FROM WORKSHOP TO RACE TRACK: ISAAC’S JOURNEY

INTO MOTORSPORT ENGINEERING

After completing a Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (IMI) at Cheshire College – South & West, Isaac Wood has turned his passion for vehicles into a clear pathway toward a career in motorsport engineering.

His time at College built strong foundations in technical skills that are essential for success in the automotive and motorsport industries.

Below, Isaac shares his experience in his own words and reflects on how College shaped his journey into degree-level motorsport.

Building Skills in the Workshop

One of the biggest strengths of the Motor Vehicle course for me was its practical, project-based approach. Working in teams to strip down vehicles, diagnose faults, and repair inoperative cars wasn’t just about developing technical skills, it was about learning how to work effectively with others under pressure.

Through these projects, we naturally stepped into leadership roles, improved our communication, and built professional relationships that genuinely reflect real-world automotive and motorsport environments.

Support

That Helped Shape My Direction

Tutorial sessions, especially during my Level 3 year, played a big part in shaping my future plans. With the support of my PDTs and the Careers team, my academic goals became much clearer and more achievable.

The one-to-one sessions really stood out. They felt like a space where I was genuinely listened to, and where issues were acted on quickly.

Stepping

into the World of Motorsport

I’m now in my first year of a BSc (Hons) in Competition Car Technology at Myerscough College & University Centre, which is now allowing me to move within the Motorsport world, taking me into a more technical role.

Degree-level study has already opened doors to real motorsport experiences, including attending events such as the Neil Howard Stages at Oulton Park. There, we worked as a team supporting and maintaining two Mk.2 new-build Escort rally cars, each valued at around £200,000.

Myerscough also has strong industry links, creating exciting future prospects within major motorsport series such as Formula 1, WRC, and WEC. Partnerships with organisations like M-Sport, who take on a small number of students each year in an apprenticeship-style training role, really show how connected the course is to the industry.

Skills That Carry Forward

The course gave me strong industry skills, which are vital in any trade. Progressing onto degree-level motorsport has been much easier because of what I learned at College.

The knowledge I gained has allowed me to apply for and secure interviews in garages, which helps increase my earning potential while I’m at university.

Support from other departments, like Maths, also played a big role. Retaking GCSEs and achieving higher grades first time helped me stay on track academically and move forward with confidence

Advice for Future Students

My advice would be to make the most of everything on offer.

Use open evenings to explore your options and speak to different departments. Cheshire College has modern facilities, knowledgeable staff, and loads of opportunities if you’re willing to put yourself out there. Take extra courses, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to engage.

The Motor Vehicle department, PDTs, and Careers team all work together to help you find the right direction.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE TO STRENGTHEN YOUTH VIOLENCE PREVENTION WORK ACROSS CHESHIRE WEST

Cheshire College – South & West is stepping up its work to tackle youth violence, partnering with the Youth Service to bring a new prevention programme to Chester Campus following the success of a pilot project in Ellesmere Port.

The programme will expand across the region and aims to educate and empower students on knife crime,

exploitation, substance misuse, bullying, gang culture and peer pressure.

While the full initiative is due to launch in the coming months, the first step has already been taken. Staff at Chester Campus are now fully prepared to respond to medical emergencies thanks to the donation and update of the College’s Bleed Kits by the Youth Service team.

Once fully underway, students will benefit from anti-knife crime presentations delivered by the JJ Effect, StreetDoctors first aid training, and on-campus support sessions offering practical guidance and strategies to help young people make safer choices.

Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO at Cheshire College, said:

“ This programme is a crucial part of our commitment to student safety, wellbeing, and personal development. By equipping students with knowledge, practical skills, and opportunities to reflect on real-life situations, we are empowering them to make safer choices and positively influence their communities.”

Joanne Stewart, Participation and Learning Resources Manager at Cheshire College, added:

“ It was fantastic to welcome Leanne and Katrina to Chester Campus and see the Bleed Kits updated and ready for use. Their donation is a huge help for our staff, and it’s exciting to think of this as just the first step in a programme that will give students practical, life-saving skills while raising awareness about knife crime and safety.”

