Dear Reader, School is in full swing, schedules are filling up, and for many families, that means afternoons and evenings are now filled with practices, games, lessons, and activities.

While youth sports certainly offer plenty of physical benefits, there’s so much more happening beyond the field, court, or pool.

In this issue, we’re taking a closer look at the less obvious ways sports can shape our kids. From learning how to handle disappointment and build resilience to developing leadership, confidence, grit, and emotional maturity, the lessons children gain through sports can stay with them long after the season ends.

Each day, 47 families in the United States will hear the words “your child has cancer.”

Childhood cancer may seem too big or too overwhelming to solve. However, researchers are working hard every day to find better treatments and cures for kids fighting cancer—and they’re making progress. Visit childrenscancer.org to learn how you can support the cause and families near you.

National YoungArts Competition. Growth Awareness Week is September 14th–20th.

Height is nature’s early warning signal. Growth can be an overall sign of the health and physical development of a child, but when children aren’t growing properly, it may be an indication of a treatable medical condition. During Growth Awareness Week, The MAGIC Foundation (Major Aspects of Growth in Children) is working to draw attention to the issue of children’s growth.

randparents Day is Sunday, September 13th—but why celebrate for just one day? This September, families are invited to #DoSomethingGrand by making time for the grandparents, grandfriends, grandchildren, and older loved ones who help make our families special.

Grandparents Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate intergenerational connections, create memories, and remind the special people in our lives just how much they mean to us.

And doing something grand doesn’t have to mean planning an elaborate celebration. Sometimes, the simplest moments become the memories families treasure most.

Read a favorite book together. Take a walk through the neighborhood or a favorite park. Look through old family photos and share stories about the people and places in them. Cook a favorite family recipe, work on a craft project or have a family game night. You could even plan a family outing to a restaurant, movie theater, skating rink, hiking trail, or entertainment center.

Can’t be together in person? That’s no problem! Schedule a virtual coffee or lunch date or send a handwritten note with a favorite photo tucked inside. Even a short message can brighten someone’s day and strengthen a family connection.

You can also use Grandparents Day as an opportunity to preserve family stories and traditions. Ask grandparents about their childhood, their favorite memories, or how they met other members of the family. Write down their answers or record the conversation so those stories can be shared with future generations.

If you’re remembering a grandparent or other loved one who is no longer with you, consider gathering as a family to share favorite memories and kind words. Planting a tree or flower together can create a meaningful living reminder of someone who will always be part of your family’s story.

This September, make a little time for the people who have made a big difference. Call. Visit. Cook. Laugh. Share a story. Make a memory. Do Something Grand!

HealthWatch An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare

Safe Sunning: the Good, the Bad, and Tips “Some sun exposure is genuinely good for you,” says Rais Vohra, Medical Director for the Fresno/Madera Division of CPCS. “The key to ensuring you gain the benefits of sunshine without harm is to balance your exposure with sun protection.”

Sunlight exposure (10–15 minutes a few times a week) is the most efficient way for bodies to produce vitamin D (essential for bone health and your immune system). Daylight is key for sleep regulations and quality. The National Institutes of Health advises at least 30 minutes of morning sunlight daily. Time outdoors in the sun can also help prevent nearsightedness in kids says the American Academy of Opthamology. Nearsightedness in children has been increasing, affecting approximately 40% of children age 6–19.

“But too much sun is definitely bad for you,” continues Dr. Vohra, “Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays that damage your skin cells and your eyes. These rays increase your risk of skin cancer, can hurt your eyes, and fast-track skin aging. What’s more, the invisible radiation from the UV rays is always present even on cloudy days and days when you can’t feel the sun, because the rays can pass through haze and clouds.”

7 Tips for Safe Sunning 1. Wear sunscreen daily. Preferably a product of at least 30 SPF that guards against both UVA and UVB rays.

2. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside to all exposed skin, reapply every two hours when outside, and reapply after swimming or sweating.

3. Wear breathable, tightly-woven clothing (especially long pants and long-sleeve shirts) and broad-brimmed hats.

4. Wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays.

5. Never look directly at the sun, you can damage your eyes.

6. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, especially during peak hours—10 a.m.–2 p.m.

7. Stay in the shade.

“Remember, everyone can benefit from sunshine in moderation, but everyone is also at risk for sun damage,” concludes Dr. Vohra.

“So taking steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from too much sun makes sense, even as mindful exposure to it does, too.”

Experts Share Tips to Reduce Migraine Triggers and Support Students The Association of Migraine Disorders (AMD) is highlighting the challenges students with migraine face during the backto-school transition. “The transition back to school can be a particularly challenging time for students with migraine,” said Natalia Zorrilla, a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner and member of AMD’s Advanced Practice Provider Education Committee. “After the more relaxed pace of summer, kids are suddenly faced with early wake-up times, a full day of classes, homework, extracurriculars, and social pressures. This change in schedule and increase in demands can be overwhelming and may trigger migraine attacks. The stress and anxiety that often come with school transitions can also make symptoms worse.”

