Dear Reader, This issue is packed with ideas for making the most of the season, starting with our Halloween & Fall Happenings guide. We’ve gathered pumpkin patches, fall festivals, trunk-or-treats, and other family-friendly events happening throughout the Valley, making it easy to find a festive outing for your family. Whether your kids love dressing up, picking pumpkins, or simply enjoying all the fun that comes with fall, you’ll find plenty of options to add to your calendar. We’re also taking a look at something that comes naturally to children, but can sometimes leave parents searching for answers: curiosity. Those endless “why?” questions and constant investigations are actually important building blocks for learning. Our feature offers simple ways to encourage your child to ask questions, explore their interests, and become a more confident and engaged learner—even when you don’t know all the answers yourself. You’ll also find our Enrichment Directory featuring local after-school programs, along with our calendar of family-friendly events, a graceful giveaway, and more. We hope this issue helps you embrace all the fun that October has in store for the Valley this year!

October is Window Covering Safety Month

Halloween Candy Buy-Back

The Window Covering Safety Council urges parents and caregivers to only use cordless window coverings or window coverings with inaccessible cords. Keeping kids safe can be a challenge when danger may not be obvious. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission calls corded window coverings one of the top hidden hazards in American homes, with infants and children accidentally becoming entangled in window blind cords. Take time to childproof your windows or replace them with updated products to make your home safer. Visit windowcoverings.org for more information.

Halloween is fun, but too much candy can be a bit too sweet! That's why Willow Dental Group offers their Halloween Candy BuyBack! Kids receive $2 for every pound of unopened, non-powdered candy—maximum of 5 pounds. Candy is then sent to service members and first responders. Kids can visit the coloring station to write a note or color a picture to be sent with the candy. Head to Willow Dental Group (6753 N. Willow Avenue, Fresno) on November 2nd from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Call (559) 434-1088 for more information.

Some Shorter Stuff "Make A Difference. Be A Hero. Stay Drug Free." Red Ribbon Week is October 23rd– 31st. Decorate your school or home front door, mailbox, or fence with a double-looped Red Ribbon, snap and upload your photo, then watch the votes roll in for a chance to win an iPad and $1,000 for your school! Deadline is November 1st. Visit redribbon.org to learn more. Safe to Sleep. Help prevent sleep-related deaths by placing babies on their backs to sleep, creating a safe sleep environment, and following other evidencebased recommendations. It’s important for all caregivers— parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, babysitters, child care providers, and anyone who might care for baby—to learn about safe infant sleep to help reduce baby’s risk. Visit safetosleep.nichd.nih.gov to learn more.

October is American Humane’s Adopt-A-Dog Month. Millions of dogs are euthanized every year in the U.S. because not enough people are opening their arms to offer them loving homes. Visit americanhumane.org for information on improving your life through this special companionship. Kids and Matches: A Flammable Combination! If you haven’t talked to your kids about fire safety lately, National Fire Prevention Week is October 4th–10th. Develop a home fire escape plan if you haven’t already and practice, practice, practice! While fires can start in many different ways, children playing with fire causes hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries each year. In fact, preschool-aged children are most likely to start these fires. Visit fpw.org for more information.

On the Cover: Luna Meet our Cover Kid, Luna! Luna is energetic, adventurous, and full of life. She is an avid swimmer, participates in cheer and gymnastics, and especially enjoys music, often singing her favorite songs in both English and Spanish. Watching Luna swim, tumble, cheer, sing, and laugh today is especially remarkable knowing what she has overcome. At just 16 months old, Luna accidentally ingested a button battery and suffered a devastating injury that led to an emergency airlift to Stanford, numerous surgeries, and months of hospitalization. Today, Luna is thriving—and simply enjoying being a kid.

