Dear Friends of CCS, Welcome to the 38th Detroit International Wine Auction benefiting the College for Creative Studies. I want to thank our Leadership Committee and my event Co-Chairs Karen and Matthew Cullen, Don Manvel, Peggy and Dave Meador, Vivian Pickard and my wife Mary Beth, for making this year’s event an unforgettable experience. It is so exciting to be at The Fillmore Detroit, and once again experience the revitalization of Detroit by celebrating in another one of the city’s beautiful venues.

I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Gérard Bertrand, Vintner, of Gérard Bertrand, our Featured Vintner for this evening. Gérard Bertrand is the leading expert from the South of France recognized by all wine lovers. Gérard is committed to sharing the exceptional diversity and characteristics of each of his vineyards, which produces wines, reds, whites, rosés, varietal wines or appellation wines.

This year I would also like to give a big welcome to the College for Creative Studies new President, Don Tuski. Don began his tenure at CCS July 1 of 2019, eager to build on CCS’s solid foundation and to continue advocating for the value of art and design education. He succeeded Richard L. Rogers, who retired from CCS after 25 years.

My thanks also go to General Motors for its Lead Sponsorship and longstanding significant partnership with the College. GM’s legacy of support for the school from which it recruits so many talented designers demonstrates their commitment to CCS and to the City of Detroit.

This event ranks as one of the top charitable wine auctions in the United States, and is number one in the Midwest.

Through your generosity and commitment to supporting undergraduate CCS student scholarships and free art programs for Detroit youth, you, our donors, made all this possible. Scholarship support is the number-one need of the College; 98 percent of our students receive some sort of financial aid, and your gifts allow the College to nurture and enrich the talent of promising artists and designers from metro Detroit and around the world.

This evening is a celebration of creativity, generosity and support for an outstanding institution. CCS is one of the nation’s preeminent arts education institutions. AUCTION CO-CHAIRS

Karen and Matthew Cullen Bedrock Detroit Matt and Karen Cullen are strong supporters of our community and are pleased to once again serve as Co-Chairs of this important event for the College for Creative Studies. The Cullens previously chaired The Art of Wine events in 2010 and 2013.

Matt Cullen is Chief Executive Officer of Bedrock, a full-service real estate firm specializing in acquiring, developing, leasing, financing and managing commercial and residential buildings. Since its founding in 2011, Bedrock and its affiliates have invested and committed more than $5.6 billion to acquiring and developing more than 100 properties, including new construction of ground-up developments in downtown Detroit and Cleveland totaling more than 18 million square feet.

He also is the Chairman of JACK Entertainment, an urban gaming company which owns and operates gaming properties in the Midwest. Cullen also is a principal of Rock Ventures, the Detroit-based organization that serves and connects entrepreneur and Quicken Loans Founder and Chairman Dan Gilbert’s family of more than 100 companies.

Cullen is a veteran of General Motors (GM), where he was responsible for the corporation’s 450-millionsquare-foot global real estate portfolio.

Cullen was Chief Architect of GM’s acquisition and development of the Renaissance Center, and since 2003 he has helped oversee the billion-dollar redevelopment of the city’s international riverfront as the Founding Chairman of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

He serves as volunteer President and Chief Executive Officer of the M-1 RAIL Streetcar initiative and is the Chairman of Invest Detroit; Vice Chairman of the Downtown Detroit Partnership; and serves on the Detroit Zoological Society executive committee. He is also a board member of the Detroit Regional Chamber, Hudson-Webber Foundation and The Penske Corporation,

and a trustee of the College for Creative Studies, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, The Parade Company and The Metropolitan Detroit YMCA. A native Detroiter, Cullen earned a degree in Economics from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Detroit Mercy. He also completed the Senior Executive Program at Harvard University.

Karen Cullen is happily retired following a 25+ year career in public relations and communications. A graduate of the University of Michigan with a BA in Communications, she held several executive positions throughout her career at GM, Delphi Automotive and Ilitch Holdings, Inc. until she retired in 2013.

Today, Karen is actively involved in the community, serving on the Board of Directors of the Karmanos Cancer Institute and Karmanos Cancer Center, as well as the Board of Directors of University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy. She serves as a Trustee with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She is also actively involved with the Detroit Zoo, Belle Isle Conservancy and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

Donald W. Manvel AVL Donald W. Manvel is the Chairman and CEO of AVL Americas. AVL, headquartered in Graz, Austria, is the world’s largest and independent company for the development of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel powertrain systems, as well as fuel cell and hybrid technologies. Manvel joined the company in 2002.

Prior to joining AVL, Manvel served as Acting President and Senior Vice-President of Operations for DEKA Research and Development, the firm led

by Dean Kamen that developed and launched the Segway Human Transporter, the first self-balancing, electric transportation device. In that role, he oversaw the development and implementation of an Operations and Supply Chain System for the firm. Manvel joined DEKA in 1999.

Before joining DEKA, Manvel served as President of the Manlift Division of Grove Worldwide in Shady Grove, Pennsylvania. While at Grove Worldwide, Manvel supervised a reduction in the product design cycle from 30 to 10 months and directed the sale of the company to a competitor.

Manvel received his MBA from Wayne State University in 1974. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Michigan State University in 1972.

Manvel previously chaired the Detroit International Wine Auction in 2009.

Manvel began his career with Chrysler Corporation in 1972, where until 1998 he held a variety of senior executive positions in various parts of the world.

Peggy and Dave Meador DTE Energy Dave and Peggy Meador are strong advocates for reducing barriers to employment, providing human service needs and enhancing the quality of life for residents in Detroit and the surrounding communities.

Dave is Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer of DTE Energy, and oversees information technology, procurement, fleet, facilities, corporate communications as well as government, corporate and public affairs, as well as the company’s philanthropic giving. Dave leads the company’s efforts to be a force for growth and prosperity in the communities where DTE serves.

