A celebration of nature, wildlife and learning. Cranefest is an annual festival in Michigan where people gather to watch migrating sandhill cranes land in local bird sanctuaries. The event gathers communities to celebrate nature and wildlife, and to teach people about habitat conservation. These posters are designed to capture and re-brand the event with a new identity that communicates the festival’s goals and message. Each poster can stand alone, but together they tell the story of migration and change.

D E AR FRIE N DS O F CCS

Welcome to the 37th Detroit International Wine Auction benefiting the College for Creative Studies. I want to thank Chairs Dave and Peggy Meador and the Leadership Committee for making this year’s event an unforgettable experience. The DTE Energy team’s commitment has been extraordinary under the fantastic leadership of Dave and Peggy. It is so exciting to be in Beacon Park, and once again experience the revitalization of Detroit by celebrating in another one of the city’s beautiful parks. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Craig Hall, Vintner, Hall Wines, our Featured Vintner for this evening. Craig, along with his wife Kathryn acquired the historic property in 2003 and opened the first of their two beautiful winemaking facilities in Napa Valley. As lifelong art collectors, Craig and Kathryn believe art nourishes the human spirit and can make a profound difference in people’s lives, and I couldn’t agree more. My thanks to Lear Corporation for its Presenting Sponsorship and longstanding significant partnership with the College and its students, and General Motors, which is once again our Lead Sponsor and continues its legacy of support for the school from which it recruits so many talented designers. This event has grown to be one of the largest wine auctions in the country. You, our donors, have made this happen through your generosity and your commitment to advancing the creative spirit in Detroit. Scholarship support is the number-one need of the College; 98 percent of our students receive some sort of financial aid, and your gifts allow the College to nurture and enrich the talent of promising artists from metro Detroit and around the world. This evening is a celebration of creativity, generosity and support for an outstanding institution. Tonight, savor the fine wines, unique setting, and please, raise your paddles in support of this outstanding institution. On behalf of the College for Creative Studies Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and, most importantly, the students, I thank you.

Sincerely,

Keith E. Crain Chair

T H E C OL L E GE F OR C R E AT I V E ST U DI E S S A LU T E S P R E SI DE N T RO GE R S ON 2 5 Y E A R S OF SE RV IC E Beginning his 25th year leading the College for Creative Studies, President Richard L. Rogers has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2019. During Rogers’ tenure the College experienced a major transformation to become one of the foremost art and design colleges in the world, ranked the number three design school in the U.S. by LinkedIn. Enrollment has doubled with the addition of seven new undergraduate degree programs and the College’s first graduate programs. Numerous student service functions were added to improve the student experience. The endowment increased from $6 million to over $80 million, thanks in part to a $50 million bequest from Josephine F. Ford, the largest gift ever made to a private art and design college. To commemorate Rogers’ quarter century at CCS, Arietta, under the direction of Proprietor Fritz Hatton, has designed a tribute offering of Library Magnums of Arietta 2007 Red Wine Variation One with a special “Tribute to Rick Rogers — 25 Years at CCS” label for auction at tonight’s event.

I T A L L BE GA N W I T H A B O T T L E OF C A BE R N E T In 1982, Michael Fielding and Joe Beyer, proprietor of landmark Detroit bistro Pontchartrain Wine Cellars, realized their dream of creating a world-class charitable wine auction. The first Detroit International Wine Auction (DIWA) raised $40,000 for the Detroit Community Music School. By the end of the auction’s first decade, that number had quadrupled. DIWA, known for pouring premiere vintages, had become one of the top three wine auctions in the country, benefiting the Institute of Music and Dance at what was then the Center for Creative Studies. Michael Fielding, who had been a senior partner at Price Waterhouse Coopers, an ardent philanthropist as well as a lover of music and fine wine, died on May 3, 2018. But his determination — to create a successful international wine auction and to support communities through charitable giving — has evolved into one of the top wine auctions in the United States and the largest in the Midwest. DIWA has continued to evolve and is now the College for Creative Studies’ largest annual fundraiser. In 2017, the auction raised $3.6 million and to date has raised $33.2 million for undergraduate scholarships and free art programs through the College’s Community Arts Partnerships. Pretty impressive for an idea that began as a conversation between friends sharing a bottle of ’76 Mondavi.

