in an informal setting.

City of Clarence Deputy Mayor Allison Ritchie said the strong turnout reflected the community’s

commitment to creating safer neighbourhoods.

“It was wonderful to see local residents come together to meet their neighbours, engage with Tasmania Police and have meaningful conversations about issues affecting our community,” she said.

“Building strong relationships between residents, community groups and police is one of the most effective ways to enhance community safety and wellbeing.”

The event also featured members of the Lindisfarne CWA branch, who showcased homemade jams,

cookbooks and tea towels, highlighting the role local organisations play in bringing the community together.

Ms Ritchie thanked Neighbourhood Watch Tasmania’s Peter Edwards and local coordinator Kenny Smith for helping establish the new neighbourhood watch group and organise the event.

“Community safety is a shared responsibility, and events like these help foster trust, encourage conversations and strengthen the networks that make our neighbourhoods safer and more resilient,” she said.

Her central message was that most small businesses are already doing the right things.

They have a website, they post on social media and they have tried some advertising.

The session covered five practical areas: websites and branding, getting found online, social media, digital advertising, and email marketing and automation.

Fiona’s grounded approach to each topic gave attendees something concrete to take away.

The thread running throughout the session resonated strongly with the Business Eastern Shore community.

Digital marketing is not about replacing

the trust that word of mouth builds.

It is about making sure that when someone is referred to you and looks you up online, everything they find reflects the reputation that earned the referral.

Experienced operators and newer business owners alike found themselves reflecting on their own digital presence and what they could do differently.

The session prompted several attendees to pull out their phones and check their own websites on the spot, one of several practical exercises that drew candid reactions from the room.

“Most businesses are doing the right things, just not quite enough, and the gap between doing it and doing it well is exactly where most small businesses lose customers without ever knowing it,” Iceberg Digital Marketing co-founder Fiona Carvalho said.

Protect what you value – Only working smoke alarms save lives Chris Collins, Director Community Fire Safety, Tasmania Fire Service AS winter approaches, Tasmania Fire Service is urging all Tasmanians to make home fire safety a priority.

House fires most often become fatal at night, when people are asleep and unaware.

During sleep, our sense of smell does not wake us, and a fire can spread rapidly before anyone realises.

A working smoke alarm is the only reliable early warning, giving you and your family the precious seconds needed to escape.

Whether someone sleeps in a bedroom, on a

couch, in a caravan, a tiny home, or in a favourite chair, a fire can start and spread without warning.

That is why it is critical to have a working smoke alarm installed wherever anyone sleeps.

Now is the time to take simple, effective steps to protect what matters.

Tasmania Fire Service recommends installing smoke alarms in every sleeping area, in hallways leading to bedrooms, in living areas, garages, and on every level of multistorey homes.

Just as important is making sure they work.

Test them regularly and clean them to keep them free from dust and insects.

A working smoke alarm is only part of the picture.

Every household should have a practiced home fire escape plan.

Know at least two ways out of every room, make sure everyone in the household understands the plan, and practise it so it becomes second nature, even if you are woken suddenly.

We also encourage all Tasmanians to reduce fire risks around the home: • Never leave cooking unattended.

• Keep heaters at least two metres away from anything flammable.

• Avoid overloading power boards or running cords under carpets or

rugs.

• Be safe with lithium-ion batteries and chargers. Choose trusted sellers and follow manufacturers’ instructions.

• In the garage, store flammable materials safely, avoid clutter near power tools and chargers, and unplug equipment when not in use.

Do not wait for a fire to happen. Visit fire.tas.gov. au for checklists, tips, and resources to help you stay safe.

TASMANIA’S Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) Scheme is an important way of safeguarding vulnerable people, including children, in our community from the risk of harm.

Our Scheme has important protections in place, including requiring anyone who works or volunteers in a regulated activity (such as child care and teaching) to hold a RWVP. Why should you renew your RWVP early?

Right now, there are thousands of workers and volunteers renewing

their RWVPs. These high volumes mean it may take longer than the usual six weeks for your renewal to be processed. Therefore leaving your renewal to the last minute means you run the risk of your RWVP expiring.

We want you to keep your RWVP active so you can keep working and volunteering with vulnerable people, including children.

TASMANIANS facing financial hardship will have increased support to pay their electricity bills, with the Tasmanian Government and Aurora Energy doubling their financial support of the Energy Hardship Fund commencing 1 July.

On top of historical funding of $350,000, the state government has provided an additional $150,000 in the 2026 Budget.

Aurora Energy will also provide an additional

$200,000 to top up the fund, increasing total support to $700,000.

The fund, administered

by The Salvation Army alongside 42 emergency relief providers located around the state, is experiencing higher than normal demand for their services as more Tasmanians feel the impacts of cost-of-living pressures.

