Slipping in the Bath is a common risk for kids under four years old. According to a study in Pediatrics, 80% of bathtub injuries are caused by falls, most often injuring a child’s head, face, and neck. It is important for parents to supervise young children during bath time. Check for sharp edges around the tub and use slip-resistant mats on the tub’s surface.

Meet our Cover Kid, Aaryan! Aaryan is a 7-year-old boy who loves playing and watching sports. He loves soccer and triathlon, and his favorite soccer team is Liverpool F.C. Last summer, he trained for triathlon and achieved first position in his age group! Aaryan is an intelligent and smart child. HealthWatch An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare

January Is National Bath Safety Month An estimated 87 children die each year from drownings at home. Two-thirds of these incidents took place in the bath. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers the following tips to help parents keep the bathroom safe: Supervision: It doesn’t take much water for a child to drown, so it’s essential to never leave your little one alone in the bath. Just two or three inches of water can be enough for them to slip below the surface and become submerged. This can happen quickly and silently, leaving little time for adults to respond. Have everything you will need during bath time on hand before you begin, and keep it at arm’s length. Once bath time is over, drain the bathtub immediately. Never leave water in the bathtub when not in use.

Slips and falls: Begin by installing non-slip mats or non-slip stickers on the floor of your bathtub or shower. Covering water faucets with cushioned covers will help prevent your child from getting hurt should they slip and bump their head. Ensure the bathroom floor has anti-slip rugs and that toilet lids are permanently shut and locked.

Water temperature: Water that is too hot can scald a child’s skin, causing severe injury. It is crucial to test the temperature of

the water before letting your child enter the tub to ensure it is not too hot. It is generally recommended to keep the temperature for a child’s bath water at around 100°F. To ensure the water is at a safe temperature, you can use a thermometer or test the water with your elbow or wrist.

Medicine and toiletry storage: Keeping medicine and toiletries out of reach will help keep your kids safe and prevent accidental poisonings or injuries. Use child-resistant caps on all medications to make it more difficult for children to access them. Keep a close eye on your little ones in the bathroom, and ensure they do not have access to any potentially dangerous items.

Electric appliances: First of all, do not use any electrical appliances near the water. If you keep any electrical appliances in the bathroom, such as hairdryers and electric razors, keep them securely stored far away from the sink, tub, or shower. Do not use any appliances while in the tub or shower. Water and electricity do not mix, and using any devices while standing in water can be dangerous.

Lead Exposure: What Parents Need to Know to Keep Kids Safe Children are particularly susceptible to harm from lead because their bodies absorb lead more efficiently than adults. Lead exposure can damage developing brains and nervous systems, slow growth, and cause learning and behavioral problems. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that approximately 500,000 children in the United States have unsafe blood levels of lead, making prevention especially important for families.

According to the California Poison Control System (CPCS), lead exposure occurs when children breathe in lead dust or ingest contaminated food or water. Because there are no known safe levels of lead, even small amounts can be harmful. Efforts to reduce exposure are ongoing, including a federal mandate to remove lead pipes within the next decade and California regulations requiring lead abatement in certain properties.

The CDC reports that common sources of lead exposure include deteriorating paint in homes built before 1978; soil near older buildings, airports, or busy roads; drinking water from lead pipes, faucets, or fixtures; and consumer products such as toys, jewelry, antiques, and imported items. Some foods, cosmetics, and traditional medicines from other countries may also contain lead.

Additionally, jobs or hobbies involving lead-based products can allow adults to bring lead dust into the home.

“Some of the health problems caused by lead poisoning can cause long-term or permanent complications in children,” says Dr. Rais Vohra, Medical Director for the Fresno/Madera Division of CPCS. “Although prevention is best, early detection and intervention can lead to good outcomes.”

Tips to Help Prevent Lead Poisoning • Supervise children closely during play, especially around dirt and older surfaces.

• Practice frequent handwashing, particularly before eating.

• Wash toys regularly with soap and water.

• Remove recalled toys and stay informed through the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

• Offer a healthy diet rich in iron, calcium, and vitamin C, which can help reduce lead absorption.

• Leave shoes at the door to avoid tracking lead dust inside.

• Avoid using antique or imported ceramics for food unless they are known to be lead-free.

nowy mountains mean one thing for kids: FUN! Local snow parks offer many options for fun in the snow, including sledding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and more.

These snow-cleared areas provide direct access to cross-country ski trails, snow play areas, and snowmobile routes for a $15 a day vehicle fee ($40 for the season). Winter Glow Up 18 Ways to Brighten your Spirits this Winter

By Pam Molnar es, the holidays are over, but that doesn’t mean that the joy has to go too. You can still display seasonal decorations, enjoy delicious food, and create memories with family and friends. Old Man Winter may have settled in, but he is not the party pooper you think he is.

