Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibilit y”

To be “ eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients)

Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

How May I See if I Qualif y?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230 -2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.

Summer At Your Library

Summer is a time when children get a break from the rigorous studying and learning they do from late August to early June. Sadly, summer break also means that many children fall victim to the dreaded “summer slide.” Summer slide, or summer learning loss, occurs during these summer months when children simply stop learning. During the summer months, summer slide can cause a child to lose as much as 2/3 of what they have learned during the previous school year. This simply means that they return to school not as on grade level as their peers who are engaged in some kind of activities which stimulate the mind to continuously learn during the summer months.

Libraries across the country have been fighting summer slide for over a hundred years now. This year the fight continues on with Summer at Your Library. What started out as a reading program at the library during the summer months has evolved into a summer full of fun, educational, and free programs for the entire family. Reading is still a very big component of the program, but there are also many performers providing entertainment to kids. Learn more about programs near you below!

Whether your kids enjoy reptiles, reading, crafts, magic, or music—there’s something for everyone! Head to ccparent. com/ summerreading to find free and fun programs near you!

Dealing With Earwax

Why Do Ears Make Wax?

Earwax is made in the outer ear canal, the area between the fleshy part of the ear on the outside of the head and the middle ear. The medical term for earwax is cerumen.

Earwax has some important jobs. It:

• acts as a waterproof lining of the ear canal, protecting it and the eardrum from germs that can cause infection

• traps dirt, dust, and other particles, keeping them from injuring or irritating the eardrum

The wax makes its way through the outer ear canal to the opening of the ear. Then it either falls out or comes out during bathing. In most people, the outer ear canal makes earwax all the time, so the canal always has enough wax in it.

Does Earwax Need to Be Removed?

Usually, there's no need to remove earwax because it comes out by itself. Sticking anything into a child's ears raises the risk of infection or damage to the ear canal or eardrum. Cotton swabs are handy for a variety of grooming needs, but should not be used to remove earwax. In most cases, regular bathing is enough to keep it at healthy levels.

While some people have more earwax than others, in general the ear makes as much wax as it needs. Rarely, kids' ears do make too much earwax. And sometimes earwax can build up and block the ear canal, especially when pushed in by a finger, cotton swab, or other object. This is called "impaction." If it affects hearing or causes pain or discomfort, a

5 Steps to Babyproof Your Home

Your little one’s on-the-go adventures mark a huge milestone for their development and your family. Before you allow your baby to trek freely from room to room, get your home ready for a child on the move with these safety steps and precautions:

Prepare Before the Birth

First-time parents are likely to embark upon a new life filled with late nights, sleep deprivation, and a world of stresses they’ve never experienced or considered. Prepare your home before the baby is born to avoid the panic of waiting until the last minute.

Tour like a Tot

The first step toward ensuring your home is ready for a mobile child is to see the world from the same level. Take a crawling tour around your home to see things that may be in the way or discover hazardous items that are within easy reach. Use all of your senses to assess any potential dangers.

Latch it Up

Protect your little one from sharp objects and heavy items by installing child protection latches on all cabinets and drawers. For an added layer of protection, keep any sharp objects and harmful chemicals in high places only adults can reach.

Evaluate Leaning Objects

Bookshelves, bedside tables, and the items placed on them, such as television sets and other large appliances, can be a threat to the safety of a small child trying to pull themselves up and balance on two feet. Ensure these items are properly secured or keep them put away unless in use to avoid them being pulled on top of your child.

Other Safety Measures

To properly prepare your home for a mobile child, don’t forget to take steps such as:

• Covering electrical outlets with safety plugs

• Placing safety gates at the top and bottom of staircases

• Installing fireplace screens

• Adding foam padding to sharp furniture corners and edges

• Placing a soft cover over the bathtub waterspout

• Removing blinds with looped cords or installing safety tassels and cord stops

• Stocking your first aid kit

• Putting non-slip pads under rugs

5 Reasons to Get Your Kids Outside to Play

Today’s kids typically spend several hours a day immersed in low-sensory, pixelated landscapes rather than outdoors playing in the mud, climbing trees, examining bugs, rolling down hills, or making up games.

As a consequence, kids are less focused, get frustrated more easily, and struggle with more advanced social skills like negotiation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.