He is Co-Chair of Mayor Duggan’s Detroit Workforce Development Board, which has set a goal of employing 40,000 Detroiters over the next five years. In addition, he is involved in various community and civic activities, is the Co-Founder and Chair of Autism Alliance of Michigan’s Board of Trustees, the Hudson-Webber Foundation, Downtown Detroit Partnership, and Business Leaders for Michigan, Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation. Dave also serves on the Michigan Humane Society Executive Committee as Vice Chair, the Wayne State University Foundation Board and is an Emeritus Director of the Detroit Institute of Arts.

He is also a Director of Amerisure Companies, one of the nation’s leading providers of commercial insurance.

Peggy is a full-time mother and grandmother, and a relentless advocate for children and adults on the autism spectrum, for owners of service dogs, for enhancing Michigan’s special education and for employing adults with disabilities.

Dave and Peggy previously chaired the Detroit International Wine Auction in 2018.

Mary Beth and James M. Nicholson PVS Chemicals Inc. Jim and Mary Beth Nicholson are excited and delighted to serve as 2019 Wine Auction Chairs and they wish everyone a memorable evening. They have been enthusiastic supporters of the event for more than two decades.

Jim is honored to serve as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for CCS. In addition to his role as Co-Chairman of PVS Chemicals, Inc., he serves a number of organizations, including Amerisure, Inc., the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the Nature Conservancy of Michigan.

Mary Beth serves on a number of community boards and is active in volunteer work around the Grosse Pointe Public School System. In addition, she leads the Michigan Scottish Pipes and Drums as Pipe Major, plays bagpipes, and competes both in solo and band competitions throughout the region.

Jim and Mary Beth have three daughters and reside in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Vivian R. Pickard The Pickard Group

Vivian Pickard is an accomplished Fortune 500 executive with expertise in business development, strategic planning, corporate and community relations, marketing, public policy, healthcare and philanthropic endeavors.

She serves as President and CEO of The Pickard Group where she advises Fortune 500 CEOs, private corporate CEOs, philanthropic CEOs and Chamber of Commerce organizations. She was appointed by Governor Snyder to serve as one of five members of the Medical Marijuana Board for the State of Michigan, which ended April 2019.

Pickard’s depth of knowledge and experience in developing strategy and overseeing giving efforts in the areas of education, health, human services, the environment and community development led to General Motors philanthropic leadership on a national and international level. Pickard’s exemplary leadership over the last 20 years has led to multiple partnerships and investments that have helped change lives, influence communities, improve the environment and most importantly, establish General Motors as an international philanthropic leader. Her ability to combine her corporate and community relations with partnership development has contributed to her success.

Pickard serves as an active member of Fifth Third Bank — Eastern Michigan. She has been instrumental in helping to develop strategic initiatives for improving the organization’s bottom line.

Most recently, as President, General Motors Foundation and Director, Corporate Relations, Pickard was responsible for all of General Motors’ U.S. giving, the development of the strategic plan for the foundation and corporate giving, and an annual budget of more than $42 million during her tenure in this position, she significantly brought strategy and impact to GM’s overall giving- and cause-related marketing. Further, Pickard increased General Motors’ “Share of Voice” in the automotive field to 58% of overall automotive media, which generated vehicle sales. She was also a member of General Motors’ Diversity Council and partnered with GM’s global business units as an advisor.

As a community advocate and philanthropist, Pickard serves on numerous boards, including: Inforum, The Parade Company, National Cares Mentoring Movement, Trumpet Awards Foundation, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Sphinx Organization, as well as the Black Women’s Agenda. She is also a member of the Executive Leadership Council, Women Corporate Directors, the International Women’s Forum and she serves on the Executive Committee for The Links, Inc., as well as participates as a Board Member of The Links Foundation.

Her previous roles include past President of The Black Women’s Agenda, Inc., and past Board Chair of Inforum, a highly acclaimed professional women’s alliance.

Fritz Hatton Proprietor, Arietta Winery Fritz Hatton and his immediate family own Arietta, one of Napa’s top producers of Bordeaux-style blended wines. He is also the nation’s most experienced wine auctioneer, having begun his career in Christie’s Wine Department in 1980. After a 12-year management career for Christie’s in North America and the Far East, Hatton took a musical sabbatical on the West Coast in the early 1990s, and conducted his first auction for the Napa Valley Vintners in 1992.

Out of his musical and wine country experiences with his winemaker friend John Kongsgaard emerged a wine brand with a musically inspired name: Arietta.

In 1995 Hatton headed to Christie’s New York to serve as Director of Christie’s U.S. Wine Auction Department.

In 1998, he returned to California to launch Arietta with his wife, Caren. He remained with Christie’s as Consultant and Principal Wine Auctioneer before joining Zachys Wine Auctions in 2002. He continues to conduct all commercial wine auctions for Zachys, as well as numerous charity wine auctions nationwide, in addition to overseeing the production and sales of Arietta.

Fritz and Caren Hatton reside in Napa, California, with their two daughters, Libby and Hattie. A native of Michigan, Hatton is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and a summa cum laude graduate of Yale with a degree in English Literature. He returned to Yale as one of the first students to enroll in the Yale

School of Organization and Management, from which he received an MBA in 1979. Apart from family and wine, his major interest is classical music, and he is just as happy playing the piano as he is encouraging bidders to turn cash into collectible wine.

FEATURED VINTNER GÉRARD BERTRAND

Gérard Bertrand Vintner In 1975, Georges Bertrand started initiating his son, Gérard, to the harvest techniques at the Domaine de Villemajou, a unique terroir in the Corbières area.

Gérard Bertrand inherited his father’s passion for wine and his love for the Languedoc region. Gérard Bertrand already knew as a child that he would be a winemaker and a leader who will perpetuate the wine passion and the pioneering spirit of his father.

In 1987, Gérard Bertrand took over the Domaine de Villemajou. In 1992, he created the Gérard Bertrand Wines Company, which will buy the Domaine de Cigalus, Château Laville Bertrou and Domaine de L’Aigle in the following years.