Instead of dreading this time of year, try embracing it. Winter is unique, letting us slow down, but not requiring us to hibernate. We can experience the cold weather or bask in the warmth of a roaring fireplace. We are given the best of both worlds, if only for a short time. Why not make the most of it?

Eat summer food picnic style—inside.

Make burgers and potato salad. Finish up with ice cream sundaes!

Visit a local winter market or festival.

It’s a great way to support local businesses while spending time with others in your community.

Host a Souper Night In. Invite friends to bring their favorite soup or other comfort foods like casseroles or chilis. Make it a simple potluck night or add a competitive spin to the night by voting on the best.

Try a winter craft. Holidays aren’t the only time to use your creativity. Have the kids look up indoor crafts they'd like to do this month.

Go on a cold weather vacation. Instead of getting away from winter, try enjoying it by going sledding. Flip to page 7 for a list of snow parks in the Valley.

Stay warm by learning a new dance.

There are dozens of challenge and dance routine how-tos online. Which one will you master?

Use an indoor pool or outdoor hot tub.

Wearing a bathing suit in the winter makes us remember the warmth and sunshine of the summer months.

Go on a winter hike. Bundle up and explore your local trails. Capture the beauty of winter around you with some nature photography.

Create a winter scrapbook or photo collage. As you start the new year, it’s a great time to sort through all the photos on your phone and save them for the family to enjoy.

Roast hot dogs and s’mores over the fire pit. Call friends to pull up a chair and get warm. It’s a great way to get out with the neighbors after being cooped up on winter days.

Glamp in the living room. Move the couch to the side and set up a tent in the middle of the room. Fill the tent with cozy blankets, fluffy pillows, and twinkle lights.

Redecorate for winter. It’s such a letdown when the holiday decorations come down. Why not decorate the house with snowmen, snowflakes, and winter scenes until the hearts come out in February?

Bake your heart out. Nothing makes a house smell better than something baking in the oven. Just because the holidays are over doesn’t mean you have to stop.

Plan your summer vacation. When winter gets you down, make plans for your summer vacation. Search online together for fun places to visit and start a vacation countdown on your calendar.

Start an indoor garden. Teach your children about the growing cycle of plants.

Buy packages of seeds and watch them grow into seedlings. Move them outside in the spring and enjoy them all summer long.

Make homemade hot cocoa. Mix 1 cup of milk, 1 tbsp. sugar, 2 tbsp. cocoa, and ¼ tsp. vanilla. Heat on the stovetop and serve with options like marshmallows, sprinkles, or whipped cream.

Play outdoor flashlight tag. Take advantage of the shorter daylight hours.

Bring flashlights outside after the sun goes down. Try to tag others with the light from your flashlight.

Join a winter reading challenge. Check out programs at your library or online.

When the winds are howling and the temperature drops, sometimes it is better to appreciate winter from the inside.

How to Find a Safe, Quality Daycare

F

inding safe, suitable daycare is one of the more stressful undertakings parents of young children face.

Not only do you have to contend with the logistics, such as the convenience of location and hours of operation. Of utmost concern is the safety and development of your child.

The following will help you ensure your child's safety and give you peace of mind knowing you've taken the necessary precautions.

There are several things you should do and ask before sending your child to a new daycare.

Licensing & Compliance

Licensing is required in most states when a caregiver isn't a relative, and the care isn't provided in your home. Check the website of your state licensing and regulatory affairs department to look up daycare homes and facilities to ensure their license is current.

On your state's website, also look up the requirements for daycare homes and centers. Then keep this information handy when you tour a home or facility, so you know whether the daycare complies.

The Tour

A tour of the daycare home or facility is vital to ensuring your child's safety. So don't be shy, and ask for a full tour. Think of it as an inspection, and pay attention to the following: • Are all areas used by or accessible to children thoroughly childproofed?

• Are there safety plugs in all the outlets?

• Are stairways securely blocked off?

• Do kitchen and bathroom cabinets have child locks?

• Do exterior doors have safety locks up high?

• Is there a pool or hot tub in the area?

If so, is it entirely fenced off with a childproof gate?

• Is there a fenced outdoor play area?

• Is the home or facility tidy aside from a reasonable amount of toys?

• Are the bathroom and kitchen sanitary?

• Is the heating or cooling set at a comfortable temperature?

• Are there adequate toys and equipment for the number and ages of children?

• Do cribs, playpens, and other baby equipment meet safety standards?

• Is the number of children present within the daycare's license capacity? Does the daycare also meet the appropriate ratio of caregivers to children?

• Does it smell clean? Or do you smell neglected diapers or cigarette smoke?

• Are the children happy and content?

• Is there ample play space?

• How does the staff interact with the children?

Need Help Paying for Childcare?

Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibility”

To be “eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients) Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits.

For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

How May I See if I Qualify?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230-2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.