AUCTION LEADERSHIP AND HISTORY

F R I T Z H AT T O N Proprietor, Arietta Winery

Fritz Hatton and his immediate family own Arietta, one of Napa’s top producers of Bordeaux-style blended wines. He is also the nation’s most experienced wine auctioneer, having begun his career in Christie’s Wine Department in 1980. After a 12-year management career for Christie’s in North America and the Far East, Hatton took a musical sabbatical on the West Coast in the early 1990s, and conducted his first auction for the Napa Valley Vintners in 1992. Out of his musical and wine country experiences with his winemaker friend John Kongsgaard emerged a wine brand with a musically inspired name: Arietta. In 1995 Hatton headed to Christie’s New York to serve as Director of Christie’s U.S. Wine Auction Department. In 1998, he returned to California to launch Arietta with his wife, Caren. He remained with Christie’s as Consultant and Principal Wine Auctioneer before joining Zachys Wine Auctions in 2002. He continues to conduct all commercial wine auctions for Zachys, as well as numerous charity wine auctions nationwide, in addition to overseeing the production and sales of Arietta. Fritz and Caren Hatton reside in Napa, California, with their two daughters, Libby and Hattie. A native of Michigan, Hatton is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and a summa cum laude graduate of Yale with a degree in English Literature. He returned to Yale as one of the first students to enroll in the Yale School of Organization and Management, from which he received an MBA in 1979. Apart from family and wine, his major interest is classical music, and he is just as happy playing the piano as he is encouraging bidders to turn cash into collectible wine. This is Fritz Hatton’s 17th time serving as auctioneer for the Detroit International Wine Auction, and we welcome him back!

Donated by Wyland A moon rise illuminates a breaching humpback whale in this powerful original painting by marine life artist Wyland. Wyland encountered this scene on a still evening as his small boat drifted silently over calm waters. “We were amazed when a forty-ton humpback whale suddenly hefted its entire body towards the heavens,” he said. “It seemed to hang there frozen in time. I wanted to hold that moment forever. Lunar Celebration is my way of capturing the incredible power and grace of these acrobatic leviathans.” Wyland is one of America’s unique creative influences and a leading advocate for marine resource conservation. He attended CCS in the 1970s and has maintained a relationship with the College over the years. In 2006, CCS awarded him an honorary doctorate. The Wyland Foundation has awarded a scholarship to a CCS student who attended Lamphere High School where Wyland also attended. Included in this lot is a wine bottle that is considered an art piece as the organic wine inside is not consumable.

“Young Creatures” is a mixed media and collage painting that was inspired by Guy de Maupassant’s short story, “The Diamond Necklace.” This piece explores the age-old relationship between happiness and wealth by juxtaposing despair with luxurious icons, textures and colors. This combination of unexpected visual metaphors within a surrealist space thus acts as a unique marriage: tragedy and romance, past and present, real and imagined.

This project was completed during an internship at Adidas on the U.S. Sports team. With Adidas’ new focus on the North American market, the focus was on America’s most popular sport: FOOTBALL. The NFL Combine and the 40-Yard Dash is where footwear technology is pushed the furthest. Rather than using a traditional shoe last, a foot-scanning technology, generative design and 3D printing techniques were used to give Adidas athletes the best fit when competing for the best time.

The aesthetic impact and the visceral response of the viewer are imperative in that the viewer should be seduced by the object. The paradigm of these questions help reconnect the naïve imagination.

The Arietta Red Wine Variation One 2007 is the most “creative” in the Arietta portfolio, an unusual and highly distinctive blend of Syrah and Merlot first made by Arietta’s co-founder and original winemaker John Kongsgaard in the 2000 vintage. The 2007 vintage was unquestionably the greatest Napa vintage of the last decade, and the Variation One can be enjoyed for another 15 years at least. These magnums carry the additional label “Tribute to Rick Rogers — 25 Years at CCS.” Bidders may signal for one or more magnums, even the whole lot. The auctioneer will raise the price if demand exceeds supply. Here’s to Rick! Arietta, the Napa winery owned by Fritz and Caren Hatton, specializing in Bordeaux-style blends, has, over the last two decades, assembled a portfolio of extraordinary micro blocks in the cooler climates of Napa Valley, farmed under the supervision of noted winemaker, Andy Erickson. The 2007 Arietta Red Wine Variation One, a distinctive and dynamic marriage of opposites, is a co-fermented blend of 55% syrah and 45% Merlot from the finest fines on the Hudson Ranch. Robert Parker wrote, “A sensational effort, the 2007 Variation One displays a vivid, super fragrant perfume of bouquet garni, white chocolate, blackberries, plums and subtle smoky oak. Full-bodied with silky tannins, a decadent opulence and a sumptuous texture, this is a head-turning, full-bodied, expressive wine to enjoy over the next 15 – 20 years.”