The acquisition, in 2002, of the Château L’Hospitalet allowed Gérard Bertrand to reach a new dimension: more than an exceptional estate overlooking the sea, the Hospitalet, headquarters of the group, is a place entirely dedicated to the Mediterranean Art de Vivre.

Today, the vineyard is composed of 15 estates on the most beautiful terroirs and crus of the Languedoc Roussillon, Corbières — Boutenanc, Terrasses du Larzac, Momervois La Livinière, La Clape, Limoux, Cabrières … to mention a few. From now on, the biodynamic practices are extended to all estates in the respect of DEMETER certification. In 2023, all the plots have achieved their conversion to biodynamics.

Gérard Bertrand and his teams are convinced that making wine in harmony with nature is the best way to bring out typical character of terroir and to create fine wines.

Mobile Bidding Register your phone at check-in to bid on Silent Auction and Art Auction lots.

Mobile bidding allows guests to view the Auction catalog, place bids, follow your favorite items and bid from any location, specify a maximum bid and watch items of interest.

Phones may be registered when you arrive at the event or at any point before midnight on Saturday, October 19.

Login information will be texted to all registered smartphones prior to the beginning of the Auction and once individuals are registered after bidding begins.

Closing times are clearly marked on signage throughout the Auction area, and text messages will alert you prior to lot closings.

In the event that mobile bidding becomes unavailable, bid sheets will be placed in front of each item with preset bid increments and a “buy it now” price. The winner will be the bidder whose name is on the preset line with the highest bid at the time the auction closes.

Live Auction Bidding To bid on a Live Auction lot, raise your paddle to be acknowledged by the auction spotters and/or auctioneer, who will confirm the highest bidder. Should a dispute arise between bidders, or should the auctioneer doubt the validity of any bid, the auctioneer shall have the absolute right to resolve the dispute, reoffer, resell or withdraw the lot in question. Auction lots that contain experiences will be shared with winners the week of the event. The College for Creative Studies can assist in making shipping arrangements for any non-wine lots (which CCS cannot legally ship), at the cost of the auction lot purchaser.

CCS will provide a certificate to each winning bidder containing specific expiration dates, restrictions and details. CCS staff will make every effort to contact winning bidders of travel and experience lots to ensure arrangements are made prior to expiration.

Darcy Deneau has earned a notable reputation for her Detroit landscapes and has been pursued for many commissions, including the 28th Detroit International Jazz Festival poster artwork, a large-scale Detroit landscape for the Hudson-Weber Foundation and a 29’ x 7’ mural for Garage Restaurant and Fuel Bar, in Northville, Michigan. Deneau works daily in her studio and is actively involved in the Detroit art community.

Currently she is a part of the exhibition committee and is an honorary board member after completing her chairmanship at the Detroit Artists Market (DAM).

For Lenore Gimpert, painting is a testament to courage and persistence. After completing her BFA in painting from CCS, Gimpert was accepted into Wayne State University’s graduate program and earned both an MA in Drawing and an MFA in Painting. Inspired from her success, she turned to abstract painting and began to experiment with new materials. Gimpert uses dripping techniques, smearing, splattering and pouring when working with paints. Her award-winning work can be found in many private and public collections internationally.

Detroit is Mark Hooper’s hometown. He attended what is now the College for Creative Studies and currently divides his time between New York City and Portland, Oregon.

Hooper’s photos have been featured in Communication Arts, Graphis, Archive, Photo District News, The APA National Photo Awards, The Kelly Awards, The One Show, The National and International Polaroid Awards, The Society of Publication Designers, Popular Photography, The 2006 Oregon Biennial and American Photography.

His work is included in many private collections as well as the Polaroid Collection.

Dave Jordano has received numerous awards. He first received an honorable mention in the Houston Center for Photography’s Long-term Fellowship Project in 2003, and then received the Curator’s Choice Award the following year. He is a four-time top-20 finalist in the Photolucida’s “Critical Mass” national photography competition in Portland, Oregon. In 2015, Jordano was awarded the Best of Show Award from the Griffin Museum of Photography’s annual competition, became a finalist in the triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition from the National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C., and received the prestigious $50,000 AIMIA/AGO Photography Prize in Canada for his work in Detroit.

Jeannette Kuhn grew up in the Detroit area and graduated from the College for Creative Studies in 1974. Kuhn moved with her husband to Chicago in 1977. After raising two creative children, Kuhn got back into photography and returned to Detroit to document the city in the quiet hours of the night. Kuhn feels that Detroit has a special order and creative side to it that is especially pronounced in the saturated contrast of the nightlight.

Andrew Madvin’s current work is an exploration into order and chaos and the harmony found within that dichotomy.

He is utilizing several refined skills in glass such as blowing, hot sculpting, cutting and polishing. In addition to CCS, Madvin studied at the California College of the Arts and Pilchuck Glass School in Washington. Madvin’s profound glass experiences resulted in his opening Axiom Glass Studio in Detroit in 2000. Here, Madvin is producing all of his original glass works to the highest quality and craftsmanship. His limited-edition fine craft and fine art sculptures continue to evolve as his techniques flourish and his ideas expand. Robert Madvin was first introduced to glass while enrolled in high school by his older brother, Andrew Madvin, also a successful glass artist. He later studied glassblowing at CCS and the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu, Hawaii. Madvin’s primary inspiration derives from nature; his artwork focuses on natural elements, textures and color that he encounters in his travels and his day-to-day endeavors. While Madvin was studying in Hawaii, he developed his most prominent glass sculpture series called Pohaku, meaning “rock” or “stone.”

Joseph Mayernik was born in Detroit and attended CCS, receiving a BA in Art Direction/Communications in 1998.

He’s a problem solver, artesian, illustrator, fine artist, writer, thespian, radio DJ, husband and father. Since 2015, Mayernik’s “Hero Collages,” comprised of vintage comics, have been exhibited in galleries across the country and as commissions in homes across the United States.

