Every attempt is made to ensure the accuracy of this program. However, due to printing deadlines, it is possible that the list of degree candidates as presented within the commencement booklet may not be entirely accurate. Having a name appear in this booklet does not indicate that a degree has been completed; students’ degrees are officially conferred when the University certifies that all degree requirements have been met.

Many members of our University community collaborated to make this commencement special. We wish to thank those teaching and administrative faculty, members of the maintenance and support staff, student leaders, and our student assistants who have worked tirelessly to make this ceremony memorable for our graduates and their families and friends.

ZULMA R. TORO, PRESIDENT

Welcome! Thank you for joining the Central Family on this special day. We are so pleased to return to an in-person celebration for our undergraduate and graduate students. The COVID-19 pandemic presented all of us with many challenges and many losses during the past 15 months. Following the state’s health and safety guidelines, we postponed last year’s May Commencement exercises until October 2020 and, even at that, had to turn it into a virtual event. Today, in addition to the May 2021 candidates for degree who are in attendance, we are welcoming the May 2020 graduates who earned terminal degrees (Doctor of Education and Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice). Our graduates are inspiring and remarkable. You will learn about some of them in this program. Persevering through the pandemic, they continued to follow their dreams and complete their studies. Earning a university degree, even in the best of times, is quite demanding, so we are especially proud of all those who walk across the stage today. For the faculty, staff, families, and friends whose encouragement and guidance contributed to the success of our graduates, you have my gratitude. And so, as the 13th President of Central Connecticut State University, it is my pleasure to offer my congratulations to our candidates for degrees. Sincerely,

Zulma R. Toro, President

Sipping sparkling cider, Interim Vice President for Student Affairs John Tully and President Zulma Toro extend cheers to the Class of 2021 during the Senior Toast event in April.

EMILY GREGONIS ’17 S AT U R D AY, M AY 2 2

In the five years since her own CCSU graduation, Emily Gregonis ’17 has made her mark as a nurse and a compassionate human being. Gregonis secured her first professional position before she graduated and joined the nursing staff on the med-surge floor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. As charge nurse, she currently leads the team she was hired to join and enjoys her role as a preceptor for new nurses. When she launched her career, Emily brought the totality of her CCSU experience with her. As a student, she was highly focused and eager to embrace opportunities. She triple-majored in Nursing, Psychological Science, and Spanish, making the Dean’s List every semester and graduating summa cum laude. A noted scholar, Emily received numerous awards including the President’s Citation Award, the Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award, the Connecticut League for Nursing Peer Recognition Award, and the Excellence in Foreign Language Award. Gregonis also dedicated herself to student leadership activities and community service work. On campus, she served as treasurer of the Student Nurses’ Association and senator of the Student Government Association. She worked to enhance student life and advocated to bring therapy dogs on campus. Gregonis also traveled on medical mission trips to Appalachia and New Orleans, providing care to underserved populations. Closer to home, she volunteered all four years at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where she ran a weekly art activity for patients. As a professional, Gregonis still participates in various community service activities. She recently volunteered at a prison working with the children of inmates on early intervention. Next, she plans to put in time at an animal shelter.

STEPHANIE BLOZY S U N D AY, M AY 2 3

As the owner of Fleet Feet, a running apparel store in West Hartford, Stephanie Blozy is known for her infectious love of the sport and her generous spirit. Blozy grew up in a family of runners and ran her first race at age 5. After high school, Blozy attended St. Louis University where she studied meteorology. In 1993, she earned her B.S. in Meteorology and was preparing to join the workforce when she was diagnosed with Lupus. Her doctor told her to stop running, and she did — for seven years. Blozy turned her attention to her career, working first as a meteorologist in Atlanta. She later worked for WeatherBug, the weather site and mobile app, and served as its director of operations. She also reported live from the scene and was known as the face and voice behind WeatherBug, “Chief Chirp.” Blozy resumed running after learning more about the benefits of exercise for people with autoimmune disorders. Her health and energy improved dramatically, and Blozy had found a new purpose: To share the health benefits of running and to inspire others through her story. Blozy returned to school and earned a master’s degree in Health and Exercise Science from George Washington University in 2008, the same year she bought Fleet Feet. As she built her business, Blozy looked for ways to give back to people in need. In 2016, Fleet Feet became a sponsor of the CCSU-Ana Grace Project’s Finish the Race event, which brings New Britain elementary students to campus for a day of fun and inspiration, along with a free pair of sneakers. Blozy says giving sneakers to a child is a simple gesture with enormous potential: it brings strength, confidence, and a sense of personal empowerment.