Both Aurora Energy and the Tasmanian Government are aware of the impacts cost-of-living

pressures can place on customers who need help paying their bill.

Salvation Army Doorways Manager TAS Stacey Milbourne said the additional support had arrived at a vital moment for Tasmanians doing it tough.

“Every day we meet individuals and families who are being forced into impossible choices as living costs continue to rise,” she said.

For those who are having to choose between

heating their homes, putting food on the table or paying rent, this support will make a significant difference.”

Minister for Community and Multicultural Affairs Roger Jaensch said the government was committed to delivering enhanced and ongoing assistance to those in need.

“Cost of living pressures continue to impact many Tasmanian households, and by increasing the amount of support available we can provide

meaningful relief for those who need it most,” he said.

“Our government is delivering further cost of living relief for vulnerable Tasmanians by increasing the Energy Hardship Fund to $500 000 per year until June 2029.

“We’re also delivering a range of generous and targeted concessions to support eligible households, including the low-income annual electricity concession, medical heating and cooling concessions and

life support concessions.”

outcomes of the planning process was the decision to retain two-way traffic across Richmond Bridge after strong community feedback. A proposal to reduce the bridge to a single lane was removed from the final plan.

City of Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the final document reflected the views of residents and businesses.

“People told us they wanted improvements to pedestrian safety,

accessibility, public spaces and visitor management, while preserving the unique character and shared history that makes Richmond so special,” he said.

Future priorities identified in the plan include upgraded footpaths and crossings, improved accessibility, better public spaces, additional landscaping and improved management of parking and visitor movements.

The master plan is a strategic framework rather than a detailed design, with individual projects to be subject to further planning, heritage assessments, funding and community consultation before construction begins.

The first project to be guided by the plan will be upgrades to the Richmond Village Green and its playground, with design work already funded by council.

New childcare centre opens at Glebe Hill FAMILIES in Howrah and surrounding suburbs will soon have greater access to childcare, with a new early learning centre opening at Glebe Hill to help meet growing demand in Hobart’s south-east.

The $9 million Green Leaves Early Learning centre on Commerce Drive will provide 106 places for children aged six weeks to six years and is expected to welcome its first families later this month.

The purpose-built facility was officially opened last week following a 10-month construction project and sits alongside the Glebe Hill Village shopping precinct.

Tipalea Partners chief executive Scott Spanton said the centre had been developed in response to increasing demand for childcare in the rapidly growing Clarence municipality.

“South-east Tasmania is growing, and demand for quality childcare is growing

with it,” he said.

“Families need more places, not longer waiting lists. This new centre will provide high-quality childcare in a convenient location alongside retail and essential services, helping make life easier for local parents.”

According to project figures, around 1,200 children under the age of five live in the Howrah area, yet there are only 356 licensed childcare places across five existing centres, all of which are operating at capacity.

The new centre includes seven classrooms, a parent lounge, landscaped outdoor play areas featuring a bike track and market garden and a commercial kitchen where meals will be prepared on site.

Green Leaves Early Learning also offers kindergarten and preschool programs as part of its early learning model.

Learning chief executive Mark McDonald-Smith said the organisation was looking forward to becoming part of the local community.

“Green Leaves delivers high-quality early childhood education and care through engaging learning environments and experienced educators,” he said.

“We’re excited to welcome local families and become part of the Howrah community.”

by Brown Falconer Architects, with a strong focus on creating welcoming indoor and outdoor spaces inspired by the surrounding environment.

It also features an interactive public artwork designed to encourage communication and imaginative play.

The project marks Tipalea Partners’ seventh development in Tasmania and its first childcare facility in the state.

Hobart Exercise Physiology expands with second clinic in Lindisfarne HOBART Exercise Physiology is set to expand its services across Southern Tasmania, announcing the opening of a second clinic in Lindisfarne in September 2026.

Since opening its doors in South Hobart in 2019, the locally owned and operated business has grown steadily, helping thousands of Tasmanians improve their health, manage chronic conditions, recover from injury and maintain their independence through evidence-based exercise programs.

Many people want to help their children, grandchildren, family members or charities by giving them money or assets.

You are allowed to do that.

There are no rules that stop you from giving away your own money or property.

But if you’re getting or claiming a payment from Centrelink, it is important to understand how gifting can affect that payment.

When Centrelink looks at gifting, we are looking at whether you have given away cash, assets or income and received less than market value in return or nothing at all.

A gift can be obvious, like handing

over $20,000 to a family member.

It can also happen in other ways.

For example, if you sell a car worth $8,000 for $3,000, the difference may be treated as a gift. If you pay someone else’s bills, school fees or loan repayments and do not expect that money back, that can also be a gift.

Donating money to a church or charity is also gifting.

There is a gifting free area, which is the amount you can give away and Services Australia accepts you don’t have that money anymore.