In 2016, his work “Indestructible” earned the George Eastman Award and the People’s Choice award at the RoCo member show. Currently, Mayernik is the Owner/ Creative Director of Brandtatorship, a full-service adverting agency located in the historic High Falls District in Rochester, New York.

Ackeem Salmon is a Jamaican-Detroit based artist currently studying Photography and Fine Art at the College for Creative Studies. Internationally recognized for his work, Salmon has exhibited his artwork at places such as Galerie Joseph in Paris, France, the Val de Vie Estate in Cape Town, South Africa, Sotheby’s Auction House in New York, and a list of other prominent galleries and venues.

Salmon explores concepts of cultural history and philosophy in how they affect people’s identities and individualities. From art forms like Junkanoo within the Caribbean to philosophical writings from Hannah Arendt — he combines them with modern fashion and theatre with photography.

Mark Sengbusch received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2008 and his BFA from CCS in 2002.

His symbolic language explores the overlap between written communication and design. His paintings were included in “The Armory Show” 2015 and 2016 with David Klein Gallery. “Blue Tunnel” is a Plexiglas sculpture using all interlocking pieces, with no hardware used.

Brutalist architecture, Japanese wood joinery, simple toys like Lego, and old and new technologies have inspired Sengbusch’s recent sculptures.

Robert Sestok is a painter and sculptor living and working in Detroit. He is the recipient of a PollockKrasner and Erb Foundation grants, and National Endowment of the Arts. A mentor to young artists, Sestok established City Sculpture Park in 2014 for public use and enjoyment. Sestok was awarded a Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellowship for visual arts in 2017.

From first-generation Lebanese descent, Kaiser Suidan was raised in a large family — six brothers and one sister — in small-town Milford, Michigan. His passion for gardening, and working with the earth and organic forms inspired him to investigate clay. His journey began early in junior high school and continued into senior high school where he won numerous awards for his ceramic work. He earned a full scholarship from CCS and graduated with honors in 1993. Since Suidan’s career started more than 15 years ago in his small basement studio, he has grown as an artist and businessman. In 2004, he was accepted into The International Exposition of Sculpture Objects & Functional Art in Chicago. Currently, Suidan owns his own commercial building, which is home to his studio and gallery space.

His passion for clay continues as he looks for his own next step in life and his journey through the arts.

LAURIE TENNENT ’83, PHOTOGRAPHY OVERVIEW

For over 30 years, Laurie Tennent has been faithfully making photographs of flowers. Her clinical approach is unaffected by adornment or artifice, owing more to the pioneers of botanical illustration than to the orchestration of the material. The consistency of her oeuvre is striking. The large scale of her photographs, the science of digital photography and the dispassionate impartiality of the manner of the capture of her images engender an extreme level of intimacy and realism in these works. Her quasi-scientific pictures scan the surface textures of the foreground like a satellite mapping territory.

Glenn Triest is a commercial and editorial photographer based in Ferndale, Michigan. Triest works for national magazines as well as corporate clients worldwide. He has specialized in portraiture with an emphasis on the human condition. His 35 years of work have included stories of Detroit and its people, ranging in subject from politics, healthcare, housing, mental health, business and music.

Triest is a frequent volunteer for homeless and mental health groups. He’s the founder of Imprint Press, a not-for-profit photo materials project to aid in fundraising efforts for non-profits. “1980s Detroit Portfolio” is part of a never before printed or distributed, 50-image, black-andwhite portfolio from 1978 – 1990, in Detroit, Michigan.

Leah Waldo is drawn to the contrast existing within the human construct of internal monologue within exterior structures. Her current work adopts the inherent qualities found within her chosen material: cast glass, hand-built clay forms, fabricated steel and cast bronze elements.

These materials provide diverse qualities that create a juxtaposing support system, each needing the other to come to life. The forms are simplified to their essential nature while joinery and fasteners are used to bridge and connect. Her work attempts to weave an abstract narrative into the interplay of material and form, touching upon universal concepts within us all.

Detroit-based artist, Joshua Wojick, reaches far outside of conventional glassblowing to lend a new perspective and insight on the material and process. His use of the material truly expresses the full spectrum of what glass can be. Earning his BFA from the College for Creative Studies and a MFA in Sculpture from Eastern Michigan University, Joshua has worked with glass since 1998.

He is currently the Crafts Program Manager at The Henry Ford Museum, as well as a former faculty member at CCS. He is represented nationally and his work is held in private collections internationally.

Bill Harlan’s Harlan Estate is one of just a few California wines that are equal to Grand Cru status.

According to Robert Parker, “Harlan Estate might be the single most profound red wine made not just in California, but in the world.” The cashmere-like palate of the 2005 Harlan is saturated, layered, sensual and lush, echoing the gorgeous aromas of cassis, black raspberries, mocha, licorice, toasted nuts, mineral and sage, carrying through to the decadent, black raspberry finish. The wine is soft, smooth and refined, yet complex and powerful.

It should evolve beautifully for another 30 years.

Founded in 1984 in the western hills of Oakville, the heart of Napa Valley, Bill Harlan planned to create a California equivalent of a Bordeaux First Growth. Thanks to location, terroir and the talents of the winemaking team, Harlan wines have earned their supreme cult status, commanding global praise. Lou Kapcsandy, who fled Hungary in the 1950s, acquired 20 acres in 2000, producing his first vintage in 2004. The State Lane Vineyard is a historic site inside the Silverado Trail in Yountville, noted for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 Cabernet is seamless, elegant and polished, a model of finesse, with a beguiling bouquet of mint, flowers, spice and licorice, followed by endless layers of dense, full, concentrated aromas and flavors of currant, dark berry, earth, sage, cedar and light toast for a beautifully delineated package. Powerful, racy and sumptuous, the 2015 Harlan, bottled in early 2018, is still unfurling its exquisite characteristics reaffirming the global praise Harlan has received for over two decades of fireworks. Deep garnet-purple in color, a beautiful bouquet of dark cherry, black currant, boysenberry, plum and dark fig is accented with garrigue, wild sage, espresso, licorice, mocha, spice and tobacco, in a framework of bittersweet chocolate.