In 1999 Aubert Vineyard was born and has been crafting outstanding vineyard-designate Chardonnays and Pinots from estate and leased vineyards in the Russian River Valley and on the Sonoma Coast in full-blown, hedonistic style. His wines are among those most highly sought after in California. The CIX Estate Chardonnay, from the Montrachet clone, is dense, rich and plush with a strong core of fruit and exciting aromatics and flavors, redolent of stones, quince, honeysuckle, caramelized citrus and tropical fruit, with upfront intensity, plenty of power and an endless finish. The Eastside Chardonnay, also planted from a Montrachet clone, features superb aromatics and chiseled fruit, smoky creme brulee notes intermingled with white peach, nectarine, orange marmalade, honeysuckle, buttered apples, fig and toasty oak, all of which jump from the glass, leaving a persistent aftertaste.

GALA DINNER LIVE AUCTION

Donated by Friends of CCS The world’s greatest sweet wine, the King of Sauternes, Chateau d’Yquem, is one of the few luxury-priced wines that merits its stratospheric price tag. At Yquem, they proclaim that only one glass of wine per vine is produced, and it shows. Yquem, a Superior First Growth, was the only Sauternes given this rating, in the Bordeaux classification of 1855, indicating its superiority over all the other wines of its type. Its success stems largely from the site’s susceptibility to attack by noble rot. The wine is characterized by complexity, concentration, sweetness, relatively high acidity and longevity. With proper care, a bottle will keep for a century or more. The 1990 Chateau d’Yquem, an extraordinary effort, given 99 points by Robert Parker, calling it “one of the richest Yquems ever tasted with 50 – 100 years of potential longevity.” The wine is rich, opulent, fabulously superb, elegant and finesseful, revealing a honeyed, oaky, flowery tropical fruit bouquet. The massive palate shows peaches, coconut, apricots, subtle toasty oak, dried orange peel and layers of intensely rip botrytis-tinged, sweet fruit that is powerful, seamless and harmonious, with well-integrated acidity. Anticipated maturity is 2050+.

In 2005, Mike retired from pediatric dentistry and, with Paul Hobbs, purchased the first available crop, completing their 10th harvest with the 2012 vintage. In addition to world-class 100% varietal bottlings of Cabernet and Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Grenache are also produced from the 42-acre estate. Kathy and Frank Dotzler acquired the property in 2003, also purchasing a 20-acre site on Howell Mountain, the 9-acre True Vineyard, planted with Bordeaux varietals. This year the property was sold to its third owners, the French-based AXA Millesimes.

While Fifth Growth in status, Lynch-Bages has often produced wines equivalent to a Second and even a First Growth. The 1970, made in an older style prior to the acquisition of the estate by Jean-Michel Cazes, shows intense aromas and flavors of black currant, prune, licorice, cedar, tobacco and leather, in a spicy, concentrated package. The 1985 is sexy and exciting, a forerunner for the brilliant 1989 and 1990, with ripe berry, cherry and currant fruit, tinged with coffee, leather and dried herbs. It has layers of silky tannins and is rich, round and peppery on the long finish. The 1986 is big and weighty, with black currant, edged with earth, leather, oak and cedar. The 1988 is a beautiful, classic Claret, rich, powerful, big and juicy, offering copious black cherry, currant and dark chocolate, hinting of smoke, leather, cigar, earth and black tea. The 1989, arguably a 50-year wine, is lovely, vital, rich, seamless and voluptuous, drinking beautifully after resolution of formidable tannins. The 1994 is gorgeous, nuanced with violet, berry, toasted oak, mineral and black currants, hedonistic in style, ending in a long, caressing finish. The 1996 Lynch-Bages is firmly structured, massive, powerful and tannic, with the classic Pauillac nose of lead pencil, cedar, black currant, sweet cherry, spice and mint, similar flavors, velvety tannins and a long finish. The 1998 is big, full, silky and round, laced with vanilla, strawberry, cherry and currant, ending in a long, caressing finish. The 1999, a seductive wine, is forward, fleshy and full-bodied, with cassis, cedar, licorice, vanilla and spicy herb. It is loaded with charm, lush, balanced and very finesseful. The 2000 Lynch-Bages is delicious, layered, concentrated, with a firm backbone, great depth and mellowed tannins. Aromas and flavors offer blackberry, coffee, cassis, graphite, pen ink, spice, tobacco, cedar, cherry, plum and roasted game, one of the all-time great examples of Lynch-Bages. The 2003 is evolved, dense, silky, full, elegant, balanced, textured and long, showcasing smoke, herb, black currant, licorice, graphite, plum and cigar box.

BECAUSE THERE’S NO QUIT IN YOU. There’s no quit in a patient who runs a marathon after hip replacement. Battles back after open-heart surgery. Or overcomes a stroke. People who never quit deserve a health care system with the same philosophy. That’s Beaumont. Thousands of medical minds working together as one—for one reason: you. Talk to a Beaumont Doctor. This 3D rendering was created as an exploration of texture and lighting, drawing from an artist inspiration to create things that are reality-adjacent. Similar to life and not quite idealized, but also different, the way a mind remembers things after time has passed.
