Council News • Council approved a Planning Application for additions and alterations including rectification Works at 242 Tranmere Road, Tranmere.

• Council noted a petition regarding Bayview Park, Lauderdale, and authorised the Chief Executive Officer to write to petitioners acknowledging their concerns and advising of Council’s decision.

While Neil’s 15-night stay at Seven Mile Beach resulted in an estimated $31,540 in traffic management, staffing and repairs to public infrastructure, it was wonderful to see so many people embrace the humour of our social media call-out asking where we could send him the invoice.

The community event brought together residents, local organisations, volunteers and businesses, with Clarence Deputy Mayor Allison Ritchie praising the strong turnout and community spirit on display.

CWA Lindisfarne celebrates 85 years

GARDENING IN AUGUST Have you ever thought about growing your own potatoes, as long as you plant so that the flowers are not affected by frosts they are a relatively easy care crop. Give them a sunny position out of strong winds, and it is best to use certified seed to avoid diseases.

Plant the potatoes either whole or cut into pieces with at least two eyes into rows around 30cm deep, which have had a light dressing of cow manure or blood and bone, and lime.

When the plants are about 10cm tall, hill up around the plants with soil, this can be done about every two weeks until flowering has finished. This will stop your potatoes from going green and encourage more potatoes to form.

Pinkeye potatoes can be harvested while still in flower, the other varieties can be harvested when flowering has finished and the plant is dying off. It is best just to remove the potatoes, as you need them as they keep for some time in the ground.

Community has its say on dog management MORE than 600 people have had their say on the future of dog management in Clarence, with strong community interest recorded during the first stage of a review of the city’s Dog Management Policy.

The three-month consultation attracted more than 600 survey responses, 24 written submissions and almost 200 face-to-face conversations with residents.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said residents from across the municipality had taken the opportunity to share their views.

“People from all ages and interest groups got behind our latest engagement, from South Arm to Richmond, Tranmere to Risdon Vale, every corner of

our community had its say on dogs,” he said.

“The results from this engagement, and the breadth of participation, give us a strong base to create a policy that reflects community expectations.

“The message is clear, people value dogs as part of our community but they also expect responsible ownership and respect for the shared spaces we all enjoy.”

Residents were asked about issues including responsible dog ownership, effective control, exercise areas, on-lead requirements, beach access, safety around dogs, nuisance behaviour and enforcement.

Dog waste emerged as one of the major concerns, with a large majority of survey respondents reporting they

had seen discarded dog waste during the previous three months.

Mayor Blomeley said responses around effective control also highlighted the need to balance differing views about how public spaces should be shared.

“The community’s response to our questions about effective control highlights a need for a policy that balances different community perspectives,” he said.

Feedback will now be considered by an independent submissions review panel, which will identify key issues and explore areas where common ground and practical solutions can be found.

“The panel will play an important role in reviewing all

feedback received, identifying key issues and helping to explore areas of common ground, compromise and practical solutions,” Mayor Blomeley said.

“This is about more than just a policy, it’s about building trust through genuine engagement and making sure people can see how their input is shaping outcomes.”

The outcomes of the first round of consultation are expected to be released publicly towards the end of October.

A draft Dog Management Policy will then be released for another round of community consultation before being considered by councillors for adoption in 2027.

Jobs and study galore on Eastern Shore BUSINESS & Employment Southeast Tasmania (BEST) is continuing to connect local residents with employment, training and study opportunities as demand for its services grows across the region.

Established in 2010, BEST works across Clarence, Sorell, Tasman and Glamorgan Spring Bay, providing practical support for job seekers, employers, students and businesses.

The organisation was created by the South East Region Development Association (SERDA), a strategic alliance of the four south-east councils established in 1993, in response to the need to better connect local businesses with people seeking employment.

BEST now provides a range of business, training and employment services, supporting people looking for work, those wanting to develop new skills or change careers, employers seeking local staff and businesses looking for workforce development assistance.

Clarence Mayor and SERDA vice president Brendan Blomeley recently met with BEST Program Leader Andrew Hyatt and Study Hub Manager Jason Massie for an update on the organisation’s activities.

Have your say on Pilchers Hill CLARENCE residents are being invited to help shape the future of one of the city’s largest and most biodiverse bushland areas.