The wine is rich, dense, elegant, full and concentrated, with fantastic depth, complexity, fine-grained and ripe tannins, culminating in a long, decadent and fleshy finish. Cellaring will greatly enhance this California First Growth.

The Valdicava Brunello shows a great balance of body and aroma. It shows a big earthy nose followed by layers of packed sweet, dark fruit, accented by licorice, smoke, leather and spice in a dense, structured, intense and concentrated framework.

This wine estate is known for producing outstanding expressions of the opulent Sangiovese grape.

The Brunello Riserva from Tornesi, the product of traditional winemaking, has acidic backbone and intense aromatics but also ripeness and body.

The lovely aromas and flavors offer up swirls of blueberry pie, laced with vanilla, flowers, minerals, cedar, raisin and prune. The wine is fresh, thick, chewy, refined and long. The Casanova di Neri Brunello from 2014, a blend of fruit from across this estate, is silky, refined, rich, dense and soave.

It reveals notes of bright cherries, wild berries, roses, Asian spice, graphite, cedar, herbs and orange zest in the nose and on the juicy palate, with a long, cherry and spice-tinged finish. The 2015 Felsina Fontalloro is seductive, sensual and alluring, smooth and silky with exceptional finesse. The complex nose and palate feature black cherry, spice, tar, forest floor, wild rose, blackberry, licorice and blueberry wrapped in a sleek and racy package. The 2012 Pertimali Brunello from Sassetti has a great future, showing a complex nose of dried figs, dark fruits, walnuts and dried meats, echoed on the palate. It is fullbodied, dense, structured, refined and bold, with a lovely, flavorful finish.

The 1990 Chateau d’Yquem displays a lovely sweet nose of honeyed tropical fruit, peaches and coconut, with intense spice. It is massive yet vibrant on the palate, with layers of ripe fruit, honey, dried orange peel, caramel, toffee and white chocolate, ending with a finish that goes on and on.

The 1990 Mouton Rothschild is rich, spicy, sweet and full, packed with cedar, black fruits, lead pencil and toasty oak, beautifully made, elegant and stylish.

The 1995 Haut Brion is a seamless, beautifully evolving beauty, offering scents and tastes of sweet cherry, black currant, plum, vanilla, spice, earth and mineral, ending in a finish that lingers on and on.

The 1995 Lafite Rothschild shows a beautiful sweetness of fruit in a tightly knit, pure, well-delineated body, accented with smoke, mineral, cedar, black fruit and spice in nose and mouth.

The 1989 Cos d’Estournel is fragrant, firm, rounded and elegant, with lovely fruit, displaying black cherry, a warm toastiness, spice and a velvety texture. Notes that waft from the glass of the 1989 Leoville-las-Cases are delightful, with roses, dried fruit, raisins and mineral. A mix of rich, dark fruit swirls around the palate, showing blackberries, currants and plums, with hints of mint, cigar smoke, earth and spice.

The wine is complex, muscular, supple and soft, but vigorous and flavorful, with a long, chocolate-tinged finish. The 1989 Pichon Lalande shows the hallmark purity and elegance of this estate. The nose of aromatic intensity is intermixed with vanilla, graphite, flowers, sweet red and black fruit, and black tea, all blossoming from the glass. The palate echoes the nose with added notes of tobacco, cedar, incense, sweet plum, spice, coffee bean, smoke and toasty oak, ending in a long, refined, complex finish. The elegant 1995 Carruades de Lafite shows an impressive nose, with good depth of dark fruit, notes of forest floor, earth and cigar, with rounding tannins, ending in a minerally finish. The 1995 Lynch Bages is elegant, soft, fleshy, round and seductive with scents and tastes of sweet, smoky, earthy, black currant fruit, etched with spice, herbs and oak finishing long. The 1997 Gruaud Larose is soft and fleshy, loaded with olive and licorice-tinged black cherry and cassis fruit, laced with smoke, leather and spice, rich, complex and savory.

Chateau d’Yquems from 1997, 2005 and 2008 as well as the 2007 Ygrec ‘Y’ are vivacious, racy, exciting and energetic, offering the bold, hedonistic profiles of their vintages. Still young, showy and opulent, these wines can last for 50 years, turning complex, rich and deeply honeyed as they age. The 1997, a sensational Yquem, one of the estate’s finest efforts in the last three decades, is gorgeously perfumed with caramel, honeysuckle, peach, apricot, smoke and spice. It is full-bodied, rich, forward, deep and complex, velvety textured and vibrant, with a lively underlying acidity, packed with sweetness and glycerin, finishing with a bright, rich, fruit-laden aftertaste. This is another possibly 50-year wine.

Rich and heady aromatics of the 2005 are intense and glorious, brimming with flowers, honey, sandalwood, apple tart and dried pineapple, laced with white pepper and ginger. The unctuous palate, wonderfully rich and concentrated with velvety textured botrytized fruit, etched in spice, showing added notes of marzipan and fresh, pure honeyed fruit, peach, pear and apricot, ending in a persistent, super-nuanced finish that hints of white chocolate, crème brûlée and honey. The 2007 Ygrec ‘Y’ features a lovely nose of apple blossom, pink grapefruit, lemon and granite. It is precisely defined, bright and lively with loads of energy packed into it, segueing to a delightful palate of green apple, lemongrass, mixed citrus and spice. The wine is harmonious, smooth and rich, oozing with charm, culminating in a long, lingering, exciting finish. The 2008 Yquem displays rich, intense fruit, elegant and poised, with a great balance between sugar and acidity that imparts a lovely lift to the wine’s core of concentrated botrytis, auguring well for long-term aging. Aromas and flavors of apricot, mandarin, tropical fruit, sweet oak, toasted nuts, yeast, lemon tart and spice are compelling, sumptuous and decadent, with a racy backbone, ending in a long, layered, coconut/lemon cream finish.