“Technology is addicting and it’s keeping kids from engaging the senses, developing the muscles, and all of the fundamental things that help children develop properly,” says pediatric occupational therapist Angela Hanscom, author of Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident and Capable Children.“ We’re at the point where

we are seeing kids have pretty significant sensory issues because it’s almost like a sensory deprivation of our environment.”

Research finds that time outdoors improves our overall fitness, helps us sleep better, enhances creativity and cognitive skills, boosts our ability to fight disease, and even helps children with ADHD and anxiety better regulate their moods.

Following are five reasons why getting your kids outside into nature is something worth prioritizing.

Regulates Emotions

“Exercise and nature are the prescriptions that have helped my kid,” says Tammy Muzrall, whose son, Nathan, struggles with anxiety and social issues. “Nature is calming. It’s healing. It naturally rebalances you. All you have to do is walk in it.”

About four years ago, she began taking Nathan to a forest school near her home. Facilitated by Kelly Daniels, a Shinrin-Yoku Forest Therapy Guide trained through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy. Our bodies are inherently designed to interact with our natural environment. Movement and outdoor play helps us regulate our emotions. Physical activity strengthens the vestibular system, which is where the body manages balance and spatial orientation. The vestibular system feeds into the limbic system, which is the body’s center for emotions.

“If a child tends to be hyperactive, or if they are moving a lot or really fidgety, that means they need to move more. That movement will help their body to naturally regulate their emotions,” Hanscom explains.

Fosters Social Skills

Nathan enjoys both the social and playful aspects of the forest school.

“To find other like-minded kids who are wired like us was a breath of fresh air,” Muzrall says. “He loves jumping in the pond and climbing the trees. And, sit spots are his favorite.”

During “sit spots,” each child finds a patch of grass, a tree, or any spot that appeals to them where they can sit alone and notice their surroundings. They don’t have to sit perfectly still. They can dig around in the dirt, watch for wild animals, or listen to the birds.

Daniels says children often arrive at her forest school hyper, fidgety, nervous, and sometimes cantankerous. After circling up, talking, and playing a game, the kids do the sit spot exercise.

“They are experiencing nature in a slow enough way where they go: ‘Oh. I remember. This is what it feels like to be peaceful.’ They almost don’t even know what that feels like anymore,” Daniels says.

After 15–20 minutes, the kids circle up again and share their experience if they’d like. One child might report seeing a wild turkey with its babies while another might talk about a snail crawling up their arm.

Daniels says the children return to the circle, “almost reverent. They become respectful of other kids’ speaking. They start to listen. By the end of the camp, they’re mellow, hanging out, respectful, and kind.”

Even 30 minutes a day spent sitting in your yard, witnessing nature in action is therapeutic for adults and kids alike.

Promotes Creativity

Kids often complain that spending time outside is boring or uncomfortable.

Hanscom suggests encouraging your kids to get inspired by your environment. Try throwing in a few age-appropriate supplies and tools to rev up their imaginations.

“Place out different adult items like trays or kitchenware by mud puddles,” she says. “Bring out baskets with pulleys, string, and scissors, or planks and trucks by a slow moving stream. Giving them materials quickens the process of being creative and having ideas of what to do outside.”

Invite friends for a day of outdoor play rather than just for a few hours, which will give kids time to inspire each other and come up with ideas for their discoveries. For example, how many ways can they use a stick? One child might use it to scratch letters in the dirt while another begins building a fort.

Cultivates Environmental Stewards

Conservationists worry that disengaged kids also become less interested in caring for the environment.

Jodi Crutchfield, mom of two, believes in fostering an appreciation and empathy for the world outside with her kids. “They have learned how cool animals, bugs, and spiders are. We can play with them a little bit, but we don’t hurt them and we put them back where we found them,” Crutchfield says. “They understand the idea of leave no trace. They pick up garbage when we are on hikes and can spot a piece of trash 100 yards away. I was so proud last summer when they finished a week-long camp and both earned ‘Most Connected to the Environment’ award within their troops.”

Find your local preschool center

We know parents are busy. That’s why we have 8 locations all over Fresno and Kings County to make your life easier. Now enrolling children in part-time and full-time programs.

Enhances Mindfulness

Time spent in nature grounds us in the present moment giving us space free of distractions where we can focus on the sights, sounds, and smells surrounding us. Even if your child is reluctant, gently coax them out the door to explore a nearby trail or simply relax in the sunshine with you.