A draft management plan for Pilchers Hill Bushland Reserve, near Geilston Bay, and the nearby Thoona

and Lindhill reserves has been released for community consultation.

The plan will guide management of the reserves over the next 10 years, including how their environmental values can be protected while continuing to

support recreational use.

Pilchers Hill is home to a variety of native wildlife, with endangered Tasmanian devils and critically endangered swift parrots recorded in the reserve. Dusky robins and button quails have

also been reported by birdwatchers.

The reserve is also a popular destination for walkers and mountain bikers, with several tracks and trails running through the area.

Current threats include illegal woodhooking, invasive species and biodiversity loss, including threats to native vegetation.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the bushland was an important part of what made the municipality an attractive place to live.

“Plants and wildlife

live abundantly in the bushland covered hills in Clarence,” he said.

“This land helps make Clarence a unique and appealing place to live.

“It allows our community to get outdoors and enjoy nature close to their homes and offers an affordable and beautiful open space to exercise with friends and family.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure we care for this land, and I encourage all community members to head to Your Say Clarence and complete our quick survey.”

consultation, residents are also encouraged to share photographs and details of wildlife they encounter while visiting the reserves.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to plan a citizen science weekend walk, perhaps on the Pilchers Hill Loop or

Geilston Gully Circuit Track and snap some great photos to share in the community engagement,” Mayor Blomeley said.

FARMERS and rural workers from across Tasmania came together at Wattle Hill on Saturday 1 August for the annual Old Mates day.

Hosted by Terry White at his farm, this year’s gathering marked the 10th anniversary of the popular event, which gives people from rural

communities an opportunity to catch up, unwind and talk about issues affecting them and their families.

Around 150 people attended this year’s event, continuing a tradition that has become an important social occasion for farming and rural families.

Old Mates provides a

welcoming environment for people from remote and regional communities to connect with others while promoting positive mental health and social support.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley attended the event at the invitation of Mr White and praised the role it had played over the past decade.

“This is a wonderful and very important event for those of our rural and farming communities,” Mayor Blomeley said.

“Terry deserves our appreciation for so generously hosting around 150 attendees at a gathering that means so much in terms of social connection and support.”

Rotary celebrates year of service THE Rotary Club of Lindisfarne has celebrated another successful year of community service, fundraising and fellowship at its annual changeover dinner at the Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania.

Club co-president Peter FitzGerald said Tommy Choo Choo and community barbecues remained at the heart of the club’s fundraising efforts, providing opportunities to connect with local families while raising money for Rotary projects.

“We also continued to strengthen our presence within the local community through regular support for the Risdon Vale Neighbourhood Centre, distributing Welcome Packs to new residents, participating in the Anzac Day Dawn Service, supporting the Hobart City Mission Sleep Rough event and donating $1,500 to Be Hers Hub following a successful Whisky Tasting fundraising evening,” he said.

Young people were also supported during the

year through sponsorship of participants in the Windeward Bound sail training program, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program.

The club’s work extended overseas, with contributions to the Rotary Foundation and projects in Ghana, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea.

These included sponsoring a pictorial food guide for Ghana through Food Plant Solutions, purchasing a water tank for a Rotary project in Sri Lanka and providing two bicycles to help Rotary Against Malaria educators travel in Papua New Guinea.

Several members were recognised for their contributions during the changeover dinner.

Mr FitzGerald received a Paul Harris Fellow award for his service to the club and Rotary Tasmania, alongside co-president Liz Luck, who will take on the presidency in her own right for the coming term.

Daniel Hulme received a Paul Harris Fellow for his work running the club’s speaker program over the past two years, which he has committed to continue.

The Avenue of Service Award for Community Service was jointly presented to Neville Wilson and Kathy Hancock for their work with the Operations Team and contribution to the ongoing success of Tommy Choo Choo.

Catherine Nicholson received a Certificate of Appreciation recognising five years of service on the board

and her leadership of the club’s support for Pankind and Hobart City Mission.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley congratulated the club and award recipients.

“The Rotary Club of Lindisfarne continues to serve our community well and I thank all members for their commitment to making this world a better and fairer place for all,” Mayor Blomeley said.

“Congratulations also to the three very worthy Paul Harris Fellow recipients.”