The 2012 Barolo Cannubi from Einaudi shows bright fruit intensity, aromatic complexity, elegance and silky tannins, with layers of wild berries, herbs, licorice, toffee, spice, mushrooms, plums, roses, currants, cherries, leather and tobacco.

The 2013 Barolo Bussia from Prunotto is powerful, full-bodied and structured, yet supple and richly textured, redolent of cherries, berries, flowers, spice, chocolate, mushrooms and herbs, with substantial tannins, ending in a long, pure, fresh finish.

From these early days, Tom went into the distribution and selling of beer and wine in the Metro Detroit area working for his father. Together they grew their company, Action Distributors, into one of the largest Miller Beer distributors in the U.S. It was then that he discovered the public’s passion for trying the new California wines, although not at the time respected as worthy competitors to the classic French and Italian vintages. In 1983, he began to seriously collect wine, even traveling to Europe to visit vineyards. His passion for fine wine was deepening.

Fisher Vineyards was founded in 1873 when Fred and Juelle Fisher purchased 100 acres in the Mayacamas Mountains on the western slopes of Spring Mountain and built a winery tucked in among the vines and Douglas firs.

The winery itself is a product of the estate, having been built from timber that was cut and milled on-site and crafted into an award-winning facility by their good friend and architect, William Turnbull. Fred and Juelle Fisher served as Featured Vintners of the 1995 Detroit International Wine Auction, and the Fisher children, who are all involved in Fisher Vineyards, served in the same capacity 11 years later in 2016. Whitney Fisher is Winemaker, Robert is General Manager, and Cameron directs Sales and Marketing.

The 2012 Fisher Cabernet Sauvignon Mountain Estate displays blue fruit, graphite, dark raspberry, game, smoke, tobacco, leather, incense, mint and cedar in a dense, concentrated wine with a super finish. The 2013 Whitney’s Vineyard Chardonnay, named after the Fisher’s first born daughter, displays a mélange of pears, apples, nutmeg, honey and vanilla in the nose and on the silky, creamy palate, harmonious and long. Coach Insignia represents the pinnacle of Fisher’s winemakers craft, a full-bodied wine from Bordeaux varietals grown in three distinct vineyards. The 2012 is delicious, lush and open packed with black currants, tobacco, cedar, open, dark red cherry, plum, spice and leather.

Meticulous attention to details in terroir along with respect for tradition and modernity is evident in these Italian wines of impeccable quality. Luigi Pira is a new Piedmont superstar producing wines of extraordinary complexity and richness from three of the most prestigious crus in the Serralunga commune: Marcenca, Margeria and Rionda. The Pira Barolo features elements of berries, vanilla, chocolate, herbs, menthol, juniper, eucalyptus and ripe cherries in the nose and mouth, with added notes of oak and underbrush in the extended finish. The Luigi Scavino Barolo offers a focused intensity with a pretty array of dark fruit, cherries, currants and blueberries, nuanced with smoke tobacco, tar, black olives and spice. Produced from old vines, with low-yielding grapes, the quality is impeccable. The outstanding Clerico Barolo, the result of great attention to detail and dedication, is a rich, aromatic, single-vineyard wine, redolent of flowers, cherries, red berries and plums, etched with mint, licorice, tobacco and tea. It is full-bodied, fruity, flavorful and energetic, loaded with charm, ending in a long, persistent finish. This Silvio Grasso Barolo offers aromas of plum, prune and bark that segue to rose petals, cinnamon, truffle, tar, tobacco, dark berry, and subtle herbs and raisins.

The wine is full, chewy, powerful and concentrated yet elegant. It’s no surprise that Silvio Grasso Barolos frequently earn the top rating of three glasses from Gambero Rosso. For fruit intensity that is suave and elegant, the Revello Barolo from Rocche dell’Annunziata, one of Barolo’s prized vineyards, is a not-to-be missed. The rose-scented nose, etched with raspberries, flowers, citrus peel, tea and hay, is echoed on the palate. It is full, firm, dense and concentrated, with a silky texture, velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. This wine has the making of a Vigna Grande (Grand Cru). The Paolo Scavino Barolo, elegant, structured, layered and nuanced, with its bright acidity and firm tannins, could age gloriously for over two decades. The 2001 Gaja Costa Russi has a captivating and refined nose of blackberries, violets, roasted coffee beans, vanilla and toast, leading to a palate of bright cherry and raspberry fruit. It is elegant, complex, densely woven, with a caressing texture, the most accessible of Gaja’s single-vineyard wines. The 2001 Gaja Darmagi offers very Cabernet aromas of cassis, licorice, smoked meat and game laced with truffle, pepper, mint, sage, black cherry and chocolate. It is beautifully balanced, with great depth and complexity, integrated tannins and an exotic finish. The 2001 Gaja Conteisa is powerful, complex and very aromatic, fruity, focused, balanced, rounded and rich, with aromas and flavors of floral-etched dark cherry jam, smoke, mineral, earth, graphite, espresso and spicy oak. The 2001 Gaja Sori Tilden shows a brilliant personality, charming and seductive, energetic and elegant.

Scents and tastes reveal sweet red fruit, rose petals, mint and spice ending in a long, red berry-infused finish. The 2001 Gaja Sperss reveals a powerful, muscular, brooding personality, hinting of tobacco, mint, crushed flowers, leather and dark fruit. It is big, full-bodied dense and concentrated with layers of flavor that build to an explosive finish. The 2001 Gaja Sori San Lorenzo, the deepest and darkest of Gaja’s single-vineyard wines, powerful, focused, seductive and racy. The highly concentrated aromas and flavors of black cherry fruit hint of coffee, fine herbs, minerals, berries, cedar, tobacco and exotic spice, extending through the long, lingering finish.