Cheshire College remains committed to providing students with the knowledge, guidance, and tools they need to thrive safely both on and off campus. The youth violence prevention project represents a significant step in the College’s broader strategy to promote student wellbeing and community engagement.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE THE ONLY UK COLLEGE TO SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL STUFFED CABBAGE CHAMPIONSHIP

Eleven students from Cheshire College –South & West represented the UK at the prestigious Championnat Du Monde Du Chou Farci (Stuffed Cabbage Competition) in London on Monday 19th January 2026.

The College was the only UK institution invited to support competitors as Commis Chefs, giving

students a rare opportunity to work alongside top international chefs.

Organised by Bernardaud and the Stuffed Cabbage Association, the competition celebrates the art of stuffed cabbage, a traditional French dish, and showcases the skill and creativity of chefs and charcutiers from around the world. Cheshire College

students assisted in the high-pressure kitchen environment, gaining handson experience and insight into the standards expected at an international culinary event.

Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO at Cheshire College, said:

“ We are incredibly proud that our students were selected to support in this world-class competition. It’s an invaluable experience, allowing them to apply their skills at the highest level, work as part of a professional team, and witness international culinary standards firsthand.”

Level 3 Professional Cookery student Sebastian Shaw commented on his experience:

“ The opportunity to support the competition was amazing, it was a great learning aspect for us as well. I am grateful for the opportunity, and I know my colleagues got a lot out of doing this too. Without the support of our tutors, we would not have be able to take part in these types of events. It was also nice that we all received chef jackets, aprons and hats for taking part.”

The experience demonstrates Cheshire College’s commitment to giving students opportunities beyond the classroom. Being the only UK college invited underscores the high level of training the students receive and provides them with practical, realworld experience that will help launch their careers in professional kitchens both nationally and internationally.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENTS HELP SHAPE SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL PLANS FOR LEIGHTON HOSPITAL

Students from Cheshire College –South & West have been working alongside leading construction, design and healthcare professionals to explore how sustainable travel can shape the future of Leighton Hospital.

Eleven T Level Design, Surveying and Planning students took part in an industry-led Active Travel in Hospital Design workshop, gaining

insight into how hospitals can be designed to support safe, practical and environmentally responsible travel for staff, patients and visitors.

The project brought together a range of industry partners involved in the Leighton Hospital redevelopment, including professionals from Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust CBRE, Arcadis, T&T, Akerlof,

Gleeds and Ryder Architecture, offering perspectives across architecture, surveying, project management and healthcare planning.

Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, commented on the collaboration: “ This experience allowed our students to see how construction, sustainability and healthcare design

come together in practice, while building the skills they need for their future careers. Working on a project connected to their local hospital made the learning especially meaningful.”

James Whittall, the Trust's Sustainability, Energy and Social Value Lead, said:

“ The standard of the students' active travel proposals from Cheshire College was exceptional and genuinely impressed the MCHFT Healthier Futures team.”

“Their ideas show how thoughtful, costed design can make the new Leighton Hospital healthier and more accessible from day one, for everyone. ”

Helen Nellist added:

“ We’re extremely grateful to the Leighton Hospital project team and industry partners for supporting our students. Their guidance helped our students gain confidence and really understand what it’s like to work on a project of this scale.”

For students, the opportunity to explore a live project brought theory to

life. Liliana Chmielowska said:

“ Seeing a large-scale project like Leighton Hospital up close helped me understand what the industry is really like and the range of roles involved. Having professionals take the time to work with us was an amazing opportunity.”

The workshop also gave learners the chance to develop and present their own ideas for improving hospital design through active travel. Aldridge Nhenderere added:

“ Visiting the site and learning about roles such as quantity surveying and project management made it all make sense. It’s given me a much clearer understanding of how the construction industry works.”

The workshop underlines Cheshire College – South & West’s commitment to employer-led education, connecting students with live projects, supporting local regeneration, and preparing the next generation for careers in construction, design and the built environment.