Caretaker policy adopted ahead of elections CLARENCE City Council has adopted its Election Caretaker Period Policy for 2026 ahead of this year’s local government elections.

Endorsed by Council at its 20 July meeting, the policy sets out how Council will operate during the election period to maintain political neutrality while continuing to provide day-to-day services.

The Caretaker Period is expected to begin following the advertising of the notice of election and will conclude when the certificate of election is issued.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the arrangements were designed to protect the integrity of the election process and ensure all candidates were treated equally.

“The Caretaker Policy is about maintaining public confidence in local government and ensuring every candidate has an equal opportunity during the election period,” he said.

“It creates a level playing field for both current Councillors seeking re-election and anyone putting their hand up to represent our community.”

While the policy places restrictions on some

Council decisions and communications, Mayor Blomeley said regular Council operations would continue.

“Residents can be assured that day-to-day operations won’t stop,” he said.

“Our teams will continue delivering services, maintaining infrastructure, responding to customer requests and progressing projects that have already been approved.

“What does change is the way Council makes significant decisions and communicates during the Caretaker Period.

“These measures are in place to ensure City of Clarence resources are never used to provide an electoral advantage to any individual candidate.”

During the Caretaker Period, councillors will not make major policy decisions or enter significant contracts that could bind an incoming Council, except where permitted under the policy or required by legislation.

Council’s communication channels will continue to provide information about services, emergencies and operational matters but will not be used to promote councillors or election campaigns.

Census night was Tuesday 11 August.

Toy library plans gather momentum

Hobart Legacy calls on a new generation of volunteers HOBART Legacy is calling on a new generation of Tasmanians to help continue more than 100 years of supporting the families of veterans.

With more than half of Hobart Legacy’s volunteers now aged over 75, the organisation is encouraging people of all ages, particularly younger members of the community to step forward and help ensure its vital work continues well into the future.

Hobart Legacy currently supports around 400 beneficiaries across Southern Tasmania, including widows, widowers, children and families of

veterans, providing practical assistance, social connection and advocacy following the injury or death of a loved one through military service.

Hobart Legacy President David Waddle OAM said while the organisation’s mission had remained unchanged for more than a century, its future depended on attracting new volunteers.

“Our volunteers have dedicated countless hours to supporting veterans’ families, but many of them are now reaching an age where it’s becoming harder to continue,” he said.

“We’re looking for people who want to make a genuine difference in their

community.

“You don’t need a military background, just compassion, a willingness to help and a little of your time.”

Mr Waddle said volunteers played an important role in helping Legacy fulfil the promise made more than a century ago to care for the families of those who served.

“Legacy was built on the simple promise to look after the families left behind. That promise is just as important today as it was in 1923,” he said.

“Whether it’s visiting a beneficiary, helping with fundraising, making phone

calls or lending a hand at community events, every volunteer helps ensure veterans’ families continue receiving the support they deserve.”

Hobart Legacy offers two volunteer pathways.

Legatees work directly with beneficiaries, while Friends of Hobart Legacy support fundraising activities and community events.

PL ANS to expand toy library services across Clarence are gaining momentum, with local families, community organisations and volunteers being encouraged to get involved.

Clarence Deputy Mayor Allison Ritchie recently met with Toy Libraries Australia Growth and support lead and Inclusion support officer Adelle Suitor and local proponent Helena Gillham to discuss opportunities to establish and expand services across the municipality.

“A Toy Library would be a wonderful addition to our community, providing local families with affordable access to a diverse range of quality educational toys while encouraging sustainability, early childhood development and stronger community connections,” Ms Ritchie said.

“It was inspiring to hear firsthand about the positive impact Toy Libraries

are having in communities across Australia and to explore how similar services could benefit families here in Clarence.

“Toy libraries allow families to borrow toys in much the same way as books from a traditional library, helping reduce household costs and waste while giving children access to a greater variety of educational and developmental play experiences.

Ms Ritchie said it was fantastic to see community organisations investing in initiatives that supported local families and strengthen community connections “The Salvation Army’s work demonstrates the strong community interest in Toy Library services, and I look forward to exploring opportunities to work collaboratively and encourage the development of multiple Toy Library services across Clarence so more

families can benefit,” Ms Ritchie said “There is clearly strong momentum building across Clarence, and by working collaboratively with community organisations, volunteers and local families, we can help ensure Toy Library services are accessible to more families across our municipality.