It’s the same amount regardless of whether you are a single person or a member of a couple, a maximum of $10,000 in any one financial year, and a total

maximum of $30,000 over a rolling five financial year period which can’t include more than $10,000 in a financial year.

If you give away more than those limits, the amount above the free area is still counted as your asset for five years from the date of the gift.

We also apply deeming to the amount above the free area.

That means we use the deeming rules to work out how much income that amount would earn, even if you are no longer getting any real income from it.

This can affect both the assets test and the income test.

In some cases, it can reduce your payment.

In other cases, it may affect whether you

qualify at all.

That is why it is important to think carefully before making any gifts.

You also need to tell Centrelink when you make a gift.

If you don’t tell us, you may be paid too much and have to pay money back later.

The safest approach is to let us know as soon as the gift happens.

Every situation is different. Some transfers may be treated differently depending on the circumstances.

If you are thinking about gifting money, property or other assets, it’s a good idea to get information before you act.

That can help you understand the effect on your payment and avoid surprises later.

South Arm Men’s Shed builds community

South Arm Peninsula Men’s Shed members and Councillor Daniel Hulme at the Open Day

THE South Arm Peninsula Men’s Shed celebrated the success of its work in the community with an Open Day, inviting interested community members to tour the shed and enjoy a barbecue breakfast.

The Open Day came shortly after the Shed held a fundraising quiz night, which was well supported by local businesses and residents.

The Shed is close to

completing its dust-free room, which house a laser cutter, 3D printer and new electronics section, earning it the nickname ‘the nerd room’ by some members.

And an outside storage area has been completed providing lockable, safe storage for timber and metal products.

SAPMS President Ian Glover said there was a lot of activity at the shed, not only benefiting members but also

contributing to other local community groups, including designing and constructing new outside storage for the RSL’s waste wheely bins and cooking oil containers, making and engraving a Huon pine trophy for the Iron Pot Golf Club and designing and constructing four trophies from Tasmanian species timber for the South Arm Board Riders Association.

“We have also laser

cut a further 1,600 penguin cutouts for the Australian Antarctic Division and constructed a new Iron Pot featured donation box for the South Arm Peninsula Residents Association,” he said.

“We have also run a workshop for the Bee Collective to support southern women bee keepers and are mentoring two home schooled students in a skills based woodwork program.”

RACT and Spirit of Tasmania partner to boost visitor spending across Tasmania RACT has partnered with the Spirit of Tasmania to extend the benefits of RACT Member Rewards to Tasmanians and visitors alike while driving greater visitor spending across Tasmania and supporting local communities and businesses.

RACT already offers Tasmanians (over 16 years old) free access to its Lifestyle Membership, giving members savings on everyday costs including fuel, car servicing, groceries and school holiday activities.

That program has

now been extended to include a five per cent discount on Spirit of Tasmania standard adult passenger fares.

While visitors travelling to Tasmania on the Spirit will secure access to discounts on fuel, accommodation, attractions and experiences as part of a joint initiative to encourage visitors to travel further and support the economy during their stay in Tasmania.

RACT Group Chief Executive Officer Mark Mugnaioni said the partnership was

designed to extend savings to Tasmanians and bring more visitors and more spending to the state to support local businesses.

“The partnership forms part of a broader initiative to give Tasmanians free access to its Lifestyle Membership program for 12 months, making it easier than ever to unlock savings and benefits,” he said.

“We are pleased to announce that now includes offering all RACT members a five per cent discount on standard adult

passenger fares when booking through the dedicated RACT member offer page.

“In addition, Spirit of Tasmania passengers who are eligible, can access RACT’s Member Rewards program, unlocking the same discounts including savings on a range of Tasmanian tourism experiences, travel and accommodation offers.

“Every visitor who travels across Bass Strait contributes to the Tasmanian economy, spending at local service stations, accommodation

providers and businesses in towns and communities around the state.”

TT-Line Chief Executive Officer Chris Carbone said the initiative was developed following discussions between the two organisations about working together to support Tasmanians.

“We are really pleased to be partnering with the RACT, another iconic Tasmanian company, to encourage visitors to spread economic benefits to all corners of the state

by extending their stay for as long as possible,” he said.

“RACT Lifestyle Membership will provide passengers with discounts on fuel, accommodation, attractions and experiences across the state.”

The Spirit of Tasmania discount is an addition to the already generous suite of benefits available through RACT’s Lifestyle Membership for Tasmanians over 16.

Members can already access savings on fuel, car servicing, groceries

and everyday purchases, along with school holiday activities and entertainment.

“Families can also access savings on school holiday activities and entertainment such as cinemas and attractions including Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary and other accommodation and travel partners,” Mr Mugnaioni said.

People can sign up online, in-store or over the phone, with membership sent to new members within two days of sign-up.

