NEW CHAPTER FOR EDUCATION AND SKILLS ACROSS CHESHIRE
AS CHESHIRE COLLEGE – SOUTH & WEST AND MACCLESFIELD COLLEGE OFFICIALLY MERGE This summer marked a major milestone for education and skills across Cheshire as Cheshire College – South & West and Macclesfield College formally become one organisation following the successful completion of their legal merger.
The newly merged College now serves more than 15,000 students each year, including over 6,000 young people, around 1,500 apprentices and thousands of adult students. Supported by approximately 900 staff, with an annual income of almost £80 million and covering a geographical area of 750sq miles, making it one of the largest further education colleges in England. The strengthened organisation will play a leading role in developing the skilled workforce needed to support economic growth across the region and beyond. The merger follows a successful public consultation and an extensive period of planning and due diligence. It reflects a shared commitment to expanding opportunities for students, responding to the evolving needs of employers and creating a financially strong, resilient and sustainable college for the future. Operating under the banner of Stronger Together, the new organisation brings together the expertise and heritage of both colleges. By combining specialist curriculum expertise, established employer partnerships and strong industry links, the College is well placed to deliver the skills, training and innovation needed to support students, businesses and local communities. Working in partnership with more than 1,500 employers across local, regional and national networks, the College will play an even greater role in developing the talent pipeline, addressing skills gaps and supporting economic growth. →

Lesley Davies, Chair of Corporation, said: “ Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our colleges and the communities we serve. This merger is the result of many months of careful planning, rigorous due diligence and meaningful consultation, all with one clear objective: creating the best possible future for our students, staff and employers. By bringing together the expertise, resources and ambitions of Cheshire College – South & West and Macclesfield College, we have created an organisation that is better
equipped to respond to evolving skills needs while continuing to deliver exceptional education and training across Cheshire.” Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and Chief Executive, said: “ Both colleges have proud histories, strong reputations and a deep commitment to serving their communities. By bringing our organisations together, we are building on those strengths to create even greater opportunities for students, apprentices, employers and our wider communities.” “ This merger enables us to broaden our curriculum, strengthen our partnerships with employers and continue investing in the facilities,

Building on the proud histories of both colleges, the new organisation begins this exciting chapter with a shared ambition to deliver outstanding education, support economic growth and create lifechanging opportunities for students, employers and communities across Cheshire for years to come.
FUNDRAISING EVENTS SUPPORT
MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT
Students have raised funds for Macmillan Cancer Support through two fundraising events organised as part of their studies. Students from Whites Chef Academy at Macclesfield College held a bake sale, raising £175 for the charity through the sale of their homemade treats. At the Ellesmere Port Campus, Learning for Life and Work students also organised a coffee morning to raise awareness of Macmillan Cancer Support and the support it provides to people living with cancer and their families. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College – South & West and Macclesfield College, said: “ It’s fantastic to see students coming together to support such an important cause.
These activities show how students can make a positive difference in their communities while developing confidence, working together and gaining valuable experience beyond their studies.” The events gave students the opportunity to put their skills into practice while supporting a charity that provides practical, emotional and financial support to people affected by cancer. Through initiatives like these, students at Cheshire College – South & West and Macclesfield College can get involved in their communities, support worthwhile causes and make a difference beyond the classroom.

SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION
EARNS CHESHIRE COLLEGE EDUCATE AWARDS RECOGNITION The College has been shortlisted for the Educate Awards 2026 in recognition of its commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.
10
OCTOBER 2026
The College has been named a finalist in the Outstanding Commitment to the Environment & Sustainability category, recognising the work underway to support more sustainable practices and give students opportunities to develop their own environmental awareness and skills. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO, said: “ Being shortlisted for this award is a fantastic recognition of the work taking place to make sustainability part of what we do. We’re proud of the practical opportunities we give our students to
explore environmental issues, develop sustainable skills and make a positive contribution to their communities.” A key part of this work is the College’s ongoing partnership with Chester Zoo, which has given students opportunities to explore conservation and sustainability through practical projects. The partnership led to the creation of a Wellbeing Garden at the Ellesmere Port Campus, transforming an unused outdoor space into a green area for students and staff. Entry Level students worked with Chester Zoo throughout the year, exploring nature, sustainability and wellbeing before developing and creating the garden themselves. The partnership has continued through an Environmental Leadership Course, giving students on the College’s Learning for Life and Work programme the opportunity to learn about local habitats and conservation. Students have taken part in outdoor activities at locations including Red Rocks Sands
in West Kirby, while also developing communication, teamwork, planning and problem-solving skills. Alongside its work with Chester Zoo, the College is also investing in sustainable facilities and infrastructure. Its Sustainable House at the Ellesmere Port Campus gives construction, electrical and other trades students hands-on experience with technologies including smart meters and ground source heat pumps, while its multicampus decarbonisation programme is helping to reduce energy use and carbon emissions. The College’s sustainability work also extends to industry-focused learning, including opportunities for students to develop skills in areas such as electric vehicle technology and sustainable construction. The Educate Awards 2026 will take place at Liverpool Cathedral on Friday 13 November, bringing together schools, colleges and education professionals from across the region.

OCTOBER 2026
The fairs, held in Crewe, Ellesmere Port, Chester, and Macclesfield, brought together thousands of students and more than 50 organisations, giving students the opportunity to meet local groups, discover support services and find out how they can get involved beyond the classroom. Organisations attending this year included The Bren Project, Samaritans, Barclays, Her-Place and more, with representatives on hand to speak to students about everything from volunteering and community opportunities to wellbeing, careers and other services available locally. The events also provided a platform for the College’s Student Senate, which encouraged new students to have their say and get involved in shaping the student experience. Freshers’ Fairs form part of the College’s wider programme of activities designed to help students settle into College life and make the most of the opportunities available to them throughout the academic year. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College – South & West and Macclesfield College, said: “ Starting College is about much more than your course. It is about meeting new people, finding your feet and making the most of the opportunities around you. Our Freshers’ Fairs give students a great introduction to what College life has to offer beyond the classroom, and it has been lovely to see so many students getting involved across all four campuses.” The Freshers’ Fairs are part of the College’s wider programme of student activities taking place throughout the academic year. Students will have further opportunities to get involved in volunteering, student voice, events and enrichment activities across the four campuses.

OCTOBER 2026
Around 20 second-year students from graphic design and business are working on a brief focused on encouraging greener travel to the new hospital, with their work being developed alongside Liverpool-based creative agency Darkhorse & Co and Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The project forms part of the Healthier Futures programme, which would sit at the heart of a proposed health and care neighbourhood in Crewe. Graphic design students have been asked to create a visual identity for a Greener Travel Initiative, focusing on ways to encourage walking, cycling, public transport, car sharing and electric vehicle use. Business students will then use the designs to develop a marketing campaign encouraging people to consider more sustainable ways of travelling to the future hospital. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO at Cheshire College –
South & West and Macclesfield College said: “ It’s fantastic to see our students working on a brief with such a clear connection to the local community. The future Leighton Hospital is a major development for the area, so this gives our students a really valuable insight into how their skills could be used to tackle real challenges.” “Bringing graphic design and business students together also gives them the opportunity to see how different areas of expertise can work alongside each other to develop an idea from the initial concept through to a campaign.” Paul Kelly, Design Director at Darkhorse & Co, recently visited the College to launch the brief and share their industry expertise with students. James Whittall, Sustainability, Energy and Social Value Lead at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, also

shared insight into the sustainability priorities for the future hospital. Paul commented: “ We are delighted to support the college students with the opportunity to work on a creative brief. For us, it is a great way to share our industry experience while demonstrating how creativity can deliver social value and help make a positive difference in our communities.” The project is one of a number of opportunities being developed through the Colleges’s relationship with the team behind the Leighton Hospital rebuild, giving students the chance to work with external organisations and apply their skills to projects with purpose. By bringing graphic design and business students together, the project also reflects the collaborative nature of creative industry work, with students seeing how design and marketing can work together to develop an idea from an initial concept through to a campaign.