“This is an exciting opportunity to create lasting community assets that support children, encourage learning through play and bring people together.”

Local auto business drives growth

A LOCALLY owned automotive business is continuing to grow on the Eastern Shore, creating local jobs while helping motorists stay safe on the road.

Mama Autos, founded

by Biraj Giri, has grown from a small operation into a business spanning two locations in Howrah and Glenorchy since opening in 2024.

The business now employs 12 local staff and provides a range of automotive services including vehicle servicing and repairs, advanced diagnostics, inspections, detailing and

car rentals.

Clarence Deputy Mayor Allison Ritchie recently visited the Howrah workshop, meeting Mr Giri and the Mama Autos team and receiving a hands-on tour of the operation.

“It was fantastic to meet Biraj, Sultan and the entire Mama Autos team and see firsthand the pride they take in their work,” Ms Ritchie said.

“Their growth across two locations and the creation of 12 local jobs since opening in 2024 is a great example of how small businesses are driving economic activity

and employment in Clarence and the broader region.”

“With colder winter conditions placing additional strain on vehicles, Mama Autos is also offering free battery, tyre pressure and safety checks to local motorists.

“With colder weather placing extra strain on vehicles, these free checks are a practical way Mama Autos is supporting safer driving across our community.

Ms Ritchie said the

CatholicCare marks milestone on reconciliation journey CATHOLICCARE Tasmania has launched its first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), celebrating two years of work to strengthen relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities before formally unveiling the plan.

Principal aboriginal consultant Alarna Page said the organisation had deliberately taken a different approach, focusing on meaningful action before announcing its commitments.

“The launch of our Reconciliation Action Plan is an important milestone of our reconciliation journey,” she said.

“For us at CatholicCare Tasmania, the RAP is not the beginning of our work, it’s the recognition of the work that we’ve already achieved.

“It’s the relationships that we’ve already

started to develop and the learning that has already taken place.”

Over the past two years, CatholicCare has invested in cultural learning, strengthened relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations, reviewed policies and embedded cultural safety throughout the organisation.

Ms Page said the launch was both a celebration of what had been achieved and a commitment to continuing the journey.

“As an organisation we are really committed to listening, to truth telling, acknowledging our past and working together in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations,” she said.

The launch event brought together staff, partner organisations, community members and Aboriginal organisations. It began

with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony before the official unveiling of the Reconciliation Action Plan.

A highlight of the event was the unveiling of a commissioned artwork by Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Reuben Oates, created to reflect CatholicCare’s reconciliation journey and aspirations for the future.

Mr Oates said the artwork, painted using acrylic on fine Italian linen, took around two to three weeks to complete from planning through to the finished piece.

“Because this was such a privilege to do and such an important piece,” he said.

“The reception’s been amazing, there’s been nothing but incredible and positive words of support.”

Clarence leads state in new dwelling approvals CLARENCE recorded more dwelling approvals than any other Tasmanian local government area in the 12 months to June 2026, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures.

The data showed 291 dwellings were approved across Clarence during the period, 74 more than the next-highest local government area.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the figures reflected the city’s continued growth and appeal as a place to live, invest and raise a family.

“Clarence offers an enviable combination of established neighbourhoods, growing communities, employment opportunities, natural areas and strong connections to other cities and the airport,” he said.

“These figures reinforce what we already know: Clarence is growing, and we must continue planning carefully so that growth strengthens our city and maintains the lifestyle our community values.”

Mayor Blomeley said the

city currently had enough residentially zoned land to accommodate growth at its present rate for another seven years.

“Much of that land is privately owned, so it is ultimately a matter of when private owners choose to develop it and make residential lots available for sale,” he said.

“For the 12 months to June 2026, we also received 220 building applications lodged for new dwellings, which tells us our growth rate is likely to remain steady in the near future.”

Recent residential growth has been particularly evident in Rokeby, Risdon Vale and parts of Howrah, bringing increased demand for infrastructure, services and community facilities.

Mayor Blomeley said careful planning and investment would be needed to ensure infrastructure kept pace with the growing population.

“Council’s role is to plan responsibly for growth and ensure our roads, footpaths, stormwater systems, open

spaces, community facilities and services can respond to increasing demand,” he said.

