Play Safe! Be Safe! Fires started by children playing with matches and lighters lead to approximately 13,900 structure fires every year, with preschool-aged children most at risk for starting these incidents. Tragically, about 300 people lose their lives annually in these fires, resulting in around $280 million in property damage. Bedrooms are a common location for such fires, often igniting bedding materials. Children are also twice as likely as adults to die in residential fires, making early fire safety education essential. Visit usfa.fema.gov/prevention to access engaging tools for teaching fire safety to young children.

An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare

Report on Tip-Over Injuries and Deaths

The Consumer Product Safety Commission released the report, Tip-Over Injuries and Fatalities Associated with Televisions, Furniture, and Appliances. Tip-over injuries and deaths occur when children get hurt by falling furniture, usually when climbing or playing near them. This can be due to a faulty furniture design, unstable surfaces, defective tip-over restraints, heavy objects on top of furniture, or multiple open drawers. The report found that from 2020–2022 there was an average of 17,800 emergency department (ED) treated injuries, and from January 2013–July 2023 there were 217 reported fatalities associated with tipover incidents. Of these, children suffered 7,800 (44%) injuries, disproportionately higher than the general population. Of the fatalities reported 71% involved children under age 18 years. The report also found that among the estimated annual average number of ED-treated injuries involving children 38% involved

a table; 28% involved a chest, bureau, or dresser; 16% involved shelving, a shelving unit, or a bookcase; and 18% involved all other furniture, including cabinets and stands.

In a big win against these types of injures and death, Congress passed the STURDY Act (Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) in 2022, requiring all furniture to meet more stringent stability standards. This law took effect in September 2023, but any furniture bought before this date may still be a tip-over risk.

When purchasing new clothing storage furniture, ask if the product complies with the new safety requirements (ASTM F2057-23) under the STURDY Act. Anchor It! KID encourages caregivers to anchor all furniture to the wall, including furniture that is already in homes. Visit anchorit.gov for or more information about the importance of, and how to use anchoring kits. Report any furniture tip-over incidents to saferproducts.gov. – Kids In Danger, kidsindanger.org

Odorless, Colorless, Tasteless, Dangerous

California Poison Control System (CPCS) reminds California residents that there is a higher risk for this “silent killer” during the colder moths, especially when heating systems run for hours. Accidental carbon monoxide poisoning sends more than 100,000 people in the U.S. to the ER each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Natural disasters can also cause electrical power outages leading many people to use portable generators, which can increase the risk of death. USAFacts reports that the use of portable generators is associated with 40% of carbon monoxide (CO) deaths related to consumer products since 2009.

“Carbon monoxide is insidious, and people don’t realize that they are being poisoned. It’s a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas produced from burning fuel, and totally undetectable to the human senses,” says Rais Vohra, Medical Director for the Fresno/Madera Division of CPCS. “But it is completely preventable. There are steps you can take to protect yourself, family, and pets from carbon monoxide poisoning.”

Carbon monoxide is found in the fumes produced from burning fuel. Common sources include furnaces, portable generators, kerosene heaters, ovens, stoves, gas ranges, and running vehicles in enclosed spaces—such as a garage. It is also found in charcoal and wood burning equipment, such as charcoal or hibachi grills. CO from these sources, as well as malfunctioning or unvented fuelburning appliances, can build up in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces resulting in CO poisoning. Both people and animals in these spaces can be poisoned and can die from breathing CO.

What You Can Do

• Learn to recognize symptoms of CO poisoning: confusion, dizziness, weakness or fatigue, headache, loss of muscle control, loss of consciousness, nausea, vomiting, or shortness of breath.

• Install a battery-operated or battery back-up CO detector in your home near sleeping areas. Be sure to check or change the batteries in it regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.

• Have your heating system, water heater, and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances inspected by a qualified technician every year prior to turning the heat on when winter begins.

• Never try to heat your home by turning on the oven or clothes dryer and leaving the door open.

• Make sure chimneys and vents are not blocked with tarps, debris, or snowfall.

• Never leave the motor running in your vehicle when it is parked in an enclosed or partially enclosed space, such as a garage.

• Never use a charcoal grill, hibachi, or portable camping stove inside a home, tent, or camper.

• Do not cover the bottom of natural gas or propane ovens with aluminum foil.

If a detector goes off, assume that a real danger is present, and get all people and pets out of the structure immediately and into fresh air. Call 911 and seek medical help right away. Do not reenter until a professional declares it safe.

Combat the Epidemic of Loneliness by Eating Together

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, Americans face a lack of social connection that poses a significant risk to individual health and longevity. "Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk for premature death by 26% and 29%, respectively. More broadly, lacking social connection can increase the risk for premature death as much as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day," per the report.

One way to address this epidemic of loneliness is by sharing a meal with friends and family. Learn the specific advantages of family meals identified by the Family Meals Movement and take advantage of these benefits by sharing one more meal together each week.

Meals Together Foster Togetherness and Connectedness:

Studies demonstrate a positive relationship between family meal frequency and measures of family functioning, which is defined as family connectedness, communication, expressiveness, and problem-solving. The key is for family members to engage in conversation with one another during mealtimes and take advantage of the one-on-one time without distractions or interruptions from screens and devices.

Meals Together Strengthen Mental Health: An often overlooked benefit of family meals is mental health support. Multiple studies show family meals have long been associated with improving mental health, including reducing symptoms of depression, decreasing violent behavior, and lessening thoughts of suicide among youth. Among adolescents, frequent family meals can help mitigate the risks of destructive behaviors by boosting prosocial behaviors and life satisfaction. Data from the FMI Foundation's "Staying Strong with Family Meals" Barometer shows family meals also help restore a sense of peace, with one-third of survey respondents saying family meals make them feel calm.

