Welcome! Thank you for joining the Central family on this special day.
Today we celebrate the culmination of a grand undertaking by our students. Often, in the rush to complete final exams and projects, theses, and dissertations, our students have little time to reflect on this important milestone. So, to our graduates I offer some advice: Take a breath and make every effort to truly enjoy this day — you have earned it.
On this day, we are honoring both our undergraduate and graduate students. In witnessing each other’s accomplishments, it is my hope the members of our graduating class will reflect on how far they have come and how far they can go, because while commencements recognize the achievement of an academic milestone, they also signal the start of a new era, filled with exciting possibilities.
I am so proud of our remarkable students, and I thank the faculty, staff, families, and friends whose support, encouragement, and guidance have contributed to their success. On page 26 of this program, you will be introduced to a sampling of our outstanding students. In addition to their personal and academic achievements, some have enriched the CCSU experience of their fellow students, while others have contributed to the vitality of this University and our communities. They all reflect Central’s core values of mutual respect, compassion, and productive inquiry.
And so, as the 13th president of Central Connecticut State University, it is my pleasure to offer my congratulations to our candidates for degrees.

JANNETTE CAREY ’77
A scientist whose research seeks to unravel key processes of cellular biology, Dr. Jannette Carey has used her leadership roles to promote access to undergraduate research opportunities, to increase diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields, and to foster innovation through a program involving entrepreneurial applications of laboratory research.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Carey began her career in science at what was then Central Connecticut State College, where she earned a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology in 1977. She went on to earn a doctorate in Physical Chemistry at the University of Illinois, ChampaignUrbana, in 1983 and to do postdoctoral work in Molecular Biology and Physical Biochemistry at Stanford University. She was appointed in 1989 to the faculty of Princeton University, where she is currently a tenured associate professor of Chemistry and Molecular Biology.
Since 2003, Dr. Carey has been the program director of a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates Training Site in molecular biophysics, offering laboratory engagements at Princeton and internationally for undergraduates whose own institutions may not offer robust research opportunities.
Dr. Carey is also the co-program director of the innovation-focused US NSF I-Corps Hub: Northeast Corridor Region, recruiting and training diverse groups of entrepreneurs to help them translate basic research to innovative societal applications.
A volunteer instructor for the Princeton University Prison Teaching Initiative since 2012, Dr. Carey has received NSF funding to promote STEM teaching in U.S. prisons and establish research internships for formerly incarcerated undergraduates.
Dr. Carey was named the 2005-2006 Tage Erlander guest professor of the Swedish National Science Foundation, the highest award given to visiting scholars, and holds an ongoing prestigious appointment as a visiting scientist of the Czech Academy of Sciences. She is the author or co-author of dozens of peer-reviewed scientific papers.

BILL BERLONI ’89
Bill Berloni is a Connecticut native and graduated from Central Connecticut State University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre. He is a renowned entertainment animal trainer, animal rights advocate, and humanitarian.
Through his company, William Berloni Theatrical Animals, Mr. Berloni has trained animal actors who have appeared alongside some of the industry’s biggest names, including Bernadette Peters, Sarah Jessica Parker, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Adam Sandler, Julia Roberts, and many others. Mr. Berloni’s animals have performed on Broadway, at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, and in numerous theaters across the country.
Mr. Berloni got his big break at the age of 20, when a producer at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam offered him a chance to act professionally and gain his Equity Card. In return, all Bill had to do was find and train a dog to play Sandy in the original production of “Annie.”
Mr. Berloni found his Sandy at the Connecticut Humane Society in Newington and began his career-long commitment to using rescued animals in his work.
Mr. Berloni has served as head animal trainer for many television shows and films, including “And Just Like That,” “Kaleidoscope,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Greatest Showman,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” and the 2014 film version of “Annie” to name just a few.
Throughout his career, Mr. Berloni has received numerous creative and humanitarian awards, including the 2011 Tony Award Honor for Excellence in Theater — the first ever given to an animal trainer — the Drama League’s 2017 Unique Contribution to the Theatre Award; the 2014 Outer Critics Circle Award for Special Achievement; the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Palm Award for Best Animal Performance; the ASPCA Humanitarian Award; and the American Humane Association Richard Craven Award.
In addition to his work as a trainer, Mr. Berloni is the director of Animal Behavior and Training at the Humane Society of New York and has written several books, including “Broadway Tails.”