Migraine affects about 1 in 10 school-aged children. Although headache is the most recognized symptom, migraine can look different in kids—making it easier to overlook. Some kids experience the classic throbbing head pain. Some may primarily complain of stomachaches, nausea, and vomiting.

Other symptoms may include dizziness, tiredness, irritability, paleness, dark under-eye circles, visual aura (seeing spots, colors, kaleidoscope), or sensitivity to light, sound, and smell.

AMD wants to help parents understand that no one trigger will “cause” a migraine attack, but exposure to multiple triggers can increase the risk of an attack. The most common triggers for kids are irregular and inconsistent sleep, dehydration, and changes in eating habits.

Common back-to-school migraine triggers • Earlier morning wake times and less sleep • Prolonged time between meals • Exposure to bright fluorescent lighting and noise • Stress (tests, presentations, bullying, athletic demands, etc.)

How parents and schools can help • Plan ahead: Work with your child and the school to ensure access to water and snacks throughout the day.

• Protect downtime: Avoid overscheduling and leave room for rest or “blank space” in their day.

• Support a healthy sleep routine: Aim for a consistent bedtime and enough hours of rest each night.

• Partner with the school: Share your child’s diagnosis and treatment plan with the school and the school nurse. If needed, request a formal 504 accommodation plan.

• Get medical support: Talk with your child’s provider about lifestyle modifications and treatment options.

Migraine attacks happen. “Give yourself and your child some grace,” said Duggan. “No matter how hard we try to minimize triggers, migraine attacks can occur abruptly, without warning. If a prescribed migraine treatment becomes less effective, discuss it with your child’s healthcare provider. There are other options.”

hen we think of kids playing sports, we usually picture the obvious benefits, such as physical fitness, teamwork, and discipline. But experts say the real magic happens far from stadium lights. Beyond trophies and scoreboards, sports shape children in ways that have little to do with athletic skills and everything to do with emotional growth, brain development, and inner strength.

It turns out that lacing up cleats or diving into a pool doesn’t just build muscle. It builds character. And the rewards often last long after the final whistle. Here's a look at six often-unnoticed ways youth sports benefit kids.

Character-Building in Ways Classrooms Can’t: It's hard to watch as your child misses the winning shot, gets benched, or fouls out of a game. But in that moment of defeat, something quietly remarkable is happening. They’re learning how to sit with disappointment, regulate frustration, and bounce back when things don’t go their way.

All parents want a child with strong character, but this trait is sometimes difficult to teach. Sports offer real-time, emotionallycharged lessons with lasting impact.

"There isn't another youth institution that equals sports as a setting in which to develop character. There just isn't," said the late John Gardner, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

"Sports are the perfect setting because character is tested all the time."

Every stumble in sports can become a practice round in handling loss, criticism, and even unfairness.

Leadership in All Types of Kids: Not every child dreams of being a team captain—and that’s more than okay.

Because leadership isn’t always about calling the plays or commanding attention. Sometimes, it’s quieter. It’s seen in the kid who checks in on a discouraged teammate, the one who stays steady when the pressure’s high, or the one who helps clean up afterward without being asked.

Real leadership often flies under the radar because it’s not about volume. It’s about consistency, empathy, and showing up when it matters. In fact, a study published in The Leadership Quarterly indicates that early involvement in team sports is a stronger predictor of leadership in adulthood than academic performance or popularity in school.

Brain Benefits That Go Way Beyond The Classroom: We already know exercise boosts mood and improves focus. But current research shows that sports also sharpens the brain’s executive functioning—those behind-thescenes skills that help kids plan, organize, self-monitor, and stay emotionally-steady.

And these aren’t just school or sports skills.

They’re life skills, and they're essential for managing relationships, solving problems, and handling stress.

Dr. John Ratey, author of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, explains that regular physical activity and sports can significantly improve classroom performance by reducing behavior issues, boosting grades, improving test scores, and helping kids to regulate their emotions.

Translation: while your child is running drills or chasing a ball, their brain is leveling up in ways that pay off far beyond the field.

Kids Learn to Be Good Winners, Not Just Good Losers: We all want our kids to lose with grace, but winning well is just as important, and often overlooked. Dr. Michael Austin, co-author of Fatherhood: Philosophy for Everyone, says that sports encourage the qualities that define true humility, explaining, “Sportsmanship gives us chances to praise and encourage others, rather than seek glory for ourselves."

Emotional maturity in the face of victory builds a steadier kind of confidence, one that lasts long after the season ends.

The Body Confidence You Can’t Buy: In a world obsessed with filtered images and unrealistic ideals, sports offer something radically different, especially for girls. Instead of valuing how their bodies look, young athletes begin to appreciate what their bodies do.