“They don’t know that it’s going to be good for them,” Daniels says. “They go around with technology bombarding them all of the time, and they forget who they are. They forget that they came from the earth, and they’re going back to the earth. You are part of everything. You’re part of the forest. You’re part of nature. It’s part of you.”

Accepting New Patients

doctor can remove it.

Parents—and kids—shouldn't attempt to remove earwax at home, even with remedies that promise to be safe and effective. Doing so risks damage to the ear canal and, possibly, a child's hearing.

What Can Parents Do?

If your child complains of ear discomfort and you see earwax in the ear, it's okay to wipe the outside of the ear with a washcloth— but don't use a cotton swab, a finger, or anything else to poke inside the ear. It could damage the delicate ear canal and eardrum, or pack the wax in even further.

Check with your doctor before using an over-the-counter earwax removal treatment.

When Should I Call the Doctor?

Call the doctor if your child has:

• ear pain, itchiness, or discomfort (like a blocked feeling in the ears)

• hearing problems

In infants and toddlers, tugging at the ears can be sign of an ear problem.

Sometimes doctors will remove earwax:

• if it's painful, itchy, or uncomfortable

• if it affects hearing

• to get a better view of the eardrum to check for problems

Earwax removal usually is done in the doctor's office. There might be a little discomfort, but it isn't painful. If a child can't sit still or cooperate, the doctor can remove it in an operating room while the child is under general anesthesia.

Doctors can remove earwax in different ways, including:

• scooping it out, pulling it out, or suctioning it out with special instruments designed for this purpose

• flushing it out with warm water

Sometimes a doctor will put drops into the ear canal to soften the wax and break it down. Or they might ask you to do this at home and then return to the doctor for wax removal.

Removal takes only a few minutes. If there's a sign of infection, the doctor may prescribe antibiotic ear drops.

What Else Should I Know?

Ear candling has gained a lot of attention as a home remedy for earwax removal, but it hasn't been proved to be safe or effective— and can be dangerous.

In ear candling, one end of a cone-type device is inserted into the ear canal and the other end is set on fire. The idea is that the fire and the cone form a vacuum and extract the wax. Trying this at home carries a high risk of:

• burning the ear canal

• punching a hole in the eardrum, which can cause permanent hearing damage

Whenever you have any concerns about your child's ears or hearing, call your doctor.

10 Fun & Creative Ways to Celebrate Dad

Every dad needs reminders of how much he is loved and valued. While you don’t want to forgo the handmade cards and the offbeat kid ideas, these 10 ways to celebrate dad are sure to remind him of how much you care and give everyone some fun along the way.

1. Scavenger Hunt: This works for kids of all ages, plus it can be as involved as you want it to be. Come up with fun clues like, “As a dad I could not ask for better, your next clue is where you find a letter,” to lead dad around the house to find a Father’s Day prize. You can make up your own clues or download a set from the internet. You’re sure to get lots of giggles from kids every step of the way.

To make this work with older kids, you can even take the hunt beyond the house to go to places around town. Give him a clue when he arrives at each location, eventually ending up at a favorite restaurant or event like a baseball game or concert.

2. Memory Lane: Even the most macho dads can appreciate a little trip down memory lane. Scroll through your phones for some old photos and create a short movie full of memories for him. This is the perfect project for tweens and teens to take charge of. For younger helpers, get photos printed and have them create a poster of memories.

It’s even great to get photos from before dad was, well, a dad. Give him the chance to tell stories about who he was as a kid and before he embraced dad life.

3. Finish a Project: Every dad we know has some project they started that they never got around to finishing because dad life is busy. Work together to help him finish a project. Whether it’s finally building the shelves he needs or planting the garden he dreams of, working together will make the project even sweeter.

4. Challenge: This can be as crazy as you want it to be. Think outdoor races, a bake-off, a game of basketball, or chess. Discover a fun challenge you can do for some friendly competition and time together.

5. Serve Him: This is not giving him a coupon for help in the yard or washing his car. This is about actually doing it. Surprise dad and wash the car inside and out. Pack his lunch for the next day. Take care of a job he always does so he can put his feet up and relax. Bonus points if you bring him some lemonade and cookies!