Geilston Bay Open attracts strong field

SOME of Tasmania’s top tennis players converged on Geilston Bay this month, with 145 competitors taking part in the annual Geilston Bay Open.

The tournament concluded with an exciting finals program, with Joshua Ryan claiming the Men’s Singles title ahead of runner-up Edward Bourchier, while Zoe Hanlon won the Women’s Singles championship with Imogen Ransley finishing runner-up.

City of Clarence Deputy Mayor Allison Ritchie said the tournament once again highlighted the strength

of community sport in Clarence.

“It was wonderful to see so many talented players competing in a friendly and welcoming environment,” she said.

“With 145 entrants taking part, this has been a tremendous weekend of tennis and a great example of the strength of community sport in Clarence.”

Ms Ritchie congratulated all competitors and acknowledged the work of Geilston Bay Tennis Club volunteers in delivering the event.

“Events like this do not happen without dedicated volunteers

and strong community leadership,” she said.

“I would like to sincerely thank club president Campbell Palfrey, tournament organiser Tony Blom and the many volunteers whose hard work ensured another successful Geilston Bay Open.”

The Geilston Bay Open is one of the club’s major annual tournaments and continues to attract players from across Tasmania while showcasing the important role community sporting clubs play in encouraging participation and healthy, active lifestyles.

SOME of Tasmania’s best squash players converged on Bellerive in early July when Eastside Squash hosted the Tasmanian Masters Squash Association Championships.

The tournament attracted 45 competitors from across Tasmania, with several players also travelling from Victoria and New South Wales to compete.

Eastside members enjoyed a strong showing, with Michael Brown winning the second division, Simon Bamford claiming the third division title and Wendy Ashley taking out the fifth division.

Paul Brewtnall, from Devonport, won the first division, while

Bruno Fernandini, from Penguin, claimed the fourth division honours.

City of Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley presented trophies to the winners and said the championships highlighted both the high standard of competition and the inclusive nature of the sport.

“It was wonderful to welcome both locals and visitors to our squash centre and watch such a high standard of play,” he said.

“Squash really is a sport for everyone and, with competitors ranging in age from 35 to 84, the championships showcased great sportsmanship and plenty of enjoyment.”

A game, a night and a lunch to remember for CFC CLARENCE Football Club has enjoyed a memorable fortnight, attracting big crowds and some of football’s biggest names while celebrating the strength of its community.

North Hobart Oval came alive on 13 June

when Richmond great Dustin Martin pulled on the red and white guernsey for a special celebrity appearance with the Roos, drawing football fans from across the state.

Following the match, the club hosted a dinner

featuring Brisbane Lions premiership coach Chris Fagan, AFL Executive General Manager of Football Performance Gregg Swan, former Richmond champion Jack Riewoldt and Martin.

The evening was

made even more special for Chris Fagan’s mother, Beth, who was joined by both her sons, Chris and Grant, and other family members for the occasion.

The celebrations continued the following weekend when more

than 100 people attended the club’s annual Ladies Lunch at Ninja Stadium.

Speaking at the event, Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley praised the work of volunteers who continue to drive the

club’s success.

“Nat Belbin and her committee have done a power of work to ensure the club remains vibrant,” he said.

“Recent successes, both on and off the field, deserve recognition and our

thanks.

“With both the Lauderdale Bombers and Clarence Roos hitting their straps, it would be great to see them face off again in this year’s SFL Premier League Grand Final.”

Southern Wolves celebrate grand final success THE Southern Wolves have celebrated one of the most successful weeks in the club’s history, with all three senior teams reaching the Basketball Tasmania Senior League grand finals.

The club’s women’s team claimed its fifth consecutive championship, while the men’s and reserve men’s teams both finished runners-up after impressive finals campaigns.

The women’s side was led by Ellie Collins alongside rising star Chloe Broomhall, who was recently named as The Southern Wolves championship winning senior womens team

Southern Wolves is a representative program made up of players from Cavaliers Basketball Club and New Norfolk Basketball Club, providing a pathway for local athletes to progress from junior basketball through to senior competition.

Club officials said having all three senior teams qualify for grand finals reflected the strength of the program and the commitment

shown by players throughout the season.

The men’s and reserve men’s teams both finished fourth at the end of the regular season before producing strong finals performances to earn places in their respective deciders.

While both teams fell short in their grand finals, club officials praised their determination and resilience throughout the season.

The women’s fifth straight title was described as a reward for the culture and consistency built within

the group over several years.

Many of the club’s senior players have progressed through the junior ranks at Cavaliers and New Norfolk before representing the Southern Wolves, highlighting the success of the pathway in developing local basketball talent.

Club officials said the achievements sent a strong message to young players that hard work and dedication could create opportunities to compete at the highest level in Tasmania.