Every spring the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities Foundation selects seniors from the four state universities as Barnard Scholars. To be considered, a student must have a minimum 3.7 GPA and a record of significant community service.
Emily Cardinale, B.S. in Nursing
An Honors Program student, Emily completed a thesis titled “Maternal Mortality in Rural American Society,” which she presented at Hartford Healthcare’s annual Evidence-Based Practice Conference last year. She also coordinated a blood drive for Maternal Health Awareness Day in January and this spring worked with the nonprofit Lucinda’s House to coordinate a baby shower designed to connect pregnant women of color in New Britain with health care resources. Emily also assisted in two COVID-19 education and testing events for new students and worked as a certified College Life Coach at Success Central, a peer mentoring program. After graduation, Emily will seek a nursing position, with the long-term goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.
Tara Hightower, B.F.A. Theatre
Tara has served as stage manager for numerous CCSU campus productions and completed a Stage Management internship with Shelton’s Valley Shakespeare Festival in 2022. The recipient of the Thaddeus Torp Scholarship for Outstanding Departmental Contribution, Tara has been an officer of CCSU’s chapter of the U.S. Institute of Theatre Technology and a member of two student theatre groups. At the 2023 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, her prompt-book submission garnered an Honorable Mention, and she was recognized with two merit awards for stage management and one for prop design. This summer, Tara will serve as stage manager for two productions at the Lanes Coven Theatre Company in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Nicholas Knight, B.S. Music Education
Nicholas is described by his teachers as being “an ideal music student” who demonstrates both natural talent and a dedication to improving. The recipient of the Thomasina L. Arena Scholarship Award for students pursuing teaching certification, the Margaret and John Paskavitch Award for Music students, Nicholas has gone well beyond the Music Education program’s extensive requirements. Nicholas also served as vice president of the CCSU chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and is a member of the Master Singers of Worcester. Through the state’s NextGen Educators program, Nicholas has served as a teacher assistant, tutor, and substitute in public schools in Waterbury and Newington over the past few years. He is currently a long-term substitute music teacher at Latimer Lane Elementary School in Simsbury.

Yuliya Polichshuk, B.A. Psychological Science and Art
Yuliya was born in Ukraine and grew up in Kazakhstan, where she worked as a journalist and advertising writer before immigrating to the United States. Working with a peer tutor early on led her to become an award-winning peer tutor herself. The recipient of a Rich Royster and Brittany Mariani Endowed Scholarship in the Department of Psychological Science, Yuliya is a member of the Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and received the 2021 Shanette Washington Distinguished Service Award from the Psychological Science Department. Yuliya currently works for Community Mental Health Affiliates, where she is a residential monitor. She plans to pursue her studies further in the Clinical Professional Counseling graduate program at CCSU.

President’s Citation awards are presented to seniors nominated by faculty and staff. The students are selected based on their leadership on campus, volunteerism, and academic success.
Mia Dorantes, B.A. Political Science
Described by her peers as a strong advocate for social justice, Mia was a member of the inaugural cohort of the John Lewis Institute of Social Justice and received a scholarship for her reflections on the topic of “What Black Lives Matter Means to Me.” She served as president of the CCSU chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha and captain of the Cheerleading team. A substitute teacher at Capital Preparatory Magnet School, Mia also served as the volunteer cheerleading coach for middle and high school teams. Her other community work includes an internship at the Adelbrook Behavioral and Developmental Learning Center and service to the Plymouth Food Bank. Mia will next pursue a graduate degree at UConn’s School of Public Policy.
Jaydakiss Metz, B.A. Sociology
Jaydakiss was honored by the Sociology Department with its Paul Hochstim Award for Excellence in Social Theory. An advocate for collective bargaining, Jaydakiss was instrumental in organizing a campus-based event held in conjunction with the Connecticut State University American Association of University Professors union. Through his efforts, several CCSU students submitted testimony or testified in person before the Connecticut General Assembly in support of increasing funding for Connecticut’s state universities. As a volunteer for the Friendship Center of New Britain, Jaydakiss assisted with the Temporary Living Program for young adults who are homeless and worked to connect others experiencing homelessness with community resources. At the Hospital For Special Care, Jaydakiss works alongside staff to assist patients and he is a life skills instructor at Ability Beyond in Bethel.