Moise Moket

B.A. Social Work Moise Moket chose Social Work as a major and career for two admirable reasons: to help students and families eliminate barriers to the student’s academic success and to advocate for the human rights of all refugee populations. During his years at CCSU, Moket took several steps toward his career goal as president of the Social Work Club, a member of the Black Student Union, chair of the Student Union Board of Governors, an active participant on the Student Union Board, orientation leader, and an intern at New Britain High School. Moket has been recognized with the Social Work Departmental Honor Award; the Ebenezer D. Bassett Student Humanitarian Award; and graduation honors from the Center for Africana Studies. He will next pursue a master’s degree in Social Work.

Andy King

B.A. History Andy King is a recipient of this year’s President’s Citation Award, which is presented annually to outstanding seniors. Their student leadership has included a term as vice president of the Pride Club, as secretary of the CCSU College Democrats, a senator at large on the Student Government Association, and as a representative to the Student Advisory Committee of the CSCU Board of Regents, along with multiple leadership roles in the History Club. King also has served as a resident assistant since Fall 2018, and in 2019 they received Residence Life’s Community Service Award. King has interned at the New Britain Industrial Museum to conduct research and educational programs for young people and plans to pursue a master’s degree in Public History.

Mya Gray

B.A. Media Studies College, career, and childrearing aren’t mutually exclusive endeavors for Mya Saree’ Gray. The Waterbury native entered CCSU as a freshman in 2017. While taking her first film class, she became pregnant and found that pregnancy fueled rather than impeded her studies. She says the experience expanded her creativity and helped her to think ahead and outside the box. In only her second film class, Gray created “Baby Steps,” a short film about her pregnancy journey, and won a visual arts scholarship from the Congressional Black Caucus. Gray says she is happy she chose Central over all other Connecticut schools and felt very supported by the staff and communication department. With her concentration in Digital Filmmaking and Television Production concentration, Mya plans to make films that help people and impact the world in a positive way after she graduates.

Chinaechelum Okoro B.A. Criminology

Chinaechelum Okoro is one of the recipients of this year’s President’s Citation Award, which is presented annually to outstanding seniors. As a resident assistant, Okoro organized programs for students in self-care, healthy relationships, and diversity. In Fall 2020, she extended her concern for the well-being of others as an intern with the nonprofit organization Survivors of Homicide. The Student Government Association selected Okoro to represent CCSU at the Black Students Lead conference because of her many leadership contributions to the campus, which also include a turn as vice president of the Black Student Union and the Africana Students Organization and chair of the Student Union Board of Governors Mosaic Committee. Going forward, Okoro will pursue a master’s degree and hopes to travel and attend more diversity, equity, and inclusion conferences.

Johanna Zukowski

B.A. Political Science and Philosophy In her work as a peer tutor and as a four-year Student Government Association senator, Johanna Zukowski has worked tirelessly to enhance the student experience at CCSU, building bridges between students and faculty and helping other students achieve balance in their commitment to academic excellence, concurrent work obligations, and desire to be involved in campus activities. Her passion for political science led her to launch the Political Science Club at CCSU and to pursue an internship with the Office of the Connecticut Secretary of State. The Henry Barnard Scholar plans to attend law school next.

Megyn Hazel Jasman

B.A. Psychological Science An upper-level Research Methods course in her freshman year seemed intimidating at first, but it inspired Megyn Jasman’s passion for research and her career aspirations. Since then, this Barnard Scholar has assisted with faculty research, conducted multiple independent projects, and presented her research at professional conferences. Her independent study, relating to resilience in students impacted by mass shootings, garnered an Outstanding Research Award from her department. She will pursue graduate programs where she can further this work, with the ultimate goal of becoming a clinical practitioner to help those who suffer from post-traumatic stress symptoms.