“We are also here to advocate for the needs of our growing communities. We already know, for example, that Clarence needs more community sporting facilities.

“We have projects such as the Bayview Sports Precinct ready to go, but projects of this scale need support from all levels of government, they are not something Council can deliver alone.”

The City of Clarence’s 2026-27 Budget includes a capital works program of more than $32 million, including almost $15 million for the transport network, $3.2 million for stormwater infrastructure and more than $2 million for sporting facilities.

“Growth brings opportunities, but it must be well planned and supported by coordinated investment from all levels of government so that new and existing residents continue to enjoy a connected, liveable and sustainable city,” Mayor Blomeley said.

COMMUNITY members have toured the recently developed 7 Mile

Beach Golf Course to see how public access is being maintained through the site.

7 Mile Golf founder Mathew Goggin hosted six members of the City of Clarence’s Tracks and Trails Working Group and four members of the Seven Mile Beach Coastcare Group for a tour of the course.

The site was previously a pine plantation forest and was popular with local horse riders before its

redevelopment as a golf course.

7 Mile Golf general manager commercial Will Kay said maintaining community access had been an important part of the development.

“It has been great to make this part of Clarence usable for more people more of the time,” he said.

“We will continue to liaise with the Council to keep making it better into the future.”

Members of the Tracks and Trails Working Group also used the visit to explore how walking tracks through the golf course could connect with Clarence’s wider trail network.

The tour provided an opportunity for community representatives to see the site firsthand and discuss how recreational access could continue alongside the golf course’s operation.

Now is the time to prepare for Tasmania’s Spring selling season IT might seem strange to talk about spring while we are still pulling on coats and scraping frost off windscreens, but if you are thinking about selling your home this year, the middle of winter is exactly the right moment to start preparing.

The vendors who achieve the strongest results in September, October and November are almost always the ones who began their homework in July and August.

The spring and summer selling season remains the busiest period on the Tasmanian property calendar and this year it arrives against a backdrop of genuine market strength.

The Institute’s March quarter figures recorded 2,990 transactions worth $1.925 billion across the state, with record medians for both houses at $676,250 and units at $550,000.

Investor numbers reached their highest level since 2003 and mainland buyers more than doubled year on year.

Buyers are active, they are motivated and many of them are looking at Tasmania from interstate with fresh eyes.

That level of demand is good news for sellers, but it does not mean preparation can be skipped.

If anything, a busy market raises the bar.

When buyers have choice, presentation and pricing decide which homes attract competition and which

ones sit.

So here is my advice, drawn from decades of collective experience across our member agencies on how to get ready.

Start with the honest walk through.

Before you call an agent, walk through your home as a stranger would.

Note the sticking door, the cracked tile, the garden bed that got away from you over winter.

Small maintenance jobs are cheap to fix now and expensive to ignore later, because buyers mentally deduct far more than the repair cost when they spot a defect.

A weekend with a paintbrush and a skip bin is often the best investment a vendor makes all year.

Let the light in.

Tasmanian homes are

judged on warmth and light more than almost anything else.

Clean the windows, trim back anything blocking them, and make sure heating is serviced and working for those early spring open homes when a cold house can undo everything else you have done.

By the time summer inspections roll around, outdoor areas take over as the hero, so give decks, lawns and entertaining spaces attention now while trades and landscapers still have availability.

Choose your agent on substance, not promises.

Interview more than one.

Ask for recent, comparable sales evidence, not just an appealing appraisal figure. A responsible agent will show you the

data behind their price guidance and explain their marketing strategy in plain terms.

Any REIT member agency is bound by our standards of professional conduct, and I encourage vendors to look for that membership.

It exists to protect you.

Price for the market you are in, not the one you wish for.

Strong conditions tempt some vendors to test the ceiling.

The evidence is consistent: homes priced accurately from day one attract more inspections, more competition andbetter final results than homes that launch high and drift down.

Buyers in 2026 are informed.

They research comparable sales before they ever step through

your door, and an overpriced listing simply helps sell the correctly priced home down the street.

Think about timing, but do not obsess over it.

Yes, gardens look their best in October and November and yes, buyer activity lifts with the temperature.

But the best time to sell is when your property is genuinely ready and your circumstances suit.