Description This cuvée comes exclusively from terroirs located within the oceanic climates of Limoux. Code Rouge is an ode to excellence and a tribute to the world’s first sparkling wine, made by the monks of Saint-Hilaire Abbey near Limoux.

A Blanc de blancs made with Chardonnay, Chenin and Mauzac, this wine of great finesse and elegance typifies the terroir which nurtures it. This Cuvée has all the traditional features of Gérard Bertrand’s wines: the emblematic red color of the bottle and the Alpha and Omega symbols, symbolizing the endless cycle of nature which inspired its name Brut Eternel.

Vinification and Maturing The grapes are harvested manually and then transported in harvesting bins.

Direct pressing is performed with a pneumatic press, which allows us to eliminate 30% to 40% of the press juice by extraction without re-pressing.

Very carefully, the juice is allowed to settle, then alcoholic fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 18°C. Malolactic fermentation may be carried out depending on the vintage. A meticulous blend of the various terroirs and grape varieties is carried out with bottling throughout January to encourage bottle fermentation. It is aged on a lath for a minimum of 36 months.

Tasting Notes It has a very pale, almost crystalline color, with fine bubbles. The bouquet is floral with notes of pear, citrus fruits and fresh fruits. This wine is fresh and mineral on the palate. Code Rouge is fine, elegant and refined. Serve as an aperitif, with sushis, or fishes with creamy sauce, goat’s cheese and fresh fruit salads with basil.

BALLERINE BRUT ETOILE ROSÉ WINE FACTS

Grape Varieties: Blend of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Description Ballerine evokes the elegance and the grace of this cuvee. Limoux terroir, where the first sparkling was born in Saint-Hilaire Abbey (1531) is an Altitude vineyard, with a combination of the Mediterranean influences with the proximity of the Pyrenean Mountains. The wine, from high altitude vineyards close to the Pyrenean Mountains, evokes an exhilarating sense of aerial emotion upon tasting. Both winemaking and blending of the Ballerine are choreographed to emphasize the freshness, the tension, and lightness, reminiscent of a prima ballerina.

This Brut is named Etoile in reference of the star dance of the Paris ballet.

The shape of the label refers to the tip of a dance slipper.

Vinification and Maturing This Crémant is a blend of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vinified in red.

Grapes are harvested at dawn to protect the freshness of berries and avoid the phenomena of oxidation. After the arrival in the cellar, the white grapes are delicately pressed so as to preserve only the most qualitative juices.

Musts are then transferred in thermo-regulated stainless tanks for a settling in the cold. The alcoholic fermentation spreads out on about 10 days between 16°C and 18°C. Wines are then blended with the Pinot Noir converted into wine in red. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine is bottled for an aging on laths of 36 months. Before the draining, a riddling of several weeks is made.

Tasting Notes The delicate pale rosé color is inspired by the sunset as seen in of Paris Opera rooftop. The delicate bubbles confer to this Crémant a persistent foam. The nose, powerful and vibrant, reveals subtle and intense aromas, we perceive notes of red berries and white flowers. The attack in mouth is precise and elegant, the aromas are of a big complexity. Brioche-like notes get involved in the fruity notes of strawberry and raspberry. The finale persists on soft and creamy notes.

2018 GRIS BLANC ROSÉ WINE FACTS

Grape Varieties: Mainly Grenache

Description The vines are ideally located in Tautavel area, between Mediterranean sea and Pyrenees Mountains, 30 km north to Perpignan in the South of France area.

Grenache is the king of grape varieties when it comes to making light, racy, fruity rosés in contemporary style. The dry and sunny terroir enables Grenache, the emblematic grape variety of the Mediterranean, to express its best aromas.

Vinification and Maturing The grapes are picked by hand and pressed directly. All the handling operations are carried out in a carbon dioxide atmosphere to protect the delicate aromas of the Grenache grapes until the start of fermentation, which is carried out at low temperatures (from 15°C to 18°C). The wine is matured on the fine lees for several weeks before bottling.

Tasting Notes An original rosé with a very pale pink color plus gray and whitish tints. The bouquet reveals delightful red berry scents. A slight sparkle on the palate gives the wine all its freshness and brings out its fruit to the fullest. The elegant finish is pleasantly fresh and minerally. To be savored at 10°C to 12°C as an aperitif, with seafood, Mediterranean-style salads, Asian dishes, baked fish and spicy and stronger-tasting dishes such as Thai curries or tajines.

2018 PERLES DE SAUVIGNON BLANC WINE FACTS

Grape Varieties: Exclusively Sauvignon Blanc

Description The South of France and especially the area around the Mediterranean coasts, is famous for its oysters and its vineyards. Perles de Sauvignon Blanc pays tribute to this region and to the pearls that can be found in the oysters.

The wine is made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc, which is an emblematic grape from the South of France and goes perfectly well with oysters and grilled fish. The glass stopper with a blue color evokes the Mediterranean coast, the cradle of this wine. The bottle, wearing its pearl necklace, is a unique model in the world imagined by the designer Chanteal Thomass, a well-known French Designer.

Vinification and Maturing Sauvignon grapes ripen very early and need to be picked at a precise time, determined by tasting the fruit before harvesting, in order to obtain the full intensity that is characteristic of this grape variety. The grapes are picked during the night to preserve the freshness of the fruit. They are delicately pressed upon arrival at the winery. Around 10% of the wine is vinified in French oak barrels for approximately five months, while the rest is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats at a cool temperature to preserve the fullness and freshness of the flavors. After light fining, bottling takes place fairly early on to preserve the wine’s fresh, fruity character.

Tasting Notes The Sauvignon is characterized by its attractive citrus, and sometimes menthol, aromas and is nicely rounded on the palate. The aging of a part of the wine in oak barrels gives structure and length in mouth.