Cade Snow, B.S. Construction Management
Cade has dedicated much of his time and energy to the CCSU Brotherhood Initiative and its mission to support the health, retention, and graduation of male students. Drawing upon his own experiences, Cade counseled new students who struggle with the transition to college. As the Brotherhood’s operations manager, he ran meetings, managed the budget, and conducted outreach. He served as chair of the Brotherhood Men’s Health and Wellness Forum twice and received the Brotherhood Initiative Founder’s Award in 2022. Cade also assisted in the coordination of the Ebenezer D. Bassett Student Achievement Award ceremony, Real Talk Conversations, Making the Grade Study Sessions, and several other campus events. For his efforts, Cade received the Ebenezer D. Bassett Student Achievement Award.
Claire Viola, B.A. Psychological Science
A member of the Honors Program, Claire has garnered numerous scholarships, including an Honors Program Scholarship, a Provost Scholarship, a Choral Scholarship, the George R. Muirhead Scholarship, and a scholarship prize based on her submission to the prompt of “What Black Lives Matter Means to Me.” Her Honors thesis explored ways to combat obesity in the U.S. without promoting unhealthy dieting behaviors. Claire also served as a Student Advisory Board ambassador and resident assistant and participated in the club Lacrosse team, the Pre-Health Society, and a study abroad program at the University of Hertfordshire in England. Her community service includes volunteering in the Hospital of Central Connecticut’s Emergency Department and at the Newington Veterans Affairs Clinic.
Jordyn Williams, B.S. Accounting
Jordyn is known for her dedication to ensuring students feel a sense of belonging on campus. She served as an orientation leader for the Office of New Student Programs for two summers and is a resident assistant. She also has a supervisory role as operations manager for RECentral Campus Recreation and received an RECentral Outstanding Achievement in Leadership Award in 2021. Jordyn’s campus leadership activities include service as the public relations officer for Dancentral and secretary for the Karate Club. As a member of the Central Activities Network, Jordyn held the offices of outreach coordinator, travel coordinator, and vice president of finance and administration. A volunteer income tax preparer, Jordyn is pursuing work as an accountant at Disney World.

ABOUT CCSU
Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) is the largest university within the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system and the state’s oldest public institution of higher education.
Founded in 1849 to train teachers for the “common schools,” the New Britain Normal School graduated its first class in 1850. Its first principal, Henry Barnard, later became the first United States Commissioner of Education.
Initially located in downtown New Britain, the school moved in 1922 to its present campus. In 1933, the Normal School became Teachers College of Connecticut and was authorized to grant four-year baccalaureate degrees. In 1959, it became Central Connecticut State College; in 1983, it was elevated to university status.

As a comprehensive public university, CCSU is comprised of four schools — Business; Education & Professional Studies; Engineering, Science, & Technology; and Graduate Studies — in addition to the Carol A. Ammon College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. More than 100 undergraduate majors in 80 fields of study are offered at CCSU. The School of Graduate Studies offers 90 full- and part-time programs, along with additional specializations that reflect high academic standards for advanced study and address the state’s workforce needs.
More than 85 percent of CCSU’s graduates remain in Connecticut; as such, the University is a vital pipeline for an array of professions in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, including engineering, social services, health care, law enforcement, education, business, and industry, among others. The integration of the liberal arts into the University’s professional programs serves as the foundation for preparing a flexible, engaged, and adaptable workforce.
In January 2017, Dr. Zulma R. Toro began her tenure as the 13th president of CCSU. Her presidency marks two milestones for CCSU: She is the university’s first female president, as well as its first Hispanic chief executive.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Many of the accessories and symbols that add color and drama to academic ceremonies date back to the Middle Ages when universities dominated European intellectual life.
University Mace
The mace was carved from mahogany. Its top, shaped like an acanthus plant found in Corinthian architecture, surmounts a deep-fluted staff. Each of the four gold-leafed medallions inlaid into the top are inscribed with a symbol: a globe to signify the University’s international initiatives; a book of knowledge; a group of students emblematic of leadership and diversity; and the state seal.
University Staff
Also crafted of mahogany and similar in design to the mace, the staff is carried as another symbol of authority. A gold-leafed ball rests atop the staff, to which are attached tassels in the blue-and-white school colors.
Both the mace and staff were designed and carved by the late Peter J. Vernesoni, emeritus professor of technology education. Dr. Vernesoni earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from CCSU.
University Medallion
The medallion represents the president’s leadership and continuity of the Office of the President. Engraved on the medallion are symbols representing each academic school.
Academic Attire
The tradition of academic garb came to America by way of British universities. The bachelor’s gown, with its wide sleeves, is worn closed. The master’s gown, which may be worn open, is distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves.
Doctoral gowns also may be worn open. Its sleeves are long and wide, and three velvet chevrons adorn each sleeve; two matching velvet panels accent the front of the gown.
Academic hoods, made of material similar to that used in the gown, are lined with silk in the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The particular length, shape, and color of the hood also signify the degree.
Holders of CCSU master’s degrees and sixth-year certificates wear a blue-and-white satin hood trimmed in the color representing their degree. Additionally, students earning the sixth-year certificate are presented with a white cord.

The academic cap, most often made in the Oxford mortarboard style, is constructed of black broadcloth, although the doctor’s cap may be velvet. Tassels vary in length, depending upon the degree; the doctor’s tassel is usually gold. It has become customary in most schools to leave the tassel draped over the left temple at all times.