A well prepared home in August will outperform a rushed one in November every time.

Finally, a word on the bigger picture.

A healthy selling season depends on supply and I will keep saying it in every forum available to me, building enough homes is the only honest measure of any housing policy.

Real estate assessments for Services Australia can often be misunderstood as it’s assessed differently depending on the payment you’re getting.

It’s important to remember that in most cases the principal home doesn’t affect your rate of payment.

When we look at assessable income from real estate, Services

Australia does not recognise negative gearing, the tax arrangement where you can offset investment losses against other sources of taxable income.

If a property is making a loss, the assessable income from the property is $0.

If the payment or concession is based on your adjusted taxable income, like Family Tax Benefit, then you will need to add any net rental property losses to your taxable income as part of the claim.

For most other payments,

Services Australia will look at both the assessable asset and assessable income from real estate.

The value of the asset is the market value.

We assess the value at the time of application and then automatically revalue the property on the anniversary of your claim based on the movement of property prices.

Services Australia can offset the value of real estate with any loans secured against that property.

So if you have an investment property with a loan solely or jointly secured against the investment property, then we are able to reduce the market value by the proportion of the loan held against the property.

If the mortgage used to by the real estate was secured against the family home, then none of it can be used to offset the value of the real estate.

Time shares arrangements Time share arrangements

are a form of property ownership where you have a right to use a particular property or properties for your holidays.

They are not treated the same as standard real estate.

Services Australia assesses time share arrangements like a managed investment in that the income from the time share is deemed under our deeming rates.

This means that there will be an assessable income under our deeming

rules, whether you earn more or less than those amounts from the time share arrangement.

We assess the asset value of a time share as the purchase price.

That can be changed if you can provide evidence from recent sales that shows the value has fallen.

If there are any changes to your real estate or timeshare arrangements, you should let us know within 14 days.

Hot August Jazz Festival 2026 IT is the 22nd annual Hot August Jazz Festival on Sunday 30th August in North Hobart from noon till midnight.

Hobart Jazz Club members performing in North Hobart

has been a major supporter of the event since 2007.

More than 60 bands with roughly 200 musicians performing in 10 venues all within easy walking distance. This year’s venues run along Elizabeth Street and up Burnett Street in the North Hobart CBD. The event has proven to be a favourite of the musicians as they get to see other musicians perform as well as be a performer themselves and of course the punters love the chance to see so many of their favourite bands/ musicians for free while enjoying some of Tassie’s best beverages and cuisine.

The festival promises to deliver something for all jazz tastes with jazz genres from traditional and mainstream through to blues, funk and modern.

This is a FREE event, there is no cover charge but we encourage patrons to support the businesses by purchasing food and drink where available.

The event opens at noon at the Queens Head, The Crescent Hotel and Raincheck Lounge seeing many other venues open up as the day progresses and wraps up at the Queens Head at midnight.

soloists through to BIG bands playing in venues throughout the day.

What happens to my super upon death?

Damian Gibson, Partner and Financial Adviser, Elevate Wealth WITH approximately $3.5 trillion held in superannuation assets it is easy to understand that for

most Australians, their super is generally their second biggest asset behind their family home.

Therefore, it is important your super goes where you want it to when you pass away.

Unlike the family home, you can nominate beneficiaries to receive your super (including any life insurance) when you

pass away.

Consequently, determining who gets your super upon death isn’t as straightforward as just having a Will in place.

In most cases, you can make a death benefit nomination on your super or pension account.

Your beneficiary nomination provides your super provider with instructions as

to who you would like to receive your super balance upon death.

However, there are restrictions as to who you can nominate. Under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993 (SIS), you can nominate your super be paid to one or more of your dependants or your legal personal representative (your estate).

A dependant can be a spouse, a child (of any age) or interdependent.

It is also important to note that there are different tax consequences for different dependants and also how they can receive the benefit, i.e. lump sum or pension.

The validity of your nomination will only be assessed by your super fund when the death benefit is payable.

Therefore, it makes it very important that your nomination has been completed correctly and is valid at the time of making it.

There are different types of nominations you can use to nominate your preferred beneficiary.

Binding Nominations If you make a binding nomination your super fund (the trustee) is legally required to pay your super benefit to your listed beneficiary given they are an eligible beneficiary.