6. Explore a Favorite Spot: Does he love a certain hiking trail? Maybe there’s a bookstore that he never has time to meander through or that hardware store that he loves. Even a coffee shop that makes his favorite latte. Find a place you know he enjoys and get him there. You can have him go on his own if he likes some quiet time to himself or make it a family affair if that’s more his speed. No matter how you do it, just make sure it’s one of his favorite places.

7. Discover a New Place: It’s easy for parents to get caught up in the day-to-day that they run out of time for exploring new places. Give dad the gift of exploration.

You can go old school and road trip with no plan in mind, but it’s usually better to have a few ideas up your sleeve. Search online for wacky restaurants, hikes you never knew about, abandoned places, and more.

8. Make a Summer Bucket List—Dad Edition: Even dad has a list of things he’d love to do. Sometimes it gets buried under work, baseball practice, and goodnight stories. Father’s Day is the perfect time to dust it off!

Get a poster and some markers or create a shared family list on your phone for Dad’s Summer Bucket List. Ask him what he wants to do before summer is over—and it can’t be all work and house things! Make sure he has simple ideas like watching his favorite movie and some bigger ideas like boogie boarding at the beach.

The only requirement: make time for the things on the list. Putting them on the calendar is the key to making them happen.

9. Favorite Foods: From sunup to sundown, fill the day with dad’s favorite foods. Does he love a Caffè Americano and donuts? Maybe a protein shake from that place across town? How about burgers and fries? Add a milkshake? You got it!

Whatever it is, the day isn’t about what the kids like—sorry kids! It’s a chance for dad to eat the things he loves and enjoy every bite. He doesn’t even have to share!

10. More Than a Day: The fun doesn’t have to last for just one day. Make it an overnight or a weekend. Plan a family vacation that you know he’d love. It doesn’t need to be far or expensive—although that resort he’s dreamed about isn’t a terrible idea! Think about things he loves and start there.

Does he love the outdoors? Maybe a campout is a perfect idea—even in the backyard! Is he a museum guy? Plan an overnight trip to go to an art installation or even a fun place like the Spy Museum. Whatever dad likes, you can find a place he will enjoy. And the best part? The time you’ll have together!

5 Tips to Keep Kids Reading This Summer

School is out for the summer and the kids are finally able to sleep in, play outdoors more, and take a break from homework. While the free time is enjoyable, kids often turn to screens or other activities and let their reading skills slide while on summer break. How can you stop the “summer slide” from happening?

Create a Book Club

Two people reading a book at the same time can be considered a book club. Pick a book your child would like to read or an old favorite from your own childhood and read it together. If you have multiple children that are about the same reading level, this can be a great way to get everyone involved. You can also consider looping in cousins and neighbors!

See the Movie

Check out what books are becoming movies this summer or those that are already available on DVD and choose those books to read with your child. A reward for finishing the book will be watching the movie together.

Be a Role Model

Parents who enjoy reading often have children who enjoy reading. I notice if I sit down in the living room with a book instead of turning on the TV, my tweens will often find their own spot to relax and read near me. If I turn on the television, we all end up watching it together. Set a good example for your kids when it comes to reading. It isn’t just for schoolwork, it is a fun hobby as well.

Expand your Reading

Not all kids will find a book they love easily. The goal is to practice reading, it doesn’t matter if it is a book or something more creative. Find other things besides books to read such as graphic novels or magazines. You can even get kids into the kitchen and have them read recipes from a cookbook. They will enjoy helping prepare meals and not even notice they are practicing their reading skills at the same time.

Pick Interesting Topics

Find out what your child is interested in and check out books on that topic. My son became curious about volcanoes so we headed to the library and checked out multiple books on volcanoes. When we returned home he promptly started reading about them and writing down interesting facts in his journal. You can also encourage your child to try different genres to see what they prefer. Nonfiction, historical fiction, mysteries, graphic novels, or classic literature—once kids find their niche, they will most likely be more excited about reading.

Kids who make reading a part of their daily routine are more likely to become lifetime lovers of reading. Set aside part of the day when your child can read for 30 minutes or set this as a goal before they can play video games, meet up with friends, or go to the pool.

Try to make it fun and come up with creative ways to incorporate reading into your daily schedule. Just a bit of daily reading will help them maintain their current reading level and be ready to take on new material once school begins.