Meals Together Improve Nutrition: There is one easy way to help ensure your family is eating fruits and vegetables: a family meal. Research shows family meals improve fruit and vegetable consumption. It also pays to start this trend early, with research finding preschool-aged children who eat frequent family meals are more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables. Overall, research indicates families who eat together frequently have a better overall healthy diet and lower body mass index.

Meals Together Improve Academic Performance: Eating more meals together as a family is associated with improved overall adolescent health, including higher grades. Multiple studies show students whose families eat together frequently, perform better academically in areas such as reading and vocabulary. Research also supports a correlation between frequent family meals lowering incidents of risky and harmful behaviors, including drug and alcohol abuse, which may also contribute to school performance.

Meals Together Teach Civility: The family dinner table is a perfect place to show younger generations how to communicate respectfully, according to the Family Meals Barometer summary. In fact, 76% of survey participants agreed family meals are a good opportunity to have and teach respectful interactions while 70% said frequent family meals create a safe environment for families to discuss thornier societal issues. Another 68% affirmed their belief that sitting at a meal together tends to keep conversations more civil.

Manage Holiday Stress

7 Practical Tips for Parents

The holiday season is magical— twinkling lights, excited kids, family traditions, and the joy of giving and receiving gifts. However, for many parents, this time of year also brings a side dish of stress. The pressure to make everything perfect, ensure everyone is happy, and handle the demands of work, family, and holiday events can overwhelm even the most organized parents.

Here’s how you can manage holiday stress and actually enjoy the magic this season brings:

1. Let Go of Perfection

With the quest for perfect decorations, the ideal family photos, and flawlessly executed meals, it’s easy to feel like you have to meet an impossible standard. The truth is, perfection isn’t what makes the holidays special. It’s the memories, the laughter, and the shared experiences that will stand out to your kids.

Tip: When things don’t go as planned, take a deep breath and laugh it off. Show your kids that it’s okay when things aren’t perfect—it’s part of what makes life fun and interesting!

2. Create Meaningful, Low-Stress Traditions

Think about the simple things your family enjoys and turn them into cherished traditions. This could be anything from decorating the tree together, making homemade ornaments, or watching a favorite holiday movie as a family.

Tip: Ask your family what their favorite holiday activities are and let them guide which traditions you keep and which ones

you might let go. You’ll be surprised how often the simplest traditions are the most treasured.

3. Set Realistic Expectations

This holiday season, give yourself the gift of setting realistic expectations. Prioritize what matters most to you and your family, and let the rest go. By setting boundaries and focusing on a few key priorities, you’ll feel more in control and less overwhelmed.

Tip: Before the holiday season kicks into full swing, sit down with your partner and discuss what’s truly important to your family. Make a list of your top priorities and set boundaries for how much time, money, and energy you’re willing to spend on different activities.

4. Delegate and Accept Help

Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to your spouse, older kids, or even other family members. Whether it’s asking your partner to handle the gift wrapping, getting your kids involved in decorating, or assigning dishes for family potlucks, sharing the workload can help reduce stress.

Tip: Create a family to-do list and assign tasks to each person. Make it fun by turning certain chores into a game or rewarding the kids with holiday-themed treats for their help.

5. Take Care of Yourself

Prioritizing your physical and mental well-being is essential to keeping holiday stress in check. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and eating well during the holiday season.

Tip: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, step outside for some fresh air. Even just a few

minutes of alone time can help you reset and approach the rest of your day with a clearer mind.

6. Remember What Matters Most

Amid all the busyness, it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters during the holidays—spending time with the people you love. The presents, parties, and decorations are all secondary to the joy of being together.

Tip: If you start to feel overwhelmed, stop and ask yourself, “Will this matter a year from now? Will my kids remember how we laughed together, even when things didn’t go as planned?” Shifting your perspective can help reduce stress and refocus on what’s truly important.

7. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful tool for reducing stress, and it’s especially meaningful during the holiday season. Take time each day to reflect on the things you’re thankful for, whether it’s a quiet moment with your kids, a warm home, or the chance to celebrate with loved ones.

Tip: At the dinner table, ask each family member to share one thing they’re thankful for that day. It’s a quick and easy way to bring gratitude into your holiday routine.

This holiday, give yourself permission to relax, savor the little moments, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Your kids won’t remember the perfectly wrapped gifts or the gourmet meals, but they will remember the love, laughter, and joy you shared as a family. That’s the real magic of the holidays.

Coffee-Toffee Chocolate Chip Cookies

Cook Time: 40 minutes • Total Time: 1 hr 15 min (plus cooling) 24 servings

Ingredients

• 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

• 3/4 teaspoon baking soda

• 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt

• 1 1/4 sticks (10 tablespoons) room temperature unsalted butter

• 1 tablespoon instant espresso powder

• 1 cup packed light brown sugar

• 1 large egg

• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

• 1 cup dark chocolate chips

• Three 1.4-ounce (about 1 cup) chocolate-toffee bars, chopped

• 1 cup white chocolate chips

• Sprinkles, for decorating

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.

2. Beat the butter, espresso powder, and brown sugar in a large bowl with a mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the egg and vanilla until smooth. Reduce the mixer speed to low, then gradually beat in the flour mixture until just combined. Stir in the dark chocolate chips and toffee bars.

3. Roll the dough into 1 1/2-inch balls and arrange 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Bake, switching the pans halfway through, until the cookies are puffed and just set around the edges, about 15 minutes. Let the cookies cool 10 minutes on the pans, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.

4. Melt the white chocolate chips in the microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring, until smooth. Drizzle over one side of each cookie and decorate with sprinkles. Refrigerate until set, about 30 minutes.

Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibilit y”

To be “ eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients)

Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

How May I See if I Qualif y?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230 -2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.