2018 CAP INSULA RED BLEND WINE FACTS

Grape Varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre

Description At the gateway to the city of Narbonne, the Massif de la Clape was once an island known as “Insula Laci.” Surrounded by vineyards and standing on a magnificent limestone terroir overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Cap Insula is set on the tip of what used to be this island’s lagoon. Forming a link with the rich history of the region, Cap Insula is an eco-designed winery made with natural materials, and a spearhead of an environmentally friendly form of viticulture.

Vinification and Maturing A slow ripening process and late harvesting (end September to mid-October) are the secrets to achieving ripe, healthy, concentrated grapes. They also encourage good extraction of the color and aromas during the fermentation and maceration phases. The grapes are harvested by hand and taken to the winery in trays, then de-stemmed and placed in stainless-steel vats for maceration lasting 20 to 25 days. The wines are then racked and transferred to barrels for eight months.

Tasting Notes Cap Insula red offers wonderful aromas of ripe summer fruits and is very rounded on the palate, developing toward the long-lasting mineral finish so characteristic of this appellation.

Serve at 18°C with grilled red meat, pan-fried mushrooms or mature cheese.

Grape Varieties: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier and Vermentino

Description The Château la Sauvageonne is a child of fire. Its climate is one of the extremes, with days scorched by the sun and nights cooled by the effects of altitude (500 – 1150ft), with currents of cool air that descend from the Larzac plateau. Nature at La Sauvageonne is as wild as it is generous. This diversity made it possible to plant each grape variety; red, pink, or white, in the type of soil that permits its most beautiful expression. Great thermal amplitude in summer slows grape ripening, guaranteeing remarkable aromatic precision in the wines. Each variety has its own repertoire of harmonies, which enables us to compose audacious blends in which the virtuosity of their expression is its zenith, resulting in wines that are disarming, sensual and elegant.

Vinification and Maturing The grapes are handpicked between sunrise and 10 a.m., in order to take advantage of the berries’ freshness. Grenache and Mourvèdre come from plots of old vines on hillsides producing small berries with low yield.

Vermentino and Viognier are cultivated on the schist hillsides. The Grenache is co-fermented with the Vermentino and the Viognier. It’s this unique and rare blend that gives this wine its entire singularity. The full bunches of grapes are pressed directly at reception in the wine storehouses. Only the free run juice and the first press are used to elaborate this cuvée. After a cold setting, the fermentations begin in vats and will end in barrels.

Tasting Notes The first impression this wine delivers is the surprising one of relating more to a white than a rosé. The bouquet offers up notes of crushed strawberries, sweet spices, very floral notes of violet and hawthorn. The mouth is very powerful and generous, the grain is velvety and with a revitalizing freshness.

The wine is built on tension and stamped with a brilliant salinity. To be served at 12°C – 13°C with fishes, poultry or fresh cheeses.

Each variety has its own repertoire of harmonies, which enables us to compose audacious blends in which the virtuosity of their expression is its zenith, resulting in wines that are disarming, sensual and elegant. The red Grand Vin reconciles the heart and spirit of Grenache Noir, offered by its expressions from schist and ruffes terroirs, with smaller proportions of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan. This fusion of different and complementary terroirs creates incomparable aromatic complexity and silkiness of texture.

Vinification and Maturing The harvest began with ripeness tests, analysis of the grapes’ polyphenol content and daily tasting as they reached peak maturity. Harvesting ripe, healthy fruit is the best way to guarantee the superior quality of the wines we produce. The grapes are picked by hand, and carried to the winery in special grape bins within an hour of leaving the vine. The grapes are sorted and de-stemmed before being transferred to thermo-regulated vats. Each grape variety is processed separately. Maceration lasts for around 20-25 days.

At the end of the winter the wines are transferred to new, 225–liter oak barrels and left to mature for 12 to 16 months.

Tasting Notes Ruby robe with great radiance and flashes of tile-red. A nose packed with typical garrigue aromas, and hints of fruit preserves and spices. Subtle hints of dark berries and gingerbread. On the palate is cuvée boasts elegant, fine-grained tannins which help maintain a superb balance of freshness and maturity. Ready to drink now, and will continue to mature over the next few years. Perfect with grilled meats and authentic Languedoc specialties such as Larzac cheeses.

2017 CIGALUS ROUGE WINE FACTS

Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Caladoc, Carignan

Description Gérard Bertrand and his family live at Domaine de Cigalus. With the assistance of Gilles de Baudus and Richard Planas, the estate has been farmed using biodynamic practices, a sort of homeopathy of the earth, since 2002.

Fifteen years after its conversion, Cigalus produces wines that each assert an individual personality with immeasurable elegance.

Cradled in a secluded valley of the Corbières, in the terroir of Fontfroide (or “cold springs”), Domaine de Cigalus derives all the benefits of the tempering influences of this very special environment, allowing a great liberty in the selection of grapes, from the most precocious to the latest maturing varieties.

Vinification and Maturing The vineyard is managed according to the biodynamic system where the energy of the soil lies at the heart of the process. All the work in the vineyard and in the cellars is driven by a calendar based on two celestial objects: the moon and the sun. The vines are thus in equilibrium with the soil and are therefore able to give full expression of our terroir in the resultant wines.

The grapes are picked by hand in early October once they have reached optimum maturity (supple to the touch, the juice runs colored, not clear, and the pips no longer taste bitter). The bunches are carefully placed whole in small wooden crates to preserve their perfect condition and avoid any natural crushing. The Syrah and Carignan are vinified separately in full grapes with a carbonic maceration. The other varietals are de-stemmed and vinified in the traditional way for 20 days at a controlled temperature. Once the fermentation is completed, the varieties are placed in 225–liters new French oak barrels for 12 months.

Tasting Notes Intense ruby color with a mahogany hue. First the bouquet shouts concentrated, very ripe black fruit. After a little time in the glass, more complexity with grilled spice and toasted oak unfolds. The palate is lush and opulent with velvety tannins. The aromas of black fruit — blackberries, black cherries and plums — reappear with a complex empyreumatic web leading into mint. The finish is long with a perfect balance.
