Theory

The material and social foundations of the world are currently experiencing a massive shift. As old patterns of being and working begin to deconstruct, there arises an immenint need to envision new futures. Creative practitioners across a vast array of fields are being tasked with examining and rethinking the fundamental building blocks of local and global systems. Situated on the precipice of renewed perception, the expansive properties of color ask to be reconsidered and repurposed.

How can artists and designers today utilize color to expand our collective capacity for equity, unity, and innovation within ourselves and our environment?

Psychology

Beneath the materials and symbols of human experience lies the quiet psychological workings of color. Deeply interwoven within fields of color theory and aesthetics, color psychology offers itself as a spacious system of knowledge for creative practitioners in any industry.

Dating back throughout history over thousands of years, humans have explored and documented many hypotheses of how color interacts with our perceptual and lived experiences.

With this accumulation of knowledge, how can the application of color be utilized to envision a future for our world that has yet to materialize?

Visions

Embedded within innumerable cosmologies throughout time, we can find distinct perspectives on the symbolic and psychic applications of color. Artists and other creative visionaries have often been the pioneers of these color discoveries, and consequently have effectively stretched the web of human consciousness in many directions.

From the Upper Paleolithic use of red ochre paint in burial ceremonies to the modern day field of art therapy, color has continually served humanity as a symbolic and spiritual tool in knitting communities together and envisioning new pathways.

How does color currently operate under the dominant cosmologies of modern times? And what will it look like to stretch contemporary understanding of color and create new conceptual horizons?

Forecasting

As the restructuring of our world begins to take place, the consumer landscape has evolved accordingly. Trend forecasting suggests that humans will be looking to surround themselves with colors that can balance out the emotional instability of a world in flux. Similarly, they are projected to prefer purchasing products and supporting brands that are ecologically responsible.

Coupled with growing interest and participation in the wellness industry, these consumer behaviors are right in line with the needs of the natural and social systems around us.

As creative practitioners in design fields, how can we think about the desires and needs of the consumer holistically and respond accordingly with color?