Veronica Heigel

B.S. Accounting and French Veronica Heigel’s love for accounting led her to become a peer tutor for the School of Business; serve as the president of the Accounting Society; and undertake two audit internships with prestigious accounting firms. Meanwhile, her love of languages inspired her to take up French; become an officer in the French Club; and study abroad. She plans to marry her two passions by pursuing a master’s degree in Accounting and audit in a Frenchspeaking country. Veronica was recognized as one of this year’s Henry Barnard Scholars for her academic excellence, service, and leadership.

Jose Corchado

B.S. History Education Jose Corchado will continue his studies in education, in hopes of one day becoming a school principal. He is well on his way after serving for four years as treasurer of the Education Club and attending many meetings of the Connecticut Education Association’s Aspiring Educators program and several conferences. But, if there is one thing aside from education that Corchado is equally passionate about, it’s the theater. Throughout his career at CCSU, Corchado participated in several Theatre Department productions as a light and board operator, assistant set designer, and stage manager. Offstage, Corchado served as treasurer of the CCSU chapter of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology Club from 2017 to 2021. A fixture at the CCSU Student Center, Corchado served as the Finance chair of the Student Union Board of Governors; worked as the center’s manager; and was a popular face at the Information Desk. For his efforts, Corchado was awarded a President’s Citation award and the Ebenezer Bassett Student Compatriot Award.

Sarah Ulrichsen

B.S. Biology Henry Barnard Scholar Sarah Ulrichsen has traveled to 49 of the 50 states, visiting as many national parks as possible. This exposure to the country’s myriad ecosystems inspired her passion for environmental conservation and her major in Biology. Fittingly, her honors thesis addresses the impact of outdoor recreation activities on ecological systems. In addition to visiting Hawaii to complete her list of states, Sarah intends to pursue a graduate degree and further research the impact of human land use on wildlife.

Adedamola Adele Daniel Baek

B.S. Computer Engineering Technology In choosing his course of study, Daniel Baek went back to basics, drawing on the curiosity he’s held since childhood about how technology works. He brought that same perspective to his job at the IT Department at CCSU, an experience that he says introduced him to many people on campus and enhanced his coursework and sense of professionalism. He has since earned the Computer Electronics and Graphics Technology Departmental Honor Award for academic excellence and has already begun working full time as an IT systems engineer. In his spare time, Baek works part time as an aerial photographer and videographer. Next up, Baek will complete more professional certifications and, ideally, do some traveling.

David Hernandez

B.S. Biomolecular Sciences and B.A. Spanish David Hernandez will get right back to work this summer when he begins training as a physician at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Elmira, N.Y. His passion for Biomolecular Science already has garnered Hernandez the department’s Honor Award, a term as president of the Biology Club, and a student research grant in his junior year. Helping others has been another highlight of Hernandez’s career at CCSU, particularly his teaching experiences with middle schoolers through UConn Health’s Great Explorations program. He says he looks forward to helping future classes of pre-med students at CCSU, too.

B.S. Nursing

Alyssa Aponte says she always knew she was meant to help people, which contributed to her choice of Nursing as a major at CCSU. While completing this rigorous academic program, Aponte also served in the Connecticut Army National Guard. In 2019, she was board selected to attend the Army Officers Candidate School and successfully completed the 18-month program. She was commissioned as an Army Second Lieutenant in the Aviation Branch in August 2020 and has since been selected to attend U.S. Army helicopter pilot training at Fort Rucker, Ala., which she will begin after she graduates from CCSU and takes her nursing certification exam. Afterward, Aponte plans return to Connecticut to serve at her aviation unit in Windsor Locks and become an emergency nurse. Eventually, she also would like to continue her studies in Nursing.