The super benefit will be paid as cash to an eligible beneficiary.

A binding nomination can provide a greater level of certainty and peace of mind that your super will end up where you want it.

Binding nominations can be either lapsing or non-lapsing.

Lapsing nominations are generally only valid for three years and then need to be re-submitted.

This can pose some risk if a nomination lapses and you are not aware or you forget to resubmit a new nomination.

On the other hand, non-lapsing nomination are in

place for life or until cancelled or updated.

Non-binding Nominations If you make a nonbinding nomination the trustee is not legally required to follow your instructions. The trustee will use your non-binding nomination as a guide only.

This means that the trustee has full discretion to pay your death benefit to somebody else, such as your estate or another eligible beneficiary.

Similarly above, the super benefit will be paid as cash to an eligible beneficiary.

Reversionary Nominations A reversionary nomination can only be made on an account based pension income stream.

If you make a reversionary nomination (generally in favour of your spouse) your spouse or eligible beneficiary will take ownership of your account based pension and will continue to receive

regular income from this product upon your death.

Seek Advice It’s important you understand the options available for your super when you pass away and what you can do to ensure it is paid according to your wishes.

Antarctica comes alive on Hobart waterfront this August

THE Australian Antarctic Festival will return to Hobart’s waterfront from 20–23 August 2026, celebrating Australia’s unique connection to Antarctica through science, exploration, heritage and familyfriendly experiences.

Hosted by the Mawson’s Huts Foundation, the free four-day festival will feature Antarctic technology and equipment, educational activities, live talks, virtual reality experiences and opportunities to engage directly with the people behind Australia’s

Antarctic program.

Mawson’s Hut Foundation chief executive officer Lara Colrain said the festival continued to grow alongside Hobart’s international reputation as an Antarctic Gateway city.

“Many people are curious about what happens when Antarctic expeditioners disappear over the southern horizon each summer,” she said.

“The Australian Antarctic Festival gives the public the opportunity to step inside that world and experience the stories,

science and heritage that connect Tasmania so closely to Antarctica.

“From the heroic era of Douglas Mawson through to modern Antarctic science and climate research, the festival celebrates the people and organisations shaping Australia’s ongoing presence in Antarctica.”

Ms Colrain said the festival also highlighted Hobart’s globally significant role within the Antarctic sector.

“Hobart is one of only five internationally recognised Antarctic Gateway cities and is home to one of the

world’s leading Antarctic research and logistics networks,” she said.

“The festival is an opportunity to celebrate that connection with both the local community and visitors from interstate and overseas.”

The 2026 Australian Antarctic Festival will be held across Hobart’s waterfront precinct and selected partner venues from 20 to 23 August.

New arrivals area opens as airport Clarence upgrade reaches major milestone landmarks

PASSENGERS travelling through Hobart Airport will now experience a new arrivals area featuring a large U-belt baggage carousel and a Tasmanian-designed outdoor forecourt.

Hobart Airport Chief executive officer Norris Carter said the opening of the area marked a significant milestone in the $200-million terminal expansion project, which was now around two-thirds complete.

Over the coming months, travellers will

continue to see new areas open as work progresses toward a terminal that is double its previous size.

“The project will ultimately double the size of the terminal, providing more space, more choice of food and retail, and more jobs for Tasmanians,” Mr Carter said.

“The opening of our new arrivals area is an exciting moment for Tasmania as the terminal expands to meet growing demand.

“It features more

baggage claim space, a new arrivals exit with easier access to the new car rental offices, and a welcoming outdoor forecourt inspired by Tasmania’s unique landscape.

“As part of the works, one existing baggage carousel has been taken offline to be upgraded and expanded, while the new 85 metre U-belt carousel is designed to improve flow and support increased passenger numbers.”

Mr Carter said the

expanded arrivals area added roughly 800 square metres of space, providing additional capacity to support growing passenger numbers.

The outdoor forecourt has been designed by Tasmanian landscape architects Playstreet and draws inspiration from Tasmania’s natural environment to create a distinctly local welcome for visitors arriving in the state.

MORE than 100 guests gathered at Wrest Point in early August for the Clarence Football Club’s annual Red and White Ball.

Club president Nat Belbin said the event was a highlight of the club’s calendar and an opportunity to bring the wider Clarence football community together.