An Update on your Family’s Health & Welfare Marina Alper, MD

Emergency Physicians Share Tips for a Safe Halloween With Halloween this month, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) reminds everyone to prioritize safety so that a fun night of celebration does not include a trip to the emergency department. “Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year for many emergency physicians,” said L. Anthony Cirillo, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP. “A few precautions can help make sure your fright night celebration does not include an unplanned medical scare.” Celebrate Halloween safely with these tips from the nation’s emergency physicians: Carve carefully. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that each year, emergency departments treat more than 3,000 Halloween-related injuries, more than half of which involve carving pumpkins. To avoid injury, use tools specifically designed for pumpkin carving, or exercise extra caution if you must use kitchen knives. Young children should not carve pumpkins, and all children should be closely supervised by adults when carving. Be safe trick-or-treating. Pedestrian fatality rates spike on Halloween, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. When trick-or-treating, stick to sidewalks and crosswalks, use flashlights and reflective gear, and walk in groups. Stay in familiar neighborhoods and only visit homes with lights on. Prevent costume and decor hazards. Slips, trips, and falls are also common on Halloween according to the CPSC. Choose costumes that fit properly, opt for soft costume accessories rather than sharp props, and only wear masks that do not obscure vision or breathing. Secure decorations, especially wires and lights, so they do not become a tripping hazard, and take extra care when setting up or taking down decorations. Enjoy candy safely. Halloween candy can pose choking hazards and allergy risks. For young children, avoid hard or small solid candies to reduce choking risk. Parents and caregivers of children with allergies should review ingredients carefully to prevent exposure to peanut, tree-nut, and other allergens, and be aware of signs of anaphylaxis. “Halloween should be a fun celebration with family, friends, and community. But if an emergency occurs, an emergency physician will be ready to care for anyone who needs them,” said Dr. Cirillo. –American College of Emergency Physicians

oung children are naturally curious. They ask endless questions, investigate their surroundings, and constantly test how the world works. While that curiosity can leave parents feeling exhausted or overwhelmed, it’s one of the most important drivers of early learning and development. Curiosity helps children build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and become more engaged learners. Dr. Lauren Loquasto, senior VP and CAO at The Goddard School, and Mary-Alice Moore, president of Highlights for Children, share why curiosity matters and how parents can nurture it. Why Curiosity Matters: Curiosity is the engine that drives learning for young children. When they are interested in a topic, they become more motivated to explore, ask questions, and seek solutions. That process strengthens important skills such as attention, working memory, flexible thinking, and problem-solving. It also helps develop confidence. For young learners, confidence does not come from always knowing the answer; it comes from believing they can find it. Children who are encouraged to explore their interests and investigate new ideas learn that questions are valuable and discovery is rewarding. Curiosity Evolves as Children Grow: Curiosity looks different at each stage of development. For infants, it’s largely sensory. They learn by touching, tasting, listening, and observing people and objects around them. Toddlers often express curiosity through movement and repetition. Climbing, stacking, dumping, filling, and repeating the same activity helps them understand how things work and builds their sense of control. Preschoolers and kindergarteners become natural investigators. Their frequent “why” and “how” questions reflect a growing desire to understand relationships, solve problems, and make sense of new experiences and the world around them. As children grow, the role of adults evolves as well. Parents move from primarily protecting and guiding children to fostering environments that encourage exploration and independent thinking. Follow Your Child’s Interests: One of the most effective ways to nurture curiosity is to pay attention to what naturally captures your child’s attention. When children are engaged in topics they enjoy, attention and persistence often develop organically. Consider what causes your child to lose track of time. Those interests provide important clues about what motivates and excites them. Rather than rushing to provide answers, encourage deeper thinking by asking open-ended questions that invite them to explore their own ideas and observations. Parents Don’t Need All the Answers: Many parents feel pressure to have answers for every question their child asks. In reality, one of the best responses is often “I don’t know. Let’s find out together.” This models curiosity and shows your child that learning continues throughout life. It also transforms questions into shared experiences and opportunities for discovery. Encourage your child to remain engaged and curious using simple phrases such as: • “That’s an interesting question.” • “What do you think?” • “Let’s investigate.” If you’re unable to respond immediately, it’s important to acknowledge Continued on page 12

Continued from page 10 the question and return to it later. Following up communicates your child’s ideas and questions are valuable. Setting Boundaries: Curiosity should be encouraged, but safe boundaries remain essential. When children become interested in something unsafe, simply saying “no” may stop the behavior, but it does little to support learning. Instead, explain why something is unsafe and redirect curiosity toward an appropriate alternative. For example, if your child wants to explore knives, explain knives can hurt people then offer safe cooking tools or supervised kitchen activities to investigate instead. Using Technology: Technology can play a positive role in nurturing curiosity when it’s used to extend real-world experiences rather than replace them. After spotting a ladybug at the park, for example, a child might use videos or age-appropriate digital resources to learn more about insects. The real-world encounter sparks curiosity and technology helps deepen learning. By listening, encouraging exploration, and demonstrating curiosity yourself, you can help your child develop skills that extend far beyond the early years.

Need Help Paying for Childcare? Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibility”

To be “eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients) Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements. How May I See if I Qualify?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230-2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.