CCSU HISTORY Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) is the largest university within the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system (CSCU) and the state’s oldest public institution of higher education. Founded in 1849 to train teachers for the “common schools,” the New Britain Normal School graduated its first class in 1850. Its first principal, Henry Barnard, later became the first United States Commissioner of Education. Initially located in downtown New Britain, the school The Normal Sc hool - 1849 moved in 1922 to its present campus. In 1933, the Normal School became Teachers College of Connecticut and was authorized to grant a fouryear baccalaureate degree. In 1959, our name was changed to Central Connecticut State College and in 1983 to Central Connecticut State University. As a comprehensive public university, CCSU provides broad access to 136 academic programs and is comprised four schools — Business; Education & Professional Studies; Engineering, Science, & Technology; and Graduate Studies — and the Carol A. Ammon College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The University’s graduate programs were inaugurated in the summer of 1955 when 41 teachers began their studies under the direction of Ulysses W. White, professor of education and psychology, and R. Heber Richards, professor of education and psychology. The School of Graduate Studies now offers 75 programs and additional specializations that reflect high academic standards for advanced study and address the workforce needs of the state. CCSU is a driving force of the economic, social, cultural, and intellectual development of Connecticut, an enabler of social mobility, and a committed community partner. The integration of the liberal arts into the University’s professional programs provides the foundation needed to prepare a flexible, engaged, and adaptable workforce. More than 85 percent of our graduates remain in Connecticut; as such, Central is a vital pipeline for an array of professions in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, including engineering, social services, health care, law enforcement, education, business, and industry, among others. In January 2017, Dr. Zulma R. Toro began her tenure as the 13th president of CCSU. Her presidency marks two milestones for CCSU: She is the university’s first female president, as well as its first Hispanic chief executive.

CONNECTED TO OUR PAST

ACADEMIC REGALIA Many of the accessories and symbols that add color and drama to academic ceremonies date back to the Middle Ages when universities dominated European intellectual life. University Mace The mace was carved from mahogany. Its top, shaped like an acanthus plant found in Corinthian architecture, surmounts a deep-fluted staff. Four gold-leafed medallions inlaid at the top are inscribed with a symbol: a globe to signify the University’s international initiatives, a book of knowledge, a group of students emblematic of leadership and diversity, and the state seal. University Staff Also made of mahogany and similar in design to the mace, the staff is carried as a symbol of authority. A gold-leafed ball rests atop the staff, to which are attached tassels in the blue-and-white school colors. Both the mace and staff were designed and carved by the late Peter J. Vernesoni, emeritus professor of Technology Education. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from CCSU. University University Medallion Mace The medallion represents the president’s leadership and continuity of the Office of the President. Engraved on the medallion are symbols representing each academic school.

Academic Attire The tradition of academic garb came to America by way of British universities. The bachelor’s gown, with its wide sleeves, is worn closed. The master’s gown, which may be worn open, is distinguished by its long pointed sleeves. Doctoral gowns also may be worn open. Its sleeves are long and wide, and three velvet chevrons adorn each sleeve; two matching velvet panels accent the front of the gown. Academic hoods, made of material similar to that used in the gown, are lined with silk in the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The particular length, shape, and color of the hood also signify the degree. Holders of CCSU master’s degrees and sixth-year certificates wear a blue-and-white satin hood trimmed in the color representing their degree. Additionally, students who earn the sixth-year certificate receive a white cord. The colored trim on the hood represents the graduate’s degree and area of study: Ammon College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences: Master of Arts – white Master of Science – gold School of Business: Master of Business Administration and Master of Science – drab School of Education & Professional Studies: Doctorate, Sixth-Year Certificate, Master of Science, and Master of Teaching – light blue School of Engineering, Science, & Technology: Master of Arts – white Master of Science – orange The academic cap, most often made in the Oxford mortarboard style, is constructed of black broadcloth, although the doctor’s cap may be velvet.

Tassels vary in length, depending upon the degree; the doctor’s tassel is usually gold. It has become customary in most schools to leave the tassel draped over the left temple at all times.

PANDEMIC PERSEVERANCE Fifteen months and counting! The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly changed our way of life as individuals, as a society, and as a university community. In March 2020, we moved to a fully online operation to complete the spring semester. After substantially upgrading facilities and online learning technologies while also implementing advanced health and safety protocols, we reopened most campus facilities for the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters. Adjusting to the “new normal” required perseverance. We are proud of our students for their positive attitudes and salute the faculty and staff who worked long hours to bring campus back to life!

Let us praise her glorious name, Alma Mater, blue and white. Gather round the sacred flame, of Alma Mater’s nurt’ring light. Though we wander from her side, In our hearts she’ll e’er abide. Let her sons and daughters sing of Alma Mater triumphing.

Lyrics by Professor Emeritus David Gerstein, Department of English Tune “Madrid” arranged by Professor Emeritus B. Glenn Chandler, Department of Music