“This is one of our favourite events on the club calendar and provides a wonderful opportunity to bring together our players, coaches, sponsors, volunteers, families and supporters to celebrate the season away from

the football field,” she said.

Senior Men’s coach Grant Fagan had even more reason to celebrate after coaching Clarence to victory in a close match against Eastern Shore rivals Lauderdale earlier in the day.

“It’s always fantastic for the whole Clarence Football community to come together and reflect on the year and enjoy great company,” Mr Fagan said.

“Like all successful clubs, the strength of our club is our people and our support for each other.

“We have a proud history and with the high calibre of our young sportsmen and sportswomen coming through the grades, we are well positioned into the future and that’s a legacy of which we can all be proud.”

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley also attended the event and said the ball capped off a memorable day for the club.

“On the back of what was a thrilling game against Lauderdale earlier in the day, it was great to spend time with the wider club community,” Mayor

Blomeley said.

“Today’s game was the annual SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY match which is always an important day for both Clarence and Lauderdale.

The Lauderdale Football Club also used the occasion to support Grant Whelan, the grandfather of several Lauderdale players, who was recently the victim of a violent robbery and arson attack.

A fundraising raffle for Mr Whelan was generously supported by local businesses and people attending the match.

CLARENCE Deputy Mayor Allison Ritchie has been appointed the new patron of the Rosny Park Tennis Club, recognising her longstanding involvement with community sport and volunteer organisations.

The appointment was marked with the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation by club copresidents Kevin Jones and Graeme Bird.

Ms Ritchie said she was honoured to take on the role and support one of the Eastern Shore’s established sporting clubs.

“It is a privilege to be appointed Patron of such a respected and community-focused club,” she said.

“Rosny Park Tennis Club has built a wonderful reputation as a welcoming and inclusive place where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy sport, build friendships and become part of a supportive community.

“Community sporting clubs are the backbone

of our local community.

They rely on dedicated volunteers who give countless hours to provide opportunities for others, and they create places where people can stay active, develop lifelong skills and feel connected.”

Ms Ritchie said her previous experience working with sporting organisations and community groups had given her an appreciation of both the challenges clubs face and their contribution to local communities.

“I look forward to supporting the committee, members and volunteers as Patron and helping celebrate the important work they do,” she said.

Club co-president Kevin Jones said Rosny Park Tennis Club was delighted to welcome Ms Ritchie to the role.

“Allison has demonstrated a genuine commitment to supporting community organisations throughout her career and has a strong appreciation

Alongside serving as Clarence Deputy Mayor, Ms Ritchie is general manager of the Hobart Police and Community Youth Club and previously spent seven years as president of a state sporting association.

Another top season for champion club THE Clifton Beach Surf Life Saving Club has celebrated another successful season, recognising the achievements of its members both on and off the beach at its recent Annual General Meeting.

Club president Matt Clingeleffer said there had been highlights across all areas of the club throughout the year.

“A big thank you to our members who assisted in our lifesaving department to support our patrol teams and continue to build our members’ skills and awards for the future,” he said.

The club operated eight patrol teams throughout the season, supported by a reserve team of 12 members and a 15-member Emergency Response Team.

More than 100 members contributed a combined 2,804.75 patrol hours, responding to 28 first aid incidents and carrying out 40 preventative actions, as well as assisting with rescues outside regular patrol hours.

Mr Clingeleffer said the club’s membership had grown to more than 450, with its Nippers program continuing to thrive.

“With more than 450 members, it is pleasing to see our Nippers program continuing to thrive thanks to the terrific work of our coordinators and the great support from parents and members in the program,” he said.

“I would also like to acknowledge our athletes who competed with great pride and respect when representing the club at statewide carnivals and interstate competition.”

The club enjoyed another successful year in competition, taking out both the Junior and Senior State Titles.

“The ‘team first’ approach with surf sports at Clifton Beach SLSC is unique and also applies to all areas at our club,” Mr Clingeleffer said.

“The success of winning the Junior and Senior State Titles was a reflection of this approach and hard work from our teams, and was a sensational achievement for the club.”

Another major milestone was the confirmation that the club’s long-awaited clubhouse redevelopment can proceed, supported by a $980,000 Federal Government grant and an additional $550,000 from
